ell autumn is well and truly here and winter is just around the corner but there is just as much going on in and around Portishead as there was through the summer. Once again it has been difficult to include everything but we have done our best.

The team has thoroughly enjoyed sharing your preparations for Guy Fawkes Night and dare I say it, yes, Christmas too. Apologies if it seems a bit too early to be mentioning Christmas but the fairs and shopping evenings have started and the shops are now filling their shelves with goodies ready for the festive season.

FULL BRAKE FLUID CHANGE REN Brake fluid is hygroscopic. This means that it will readily absorb moisture. Moisture in your brake fluid does two things. When the brake fluid becomes hot under hard braking, the water in the brake fluid boils.

Portishead awarded gold for ‘In Bloom’ awards

V

olunteers from Portishead in Bloom have brought the gold medal home from the South West in Bloom contest for the sixth year running.

At the 2013 awards ceremony in Truro, Cornwall, not only was Portishead awarded gold, it was also awarded the St Bridget Cup for being the best town in its class.

On top of that, 13 neighbourhood awards were given to the town, two of which were named outstanding.

Portishead in Bloom member Angela Cooper said: “It’s a fantastic result and very well deserved. Come rain or shine, so many people work very hard to make the town look its best and these results make it all worthwhile.”

Sandy Tebbutt said: “I am delighted we retained our gold medal status and won so many neighbourhood awards. Winning

the St Bridget cup is the ‘icing on the cake’.

We faced stiff competition from towns like Yeovil, Newquay and Exmouth, so to be judged the best in our class is a terrific achievement.”

The cup will be presented at the group’s annual general meeting at the Folk Hall on November 15 at 7.30pm.

Community News Portishead Porters Need You… Portishead Remembrance arlier this year Portishead Activities Porters celebrated 20 years but

E

the group is in desperate need of additional volunteers. Many of the volunteers that make up Portishead Porters are nearing 80 years of age and feel it is time to hang up their keys so more drivers are needed.

Portishead Porters organise and run a hospital car service for patients from both the Portishead Health Centre and the Harbourside Family Practice - transporting them to and from hospital appointments.

Many of the growing number of elderly patients needing the services of the oncology unit and other out-patient departments rely heavily on the Porters’ services. A stress free journey with no parking complications can ease the physical and emotional worries of any appointment.

There are currently 45 drivers and twelve co-ordinators. Once an available driver had been matched with a patient in need of transport the driver collects the patient from their home and then waits at the hospital until they are ready to be taken home.

Portishead Porters would like to hear from any drivers willing to give up a few hours a month to help. Call Vera Sanders on 01275 814002 for more information.

his year the Portishead Royal British Legion (RBL) and the Portishead Town Band have joined forces to mark the Remembrance period.

Portishead Town Band will once again lead the Remembrance parade on Sunday, November 10 from Stoke Road to St Peter’s Church at 10.20am, following a two year absence.

The two organisations are also joining together to host a concert during the Remembrance tide period on Sunday, November 3 at 2.30pm at Somerset Hall at which Jemma Cooper will be compere. The afternoon will consist of light music and favourite songs. Tickets are £5 from White Cot Stores in St Peter’s Road or Fowlers Florist in High Street. Proceeds will go to the Poppy Appeal and Town Band.

There will also be acts of Remembrance on Sunday, November 3 at 12.30pm at St Peter’s Church Memorial Garden and on Monday, November 11 at 10.50am in Portishead Precinct.

Unique Portishead Family Wedding 65 years on!

O

n Friday the 27th September 2013 at St. Peter’s Church in Portishead Matthew Want and Lucy Robbins were married 65 years and two days after Matt’s Grandparents, Norman and Doreen Want were married, also at St. Peter’s Church, Portishead.

The two photographs are of Norman and Doreen on their wedding day outside the main door of St. Peter’s Church on the 25th September 1948 and again with Matt and Lucy at the same location this September.

A lifelong resident of Portishead Norman was brought up by his grandparents, his grandfather was a Chief Petty Officer at the Nautical School which is now Fedden

Festival on the Quay success

his year’s Festival on the Quay at Portishead marina raised a fantastic £1,000 for the Portishead lifeboat. Quay Marinas Ltd and The Galley, who were joint organisers of the 2013 festival, proudly presented the lifeboat team with a cheque for the sum before sitting down to start planning next year’s event, which they are aiming to make even bigger and better!

