Join the Portishead Poppy People

L

eading charity The Royal British Legion is searching for more volunteers in Portishead and the surrounding areas to join in collecting to help those who have dedicated their lives to the armed forces.

The ‘Poppy People’ start collecting from late October until Remembrance Sunday on November 10, in this area you will see them at Waitrose, Co-op and Gordano services.

Portishead Sports Centre secures £20,000 from legacy fund

ordano Sports Centre has secured Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.

Sport England has confirmed the

Portishead facility is one of more than 1,300 sports projects across the country to receive National Lottery funding through Inspired Facilities, part of its Olympic and Paralympic legacy programme.

Gordano Sports Centre has received £20,000 of National Lottery funding to upgrade the disabled facilities at the centre and improve access for disabled customers. The project will also see the centre hold disability and inclusive sport camps and purchase equipment that will allow sport for all in the community.

Olympics, this National Lottery investment is helping us deliver a lasting sporting legacy in Portishead.

“With investment now on offer from our Inspired Facilities fund until 2017, we look forward to supporting many more sports clubs in the South West which play such a vital role in grassroots sport.”

This is the second major development at the Gordano School sports centre. Plans were recently unveiled for the building of a second sports hall and fitness suite at the St Mary’s Road site.

A spokesman for the centre said: “Both the school and the Community Trust Sports Centre are delighted with these developments which will have a positive impact for school children and the local community as a whole.”

Investigation confirms Black Rock Quarry fire was arson

A

n investigation in to the fire at the Black Rock Quarry specialist police training centre in Portishead’s Valley Road has established that the cause was arson.

The fire, which caused millions of pounds worth of damage to the £16 million centre, was reported on Tuesday August 27, but smoke could still be seen coming from the site almost a week later.

Valley Road, a popular route to and from the police headquarters and nearby housing estates, was closed until Sunday September 1, resulting in diverted traffic causing mayhem in other roads around Portishead.

Detective Superintendent Andy Williams, head of the major crime investigation team, said: “Very soon after the fire was discovered, we began a detailed and thorough investigation. We brought in a forensic scientist with specific expertise in the field of arson to work closely alongside our own crime scene investigation and forensic teams to get to the root cause of the fire. Together, they have concluded

that the building was deliberately set alight.

“Our searches for forensic evidence have been carried out in the most meticulous way despite the devastation caused by the fire and our examination of the scene continues still. We are under no illusions about the scale of the task we face and are likely to remain at the scene for some time but we will do everything in our power to ensure that whoever is responsible is brought to justice. If anyone has any information that might help us then please call us.”

Lifeboat jigsaw now on sale

P

ortishead Lifeboat will be the latest organisation to benefit from the sale of a jigsaw on sale at Morgan Westley in Portishead High Street.

The 500 piece jigsaw features the lifeboat and the Black Nore and Battery Point lighthouses. The lifeboat trust will receive a donation from the sale of each puzzle.

This is the fourth jigsaw Matt and Rosemary Westley, who own the shop, have created. All the jigsaws feature local scenes and make ideal gifts. Other charities to benefit from the sale of the jigsaws are Portishead Christmas Lights, Portishead in Bloom and Portishead Railway Group.

irls from 3rd Redcliffe Bay Guides joined forces with Redcliffe Bay Rangers this year for their annual summer camp this year.

Leader Jan Harrison took the girls to Stiles Camp Site in Lower Failand for a week to enjoy the outdoor life in a camp which has become a firm favourite with the girls despite, the absence of any electricity on site.

Race brings boats to marina T

he holms race organised by Portishead Cruising Club last month, attracted almost 100 entrants, resulting in the town’s marina experiencing its busiest weekend of the year.

Boats from around the country took part in the race which started at Portishead Pier. Against the clock, the

boats sailed to Flatholm and Steepholm and then back to Battery Point to see who could complete the course in the shortest possible time.

Cardiff boat Hidden Secret came in first place, Portishead Cruising Club member David Randall came second with White Spirit and Sabrina,

another Portishead boat, owned by Mr and Mrs Dring and admirably crewed by Margaret and Rodney Deacon came third.

