Save Old Mill Road!

Talks are ongoing regarding plans to knock down 23 business units in Old Mill Road to make way for a development that could include up to 100 new homes.

B

usiness owners have come together to launch a campaign to fight the proposals and are calling on members of the local community to join them and voice their objections.

Old Mill Road is one of Portishead’s oldest remaining commercial areas and provides employment for almost 300 local people.

It currently sustains more than 20 businesses, ranging from a popular gym and a thriving kitchenware company to the largest and busiest garage in town.

As a group the businesses are incredibly active in the community, supporting local charities and sports clubs and training up local youngsters on apprenticeship schemes.

Land owners Standard Life propose replacing the existing units with retail outlets which will have homes above them but they clearly have aspirations to maximise the residential potential of the site.

Campaigners and many members of the community are desperate to stop the current trend of using commercial sites in Portishead for more housing. However, some fear that the changes are a foregone conclusion.

In July of this year the area was re-allocated as a town centre site under North Somerset Council’s Sites and Policies Plan.

This effectively changes its status to be repurposed from a protected employment site to a mixed-use site, which includes residential development. North Somerset Council has agreed to reduce the number of residential units from 100 to 20 but campaigners insist that the council must go further to restrict the developers.

Business Owner Ryan Peake says: “Obviously we are passionate about our businesses. We have built them up from scratch and put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears. But this is personal to everyone who lives in Portishead.

“Taking away the vital amenities we have here to make way for more retail units and homes will increase traffic on the roads and have a detrimental effect on our High Street as more businesses are forced to move out of town.

“Also, if demand for the retail units is low, as it has already proven to be in other recently developed areas of Portishead, the units will end up being turned into homes too and the whole area will become yet another housing

development. If the proposed changes are allowed to go ahead they will affect peoples’ standard of living without a doubt.”

the support of local people they are hoping to achieve ongoing protection for Old Mill Road as a safeguarded employment site.

This is certainly consistent with North Somerset Council’s Sites and Policies Plan, which states that: “Economic development is a priority for North Somerset as it has suffered from low levels of economic activity in recent years relative to high levels of residential development.”

Claire Cleeves, owner of The Fitness Hub Gym says: “These plans go against so much set out in the national planning policy framework - like building a strong, competitive economy, ensuring the vitality of town centres and promoting healthy communities.”

MP Liam Fox is supporting the campaign, as are many town and district Councillors, and more than 2,000 local people have already pledged their support via social media. If you agree that Old Mill Road should be safe from developers, the campaign needs your help.

Youth centre

on air

Radio Dynamic, a local station which is run by members of Portishead Youth Club, has gone from strength to strength this year.

O

ver the summer the youngsters broadcast live for a week as part of the centre’s 50 year anniversary celebrations. It was such a success that they are now keen to secure a licence to allow them to operate again in 2017.

Youth development worker and assistant manager at the Harbour Road centre, Kimberley Jones, said: “The work young people put in to the broadcast continues throughout the year. We run training sessions at the youth

club so that newcomers can learn the ropes, and our members record jingles and conduct interviews to include in their shows.”

To enable the radio broadcasting to take place each year, the youth club needs to raise funds to put towards equipment and the licence.

This comes from local businesses who are invited to advertise on the radio and the youngsters are now appealing for local companies to come forward and take an advertising slot.

Portishead girl Frankie Spears cut off her beautiful long locks to raise money for the Little Princess Trust, a charity which manufactures real hair wigs for children following treatment for cancer and alopecia.

A

t the time of writing nine year old Frankie had raised over £1,000 as well as donating the 28cm/11 inches of her hair

that were cut for the charity to use.

Frankie’s mum Sarah Spears said: “Frankie set herself a target of £300 and managed to smash this through sponsor forms and on her just giving page. We’re obviously very proud of her.”

Frankie would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored her and helped her reach and far exceed her target. She would also like to thank Chris at Portishead Photography who captured the moment with some great before and after shots.

Youngsters learn about ethical trading

M

embers of the 2nd Redcliffe Bay Brownies Rainbows group gathered at Sainsbury’s in Portishead to learn about the concept of fair trade.

