elcome to the October issue of Gordano Living. It seems the children have only just settled back in to school and already half term is on the horizon. You should find plenty of ideas of what to do and where to go in this month’s magazine. You will see we have extended our What’s On section in this edition, not only to accommodate ideas of what to do in the school holidays, but also to detail forthcoming firework events and feature the pubs and restaurants as they unveil their Christmas party menus.

I know many of you will be horrified I have mentioned Christmas already, but planning ahead can take so much stress out of the

RNLI Boathouse

C

onstruction work at the new RNLI lifeboat station in Portishead has progressed at a pace with contractors Andrew Scott making use of the good summer weather. While support for the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat Trust fundraisers continues, their new £232,000 target is within sight.

Since our last update in the September issue of Gordano Living, all 22 column caps (large round discs) that sit on the piled columns to support the concrete launch ramp, have been craned into position (pictured), and the precast concrete beams and planks have been installed. This marks noteworthy progress towards the

completion of the slipway down which the station’s Atlantic class lifeboat will launch. A seating beam will be used to bridge the gap between the ramp and the walkway, filled with reinforced concrete to provide a solid base for the slipway.

With the foundations completed and the slab where the lifeboat launch tractor and lifeboat will be housed concreted, the steel frame which forms the main section of the boathouse was erected, allowing the shape and size of the building to come to life.

With the building work well underway, the fundraising appeal to raise £180,000 towards the cost of the building moved on quickly, with an extraordinary number of volunteer fundraisers from far and wide contributing towards busting the original target.

Lake fenced off T he lake at Portishead Lake Grounds has been fenced off to protect visitors.

The authorities were alerted after reports of dead and dying ducks at the seafront beauty spot and subsequent water tests revealed large amounts of blue-green algae present. This became apparent to passers-by as the algae built up and large blue-green blobs started to appear in the water.

In large amounts, the algae can cause two major problems. It can increase the presence of bacteria and it can block sunlight from the water, starving it of oxygen.

Signs were put up around the lake warning people to stay clear and not let pets enter the water as soon as the dying ducks were discovered, but when the blue-green algae was confirmed, orange netting was used to fence the lake off, preventing anyone

from entering it. Boating on the lake has been suspended.

To address the problem North Somerset Council organised nets of barley straw, which have been placed in the lake. A spokesman from North Somerset Council said: “The Environment Agency has confirmed that water tests have revealed the presence of blue-green algae. We have put barley straw in the water which is a tried and tested method of combating the algae. We are also installing a pump so that the water will always be aerated.

The advice remains the same that people should not enter the water and they should not let pets swim in it.”

The water will be closely monitored while nature takes its course and the signs and fencing are expected to be removed as soon as test results give it the all clear.

A

new dementia-friendly venture has now been added to the Lighthouse Café schedule. Tuesday morning sessions take place once a month serving the needs of those who care for relatives with dementia and those they care for. The dementia café is already very popular and hopes to expand to serve more needs in the community if additional volunteers can be found.

The initiative comes jointly from two groups. Portishead Dementia Alliance are organising an activities group for people with dementia to enable their carers to meet at the same time for informal support. Crossroads Care organise activities specifically for carers to have some time out. The first session in mid-August proved to be a lively occasion, manned by volunteers.

Activities provided by Portishead Dementia Alliance included board games, crafts and a game of skittles down the central aisle of the church!

The next dementia café session will take place on September 30 from 10.30am – 12.30pm.

Big Lottery fund supports Lighthouse Cafe

T

he Lighthouse Café is able to support the Portishead community thanks to an ‘Awards for All’ grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

Organisers of the Lighthouse Café are delighted to announce they have received a grant for £8,149 that will help purchase equipment for the café.

A café spokesman said: “The grant is the icing on the cake of all the fundraising that Portishead Church of England and Portishead United Reformed Church have carried out over the last two years to make repairs and renovations to the church building, which has enabled the building to be used for more community use.”

