Young photographer competition finds two worthy winners

Community Christmas Fair

T

he community came out in force on December 1 to enjoy the Nailsea Community Christmas Fair and the organising committee can once again be proud of a wonderful event.

There was plenty going on, with Crown Glass Shopping Centre mascot Honeysuckle switching on the Christmas tree lights.

The crowds were treated to some top entertainment on a big stage at Somerset Square by the We Love Nailsea choir, Nailsea School musicians, singers, dancers, actors and panto performers.

Youngsters took part in a lantern parade under the arches at Somerset Square with lanterns they had made out of recycled plastic bottles and cut-off festive stickers at craft sessions held leading up to the Fair. Children could also follow the sparkly footprints and signposts made by Nailsea Shedders where they found Santa’s Grotto at Clevedon Walk.

Other attractions on the night included the big skate rink at Crown Glass Place, walkabout clowns and balloon seller, donkeys dressed as reindeer and nearly 30 shops and businesses stayed open late.

ach year the Rotary Club of Great Britain and Ireland organises a series of competitions in schools, one of which aims to find the Young Photographer of the Year.

There are three levels of entry; Junior, Intermediate (age 11 – 13) and Senior (age 14 – 17).

The theme this year was ‘A Different Perspective’ and the task was to produce three photographs on the theme and each entrant had to provide a brief sentence explaining what each photo represented in relation to that theme.

A number of entries were received from Nailsea School and the winners in the Intermediate and

Senior categories were Shaza Lee (age 13) and Rose Jones (14) respectively.

The judges, Rotarians Roy Ackrill and Bob Keightley and Peter Holt of Backwell Camera Club were impressed by the extremely high standard of entry and Shaza and Rose were eventually declared worthy winners.

They each receive a certificate and a £25 token presented by Rotary President Chris Bales and they now progress to the Rotary District heat involving entries via some 60 Rotary clubs. If successful there, they would take part in the National final.

Rotary Club presents money raised from Charity Walk

L

ocal charities, clubs and community organisations benefitted from almost £22,000 which was raised from the highly successful Nailsea Charity Walks and Runs, which is organised by Rotary, Nailsea and Backwell. Last month cheques were presented to three such organisations.

Rotary, Nailsea and Backwell President, Chris Bales, presented £1,195 to Alchemy Trampoline and DMC club and £874.44 to the Nailsea Leg Club.

Alchemy’s Jon Webb said: “Nailsea Charity Walks is a great way for our members and supporters of all ages to get together, have fun, and raise funds for us.

“This year we will use the funds towards a new Olympic standard trampoline so all of our teams can benefit from the higher standard equipment.”

Leg Club Chair, Carole Brook, said: “The strong support that Rotary, Nailsea and Backwell has

provided to the Leg Club since its inception has been very important to us.

Support from Rotary and other organisations enabled the club to get off the ground and now help it to be a real success story. The funds raised will help to defray the cost of running the club, currently about £5,000 per year.

Rotary’s Pete Hoare also presented Nailsea Air Cadets with a cheque for £621. The Air Cadets have been involved with the Walks for many years, using the event to raise money for equipment.

Rotary, Nailsea and Backwell would like to thank local people for their generous support of the event with particular thanks to those also taking part.

Nailsea Charity Walks and Runs is an important fundraiser for many local charities and community groups. In excess of £100,000 has been raised since the event started five

years ago and the 2018 walk will take place on Sunday, June 10 so make sure the date is in your diary.

Rotarian Graham Hunt said: “In 2017 the all new routes were widely praised. In response to popular demand, the 2018 routes are likely to be the same or similar.

“So why not come along, join in, enjoy the local countryside and have fun with family, friends and other participants whilst raising essential funds for your favourite local charity or good cause?”

News Start 2018 at The Meeting Point

Students’ ideas take flight

Y

ear 9 and 10 Backwell School students with an interest in engineering, mathematics and science took part in a thrilling one day Aviation Project.

