elcome to Gordano Living for August.

As more of us choose to holiday in the UK and the trend for ‘staycations’ continues, we offer some top tips on what to do in North Somerset in our Summer Fun feature.

We are spoilt for choice with visitor attractions and there are some great summer festivals coming up this month, including the worldfamous Bristol Balloon Fiesta.

There are also some wonderful smaller scale community events on our doorstep where you can enjoy yourself and support your local organisations at the same time.

Whether you have a young family, are retired, or are young free and single, there should be something which appeals.

If you are going further afield this August (or we luck out with a summer heatwave!) you may be thinking about toning up in preparation. If so, our beauty section could be for you.

School pupils get back to nature

S

tudents at Gordano School took outdoor learning to a new level with an exciting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) project.

A group from Year 9 spent time during the summer term building outdoor classrooms at the outdoor woodland learning centre on Brown Rock Farm, Tickenham.

The six-week project formed part of an initiative piloted by Bristolbased alternative education provider Urban Pursuit and supported by The University of Bristol. The project aims to explore how Science and Technology might be taught and learned in a

real woodland context.

Natural resources were used to solve a range of design and science challenges and students used their new found skills to build a roundhouse.

One Gordano student taking part in the project commented: “I’ve made something from scratch using my own hands from a piece of wood I found on the forest floor. I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved today”.

Neil Dennison, Chief Executive of Urban Pursuit, said: “The Woodland STEM project presents a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn Science and Technology in new ways. The natural forest environment really brings these subjects to life and presents a wealth of relevant and real-life contexts from which to learn.

t the end of June, eight very excited boys and girls from High Down School travelled to Ponds Forge in Sheffield for the National Schools Swimming Finals. The children qualified for the finals after a fantastic performance at Millfield School in Somerset.

The finalists thoroughly enjoyed the day, from travelling up on the ‘team’ minibus to swimming in front of an audience of thousands, including competitors, staff, friends and family.

The boys competed in the mixed stroke relay and the freestyle relay and came 23rd on the day. The girls competed in the freestyle relay and due to their speed and determination they managed to progress to the B final, securing 14th place overall.

Staff at High Down would like to congratulate the youngsters on their fantastic achievement and the rankings attained.

PE Leader, Del Shayler said: “The swimmers and their parents, who put so much into supporting them, should be immensely proud as they are now in the top 0.1% nationally.

Keep it up champs, you are amazing!”

t was a normal Sunday morning training session for the volunteers and on board for her second session on the water was new trainee crew member Emma Berger.

They were working on their navigation skills when a Mayday call came through on the radio. Without a second thought the volunteers snapped into action and before she knew it Emma was on her first official call out.

A yacht had run aground with three people on board by the second Severn crossing. Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) who are based at Chepstow and another yacht in the area were also responding to the Mayday with the RNLI volunteers.

Portishead Lions welcome new President

D

avid Fitzpatrick was presented with his chain of office by Secretary and Past President David Colston. He will serve as President for the 2016-2017 period.

Paying tribute to all those who have worked hard for the club in the past he said that he was looking forward to leading Portishead Lions in giving service to the local community.

He also asked members to join him in meeting the challenge of raising the profile of the club and attracting new and younger people; giving them an opportunity to serve the town with new ideas aimed at meeting the needs of a growing population.

He added that Portishead deserved a good and an active Lions club which would continue to contribute to the life and wellbeing of the town.

he Portishead Rotary Club’s 20th annual Swimathon was held in March at Parish Wharf Pool. The popular event attracted 94 teams and a total of nearly 600 swimmers.

The team behind the Swimathon are delighted to announce that, due to the fantastic efforts of the participants and the wider community, an impressive sum of nearly £15,500 was collected in support of local charities.

This year, the Swimathon’s primary charity is Children’s Hospice South West. Local schools and other youth organisations, including Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Guides, Brownies and Rainbows will also benefit.

Organiser Mollie Young said: “We are so proud of our local community and beyond, who support us year in, year out. We are humbled at the commitment given in raising much needed funds for so many well deserving causes.

“Thank you so much on behalf of all of us at Portishead Rotary and from all those who benefit from your unqualified support.”

Portishead Raft Race and Family Picnic

O

nce again Portishead’s annual Raft Race was heralded a great success. Thousands of people enjoyed the sunshine with many arriving early to enjoy the fair, climbing wall and many other pre-race activities.

As always the event kicked off with the Edible Regatta, where entrants were asked to make a mini raft out of anything edible.

Anything goes and prizes were awarded for the best looking raft in the under 8’s and over 8’s categories as well as the final challenge of ‘best floater’. The Raft Race itself was a spectacle to behold with some fantastic costumes and ingenious raft designs of various levels of buoyancy!