Top childminding duo retire

L

ife is going to be very different for two Portishead childminders from Portishead who retired at the end of September after 50 years childminding between them.

Jan Beaven and Margaret Maynard (pictured), both 62, have been childminding in Portishead and the surrounding area for 26 years and 24 years respectively, and between them have looked after more than 200 local children.

Jan said: “You treat the children you care for as your own and provide a lovely home environment for them. They are your family when they come through the door and that is exactly how it should be.

“The rewards are wonderful, seeing them

grow, learn and achieve new skills. As a childminder it’s about supporting the family too, it’s far more than just a job.”

Margaret said: “It’s an energetic job, we’ve done lots of activities on the beach and in the woods, and each day as a childminder is different.

We have spent a lot of time outside with the children which we feel is important.

“We have done so many exciting things with the children, we wouldn’t have done otherwise. I’m also going to miss helping the families and working together with the parents too.”

The friends, who both got awarded Outstanding on their last Ofsted inspection, will be dearly missed by both parents and children alike. Some of the children pop in to see them long after they have left their care.

With Jan and Margaret displaying such passion for the job, it begs the question why are they giving it up?

Jan said: “There’s never a good time to

finish, but we both realised it was the right time, especially as we have our own grandchildren now.”

Street lights to be replaced

ore than 220 ageing street lighting columns in Portishead will be replaced over the next few months.

The existing concrete columns will be replaced with fully recyclable aluminium units with a life expectancy of over 70 years. The new aluminium columns will have environmentally friendly and energy

efficient lanterns with LED lighting which will reduce energy consumption and lower maintenance costs.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, North Somerset Council’s executive member for highways, said: “In addition to these benefits which will save money for the council tax payers, new technology will enable the lights to be dimmed between 7pm and 6am, allowing them to remain lit all night.”

The work to replace the columns has begun and will continue until December.

The scheduled programme is: Phase one - Bruton Avenue, Denny Close, Denny View, Down Close, Downleaze, Holly Ridge, Meadows Close.

Phase two - Blackdown Road, Brendon Road, Mendip Road, Polden Road, Quantock Road.

Phase three - Dry Hill, Leeside, Newlands Hill, Queens Avenue, Rippleside, Severn Road.

Phase four - Capenor Close, Greenfield Park, Maysfield Close, Newlands Close, Spring Rise, St Peter’s Road.

Phase five - Church Road North, Combe Avenue, Combe Fields, Downside.

Phase six - Beach Road West, Eastwood Place, Nore Gardens, Orchard Close, Rodmoor Road.

The £250,000 scheme is part of North

Somerset Council’s ongoing street lighting replacement programme. The work is being carried out on behalf of the council by contractor Scottish and Southern Energy.

Access to properties will be maintained at all times. Advance signs will be put up and residents and businesses will be notified by letter when work is due to take place outside their properties.

Garden Party Raises over £600

A

garden party and family barbecue at Clarence House in Portishead High Street raised over £600 for stillbirth charities.

The event on August 31 was organised by Derrick and Tracey Fowler and their children Jagger and Skye, in memory of Sebastian Smart, Derrick and Tracey’s great nephew who was stillborn in April.

Tracey said: “We were completely overwhelmed by the support we received and can’t thank everyone enough. Our family, friends, colleagues and members of ______ ______ BED & BREAKFAST the local community, including our MP Liam Fox, all supported the event, we really are bowled over. Bird hides damaged

P

olice are appealing to the public for information after three bird hides near Portishead were damaged.

Avon Wildlife set up the hides on the nature reserve on the Ashlands between Portishead and Portbury. The charity set them up for anyone to use to see the vast array of birds and animals in the reserve.

However they have fallen victim to vandals over the past few months including an attempt to burn the seating.

Over the weekend of the 16 and 17 August, the hides were extensively damaged, with planks of wood smashed and ripped off, and local police are appealing for anyone with any information about this to get in touch.