Portishead Christmas Lights

ortishead is lucky enough to have one of the best Christmas lights displays in the south west, but when it comes to organising them, luck doesn’t come in to it. The festive illuminations are the result of all year round fundraising, successful grant applications, sponsorship and hundreds of hours of hard work by volunteers from members of our community.

Even when the lights are up, there is no let up for the committee of volunteers. They have to regularly patrol the High Street ensuring the lights remain intact, that health and safety regulations are being adhered to and replacing bulbs that have gone out, or worse still, those that are broken by vandals.

The lights stay on until the first week of January when volunteers rally round to take them all down again and carefully pack them in to storage.

Throughout the year, committee members are tasked with testing the lights and general maintenance, in addition to the ongoing fundraising.

If you can spare an hour or two to help put the lights up or take them down, or perhaps on ‘lights up’ day supply the volunteers braving the elements with cocoa or hot soup, please contact Barry on 844301, Jonathan on 843376 or Stuart on 399029.

ne of the main fundraising events for Portishead Christmas Lights is the annual Victorian Evening. On Friday 13th December, the High Street will be closed from around 6pm for the traditional street fair that dates back more than 30 years. The town centre will be full of stalls, rides and sideshows and people are asked to get in to the spirit of things and dress in Victorian costume (visitors included please). The shops stay open in to the evening and traders tempt customers with mulled wine, mince pies and other festive fayre. Charities, community groups and of course Santa all have a presence during the evening. Street entertainment is provided by singers and a variety of musicians and there is usually a dance display from members of Portishead Youth Club.

Bookings for stalls at the Victorian Evening are now invited at a cost of £15 each.

A Golden Mile of Christmas Lights

ortishead’s Christmas lights will be extended once again this year, providing the town with a full mile of illuminations.

Portishead’s very own ‘golden mile’ will now begin at Portishead Youth Centre in Harbour Road, running the full length of the High Street down to the one-way system at the end.

The lights will also extend in to the Waitrose piazza.

The lights will be put up by volunteers on Sunday November 25, ready for the official switch on, which will take place at The Precinct in the High Street at around 6.30pm.

The section of road between the Wyndham Way/ High Street junction and the High Street/Combe Road junction will be closed for a short period of time to allow this to happen.

This year the lights will be switched on by invited guests from within the community including PCSO Debbie Charman. Popular Debbie organises the crowning of the carnival royal family each year in Portishead and has done so for more than 12 years.

She has also spent many years organising and helping at the annual senior citizens’ supper in the town.

The ‘switch on’ ceremony will see Santa travel in his sleigh through the High Street to The Precinct. He and his helpers will be happy to take letters from children who want to tell him how good they have been and what they are hoping for this Christmas.

Local celebrities and VIPs will then join Debbie and Santa on stage for the official countdown that DAVID PLAYFORD & CO everyone present will SOLICITORS be invited to join in.

Update from Portishead Railway Group Written by vice chairman Colin Howells

I

t was good to see so many Portishead Railway Group members and supporters at the Portishead Flower Show in the summer and to hear so many memories and stories of their local railway experiences.

Much progress has been made this year towards the re-opening of the line from Portishead into Bristol. Earlier in the year

we saw the track between Portishead and Pill cleared, ready to be inspected. The line needed to be cleared in March so as not to interfere with the wildlife breeding season. We are satisfied that the parts of the track which required inspection have now been inspected.

Consultation took place on three options for the site of the proposed new railway station. More than 140 responses were received by North Somerset Council and we expect the result of the consultation to be made public very soon.

The four local councils which form the West of England Partnership, North Somerset, Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire have agreed to spend £1.3 million to progress the MetroWest project and a project manager has now been appointed.

North Somerset Council has also set up its own “Portishead Rail Services” web page.

The Department for Transport and Network Rail are expected to agree the

funding for phase one of MetroWest which fundamentally is the re-opening of the Portishead line into Bristol, and additional services between Bristol and Bath. This funding is expected to be in the region of £49m.