The Aviation Day, which took place in the Sixth Form Centre, was run by a group of volunteer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) specialists and aerospace engineer ambassadors.

Students spent the day designing and building model test gliders and powered radio-controlled model aeroplanes.

Working in teams, the brief was to design an aeroplane which would maximise lift and speed. Test flights were then done using miniature radio controlled flight units.

Not only was the theory of aerodynamics put into practice but confidence also soared as presentation skills were practiced before the exciting day concluded with the students staging an

evening Air Show presentation to their parents which included demonstrations of their finished aeroplanes.

Recognition for “Best in Show” went to Heather Forster, Fleur Cooper, Emma Buffery, Niamh Short and Harry Knight, whose bird-inspired plane certainly looked like it would challenge the laws of gravity.

When the time came to compete in the final encounter their creation flew fast, high and smoothly despite being the biggest and heaviest machine on the day.

he Meeting Point in the Parish Hall, Station Road, Backwell, starts the year with a home-made soup lunch on Tuesday, January 2 at 1pm.

If the children are looking for something creative to do after too much Christmas TV, there’ll be help on hand from 10am-noon on January 2, and a plaster model to take home.

The next two-course home-cooked lunch will take place on Tuesday, January 16 at 1pm and booking must be made by Tuesday, January 9.

Children are welcome and can eat for free.

The chair yoga, organised by WECIL, will help you get back into shape after Christmas on Tuesday, January 2 and Tuesday, January 9 from 11am-12.30pm.

Another new group will be joining The Meeting Point every second Tuesday from January. Barbara Paige’s knitting group, Knitting for Others, will be there from 2pm on Tuesday, January 9 and would love you to bring your needles, and perhaps some wool.

Nailsea Lions plan for a brighter spring

N

ailsea Lions have continued their annual bulb planting to make the town brighter in the spring.

This year the hardworking Lions planted more than 500 daffodil bulbs along Mizzymead Road, near the junction with Queens Road, in Nailsea.

For the past few years, the Lions have planted daffodil bulbs along the roadsides and on open spaces around the town, providing splashes of colour in the spring.

On behalf of the Lions, Pam Hunt said they were proud to help improve the appearance of the town.

Over the years, the bulbs planted previously multiply and the displays get better.

In total, the Lions have now planted well over five thousand bulbs in various areas of the town, making beautiful displays in March and April.

National athletics honour for former teacher

A

former Nailsea School teacher has been honoured by the England Schools Athletic Association with a Lifetime Achievement award for his work in schools athletics.

Dave Turner, who has worked at Nailsea School as a PE teacher for 37 years, received the award at the association’s AGM in Birmingham.

The award records his dedication and involvement in all levels of schools athletics cross country, track and field, sports hall and combined events athletics since 1967.

The award is from his colleagues on the ESAA committee in recognition of his dedication to encourage, motivate and train young people in athletics.

Dave is a qualified coach, starter and qualified track and field official, as well as team manager to a wide variety of athletics teams.

News

His interest stems from personal experience as a competitor in Welsh athletics and in English Schools Championships as a youngster as well as a long distinguished Rugby career, which included playing for an England XV against Portugal in the 80s.

He spent much of his childhood in Clevedon where he was a student at St. Andrews Junior School before moving onto Nailsea Grammar School and representing Somerset Schools at English schools championships with a second and third place being the highlight, as well as honours in Welsh Games including a second place in the Welsh Senior Long jump.

Dave is currently working with individual schools, local authorities and National Athletic groups to promote the sport.

Shedders point way at Christmas Fair

T

he Nailsea Social Shedders got into the Christmas spirit by making 12 bespoke Santa grotto signs for the successful Nailsea Community Christmas Fair. Youngsters were able to follow the signposts to find Santa’s Grotto at Clevedon Walk.

The Nailsea Social Shedders are a local community group that runs two projects – a repair café and an allotment.

The Repair Café opens every Tuesday from 1-4pm in the Hannah More Scout Hut, Hannah More Road, Nailsea.

