Community News Editors Note Spring is well and truly here and it’s the perfect time to get out and about in Nailsea. Those with green fingers will be out in their gardens, so our Home and Garden section is a great place to start for some handy tips and ideas. Nailsea and District Horticultural Society’s Spring Show is on at Nailsea School this month too. The arts take centre stage in Nailsea and the surrounding towns too, with North Somerset Arts Week taking place. There are plenty of things to do to get you out of the house this Spring, including a lovely walk around Portishead.

The summer event takes place on Thursday, July 4 at Mendip Springs Golf Club, and the main contest is 18 hole with additional competitions and team prizes as well as a Rotary Charity Draw. Entry fee is £160 per team of four players, and this includes coffee on arrival and buffet meal throughout the day. All money raised will go towards the purchase of equipment for the Care Unit which will help to save precious lives. For full details and an entry form contact Howard Walton on 01275 463405 or Eric Crawford on 01275 855396. It has been a busy time for Rotary Club members. Last month they ran a bookstall in Nailsea where the public could donate books and buy them for charity. Next week the Club is visiting the BBC in Bristol where they will learn how the media actually works. No doubt some of their members will get the opportunity to show off their acting skills.

Spring flower show open to enter

here are still places at the Nailsea and District Horticultural Society Spring Show, which takes place on Saturday, April 6 in the atrium of Nailsea School. There are classes for almost everyone, including art, cooking, wine, photos, floral art, handicrafts and houseplants as well as flowers and veg. There are also separate classes for children. Last year’s show saw 700 entries and the Society can cater for a lot more this year.

The daffodil display is the best in the area and forms part of a nationally recognised competition. It’s cheap and easy to enter with just a hint of friendly rivalry. Those interested can collect a free schedule, which includes full details of how to enter, from PS Travel, Nailsea Library, the Garden Shop or the Council offices. For those who would just like to see the displays, entry to the show, which opens at 12.30pm, is £1. As well as examining the exhibits, visitors will be able to have a look at the craft stalls, check out the bargain books and CDs and purchase homemade refreshments until the prize giving, which takes place at 5pm.

Reassuringly tasty, nutritious and dependable. Now that’s a recipe for an easier life.

If you have any enquiries, contact the show secretaries Jane Knight on 01275 855342 or Martyn Davis on 01275 855563.

Community News Pupils and parents get hands on Out of Town at Nailsea School eople of all ages braved the cold weather to experience a ‘Hands on’ Technology event at Nailsea School.

Hannah Simms and Charlie Hogg, and Year 10 students Beth McNaughton and Chloe Parsons were recipients of the unique trophies.

BRITANNIA WINDOWS.co.uk

The event built on the success of last year’s interactive evening with children bopping along to a silent disco, playing giant games, designing computerised bridges and trying out archery with Gordano Valley Archers. Fashion fans were well catered for, with a competition to design an outfit for the future and fashion shows were held throughout the evening by textiles students modelling their outfits made on the theme of film characters. Headteacher David New said: “It was wonderful to see parents, grandparents and children from Nailsea School and local primary schools working together to solve technology problems either hands on or virtually on computers. There was a real sense of occasion. “Thank you to the Technology Faculty for a fun and educational evening for all ages.”

wo Bristol City footballers performed a turf cutting ceremony at Ravenswood School in Nailsea to celebrate a new building project worth nearly half a million pounds. Marvin Elliott and Liam Fontaine cut the turf at the special school in Pound Lane to celebrate the start of a building project which

will see three new classrooms being built at a cost of £450,000 as part of a major refurbishment. They were assisted by pupil Ben, aged 14, who won a school drawing competition with his design on how the new classrooms should look. Pupils also had the chance to learn some new football skills with a football session from Bristol City coaches. Head teacher Philippa Clark said:

“It was a great day and the pupils really enjoyed it. The players were great. “The development is very exciting and will give us the extra space and modern facilities we need.” There will be a topping out ceremony when work is completed in May and an official opening by North Somerset MP Liam Fox is planned for mid July. Ravenswood has 110 pupils aged between 4 and 19, and Kier Construction will build the class rooms.

Community News Squadron returns to new home

T

he cadets and staff of 2467 (Nailsea) Air Cadet Squadron have returned home to their new squadron on the playing fields at Greenfield Crescent. Building work began just under a year ago on the old hut which had been their home for the previous 39 years. The centre will see a new era dawn for the Air Cadets in Nailsea as they take on their new home in their 40th anniversary year, which will be celebrated later in the year. The new building was built by EG Carter and Co. Construction of Gloucester and this is the first project of this kind they have undertaken. Within the compound is a 25 metre training theatre as well as the new cadet centre building which is

managed by Wessex Reserve Forces and Cadets Association. Using the latest techniques and materials, it is hoped this will be a home for the cadets well in to the 21st Century, providing them with many opportunities to expand and grow. The new building is hoped to be officially opened later this year. The Air Cadets have been using Golden Valley Primary School for the last few months whilst they have been waiting for the rebuild to be completed which has proved to be a good resource and home for the Squadron.