GRIP is the Guide to Railway Investment Projects used to define and manage the various stages of a railway project. There are eight stages in total. GRIP studies are currently being carried out on the parts of phase one that were not covered by earlier studies which concentrated on the Portishead line. Early next year these studies will be combined with the Portishead studies to progress the MetroWest scheme to GRIP three.

hree lucky Portishead residents have won prizes in a draw for the X2 and X3 Portishead to Bristol bus service.

fter having her own baby, following 10 years of teaching foreign languages, Natalie Bond, decided to set up multilingual baby and toddler music groups.

In her classes traditional nursery rhymes are sung in French, German and Spanish, using a variety of different actions for co-ordination, instruments and soft toys for visual and auditory stimulation and other props. Each week there is a little bit of language learning for the adults and older children too, with some basic phrases and a short story.

This month sees the launch of Bond Lingua sessions at the Folk Hall in Portishead. Bubs

Photography Session Opens Clifton High School Celebrations

wildlife photography workshop, hosted

by Bristol-based photographer, marine biologist and underwater camera man, Tom Walmsley, today kicked off Clifton High School’s week-long celebration of science, art, environmental, literary and musical events.

The programme of 19 events showcased the work of its pupils and wider school community.

Round two for free school

he Village Quarter Parent Group in Portishead has submitted its second application to open a free school in the town. The group submitted an application in January and made it through to the final round of the selection process before being turned down. After taking advice from the Department for Education and running an online survey to see what action Village Quarter and Port Marine families wanted, a new application for funding has been put forward to the Government for consideration. Three sites in the Port Marine and Village Quarter areas have been identified as possible sites for a new school, but if the group is successful, the final decision for location will be down to a Government representative.

Parents say they are still not convinced that the expansion of St Peter’s Primary School, which will be complete by 2014, will provide enough reception class places to meet

the needs of Portishead over the next few years. They also say they want more choice when it comes to selecting schools for their children. As a free school, the Village Quarter School would not be controlled by the local education authority. The application says the free school will deliver world class education. It includes proposals for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to be introduced from the early years foundation stage, the teaching a second language from year one and applied creativity for all.

If funding is agreed the school will open with two reception classes and a mixed year one and year two class in September 2014.

“I love Bob Crooks’ new glass scent bottles inspired by the hula hoop shape and on the art side we are really excited to be showing a Bristol based painter whose work gives a nod to tradition, but we’ve given it some really contemporary framing and it looks fantastic.”

orth Somerset Arts is delighted to announce the appointment of its new Development Officer - Fiona Davies.

The role that has received funding from the Arts Council of England is the first of its kind for the artist led organisation.

Fiona has taken up the position with a view to significantly increasing the role the arts play within the county.

North Somerset Arts organises and promotes a whole range of events and activities to provide greater public access to the wide range of artistic talent the county has to offer.

The Development Officer’s position marks a new era for the organisation, which had previously been entirely volunteer-led.

History in the High Street

P

ortishead has a rich mixture of shops in the High Street. Once upon a time all of the businesses were independently run and now, although not all of them, many remain independent, a number of which are family run businesses.

The Coles family, which runs Tudor Garage at 51 High Street, has run businesses in Portishead High Street for 118 years.

Thomas Coles founded his haulage business in 1895 at 62 High Street, which

was until recently Catherine’s Patisserie, with a horse and cart running a daily carrier service to Bristol. He was one of the first people in Portishead to own his own car and lorry and saw potential in the repairing of motor vehicles and expanded his business and so instructed the building of Central Garage at the beginning of the High Street at Cabstand, where Gordano Ford now operates. He further expanded the businesses by adding a fleet of coaches and taxis.

After World War II Thomas’s son George took over the business expanding the haulage side of the business, adding furniture removal and tipper lorries working for the local quarries.

The entrepreneur then had Tudor Garage built in 1955 and moved the vehicle repairs to his new premises. He later sold his haulage business ending 60 years of

trading at 62 High Street.

George ran Tudor Garage with his son Brian and brother-in-law Robert Wheeler until he retired in the early 60s. Brian and Robert carried on the family business.

In 1970 they employed a secretary, Janet Tebbutt, who still works there today.