As well as the Raft Race there were also over 40 stall holders set up on the Lake Grounds supplying drinks, food and activities - all with a local flavour. This year the event was supported by QS Solicitors, Lidl, The Butcher’s Block and Mango Design Consultants, as well as Portishead Sailing Club, who were in charge of timings and safety on the Lake, and the RNLI. Dave Passmore and Jon

Bonner did a superb job of compering throughout the day and after the races the crowd watched local bands and enjoyed the produce on offer, with some retiring to watch Wimbledon in the Cricket Club. Local resident Karen Partridge and family summed it up saying: “Thanks for a great family fun day in our fabulous town”.

It is hoped that the day raised thousands for local charities and community groups. A huge thanks to the Raft Race Committee whose effort was rewarded with smiling faces and slightly damp rafters. And of course, well done to everyone who took part and made it such a memorable day.

Community News Girls’ football team pull off outstanding performance at national final

T

he Gordano School U12 girls’ football team have made history by being the first team from the school to reach a national cup final.

A coach full of supporters and staff, together with a large contingent of parents, grandparents and siblings, made the journey to Lilleshall National Sports Centre to watch them play in the final against St Ivo from Huntingdon.

The girls started brightly with a good deal of possession and some slick passing of the ball.

They were rewarded with a fine goal from Katherine Southern to take a 1-0 lead. Only some outstanding saves from the St Ivo goal keeper kept the score at 1-0 going into half time.

Gordano started the second half as they had finished, with Anya Kondru making the scoreline 2-0. A couple of breaks for injury broke the Gordano flow somewhat, including a ball into the face of captain Romia Nash, but grit and determination kept her on the pitch.

Huge cheering and support from the crowd kept the Gordano team going and they threw everything they had at St Ivo, with their keeper making several incredible saves that Joe Hart could only dream of!

But it was not to be and as the final whistle blew the score was 2-3. Everyone at Gordano School is extremely proud of the team. Justin Yau, PE Teacher, commented: “Words literally cannot describe how proud I am of their efforts. They are a credit to our great school.”

Local drama group celebrated at national awards ceremony

ortishead Players scooped a number of highly prestigious awards and nominations at the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) ceremony for productions staged in 2015.

At a black tie event attended by other groups in the South West NODA region, representatives from Portishead Players received the ‘Achievement Award for 2015’: this was based on an assessment of members in NODA’s district nine and endorsed the high standard of all Portishead Players’ shows during the year.

Portishead Players’ creative skills were also acknowledged with the Peter Wheeldon Trophy, given “in recognition of societies that stage totally handmade productions”. During 2015, the group staged Spitfire Girls which was written and directed by long-standing member Colin Astley. The high standards of the society extend to promotional and publicity materials and this was acknowledged with the ‘Standard Programme Award’ for its production of Entertaining Angels.

It has been a great time for Portishead Players as earlier in the year they received an award in the Bristol One Act Festival for the ‘Best Moment in Theatre’ for BoggleBox; a satirical comedy written by Wendy Walmsley and directed by Rich MacPherson.

The new season for Portishead Players will feature a murder mystery in October, a classic Noel Coward play in December, a hilarious pantomime and original fairytale in February and a musical extravaganza in April.

Portishead residents sample French hospitality in Pibrac

M

embers of the Portishead Twinning Association’s newly formed Portishead-Pibrac Link have made their first visit to meet and stay with their French counterparts.

Seven people from the group flew to Toulouse and travelled on to nearby Pibrac.

After a late lunch and a tour of the town, they received a warm welcome from the Mayor and other members of the Town Council.

Julie Hall, leader of the Portishead group, gave a speech in French about Portishead and the plans for future projects together, including sporting and cultural exchanges, and a pen pal scheme between High Down School and L’Ecole de la Salle in Pibrac which should begin in September.

The hosts were presented with a framed picture of Portishead, DVDs provided by Portishead in Bloom and a scrapbook containing current and historical information about the town, including Posset Pieces booklets from the Gordano Civic Society.

The Mayor of Pibrac, Monsieur Bruno Costes then gave a speech in English and presented Julie with the Medaille D’Honneur from the municipality of Pibrac in recognition of the work she has done to get the project off the ground.

During the following days the visitors were treated to a guided tour of the city of Toulouse and the beautifully decorated City Hall. One of the highlights of the trip was Pibrac’s night market where communal tables were laid out on the Esplanade and most of the town turned out to enjoy an evening of eating, drinking and dancing.

A tentative date for a return group trip by the Pibrac Link has been set for May 2017 and it is hoped that many other collaborative projects will begin before then. Many Pibrac associations have already registered an interest in taking part, including theatre, music, football, basketball and martial arts groups and the French equivalent of U3A, an organization for retired people.

Portishead Town Council Newsletter

Y

ou may have seen the brand new outdoor gym equipment installed along the promenade on Esplanade Road. With the permission of North Somerset Council, Portishead Town Council has installed five pieces of outdoor gym equipment. The units have been placed between the benches and no benches or bins have been removed during the installation process.