2467 (Nailsea) Air Cadet Squadron parades on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7–9.30pm and is open to boys and girls from the age of 13-17. Please contact the Officer Commanding, John Radford, on 07889 183080 or oc.2467@ aircadets.org for more information. All are welcome.

esidents in Nailsea have been giving feedback on a new Sites and Policies Development Plan by North Somerset Council. The plan has been drafted by the council to make decisions about where new housing and jobs will be located and where and when new facilities and infrastructure, such as schools and roads, will be built.

Ms Mountstevens, who was elected in November, recently spoke with Nailsea residents in the precinct for two hours as part of a consultation period on the Police and Crime Plan. During her first 100 days she has appointed a new Chief Constable, frozen the policing part of the council tax, committed to seven Police and Crime Plans, opened recruitment for a volunteer complaints panel and started work on a Business Crime Forum. Reflecting on her start she said:

“I knew the role would be interesting and varied but it is a privilege to be Avon and Somerset’s first Police and Crime Commissioner. It carries great responsibilities but I promise I will do the job to the best of my ability.”

Community News Backwell cyclist raises £1,711 in solo ride

A

Backwell resident and keen cyclist has raised £1,711 for the British Red Cross and Operation Smile by completing a solo cycle ride from John O’Groats to Lands End. Mike Wood covered 950 miles in 10 days, cycling for around eight hours a day while carrying all his own kit too. After completing the challenge Mike said: “It was a great ride and I loved it. Sure, it was very challenging but also very enjoyable and the positive factors far outweigh the negatives. Would I do it again? I think I probably would.” Georgie Davies, a local Red Cross fundraiser, added: “The sponsorship money raised by Mike will go towards the work of the Red Cross in Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire. This will

help with a whole range of services for local people, such as a transport service to help people get to vital medical appointments, an emergency support service, as well as first aid training courses.

Out of Town Portishead artist gets jigsaw of winning painting

F

or artist Bryan Evans, having a piece of his work in every house is the dream. Thanks to a local stationers it could be about to become reality. If not hanging on the wall then laid on the coffee table at least. Bryan, of Portishead, won last year’s painting competition, run by businesses Pure Offices and Associates, to produce a piece of railway poster art for the town. Morgan Westley’s on Portishead High Street have produced a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle of the image in support of the ongoing campaign to reopen the Portishead to Temple Meads line in April 2017. The competition was a collaboration with rail enthusiast and author Dr Richard Furnace, and Bryan’s image will also appear in volume 7 of the Poster to Poster series of definitive books on railway poster art. Bryan said: “Portishead is one of the few towns that doesn’t have its own railway poster – both Clevedon and Weston did - which is how the competition came about. “I saw the advertisement and thought I would enter. I hadn’t painted for

five years and the challenge from my point of view was to create something original and avoid the conventional approach so I decided to use a montage.” The image depicts the new Portishead, with the Marina and the new railway at its core, but there are a number of glimpses of the town’s past in there too, as well as the link with Temple Meads and Bristol. The image also depicts the letter P if you look hard enough. Bryan feels his passion for railways helped him, and said: “My father worked on the railways and was a signal box man in Doncaster in the 60s; we actually lived in a station house. His father was a steam engine

driver too, so the railways are in my blood. “I am a member of the Portishead Railway Group and I’m glad the poster has made a contribution to their campaign and I hope it can bring more people on board.” A proportion of the proceeds from every puzzle sold will go towards supporting Portishead Railway Group. Bryan, who moved to Portishead in 1986, is starting on his next project soon, which will be a series of paintings about Portishead that comment on how the town has changed and grown.

Students donate to lifeboat

S

ixth form students from Gordano School have donated a massive £1,700 to the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat.

The students, who raised over £3,400 during their 2012 Rag week, recently presented cheques to the Lifeboat Trust and to CIRCA, the Crohn’s in Childhood Research Association. Lifeboat crew member Dave Herbert (pictured) said: “We can’t thank the students enough for showing us their support and nominating us as one of the two charities they raised money for during their raising and giving week.” Rag week involved students dressing in whacky costumes all week for all of the events they organised, which included a rag fair, concert and a quiz.

