Portishead must be extremely busy this month as once again we have received so many items for inclusion it has been difficult to cover everything.

We will all miss Portishead carnival this month but are looking forward to its return next year.

June kicks off the season of fairs and fetes, which will run alongside many other events in Portishead including the Longest Swim at the open air pool and the Portishead Open Gardens weekend, Portishead in Bloom’s biggest fundraising event of the year.

Thanks to the Christmas lights team the Portishead in Bloom flags are now adorning the High Street. These along with all the aforementioned activities well and truly mark the beginning of summer in Portishead.

Next month we will bring you news on more summer events including the raft race and waterside picnic, Portishead Flower Show and the community picnic at Jubilee Park.

I hope all dads out there have a great Father’s Day on June 21 and let’s hope for some sunshine too!

Longest Swim

P

ortishead Open Air Pool will once again be hosting the Longest Swim charity event to raise money for the Raj K Soni Legacy Fund.

Raj, a talented sportsman, was killed in a cycling accident in 2012, at the age of 18. In his memory his parents set up the fund to benefit under 21’s looking for financial help in sport or music, Raj’s two great passions.

Over the last two years the Fund has awarded £47,125 to 17 local charitable organisations and over £33,000 of this has been raised from its flagship Longest Swim community event.

This year’s event on Friday June19 is set to be bigger and better than ever before.

At 6.30am top-class swimmers in the area will enter the heated pool to conduct a 90-minute training session. For the balance of the day swimmers of varying standards and ages from eight to 80, will swim for 30

minutes to raise money for the fund. At 5.30pm some top-class swim talent will be on show in a relay race featuring a team of ex-Olympians and Internationals versus the supremely talented United Bristol Swim Club.

For the second year in a row The Rock Project, the UK’s premier school for children’s contemporary music tuition, will be one of the major partners for the event and will be showcasing local musicians in two sets, the first with their Juniors at 4.30pm and the second with their Seniors playing at 6pm.

Paella courtesy of Venga restaurant and tapas bar, plus barbecue and drinks will be on sale from 5.30pm, with 90% of all proceeds going to the charity and 10% to the Portishead Pool Community Trust. The event will run until 9.30pm.

reen fingered gardening enthusiasts will be showing off months of hard work during the Portishead Open Gardens event this month.

Hundreds of visitors are expected to explore the secrets of 15 hidden and private gardens which will be open to the public on Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7 between 10.30am and 5pm.

In addition to the flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables on display, there will be plenty of opportunity to indulge in refreshments throughout the weekend, with many gardens offering teas, homemade cakes and light lunches, not forgetting the Windibanks’ breakfast bacon butties!

Some gardens have breathtaking views while others come complete with domestic pets, hens and fish.

The weekend will be packed with a variety of attractions with activities in the gardens ranging from charity plant and book sales to music, art and craft exhibitions.

Portishead Open Gardens weekend is the main fundraising event for Portishead in

Bloom, the voluntary group that keeps the town decked in floral tributes all year.

The money raised from the weekend will go towards the valuable work the voluntary organisation carries out in the town, which has been recognised with the Gold Medal status, awarded to Portishead every year since 2008 by South West in Bloom.

Programmes detailing the individual gardens and events, including information about which gardens are flat, have easy access and parking facilities, are available in Morgan Westley and Season’s Florist in Portishead High Street, in other local shops or from Sandy Tebbutt at 45 Nore Road, Tel: 01275 843566. Easter Trail Winners Children described the Portishead Easter Trail as one of the highlights of their Easter holidays, so it was hardly surprising to see crowds gathering for the prize giving at SoleLution in Portishead High Street last month.

The annual trail is organised by the family footwear shop’s owner Tanya Marriott, to help celebrate Fit Feet week and to help promote the shops and other local businesses in the town.

Lots of prizes were handed out to trail participants and winners of other competitions Tanya had organised during the school holidays.

Tanya said: “I think we may have found a future star in Marnie Mae!” More than 150 people joined in the Fit Feet Week activities which raised money for both Children’s Hospice South West and Springboard Opportunity Group.

Swimathon Success A

round 500 swimmers aged from four to 80 years took part in this year’s Portishead Swimathon at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, swimming 5,913 lengths in total, which amounts to more than 91 miles.

The annual event, now in its 19th year, was organised by the Rotary Club of Portishead in collaboration with the management of Parish Wharf Leisure Centre.