The project to install outdoor gym equipment has been underway for just over a year.

Advice on the location and the suitability of equipment has been discussed with Carpe Diem Bootcamp who meet at the Lake Grounds, officers from North Somerset Council, and members of the public who belong to the Lake Grounds Play Equipment Campaign Group (LG-PEG).

The units and their installation comply with European Safety Standard BS EN 16630:2015.

This covers ensuring things such as entrapment cannot happen, and that instructions for use, test methods, Health and Safety requirements, marking and safety measures are all in place.

Being designed and made in Britain, the company that manufacture the equipment state that they have complete control over every aspect of the quality of their products.

All pieces have been treated with a marine upgrade and are built to last with long guarantees.

With the National Health Service encouraging us all to take more exercise, the Town Council hopes that people will use the equipment and become more physically active, which will benefit health, wellbeing and quality of life.

South West in Bloom Competition

B

y the time you read this article the judges for the South West in Bloom competition will have visited Portishead and spent the day seeing all the marvellous work that Portishead in Bloom and many other organisations do to make the town such a colourful place for us to all enjoy.

Before the judges visit there is always a flurry of activity from the various volunteer groups.

Some of the groups involved in this year’s preparations include, Pride in Portishead, Portishead Scouts, Lakeside Nursery, Station House Nursery, The Nursery Combe Road, High Down and St. Joseph’s School’s.

The Town Council funds a large proportion of the floral displays and covers the cost of watering the baskets, planters and troughs in the town.

Many people help out at this time of the year, including the retailers in the High Street who agree to have a planter and maintain its watering throughout the summer and the dentist in the High Street who, with the help of Keith Southey, planted flowers along their wall.

On Tuesday 5th July Sainsbury’s Great Place to Work Group busied themselves in the High Street cleaning and touching up the paintwork on the street furniture, amongst other things. A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s said their ethos is to make the community a great place to be in. On behalf of the Town Council we thank the Sainsbury’s Great Place to Work team for all their hard work.

Statutory Town Council Meeting

A

t the 23rd Statutory Town Council meeting the Council elected Councillor Lesley Cottrell as Chairman and Councillor Peter Mitchell as Vice Chairman for the year 2016/2017. Councillor Cottrell said that she is very pleased to be elected Chairman and she regards it as an honour and said that she will do her best in the coming year. She thanked her fellow councillors for their support which she is sure will continue throughout her year in office. Councillor Cottrell went on to say that she has lived in Portishead for only a short time but chose to re-locate to this fantastic town where people have been very welcoming to her. Portishead needs to continue to develop and grow for the benefit of all of us who live, work, do business or visit here. On the Town Council as your elected representatives this is what we aim to do and she will endeavour to work closely with North Somerset Council to achieve the best possible outcomes for the town.

very year Portishead Town Council considers applications from local clubs and organisations for financial assistance.

If your club would like to apply for a grant you will need to fill in a grant application form.

You will be asked to provide details of your organisation, including a full set of accounts for the previous year and an explanation as to why you feel your case should be considered for a grant from the Town Council.

n the lead up to the summer break a group of Year 9 students with particular talents in art photography spent time mentoring Year 4 and 5 pupils from Trinity Primary School on the different techniques involved in optical illusion photography.

Illusion photography requires a great deal of preparation and co-ordination.

With unique composition and light, you can distort reality and create works of art that make objects appear larger or smaller than they really are, confusing the mind and tricking the eye.

The primary school pupils were fully involved in the interactive workshop and produced some fun, creative and compelling images.

Gordano School Art Teacher, Karey Keane said: “I’m so proud of the Year 9 students who guided and supported the Trinity pupils.

“It was a great experience for everyone involved and the primary pupils gained a great deal of hands on photography experience in the time available.”

Assistant Headteacher, Sophie Francis said: “We are so pleased to have hosted this event and are very proud of all the students involved.

“The Year 4 and 5 students were a credit to Trinity and the Year 9 students were extremely impressive in their enthusiasm and energy, demonstrating real leadership skills throughout the afternoon and giving up their own time to prepare.

Community News High Down Junior School teacher selected to attend Parliament’s Teachers’ Institute

B Pupils shine in staging of animated classic

Y

ear 6 pupils from St Peter’s C of E Primary School in Portishead excelled in a recent performance of The Lion King.

Every year the Year 6 leavers put on an end-of-year show and this time it was decided that pupils would perform their own version of award-winning musical The Lion King. The year group went on a trip to see the West End stage version of Disney’s classic and came back inspired and raring to go.

Year 6 teacher Mr Eustace worked with the children to recreate the African savannah on stage. The costumes and staging were really effective and the individual and group performances were supported beautifully by the school’s very capable choir.