Community group nominated for Queens Award

levedon community group Clevedon Pride has been nominated for a prestigious award to recognise the hard work it has put into improving the town centre. The volunteer organisation is in the running for a Queens Award for Voluntary Service, an annual award for outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others in the community, improving the quality of life and opportunity for others and providing an outstanding service. Nominations are assessed by a regional committee before being passed to a national committee for final selection and recommendation to The Queen. Chairman Jo Lea-Jones was interviewed about Clevedon Pride’s work by John Laycock, deputy Lord Lieutenant of Somerset and they have been highly recommended. She said: “Clevedon Pride has only been going for five years so the fact we have been nominated for such a

prestigious award is fantastic. “It is the highest recognition a volunteer organisation can receive for its work so it’s quite an achievement to be nominated and get past the first phase. “It came out of the blue which was nice. Julia Elton proposed us and Clevedon town councillor Carole Wring filled out the nomination.” Details of the winners are announced on June 2, the anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation. Winning groups receive a certificate signed by The Queen and a commemorative piece of crystal. Since being formed, Clevedon Pride have helped with the regeneration of Queens Square in the town centre through tidying, while also getting young offenders involved and maintaining the memorial garden. The group also raise money for the square’s annual Christmas lights

display, which was switched on last year by Daphne Fowler of BBC quiz show Eggheads, and this year they are looking to expand them. They are also planning a ‘Music in the Square’ event this summer for the town, which will be a six week programme for young performers. Ms Lea-Jones added: “We now have a new stage cover tent and PA system for outdoor events thanks to a grant from Clevedon Town Council.”

Lion still roaring after 45 years Clevedon Lions Club Members recently met and presented Lion GRAY BLOXHAM with a certificate of appreciation and an engraved Glass Tankard in recognition of a magnificent achievement of 45 years of dedicated service to the community and being the sole serving founder member. With a few friends he founded the Club in l968 and during then and until now has served in many offices and had responsibilities both within the Club and the Zone.

These include Club President five times, Zone Chairman Three Times, Regional Chairman Twice, Deputy District Governor, and he also built up Lions Leo Clubs for young people where he was District Chairman for three years. He has been honoured with the prestigious Melvyn Jones Fellowship and the Bert Mason Humanitarian awards for outstanding commitment and could fill a book with the friends and places he has been during his Lions involvement.

Youth

Young drummers and vocalists needed for Summer Concert

T

he Rock Project sessions in Clevedon are on the lookout for budding young bass guitarists to join the group as they start to prepare for their summer concert in July. Andy Collins, who runs The Rock Project, said: “We have bass guitar spaces available for 12-18 year olds that either already play or who wish to learn.” The two-hour weekly sessions are a unique and social way of learning guitar, bass guitar, drums and vocals with a one hour professional lesson followed by an hour of jamming

together as a group. Recently the senior group have been learning and playing songs from bands such as The Wombats, Nirvana, Blink 182, Blur, Amy Winehouse and also the Friends theme by The Rembrandts. If you are interested please contact Andy on 01275 265226, bristol@therockproject.com, or visit www. therockproject.com.

Education Red Maids’ School brings fun to outdoor education

P

upils at The Red Maids’ Junior School are looking forward to an action-packed summer thanks to their well-established outdoor education programme. All the girls take part in day or residential trips between April and July, the costs of which are all included in the basic school fees. Mrs Gillian Rowcliffe, headteacher of the junior school, said: “The girls love all our outdoor education and often think they are just having fun but we know it’s also providing invaluable learning both physically and mentally. “This is a key part of the Red Maids’ teaching philosophy throughout the whole school.

“Outdoor education helps develop a can-do attitude that enables our students to do whatever they put their minds to, including achieving their best academically.”

The school celebrated World Book Day with the Headmistress as Cruella de Ville and the staff as her dalmations as well as Red Nose Day, where the children spent the day doing various bizarre activities to raise money.

Fairfield has also achieved high standards academically. Year 6 pupils sat entrance exams for senior schools and were all offered a place at their chosen one.

Year 5 children spent a Medieval Day at school with a visit from a real Knight, while pupils spoke, sang and performed for the rest of the school and family and friends at three year assemblies.

Following on from this they enjoyed another maths challenge, many successful sporting achievements through football, netball, hockey, swimming and cross country, and the regional finals of the North Somerset Sports Hall Athletics.

This was followed by outstanding

The play was first seen at the Lyric Theatre in London in 1983, starring Judy Dench and Michael Williams which received excellent reviews. Tickets are £10 and available from Valerie and Dennis Smart on 01275 857866.

Where to Walk

Walking in Portishead By Michael Watts of the Portishead Strollers.