The youngsters, aged from 5 to 7, learned about the importance of fair trade and how to identify ethically sourced products from the Fairtrade logo.

They were also able to show off their creative skills, producing some fair trade related artwork. The group were then given the task of hunting for Fairtrade products on the shelves and thoroughly enjoyed tucking into some chocolate and milkshake – all Fairtrade of course.

The Fairtrade foundation is an international movement which changes

the way trade works through better prices, decent working conditions and a fairer deal for farmers and workers in developing countries.

Sainsbury’s run regular educational events for youngsters and as the biggest retailer of Fairtrade products is committed to teaching the next generation about sourcing and buying with integrity.

RAG Week raises over

£4,000

for charity

An amazing £4,289.52 was raised for charity when Gordano School students dressed up for RAG Week this autumn.

T

hroughout the week, students wore an array of outfits including superheroes, hippies, Disney character costumes and their favourite pyjamas.

This year’s RAG Week included a host of activities organised by Sixth Form students, including a quiz, students versus staff bleep test, three goal football, RAG Fair, name the bear competition and a disco for Year 7.

Hannah Clay and Jonathan Shipp were joint student chairs of RAG this year and said: “RAG this year has been a huge success with a great turn out from students and teachers alike. We have had a range of events from discos to sponging teachers for our charities this year: Mend the Gap, and Teenage Cancer Trust. We

hope this money goes a long way and helps make a difference.

“Thanks everyone for your generous donations, especially Portishead’s local Sainsbury’s store who have supported us for the last three RAG years.”

Jeanne Fairs, Head of Sixth Form, said: “As ever it is overwhelming to see the creativity and ingenuity our students use to fundraise for our chosen charities. We really appreciate the support our local community gives this week, both financially and physically.”

All the money raised was split between Mend the Gap and the Teenage Cancer Trust. Mend the Gap will use the money to pay the salaries of teachers in Gordano School’s partner school in Bochoroke, Kenya. Students will visit the school this summer to see how their funds have been used.

Family businesses show their support for

the Christmas lights

Portishead’s Christmas lights display has been even bigger this year thanks to the generous support of local business.

uture Bathrooms was once again the main sponsor, signing a deal that enabled

organisers to extend the lights on to Wyndham Way and light up the trees that run alongside the historic bell.

The company also sponsored the firework finale for the switchon ceremony. Paige Millerchip from Future Bathrooms said: “We are a Portishead business run by a Portishead family and we know how important the Christmas lights are to the town, which is why we are so pleased to be able to offer our support.”

Thanks to another family-run business, this year the lights also ran through the walkway from Waitrose Garage to Portishead Library in Harbour Road. Funeral directors F H Halliday and Son, which has operated in Portishead High Street for more than 100 years, sponsored the new

lights that stretched from the community garden alongside the garage and past the library towards the piazza. General Manager Matthew Aldridge said: “F H Halliday and Son has been part of the Portishead community since the 1800s and we are always pleased to get involved in community projects. We are very happy to be helping to extend the town’s brilliant festive illuminations.”

BBC Breakfast film water

Reporters from BBC Breakfast News came to Portishead at the end of October to capture footage of the heroic canines of Clapton-in-Gordano’s Newfound Friends.

T

he organisation which was formed 26 years ago with the objective of raising money for children’s charities has gone from strength to strength and is now a multi award winning charity in its own right.

By holding rescue demonstrations around the country Newfound Friends have raised money for charities including Children’s Hospice South West, Dogs for the Disabled, PDSA and MS Therapy.

Presenter Tim Muffett witnessed a rescue demonstration at Portishead’s marina and spoke with Toni Curtis who was saved by rescue dog Whizz after suffering an asthma attack while in the water. Whizz sadly passed away earlier this year having saved nine people from drowning throughout his distinguished career.

He was honoured posthumously with an OBE from PDSA and his legacy is set to continue as new dogs are trained up to follow in his pawprints.

An issue with the proposals for Old Mill Road has already been identified and this has been reconsidered but this is your opportunity to tell North Somerset Council how you see the future of our town.