Students take part in

Takeover Challenge

E

ight students from Nailsea School took part in a national Takeover Challenge 2017 by getting involved in the work of Healthwatch North Somerset and the Tyntesfield Medical Group.

The Takeover day saw the students, from across years 11 and 12, have the opportunity to work with the charity and the local GP surgery in Nailsea.

They had the chance to involve themselves in decision-making, share their views on priorities for health and social care and get a fresh, unique and creative perspective on important local health and social care issues.

The students also took over Healthwatch North Somerset’s communications and engagement roles, getting an insight into how they seek and use feedback about local services.

They also got involved inside Tower House GP Surgery, observing how their work informs services and how NHS staff work alongside patients.

This year is the tenth anniversary of the Takeover Challenge, originally launched in 2007 by the Children’s Commissioner’s Office as a fun, imaginative and exciting activity to encourage organisations across England to open their doors to children and young people to take over adult roles.

In previous years a huge range of organisations and individuals from classroom teachers to senior politicians and TV celebrities have taken part in this inspirational and fun event.

Hundreds of schools have been taken over by pupils and many creative partnerships have developed between schools and local organisations.

Rotary raises money for Children’s Hospice South West

A

t a recent meeting of Rotary, Nailsea and Backwell, the President, Chris Bales, presented a cheque for £2,000 to Viv Shorney, representing Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

These funds were part of the proceeds from last summer’s Rotary Charity Golf Day and Viv thanked the club and stressed that the Hospice relies very heavily on fundraising initiatives by local organisations to move a step nearer to covering their huge annual financial commitment.

New pilot gig club

A

new pilot gig rowing club is set to launch in Portishead and it is hoped that those interested in what is becoming a popular sport will get involved and join.

Holly Lertxundi Willis and four other experienced gigrowers, including Debbie Green, Rachel Ball and Tanya Saker, decided to set up the Portishead Pilot Gig Club in May and their mission is to introduce the competitive, social and exciting world of gig rowing to the growing community in and around the town.

Holly said: “Rowing is a sport that many can get involved in and it not only comes with great health benefits but also brings a fantastic social life and a nice sense of community spirit.”

Cornish pilot gig racing is one of the fastest growing water sports in the South West, with 70 clubs, including one in Clevedon, and more than 8000 active gig rowers competing throughout the year at rowing regattas along the UK’s coastline, with them all gathering at the annual World Pilot Gig Rowing Championships in the Isles of

Scilly every May. Gig boats are 32 feet, wooden, six oared rowing boats, traditionally used for pilotage, harbour work and as lifeboats.

The club is currently in the early stages of setting up but has already received a warm welcome from the community, with interest rates reaching high numbers already.

Money raised for Hospice at Male Voice Choir Concert

P

ortishead Rotary Club donated £750 to St. Peter’s Hospice at Brentry after raising the money at a very successful Avon and Somerset Police Constabulary Male Voice Choir Concert in November at the Methodist Church Hall, Portishead.

St. Peter’s Hospice at Brentry is undergoing a massive redevelopment costing a total of £6.5 million pounds.

It will provide personal care and support of the highest standard for those in the last stages of their lives.

The funds from the Rotary Club are to help them towards achieving their target, and Rotary President John MBE said: “We were delighted to help and support St. Peter’s in their amazing project, the new Hospice will provide essential personal care for those in the last days of their lives. We wish them every success .”

Plans for £1m road scheme for Portishead approved

P

lans to relieve congestion and reduce journey times for traffic travelling into Portishead have moved a step closer after North Somerset Council’s Executive approved in principle a £1m road improvement scheme in the town.

Earlier this year, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling announced a national congestion relief programme. In the South West, £2.8m was allocated to the improvements around junction 19 of the M5 for Portishead.

Since the funding announcement, council engineers have been working with Highways England to investigate options for relieving congestion for traffic heading into Portishead during the evening rush hour.

