St John Ambulance volunteer given Royal seal of approval

A

Portishead resident and St John Ambulance volunteer has been honoured for his work with the first aid charity with an investiture into the Order of St John.

“My work as a volunteer for St John Ambulance has allowed me to support the next generation of first aiders so they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved”.

Micky Marks from Portishead has been recognised for outstanding service to its key foundations – one of which is St John Ambulance, the nation’s leading first aid charity, and he had his dedication marked in a prestigious ceremony in the Order’s historic 12th century Priory Church in London’s Clerkenwell.

Micky is a support worker with the Badger, Cadet and Adult units in the Portishead and Pill Division and also a member of the division’s property and maintenance committee, responsible for the maintenance of the charity’s divisional headquarters in Lodway, Pill.

The Order of St John is a Royal Order of Chivalry and Her Majesty the Queen, its Sovereign Head, approves each recipient.

Micky, who lives in The Paddock and has been a volunteer with the charity for 40 years, said: “I feel very proud to be admitted to the Order of St John. It was a nice surprise to have been nominated.

Micky, who works as a first aid instructor, has used his own skills many times over the years, including while off duty on skiing holidays dealing with fellow holidaymakers who had sustained broken limbs.

Spreading the message about the importance of first aid has become a family affair for Micky as his partner Sally Ecroyd and daughter Hayley Marks are both members of St John Ambulance.

Sally has also been invested into the Order of St John in recognition for her work with the Portishead and Pill Badgers. She also trains younger members in first aid for the charity’s competitions, which help young people learn life saving first aid skills.

Hayley, who accompanied her father to the investiture, joined the charity as a Badger and is now an adult member.

New lifeboat station in Portishead a possibility

T

he Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has submitted a planning application to North Somerset District Council for a new lifeboat station at Portishead.

The charity plans to demolish the former Masonic Lodge and construct a purpose built facility for the local lifeboat team. This is the latest move toward the RNLI eventually adopting the Portishead Lifeboat.

Toilets, a small workshop, store area and a souvenir sales point would also be included in the design. An extension that would be constructed at an angle to the main building would house the lifeboat and launching rig.

The RNLI first unveiled their proposals for a new lifeboat station last May at a public meeting held in the town.

Dave Herbert, Press Officer for the Trust, said: “The Portishead Lifeboat Trust is pleased to see the RNLI have submitted a planning application for development of a new lifeboat station.

Tom Mansell, RNLI Divisional Inspector for the South West, said the views of the local community have helped shape the application: “The general reaction from local people to our plans to operate from this site has been very positive but we have taken into account the numerous comments made at the public meeting before submitting our application.”

“This is the next positive step towards what we hope will be the mutually agreed adoption of The Portishead Lifeboat Trust by the charity.”

If planning consent is granted a fundraising campaign would be launched in support of the project to build the new lifeboat station and work would start later this year.

Community News Lights committee launch recycling campaign

P

ortishead Christmas Lights committee has launched a town wide textile recycling campaign in support of the town’s Christmas lights.

Committee member Dennis O’Neil said: “We have been asked to extend the illuminations

further this year so that they include the youth centre, scout hut and Brunel Court, in Harbour Road and Station Road.

This will cost more money so we need to find a way to do this.”

The committee is appealing to every household in Portishead to look out their unwanted clothes and textiles and donate it for recycling. Dennis or a member of his team will collect bags of unwanted goods from your door.

The unwanted items will be weighed and the lights organisation will receive money for each kilo donated. In addition, the unwanted items will be distributed to people in need around the world.

Throughout February call Dennis on 01275 843646 or Barry on 01275 844301 to arrange a collection or take items to Portishead Youth Centre in Harbour Road during its opening hours.

Last year more than 3.25 tonnes of clothing was collected raising £2,160.00 for the lights and organisers are hoping the town can exceed this figure in 2013.