Mr Eustace, who used to work for the Bristol Old Vic, was able to bring in some help from the theatre, giving pupils a fantastic opportunity to receive coaching from professionals. More than 600 tickets were sold and it was a fantastic experience for pupils and a great way to round the year off.

Deputy Headteacher Janine Ashman said: “We would like to thank all the Year 6 pupils for their hard work and dedication and wish them a fantastic summer and all the best for the future.”

en Culverhouse, a teacher from High Down Junior School in Portishead, was recently selected from over one hundred applicants to attend the tenth annual Teachers’ Institute in the Houses of Parliament.

In the 10 years since it was launched, Teachers’ Institute has trained more than 500 teachers from all parts of the UK, immersing them in the role, work and history of Parliament.

by Parliament’s Education Service. During the week Ben met with the then Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP, Secretary of State for Education, participated in question and answer sessions with the Speaker and the Lord Speaker, and heard from parliamentarians of all parties in both the Commons and the Lords.

Ben said of the experience: “It was a fascinating and unique insight into the mechanics of Parliament, and it certainly changed my idea of how our Government and democracy works. I am looking forward to sharing this knowledge with my own school and others in North Somerset.”

Portishead Choral Society presents an evening of English choral music

V

isitors to Portishead Choral Society’s ‘An English Summer Serenade’ gathered at the Methodist Church in Portishead on a warm summer evening which was quite in keeping with the theme.

The audience were treated to a diverse, ambitious and well-considered programme featuring opera, sea shanties and ancient English folk songs. Musical director Jonathan Palmer took the opportunity to celebrate this special year of the Queen’s 90th birthday and the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death

by opening with Parry’s England, a fine setting of words from Richard II. This was followed by the celebratory Jubilate Deo by Benjamin Britten.

Later pieces continued this theme with the patriotic Coronation Ode

by Edward Elgar and two choruses from the Fairy Queen, Purcell’s adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Reviewer David Greenhorne noted that a welcome variety in choral tone was achieved at certain points by featuring the ladies and the men as separate groups. He says: “The ladies performed an arrangement of Percy Grainger’s version of the folk song English Country Garden and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Three Little Maids from School, performed with just the right gaiety and lightness of touch. The men sang two sea shanties: A-Roving and Way Haul Away, the latter featuring a number of soloists in the calland-response passages who were impressively robust, bold and clear. In these sea shanties an authentic ‘saltiness’ was provided by the concertina playing of Thom Gorst.”

The programme continued to draw on the English choral tradition of folk song with arrangements by two of its most well known masters: Vaughan Williams and John Rutter, and featuring wind quintet, Harbour Winds.

A small group performed a few examples of madrigals and the evening ended with the 13th century Sumer is Icumen In, which included audience participation and was brought together with great skill by the conductor.

David concludes: “In my experience, choral societies very seldom attempt this scope of work in a single evening. The diversity of music presented here by the Portishead Choral Society was bold and interesting and naturally placed demands on their experience of performance style, but was a stretching they clearly relished.

“One must congratulate the Portishead Choral Society on its continuing adventurousness, and we look forward to seeing which fields they will venture into and explore next.”

Hospice launches new summer party fundraiser

ristol’s only adult hospice has launched a brand new fundraising initiative at a special Summer Party hosted by Miss Bristol International, Gabriella Papp.

Fundraisers, supporters and staff of St Peter’s Hospice gathered at the charity’s Gloucester Road coffee shop, Nonesuch Cup, to officially launch the Summer Party scheme with cakes and mocktails.

St Peter’s Hospice Summer Parties will run throughout July and August with people across the city holding garden parties, BBQs, cocktail soirees or coffee and cake afternoons to raise money for the local cause.

It is hoped that around £35,000 will be raised, which will go towards continuing to fund St Peter’s Hospice Community Nurse Specialists in the city, who offer community visits to patients delivering specialist palliative care, advice and support.

St Peter’s Hospice community fundraiser Petra Littlefair said: “This July or August get together with family and friends and raise vital funds for St Peter’s Hospice.

South West in Bloom judges visit Portishead

O

n Tuesday July 12 the judging for the 2016 South West in Bloom competition took place in Portishead. The judges arrived at the Folk Hall for a presentation by the Portishead in Bloom team which was followed by a threehour tour of the town, taking in all the gardens

and displays that the voluntary organisation plants and tends throughout the year, concluding at Millennium Gardens.

Portishead has entered the South West in Bloom competition for the last 20 years and has been the proud winner of a Gold Award every year since 2008. It is hoped that all the hard work and dedication of the Portishead in Bloom volunteers will once again pay off and the town will retain its title for another year.

But there is no time to rest as this year Portishead also has the honour of being selected to represent the South West in the ‘large towns’ category of the Britain in Bloom competition. The judging for this will take place on August 4 when judges will meet at the Tinca Gallery.

What is flexible working?