Brian’s nephew Martin Petty joined the work force as foreman in 1972 and in 1980 Brian’s son Vaughn started his apprenticeship. Martin and Vaughn formed a partnership in 1984 and took over the running of the workshop under the name of Tudor Car Care while Brian continued to run the forecourt.

Brian retired in 1990, when Martin and Vaughn took over the whole of Tudor Garage. They were joined by Vaughn’s wife Jane in 2003.

Martin’s son Jordan now also works for the company, as does his cousin Pete. This year Vaughn and Jane’s son Joe has joined the family firm as an apprentice, the fifth generation to join the company.

Tudor Garage certainly knows the true meaning of a ‘family run business’.

Countdown to Christmas Christmas Art Contest

arey’s framing workshop in Portishead High Street has launched a Christmas art competition. Entries are invited from under 18s to design a poster with the title ‘Christmas’. The posters must be drawn or painted and can be any size.

There are two categories one for those aged 12 and under and one for teenagers. The best entries will be displayed in the shop window in time for the Victorian Evening on Friday December 13. The winner of each category will have their poster professionally framed at the in-house workshop which has been successfully running at Carey’s for ten years. The winners and runners up will also receive a selection of art materials.

Entries should be submitted to Carey’s Home and Garden Centre at 17 High Street, Portishead before December 10.

bumper Christmas craft fair takes place at Portishead Youth Centre in Harbour Road on November 30 between 2-6pm. What’s On Highdown Firework Display

November 9 High Down Junior School’s firework display this year will be on Saturday November 9.

The annual event is a major fundraiser for the school and in recent years has helped to fund library books, play equipment and computers. The evening is organised by volunteers from the Friends of High Down Junior School, who on the night, are assisted by members of Portishead Lifeboat, which

also benefits from the money raised. The aerial display is professionally launched by Bristol-based Skyburst.

The large terraced grounds make this the perfect venue for a really memorable fireworks night. There will be refreshments available as well as the ever-popular ‘Glo Light’ stall.

Tickets are £4 each in advance or £6 on the night with under five’s free.

November 2 A group of local ladies are hoping to make a Christmas Fair at Tickenham Village Hall one of the best NSPCC fundraising events they have organised.

The Clifton and Redland District Committee was formed approximately 28 years ago when a group of young mums decided to do some voluntary work. They selected the NSPCC as their

beneficiary and formed a local committee.

With members of the committee now living in and around the Gordano Valley, this year they have chosen to hold their Christmas Fair in Tickenham and they want it to be bigger and better than ever before.

With an array of stalls, crafts and refreshments lined up, the ladies want to extend an invitation to everyone to join them at Tickenham Village Hall at 205 Clevedon Road, Tickenham, on Saturday November 2 between 10am and 4pm.

Entry is free and there is plenty of car parking.

There will be homemade jams, pickles, cakes, apple juice, Christmas cards, glass, textiles, ceramics, jewellery paintings, soaps, candles, chocolate second hand books, near new children’s books and puzzles. There will also be face painting and a giant hamper raffle.

November 2 to Saturday, November 16 to officially launch the arts and crafts gallery.

The Blue Room, which specialises in work by both established and new local artists, was reopened in August by Nailsea resident and businesswoman Sharon Brown as a social enterprise designed to serve the community.

Ann Kelson, the exhibiting artist, is a mature student, a mother and the wife and carer of a disabled husband.

Although Ann’s Artist Ann Kelson work has featured in exhibitions in the South West and London, this is her first solo exhibition.

Anne is in her final year of a Drawing and Applied Arts Degree at the University of the West of England and the idea of the exhibition was born from Sharon’s desire to exhibit student artwork and Ann’s interest in exhibiting her conceptual art as well as her more traditional crafts.

The Ethics of Law: ‘Justice – does it exist?’

November 12 On Tuesday November 12 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm Tony Miles will be the speaker at the next Contemporary Ethics Forum at the Folk Hall, Portishead.

Mr Miles is a senior partner at Bobbett Macken Solicitors, former president of the Bristol Law Society and chair of the council at Trinity College, Bristol.

Mr Miles qualified as a solicitor in 1972 and has been a specialist criminal defence lawyer since 1980.