T

his is an easy walk of approximately 3½ miles. It is flat and mainly on paths or pavements, but there are some areas which can be wet and/or muddy – mainly along the coast and across the nature reserve, so please wear appropriate footwear. Even if you are familiar with Portishead there might be some places you have not seen before. The walk starts and finishes at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre but because it is circular you can join it anywhere, which is useful if you live somewhere along the route. Assuming you start at Parish Wharf, walk towards the marina and follow the quayside until you reach the lock gates. Cross the water and turn left so that you are walking towards the Severn Crossing. Follow the footpath passing the large red sculpture Ship to Shore by Jon Buck. Keep on the same path and walk past Full Fathom Five by Michael Dan Archer. Continue walking on the same footpath keeping the sea on your left. You will pass an ingenious sculpture which is part of a series by Jason Lane fabricated from engineering “bits and pieces”. When you come to the last house turn inland into Wren Gardens.

Cross Fieldfare Avenue and enter The Finches. When you come to a house which has a rowing boat in its garden turn left and enter Robin Place. You should soon have some lovely open views across the nature reserve to your left. Take the left hand fork towards a flight of steps. Descend and turn left. Walk across the wooden boardwalk and keep walking until you reach a kissing gate. Go through the gate and walk towards Sheepway. Turn right onto the road and cross over the railway bridge but be careful – there is no footpath! Walk along Sheepway for about 800 metres until you reach a bus stop. Turn sharp right into The Vale immediately after the bus stop. Continue along this footpath until you come to an arch giving access to an oval grassed area. Walk around the oval and continue to walk in as straight a line as you can – keeping on footpaths all the time.

Go across Lambourn Way and follow the footpath through to Tydeman Road. Cross the road and keep going until you pass a circular grassed area. Keep on this footpath as it meanders through the houses eventually emerging on Mulberry Avenue. Slightly to your left and ahead of you will be Galingale Way which will give you access onto Quays Avenue. Turn right into Quays Avenue and walk up to the roundabout. Turn left into Harbour Road and return to your starting point at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre. Why not consider joining your local health walk group in Nailsea for a regular walk with a sociable group? The walks are scheduled every Monday at 11am and start from Grove Sports Centre or Scotch Horn Leisure Centre. Walks will be both 30 and 60 minutes in length and no dogs are allowed. To discuss the walks programme please call Sport and Active Lifestyles on 01275 882730

Food & Drink Become a wine expert

Food for Thought

M

ost of us like to think of ourselves as wine connoisseurs in some shape or form, whether we are out at a restaurant or hosting a party for friends. The trouble is, half the time we don’t really know what we’re talking about. You can’t just drink a bottle of wine each weekend and expect to breeze your way through a conversation with someone who actually knows there stuff on the subject.

A

recent survey has found that the lunch break is under threat with 54% of office workers regularly spending it at their desks. Most of us grab a pre-packaged sandwich or salad and eat what we believe to be a relatively healthy lunch at our desk. Many pre-prepared lunch foods are packed with hidden fat, calories, salt

and sugar. You may think a chicken wrap is a healthy option but you could be consuming as much as 500 calories and up to 18g of salt during your lunch break. The recommended daily salt intake for adults is just 6g, meaning you could eat as much as three times your daily allowance in one pre-packaged sandwich.

It’s all about examining the colour, giving it a swirl around the glass to release the aromas, smelling and tasting the wine to take in all its flavours. If you want to know your Pinot Gris from your Pinot Grigio and impress your friends in the process, then Waitrose in Nailsea is offering you the chance. The supermarket is now offering local clubs and organisations within the community a free opportunity to improve their knowledge of wines courtesy of Waitrose wine specialist Eric Condell, along with complimentary cheeses to savour from the deli counter, provided by Nicola Malcolm. Wine tasting sessions will be organised by Eric with a maximum of 12 in a group. Interested parties are to contact Eric or Nicola directly in branch at Nailsea via the welcome desk at front of store.

April is also a month with many seasonal foods and ingredients and it’s a great time to use some of them in your cooking.

hen an owner gets a pet it needs to suit their owner’s lifestyle. If it does not then it can cause and that stress all round. In the worst case scenarios, the pet ends up in a rescue home. So before you get a pet, consider some of the following: •

Look ahead. A dog or cat can live well into their teens. Are you able to give them a good home for the rest of their life?

Can you afford to keep your chosen pets? Large dogs ea more than small cats, and all other costs from buying their basket to vet bills will be correspondingly larger

Are you out all day? In which case you really shouldn’t consider a dog unless he can come too! Do you have a secure garden where a dog or rabbit can run around. If not, maybe you would be better with a cat

Once you’ve decided on the species, you have to think about the breed and then need to decide where to find your new pet.

baggage that they bring with them. For the right owner, this can be a very satisfying solution, but remember they may have been abandoned or badly treated and bear the emotional scars. Reputable rescue homes such as Holly Hedge will help you make this decision and will point you in the direction of a dog that is right for you. If you decide you want a pedigree, then you need to find a reputable breeder. Your new puppy or kitten’s first six months lay down the foundations for a happy and healthy life.