There is no limit to the type of arrangements that can be described as ‘flexible’. They could include changes to your hours of work, changing to ‘flexitime’, part-time working, job sharing, compressed hours, annualised hours, term-time working, temporary working, fixedterm contracts or homeworking.

Can I apply for flexible working?

If you are an employee (not an employee shareholder) and have at least 26 weeks’ continuous service, then you have the right to apply. Please note you don’t have the automatic right to work flexibly. You have the right to make the request and to have it considered.

Does it matter that I don’t have children?

It used to be that only people with childcare responsibilities could apply for flexible working. That’s no longer the case. All employees with 26 weeks’ service can apply, no matter what their age, marital status or family circumstances.

Should I mention that I am a carer?

Can my request be rejected?

You don’t need to, but we recommend that you say if you have caring responsibilities, for instance children or elderly persons. This is especially important if you care for a person with a disability.

Quayside festival draws in the crowds P ortishead’s annual Festival on the Quay proved popular once again as people gathered by the waterside to enjoy the music and entertainment, watch the boats and take in the atmosphere.

The majestic Newfoundland rescue dogs from Newfound Friends kicked off the day with a sponsored demonstration in aid of local animal sanctuary Holly Hedge.

Channel Kayaks hit the mark with their Kayak Experience, as visitors enjoyed the chance to get in the water and have a go. There were also bouncy castles, stalls and demonstrations, and the live music continued into the evening.

The event, which is jointly held by Portishead Quays Marina and Hall & Woodhouse, raises funds for RNLI Portishead.

Portishead nurseries lead the way in promoting fresh local produce

akehouse and Stationhouse nurseries have teamed up with The Butchers Block and Shaw’s Fruit and Veg in Portishead High Street for a fresh foodie collaboration.

The venture means that the nurseries are able to support local business while giving the children a valuable insight into the local food industry.

Teaming up with these fantastic local businesses means the children visit the Butchers and Greengrocers, can be more involved in the selection of their food and are able to make the connection between the food they are eating and where it is grown or reared.

The Butcher’s Block sources its meat from local farms so there is further opportunity there for the children to visit the farms and see sustainable and responsible farming in action.

Nursery owner Zoe Parsons said: “We would like to thank Michael Dilloway and Simon Shaw for their outstanding commitment to quality and also for their patience in allowing our children to be so involved. We are incredibly excited about this new partnership and the opportunities it will bring to all our businesses.”

Marathon runner pays a visit to Portishead Lions

T

his year, Portishead resident David Finch ran the London Marathon to raise money for the World Cancer Research Fund UK. While visiting the Portishead Lions to thank them for their donation, David shared his experience with the members, saying that

although he ran the race in a very creditable four hours and 30 minutes he felt that his greatest achievement was raising £2250 for the charity.

He went on to say that the generosity of his supporters was very humbling and inspired him to do his best.

Thanking him for his talk, President David Fitzpatrick spoke of the admiration of the club members for David’s efforts and said that the Lions were always ready to support people like him who were prepared to step forward and make a big effort to help those in need.

The way your property is legally held could impact you or your spouse in later life. Barbara Calcutt, Wills, Trusts and Tax Planning specialist at QualitySolicitors Burroughs Day, explains further.

Joint Tenants

Scenario 2: Second marriages

Most couples own their main residence jointly.

The property would normally be held by them as ‘Joint Tenants’ i.e. both own 100% of the property. If one of the joint owners died, the survivor would automatically own 100% of the property. This is because the property would pass under the survivorship rules and not under the Will (or Intestacy if no Will).

Joint Tenants in Common Two people can also own property jointly as ‘Joint Tenants in Common’. In this case, each party owns 50% (or another agreed percentage from the time of purchase). Because the property is not 100% owned by either party, if one part owner died, the other owner would need to obtain a Grant of Probate of the Will (or Grant of Letters of Administration if no Will).

The Grant of Probate would ensure that the deceased’s share of the property passes according to the terms of their Will or if no Will, under the laws of Intestacy (where the State decides how the estate is divided amongst the family depending on the surviving relatives).

When is it a good idea to sever a joint tenancy?

Some may think it is simpler for the house to pass automatically to the other person in

the event of death. However, there are circumstances where it could be advantageous for both tax purposes and in the event the local council are assessing an individuals’ care fee contributions, to create a ‘Deed of Severance’ for the property.

Scenario 1: Care fee contributions If the survivor of a couple cannot cope on their own they may need residential care. When the local authority assesses the assets of a surviving spouse, their share of the house will be taken into consideration; this could result in the sale of the property so that all proceeds (apart from a fairly low de minimis allowance) contribute towards care costs.

What to do?

If a spouse left their property share in a trust for the other spouse, the capital value of that share will not be considered for care contribution purposes (although potential income from that asset share would be taken into account).

As such, the deceased’s share of the property would be ring fenced and protected for the next set of beneficiaries. Importantly, if the property passes by survivorship, this may not happen.