Inspector Jarrod Bartlett from Nailsea Police Station, said: “This is just mindless vandalism. The hides have been damaged really badly and it will be quite expensive for the charity to fix them.

“Please get in touch with us if you have any information about this crime. These are facilities that have been provided for the whole community to enjoy, and they have been spoiled for no reason.”

Bernie D’Arcy, from the Avon Wildlife Trust, said: “The three bird hides on the reserve are an amazing resource for the whole community, including local wildlife enthusiasts, school and scout groups and a newly formed toddler group - Portbury Wharf Nature Bugs. It has been very disheartening to witness the ongoing vandalism, particularly over the last couple of years and it will incur labour and timber replacement costs.

“The time spent by staff and volunteers cleaning the hides and dealing with the consequences of the anti-social behaviour could be spent more productively safeguarding the wildlife and maintaining the nature reserve for the enjoyment of visitors, it’s very frustrating.”

former Portishead town councillor wants to hear from any individuals interested in standing for town council next year as an independent councillor. Former town councillor Michael Parker says he wants to see party politics taken out of the local council. He aims to set up a group to allow potential independents to meet, discuss ideas and if elected move forward projects residents

are calling for action on, without involving party politics.

Mr Parker was inspired by the group Independents for Frome (IFF), members of which managed to get elected for 10 of the 17 seats available on the council.

Volunteers helping to keep Portishead’s roads safe

P

olice have teamed up with local people to help make the roads safer in Portishead.

Seven people have now been trained to run a voluntary Community Speed Watch (CSW) scheme in the town.

PCSO Gary Lewis, the North Somerset CSW liaison officer, said: “People regularly raise speeding traffic as an issue for Portishead. Now we have a group of community-minded people who will be helping to improve road safety throughout the town.

“The volunteers don’t have any powers to issue speeding fines, as the scheme is intended to raise drivers’ awareness and encourage responsible driving.

“It will also give us the information we need to target our speed enforcement activity to the times and locations it’s most needed.”

The volunteers have all been trained to use speed monitoring equipment and will be wearing high visibility jackets when they undertake the roadside speed checks.

They will note down the details of any vehicles driven over the speed limit and pass that on to local police, who will write a warning letter to the registered keeper.

Autumn Bed Promotion Yellow duck project

M

embers of Harbourside WI in Portishead have been making little yellow ducks and despatching them around the town in a campaign aimed at promoting the donation of blood, organs and bone marrow.

A tag on the ducks directs the finder to a website which asks you to register where the duck was found. The website also provides information about the campaign and includes stories about lives that have been saved by donors. More people are wanted for the campaign to make and distribute the ducks.

Portishead mum urges people to stand up to cancer

ortishead mum Suzanne Harford, who has been treated for cancer, is appearing on a national website to launch a dynamic fundraising campaign.

Cancer Research UK and Channel 4’s exciting fundraising campaign, Stand Up To Cancer features the 41-year old mum of two along with her husband Justin.

Stand Up To Cancer is uniting scientists, celebrities and communities across the UK to generate funds, raise awareness and accelerate new cancer treatments to help patients and save more lives.

There are many ways to get involved including taking part in the new March On Cancer event in Bristol, buying stylish Stand Up To Cancer goods online and in local Cancer Research UK shops, or getting together with friends, family and colleagues to come up with a bright idea to raise money.

It will culminate in a live TV fundraiser on Friday 17 October as an army of millions tune in for a night of live TV on Channel 4 hosted by Davina McCall, Alan Carr and Dr Christian Jessen.

Men, women and children can also stand up and be part of a collective force of tens of thousands of people across the UK who will March On Cancer on Saturday, October 11. Bristol is one of 15 cities hosting a march.

Community News Viper Valets raises money for Alzheimer’s

T

he chaps at Viper Valets have completed one of the country’s toughest challenges, the Tough Mudder, raising £1,000 for Alzheimer Research.

The team ran 11.5 miles and overcame 21 obstacles including jumping through icy water, climbing 12 ft walls and running through electric shock cables.