Youth Council

Portishead in Bloom Once again Portishead in Bloom achieved Gold at both the South West in Bloom and the Britain in Bloom competitions due to the hard work and commitment of all the volunteers.

We all see the tubs, planters, baskets and garden areas being worked on – weeding, different seasonal plantings, watering, etc – but there is so much more which goes on behind the scenes. The ‘In Bloom’ competition judges consider all aspects of the town, from allotments to open spaces and general tidiness, and community, volunteer and school involvement. The Portishead in Bloom committee has to submit a portfolio of evidence and this year it has created a new DVD showing the work that is done. As with all our voluntary organisations Portishead in Bloom would love to hear from you if you can help in any way.

West of England joint spatial plan and joint transport study A working party has been set up to formulate the Town Council’s response to both of these and this will be discussed at the next Town Council Meeting on 14th December. Both the

Kim Dodd from Portishead Youth Centre has been working very hard over the past year to launch Portishead’s own Youth Council and this has finally been achieved.

Georgina Bell and Kimberly Phiri, both students at Gordano School, attended the last Town Council meeting to tell us about their progress and some of the things the Youth Council would like to achieve. The Youth Council consists of 11 students who have met to discuss the needs of young people in the town.

They are currently hoping to introduce a Portishead Student Discount Card. This initiative is being supported by a number of businesses in the town and Georgina and Kimberly hope to be in a position to issue these cards in the near future.

Council notice boards This is going to be considered at the next Recreation and Works Committee meeting on 23rd November and then brought to the next full Town Council meeting on 14th December.

Portishead Porters John Alan and Joyce Cooper attended the Town Council meeting on 12th October to explain what they do. This is another voluntary organisation providing an excellent hospital car service for those without their own transport, at a cost of just 40p per mile.

Patients make a request via their Health Centre for the service which operates 7 days a week.

This means for example that a return trip to Southmead costs £14. Last year they made 2032 journeys which was a 6% increase on the previous year. The service is very popular so, in spite of having 50 drivers, they are constantly looking for new ones.

Pride in Portishead As you may be aware this is the group which helps keep Portishead tidy with its regular litter picking sessions. The next one will be on Sunday 4th December from 10-12 on Newlands Hill, and then afterwards at The Ship for soup where there will be a discussion about the litter picking programme for 2017.

New website Replacing the old, rather dated website has been something that a number of Town Councillors, including Councillor Marilyn Koops, have been working towards for some time. So we are very proud to announce that finally our new website is now up and running.

Celebrating a year of giving In October Portishead Rotary Club celebrated a year of supporting the Clevedon & District Foodbank in partnership with Sainsbury’s.

C

ustomers at the store in Portishead have contributed to the Foodbank scheme so generously that in the last twelve months they have filled 36 of the large, deep supermarket trolleys. Support has been so good that the large Foodbank box requires emptying every fortnight. It is full of foods and other essential items desperately needed by those people less fortunate and who are experiencing hard times.

John Sleight, Senior Vice President of Portishead Rotary and the scheme coordinator said: “Even in these financially challenging times our community are being so kind and generous in wanting to help those in need.”

Pauline Rayner, Public Relations Ambassador from Sainsbury’s said: “Our partnership has been a huge success, we are delighted to support Portishead Rotary and the Clevedon & District Foodbank.

We are well aware that there are families struggling and we want to help.”

Memory Cafe walk in aid of Alzheimers

Members of the Memory Cafe run by Portishead Rotary walked four miles to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

A

total of £505 was raised through member sponsorship which will be used to further research into the condition, which is so indiscriminate as to who it affects.

Walk organiser Pat Byles, pictured in the middle of the group, said: “The support from the Memory Cafe was just great and we were so pleased that so many members took part.

ark Stallard who founded the company 10 years ago and presented Youth Centre manager Alan Rowe with the cheque said: “I am a great believer in giving back to the local community so my business has always made an annual donation to a good cause in the community, however as we are celebrating 10 years I wanted to make it a substantial donation this year.

He said: “The centre had a £1 million redevelopment five years ago but as a well-used, seven days a week facility, we are reaching the point where things need renewing; however obtaining the funds to do this is proving challenging.

