Our first edition of 2019 is a cracking one.

We’ve gone for an inspirational feel to this month’s magazine to ease you in to making positive changes for the coming year. Whether you are looking for a new challenge or fancy dropping an old habit, hopefully you will find some encouraging stories to give you that little extra push. So stick the kettle on, put your feet up and let us fill you in with what’s going on locally this January.

Nailsea Festival of Music reports exceptional performances, preparations for the Skate Park Festival continue, a local volunteer wins an award and organisations benefit from fantastic fundraising efforts. NAILSEA FESTIVAL OF MUSIC SEES ‘EXCEPTIONAL’ PERFORMANCES Nailsea held its first Festival of Music on November 16th 2006, a year after four local residents noted the dearth of music events in the town. Initially, the Festival was held mainly at the Methodist Church, with some classes also in Christ Church. Over a decade on, the popular Festival is now held at Nailsea School with various classes for artistic performance.

The 2018 Festival recorded entries in 90 classes. These were in Singing, Choirs, Piano and Speech and Drama. 372 individuals entered and a total of 482 performances were given over the course of the day. A panel of expert adjudicators judged the performances. Rebecca Thompson BA (Hons), LLAM appraised the Creative Writing and Speech and Drama classes. Rebecca is also an adjudicator for The British and International Federation of Festivals and The Rose Bowl Amateur Awards. Ann Newson LRAM, DipRAM also judged in the Speech and Drama classes. In the Piano and Music Composition classes, Ailsa Howarth BA, PGCA judged the entrants. Ailsa studied at the Royal Academy of Music, Oslo University and the University of East Anglia and she has been teaching the piano for almost 30 years. Andrea Calladine ARCM, ABSM, FISM, Maria Jagusz GRNCM and Penelope Price Jones BSc, ARAM, LRAM, PGCA adjudicated over the Singing classes.

The highest marks awarded during the Festival were in the Speech and Drama category. Olivia Gerardi and Florence Zikking received a score of 95 for their 9 and 10 years: drama duologue. Daniel Shorrock was awarded two scores of 90 in the 9 and 10 years: solo drama and 9 years: solo verse about ‘History’ categories. These three scores indicated exceptional performance, both technically and artistically.

There were also 49 performances which gained marks of 87 to 89 which indicated performances of distinction.

The 2019 Festival will take place on November 23rd.

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF CLEVEDON BRING CHEER TO RESIDENTS This year the Inner Wheel Club of Clevedon managed to collect a bumper crop of goodies, full of festive cheer, for the residents of Andrew House Christmas Hamper.

The club members took great pleasure in packing up the boxes and delivering them. Tina and Anita, along with two of the residents gave members a warm welcome with cups of tea all round. The gifts were well received and will no doubt be thoroughly enjoyed.

news NORTH SOMERSET COUNCIL LEADER OPENS NAILSEA PUBLIC FORUM Leader of North Somerset Council, Councillor Nigel Ashton, opened the latest public forum in Nailsea, hosted by Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens.

On Tuesday December 4th residents packed into the auditorium at Nailsea School to hear from Cllr Ashton, PCC Sue Mountstevens, Chief Constable Andy Marsh and local Chief Inspector Leanne Pook. Local residents were given the opportunity to have their say on policing issues as they were invited to ask their questions.

Those who attended put questions to the PCC, Chief Constable and Chief Inspector. Topics raised included road safety, Community Speedwatch, the importance of volunteers including Special Constables and improvements in technology in policing.

Speaking after the forum PCC Sue Mountstevens: “It’s important for the Chief Constable and I to have these meaningful discussions about policing with local people to ensure we know what residents care about and what is and sometimes what is not working for them in their local area. It’s clear that residents who take the time to attend our public forums care about their communities and want to make a positive change. The local policing issues that they raised have been well and truly heard. Thank you to those who attended our forum and for taking the time to listen to the Chief Constable and I.” The next public forum will be in East Bristol at 7pm on March 7th 2019. The venue will be announced in the New Year.

news COUNCIL CALLS FOR PUBLIC HELP TO PUT NORTH SOMERSET ON THE MAP North Somerset residents are needed to help build a fuller picture of local history for a new historical database. Know Your Place is a free online historical map system that allows users to discover and compare periods of history. Working with Historic England, the Great Weston Heritage Action Zone, local community groups, volunteers and libraries, North Somerset Council has digitised and transcribed hundreds of historic maps and documents onto Know Your Place, creating a resource for those interested in the history of North Somerset.