Co-owner Dan said: “My nan struggled with dementia before she passed away and I saw the affect it had on her and the family, hence the Alzheimer’s related charities are close to my heart and we are really pleased to have done something positive. We would like to thank everyone who supported us.”

There are also vacant officer roles of chairperson, treasurer, secretary and box secretary that need to be filled, along with shore crew volunteers, whose job it is to prepare the boats for launch and drive the launching vehicles. Stagecoach pupil Chloe Butler, aged 12, sailed through the audition organised by the theatre school’s agency, to secure the part of one of the lead characters, the Young Princess Fiona.

Stagecoach Bristol South West Principal, Heidi Hollis, said: “Chloe is a fan of the film and so she was absolutely ecstatic to find out she’d landed a role in the musical. She has trained very hard over the past year and this is a great reward for her efforts.”

Chloe said: “When I found out I got the part I was really excited, I was jumping up and down in the car. I loved being in the show and being on the Hippodrome stage.

“The show has taken me one step closer to achieving my dreams. I’d love a career on the big stages in the West End, or maybe even Broadway, but I’d like to do films as well. I just want to do it all!’

Portishead students celebrate Redland High excels GCSE results

tudents at Gordano School in Portishead celebrated their GCSE results which this year included the best set of maths grades in the school’s history. In a year where results have been forecast to be more turbulent across the country, more than 77% of students achieved five or more passes at C grade or above and 67% hit the 5 A*-C including English and maths measure. For the first time maths results surpassed the 80% threshold at C grade.

More than a quarter of the year group also qualified for the English Baccalaureate, which rewards students who achieve passes at C grade and above in English, maths, sciences, modern languages and either history or geography.

Red Maids’ School celebrates A’levels

R

ed Maids’ Year 13 students once again achieved outstanding examination results and are now moving on to a range of first class higher education courses.

At International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma 22% of subjects at higher level were awarded level 7 (the highest level possible) and 80% achieved a level 6 or 7.

Five girls scored an amazing 41 points out of a possible 45.

At A2 Level, 14.5% of all entries were graded A* and 28% of students gained at least one A* grade.

More than half of all A2 entries were awarded an A* or A grade and in total, 16 girls achieved three or four A* and A grades.

Speaking of these results, headmistress Isabel Tobias said: “Our students are academically able and motivated and with the support of outstanding teachers they have achieved the best possible outcomes.”

There was 100% success at A* or A in economics, German, Latin and philosophy and ethics.

In art, business studies, further maths, music, physical education, Russian and Spanish all students received A*, A or B grades.

GCSEs

Red Maids’ GCSE results revealed very high proportions of top A* and A grades.

Across all entries, 42% were straight A*s and more than two thirds A* or A grade.

Furthermore, The hard work was all 89% of all worth it! entries were awarded A*, A or B grades.

In further mathematics all 12 students gained an A* grade. In drama, each girl achieved the top A* grade and in music all girls received straight A* or A grades Other straight A highlights include: 83% of all entries in IGCSE triple science were graded A* or A. In English language IGCSE 72% of results were graded A* or A, 80% achieved A* or A in English literature and in mathematics IGCSE 69% of results were graded A* or A. Across all subjects, 100% of students scored five or more A* to C grades.

Outstanding results at Clifton High School

C

lifton High School GCSE results have mirrored the outstanding performance they saw from their A’level students earlier this summer. A significant time for Clifton High, the students collecting their results this year were the first to join the school as it became fully co-educational and adopted the pioneering Diamond Model in 2009. As with the A’levels, the GCSE results have been worth the wait.

Dr Alison Neill, head of the school said: “As with our A’levels, our GCSE students have achieved an outstanding set of results which reflect the brilliance of our school, our ethos and our students. I am delighted that CHS students have achieved more A* and A grades than ever.”

Almost 30% of students achieved all A* or A grades, almost 60% of grades achieved were A* or A and almost 10% of candidates achieved all A* grades.