In recent months Portishead Youth Centre has stepped up its fundraising initiatives with the 50 Year Appeal which aims to raise £5,000 by the end of the year, and the launch of a new ‘Friends’ group which also aims to raise £5,000.

Since North Somerset Council withdrew funding for general youth work in 2012, the centre has had to rely on profits from its day time use, grant aid and fundraising activities to survive. It is currently running at a small loss and it is hoped that the fundraising will generate the additional funds it needs.

In addition to making his donation to the 50 Year Appeal, Mark is keen to forge strong links with Portishead Football Club, of which he has been elected chairman.

He added: “I can see a positive connection between the facilities of the youth centre and the football club and hope that the two organisations can work together to benefit the young people living in Portishead. We are all very lucky to have such facilities and I feel very strongly that we should make the most of them.”

ocal modern jive class Portishead LeRoc held a charity dance event on Saturday 12th November which drew dancers from across the South West and raised an amazing £1,819.84 for the Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

For the ninth year running the fabulous 14-piece funk, soul, disco, rock and blues band ‘Bring Down the House’ kept everyone on the dance floor all night and left them hollering for more.

Heather Parsons, owner of Portishead LeRoc and organiser of the event, said: “This dance is one of the highlights of our year and we are delighted to have raised so much money for the charity. To celebrate the hospice’s 25th anniversary we set ourselves what seemed quite a mad target of collecting 25 raffle prizes worth at least £25 each.

Thanks to the support of the class and local businesses we not only reached this target but surpassed it – our prizes had a total value of over £1,000! The dancers dug deep in their pockets and bought a tremendous number of raffle tickets, and the band was brilliant as always. With the support of other local businesses they were able to hold a number of events including a quiz night at local restaurant Hall & Woodhouse, a charity poker night and a static cycling challenge with Fox Cycling. Other activities included a company raffle, office tuck-shop, gift wrapping workshops and dressdown ‘onesie day’!

Polar Ocean Challenge crew dock

in Portishead

A team of adventurers returned to Bristol Harbour on 20th October after successfully completing their mission to circumnavigate the North Pole anticlockwise.

O

n 22nd June, their boat ‘Northabout’ locked out from Portishead Quays Marina to make its journey and on 18th October the marina welcomed the weary crew once again on their way back to Bristol.

The expedition, known as the Polar Ocean Challenge, was devised as a way to increase Arctic climate change awareness. The completion of the circumnavigation of the North Pole in a single summer season is highly significant as many years ago this would have been almost impossible due to impeding sea ice. Due to climate changes in the area the NE and NW passages are clear enough of sea ice to allow a boat through but the voyage remains testing by anybody’s standards.

Expedition leader David Hempleman-Adams said: “I see this possibility to circumnavigate the Arctic as one I wanted to take despite the risks associated with it in order to increase

the world’s attention on the effects of Arctic climate change.

“Permanent irreversible change in the sea ice landscape of the Arctic seems inevitable.

This will/ is already having global economic political, social and environmental implications. A significant change in my lifetime.”

During the expedition the crew collected compelling evidence to show the severity of ice melt in the area. It is hoped that even if nothing can be done about the warming seas, the journey will at least contribute to a conversation about how to navigate the future of the Arctic in a responsible way for the good of the local communities and wildlife.

Channel swim for charity

Lily swam a distance equivalent to that from Dover to Calais at Portishead’s Parish Wharf pool – that’s 1,416 lengths.

Lily raised an amazing £2,300 for Aspire, a charity which helps people who have been paralysed by spinal cord injury. They assist with finding accessible housing and providing everyday essential items such as wheelchairs and computers, which help people to live independently.

Lily’s dad Tom had a spinal cord injury 24 years ago and is a wheelchair user so Lily is very aware of the day-today challenges that someone in a wheelchair faces and she wants to help other people in this situation.

Freddie

This season’s Gordano Sharks U9’s rugby team consists of 50 players, a fantastic set of parents and an honorary 51st player by the name of Freddie De Gennaro.

F

reddie is severely disabled and suffers from various conditions, including ketotic hypoglycaemia, autism, complex epilepsy and Mucolipidosis Type 3 – a progressive and extremely rare genetic metabolic disease that affects the bones, joints and growth.