Councillor Elfan Ap Rees, Deputy Leader of North Somerset Council said: “Know Your Place is a fantastic tool that highlights historic changes in the landscape of North Somerset at key points in history. We have hundreds of entries that have been loaded up over the last two years, but to build a rich and diverse community map of local heritage, we need more information and more volunteers to add to it.”

Cat Lodge and Kate Hudson-McAulay, North Somerset Council’s Archaeologist and Conservation and Heritage Officer, (pictured to the right), said: “We’ve spent time showing local community groups how to use Know Your Place to help their research into the history of their areas and have learned some new information ourselves.

Know Your Place North Somerset also includes information on all the archaeological and historical sites across the district and although we’ve discovered a huge amount of information, there’s more to be found. We hope that more residents will share the heritage that is important to them on the community layer and start adding their history onto this valuable tool.”

Know Your Place, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, is an ambitious online mapping project that overlays maps from various periods of history, allowing users to compare how streets or areas look today alongside maps from the past. Cara MacMahon, Heritage Action Zone Project Officer, said: “If you’re trying to think of fun activities over the holidays, spending time looking at the maps and information on Know Your Place, and even uploading pictures and information about what is important to you in your local area, is a great way to occupy a few hours. news PREPARATIONS PROGRESSING FOR NAILSEA COMMUNITY SKATE PARK FESTIVAL 17th annual festival to take place in june Organisers of the ever popular Nailsea Community Skate Park Festival have confirmed next year’s date, which celebrates the 17th occasion of the Skate Park Festival. Held at the traditional venue of the Millennium Park in Nailsea, the annual event will take place on Saturday June 15th 2019 from 1pm to 5pm.

Initial progress has already been made with plans for the day, as well as the action on the recently rebuilt Skate Park, and will include skateboard, scooter and BMX competitions. There will be numerous stalls and activities to participate in, and of course, plenty to eat and drink. As with any event such as this, the organisers are really keen to increase the size of the team as the event grows. If you have enjoyed the new skate park and would like to give something back, get in touch with Phil Williams, the Festival Director, by email on phil@christiansurfers.co.uk.

There will, as in previous years, be the opportunity for organisations to have a stall showcasing their activities in Nailsea and the surrounding area. Forms will be sent out to previous stallholders in January

2019. If, however, you would like to receive a form in advance or have not been involved before, email Festival Director Phil.

The Skate Park Festival runs purely from local funding donations and takings on the day itself, both of which the organisers are extremely grateful for. If you are interested in becoming an official sponsor or would like to find out more details of the opportunities that exist, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team. The organisers are currently also looking for a potential sponsor for a generator for the 2019 event.

The team wish to extend thanks to all those already involved in the planning of

ROTARY SPONSORED SALVATION ARMY CONCERT RAISES ‘WONDERFUL’AMOUNT The annual Salvation Army Carol Concert, sponsored by Rotary, Nailsea and Backwell, took place at the Nailsea Methodist Church on Sunday December 2nd. The year 2018 represented a landmark for the Rotary as it marked the 25th year that the concert has been staged. The theme for 2018 was ‘A Christmas Celebration’.

Despite the somewhat inclement weather, local people turned out for this free event which included the usual festive mix led by the band, the choir and the timbrells. The congregation participated

enthusiastically with the carols and it was apparent that they also enjoyed the Christmas-themed sketch. This year, the collection was in favour of the local branch of Wellspring Counselling service and the cheque in the sum of £565 was presented by Ken Rock, Community Chairman of Rotary Nailsea and Backwell to Sarah Rees, Director of Wellspring locally. Sarah, who had earlier outlined the vital work of Wellspring, was, in her own words “flabbergasted at the wonderful amount raised”. As usual, a good time was had by all and the congregation left with smiles on their faces and goodwill in their hearts!

MEMBER GARRY GIVES HIS 30TH PRESENTATION TO PROBUS CLUB OF NAILSEA At a recent meeting of the Probus Club of Nailsea, Garry Gowans gave a very interesting talk about the Roman Army conquest of the South of England after their invasion of Britain in AD43. This was his 30th presentation to the Club. Garry Gowans has been a member of the Probus Club of Nailsea for over 20 years and during that time has given 30 talks to Nailsea Probus members and a total of 317 to other Probus Clubs and organisations in the Bristol and North Somerset areas.