In the event of a second marriage, spouses often wish to look after each other but also want their bloodline to benefit after the death of their spouse.

What to do?

A share of the first spouse’s property could be protected in a trust so that the surviving spouse can benefit from the income or remain in the property until their death.

‘Joint Tenants’ Property Ownership – a warning None of the above methods are applicable if property ownership is owned as ‘Joint Tenants’.

The remedy would be a ‘Deed of Severance’ and transition to ‘Joint Tenants in Common’. If a Will placing assets into a trust is written at the same time, it will ensure the surviving spouse’s interests are protected as well as protection against care contributions or the property falling out of the bloodline after a second marriage.

Local girl to represent Great Britain in Rio

P

ortishead’s Academy of Gymnastics has announced that their elite senior gymnast Ruby Harrold has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Ruby, 20 grew up in Portishead and formed an early interest in gymnastics when at the age of five she attended the Academy’s recreational classes. Her hard work and dedication has

seen her sporting career go from strength to strength, and she has won medals at the Commonwealth Games and European and world championships.

The selection process for the 2016 Olympics was rigorous and Ruby went through a thorough testing of her physical and mental strength as well as her technical ability. Being selected for the squad is a huge achievement for Ruby, who was also a reserve at the 2012 Olympics in London, and is sure to be the pinnacle of her gymnastics career.

Liz Kincaid, Portishead Academy of Gymnastics’ Head Coach, has also been selected to represent Team GB in Rio and will travel with the team, cementing her reputation globally as an elite and successful Women’s Artistic coach.

Social media is already buzzing with ideas of how local people can show support for Ruby during the games. We would like to congratulate Ruby and Liz on their achievements and wish them the best of luck

Sun shines on annual swimming gala

O

n July 14 children from all five of Portishead’s Junior Schools met for their interschools swimming gala. It was a beautiful morning at Portishead Open Air Pool and the children, organisers and spectators were in good spirits and ready to cheer on their teams.

Nearly 300 swimmers took part across 88 races and the Arthur Grennan cup was awarded to High Down Junior School, who took the well-deserved prize for the fifth year running with a 40 point lead.

Organiser Chrissy Manners said: “It was a great day. It was lots of hard work but once again it was a success due to the dedication of the 30 plus volunteers from the Lido, Portishead Rotary, Clevedon Athletics Club and local swimming clubs.

“There were some incredible races with stand-out performances.

Portishead’s Junior Schools have County, Regional and National qualifying swimmers who swam today but we saw some fantastic swimming from all swimmers who took part.”

Free rugby sessions for girls

G

ordano Rugby Club has a thriving Mini/Junior section but is keen to encourage more girls to get involved.

The club runs teams from U5’s upwards and every Sunday between September and May, it provides rugby coaching to over 350 youngsters from the local community.

The club currently offers girls the opportunity to play in mixed teams up to U12’s, and then to play Girls Only rugby in the U13’s, U15’s and U18’s age groups.

However, from Sunday 4 September 2016, and in addition to the Girls Only teams in the U13’s and U15’s age groups, the club will also offer Girls Only Touch Rugby for girls in school Years 4 – 7. The club also plans to provide girls in the U13 and U15 age groups with the opportunity to play either the Touch or full contact forms of the game.

Touch Rugby or Touch is a fast-growing, minimal contact sport, which emphasises running, agility, passing, catching and communication. There is NO tackling, lineouts, scrumming or kicking involved which can make it particularly appealing to girls of all ages and abilities.

The aim of all these sessions will be to teach the girls the skills required to play the games, but will also focus on being FUN for all, increasing their confidence and encouraging them to make new friends.

Bristol Airport rolls out first phase of terminal extension P

assengers departing from Bristol Airport should enjoy an enhanced experience this summer as the first section of a new £24 million facility is unveiled.

The 9,000 square metre terminal extension features state-of-the-art technology, a significantly enlarged security search area and new security lanes which will deliver a faster, more efficient service to departing passengers.

In total, the new extension will comprise

12 security lanes, including a dedicated Fast Track zone which will go live later this year.

A pre-boarding preparation area will provide a new space for passengers to get their belongings ready for screening, and an automated tray return system with extended conveyor belts will streamline the process through metal detectors, x-rays and security scanners where required.

While the priority of this first phase of development is to address bottlenecks for departing passengers, an enlarged baggage reclaim area, customs facilities, and meet and greet area will be completed by the end of the year, also enhancing the arrivals experience.

Robert Sinclair, Chief Executive Officer at Bristol

Airport, said: “By opening the extension in phases we wanted to make sure passengers travelling during the busy summer holiday get the benefit of this investment. While the extension will not be fully completed until the end of the year, we expect this first phase to deliver immediate improvements for departing passengers.”

Completion of the current extension will then enable the immigration hall to be developed in 2017, with plans including the installation of up to 10 of the latest ePassport gates.