Last season, the team learned of Freddie and his story touched the hearts of the children, parents and coaches. Everyone agreed that alongside the fundraising which is done for the team and for the end of season tour, they wanted to do something to help Freddie and his family.

So on the first weekend in October, the U9’s

embarked on two days of activities to raise money for both the team and for Freddie.

The weekend began with bag-packing in Sainsbury’s, where the staff and customers were all happy to chat to the children and learn about Freddie and the rugby team. In the evening, the parents all enjoyed a night of fun and dancing at Venga, the highlight of which was an auction and a raffle. Then, on a beautifully sunny Sunday the children took part in a 6 Nations Fun Day at the rugby club.

The players all represented a national team and the parents dressed up in support. This was another successful day with some fantastic rugby on show, loads of fun and more money raised.

Over the course of the weekend the team raised approximately £3,000, £1,684 of which

will go to Freddie and his family. The plan is to buy a new epilepsy monitor and a specially adapted sensory swing for the garden, which Freddie will love. The U9’s have further plans to raise even more money for the team and for Freddie over the remainder of the season.

The U9’s would particularly like to thank the staff and customers at Sainsbury’s who made Saturday such an enjoyable and successful day, the owners and staff at Venga and Macron Store Bristol who supplied the children with their 6 Nations T-Shirts.

Portishead runner honoured

en Smith, who successfully completed 401 marathons in as many days, has received a Pride of Britain award in recognition of his amazing dedication.

To date, the 401 Challenge has raised a mammoth £305,535 for anti-bullying charities Kidscape and Stonewall. People all over the country got behind Ben’s challenge, particularly those in his hometown of Portishead, and it is hoped that the recognition at the Pride of Britain awards will give momentum to Ben’s next project; the 401 Foundation.

Having been bullied at school Ben suffered from depression for many years. The 401 Challenge was all about raising awareness of bullying and as well as running Ben visited over 100 schools to spread the message.

The 401 Foundation will follow on from this and offer grantbased support to grass roots projects which aim to build self-esteem and confidence and tackle mental health and selfdevelopment issues for all ages.

Parents’ Group

re-launches with new name

An independent group that provides parents of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) a means to voice their concerns with local authorities and service providers, has changed its name.

P

reviously known as ‘Our Voice Counts’, the parent participation forum has relaunched as ‘North Somerset Parent Carers’, a name designed to better reflect the group’s core values.

Guy Kingston who heads the group said: “Working in isolation to get the service or help your child needs can be a lonely job.

“As parents and carers of children with disabilities or additional needs, we know making your voice heard can sometimes feel like trying to achieve the impossible. But by coming together and acting as one we can make a huge difference.”

Guy says the first objective of the name change is to make sure all parents in North Somerset who have SEND children between the ages of 0-25 know that the group is there.

He added: “There are around 5,000 children with disabilities and additional needs currently living in the county. We want to grow our membership so parents feel they are not alone and have a channel to voice any questions or concerns they may have.

“The group is run by parents who understand what other parents and carers are going through. Our role is to represent parents’ views to service commissioners, providers and decision makers. Membership is free and people can be involved as much or as little as they want.

One of the first events being organised by the group is a forum on November 30 where parents can meet North Somerset SEND decision makers, including heads of department from education, health and social care. Further details can be found on the groups’ Facebook page or website.

Guy added: “We plan to hold numerous forums and events where parents and carers can meet other families and find out about local services and have a say on how things are affecting them.

“Any concerns will be put directly to

commissioners and those responsible for service provision in the North Somerset area and we will make a big difference to how these services are run.”

If the other parent does not agree to their child being relocated then an application will have to be made to the court.

International vs internal relocation

Welfare of the child is paramount

Until recently courts have distinguished between applications to move a child abroad and those to relocate a child within the UK. A presumption had emerged that applications to move within the UK would be granted so long as:

When a court is deciding whether to grant a relocation application, they will now consider only two principles: a) the welfare of the child and b) proportionality.