Home & Garden The secret for a stress free home move

M

oving house can seem daunting as well as exciting. It is quite literally “life changing” and can be a source of worry but there is one golden rule which will help… “Take it one step at a time”! You may well have an endless list of questions about the move, even after you have chosen the estate agent that you want to represent you: What do I do about the viewings? How long before I can expect a buyer? “What if I get a low offer…or more than one? What happens if the surveyor finds faults with the house? “What happens if the removal lorry is late or breaks down? What happens if I can’t get the keys to the new house on time? And so on…… All of these questions and countless more are relevant and meaningful but people often worry about many things which may never happen. Try to take things one step at a time and break down the whole process LOGO

into bite size pieces. Think of moving home as a game of chess - you certainly need to keep one eye on the overall goal and it’s important to have a strategy that is individual to your move, after all everyone’s perspective and goals are different. It’s great to be able to plan several moves ahead but we all know that two or three moves along something will happen which will alter your strategy and you may well need to rethink, re-assess, change tack and then move on again. The secret is to deal with each question as and when you come to it. Invariably, with each question comes two or three possible answers or choices. Look at them, analyse them, choose the most appropriate option, discard the others and, like chess, move on without looking back or agonising about the options you didn’t choose. 01275 880550

When you get to the next decision to be taken, do exactly the same thing again and so on and so on. That way you will move forward towards your eventual goal and you will be surprised how rarely the concerns that you may have initially had which loomed large in your mind, actually become a problem or an issue. For more information, telephone Stephen Pring on 01275 880550.

Who says Wood Flooring is expensive?

M

any people believe wood flooring to be too expensive and opt for alternatives such as laminated wood or luxury vinyl which appears cheaper. In fact, wood flooring can work out to be a cheaper alternative when you consider the longer life span and the fitting costs. It is available in solid or engineered format in a range of thickness, widths and finishes with prices starting from as little as £30 m2.

THINKING OF MOVING? You must have seen the “SOLD” boards....! Wood can have a much longer lifespan too, with the option after 10 years of re-sanding, staining and varnishing if you wish to freshen up your home. Fitting costs are around £15 dependent on sub floor work needed, or you could fit it yourself as many of the engineered boards are available with easi-click fitting. Need to find out more? W

Make your front garden sparkle

ith spring arriving, homeowners are starting to take a fresh look at their gardens after the winter period. Front gardens often get overlooked and can be seen as the poor relation to the back garden.

However they are probably the most important area for improving the appearance of your property with the added benefit that you see, after all you pass through this garden each and every day. With planning regulations affecting many aspects of a front garden, it’s well worth getting some professional help if you are thinking of re-planning your property frontage. Front boundaries, drives, outbuildings and some aspects of drainage are all subject to planning restrictions. Terrey Maufe of Outerspace Garden Design and Build, said: “Front gardens can still be green and inviting spaces even if they need to provide parking and storage.

from the road or neighbours, whereas carefully located lighting can highlight specific features and create a warm welcome home.

“It’s often impractical to mow grass at the front of a property so it takes careful planning to balance all the practical considerations with appropriate and attractive planting.”

Outerspace offers fixed priced design packages that include a client briefing session, site survey and assessment and design presentation. Design costs can be confirmed following an initial consultation where indicative budgets can be established.

It may be that your front garden enjoys the best aspect of sunshine at a particular time of day, so having somewhere to sit can help to create a focal point and a sense of a ‘living space’.

Contact Outerspace on 01275 870701 or enquire via www.outerspacegardens.co.uk.

There’s also no reason why a front garden can’t be a productive space, growing fruit and some vegetables is certainly a possibility in some gardens and can be integrated into the overall design of the space. A small garden tree such as a Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ or Amelanchier lamarkii can really bring some scale into the space as well as screening

and sizes. They have either a single or double flower in and come in many different colours.

Below are a few jobs to give you some pointers for the month ahead

1.

We would recommend an acidic or coniferous soil, but compost is adequate.

Vegetables Sow your first carrots; finish planting of late potatoes and earth up earlies; plant cauliflowers at the end of the month; and start sowing of peas, beans, lettuce & radish.

2.

Feed with an acid-based fertilizer. Not necessary if you have used compost.

3.

Water regularly to keep soil moist.

Fruit Ventilate strawberries under cloches and add straw manure and cut back newly planted raspberries.

4.

Keep plants in bright, half-shady locations away from direct sunlight.