Swimming in teams of six, representing local schools and a variety of different organisations, the swimmers swam in relay in 35 minute slots, raising funds for

charities through sponsorship.

All were noisily supported and encouraged by their friends and families at the poolside.

The principal charities to benefit this year are the Portishead RNLI Lifeboat and St Peter’s Hospice, with schools and local organisations also raising money for their own causes. The total amount donated will not be known until all the sponsorship money has been collected but thousands of pounds are expected to have been raised.

Rotarian Mollie Young, one of the organisers, said: “The generosity and community spirit shown by businesses and residents of Portishead and the surrounding areas in support of this event are overwhelming.

“All the costs incurred in promoting and staging the swimathon were met by donations from local businesses, enabling all the money raised by the swimmers to go directly to the selected charities and local projects.

80th Celebrations for RBL

ortishead Royal British Legion (RBL) Women’s Section celebrated its 80th anniversary in April.

The first meeting was held on April 12

1935 at The Albion in Bristol Road, organised

by Elsie Kitchen, Mrs Rudge and Amy Cook.

Amy’s daughter Joyce is a current member and has been for the past 68 years.

The group meets on the last Wednesday of each month at the Folk Hall in Portishead High Street and new members are welcome.

The 80th anniversary of the

group was celebrated with a glass of bucks fizz and a special cake.

he Rotary Club of Portishead treated a group of young people from the town to four exciting days at Barton Camp, Winscombe. The youngsters swam, went tobogganing, played a variety of challenging games and made friends with youngsters from other schools.

RNLI formally adopts Port

V

olunteers, original founders, friends and supporters of the Portishead Lifeboat Trust gathered at the town’s new lifeboat station in Pier Road for a historic occasion.

As the new boathouse was declared operational, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) flag was raised, signalling the formal adoption of the Portishead Lifeboat Trust by the RNLI. In 2011, trustees of the RNLI agreed, in principle, to pursue the adoption of The Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat from The Portishead Lifeboat Trust.

However, the RNLI were unable to do this until a suitable operational site had been determined and the requisite shore facilities put in place to enable an RNLI B class inshore lifeboat and its launching equipment to operate effectively.

Work commenced on a new lifeboat station next to Portishead marina in April 2014. After completing the build in 12 months, in all weathers and tidal conditions, contractors Andrew Scott handed over the lifeboat station into the care of the RNLI at the beginning of April 2015.

He said: “This marks the completion of many years of preparation and teamwork between the RNLI and Portishead Lifeboat Trust, plus an intense period of training and preparation at the new lifeboat station over the past two weeks, for the volunteers to adapt to the new launch and recovery site at various states of the tide.

“Huge credit to everyone involved with Portishead RNLI for all the dedication and commitment

they have shown during this extremely busy period, I am delighted to have such a fantastic team as part of the RNLI.” Mr Crane said: “This is an extremely momentous day for everyone at Portishead. While it has taken 12 months to build the new lifeboat station, it has been 20 years since the Portishead

ortishead Townswomen’s Guild is a thriving group with a busy programme throughout the year.

Newcomers and visitors are very welcome at their monthly meetings which take place on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Folk Hall in Portishead High Street.

In addition to the monthly meetings, which always include an interesting speaker or activity, there are coach trips, a social study group, lunches and much more.

Chairman Pat Rennie said: “We are a friendly bunch and welcome new members of any age. There is a misconception that the Townswomen’s Guild is for old people but that’s not the case, everyone here is young at heart and we would love to see some younger people join us with new ideas to help take us forward.”

25 years of twinning with the Netherlands

n April Portishead Twinning Association visited Den Dungen in The Netherlands.

It was twenty-five years since the first visit and coincided with the twenty fifth anniversary of the partnership between St Michielsgestel, a village in the same community council, and Buk, in Poland.

reception to mark the event. He noted that Poland had only been able to set up twinning arrangements with the first democratic government in 1990, although Polish soldiers had been involved in liberating that area of Holland in 1944.

Ros Cruse spoke on behalf of the Portishead group, having been a signatory to the original agreement. She thanked everyone for the great kindness and friendship that had been shown to everyone who had visited. Ros came home with a plaque presented by St Michielsgestel to Portishead and to Buk to mark the occasion.

Jos Korsten, the chairman of the Den Dungen Association, gave a very moving explanation of how the area had been

liberated in 1944/5 by British, Polish and Canadian forces.