A private social event with hot food was organised for entrants at the nearby youth centre following the race.

arlier in the year we reported that Jamie Hayman of Jamie Hayman Plumbing and Patrick Hughes of H & H Property Services were flying out to Zambia to do vital work on the Mutende Childrens Village, an orphanage run by a Bristol based charity.

Following a successful run in the Bristol Half Marathon both lads, along with a third runner Paul Uttley who heads the charity, raised more money to allow them to continue their work in the Zambian village.

During their visit in May they carried out vital work helping to dig a bore hole which has allowed the children at the orphanage to secure a constant supply of fresh water.

Jamie and Paul are part of a small team which has recently returned to Mutende to complete the installation of showers, toilets, basins and kitchen sinks.

Every volunteer pays for their own plane

ticket, travel, food and accommodation costs, so every penny raised by the team goes towards materials and facilities for the children.

Emily Rickard from Nailsea was also chosen as a contest winner and will open the Ewe-Knit 20 shop at 20 Colliers Walk to provide machine knitting classes, materials for creative and hobbyist knitwear, and her own range of knitted clothing and accessories.

More than 30 local people submitted their ideas to win a shop in the Nailsea centre free for a year and shortlisted applicants faced a panel of judges in a Dragons’ Den style pitch.

Mark Robinson of Crown Glass landlord Ellandi, who was one of the judges, said: “We had a fantastic response to this competition and we simply couldn’t decide between Fran and Emily, who both had great ideas which were well thought

through and which will add to the Nailsea shopping experience.”

Each of the winners will get the retail unit free of rent and rates for a year and receive free mentoring help and support from local financial, banking, retail and marketing experts. The prizes are worth over £25,000 to each winner.

Fran said: “I was shell shocked when I heard I had won the shop – I was up against such strong competition. I’m delighted and very excited and thrilled that I will be getting some business advice from local mentors.”

A fifth generation to start work at Tudor Garage After 118 years of the Coles family running a business in Portishead High Street, the next generation is to set start his apprenticeship. Joe Coles, 16, has joined Tudor Garage to carry on in the family run business, now run by his dad Vaughn, mum Jane and his cousin , Martin Petty. Martin’s son Jordan and cousin Peter Atherton also work at the garage having joined straight from school in 1984.

In true family business style, the management value all their staff. Janet Tebbutt joined Tudor Garage as secretary in 1970 and still works there today!

Tudor Garage was built at 51 High Street, where it still operates, in 1955 by Joe’s great

grandfather George Coles.

Previous to that the Coles family operated businesses from 62 High Street and also at the Cabstand where Gordano Ford now stands.

After George retired in the early 60’s his son Brian and brother-in-law Robert carried on the family business. Tudor Garage was the first to carry out M.O.T.s in Portishead and continued to develop as the number of vehicles on the roads increased.

Martin joined the workforce in 1972 as the workshop foreman and in 1980 Vaughn started his apprenticeship.

Martin and Vaughn took over the running of the workshop in 1984 and then in 1990 when Brian retired Vaughn and Martin took over the whole of Tudor Garage, joined by Jane in 2003. The garage, which comprises a fully equipped garage for mechanical and bodywork repairs has a staff of 10.

Vaughn, Martin and Jane say they are pleased to see another generation starting

in the business. Joe, who will attend S & B Automotive Academy on block release, said: “I’m really excited to be the fifth generation starting at the garage and can’t wait to prove myself.”

Vaughn, Jane and Martin hope that their son’s will continue the family business and that Vaughn and Jane’s younger son Luke will join in a few years time.

Next month in Gordano Living the Coles family will share with readers its business history in Portishead High Street dating back to 1895.

25 Years of Bowling

ortishead Royal British Legion Ladies Bowling Club celebrated its 25th anniversary on August 17 at the club pavilion and were attended by almost all present and many past members, some flying in from France and Spain.

They enjoyed fun bowls and lunch with a celebratory cake made and decorated by the vice-captain.

The club was formed in 1988 by six ladies whose husbands bowled for the Legion Men. With the help of the county, Portishead Ladies Club and the Legion Men, the club progessed and by 1989 there were approximately 20 members.

Ashcombe Ladies and Arrow Ladies clubs helped with the first matches and as rink space was minimal they allowed the Legion Ladies to play on their greens.