5.

Prune after flowering to define the size and shape. Azaleas typically bloom in late winter or early spring and keep blooming for several weeks.

Keep an eye out for pests. Look out for Bee activity and what you are using to control pests. Bees are extremely valuable for our gardens, and allotments. Use organic treatments where you can and always carefully read the instructions. Trees and Shrubs Plant conifers, evergreen trees, shrubs and bamboos; finish pruning roses; remove flower heads of winter flowering plants like azaleas and rhododendrons; and sow onions, beet and winter cabbage. Lawns Mow lawns, weed and feed; apply fertiliser; and lay new turf. Greenhouse Sow seeds of outdoor tomatoes, melon and marrows. Plants of the month Ceanothus This is a lovely shrub with attractive blue, white or pink flowers. It is ideal in a sunny, sheltered position. Our favourite varieties bear large quantities of blue foamy flower from late spring to summer, and will usually flower again in the autumn. Azalea This plant can offer your garden a dazzling amount of colour and beauty and is suitable for all garden types. There are many different species

Interesting fact: Did you know, carrots actually come in a range of colours? White and yellow carrots come from Europe, and purple ones come from the Middle East. The orange ones are a fairly recent invention, created by crossing various other colours.

Get your patio light right

N

ow is the time to spruce up your patio in preparation for the summer months, and to make it as attractive as it should be investing in some light is the answer. When you’re out on the patio with some friends drinking a glass of wine in the evening, good lighting can create an atmosphere everyone enjoys. When it comes to lighting a little light

goes a long way at night so do not go for too bright a light as there is such a thing as over-lighting an area. Instead, use lighting selectively and decide what features to light and to what intensity. If you have any borders around your patio, subtle solar lights within flowerbeds or along paths can create a relaxing mood, although they are unlikely to provide enough practical

light to enable you to see your guests. If you don’t have a natural spot to place solar lights, you can buy patio umbrellas which are fitted with solar lights in the canvas. You can also buy water features which have lights incorporated which can help create the right mood.

A Very Brown Hedge Indeed!

Aphids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental Conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as Greenfly and Blackfly these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe die back. The current troublesome aphid is the Cypress Aphid which predominantly affects Conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches telephone Bartlett Tree Experts for a free consultation and professional advice on 01275 371000. a complete and comprehensive tree care service since 1907

Health & Beauty HypnoBirthing arrives in Nailsea

T

here is welcome news for all those who have heard of HypnoBirthing, as Nailsea and North Somerset residents now have local classes at their disposal. If you haven’t heard of HypnoBirthing and are pregnant, or know someone who is, then it could be perfect. HypnoBirthing was established more than 20 years ago and is going from strength to strength. It is a complete childbirth educational programme where you will learn how to have a calmer, more comfortable birth by eliminating the fear and anxiety that leads to a long, painful labour using simple but very effective techniques to encourage the natural process of giving birth. The course is run over five, two and a half hour classes and teaches a mixture of specifically tailored breathing techniques, deep relaxation, visualisation and easy to learn self-hypnosis to allow your body

to birth your baby in the way it is perfectly designed to do. Sacha Taylor is a passionate HypnoBirthing mum who reaped the benefits of doing the course when she was pregnant so she knows first-hand just how good it is. After her positive experience, she decided to become a qualified HypnoBirthing Practitioner and is fully affiliated with the HypnoBirthing Institute and also a member of FEDANT (Federation of Antenatal

Educators). She teaches from her home in Nailsea and also from Yanley Court in Long Ashton as part of The Natural Pregnancy Partnership based there. She always tries to be flexible however if parents require classes on different days or locations, so please contact her to discuss further. For more information visit her website www.serenitybirthing.co.uk.

Research has shown that HypnoBirthing may help to: • Create a calm, easier peaceful birth experience • Shorten the length of labour • Eliminate or reduce the need for conventional pain relief methods • Reduce the likelihood of surgical birth • Alleviate fatigue during labour, leaving you more energy for the actual birth • Provide a supportive role for your birthing partner • Promote bonding of mother, baby and birthing partner • Encourage a more rapid postnatal recovery

s the Society of Shoe Fitters launches Keep Feet Fit Week starting on March 25, family footwear retailer SoleLution will be holding two weeks of activities to encourage members of the community to look after their feet. Keep Feet Fit Week has been organised to raise the profile of why it is so important to look after our feet, in particular those of our children, by ensuring we wear appropriate and well fitting shoes. The number of people suffering from complaints that can be attributed to ill-fitting and/or inappropriate footwear is on the rise. These range from the more obvious bunions and hammer toes to the less obvious neck, back, shoulder, hip, knee and leg aches and pains and even migraines. More worrying is that these conditions are being seen by GPs and members of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists in patients at a much earlier age than ever before. Why not join SoleLution in celebrating the importance of keeping your feet fit at their High Street store from 25th March to 6th April! The shop has teamed up with Tonic Hair and Beauty House and reflexologist Katharina Yeadon, Clifton Medi Spa and local chiropodists to provide “Ask the Experts” and treatment