Valentine’s Day Bird Box Making

he Avon Wildlife Trust is hosting a Valentine’s Day Bird Box Making event on Thursday, February 14 at the Horseshoe Nails green space on Pheonix Way. You can buy a pre-made bird box as a gift for your loved one for £10 or put some love and care into making your own for £6.

Community News Portishead resident wants Danny Boy recognition

he Friends of Blacknore Lighthouse are getting ready to prepare for the summer and some restoration work on the landmark.

The group will be hosting a fundraising social evening at the Portishead Bowling Club Pavilion in the Lakegrounds and it will be attended by some very special guests.

Bill Shier, of the Friends of Blacknore Lighthouse, said:

Members of the Ashford family will be in attendance. The Ashford family lived at Black Nore Farm just down the footpath from the Lighthouse and maintained it.

From the time it was built in 1894, the Ashfords rewound its drive mechanisms daily; and for the next 85 years, three generations of the family continued to operate it.

The social evening, with a buffet and presentations, will take place

“Our Lighthouse is secure and this is an achievement that we can all be proud of, and we had fun doing it.

Blacknore Lighthouse has had good coverage on both radio and Television in recent months, with a slot on the John Darvall Show in November and a feature on Inside Out West on BBC1.

Portishead resident and former Fleet Street journalist is hoping to get the famous song Danny Boy and its creator the recognition they deserve in the song’s centenary year.

George Yeaman has just published a 66-page book entitled A Century For Danny Boy and the author is calling for an international celebration of the song.

Lakegrounds and Esplanade the Fred Weatherly Walk after the West Country lawyer who composed the popular Irish ballad.

Mr Yeaman said: “Fred’s home overlooked the Lakegrounds and it would be great to have an annual music walk in recognition of this remarkable lyricist.”

The English songwriter and poet was born at what was then Number 7, Woodhill, in 1849 and music publishers Boosey & Hawkes published Danny Boy in 1913.

Community News Christmas Eve collection raises more than £1000

ortishead Rotary Club have raised £1,256 for the Young Carers Group and other Rotary Charities.

With the help of 2494 Squadron Air Training Corps they carried out bag packing at Waitrose throughout the Christmas Eve shopping day.

The Rotary Club would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped throughout the long day including the Air Training Corps and the Management and Staff of Waitrose.

The Portishead Rotary club members, along with their partners and volunteers, also spent a day last month collecting for Rotary Local Charities. They managed to collect a total of £694. The Rotary club would like to thank the management of the Cooperative and Lidl stores who allowed the collection to take place on their premises.

Concert raises £1,000 for Portishead Goldies

he Portishead branch of South West charity Golden Oldies have managed to raise more than £1,000 thanks to a Christmas concert and a generous donation from the Lions Club of Portishead.

Lions Club of Portishead the total exceeded £1,000.

A group of more than 30 Goldies, who attend the weekly singing sessions at the Jubilee Hall on Slade Road, performed in a Christmas concert to a packed audience at the Methodist Church on the High Street.

Organised by Choir member and Goldies Session Leader, Julie Lucas, the combined concert with the Portishead Community choir, led by Wendy Sergeant and the Goldies from Portishead, left the audience thoroughly entertained.

The proceeds of the concert generated more than £700 and with a donation of £350 from Kelvin Hughes on behalf of the

We are very grateful to her for running the weekly sessions, which give older people the opportunity to enjoy a social activity.”

Bell returns to Portishead

A

much loved symbol of the town’s maritime history has now gone on display in the centre of the town.

The bronze bell from Portishead’s Battery Point lighthouse has been craned into place onto the grass central reservation at Wyndham Way, near the Cabstand junction.

The bell, which weighs two tonnes and is 1.5 metres tall and 1.1 metres deep, used to hang in the lighthouse and automatically sound to warn sailors of treacherous weather conditions.

It was put in the lighthouse when it was built in March 1931 by Chance Brothers of Smethwick but removed around 14 years ago because of concerns surrounding the structural strength of the lighthouse.