Over the years the Legion Ladies have had many successes, the greatest being the winning of the national Top Club in 2012.

Several players have also had individual success in nationals.

t Peter’s Church in Portishead is looking forward to welcoming a very special congregation this month. On Saturday October 5 at 2pm they will be holding their first Pet Service, in memory of local dog trainer, Mandy Blake, who died in 2012. Mandy’s parents, John and Mary Blake, and some of her friends are helping to organise the service which they hope will become an annual event.

Reverend Bryant says he will never forget the sight of about 50 well-behaved dogs

who attended Mandy’s funeral and he is looking forward to welcoming dogs on leads and other pets in carriers to the forthcoming service.

The service will both honour Mandy’s memory and celebrate the important role pets play in our lives. It will also remember all animals that suffer in the world and honour the special way pets help humans as well as helping raise money for the charity Canine Partners, which trains dogs to assist people with disabilities.

ast month volunteers braved the icy waters of Portishead marina in a sponsored Newfoundland Dog Rescue to support people with multiple sclerosis.

The event was organised by the West of England MS Therapy Centre, previously based in Nailsea, but now based in Bradley Stoke.

Newfound Friends was formed in 1990 with the objective of using the skills of the Newfoundland Dog to raise money for charity. They have become regulars at Portishead’s harbourside, raising money for a variety of good causes.

The event in September helped raise funds for the therapy centre which needs to raise in excess of £300,000 each year to keep the doors open for its 275 members.

ove it or hate it, Halloween rolls along on 31st October. There are many different suggestions as to the origins of Halloween and why it is celebrated in the UK. The different theories can create quite a debate, with pagan and Christian celebrations mingling in a fascinating argument over superstition and religious beliefs.

Rightly or wrongly, the commercialisation

of Halloween has seen it become an excuse to dress up and have a party. The fun however, can turn to terror as youngsters’ trick or treating can get out of hand and leave some members of the public fearful.

The Portishead police team has for some years successfully run a campaign to keep youngsters safe at Halloween and stop antisocial behaviour. Police community support officers visit primary schools to provide youngsters with safety tips about trick or treating and also guidelines to stop them causing annoyance or disturbance to other people.

So with keeping safe and being considerate in mind, why not start planning your

lifton High School has introduced an innovative and exciting new programme for Year 10 and 11.

A new Life Skills and Competencies programme of courses will extend life skills and give pupils a wider education, greatly augmenting their academic qualifications.

The new programme will enhance and formalise core transferable competencies such as study skills, communication, financial management and independent learning, being studied alongside a range of flexible options for developing a particular skill or experience such as photography, food hygiene, Chinese language, journalism, Shakespeare, Duke

of Edinburgh or sports leadership.

Many options will lead to an extra valuable qualification or certification and a final element of the programme will involve undertaking work in the local community, providing the additional valuable experience of making applications and being in the workplace.

Outstanding results at Gordano

G

ordano School in Portishead celebrated another set of outstanding results for both A’levels and GCSEs this year.

More than three quarters of the grades achieved by six form students in their A’levels were graded A* to C and for the ninth consecutive year the pass rate at A-E grades exceeded 99%.

A record 27 students achieved at least one A* grade.

Headteacher Gary Lewis said: “This is another wonderful set of results from an outstanding sixth form. Our cohort has expanded once again and it is pleasing to see the number of distinctions on vocational courses as our students excel across a diverse range of study paths. As

well as university destinations, we have a number of students who have successfully obtained apprenticeships at the highest level across a range of sectors.”

The GCSE results were also first class, with over 77% of students achieving five or more passes at C grade or above and 66% achieving A* to C grades including English and maths. 35% of the year group also qualified for the new English Baccalaureate which rewards students who achieve passes at C grade and above in English, Maths, Sciences, Modern Languages and either History or Geography.

A new record for best performers was set

with 57 pupils achieving eight plus A* and A grades, of whom 19 banked five A*s or more.

Mr Lewis added: “This has been a stunningly successful year for Gordano GCSE students with nearly 30% A* and A grades. I am also pleased to see that our students achieved well across the board and not just at the top. Although it is noticeable that there has been tough marking at the C/D borderline, especially in the core subjects, that seems to be part of the national picture.

“Overall this is a really strong set of results.