•

the move was not intended to frustrate contact with the other parent;

•

sensible arrangements (e.g. accommodation, schooling, childcare and employment) had been made; and

•

regular, sustainable and quality contact with the other parent could be maintained.

If the remaining parent wished to block the move then it was for them to establish ‘exceptional circumstances’ as to why the relocation should be prevented.

Impact on the child In 2015, the Court of Appeal acknowledged that a move to say Cornwall from Newcastle can have as great an impact on a child and their family life as an international move to a country such as Spain. It went on to clarify that applications to relocate should be dealt with in exactly the same manner regardless of the destination.

Re-launch for

hospice shop

T

he Vintage Room at St Peter’s Hospice shop in Portishead has been relaunched and now offers twice the amount of vintage goodies.

The re-launch is particularly significant in light of the burglary which took place in September, when thieves took several hundred pounds in cash and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the building.

Despite setbacks, The Vintage Room looks set to go from strength to strength, which is good news for shoppers and the future of the hospice.

Portishead shop manager, Sue Cox, said: “Following the recent

break-ins at the shop, which cost the charity thousands and really upset our staff, it is wonderful to be celebrating something positive and showing success in the face of adversity.

The opening saw BBC’s Jemma Cooper cut the ribbon and staff get into the spirit with vintage attire.

The department, which opened back in January, has proven to be so popular that managers decided to dedicate the whole first floor of the High Street shop to vintage goods, with one room for clothes and accessories and the other for homeware. The bridal section is now located in Nailsea.

long lasting, very potent toxin that can cause death in dogs and other animals.

Initially, the dog will develop abdominal pain and vomiting which may contain blood. The vomit in most cases will contain substantial amounts of chocolate, giving it a very characteristic smell.

The dog may be restless, drooling saliva and could have difficulty standing or walking.

Increased thirst is also common.

In more severely affected dogs, there is an increased rate of breathing, muscle tremors, or rigidity. Eventually, the dog may develop convulsions and die.

In the majority of cases, the symptoms occur within a few hours, but it has been known to be delayed for as long as 24 hours.

If you discover your dog has eaten chocolate, contact your vet immediately, whatever the quantity, and whatever the time of day or night – do not wait for symptoms to begin.

If you can get your dog to the vet within an hour of eating the chocolate, there’s a good chance that they can be saved.

Drugs can be given to induce vomiting, emptying the stomach before the chocolate toxins have had time to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

If treated early enough, the outlook is generally quite good and there should be no long term ill effects from the poisoning.

Countdown to Christmas Delicious festive feast at The Rudgleigh

I

t might be a tad early for a Christmas meal, but with December almost upon us thoughts turn to all things turkey and Christmas pudding.

With this in mind, the team at Gordano Living were invited down to be the first to try the new Christmas menu at The Rudgleigh Inn, on Martcombe Road, Easton in Gordano – and it did not disappoint.

Owner of the popular pub, John Lincoln and head chef Marc, John’s son, have come up with a delicious menu that went down a treat with all of us.

We plumped for the parsnip and chilli soup and the cranberry and brie puffs – sweet cranberries and creamy brie cheese in handmade puff pastry cases with a side salad - for starters and the flavours were absolutely delightful. The third starter on offer is venison terrine, with a mix of green peppercorn and red onion marmalade.

For the main course, most of us went for the turkey roulade, which was a turkey breast stuffed with sausage and sage, rolled and wrapped in bacon, and served with roast potatoes, mixed roast carrots, parsnips, swede, red onion and gravy. We all agreed that it was fantastic and offered a nice twist on the traditional Christmas dinner.

Others tried the 8oz porterhouse steak and the salmon en croute, which were equally as tasty. The fourth main is Mediterranean vegetable wellington.

The three course meal is rounded off with three delicious desserts – mini Christmas pudding, baked cranberry and orange cheesecake and tiramisu.

The popular pub has really come up trumps with this festive menu with a difference. Along with the traditional turkey and Christmas pudding, the starters and desserts have a wonderful festive feel to them and the food was enjoyed by all.

ortishead charity calendars for 2017 are now on sale at High Street stationer Morgan Westley. The calendars feature photographs from around the town, including beautiful views of the Marina and the Lake Grounds.