The subject of Garry’s talks range from Ancient Greek and Roman History to World Wars One and Two. The fee for each talk goes to charity and these have included Macular Society, Nailsea Young Carers, animal charities, World Vision (children) and a charity supporting Ghurka veterans. Two talks in particular elicit a very emotional response from the audience. Those relating to the Christmas Truce of 1914 and Armistice Day 1918, when the guns finally stopped. They also invariably raise many questions.

For Garry, the talk which gives him the most pleasure is the one relating to Cave Art discovered in south west France.

news FLEET OF GRITTERS NAMED BY LOCAL RESIDENTS PREPARED FOR FREEZING WEATHER A new fleet of gritters are ready for action across North Somerset as part of the winter maintenance programme. The six gritters, which have been named after local places by residents, are on standby round the clock to treat roads and keep the area moving.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, deputy leader and executive member with responsibility for highways, said: “It’s nice to inject a sense of humour with the naming of the gritters, but once autumn arrives, our highways staff are on duty 24-hours-a day – including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day – to monitor weather conditions and let the gritter crews know when they’re needed. Our six gritter lorries are on round-the-clock standby and can be called out to grit main routes with just two hours’ notice. Our new fleet of gritters have been leased for five-years and now

NAILSEA DISTRICT LEG CLUB TREASURER RECIEVES AWARD Nailsea District Leg Club passed on their congratulations to Val Smith, NDLC treasurer, who recently received a ‘Highly Commended Volunteer’ award from the Ellie Lindsay Foundation.

The Club expressed their joy at the award and their gratitude for the role that she undertakes: “We’re very proud of her, and the work she does for NDLC is greatly appreciated.”

Since Ellie Lindsay OBE started the first Leg Club in 2004, there are now 35 clubs nationwide plus more around the world. The holistic approach to members who have leg problems is paramount and very much part of the ethos of Leg Clubs. However, this is even more important where diabetes is involved – an illness, which in its various forms and related issues including leg ulcers, is predicted to become an increasing expenditure for the NHS relating to future care and treatments. Nailsea District Leg Club wish to highlight the savings that could be made if the number of cases of diabetes, including leg problems, could be cut.

NEW SUPPORT GROUP FOR THOSE WITH POLYMYALGIA RHEUMATICA Do you have or do you know of anyone who has the condition Polymyalgia Rheumatica or Giant cell arteritis and would benefit from additional support?

BACKWELL CAMERA CLUB JANUARY EVENTS It is a busy month for Backwell Camera Club with no less than five meets taking place. On Thursday January 3rd, the club will hold an internal knock-out print competition for The Darwen Trophy.

Members’ prints will be pitched against each other with the audience voting for the winner. Clive Dodd presents ‘Wildlife and Streetlife’ on January 10th. Clive, a club photographer, will share some of the wildlife, landscape, travel, and street photographs that he has taken in recent years. On January 17th a presentation will be given by John Chamberlin FRPS titled ‘Near and Far’ in which he will show a selection of images from the UK and around the world. January 24th sees ‘Reconsidering The Banal’- an approach to photographing the overlooked and poetry of the everyday. To finish up the month, ‘Subverting The Everyday Through Photography’ will be presented by Tony

Make 2019 the best year yet for independent retailers by spending your pounds locally.

I love a British town High Street, even more so now after six years spent living abroad. For me, it is the enticing stretch of shop fronts, every one individual and designed with thought and attention.

You never know what you might find behind each door and whose day you may make with a simple purchase. I love the community spirit that pours out during special holidays and I admire the hard work and dedication that is required to keep a small, independent business alive. The undeniable passion that traders and owners have for their few square metres of retail heaven is the glue that binds a High Street, and often a community, together.

But without customers, we will lose these social and economic hubs that make a town special. Where will stressed parents meet for a much-needed caffeine hit?

Where will carnival parades and Christmas markets find a home? What will bring curious visitors and vibrant new business to a town?

The High Street symbolises much more than just somewhere to pop out to when you need a stamp or a spare key cut. It requires more thought than just a panicked dash when you’ve forgotten a relatives birthday. Using the High Street must become part of our daily existence, like making a cup of tea or scrolling through social media. It needs to be our go to destination for everyday items and for special occasions. It should be the first place we look and not a last thought when we’re desperate and run out of ideas.