Congratulations to our students and a huge thank you to staff and parents who supported our young people to success.”

Print maker Claire comes to Fizz feminine, pretty, and delicate. The layered 3D effects that I use are not often used by print makers. People say my work is relaxing and I think that’s why they are drawn to it - there’s not much relaxing in the world these days.

Have you always been an artist?

No, I started my career as a primary school teacher in inner city London but I returned to Bristol in 1996 and rediscovered my love of art in 2004 when I did my Foundation Course at Bristol School of Art.

Continually supporting local artists, Fizz Gallery has teamed up with print maker Clare Cutts, whose work will be on show at the gallery in Hill Road from Tuesday, October 1.

Here we chat to Clare about her work and her home life.

Could you describe your work to someone who hasn’t seen it before?

I think the best way to describe it is labour intensive! Joking aside though, it’s been described as powerful and emotional yet

What’s been a highlight of your career as an artist so far?

Winning a commission from Ralph Lauren earlier this year was fantastic, as was selling out at the London Affordable Art Fair. Both of these things I never imagined would happen to me!

If you get any spare time, what do you do with it?

We’ve just got a rescue dog (Riley) so any spare time I had is being taken over by him!

As a family we love to go camping in our camper van. We also love snowboarding although my kids Sid and Rosie are far better than me!

The Lions Club of Portishead T

he Lions are the world’s largest service organisation with over 1.3 million members worldwide.

The Lions Club of Portishead has been serving the local community for more than 40 years. They are a group of men and women who work together to achieve things for our community, which as individuals they could not.

The Lions Club of Portishead was formed in 1970 and currently has around 30 members. Although they are called the Lions Club of Portishead, the area they

cover stretches from Weston in Gordano to Abbots Leigh.

The Lions motto is “We Serve”.

All members share a desire to serve those in need in our area and further afield.

Being a member is open to adults who feel they would like to put something back in to the community and have some fun at the same time. Members get involved in team activities including fundraising, community and social and attend monthly club meetings.

For those who don’t want to commit to

being a full member of the Lions, there is the ‘Friends’ group.

Friends just assist at some of the events but don’t attend the regular meetings.

Carol’s Wee Walk

I

n August Carol Smithard embarked on a walk from Lands End to John O’Groats and across to Orkney and Shetland. She did this via 43 Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) stations and climbing some of the highest peaks on her journey including Ronas Hill, Snowdon, Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Ward Hill. Carol’s aim was to raise £20,000 for the RNLI.

ortishead Coastguards have been busy with water rescue training which has been taking place in the local swimming pool.

They also attended the Wallace and Gromit day on the sea front where many people listened to a variety of bands and enjoyed a whole host of stalls.

Shouts:

August 24: Called to spot a drifting vessel with engine problems somewhere off Battery Point. The lifeboat launched and they took the vessel in tow to Portishead Marina where the coastguard helped them berth the vessel.

August 28: Called to assist police, fire and ambulance at an incident beneath the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Look out for the new highly logoed coastguard vehicle that the station has recently taken charge off.

As Carol made her way to Weston RNLI station she was told about the plans for a new station in Portishead and so changed her route to include Portishead. She was welcomed by the Portishead Lifeboat crew who were interested to hear all about her trek.

50th anniversary production for Little Theatre

ortishead LeRoc has been helping people learn to dance since 2005.

Classes are relaxed, the steps are easy to learn and by the end of the first evening you’ll know enough to have confidence on the dance floor.

You’ll jive along to modern chart hits as well as the classic songs from recent decades and there’s no need to book or bring a partner.

Heather has studied different dance styles throughout her life and is a qualified LeRoc teacher with the LeRoc Modern Jive Federation and the United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dance.

She said: “It’s wonderful seeing people learning a new skill and discovering a love of something they often never thought they could do.

“I believe dancing should be fun, stress-free and that you should go home at the end of the evening with a smile on your face.

ailsea Little Theatre’s 50th anniversary production is Dancing at Lughnasa, which was premiered at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre and was presented

by Nailsea Theatre Club in 1996.

The play is set in 1936 in a remote part of County Donegal and the events are narrated by the adult Michael, who at the time of the play was the seven-yearold son of the youngest of five sisters.