Local residents Carol Thomas and Annette Hennessy worked tirelessly to locate the bell and bring it back to the town two years ago.

They went door to door collecting money and produced Battery Point mugs to sell to raise the £3,500 needed for repairs to the landmark. Now the historic piece has been given pride of place in the town.

Whooping cough warning

P

regnant women in Portishead are being urged by health chiefs to get vaccinated for whooping cough and protect themselves and their unborn babies.

Across the south west numbers of confirmed cases are amongst the highest in England

and are two and a half times higher than the average.

Cases of the illness continue to rise in North Somerset – last year there were 73 confirmed cases compared with six in 2008.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the past 12 months have seen an exceptional rise in the number of confirmed cases nationwide.

Many adults think that whooping cough cannot affect them, particularly if they were themselves immunised as children but the vaccine wears off in adulthood and can be passed onto children with serious results.

The signs to look out for are severe coughing fits accompanied by the characteristic “whoop” sound in young children and a prolonged cough in older children and adults, and anyone experiencing these should visit their GP immediately.

Footballers provide Christmas cheer for youngsters

Y

oungsters at the Playport were joined by four local football stars for their Christmas party.

Bristol City players Jonathan Stead, Marvin Elliott, Liam Fontaine and Ryan Taylor, who are all local to the town, were on hand to help Playport regulars celebrate the festive season. Santa arrived also to everyone’s delight.

Parents should also ensure their children are up to date with their vaccinations.

Playport director Matt Carter was delighted with the day and said: “John Stead, who helped coordinate it, and Liam Fontane are often down here with their families. It went really well and was well supported. The city lads got involved with all the guests, which was great, and everyone had a fantastic time.

Stall holders wanted for festival of fun

Festival of Fun will take place at Portishead Primary School – and organisers are on the lookout for stall holders.

It is being organised by the Children’s Emergency Department from the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and will take place on Saturday, March 2.

The event is to raise money for distraction equipment which will greatly help to improve the experience children receive whilst in the department.

Portishead resident hopes for music success

A

solo musician based in Portishead is releasing his debut album this month as an entirely free download.

Joe Perkins has compiled an album which features 12 different emerging lead vocalists and draws influence from countless musical worlds.

Titled ‘A Host of Other Artists’, it will be released on Monday, February 11, through his website www.joeperkins.co.uk, with lead single ‘Flying High’ out a week earlier on February 4.

Griffiths, who is also a Portishead resident.

Joe said: “Working with so many vocalists on a single album is an unusual concept and one that we don’t come across very often, but I think it fits pretty well into the way music is consumed nowadays.

“Like it or not the album in its traditional form doesn’t really exist anymore – we hear a song we like, tag it in Shazam, download the mp3 and then listen to it on a portable device alongside thousands of other tracks.”

Rescue Coastguard awarded Queen’s diamond jubilee volunteering award

I

t was announced by Her Majesty The Queen that the volunteer Coastguard Rescue Service which is part of Her Majesty’s Coastguard has been awarded The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Award 2012.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Award 2012 is a special, one-off category of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, which was established in 2002 as part of the UK honours system and is considered to be the MBE for community voluntary groups.

All Coastguard Officers whether full time or volunteer are both delighted and honoured to receive this Award.

The Coastguard Rescue Service provides the UK’s coastal search and rescue capability including cliff, mud and shoreline rescue and, as part of Her Majesty’s Coastguard, it can operate separately or jointly with other emergency services and volunteer rescue organisations.

Call Outs

T

he Portishead Coastguard Mud Rescue Team was called by Avon and Somerset Police to assist in an incident at night, where a person was threatening to jump from a bridge spanning the River Avon where it joins with Bedminster and is known locally as the ‘Cut.’

At that time of the night the tide was almost at its lowest level and both teams were asked to attend in case they had to extract the casualty from the mud.

Negotiators talked to the person, who in the end came down from the bridge.