or those of you who get frazzled by your children, frustrated in queues for stamps in the post office or even at the airport check in, here’s a useful technique to help you relax and avoid that spiral into stress. Simple breathing techniques can be invaluable at times of stress. Breathing deeply and steadily can reduce tension. A good rhythm to use is the 4:2:6 method. Breath in through your nose, gradually expanding your chest to the count of 4 seconds Hold your breath for a count of two seconds

Breath Out through your mouth, gradually spilling out the

air from your lungs to the count of 6 seconds The more oxygen you get into your bloodstream, the more able you will feel able to cope with your stresses and strains in both mind and body. Remember exhaling is really important for effective relaxation: try to imagine yourself gently blowing your troubles away, if only for a few moments. There’s no need to huff and puff. Be kind to yourself, easy does it. Apply the technique wherever and whenever necessary. It’s simple, unobtrusive and remarkably effective. Health & Beauty Get healthy in 2013 Residents in North Somerset are being encouraged to walk and cycle as part of their daily routine in a bid to promote healthier living. The Government’s Department of Health are calling on councils, schools and workplaces to take steps to enable their communities to be more physically active and change behaviour patterns. In order to encourage cycling, North Somerset Council has produced a range of cycle maps and introduced some signed walking routes in towns and villages. A ‘borrow a bike’ scheme also gives people the chance to try cycling. Over the last five years shared walking and cycling routes have been improved and extended from Yatton to Cheddar, Flax Bourton to Long

Ashton and a new route is planned from Worle to Clevedon in 2013. Regular physical activity is crucial to achieving and maintaining a healthy

Nailsea and District Prostate Group

Nailsea and District Prostate Group meet at Tower House Medical Centre every two months and was formed almost a year ago as a meeting place for men with prostate worries. It is felt that many men keep these concerns to themselves, when they should be followed up through their GPs, and it was felt that such a group would be an outlet for what some men might think an embarrassment Experiences, views and concerns are aired at the meetings and, hopefully, some worries put to rest. The group aims to increase its membership to the point where it can invite talks from medical experts on a variety of topics. It’s other aims include making more public the urgency for all men to undergo basic tests – initially just a blood test; giving sufferers a local voice; where possible, putting pressure on the NHS for national screening, keeping up to date with advances in the treatment of prostate and urinary problems; and asking the NHS for a more uniform process to allow for more informed choices of treatment. Their next coffee morning, and indeed their first AGM, is on Wednesday, April 17 at 10.30am in the Somerset Room of Tower House Medical Centre. Anyone interested as a sufferer or a carer is welcome, and for further information visit www.nadpg.org.uk, or call Gordon on 01275 858291 or Peter on 01275 854696.

Health & Beauty Exercise of the Month: L e g B l a s t e r S q u a t s Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try. This month he talks you through Leg Blaster Squats.

A

lthough children often demonstrate the perfect squat, many adults will struggle through lack of strength, poor flexibility, and/or a pre-existing injury. More alike to a Hack Squat, Leg Blaster Squats offer many of the benefits of squatting while reducing stress on the lower back and knees. They are a perfect introduction for developing your thighs and building lower body strength and can prove taxing for many advanced athletes too by simply increasing the repetitions or adding weight. To perform the exercise at home, a doorframe, post, or secure handrail can be used for support. The latter will prove more comfortable. In a gym environment, an equipment machine upright or a locked-in smith-bar is suitable. Take a firm hold of your support (doorframe, handrail, etc.) with your toes in-line with your hands. Your hands should naturally fall around hip-height. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart and facing forward. Ensuring a tight hold of your support, lean back. Then, bend your knees ever-so-slightly, taking the strain onto your thighs. This is the exercise startposition. Inhale, and bend your knees – lowering yourself down until your thighs are parallel (if comfortable, further, as pictured). This is the exercise mid-position. Exhale, as you extend your knees to assume the start-position. Repeat as appropriate.

hundreds of exercise examples featured on Matt’s free-todownload workout app and free-onlineresource. You can also follow Matt on Facebook (GymProfessor.com Fan Page) or Twitter (@GymProfessor).