The three national groups met again for a social and cultural evening, again hosted

by Jan Pommer. We were entertained by very lively traditional Polish and Dutch music and dancing, in full national costume. The English responded, with Dutch help, with what has almost become the anthem of the partnership “Go now in Peace”.

As well as spending time with Den Dungen residents and host families, there was an opportunity to visit the Keukenhof Gardens, with the tulips in full bloom, before the group returned home to Portishead.

Four-star venue receives £500K upgrade

oubleTree by Hilton, Cadbury House, has benefitted from a major upgrade, extending further its private party and conference facilities.

Representing an investment of £500,000,

it’s resulted in the main conference/meeting and private function areas being totally refurbished while increasing its overall capacity. It also includes an overhaul of the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill.

Bosses at the popular fourstar venue believe the work will strengthen its position as the best in the business for those needing a venue for events, meetings, conferences, weddings and celebrations.

Part of the work included the venue’s Great Room being completely upgraded, including all the latest interior trends, colours and fabrics. The capacity has risen too, allowing it to host much larger events with up to 350 guests being seated comfortably.

The hotel’s kitchens are next to receive an upgrade, enabling the kitchen team to cater for the rise in bookings.

General manager Colin Badcock said: “The work will now ensure the venue continues to offer the best combination of style and space to reflect the trends in what is a fastpaced hospitality sector.”

The Congresbury -based hotel has seen conference, events and wedding bookings rise and expects the trend to improve throughout the rest of 2015. This will result in further upgrades at the venue across all elements of the business including restaurant, bedrooms and wedding facilities.

Z

akhele are known to many school children across North Somerset. These young vibrant, energetic talented and inspiring performers are currently in the UK on their fourth visit to North Somerset. During their tour of 14 schools in the area Zakhele group will work with approx 4,500 young people. They share music, storytelling, drumming and singing with the primary school children and to secondary school students they deliver serious messages about HIV through drama and workshops.

This year, their educational work in schools is sponsored by the University West of England (UWE).

Aside from Zakhele’s important work in the schools, they will be performing also at two fundraising concerts (details below) with the aim to raise funds for ‘After-school Clubs’ for orphan and vulnerable children.

Their tour in North Somerset is

a far cry from the Nkomazi area where Zakhele normally work on a daily basis.

This is an area that has been devastated by the HIV pandemic where many family ‘bread-winners’ have died or are too ill to work, where HIV affects over 40% of the population and in its wake has an estimated 12 - 15,000 orphans. This poverty-stricken area with high unemployment poor education and widespread illiteracy sees 25% of children not even attending school.

These after school clubs are an essential safehaven for orphan children and Za Foundation, a charity headed by local volunteers with its head office based in Portishead High Street, aims to fund three clubs, supporting 240 orphans and vulnerable children a day.

Za Foundation believes every penny must count. There are no paid staff in the UK, everyone is a volunteer and with the generosity of individuals and companies, our overheads are absolutely minimal. We can therefore say that every penny raised at the fundraising concerts will go towards the After-school projects. Portishead gymnast heads to Pittsburgh

P

ortishead gymnast Lucy Brett has accepted a scholarship with the University of Pittsburgh - a first for any gymnast from the Academy in Portishead’s Harbour Road.

The scholarship will allow the 17-year-old to maintain her gymnastics training while also studying for a degree. US universities are far superior in their support for young sports men and women. Lucy, who competed at international level as a junior and has also represented England as a senior gymnast, will have three full time coaches available to her at the university and all the facilities she needs. Her gymnastics ability has earned her a full scholarship, so there will be no student loans for Lucy, the cost of the course, her accommodation and even her food and laundry will be covered.

Coach and Academy owner Liz Kincaid said: “We are proud to have gymnasts from the Academy compete in the Olympics but I found myself wondering what else I could do for our young gymnasts in Portishead. Helping them enter their adult life combining the sport they love which has been a huge part of their life since a very early age, while also progressing their education, was my conclusion. We are very proud of Lucy and are very pleased to see her move in to higher education in an environment that will allow her to continue to compete in gymnastics while also studying for her degree.”

Pedal power raises £100,000

O

ver the past few months Gordano Living has followed Paul Kingston of Clifton’s estate agents in Portishead, as he prepared for a fundraising bike ride from Bristol to Paris. On May 4 we received an email to say Paul and 70 other cyclists had made it, raising a whopping £100,000 for Above and Beyond, a charity that supports Bristol hospitals.