An additional exit lane from the Airport site onto the A38 has also been created, improving the flow of vehicles during busy times.

n Saturday August 6 there will be a family fun day at Portishead Town Football Club to raise funds for Mutende Orphanage in Zambia.

Newfound Friends support Horse World

C

ome along to Portishead Quays Marina on August 14 to see a spectacular show from Newfound Friends’ beautiful Newfoundland Rescue dogs.

The event will see sponsored members of the public jumping into the water to be rescued by one of the 14-stone lifesavers.

All sponsorship money will go to Horse World, a Bristol-based charity which looks after the welfare of mistreated horses, ponies and donkeys, providing medical care, rehabilitation and rehoming.

Newfound Friends has helped to raise over a million pounds for 37 charities over 27 years. This is one of four events in aid of local charities that Newfound Friends are supporting with the help of Portishead Quays Marina this year.

The event will take place by the slipway near the Hall and Woodhouse container building from 10am to 4pm.

es it’s that time of year when Bristol plays host to hundreds of hot air balloons and the locals don’t bat an eyelid at the sight of a giant Minion or FA Cup floating across the city.

Now in its 38th year the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is the biggest event of its kind in Europe. The early morning and evening ascents and night glows are a spectacle to behold and there will be activities on offer throughout the weekend.

New for this year is Bristolian artist Luke Jerram’s ‘Museum of the Moon’ which will feature a giant moon floating over the festival.

Printed with an image of the moon’s surface from NASA, the sculpture will light up at night and comes with its own soundtrack.

The event runs from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th August at Ashton Court. Entry is free but there is a fee for parking.

All dogs are welcome and there will be food and refreshments for their human companions.

The Rock Bottoms

ur aim at Portishead Town Football Club is not only to provide a family friendly club for the local community but also to provide the highest quality entertainment in the area. Following on from the success of last month’s concert by the iconic Steve Gibbons Band this month we welcome The Rock Bottoms.

The Rock Bottoms are made up of Dan Sealey and Adam Barry. Dan joined Ocean Colour Scene in 2003 as a multi-instrumentalist and backing vocalist and played with the band on albums and on their UK, European and Japanese tours. Adam also plays a range of instruments and is a backing vocalist in Merrymouth, a folk/rock trio formed by Ocean Colour Scene vocalist and songwriter Simon Fowler.

Together they will be performing a number of classic hits from the beginnings of rock and roll to the present, as well as songs from bands they have been in, some of their own tunes and maybe even a story or two. They have played at BBC Radio 2’s Carfest and The Moseley Folk Festival and teamed up with Chas Hodges (Chas and Dave), The Proclaimers and multi award-winning musicians John McCusker and Andy Cutting.

ortishead Youth Centre’s Summer Holiday Scheme sees six action packed weeks of activities for children aged eight and over.

It is perfect for working parents or those who want safe and fun activities to entertain their children throughout the school holidays.

Each day is packed with activities, including sports, team games, dance, music, cooking, arts and crafts and team games so there is plenty to get involved in.

Special activities and trips this summer will include the Bristol Balloon Fiesta, Portishead Lake Grounds, Leigh Woods, Marine Lake in Clevedon and Weston beach.

The scheme also works closely with Portbury Nature Reserve to do activities such as pond dipping and mini beast hunting.

The Holiday Scheme runs from 8.30am-5.30pm, Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) and is £17 per day, with possible additional charges for trips, or £9 per half day – 8.30am-1pm or 1pm-5.30pm for £9. Half day options may not be available on trip days.

t SoleLution, we fully appreciate how painful shopping for correctly fitted school shoes can be. Hopefully these tips might help make the whole experience a little less painful.

• Be prepared to wait.

Unfortunately this is our busiest time for children’s shoes. We like to give each family the best service we can and that includes those in the queue ahead of you. First thing in the morning and late-afternoon tend to be quieter.

• Come prepared – don’t forget to bring school socks with you. If you need new ones, we do have them in stock.

• Your child’s feet are likely to grow over the summer holidays, so although we don’t advise leaving it to the last minute, it may not be advisable to buy in the first few days of the holidays.

• No challenge is too great! We stock a wide range of brands, including Start-rite, Angry Angels, Hush Puppies, Ricosta, Geox and Pediped, from a junior size seven to an adult eight for girls and a 10 for boys in most width fittings.

• Ask the child to wear their new shoes around the house to make sure they are comfy, but remember, keep the box and receipt. If you’ve any concerns, come back. We are more than happy to have another check.

• Once everyone is happy, put on some polish and wear them in.

Remember the children’s feet have been in trainers or sandals for six weeks and might not like being back in school shoes straight away.

How do I stop my puppy from jumping up?

T

eaching your puppy not to jump up people is really important, it may seem very cute while they are small, but as they grow they have the potential to knock someone over.