The calendars are always a firm favourite and bring in money for Portishead in Bloom and the Christmas Lights Committee, two organisations who between them do such a magnificent job of keeping the town looking good all year round.

Matt Westley said: “We have been producing the calendars for nine years now and they remain popular. A large proportion of them go overseas to Portishead ex-pats. It’s a nice reminder of back home.”

ith December almost here it’s time to think about getting your Christmas tree up.

Of course some go for the artificial look, but if you are one of those who think nothing beats a real one, then it’s time to get cracking and find the perfect tree for your house.

Here are some steps and tips to help you find the right one and get the best out of it during the festive period.

Decide what type of tree you want. Norway spruces are the traditional Christmas tree, while Nordmans, Fraser Firs, Nobles and Blue Spruces are varieties which are known to hold their needles much better.

Make sure that you buy a fresh tree. A good healthy tree should have fresh looking and flexible needles and when tapped only a few fresh green needles should fall.

Ask the retailer when and where the tree was cut from. The longer it has been cut the more chance it will not be as fresh. British trees tend to be cut later due to distance to travel.

Any tree you buy should be out of its net so you can see what you’re getting. If you are not going to put your tree up straight away then make sure you store it in a cool, dry place. When it is time to take it inside, saw off an inch of the trunk which opens up the pores in the bark.

Try and place the tree away from heat sources such as fires and radiators and keep your Christmas tree stand topped up with water.

After all that hard work you can get on with the best part - decorating it.

Choral Society

T

he first concert of the exciting 2016-17 season will be held on 3rd December in Gordano School’s New Hall.

Accompanied by Portishead Sinfonia, the choir will be performing Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, one of the greatest choral works of the 20th century, with the soprano Eloise Routledge. Eloise will also be performing a selection of operatic arias by Verdi, Puccini and Bizet.

The choir will also be singing a selection of Christmas music including three carol arrangements written by musical director Jonathan Palmer. Every season Jonathan writes three carol arrangements for the choir and this year they are Deck the Hall with Boughs of Holly, Silent Night and God Rest You Merry Gentlemen.

Looking ahead to the new year the season continues on 18 March 2017 with ‘A Classical Celebration’, featuring music by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert.

ortishead Film will be screening Carol which was nominated for six Oscar awards and is an adaption of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price of Salt.

Therese Belivet is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage.

As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.

One-Arm Dumbbell Rows

Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides advice for those who work out. This month he talks us through One-Arm Dumbbell Rows.

F

or many, the lower back is a limiting factor with two-arm row movements, such as bent-over rows. For this primary reason, one-arm dumbbell rows are a popular and convenient choice.

During the exercise, a bench (or similar) is used to lean on with the hand not in use, in order to avoid stress on the lower back and bridge the row stance.

The knee on the same side is often placed on the bench, also. While I advocate improving lower back strength, so that it’s less of a limiting factor during lifts, I do very much like the one-arm dumbbell row exercise.

Taking the lower back limiting factor out of the equation, it often means that gym-goers will go “heavy” with one-arm dumbbell rows; it can be a bit of an ego lift.

Lifting too much usually shows with momentum evident in twisting of the torso and excessive movement around the shoulder.

These are fine, within reason, to achieve a new high lift; however, keeping the torso stationary and the shoulder supported, allows for permanent tension on the lats, the major muscles of the back.

This is more conducive to achieving the desired effect of working the correct muscles (lats, rhomboids and lower fibres of the traps), whereas excessively cheating the lift will quite often be felt elsewhere, such as arms, forearms or rear delts.

In an attempt to get a better “feel” for the lift, try dropping the weight and perform the exercise at a slow tempo. I was taught to treat it like a controlled sawing motion, which worked for me.

Also, be conscious of your mechanics and where you’re pulling the weight from and to; despite not being the most efficient path, pulling at a slight angle may be more comfortable and engaging.

These are exciting times in the world of computing with the latest Virtual Reality (VR) equipment starting to hit the shops. But what is VR, and is it relevant to you?