Many of us will have little direct contact with crime, the law or the criminal justice system but crime (or fear of crime) is a real concern for most people. Current ethical issues around the law and justice system will be explored in Mr Miles talk and there will be a time for open discussion following his presentation.

Contemporary Ethics Forums are a series of talks arranged by Portishead Church of England to address areas of concern in today’s society. Tickets for the Forum are free from late October call the church office on 846230.

Even the most fragile of items need cleaning and here are a few handy hints for keeping fragile and valuable items looking at their best...

• Use a baby’s hair brush to get into the fiddly areas of delicate items, this can be moistened to make it extra effective and has the benefit of being super soft so very easy to use carefully. A toothbrush is also handy and much smaller for tiny items.

• Use a mixture of vinegar and a small handful of dry rice to clean the inside of vases that are too slim to get your hand inside. Swish the mixture around the vase in a circular motion until all of the build-up has been removed.

• To store silver which is not regularly used, wrap it in bleach free tissue paper tightly, ensuring all parts of the piece are covered and well wrapped.

Keep the parcel in a dry, clean place till its next use. This will keep it shiny after cleaning, till the next time you need it.

• Make use of those little packets of silica gel that come inside shoe boxes and parcels by popping them in linen cupboards and anywhere where the items are not aired frequently and need to be kept dry. They absorb moisture from the air and are great at keeping damp at bay. Step 5 to selling your home: Choosing the right estate agent for the job

s I mentioned in ‘Step 1’, choosing the best estate agent for the job is as crucial as getting the price right In this step I will advise on how to go about choosing your agent and how to get the best value for money. This does not always mean getting the cheapest fee you can. The likely hood is that the best agent even at a reduced rate to their normal services may still settle on a higher percentage than an inferior company would accept.

Whether you live in a town or city it is a fact that 75% of buyers are likely to come from within a two to three mile radius of where they already live. With this in mind, choosing an agent from outside this parameter needs careful consideration as it may well reduce your chances of finding a buyer. Although it is true that most people search on the net for property, it is still the face to face contact that converts most potential buyers into viewers and without the viewers you are not selling! So my advice in the first instance is, stay local unless there is a proven reason not to.

If you live in a provincial town not far from a big city, such as Portishead to Bristol, then there are obvious advantages to having an agent in both areas. However my advice is never choose a city agent over a local

agent, but to work in conjunction with a local agent. It is quite likely that a local agent will already have a hot list of people wanting to buy homes in the area whereas, while a city agent may have some people looking in your area, he is more likely to need to market your property to draw the attention to new buyers.

If you decide to go with a local agent and a city agent your property may get broader coverage and will hit the 25% of potential buyers outside your local area, but remember these days, even local areas reach much wider markets.

I can speak first hand of local agents working with city agents; at Cliftons we have a very healthy relationship with most fringe agents in Bristol and for properties of a certain type, character or price we will agree to market them together on a split fee basis. However most vendors don’t feel the need for more than one agent and in my opinion sole agency is often the best policy, to start with anyway.

To decide which agent to choose I advise you to first become a fictitious buyer. Sign on with all your local estate agents as a buyer looking for a home just like yours, regardless to the type of home or area you are truly seeking. This is a way to see your agent in action first hand. You can

Moving Home see how they treat potential buyers and how they promote the properties on their books. See how they entice you to view the homes and how interested they are in you as a buyer. Note how long it takes them to come back to you for feedback for their vendor, if they encourage you to re-view the property or even make an offer.

See how enthusiastic they are and how comfortable you feel dealing with them from a buyer’s point of view. You will very quickly come to your own conclusions as to which companies to short list and invite to value your own property.

I suggest at this point you choose three agents. Ask them all to visit your property on the same day, but obviously not the same time! It’s always best if you are in a relationship to have both partners present and if possible ask friends or relatives to take the children out so that you can give the agents your full attention.

How enthusiastic do they appear about your home? How honest are they about its condition? What suggestion do they make to improve your chances of selling?

Do they take any details of your home?

Do they get behind your move and the reasons for it? How genuinely interested are they in you and where you’re going?

When it comes to selling themselves how passionate and sincerer do they appear and in giving their appraisal of your home, how do they corroborate their valuation?

Do they provide comparable evidence of past and present sales?

All these must be considered before you make your choice.