It is a tender, poignant and humorous study which evokes the subtle and complex pattern of these women’s lives within their household and the community outside.

Dancing at Lughnasa runs from Monday, October 21-Saturday, October 26.

That’s Entertainment Singing Lessons at The Rock Project

T

he Rock Project now offers singing tuition at its Nailsea, Clevedon and Portishead schools for 7-11 and 12-18 year olds.

Each two-hour weekly session includes a one hour lesson in a maximum group of five students with a highly experienced and fully qualified vocal coach. In each lesson they will work through various rock and pop songs they have chosen. Your child will learn various vocal techniques as well as a range of different warm ups to train their voice in a fun and social environment.

After each lesson they will then participate in a social hour with the rest of the group, singing with a live band whilst taking part in a weekly team based music quiz.

Every July, a rock concert is staged and all students perform what they have learnt for their friends and family. There are also spaces for all abilities on guitar, bass guitar and drums and all instruments can be provided.

This year’s end of year concert at Princes Hall in Clevedon saw around 80 young guitarists, bassists, drummers and vocalists perform a range of rock songs from several decades to a packed audience.

Andy Collins, who runs The Rock Project, said: “The students really outdid themselves this year, they were all brilliant and really rocked out to some great songs.”

he School of Dance now holds extremely popular classes in Portishead, Clevedon and Cheddar.

Ballet, tap and modern dance classes are on offer for pupils aged two-and-a-half upwards in Portishead with all new pupils receiving two free taster sessions and discounted uniform offers.

Principle Linzi Furneaux, who has eight years teaching experience and is a fully registered teacher with the British Theatre Dance Association, says: “All pupils at The School of Dance are trained and prepared to enter examinations if they wish to do so and are invited to take part in annual school shows at local theatres. Our recent exam success has seen pupils gaining passes in both merits and distinctions in all exams taken.”

ortishead residents Bernard McCall has been interested in merchant ships since his school days in the north of England. He wrote and published his first book in 1988.

After a full-time career as a teacher, including 13 years as deputy head of a school in Bristol, he took early retirement in 2005 to concentrate fulltime on publishing maritime books under the banner of Coastal Shipping Publications.

Recently, books on other modes of transport have also been published. Bernard has written and published two books about the ships that pass Battery Point, the first now out of print but the second, entitled ‘Still Passing the Point’ is available. His good friend Malcolm Cranfield, once a resident of Portishead, has written this new book, entitled ‘Bristol Port and Channel Nostalgia’, about ships seen locally in the 1960s and 1970s.

Poems of Portishead

T

his month sees the launch of a CD and book entitled ‘Portisheadno place to hide’ by Roy Hewetson, the CD was recorded at Nailsea Music Shop under the direction of James Dixon.

Reading from a collection of poems built up over the years, Roy covers the town and Gordano Valley in his poems, posing a number of questions about the area as it changes.

Roy, who has lived in Portishead for 14 years, said: “In the past I have seen other towns having a similar experience and exploding with development. I could see Portishead was going the same way and facing the same difficulties.

“I want people to think about the good and bad effects of change to both the town and the community.”

Roy, who has worked in the legal profession and as a journalist, has had his poems and short stories regularly published in a variety of magazines over the past 12 years.

The accompanying book reproduces the CD script with photos added.

The CD launch fits nicely with the opening of James’ new studio in Bedminster, designed to supplement his recordings at Nailsea Music Shop.

A taste of the Med in the heart of Portishead

ortishead locals and wine enthusiasts Mike Yeatman and his wife Chris are opening a new tapas restaurant in Portishead on 4th October.

The opening of Venga will be the culmination of months of hard work transforming the former cafe at 24 the High Street, previously empty for nearly 2 years.

The project started at the beginning of the year and really started to take shape 5 months ago with the refurbishment and guest accommodation now open above the tapas bar, comprising boutique bed and breakfast accommodation and a spacious self-catering 2 bedroom loft apartment.

The opening of Venga is the realisation of a dream that Mike and Chris have been considering for a number of years.

The idea was first conceived during the couple’s travels and they have drawn on many influences for the menu; from Barcelona, Madrid and Granada. Both share a passion for Mediterranean food and regularly prepare tapas, catering for large groups through Wine Friends, a local outdoor activity company. The couple’s meeting and marriage has extended their passion for both food and wine. They are united in a desire to eat well, eat varied and travel hydrated by the local wines wherever they can.