65% of grades achieved in modern and classical languages were A* or A and almost 60% of grades achieved in mathematics and science were A* or A. 56% of CHS pupils achieved full marks in at least one or more of their modules and 95% of students achieved at least 5 A*- C grades which included mathematics and English.

ordano Community Trust Sports Centre has undergone new branding to reflect the brand new facilities now available.

GO at Gordano is pleased to announce that a new £1.3 million sports facility is about to open its doors to the community. The sports centre, which is based on the site of Gordano School, is a thriving community facility that is already home to the majority of local teams across a wide range of sports, whilst also offering children’s birthday parties, health and fitness classes, an extensive children’s holiday program and a wide range of indoor and outdoor facilities available to hire seven days a week.

Due to its success and the need for more indoor space for school PE the new sports facility includes a second four court sports hall, community only changing rooms, disabled wet room and main reception area.

The sports hall which will open in October 2014 will be able to accommodate badminton, netball, basketball, wheelchair based sports, futsal and indoor hockey,

State-of-the-art Sports Hall and Fitness Centre Opening January 2015

n January GO at Gordano will be opening the doors of its brand new gym, offering lifestyle fitness for all the family.

The new fitness equipment has been purchased from Matrix and includes a wide range of kit that is perfect for this community facility and will include a variety of cardiovascular apparatus, resistance weight machines, a free weight area and a stretching area.

The gym is also the first facility in Portishead to have MyRide installed, for all those cycling enthusiasts. MyRide is an immersive, high-resolution cycling fitness adventure.

As Go at Gordano is also home to a wheelchair basketball team a number of the machines in the gym are adapted so they can be used by the disabled community, including the Matrix Krank Cycle.

last month and is already proving popular with book lovers both in the town and from the surrounding areas.

Alistair, 27, who has completed a PHD in archaeology, had difficulty reading when he was younger, and said: “I am dyslexic, so reading was very difficult to me until the age of 14. Since then I have been passionate about reading and books and opening the bookshop is another way for me to overcome my dyslexia.

“Clevedon doesn’t have a bookshop, apart from a small WH Smith, and we thought Hill Road was the perfect location. I grew up on Hill Road so opening the bookshop is like coming home for me.”

Chloe, 28 and originally from Preston, said: “We’ve always joked about running a bookshop for as long as we can remember, so to actually be doing it is a dream come true.

“We went into lots of bookshops to see what we thought worked and what didn’t and put it all together.

“For example, the children’s section is downstairs but the teenagers section is upstairs as we feel teenagers like to be independent. When I was a teenager I hated the books I was interested in being in the children’s section.”

The result is a fantastic space and everything a bookshop should be.

Books on the Hill stocks all of the latest titles, covers a wide range of genres, offers a book ordering service and will be hosting author signings and events throughout the year.

They will also be introducing a post box in the shop for anyone to post reviews of books, some of which will feature in the review section of their website.

Alistair added: “Yes it’s a business but to us it’s a bookshop for the whole community.”

Alistair and Chloe met at university and are now engaged. With the opening of their first business together too, their own story is evolving at a rapid rate.

ove it or hate it, Halloween rolls along on 31st October. There are many different suggestions as to the origins of Halloween and why it is celebrated in UK. The different theories can create quite a debate, with pagan

Halloween is on the eve of All Saints day in the Christian calendar and on the eve of the pagan Celtic festival known as Samhain.

Rightly or wrongly, the commercialisation of Halloween has seen it become an excuse to dress up and have a party.

The fun however, can turn to terror as youngsters’ trick or treating can get out of hand and leave some members of the public fearful.

The Portishead police team has for some years successfully run a campaign to keep youngsters safe at Halloween and stop antisocial behaviour. Police community support officers visit primary schools to provide youngsters with safety tips about trick or treating and also guidelines to stop them causing annoyance or disturbance to other people.