Alongside improvements to be carried out at junction 19 by Highways England, changes are also planned for the A369 Wyndham Way leading into Portishead.

The proposed scheme would see Wyndham Way widened between the Sheepway and ‘sail’ roundabouts to create a second lane for traffic heading into the town, increasing the capacity for Portishead-bound traffic. The outbound road leaving the town would remain as a single carriageway.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, deputy leader and executive member with responsibility for highways, said: “We’ve been working with Highways England to examine how congestion in the area during evening rush hour could be alleviated. As well as the obvious frustrations and delays this congestion causes to motorists, it also poses a road safety issue as stationary traffic stacks up on the southbound M5.

“Our investigations have shown that congestion on the motorway is partly due to limited capacity on the A369 Wyndham Way. Together we’ve identified improvements which will reduce congestion, cut journey times into Portishead and improve safety on the motorway.”

Highways England will be responsible for carrying out works to junction 19 while North Somerset Council will be responsible for the improvements on Wyndham Way. The cost of the proposed Wyndham Way scheme is an estimated £1m which will come from the congestion relief programme funding.

Following approval from the Executive, engineers are now working on finalising the design for the scheme.

he Vibe Pop/Rock Choir capped a brilliant term by raising a wonderful £1,300 for local charity Springboard Opportunity Group through ticket sales and donations from their Christmas concert.

The sell-out concert, which took place at Somerset Hall, Portishead, sold 260 tickets in the space of one week.

Springboard is a fantastic local charity that supports children with special needs and

their families and choir leader Catherine Smith said: “It is a charity very close to the hearts of choir members, especially Rebecca Stitfall - a young lady with Downs Syndrome who sings with Vibe and who attended Springboard sessions when she was younger.

“Rebecca invited her friend Rebecca to the stage during our performance and they led the choir in singing Fix You by Coldplay by signing along beautifully in Makaton, which is a simplified version of sign language. It was a really special moment in our concert.”

Vibe Pop/Rock Choir was set up by local choir leaders Catherine and Wendy Sergeant in January 2017.

The choir is fast paced and fun, singing excellent a cappella arrangements of pop and rock songs. We have about 80 members of all ages. Rehearsals are relaxed and fun.

Many members have told us how uplifting the rehearsals are and how much better they feel after them.

Unmarried couples - what are your rights if you separate?

When an unmarried couple separates they are often surprised to hear that unless they have dependent children together, any financial claims they may have against each other (if any) are often limited to claims against the family home. Family solicitor Jennifer Pollock looks at the rights of unmarried couples when their relationship breaks down and the legal aspects of sharing a property.

Unfortunately, couples that live together often fail to record their intentions in respect of the ownership of a property at the time of purchase, which can cause problems when a relationship ends.

Solicitors are usually involved when a couple are unable to resolve a disagreement as to what each person’s share of a jointly owned property should be, or to agree whether one person has acquired financial interest in a property owned by the other.

These types of disputes are dealt with in a very different way than if the couple were married, with the law concentrating strictly on what the legal position is regarding the ownership of the property between the former couple rather than what is fair.

Jointly owned property If a couple have purchased the family home in joint names, unless they have signed a declaration of trust setting out how the property is to be owned between them or recorded this in the Transfer Deed, the starting point will usually be that the couple intended the property to be owned equally.

Sometimes one person will claim that they should have a larger share in the

property than their co-owner perhaps due to a larger contribution to the purchase price or work they did to the property. In the absence of a written agreement the party seeking a larger share will need to be able to prove that the parties jointly intended for the shares to be unequal and provide evidence to show what that share should be.

Property in one person’s sole name Where an unmarried couple have lived together in a property purchased in the sole name of one of the parties, unless there is a declaration of trust in place, the party claiming an interest in the property would need to show that the intention was for them to share in the ownership of the property, even if the property was not legally held in their joint names. They will need to provide evidence of this for example by recounting conversations between the parties about ownership, or evidence of their behaviour, for example a contribution towards the purchase price. They will also need to show that they acted to their detriment in reliance on this intention (this will usually be quite clear where a financial contribution has been made).