Describing the inspiration behind Venga Mike said “Over the past four years we have travelled extensively and Venga draws on many influences but the single lightning bolt was Barcelona last year. An evening out with friends, one of whom was our wonderful local ‘guide’ led us to some really, really great Tapas Bars. Pinchos (a snack, typically eaten in bars, traditional

in northern Spain) was the main order of the night.

The bars were piled high with prepared Tapas – charged by the number of cocktail sticks left on your plate at the end. The buzz was great with people bustling in for twenty minutes or staying the whole night”.

Venga will offer informal dining for the authentic Mediterranean experience; the simply cooked menu will be freshly prepared sourcing ingredients as locally as possible; even the authentic charcuterie comes from Castellano’s in Downend. “By supporting local business where possible, we are aiming to bring the taste of the Mediterranean with the best the South West has to offer, both reducing food miles and helping local economies” Mike said describing the ethos behind Venga.

Mike has a good knowledge in wine, having built professional experience over many years as both a wine collector and director of Wine Friends. “Our aim is to add the personal touch to the experience, all of the ingredients are selected by us. fter a long hot summer, enjoying our colourful gardens and overflowing fruit and veg plots, basking in the rewards of our hard work earlier in the year it is time to get off the sun loungers and get back in to some green fingered work in the garden.

As the main growing season comes to its end there is plenty to do. Below are a few reminders of what can be done this time of year.

Keep on weeding and have a gentle tidy up in your borders but hold back from a complete spring clean. Leave seed heads for the birds and as much cover as you can bear for wildlife who will appreciate the winter shelter.

Fallen leaves can be left to rot down or collected for leaf mould, however diseased material is best cleared and removed from your garden completely or burnt to prevent pests and diseases overwintering.

It is vital to replace the goodness in soil after a hefty growing season and autumn produces masses of garden waste for composting that will put invaluable organic richness back into the ground. Turn your compost every couple of weeks and remember do not add diseased or pest-ridden material it will reappear with a vengeance

Step 4 to selling your home: Fail to prepare, prepare to fail

Each month director Paul Kingston shares his knowledge and expertise on moving home with Gordano Living readers. Paul has written an in depth guide to selling your home, broken down in to seven steps, which is available by calling 844434. Paul is presenting excerpts from the guide in Gordano Living each month.

nce you have made a commitment to sell your home there are lots of jobs you can do to help you successfully attract a strong buyer and make sure the sale to them completes as smoothly as possible.

So far in Gordano Living over the past few months we have looked at the jargon used by those involved in the property market industry, at why it is important to invest in your home and allow it to act as its own sales tool and we have discussed the importance of getting the price right.

Last month we explored why it is necessary to be honest from the outset and resolve problems before they arise, either by putting any faults right prior to going to market, or being armed with details of how much it will cost to get any defects put right so that it can be discussed with the buyer.

This month we are going to look at the importance of choosing the right solicitor.

In my experience one of the most common factors that contributes to a lost sale is time. When buying a property the buyer has as long as it takes for legal contracts to exchange. On average this process, where

a mortgage is involved, takes between 90 and 120 days. It is important to remember that despite an offer, a purchaser can pull out at any time between acceptance of the offer and when the buyer signs the legal contract agreeing to purchase. Nothing is binding until that contract is signed and whatever monies have been spent on either side can’t be claimed back from the other. Obviously this is a two way road, as you, the seller, can also pull away without redress or compensation to the other side. However around 80% of aborted sales come from the buyer rejecting the property and on average one in four sales put together, never reach exchange. In what is perceived to be a depressed or down market this figure can easily increase to two in five, that’s 40%. Why? There are many reasons, but the main one is often that when the market and the media aren’t confident, people lose confidence too and this lack of confidence tends to set in during the period between making an offer and exchanging contracts. Buyers can also change their minds because other

Moving Home properties come along during the waiting period offering incentives like free carpets or stamp duty paid. It is fact that while waiting for exchange of contracts many buyers change their minds, so speeding up the process between handshake and exchange can be key to a successful sale.