The message is simple: “Have a good time at Halloween but stay safe and don’t engage in antisocial behaviour.

From high- flying Naval Officer to near paralysis – and then successful artist

W

hen you meet Clare Wright it’s hard to believe this glamorous girl was Esso International’s first female Maritime Officer controlling some of the largest ships in the world. Now a very successful artist, Clare has navigated some rough waters to get to where she is now.

In 2004 she was diagnosed with a severe form of arthritis and a complication threatened to paralyse her. She was forced to leave her much loved life at sea and faced major spinal surgery.

“I ended up quite ill,” said Clare. “Being a very fit and active person, it was hard to handle. I ended up in so much pain that I couldn’t carry on working. I’ve always been creative and after the surgery I started painting again and I worked hard to get my strength back. I think if you really put your mind to something then you can do it.”

Clare has developed a style that is very much her own and one that appears to fit seamlessly into contemporary and traditional environments, in almost any

room in the house. Fizz Gallery founder and co-owner Sandy Prater said: “To have the whole gallery full of Clare’s work is going to be fantastic. It’s a real privilege to be working with such a successful artist.”

Portishead Film P

ortishead Film will be starting their new season of films with Philomena, a sophisticated comedy that tackles serious issues with a lightness of touch and a spirit of steel. It was nominated in four categories at both the Oscars and the BAFTAs and has won many international awards.

The true story is about journalist Martin Sixsmith and Philomena Lee, the woman he meets when he returns to journalism, having lost his job as a spin doctor. She is an Irishwoman who, as a teenager, had a child that she gave up.

Together, they set out to find him.

The pair are hopelessly mismatched, which gives rise to many humorous moments. The film also contains a rich seam of anger that starts with Magdalene homes and finally takes us across the Atlantic to one of the great shames of Ronald Reagan’s administration.

Steven Coogan gives a masterclass in restraint and Dame Judi Dench’s dotty delivery is superb. This film is perhaps the most subversive British blend of social comment and comedy since the heyday of Ealing Studios.

Philomena will be screened on Friday October 3 at the Jubilee Hall, Slade Road, Portishead. The film starts at 8.00pm with refreshments available from 7.30pm. Admission is £5 or £4.50 concessions. All are most welcome.

news for all you hardy outdoor swimmers Ecoldxciting out there – Portishead Open Air Pool is trialing water swimming sessions. Even though the pool has now closed for the main 2014 season, it is open on Saturday mornings between 9am-midday for a trial period. Admission will be a flat £5 for everyone and the wearing of wetsuits will be encouraged but not obligatory. Hot showers and hot drinks from the tuck shop will be on hand to warm you up afterwards.

If the sessions are successful and there is enough demand, the trust is considering a Christmas Day swim. Watch this space!

endy and Bob have run the Come Dancing School in Portishead for 23 years, teaching all styles of Ballroom/Latin dancing to all ages.

They will be running new beginners’ classes at Avon Way Hall, Portishead, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.30-9.30pm starting on Thursday, October 9. They will also have other classes running on Wednesdays at the St Barnabas Centre, West Hill, Portishead.

Wendy has been dancing since the age of eight and as a junior competitor won numerous titles, including the West of England Junior Championship.

She has made numerous appearances on the television programme Come Dancing

as a competitor, demonstrator and adjudicator.

In addition she was the subject of a national television documentary highlighting her career as an amateur dancer, after becoming the undefeated British Champion.

Most recently, Wendy has been on the selection committee for the Classique De Danse Awards and she is a member of the UK Alliance Professional Teachers of Dancing.

A school reunion is taking place at Somerset Hall in The Precinct in Portishead High Street on November 1 at 7.30pm.

The event is for former pupils who attended Gordano School between 1956 and 1965.

Portishead’s Ben Driscoll- Price heads for Britain’s Best showdown

ortishead hairdresser and photographic stylist, Ben Driscoll-Price has triumphed again by reaching the finals in, not only the 2014 British Hairdressing awards, but also the finals of the National Hairdressers’ Federation’s Britain’s Best Photographic competition.