Other 999 services on the scene were the Avon Fire and Rescue Mud Team from Bedminster.

elcome to the first edition of Lifeline for 2013. We would like to thank all of our supporters in this edition as without them we would not be able to operate this lifesaving service. We are now entering our 18th year as a Charitable Trust, lets hope it leads to many more!

RECENT CALL OUTS (shouts): 25th Nov - Tasked to attend to a person attempting to jump from Clifton Suspension Bridge.

17th Nov - Requested to launch as a dog was in difficulty off of Clevedon Pier having chased a deer into the water. Crew were able to herd the dog safely back to his owners. It may seem odd to respond to pets in danger, but there is strong evidence that owners will put themselves in danger to assist beloved pets - 1 dog assisted 5th Nov - Called to recover a body from the River Avon.

28th Oct - Tasked with Portishead & Clevedon Coastguard teams to reports of a person in the water off Clevedon Pier. After

searching, a local fisherman confirmed that a swimmer had in fact entered the water and come back ashore.

6th Oct - Called to act as SAR (Southern Area Rescue) back up, to assist 2 people in the water in Portishead Marina. Lifeboat stood down just before launch.

30th Sep - Tasked to a yacht with steering failure, it was towed to Ladye Bay in Clevedon and put to anchor due to ebbing tide. Lifeboat returned on the next tide and towed them to Portishead Marina - 3 people assisted.

Lifeline Crew Profile: Tony Daw When did you join the PLT? I joined a few months before we had our first Lifeboat! I remember the excitement. Thanks to Clist & Rattle, they allowed us to display the boat to the public in their car showroom.

Although we had a boat and engines on display we only had enough money for the boat. Thanks to the manufacturer giving us the engines for display we were able to raise the money in no time.

How many Lifeboats have you seen in service? The original Portishead Lifeboat was replaced with a new boat of very similar specification and was the first to be given a name ‘Denbar Sage’ we now have a third on lease from the RNLI. This is an Atlantic 75. I have served as Helm on all 3.

What is your day job? I’m a Technical Specialist in the Environment Agency Flood & Coastal Risk Management.

How old are you? 53, quite young really.

What is your most memorable shout?

It was midnight and were called to 2nd Severn Crossing, very dark, raining, very high winds, and very high sea.

It took us 3 times longer to get there than normal, having battled waves several metres above us as we got to the Bridge we were stood down! We turned in to the wind to come back....that is another story!

St Katherine’s musical wows audiences

t Katherine’s School in Ham Green continued its reputation for exceptionally good whole school productions with ‘Fame’.

The popular musical was a sell out and was on over three nights before the end of term, and it featured energetic dance routines and popular songs.

Kelly Burgess, Performing Arts Coordinator, commented: “The enthusiasm, commitment and energy put into this production by all

Choir to celebrate ‘Danny Boy’ centenary

C

hoir mistress Wendy Sergeant is on the look-out for music groups to help mark the centenary of the well known song Danny Boy.

Singing for the Brain is one of the singing groups set up for people with dementia and their carers.

Wendy is busy arranging the song for her choirs to sing this year and would love to hear from other music groups who would like to do the same.

Musical memories can stay in the brain even when diseases like Alzheimer’s have damaged other areas of memory and sufferers often amaze those around them by singing songs, with all the right words, that they learned many years earlier.

Wendy runs groups which include Portishead Community Choir, Pill Community Choir and Portishead in Harmony. She said: “Singing is really good for you, it helps you breathe better, helps you improve your posture, but most of all it helps reduce stress.

“Singing in a group or choir can be amazingly uplifting and for people who live alone, it can provide social time with a lively, friendly group.”

Singing can also help people with dementia.

Music & Dance Youth Club on look out for new girl group

C

ould you be part of the next Girls Aloud or Little Mix?

Portishead Youth Club is looking to form a girl group to perform at a talent showcase in April.

Young people interested in getting involved in the group will get the chance to work with music teachers to learn how to sing as a group with harmonies.