Paul says:”The Local Hero webpage for the Charity Above and Beyond simply states ‘take two wheels, 430 Kms, four days, a bit of sweat and a lot of laughs - that’s the Bristol to Paris Cycle Challenge’ and that is very much the picture. 71 of us left Clifton Suspension Bridge with a send-off from the Mayor of Bristol George Ferguson.

After six hours in the saddle up and down some of the steepest hills I’ve ever seen and I thought this truly is going to push me to the limits, but it got easier. The trip was just amazing and every day was a great adventure and lots of fun.

The euphoria of having achieved something amazing is still strong with me and I want to thank all those who donated towards this event. Team Cliftons raised £5,845.12 and the whole group raised more than £100,000. Medical Negligence FAQs - Did you know John Gomersall, Medical Negligence Associate at QualitySolicitors Burroughs Day, answers three frequently asked questions about bringing a medical negligence claim.

Q: How long have I got to bring a medical negligence claim?

A: The time limit for starting a medical negligence claim in the County or High Court is usually 3 years from the date of the alleged negligence (this is known as “Limitation”).

However, there are exceptions to this: • The law states that if someone who is under the age of 18 has an accident or suffers medical negligence and is injured, they have 3 years from the date of their 18th birthday to commence a formal claim in the Courts.

• Another exception is where the negligence results in death. In these circumstances Limitation will usually be 3 years from the date of the death, rather than from the date of the negligence itself.

• Finally, the 3 year Limitation period will only start to run from when one knew (or objectively ought to have known) that their injury was at least partially caused by the negligent treatment which is the subject of the compensation claim.

Q: My doctor made a mistake with my treatment. Am I automatically entitled to some compensation?

A: Some injured patients (known as “Claimants”) understandably, but incorrectly, assume this to be the case.

For any medical negligence claim to succeed, the injured person will have to prove not only that the medical treatment and/or advice received was negligent, but also that as a result of this negligence, the person suffered injury which he or she would not otherwise have suffered. If the patient cannot prove both of these things then the claim will fail.

For example, a GP prescribes a patient with a drug that the GP ought to know that patient is severely allergic to. However just before taking the drug the patient realises the GP’s mistake and does not take the drug. The GP was negligent in prescribing the drug, but the patient did not suffer any injury as a result. This claim would fail.

Q: Should I feel guilty about suing my doctor for medical negligence?

A: The clinicians involved with your treatment did not set out to injure you on purpose. That said, you can rest assured that it will still be

you and your loved ones who have to cope with the consequences of the negligent treatment that caused your injuries.

You may require treatment to assist you with your recovery. Even if that treatment is available under the NHS it may not be as frequent as would ideally be the case. Who is going to have to pay for private treatment therefore? You again.

In addition to the above you may well have suffered loss of earnings as a result of having to take time off work to recover from your injuries; a loss for which you should be reimbursed.

If you have suffered injury and loss as a result of medical negligence, you are entitled to be adequately compensated as a result. Guilt free!

Dave Mortimore, owner of the discount store, who has been a big supporter of community events since he opened, says he can no longer make ends meet. He said: “My takings dropped when the 99p store opened and we have seen fewer customers in the High Street since the local buses rerouted via Sainsbury. The opening of Home Bargain later in the year will be the final nail in the coffin for me. I feel independent traders just don’t stand a chance.”

wo teams of Gordano Sixth formers put their engineering and coding skills to the test in the 2015 National Student Robotics competition.

The students built and programmed

autonomous robots to take part in the two day competition against schools and colleges from across the country.

Gordano’s ‘Egyptians’ team managed to battle their Egyptian themed robot into the quarter finals, but sadly were knocked out before reaching the semi-final.

Team Aculeus modelled their robot on a scorpion design, and managed to finish the competition in second place, losing only to Bishop Wordsworth School from Salisbury.

Artistic Director of SLAMbassadors works with budding poets

oelle Taylor, founder and Artistic Director of SLAMbassadors, has been visiting Gordano School as part of the ‘Word in the West’ spoken word festival, coordinated by the Poetry Society.

15 Year 9 pupils from Gordano School were thrilled to meet Joelle and to get involved in poetry recitals and workshops designed to inspire some exciting spoken word pieces. As a published poet, spoken word artist and award winning playwright, Joelle models the art of spoken word performance and is an inspirational figure for young writers. She is also the founder/artistic director of SLAMbassadors UK, the national youth slam championships administered by the Poetry Society.

Funded by the Arts Council England, Word in The West is a regional poetry event, searching for budding poets in our schools, and working with local people to create new and exciting work.