What can be done to protect couples when they purchase a property together?

It is very important that couples obtain proper legal advice at the point that their property is purchased, especially if they are contributing different amounts to the deposit or one party has a family member making a financial contribution. Their solicitor will then be able to advise them the best way to record this agreement and protect their contributions. A declaration of trust can also be drawn up during the parties’ relationship if their intentions change or one person makes an additional significant contribution, for example paying off the mortgage or paying for an extension.

Brass band celebrates 40 years

A

North Somerset brass band celebrated its 40th year as a group with their annual Christmas Concert at St Mary’s Church, Portbury.

Bold Brass was originally formed in 1977 as a quintet and the larger ensemble was created later to play for just one concert, which was so successful the group decided to stay together.

The group has provided music for the Open University award ceremonies in Torquay and Cheltenham for more

than 15 years and for many years been an essential part of the Bristol Evening Post Carol Concert in the Colston Hall.

The players have many years experience playing in brass bands, jazz and big bands and their repertoire is drawn from classical jazz, big band and popular brass music.

Many of their arrangements have been made especially for the group by past and present members and musical directors.

ae Kwon-Do students from North Somerset had a cracking end to 2017 at the last competition of the year.

Ten students who train with the TAGB Tae Kwon-Do Club at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre and Portishead Primary School are celebrating their success at this year’s British National Championships, which was held at the prestigious Birmingham Arena (NIA).

There were more than 1500 competitors taking part, with

Nicola Bright - 2nd Sparring international teams travelling from the Netherlands, Poland and the US, and the Portishead students were over the moon with their performances.

Medal Winners included Rose Cherian, who won a 1st in Sparring, Ali Sellars, who also won a 1st in Sparring, Nicola Bright, who won a 2nd in Sparring, Jason Bright, who won a 3rd in Sparring, and Phoebe Delafaille, who won a 3rd in Tag Team Sparring.

Ab Attack The New Year is the perfect time to get into shape. Every month top personal trainer and owner of @thegym, Nailsea, Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym professor, provides advice for those who work out.

O

f late, having found myself back on the gym floor, @theGym #Nailsea, I’ve been asked more and more questions and asked for alternative exercises.

This week alone, I’ve found myself demonstrating two abdominal exercises that the participants had never heard of, let alone performed. So, why not share these with your good selves...

First up, the Pullover and Pass. I always liked this one in a sporting environment, particularly football drills. In essence, a sit-up where you perform a Pullover with a football or medicine ball, leading into a Sit-Up. At the top of the movement, bounce the ball off a wall (here we use our Crazy Catch) or pass it to a partner.

The Pullover element is a great way to ensure you stretch the abdominal wall, retain control over the abdominals, and your hand and ball-position serve to increase the difficulty, compared to a regular Sit-Up. As a by-product, it’s also a good strength and conditioning crossover for throw-ins and goalkeeping.

Next up, Frog Sit-Ups. “What?” I hear you ask.

This is another Gironda classic (you will have heard me mention this name before!).

Recognising that the more powerful hip flexors dominate a Sit-Up, a Frog Sit-Up is an exercise to remove the hip flexors from the exercise and place the emphasis on the abdominal wall. Not particularly popular, and near forgotten these days, as it’s tough!

So, when asked by three young lads for a different ab exercise and answering my question “how many sit-ups can you do? Hundreds?” with “Yes, hundreds.”. I demonstrated the Frog Sit-Up and asked them to aim for 10 reps. In a bemused reply, “10 reps?” they said.

Needless to say, they found it tough, but loved it. So, how do you perform Frog Sit-Ups? Assume your normal Sit-Up position on the floor (you’d better not have your feet secured!).

Now, draw your knees outward, keeping your feet together (or, crossing your legs) and your knees as low as possible; this removes your hip flexors from the equation.