An effective method of training both puppies and older dogs is to ignore their efforts to get your attention when you arrive home and ask all visitors to the house to do the same.

Only praise your dog when they have stopped jumping up and are keeping all 4 paws on the floor, then get down to their level and stroke them.

If your dog starts jumping up while you are stroking them, then stop and ignore them until they have stopped jumping up again.

By doing this consistently your dog will soon learn that they don’t have to jump up at people to get their attention.

fter a sell-out race in 2015, the DB Max Portishead Triathlon returns to the town on Saturday August 13.

The event starts with a 12 length, 400mtr swim in the Portishead Open Air Pool. Then after a short run to transition, which is situated on Battery Point, participants will set out on a 25k bike course.

Open Garden to raise money for charity

T

he Dairy in Weston-in-Gordano will be open to the public later this month as part of the National Gardens Scheme.

The one acre garden lies within a larger area

managed for wildlife and enjoys extensive views over the Gordano Valley. The north courtyard is planted for winter interest and the one to the south is a summer garden.

A less formal lower garden contains a large pond and the planting peaks in midsummer, continuing into autumn. A separate fruit and vegetable garden is protected from the neighbours - roe deer and rabbits!

The garden is open on Saturday August 13 and Sunday August 14 from 2-5pm. Admission is £4 and children go free. Refreshments will be available.

s part of the Fire Kills ‘Plan a Safe Escape’ campaign, Avon Fire and Rescue Service (AF&RS) is asking people to clear the clutter that may be blocking escape routes.

Working smoke alarms are usually the heroes in a fire, giving people the warning they need to get out of their home safely in the event of a fire. rs te However blocked exits, locked doors or t u unfamiliar surroundings can add vital seconds to their escape time.

Sh d AF&RS has made a video to demonstrate how important it is to plan o your escape route and why smoke alarms could help you to escape wo d r more quickly.

Ha AF&RS Group Manager Matt Peskett said: “Having working smoke alarms and knowing the escape plan in an emergency could make all the difference.

“Just two to three breaths of toxic smoke could leave you unconscious, so every second counts when escaping a fire.

“Make sure you’re always prepared, your exits are clear and everyone knows what to do if the worst should happen.”

Here are some simple steps to help keep you and your loved ones safe: 1. Think about how you’d all get out in case of a fire. Making an escape plan and practising it will help ensure that everyone can get out, stay out and call 999.

2. Fit at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home so smoke can reach the alarms quicker giving you more warning time.

3. Test your smoke alarms monthly. Smoke alarms can save your life, but only if they work.

4. Clear your escape routes. Make sure you’re able to escape without tripping over to ensure a speedy exit.

Computer Virus Alert (Locky Virus) by

T

he last few weeks have seen a massive increase in a type of virus known as ransomware. This virus will delete all of your files, documents, pictures, videos, music and there is no way to recover them. For business owners that store all their records on their computer this could be catastrophic.

Please do not underestimate this threat, it is normally delivered by an email, you will probably have seen these emails already, they arrive in your inbox saying that you have an outstanding bill, or maybe a parcel to collect and they include an attachment, it is this attachment that contains the virus.

Once your computer is infected the virus goes through all of your files encrypting them with an unbreakable code, and then leaves you a message telling you how to pay a ransom to get the files back. Let

me be clear, those who have paid the ransom do not get their files back, instead they get a few back and then are asked for more money to do the rest, this is a scam and you must not be tempted to pay them.

The bad news is that this means all of your important files are lost, forever; there is no chance of getting them back. So in the face of such a threat what should you do?

The first course of action is to take preventative measures, so you really need to take a backup of all your important files. The good news is that you can purchase an external drive for about £50 that will backup all of your data. It is however important to disconnect the backup drive between uses because if you get this virus and the drive is connected it will wipe your backup as well.

The second thing is to ensure that you have decent anti-virus software installed. I am asked time and time again what constitutes decent anti virus software, and the answer is always the same. If it is free then it isn’t good enough to protect against the most modern threats. If you want proper protection it will cost, the best recommendation I can give is to use a product that keeps winning industry awards.

Personally I use Bullguard Internet Security which has recently won the Which Best Buy Award 2016 and has been consistently winning awards for the last few years. I am thinking about making my July payment on account for my income tax bill on credit card. Are there any problems with that?

A:

No, but there are a few things you need to be aware of. As it is for income tax/ self assessment, make sure you use your 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference followed by the letter ‘K’ as your payment reference.

There’s also a fee if you pay HMRC by credit card that isn’t refundable. This applies whatever the tax is that you’re paying.

HMRC have changed the fees for using a credit card from 1st April 2016.

These replace the former 1.5% fee.

The new rates vary depending on the type of card used and whether the card is a personal or corporate card.

As you can see, the fees for paying using personal credit cards have been reduced and the rates for corporate credit cards have increased.