The 26-year-old senior stylist said: “To be nominated for both contests meant a great deal, but to find myself a finalist in both is incredibly exciting.”

Reaching the final three in two of the categories, Ben will travel to the finals of Britain’s Best Photographic Stylist of the Year Awards at the Heritage Motor Centre in Warwickshire on November 16th.

Ben is one of three photographic stylists in the UK to be shortlisted for the Ladies’ Category 2 – Fashion Look (all) and with a different collection he is in the final three of the Ladies Category 3 – Fashion Collection (all).

Exercise of the Month: Cable Crunches

C

able Crunches are one of my favourite abdominal exercises; however, an eagerness to lift too much weight and having insufficient strength in the muscles stabilising the hips and shoulders are the two inter-related fundamental factors that see many gym-goers perform a Kneeling Cable Crunch with poor form.

Excessive movement within these regions will allow you to complete a heavy-lift, but places much less emphasis on your abdominal muscles.

For the seasoned trainer, the quick-answer is to simply decrease the weight being lifted and avoid excessive movement around your hips and shoulders, spreading your knees apart and sitting back slightly can help further.

There are also some Cable Crunch variations that work perfectly well and reduce the demand on stabilising muscles, which can be useful Less Body Fat in the case of many novice trainers.

A Flatter Tummy First, try the Cable Toned Muscles Crunch either seated (on a workout Improved Fitness Levels bench) or standing, which then serves to More Energy, Strengh and Confidence. stabilise the hips.

ost rabbits are very sociable animals and often like to be in the company of other rabbits, their owner, or other pets in the household.

If possible, having a pair of rabbits is preferable to a solitary pet rabbit. The best

paired bond is between a neutered male and a neutered female, who often remain close for life. Pairings of two neutered males or two neutered females can be less reliable and may (but not always) result in the odd disagreement and fight. Same-sex pairs are more likely to work if the rabbits are introduced when both young (ideally under 12 weeks of age), or if they are from the same litter (ideally brother and sister). Rabbits that pair and bond well will become extremely close and should not be separated for long periods of time.

If circumstances do not allow for a pair of rabbits, then a neutered (castrated) male is often more manageable than a neutered (spayed) female. Single rabbits can form close friendships with their owners, or with other pets in the household. Introductions should be done gradually and supervised. Flea control for any household cat or dog, as well as for rabbits, is very important as fleas are the main carriers of Myxomatosis (a horrible, often fatal viral infection in rabbits).

Neutering is generally recommended, as entire (non-spayed) female rabbits can become a bit grumpy when in season; spaying also decreases the probability of uterine cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, pyometra (uterine infection), or other such diseases. Male rabbits that are left entire are more likely to urinate around the house (territorial marking or anxiety-related urination), and are more at risk of diseases such as testicular cancer, testicular torsion, and several others. Male rabbits can be castrated from the age of three months onwards, and female rabbits can be spayed from the age of four months onwards (although this can vary a little depending on their size and maturity).

More and more homeowners are taking advantage of estate planning to secure their property and savings.

ou don’t need to be wealthy to want to ensure that hard earned assets, such as the family home, are passed on to your loved ones. Unfortunately, were you to require long term care, your family may not necessarily receive all, or any of the inheritance you intended them to have.

If you go into care all your assets including your home, savings and income are assessable for means testing. You are at risk of losing your home to care costs when you enter care after owning your home jointly with a spouse, unmarried partner, or civil partner and they have passed away. The full value of your home will have passed to you absolutely and you will be assessed on the property’s full value along with any formerly joint held assets, such as savings.

Thankfully, with a little planning both your home and savings can be protected.

By changing the way you and your spouse or partner own your home, to tenants in common and by making use of mirror wills and simple trust planning, you can ensure your property is protected and can be passed onto your loved ones as you intended.