It is, of course, easy to say and a lot harder to do. Time is precious and online buying is often quick and pain free. We can do it all times of the day and night: on the train on the way home from work, over breakfast and when the weather is miserable and we just want to stay warm and dry. Internet shopping has its obvious advantages.

However, there are a number of wonderful perks associated with shopping locally that you just don’t get from surfing the net. See our top three below.

The government made reference to the difficulties faced by local retailers and High

Streets up and down the country with a Policy paper published in October by HM Treasury. Titled ‘Our Plan for the high street: Budget 2018 brief’, the paper includes a business rates discount and a Future High Streets Fund in recognition of the impact of “changing consumer behaviour”. From April 2019, the government has pledged to cut business rates by a third for two years for up to 90% of retail properties. A £675 million Future High Streets fund will invest in improvements and aid in the evolution of town centres of the future.

What the paper from HM Treasury highlights is that there are manifold reasons for why High Street retailers are struggling. High rents, the cost of business rates, local council cuts and a consumer base that has altered the way that it shops have all conspired to make running a local, independent outlet a difficult task. Whilst we can’t directly affect all these factors, what we do hold is purchasing power. All you have to do is use it for good in 2019.

Inspiration is neatly arranged on shelves and hangers and you may be pleasantly surprised to find exactly what you weren’t looking for.

Not sure when you should start receiving your State Pension? Head to www. gov.uk/state-pension-age and use the handy online calculator. Consider taking advantage of a free will review to discuss with a legal expert your options for Power of Attorney and how to avoid any unnecessary fees and taxes.

If you are keen to boost your health and wellbeing but don’t know where to start, consider popping into your local pharmacy for advice. Alternatively, there are numerous active community groups and gyms that offer classes and support to older people who wish to get fit and socialise.

Never an easy conversation is the one of home.

Do you stay living where you are? Futureproof? Or do you move somewhere that offers greater support and specialist care? This difficult decision can be eased with a little knowledge. Research the options available to you: visit retirement properties, speak to your local council, chat with family and friends. Seek out expert advice that will allow you to make a safe, informed decisions about how and where to live in older age. It’s never too early to plan.

HOW TO TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF MAKING RESOLUTIONS

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT JANUARY? EXCITED? APPREHENSIVE? DOWN RIGHT TERRIFIED?

Perhaps, for you, the first day of the new year will symbolise the first day of your new life? Or maybe it looms in front of you like a wagging finger, an omen of all the promises made but not kept? The truth is, however you view the last breaths of 2018, it is likely that the term ‘resolution’ will play a defining role in the fresh-faced arrival of 2019.

Don’t feel bad, we all do it. Whilst some merely ponder on the changes they want to make, others go full steam ahead and commit their future successes to paper.

This list is stuck to the fridge, a permanent reminder of what you have promised yourself to achieve. Now, no-one is saying you shouldn’t set goals that place you out of your comfort zone but are these demands that we place on ourselves in the depths of winter good for us? Or do they just lead to extra stress?

In order to ensure that the resolutions you make this year are achievable, enjoyable and, ultimately, life-changing in a positive way, we have compiled a brief guide on how to take the pressure off your pledges.

SET REALISTIC GOALS It is understandable that you start the year full of determination to lose weight or change your career but unrealistic expectations are so often the reason that resolutions fail. Saying that you will run a marathon by the end of the year is a clear and powerful goal but ask yourself if you really have the time and energy to devote to it? If you have a busy life with job and children, can you realistically achieve the level of training required to go from casual

jogger to 26-mile endurance event?

Instead, break these ideas into bite sized chunks. Start with the ultimate goal and work backwards until you have a monthly, achievable focus. If its a marathon and you’ve never run before, then keep it simple: walk more often, slowly picking up the pace to short jogging bursts.

Build up your endurance and remember to enjoy the feeling of getting fitter and faster. There will always be marathons to run in the future but for now, keep the resolution creeping forward from week to week where you can keep it in your grasp. If its a promotion you are after then set yourself tasks to widen your horizons and create new opportunities for yourself.

Take an online course, speak with your HR department, get advice on your CV, have a coffee with someone in the position or area you wish to move into. All these small, positive steps will eventually enable you to climb that mountain.