Healthy beginners of a normal weight should struggle to perform 10 repetitions for 2 sets, but should quickly improve. Advanced trainers should struggle to perform 30 to 50 repetitions for 4 sets. H Business

Every month Della Hudson of Hudson Accountants will be providing advice on helping you to get more out of your business. Here Alison Macfarlane Hull FCIPP, in conjunction with Hudson Accountants, talks about payroll data. Alison owns www.nannymatters.co.uk , specialists in nanny payrolls, and www.payteam.co.uk , who run payrolls for small businesses and charities.

H

From April 6, HMRC require all small and medium-sized employers to submit payroll data on or before every pay day.

Hudson Accountants Chartered Accountants

It’s called Real Time Information, or RTI, because HMRC are receiving the information in real time, as opposed to waiting until the end of the tax year.

Helping you grow your beans; not just counting them

It’s a very simple concept, but the implications for employers are huge. For example, weekly payrolls suddenly become much more expensive to run (52 submissions a year) so more and more employers are transferring to monthly pay.

01275 406287

admin@hudsonaccountants.co.uk www.hudsonaccountants.com

Anyone recruiting and setting up a payroll for the first time will be looking to agree monthly pay. RTI allows HMRC to calculate exactly how much tax and NI is payable by employers every pay day, so any employer that is in the habit of holding onto the deductions and paying them over at year end will find themselves caught out. That change alone will bring in a huge one-off ‘windfall’ to the Treasury. However, the main driving force behind the change is the new Universal Credit benefit calculations, which depend on HMRC holding current earnings information. That’s why HMRC are being accused of rushed in RTI, with many employers not yet aware. RTI also strikes a blow against illegal ‘cash in hand’ payments. Under the new rules HMRC will hold details for everyone, so they can identify gaps in the employment record and ask difficult questions.

ATTE NTION: SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS HMRC’s Real Time Information (RTI) is here

This means that from 6 April 2013, you cannot pay your staff without first notifying HMRC!

Is your software RTI-compliant? Do you know how to use it? We offer a fully-managed low-cost payroll service that includes free employment advice, from as low as £200pa + VAT We specialise in small employer payrolls with over 800 fully-compliant happy clients

So what should employers do? Don’t panic – but do act now. If you use a third party to run your payroll, you just need to make sure your payroll records are complete and up to date, and check your payroll provider is organised and will make the submissions for you. If you run the payroll yourself, think seriously about outsourcing. A specialist payroll provider should provide an instant, cost effective solution. You no longer have to pay for expensive software upgrades and you should be able to rely on their knowledge and expertise. Check their set-up fees as well as on-going charges.

Students say basketball is ‘wheely’ good

N

ailsea School students played basketball with a difference thanks to South West Scorpions and local charity Motivation. The Scorpions visited the school to run wheelchair basketball sessions for students and assistant coach Ally Webb worked with a range of students of different ages throughout the day, teaching them the basics of the sport. Students were then allocated wheelchairs to practice in before competing in short games. The sessions were enormously successful with all the students taking part and many expressed an interest in taking the sport further. Samantha Leigh of Year 10 said: “It was really fun and entertaining – not

as hard as I thought it would be.”

still a vehicle of fun and social activity.”

Abigail Bush, also of Year 10, added: “It was really interesting and a good change to normal PE lessons.”

The South West Scorpions provide opportunities for children and adults from Bristol and the surrounding area to play the exciting sport of wheelchair basketball.

The day was organised through the international development charity Motivation, which supports people with mobility disabilities and has a long-standing relationship with the school, with staff raising money annually for wheelchairs for third world countries. PE teacher Dominic Graffagnino said “The day has really helped Nailsea students understand and experience the difficulties that others go through on a day to day basis, as well as in a sporting context.

They now have three junior teams and have recently added a women’s team. Athletes have a wide range of abilities and impairments, including spina bifida, cerebral palsy, amputations and congenital impairments and some have no disability at all. The first things to go are often the luxuries – meals out, beauty treatments, things that are not regarded as a necessity. Some people might include gym membership in this category, yet experts suggest that in these difficult financial times, maintaining health and well being can be even more important than ever. Strode Leisure Centre is working

Motor Study reveals British Cars lose value fastest

ritish cars lose more than half of their value over 4 years, according to research from car search engine Adzuna.co.uk. The research, conducted earlier this year, analysed more than 600,000 used car ads indexed on Adzuna from across UK locations, extracting asking prices for the most popular models. The price was then placed against new car prices from 2009, resulting in a ‘depreciation score’ for every car.

British car brands have lost their value faster than cars from any other country in Europe, losing on average 51% of their worth over four years, while French cars follow closely behind on 49%. German and Italian cars hold their value better, falling just 40% over the same period. The cars that keep their value the most over time are Volkswagen Polos and SMART cars as they retain three quarters of their new price after four years.