You can increase your chances of a smooth, successful sale by being well prepared.

What will your buyer require in order to buy? Legal documentation and disbursements, land, water and drainage searches are likely to be required and so to save time, why not get them ready for your buyer’s solicitor and present the information as soon as you know who they are.

In my experience most people often don’t instruct a solicitor to act for them until they have a sale price agreed and even then they take a week, sometimes more to confirm this. I can only assume this is because they think that instructing a solicitor will instantly cost them money.

This is not necessarily the case. Check with your solicitor because firms operate in a variety of ways. Some solicitors will offer a no sale, no fee service, while others will charge but not until a sale progresses.

Either way the small cost, if any, of getting organised and your solicitor ready on the starting blocks is highly worth it and this will go a long way to reducing the waiting time and bringing you success.

People are often hesitant at engaging a solicitor because it is new territory for them. If they haven’t had dealings with solicitors before they may not know where to go or who to choose. My advice is get recommendations from others; don’t base your selection solely on price. Remember the whole reason for getting prepared in the first place is to speed up the process and you want your solicitor to support you on this.

A good solicitor is worth their weight in gold and I can’t stress that enough. They will not only be efficient but will always return your calls and keep you informed of progress. Ask your agent, or even a few agents, who they deal most with. Ask friends and family who has acted for them in the past and what their experiences were. Instructing a solicitor your agent has used before and has a good working relationship with can also be extremely beneficial. I recommend dealing with someone local to you; someone who you can make an appointment to see easily and who will deal with you personally.

If you have an apartment, it is essential that

you get the lease and accounts information to your solicitor as quickly as possible and make sure you have an up to date fire risk and asbestos report, these are essential to the buying solicitor.

In summary: Get a solicitor arranged before you go to market, choose someone local, who you know has done a good job for others.

Confirm the fee structure.

Obtain and provide all the information needed to process your sale with speed as early as possible.

If you have a lease or tie to your property make sure your solicitor has copies of all the relevant information.

If you are leasehold, confirm with the people or firms that run your management company that you are selling and ensure everything is in order for you to do so.

Remember, the shorter the time between you accepting an offer and exchanging contracts, the greater the chance of your sale completing successfully.

Food for Thought Spotlight on Gums

A

recent survey found that the lunch break is under threat with 54% of office workers regularly spending it at their desks. Most of us grab a pre-packaged sandwich or salad and eat what we believe to be a relatively healthy lunch at our desk.

Many pre-prepared lunch foods are packed with hidden fat, calories, salt and sugar. You may think a chicken wrap is a healthy option but you could be consuming as much as 500 calories and up to 18g of salt during your lunch break. The recommended daily salt intake for adults is just 6g, meaning you could eat as much as three times your daily allowance in one pre-packaged sandwich.

ealthy gums are very important for the long term health and stability of your teeth, but gums also have a big impact on general health. Gum disease (periodontitis) is a very common condition that most of us will suffer from during our lives. Ten percent of the population are particularly susceptible. It tends not to be painful so we may not know we have it and yet it is the biggest cause of tooth loss in adults.

Exercise of the Month: Full-body workout Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try. This month he provides a full-body workout for a complete and injury-free physique.

or those that have followed my ‘Exercise of the Month’ articles and have added them into a weekly routine (I hope you have!), very well done – you are now performing a comprehensive full-body workout filled with exercises to enhance your appearance, stay fit and healthy, and help avoid against injury.

Here’s my recommended order in which to perform the exercises and the primary reason for doing so: 1. Incline Dumbbell Press for a balanced chest.

2. Dumbbell Deadlifts for a strong lower back.

3. Stiff-Arm Pulldowns for a great lat stretch.

4. Leg Blaster Squats for shapely thighs with no unwanted stress.

5. Seated Calf Raises for diamond-shaped calves.

6. Triceps Pressdowns for improved arm aesthetics.

7. Zottman Curls for all-round arm development.

8. Stiff-Arm Circles for injury-free shoulders.

9. Hip Flexion to truly tax those abs.

Sarah Garlick, a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapists, is an experienced

and qualified mentor and counsellor who, although offers counselling for all, specialises in helping students (especially those preparing for university), teenagers and young adults. Sarah also has a great deal of experience working with new mums. She works as a school counsellor, is a consultant Wellbeing Mentor at UWE and in the past has worked for the NHS and lectured in Counselling Skills at The City of Bristol College.