As well as possible protection from care costs you can also ensure that your assets are protected from attack by divorce, re-marriage after death, bankruptcy and taxation.

Placing the assets into Trust ensures that if your children/chosen beneficiaries are subject to divorce proceedings, what you intended them to receive is protected from any divorce settlements.

Similarly, if any of your beneficiaries are subject to creditor claims or bankruptcy, their inheritance would not be exposed to these claims. Placing half of the family home and other assets into a Trust on first death ensures that, should the surviving partner marry in the future, those assets cannot be taken into the marriage and removes the threat of your own children being disinherited. The survivor is still able to make use of the assets in the Trust.

Fallen leaves can be left to rot down or collected for leaf mould, however diseased material is best cleared and removed from your garden completely or burnt to prevent pests and diseases over winter. Put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost.

Get your compost going, it is vital to replace the goodness in soil after a hefty growing season and autumn produces masses of garden waste that will put invaluable organic richness back into the ground. Add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable and bedding plants, herbaceous leftovers, thatch, moss and cuttings from the lawn, weeds (but not the roots unless they have been completely shredded), hedge clippings, kitchen peelings and tea bags are perfect.

Turn your compost every couple of weeks and remember do not add diseased or pest-ridden material, it will reappear with a vengeance next year!

It really is worth thoroughly cleaning out your greenhouse now that your covered crops are over. It will prevent pests from hibernating and reappearing next year.

ow do you make a tomato turn red? And no, I’m not trying to tell you a rude joke. This has been my dilemma in recent weeks whilst staring at all these wonderfully chubby but green tomatoes. A quick check on the iPad reveals it’s either been too hot or too cold! They won’t go red if the temperature is above 86F or below 50F and over the summer we’ve gone from one extreme to the other quite often and rarely stayed in the middle zone. The beautiful red colour of a ripe tomato seems like it will never come. Fortunately it will (iPad says so, so it must be true), I just need staying power. Although when it happens I’ll most likely be on holiday so best mate Penny will nick them all! If, like me, you want to speed up the process then pick the tomatoes, place on a shelf in a warm place and cover with newspaper until they ripen. Easy when you know how, eh?

We continue to harvest lots and this month got a real kick out of pulling together a veggie box for a raffle prize at the Fowler’s Garden Party held in support of SANDS. There were ten of our veggies in there – marrow, courgette, French beans, peas, carrots,

Friends love it but hilariously have started asking if we’re growing their favourites. Hence next year will see shallots join the crops so the Fowlers can have them in time for Christmas 2015!

Aware of the constant supply of courgettes friends have started sharing their favourite recipes with me. One of them is shown on the next page.

Chop or grate the vegetables. Melt the butter or heat the oil in a large pan. Add onions and pepper and saute for a few minutes. Add the carrots and tinned tomatoes.

Add 2 stock cubes and water. Bring to boil and simmer until the vegetables are cooked. Add basil or herbs and seasoning to taste. Blitz in the blender until preferred texture.

Serve with nice crusty bread! Any leftovers will freeze well.

Director’s loan accounts

Q:

My overdrawn director’s loan account has increased again this year. What are the consequences of this?

A:

If you’re a company director and take money out of your company that’s not a salary or a dividend - over and above any money you’ve put in – you are classed as having received the benefit of a director’s loan.

Consequently, your company may have to pay tax on any amount you’ve not repaid to the company by nine months after the end of your Corporation Tax accounting period.

The current tax rate for directors’ loans is 25 per cent of the loan, although it is repayable should the balance fall. It may also need to be reported on the company’s corporation tax return.

There may also be Income Tax and National Insurance implications

for you and for your company.

Depending on the circumstances, it may need to be reported on form P11D as a benefit in kind and the company will have to pay Class 1A NICs on the value of the benefit.

Typically, a benefit in kind would only arise on loans greater than £10,000 (2013/14 – £5,000) throughout the tax year and is based on HMRC’s official rate of interest, which for 2014/15 is 3.25% (2013/14 – 4%).