The club is also on the lookout for young people to take part in a talent showcase in April and all performers, musicians, singers, comedians, magicians and entertainers are welcome.

Anyone interested can contact the youth workers at the centre, or go along to the Tuesday evening sessions (6.30-9.30pm) to practise their skills.

In other Youth Centre news, due to the popularity of the existing Street Dance classes, more have been introduced.

Classes for young people aged 10 plus run from 6.30-7.30pm every Tuesday, and Street Dancersize classes for adults run from 7.308.30pm. Both cost £3.50 per session.

: I recently engaged a factor to collect some debts from my customers. How do I go about accounting for this? I’ve already received some cash from the factor.

I’ve had problems with customers paying in the past, so I am now on the Cash Accounting Scheme for VAT.

A

: Technically speaking, the cash you received from the factor is in fact a loan and is therefore exempt for VAT purposes. So you do not need to account for the VAT on the debts at the point you receive payments from the factor.

Instead, you account for the VAT in the VAT period the customers pay the factor. The factor should issue you with statements, so that you can identify when and how much the customers pay.

You should account for the VAT on the amount the factors manage to recover; not the original invoiced amount.

Please also note that if the factor deducts any commission or charges before remitting you the balance, you should continue to base the VAT on the amount the factor received from your customers; not the lower amount they eventually paid you.

Acoustic Who in Portishead

he Who fans are in for a real treat this month as Acoustic Who play at the Portishead Working Men’s Club on Saturday, February 9.

Not so much a tribute band, more a tribute to Pete Townsend’s songs, and these timeless creations are re-interpreted with electro-acoustic guitars, bass and drums, while being true to the energetic power and passion of the originals.

Midlands-based Acoustic Who are an in demand, in your face, act featuring Dodgy Poultry on vocals, Sweet Townsend on guitars, Detox on bass and Full Moon on drums and pyrotechnics.

Some of the songs you can hear at an acoustic gig include I Can’t Explain, The Seeker, Won’t Get Fooled Again, Love Ain’t for Keeping, Doctor Jimmy, See Me Feel Me, Pinball Wizard. The show will start at 8.30pm.

Snow White for Players T

he Portishead Players 90th anniversary season continues apace with the pantomime Snow White by Alexandra Slater.

Directed by Katie Strong, it is being performed at Somerset Hall from Thursday, February 14-Saturday, February 16.

The famous story of Snow White and her jealous stepmother inspired Disney to create a cartoon classic and Portishead Players are taking on the challenge of a brand new stage version of this famous tale, bringing to their audience a fresh adaptation, full of fun and music.

A delightful show awaits you with a beautiful heroine, evil queen, good fairies, kindly dwarfs and plenty of magic.

The show starts at 7.30pm each evening and there will be a 2pm matinée performance on the Saturday afternoon.

Turn off Old Church Road to find plentiful parking, and then take the steps up for first views over the Marine Lake. Then if you go up to the left, you begin the climb to the top of Wain’s Hill. Soon enough, you’ll find a stone folly with arched windows which frame three very poetic scenes!

As you make your way towards the point remember Coleridge, George Gissing and WM Thackeray, the eponymous poets…climbing up to a grassy plateau looking out to sea, you can begin to feel the lonely wildness they found so inspiring.

At sunset the light catches on the mudflats creating wonderful patterns, and up here you can also find remains of a Napoleonic battery and an Iron Age fort!

Looking out over this view of the old town harbour and the mouth of the Land Yeo river 180 years ago, the Anglican minister John Ashley and his son wondered about how inhabitants of Flat Holm Island

would ever get to church… By 1839 Ashley’s first chapel on a ship set sail to criss cross the channel. Today the Mission to Seafarers continues, serving sailors in 240 international ports.