New Boxercise Classes

A

fter starting Missfit in May running outdoor bootcamps, former primary school teacher Sam Blackmore-Squires has continued her training and achieved qualifications to allow her to expand her fitness. Sam has now launched a series of Boxercise classes.

Boxercise started around 20 years ago and has become known as the world’s leading boxing fitness provider. The workout uses the entire body working to improve cardiovascular fitness, burn fat and tone the major muscle groups. It also enhances sport specific senses such as hand-eye coordination, balance and timing.

Missfit classes start as a circuit style class, including boxing style stations, such as focus pads, skipping ropes, medicine balls and other more general exercises found in good circuits classes. Eight punches are taught in total including jabs, cross jabs, hooks and uppercuts.

Portishead football team graces Wembley turf

Y

oung footballers in the Portishead Juniors were given a once in a lifetime opportunity when they were invited to be part of a 10 team parade ahead of the 2013 FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium this summer.

At the annual curtain raiser to the Premier League season, players from the Portishead club took part in a procession of teams around the pitch as Premier League winners Manchester United prepared to take on FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic in front of an 80,235 strong crowd.

Celebrating grassroots football on the most impressive stage, Portishead Juniors were given the opportunity by local McDonalds franchisee Tim Lamb. Tim has been involved with the club for three years and has supported them as part of the McDonalds Club Twinning programme.

The McDonalds Club Twinning programme started in 2008 and has already seen more than 700 grassroots clubs across the country twinned with McDonalds restaurants; receiving support through the provision of kit and equipment, help with

facilities, business advice and even partnering to host football events.

Kris Soni, coach at Portishead Juniors, said: “This was an absolutely amazing experience for all our players. To be able to walk out at Wembley with some of the best players in the country watching on is incredible.

We are grateful to Tim for giving us this opportunity and for the support he has given the club over the past three years. We are looking forward to continuing to work with him in the future.”

Tim, who owns three McDonalds restaurants in the local area, said: “I have supported Portishead Juniors for a number of years now and this is a nice reward for all of the fantastic work they do for our local community. This was an experience I knew they would all love as passionate football

Gordano Valley Archers

G

ordano Valley Archers held their second Big Weekend event in conjunction with a number of local sporting organisations. The event involved a festival of sports activity including golf, fencing, football, hockey and tennis, as well as the main attraction of archery.

The treasure hunt and a barbecue sponsored by Tesco were also extremely popular and around £600 was raised for the club’s local link

charity, Children’s Hospice South West.

Club chairman, Paul Maines, said: “I am very proud of the club and all the volunteers who gave up so much of their time to the event and to The Downs School which made so much of the school and venue available to us.”

The club has already received many enquiries about archery and will be contacting those who left contact details in

the near future.

ine gymnasts from the Portishead Academy competed in the SW Regional Grade Championships and all nine gained distinctions, the highest classification.

Becca Ballam and Heather Marshall, The Academy’s youngest, both competed in Grade 14. Both excelled on vault with Becca placing 2nd and Heather placing 7th. In the all-around rankings Becca placed 5th and Heather 9th.

Maya Bamber, Lily Hancorn, Emmy Turner, Katie Jones and Imogen Timbrell all competed in Grade 13.

Maya excelled on floor in 4th place and an 11th all around ranking. Lily placed 5th on beam, 4th floor, 2nd vault and 8th all around. Imogen placed 2nd on floor, 3rd beam 4th range and conditioning and 7th all around. Katie placed 2nd on range and conditioning,

3rd floor and top scored vault and placed 2nd all around. The top scoring Grade 13 gymnast was Emmy, who placed 3rd on bars, 2nd vault and top scored beam and floor.

The rates are due to change on 1st October 2013 to: • £6.31 – the main rate for workers aged 21 and over • £5.03 – 18-20 year old rate • £3.72 – the 16-17 year old rate for workers above school leaving age but under 18 • £2.68 – the apprentice rate, for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship Last year, only the over 21s and apprentices saw an increase in the NMW but this year, all of the rates have increased.