V

irtual reality is an immersive experience - once you put on the headset you are transported to another location and because of the movement and positional sensors you really feel like you are there.

Imagine being able to explore the Pyramids at Giza without ever leaving your own home, or roaming the surface of Mars, the only limit with VR is your imagination.

It is hard to describe the feeling of presence that you get with VR, but because your movements are tracked in real time you immediately lose all sense of your immediate surroundings as your brain is tricked into believing what your eyes are seeing. VR really has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

In the past VR has had its problems, many of the original systems caused motion sickness and headaches but I am glad to say that today’s systems have done away with these problems.

VR hardware comes in many shapes, sizes and prices. At the cheap end of the market are headset adaptors for smartphones; these are great for experiencing VR in its simplest form but they don’t even come close to the truly immersive experience available on the high end headsets.

Currently the best equipment available is the Oculus Rift headset and the HTC Vive, both offer true VR with full movement tracking and can be used with a wide variety of VR software.

My personal favourite, and the most expensive, is the HTC Vive, it comes with twin hand controllers that really add to the sense of presence and make it great for 3D games.

Traditionally estate agents’ housing stock increases during the spring as vendors put Christmas behind them and resolve to make a house move in the New Year.

There are, however, benefits to purchasing property during the cooler months and you may find yourself getting a good deal.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is supporting the national Fire Kills campaign to encourage people to test their smoke alarm.

F

irefighters are reminding people to test their smoke alarm because they can only save lives if they work.

Smoke alarms provide a warning that fire has broken out and could give occupants of a house vital extra minutes to escape, especially at night.

Just two or three breaths of toxic smoke from a fire can cause a person to lose consciousness or even die.

Between April 2015 and March 2016 AF&RS attended 539 house fires. There was no smoke alarm fitted in 185 (34%) of these, however this has improved by 7% compared with last year where 41% of homes

had no smoke alarm.

AF&RS Group Manager for Risk Reduction, Matt Peskett, said: “Smoke alarms really are unsung heroes, activating at the first sign of fire and giving occupants time to escape, especially at night.

“The alarms should be tested regularly to check the batteries are working. It takes just a few seconds but could save the lives of you and your family in a house fire.”

During the colder months, it’s important to ensure that you and your car are prepared.

Batteries are more likely to be faulty during colder weather, check out last month’s magazine for information about keeping your battery performance at its best.

It is important to ensure that your tyres have a reasonable tread during the winter months. We recommend a minimum of 3mm tread to help with the grip on the road. You can change your tyres to winter tyres which are made from an alternative rubber that gives better grip with the change in weather and conditions on the road.

Antifreeze can save your engine from breaking

down on those cold mornings. It protects the engine and often will stay working as low as -30 degrees; we don’t get that in England so you will be fine!

Ensure your visibility is clear, make sure your windscreen is clear inside and out and keep any snow / dirt away from the windscreen to maintain visibility.

If you have snow on your roof, be sure to remove it so it doesn’t fall onto your windscreen. Wiper blades should be in good condition to ensure that your screen is kept

clean and clear.

I’m

looking at what to order for my employees for their Christmas presents. Is there any advice you have for me?

I don’t want my employees to pay tax or National Insurance on their gifts- or the hassle of any extra admin.

A:

If you buy your employees a seasonal gift such as a joint of meat or a box of chocolates, then this would be deemed ‘trivial’ and therefore, there are no reporting requirements and nor would any tax or National Insurance be triggered.

Since 6th April 2016, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will accept a benefit is trivial if it satisfies these conditions: 1 The cost of providing the benefit does not exceed £50 (or the average cost per employee if a benefit is provided to a group of employees and it is impracticable to work out the exact cost per person); 2 The benefit is not cash or a cash voucher; 3 The employee is not entitled to the benefit as part of any contractual obligation (including under salary sacrifice arrangements); and 4 The benefit is not provided in recognition of particular services performed by the employee as part of their employment duties For more generous gifts, the cash equivalent must be taxed via the payroll, form P11D or a Pay As You Earn Settlement Agreement (PSA). With the first two options, tax and National Insurance will be triggered and will be deducted from the employee. However, with a PSA the employer agrees to settle their liability.