Next, roll your back up, keeping the small of your back against the floor and bring your chin to your chest...kind of a hybrid between a Sit-Up and a Crunch. If your knees come in during the exercise, you’re bringing your hip flexors into play, meaning your abs are far less

powerful than you thought.

Nailsea School Hub given Westminster approval

ear 7 students in Nailsea School’s new Hub were excited to welcome Dr Liam Fox MP and present him with letters they had written about how well they have settled in to their new school.

The Hub’s inclusive provision offers an alternative curriculum and support to students who may find the transition to secondary school more challenging than others.

Miss Baldwin, Assistant Headteacher, said: “Substantial planning and effort has gone in to the development of The Hub. Staff are passionate about this new venture and its positive

“Students were delighted to meet Dr Fox and always relish the opportunity to take the lead and demonstrate what they value about the school.”

School Presidents together with Griffin House Head Boy and Girl led Dr Fox on a tour of the whole School during which Dr Fox remarked on the impressive facilities and how the design of the school enhances learning.

Student Leaders took the opportunity to talk to Dr Fox about issues affecting education and gave their opinions on the consequences of changes to funding.

Students were also keen to explain to Dr Fox how visibly the school has improved under the leadership of the new Headteacher, Mrs Elliott.

Nailsea’s improvement year on year is reflected in the rising numbers of students applying to the school and last summer’s record breaking exam results.

Dr Liam Fox MP said that he was delighted to meet the students in the hub and enjoyed talking with them about their school.

He added that he was very impressed by the maturity of the students throughout the school and their enthusiastic approach to their studies.

ear 4 pupils from Backwell Junior School paid a visit to Backwell Playing Fields as part of a topic on their own neighbourhood.

Both year 4 classes, 4J and 4CW, alongside class teachers Rebecca Jones, Sharon Curtis and Jane Withers, were met at their local park

Exciting 2018 after Skatepark open meeting

he 24th annual Salvation Army concert, sponsored by Rotary, Nailsea and Backwell, had a theme this year of ‘The Message of Christmas’ which was graphically illustrated by the Salvation Army Captain, Michael Dean and his family in the form of an on-going sketch.

The message was supplemented by the enthusiastic involvement of the band, the choir and the timbrells with audience participation in the carols.

The collection this year was in aid of the Nailsea Disability

Initiative and a grand total of £590.50 was raised. The cheque was presented by Rotary President Chris Bales to Chris Sumter representing the charity.

Having given a comprehensive outline of the charity’s work in dispensing advice to disabled people and helping them claim their due benefits, Chris Sumter thanked the congregation for their generosity.

A good time was had by all and the congregation departed with smiles on their faces and goodwill in their hearts.

ighteen months after the official opening of the new Nailsea Skatepark, Nailsea Skatepark Project, Nailsea Town Council, and the local community police partnered together to hold an open meeting for all users, parents and guardians and other interested community individuals at 65 High Street (previously the Youth House).

A good mix from the Council, Police, Community, NSP representatives as well as skate park users gathered for a really constructive 90 min meeting, celebrating what has been achieved, and the history behind the new skate park as well as looking toward 2018 and beyond.

Among other things discussion points centred around the very successful Skatepark festival, which next year will be held on June 9, 2018, Skate School (scheduled for Spring/Summer 2018) the fences surrounding the park, situating of the benches, additional litter bins, the new youth shelter and the current CCTV coverage.

Phil Williams said: “It was very worthwhile to get input from the youngsters who use the park every day, and all parties believed it was a very well worthwhile exercise and one that we hope to replicate in early spring.

“Everybody agreed that working together we can eradicate any small issues of antisocial behaviour, in order to reassure the skate park remains a very welcoming community space for every age group as it has been since opening.

“We are very much looking forward to an exciting 2018. And we would like to thank those that played a part in helping to raise funds for the skate park, and a special mention to the great working relationship with Nailsea Town Council for their ongoing support and of course the police and community workers for helping to ensure that the park is an area that we can all enjoy.”

ailsea library needs a second volunteer to get a Code Club up and running at the venue to help teach children to code.