The new laws state that children under the age of five can work until 10pm for television and theatre, whereas this used to be restricted to 7pm for television. In addition, now children over the age of five can work for both mediums until 11pm.

Portishead mum for four Donna Addy (nee Redman), is looking for old pals, friends and family to help her raise money for two charities close to her heart.

At the time of writing this, Donna, who has been living with cancer for sometime, is determined to get home from the BRI’s Oncology Centre to attend a fundraising party event she has organised for June 5. She said: “It is likely to be the last chance I will get to see old friends, so I am hoping everyone I know will come along and make it a night to remember.” Any money raised will go to breast cancer charity BUST and Dyslexia Action.

Free Concert Portishead Town Band is holding its first concert as a brass ensemble on Saturday May 30 at the Methodist Church in Portishead High Street, Portishead, 7-9pm, under the direction of temporary MD Dilly Taylor. Football Club

You don’t have to be a sportsman or woman to be a member of Portishead Football Club. The Bristol Road clubhouse sports dartboards and skittle alley for those who prefer to have a social drink and compete in a less strenuous game than on the pitch. Of course players of all ages are very welcome, as are spectators. There are also numerous fundraising events that take place at the club throughout the year from live bands or comedians to an Ascot Ladies Day and family fun days.

The football club provides activities and events for the whole community with football facilities for those aged six years and over. It welcomes new members and visitors.

Kayaking

They welcome ‘all comers’ whether just to enjoy a good night out at your local theatre, to perform, or become more involved front stage, back stage or just helping out.

The self- funded drama group goes from strength to strength with award achievements and highly talented members including play-writes.

The Players’ season runs from September to July with their performing venue being Somerset Hall in the High Street.

Cricket The beginning of summer signals another season at Portishead Cricket Club and a chance to build upon the unprecedented interest at the club at both senior and junior levels.

The club fields three senior Saturday league sides, and a Sunday side playing friendlies. Last year, the club’s first team gained promotion to the West of England Premier League, whilst the season saw membership of over a hundred junior cricketers from Under 7s to U15s. And it is the junior section that is the lifeblood of the club, with Friday evening training being an ideal opportunity for children to let off steam while parents and friends do the same with a barbecue and bar in full swing.

With the rising population of the town comes the opportunity of Portishead Cricket Club to cater for increased interest, providing an important social hub for the community and improve playing standards.

White Lion roars again M ezze at the White Lion has re-launched after a £125,000 reinvestment project to secure its position as one of the leading venues in Portishead.

The High Street cornerstone has undergone a range of significant improvements with the creation of the Lazy Lion bar and cocktail lounge, in order to meet the needs of its diverse range of customers.

The ground floor has been refitted in a rustic but sharp design, offering distressed timbers, steel bars and edgy artwork. A new garden bar servery has been added and improvements to the garden include new seating areas, raised sections and flame lit heaters to provide a fresh Mediterranean feel.

A new Carte D’Or Ice Cream parlour has been created, as well as an exclusive VIP entrance to Mezze’s revamped upper level restaurant.

Mezze says the improvements, together with a new menu and ‘hotly’ anticipated takeaway will help secure Mezze’s long term future as a top venue in Portishead.

his month I was invited to eat at Spicy Aroma.

Visiting on a Sunday lunch time with my daughter Charlie, we received a very warm welcome from all of the staff.

Spicy Aroma is situated next to Clarence House in Portishead High Street. It seats up to 70 people and has ample parking for all visitors.

Whether it is an intimate dinner for two, or a birthday celebration, Spicy Aroma is happy to cater for your requirements We decided to visit on a Sunday to try the Sunday lunchtime buffet menu, which did not disappoint. With a choice of 10 dishes, there is something for everyone. Dishes range from mild spice, to a warmer offering and a wide choice of both meat and vegetable dishes. One aspect my daughter really liked was that she could go back up and fill her plate more than once!

personal allowance is the amount of tax-free income that an individual is entitled to.

It can vary according to your age, gender and your circumstances.

As already announced the basic personal allowance for 2015/16 will be £10,600. The Budget on March 18 announced there will be a further above inflation increase to £10,800 for 2016/17 and £11,000 in 2017/18.

Those aged 75 and over will continue to receive a personal allowance of £10,660 for 2015/16 but by 2016/17 they will receive the basic personal allowance.