As you work your way back down the hill you’ll see the gate to the ancient church of St Andrew – an outstanding example of Norman architecture built 900 years ago. A good poem to read here would be Tennyson’s In Memoriam AHH – The poem mourns the loss of a dear friend, and became a favourite of Queen Victoria. You probably know it already…

Recipe - Black Treacle Marmalade Makes about 10lb Cooking Time – Two and a half hours You will need: 1.3kg Seville Oranges 2 Lemons 2.8 lts Water 2.7kg Sugar 2 Tablespoons of Black Treacle

Instructions: 1. Wash and scrub the oranges and lemons.

2. Cut fruit in half and squeeze out the juice 3. Remove pips and membrane and discard 4. Cut the peel into thin shreds and place in a large preserving pan with the juice and water.

5. Bring to the boil and simmer gently, uncovered, for about two hours, until the contents of the pan are reduced by about half and the peel in really soft.

6. Add the sugar and black treacle and stir until completely dissolved.

7. Bring to the boil and boil rapidly until setting point is reached.

8. Allow to cook for 5-10 minutes before potting, and stir well to distribute peel.

Pour into cooled sterilised jars and seal.

9. Label and store

Note: Setting Point – chill a plate in the fridge, put a teaspoon of marmalade on the plate, cool for one minute and then push the surface with your finger. If the marmalade wrinkles then setting point is reached.

Get fit with Nic My experience by Kevin Emery

I

’ve always thought keeping fit to be quite boring. You run on your own, you work out on your own; it seems to me to be a rather lonely experience.

What you need is to be able to get fit while having some fun at the same time.

I was invited along to one of Nic’s Energy and Fitness classes. Qualified fitness and dance instructor Nic Devonshire has been running energy and fitness classes in Portishead, Clevedon and Nailsea for some time now.

So it was to the Clevedon Conservative Club I went to see what all of the fuss was about.

Nic runs three classes this evening; Bokwa, Fitness and Zumba – and I did them all.

Bokwa is a cardio workout where participants draw letters and numbers with their feet to the beat of the music.

My sense of timing and rhythm is terrible but, while I struggled at first, by the end of the class I was drawing J’s, B’s, C’s and L’s with my moves. Well nearly.

I felt a bit more at ease with the fitness class, which involved aerobic exercise, toning floor work and body conditioning, but after the thorough workout I was on my last legs; not a good sign as I still had Zumba to come.

I’ve never been much of a mover, in fact the least said about my dancing the better, but it was good fun. The upbeat tempo of the music lends itself to an energising workout.

The main bonus is that you get a good workout too. Nic takes all three classes – and I don’t know how she does it.

Is it possible to have fun AND exercise?

Exercise of the Month: Stiff

Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try. This month he talks you through Stiff-Arm Circles.

ome of my most popular exercises to perform within the gym, I’ve never known taught or performed in any other gym or academy – they’re almost forgotten exercises.

One such exercise is Stiff-Arm Circles (called ‘Around-the-World’ by my 78 year old friend Bob, of Bob’s Gym).

With many people experiencing a shoulder injury (normally Rotator Cuff ) at some point within their lives, Stiff-Arm Circles really is an exercise that should be included within your gym workout routine.

Alternatively, you can perform this exercise at home with two bottles of water (choose suitable sized plastic bottles and fill as appropriate).

Performed correctly and used in conjunction with more familiar shoulder exercises (e.g. in a multi-set), it can help toward working and strengthening your shoulder complex in almost every plane. Increased strength and increased mobility – that’s the way to avoid a shoulder injury in the first instance!

You’ll need “baby” weights for this exercise – I’m serious. No “hero” antics of picking up big weights and losing form completely and/or injuring yourself.

Lots of carrots, French beans and leeks that we love and thank goodness not too many courgettes. So let’s see if I can stick to the plan!

Sowing starts big time in April / May and we’ll go straight outdoors rather than all the faffing about sowing into seed trays, then potting them up again (and again).

Then forgetting to water them and having to start all over again! Straight outdoors worked the first year so fingers crossed it will this year.