Be wary of high valuations just to win your favour, over valuing a property can result in lost viewers.

When it comes to fees are the agents fair and firm, rigid or willing to work for free?

Remember buying and selling and buying is often about negotiating, so those who are rigid on their own fee may be too blunt when negotiating on your behalf.

On the other hand, those who are willing to work for an exceptionally low fee may be lacking confidence in their own worth and may also negotiate just as weakly when obtaining a price for the sale of your property. Assess the agents’ sales abilities.

Those that are willing to talk and show some flexibility without compromising their own worth are most likely to have the sales skills to press for the best price for your property. When you part company with your potential agent, do they ask for

your business, just expect it or simply thank you for your time?

Don’t be pressured to decide at the time of the valuations to put your property to market there and then. Let all three agents give their pitch and then talk through their merits later. See how eager they are for your business. How quickly do they respond with a follow up letter or call? Do they attempt to entice you with a viewing from a hot buyer on their books or do they do nothing?

Once you have fully processed all the information you have collected you should be in a much stronger position to feel confident in your choice of agent and can agree an asking price. Make sure your property is looking sharp and everything is in order and you are ready to go to market.

t is difficult in these busy times, with instant communication; mobiles, texts, emails, twitter etc to realise how little we may meaningfully communicate to the one we love and have chosen to spend our lives with.

This exercise is one of the most powerful promoters of a good marriage or partnership by creating a space to communicate by simply ‘Talking and Listening’.

This is not superficial everyday chit chat but creating a space to be together without distraction and take turns to ‘talk and listen’.

When used regularly it improves teamwork and the sense that both people are contributing to the success of the relationship. The trick is to make a regular commitment to ‘talking and listening’ at a time that suits you both.

Seasonal affective disorder

S

easonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression, is a debilitating problem that interferes with the quality of life, especially during the autumn, winter and early spring.

Clinical symptoms that reappear regularly with the seasonal changes include lethargy, difficulty concentrating, depression, negative thoughts, elevated cravings for carbohydrates with corresponding overeating and weight gain, hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness), tiredness in the morning and diminished libido. Patients

typically become more anxious by the end of the summer as they anticipate the coming months, during which less sunlight is present and their symptoms return.

SAD responds well to traditional Chinese medicine.

When daylight is less, the level of serotonin, which helps nerve cells cooperate and affects mood, in the brain drops and the pineal gland secretes more melatonin (which puts a body to sleep).

Together they can trigger symptoms of SAD. Dr Li Lu explains: “In Chinese medical theory, winter is the time of “Yin”. Things are moving inward, daylight is declining and darkness is more dominant. The normal movement of life is slowing and declining. The “Yang” which is energetic, warming and outward moving aspects of the body is decreased.

These changes can cause the SAD. With acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine the symptoms of SAD can be reduced, the lifestyle can be changed and improved. The effect of this treatment has been proven by the World Health Organisation.”

Exercise of the Month: Walking Lunges

W

alking lunges are a favourite exercise of mine; you can perform them anywhere and the effects on your legs and bum can be felt almost immediately.

For these reasons, walking lunges are popularised by magazines and personal trainers worldwide, however, I feel they are widely demonstrated and performed incorrectly.

This is typically what we interpret or see performed in gyms and bootcamps: Keep your upper body straight (note: at 90 degrees to the floor on illustrations), with your shoulders back and relaxed and chin up, assume a split-stance and lunge, return

to start-position, then step forward on the opposite leg and repeat.

Suggestions to increase difficulty include adding weight and often, to perform an arm curl or alternating a one-arm shoulder press with said weight at the mid-position of the movement.

Firstly, is there any point at all in performing walking lunges over lunges if you are to simply return to a leg’s spread (split-stance) start-position and then STEP forward? No. Your start-position for walking lunges is with your legs side-by-side.

Initiate a lunge with your right leg. At the mid-position, your right leg should form a right angle.

Upon rising from the mid-position of the lunge on your right leg, the foot of your trailing leg (left) should meet/pass your

standing foot at the top-of-the-movement (start position), you then lunge forward on your left leg and continue to repeat on opposing legs for the desired number of repetitions.