DON’T DO IT ALONE Camaraderie and support from professionals is a key ingredient in making those resolutions last the distance. No man is an island so why go it alone? Ask family or friends if they want to come in with you to reach a common goal. See if there is someone in the world of social media who wants to buddy up. If you are hoping to quit cigarettes for example, then access help from your local stop smoking service.

Take advantage of the excellent range of free and paid support groups available.

We can all benefit from that additional boost to our self-confidence and a regular reminder that we can achieve great things.

FACTOR IN (A SLICE OF) FAILURE This may sound negative but in fact this is what will keep you on track. It will take the pressure off and allow you to forge forward accepting that you are human and not a machine. Saying that you will cut all junk food from your diet is admirable but be mindful that there will be occasions when life doesn’t quite fit in with this goal. There will be blips. Recognise them for what they are then move on. If you fail 10% of the time, let it go. What you’ve actually managed is a 90% success rate.

REWARD YOURSELF We create reward charts for children, sticking on gold stars and promising a treat if they do well. But as adults, we have no-one to do this for us. So, start rewarding yourself. It doesn’t have to be grand or expensive, just something that makes you feel good about having moved on to the next level of your resolution. A friend who was trying to loose weight had her partner write words of encouragement on small scraps of paper. Every time she reached a goal, she took one from the jar and read it. Have these rewards planned in as an extra lift to your spirits when you’ve done good.

Ultimately, resolutions are about change for the better, however big or small, and change doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient and kind to yourself because eventually small steps add up to giant leaps. And the man who spoke those great words, walked on the moon.

NEW YEAR VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

The new year is the perfect time for new resolutions and new challenges – so why not make time to volunteer in 2019?

The Samaritans of Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset are looking for more people to help boost their team. They need “listeners” who are on the end of the phone taking calls from people who are often at their lowest ebb.

The branch is part of a national charity which offers emotional support for those struggling to cope and is one of over 200 branches of the Samaritans in the UK. It is open around the clock. As well as taking over 14,000 calls last year, local volunteers also answered almost 3,000 emails and 700 texts.

Branch director Joe said: “We are always busy and desperately need new volunteers to join us. The number of calls we receive is increasing and without more volunteers there is a danger that calls could go unanswered and this is unacceptable. We are asking members of the local community to sign up to support those who may not have anywhere else to turn. If you have just a few hours a week to spare then we would love to hear from you.”

And if listening is not for you there are plenty of other volunteering opportunities – help with fundraising is always needed.

Regular information mornings are held at the charity’s Weston-super-Mare branch in the town’s High Street. The next one is on Saturday January 12th running from 10am to 12 noon and this will be followed by a February event on Saturday 9th. PLAN AHEAD FOR THE NEW GARDENING YEAR

By Elly West It’s a quiet time in the garden this month as most plants lie dormant in cold, frozen soil. The days are short and we’re looking out at bare stems, fallen leaves and the odd static evergreen. But January is a time of new beginnings and it’s a great time to plan ahead and assess what’s working and what isn’t, so you can enjoy an even better year in your garden for 2019. January is after all named for Janus, the Roman god of doorways and beginnings, usually depicted with two faces – one looking forwards to the future and one looking back.

So stay warm indoors and plan ahead. Make some notes, draw diagrams, make lists. Think of new plants you would like to try and scribble down ideas from a gardening programme, magazine or book. It’s the perfect time to take a critical look at the bones of your garden. As a designer, my work is all about getting the outline right and the fun bit is filling in the gaps with plants. But while colour schemes can be changed relatively easily, the layout of the garden is crucial for a design that works, and it’s while the plants are quiet that you can really see the structure. Make changes now and you’ll be ready to plant in spring.

And if you’re desperate for some colour, winter is a time when it can really have some impact. PLANT OF THE MONTH Sweet box, Sarcococca confusa, finds its way into many of my planting schemes as it’s such a versatile, easy-going evergreen that provides structure in winter and grows well in most conditions. It doesn’t mind that trickiest of gardening positions – dry shade – and has the added bonus of gorgeously sweet smelling flowers in winter, plus attractive black berries, like shiny jewels clustered along the stems. It’s slow growing and makes a good alternative to regular box, Buxus sempervirens, as it’s not susceptible to blight.