Successful Code Clubs are already running at Portishead and Worle libraries, and children at other libraries across the district would also like to attend Code Clubs, if there are enough volunteers.

Code Clubs are regular fun sessions for children aged 8-11 to learn how to create simple digital animations and computer games.

They use ready-made step-by-step projects created by Code Club UK using programming tools such as Scratch, Python and HTML. You don’t need to be an experienced computer programmer to learn to code – our existing volunteers have taught themselves, and the Code Club organisation offers lots of help and tips.

Coding is now on the primary national curriculum and the library clubs offer opportunities for children to practise this skill.

If you think you might like to help children with learning to code, there will be an informal information and taster session at Clevedon library on Wednesday, January 17 at 1.30pm. eing a White Van Man is a lot of fun as you get to spend all day with your mates, laughing at each other and telling stories.

I remember a good laugh I had back in 2009. I used to own a fruit and flower business at Temple Meads Station and I had a new starter called Dave who, when not selling flowers, was often messing about on his phone. Curiously I asked what he was doing?

He said, “I’m buying Bitcoins”.

“Bitcoins, what are they?” I asked, trying to keep a straight face.

“Well it’s hard to explain, it’s kind of like an online currency that some unidentified clever person created that you can’t hold and you can’t buy anything with but one day I believe it will completely change the way we do business with each other a bit like how email changed the way we communicate,” he said somewhat arrogantly.

“So, let me get this straight you’re spending your hard-earned money buying a virtual currency which is costing you £8.21 per Bitcoin, it does not exist, it’s not backed by any commodity its unregulated and no one has heard of it, are you mad?” I said.

Me and the other guys laughed about this quite a lot, it just seemed so ridiculous, after about a year Dave stopped coming to work and life moved on and I forgot about him and Bitcoins.

Fast forward to today and I found Davey on Facebook and he now lives in Saigon and is a multimillionaire! Each of those Bitcoins he bought for £8.21 in 2009 is now worth an eye-watering £8458 and changing by the minute.

So I thought I needed to give it a go, and downloaded the Coinbase

app from the Android Playstore and set it up and started buying Bitcoins (well very very, very small fractions of Bitcoins).

It’s unlike any other investment the prices can fluctuate by 10 per cent up and down on a near-daily basis.

It makes what might be quite an ordinary day into a nail-biting virtual rollercoaster ride of ups and downs.

This is my first experience in investing and I’m getting used to people who aren’t in saying, “It’s a bubble get out.” or “It’s the currency of drug dealers and money launderers.”

I stop and think well the same is true for cash and well it might be a bubble, but I find it exciting and believe if it moves mainstream then the bubble could inflate much, much bigger!

Being a Bitcoin investor is one thing but trying to explain the workings of a cryptocurrency to my wife presented a much bigger problem. I hardly got past the first syllable when her face changed from a look of let’s grab a glass of wine to let me introduce you to the spare room.

hen the garden lies dormant, there is still beauty to be found in the dead and dying, so if you are looking for year-round interest, always think about what a plant looks like as it dies back.

Many flop into a soggy heap, and these should be cleared away to keep the garden tidy and help prevent pests and diseases.

But there are others that gracefully give way to crisp seed heads that can often last right through until spring.

There are plenty of flowering perennials that more than earn their keep after the blooms have faded. Honesty is more often grown for the seed heads than the flowers.

The blooms are un-noteworthy, but the seed heads light up the winter border with their luminous, paper-thin, pennylike discs. Phlomis russeliana is another plant that I prefer after the flowers have died, the seed heads creating a distinctive tiered effect like balls on a stick.

This style of gardening, leaving plants standing, is a trend that suits low-maintenance gardeners, as well as those who want to do their bit for wildlife.

Not only will your garden look good, but it will provide much needed food and shelter for birds and small mammals in the colder months.