This is walking lunges! One of the key benefits of walking lunges: the quadriceps (major muscles of your thigh), due to the increased load over your standing leg whilst returning from the mid-position to the start-position, remain fully-engaged for longer.

Where to Walk - The ‘Rat Run’ and Portbury Wharf

T

his walk is a little over three miles and starts on Harbour Road at its junction with Newfoundland Way. Take the track that descends immediately to your right as you enter Newfoundland Way. There are several sculptures along the path which form part of a puzzle.

This path is becoming known locally as “The Rat Run” because of the puzzle and the small black rat which welcomes you onto the path!

Walk alongside the rhyne until you emerge onto the path that runs adjacent to the coast. Turn right and continue on this path.

When you reach the first lagoon you will be entering what used to be called “The Ashlands”. For over 50 years the area was used to dump waste ash from the Power Station which was close by.

The developers of Port Marine cleared it all out and cleaned the land which was eventually renamed Portbury Wharf and handed over to Avon Wildlife Trust which now manages the nature reserve covering around 100 acres.

Go around the electricity substation and through a gate. Turn right and go through another gate – remember to close it behind you!

Follow the track which skirts around the edge of the Avon Wildlife Trust Portbury

Wharf Nature Reserve. Take a moment to look at the information boards located along the way. The path runs alongside a rhyne – be careful especially with young children!

Keep on this track until you reach a small incline at the top of which turn sharp left onto a grey path.

Follow this path until it emerges through a horse gate and small car park onto Wharf Lane.

Turn left and continue along Wharf Lane until you reach another gate. Use the small gate to the left to go though and enter a path between trees and shrubs.

You will pass the bird hide on your left. Keep walking until the path veers to the left and you have now gone almost full circle and are back at the electricity substation.

Retrace your steps until you reach “The Rat Run” where you can either walk back the same way that you came, or continue along until you reach the Marina.

In her spare time the 42-year-old helps run the animal rescue organisation HEART, which takes in unwanted pets, finds them temporary foster homes and then works hard to find permanent loving homes for them.

Sally says: “We have a lot of desperate kittens and

young cats that need some tender loving care at the moment and it’s heartbreaking when we can’t house them.”

Sally also runs a small pet care business. She explains: “I love working for the charity but I need to earn a living too, so I have combined my love of animals and the knowledge and experience I have, to run a small business that helps pet owners.”

Bonfire night tips from Vale Vets

F

or owners of anxious pets, bonfire night can be full of trepidation.

For some dogs fireworks and other loud noises cause real distress leading to unwelcome behaviour which, if untreated, can get worse over time. In extreme cases, noise phobia can require medication.

Signs of an anxious dog include trembling, panting, yawning, excessive blinking, pacing, hiding and salivating.

Here are some simple tips for anxious dogs on bonfire night: Draw the curtains but leave the light on to reduce flashes.

Dogs should be encouraged to hide when scared so provide a hiding place a few weeks before the event. He must have access to this place AT ALL TIMES which should include favourite toys, food, water bowl and bedding.

Take your dog for a good walk earlier in the day so that he is tired and relaxed. Let

him out for a toilet break in the garden, before the fireworks start and not during them.

Feed your dog a meal in the late afternoon that is rich in carbohydrate to help create a stodgy, sleepy effect.

Try to ignore the noises yourself and don’t acknowledge any signs of anxiety in your pet by either telling him off or comforting. Behave as normal, interacting with your dog or, if he is hiding, just leave him be.

If you are going out to a fireworks party and leaving your pet alone leave a radio playing.

You might also want to consider therapeutic supplements which have a calming effect. Vale Vets recommend a variety of these, they come in various forms including capsules, liquid, or a diffuser which releases pheromones into the air and can be picked up from the counter without seeing a vet.

Ceased employment and student loans

Q:

: I recently received a letter from the Student Loans Company querying my employment status, but my circumstances have not changed - I am still employed. What should I do?

A:

This sounds like a known issue with HMRC’s systems; a very small number of students’ employments have been incorrectly ceased. This has prompted HMRC’s systems to automatically inform the Student Loans Company (SLC)

Choosing the right web design agency

HMRC’s advice is to respond to the SLC saying you have not ceased employment or changed employer.

HMRC are now in the process of correcting their systems and are due to complete this within the next few weeks.