The 20 per cent basic rate band is £31,785 for 2015/16 and will be £31,900 for 2016/17. This means that you pay 40% tax if your taxable income exceeds £42,385 for 2015/16 and £42,700 for 2016/17. It is proposed that the higher rate tax threshold will increase to £43,300 for 2017/18.

The 45 per cent top rate continues to apply to taxable income over £150,000 for 2015/16.

Exercise of the Month: Lever Low W-Press Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides advice for those who work out. This month he talks us through the Lever Low W-Press.

F

ew of you will be familiar with an exercise called the Dumbbell W-Press.

It seems to have been heralded from the

Vince Gironda training camp, a popular trainer to Hollywood stars during the 50’s to 70’s.

It’s not only a great exercise for developing the lateral head of the deltoids (shoulders), but is also very kind on the shoulder complex as a whole. It involves pressing two relatively light dumbbells from your shoulders with elbows tucked in, to form a

w-shape appearance with your two arms, to above head (high version) or out to your sides above shoulder height (low version).

The Lever Low W-Press variant is a 21st century Gym Professor twist on what is a fantastic and near forgotten exercise.

Landmines (dual-pivoting lever arm) are fairly commonplace in gyms now and are ideal for this exercise; alternatively, using a bar with one end anchored against a wall will work fine.

The lever provides a comfortable low w-press arc to tax the deltoids and also a strong requirement from the rotator cuff muscles to stabilise the shoulder joint.

Choose an appropriate weight. Raise the non-anchored end of the bar from the floor, taking it to your shoulders. Hold the bar with one hand and turn side-on (90 degrees) to the bar to assume the start position, as shown in figure 1. Extend the elbow to press outward and upward (figure 2). Return to the start position and repeat.

The Importance of Sleep

A

s we approach the summer solstice and the nights get shorter, as a local hypnotherapist I thought I would highlight the importance of a good night’s sleep.

With increased natural light levels and warmer temperatures, people who have difficulty sleeping often struggle more during the summer months. This can have a huge knock-on effect on their mental and physical well-being.

Sleep is important in so many ways. It’s essential in enabling us to learn effectively and to form memories; that’s why we become forgetful if we’re struggling with insomnia. As a rule of thumb, for every two hours we are awake, we seem to need an hour of sleep to download, process and file the information we have gathered during wakefulness.

If we don’t get enough sleep, we end up with ‘unfinished business’ which clutters our minds, making it difficult to concentrate or to make decisions” and causing us stress and anxiety.

Sleep is important to our physical wellbeing too. It has a beneficial effect on our immune and endocrine (hormone) systems, and there is evidence to suggest that obesity may be linked to a lack of sleep.

I help people to improve their sleep patterns, first by checking they have good

‘sleep hygiene’ in terms of making sure their sleep environment is comfortable and that they’ve taken time to wind down before going to bed. I also give all new clients a free CD to help them relax into sleep and to help them to de-clutter their mind from the day’s influx of worries and loose ends.

Finally I help clients to deal better with the stresses in their lives, using Solution Focused Hypnotherapy techniques, helping them to change their unhelpful patterns of behaviour by encouraging them to visualise more beneficial ways of coping with situations, followed by a session of hypnosis to consolidate their positive image of the future. When they’re coping better, their brain has fewer problems to resolve during sleep. It’s not unusual for clients to report dreaming more vividly after the first few sessions, while their brain is busy decluttering a backlog of unresolved issues.

Contact the Elderly celebrates 50th anniversary

A

s national charity Contact the Elderly celebrates 50 years of combating loneliness in older people, the Portishead group, which hosts monthly tea parties for isolated older people, is calling for more support in the local area.

The group in Portishead is organised by local volunteers celebrated the charity’s Golden Jubilee with a special ‘Big FifTEA’ party.

With many over-75s isolated in their own homes and cut off from society, Contact the Elderly is appealing to Portishead residents to help them to reach more isolated older people locally.

The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and over, by hosting monthly tea parties in the homes of volunteer hosts. Volunteers are able to provide older guests with much-needed contact to make new friendships with local older people and younger volunteers.

The charity’s tea parties in Portishead are organised by husband and wife

Warren and Rachel Nash, who set up the town’s first group in June 2012. The scheme was such a success that the volunteering couple set up their second group around eighteen months ago.

Rachel says: “Many of our older guests say what a difference the monthly tea parties have made to them – they really enjoy an afternoon of tea, cake and conversation. For our volunteer drivers and tea party hosts its great too – they really look forward to seeing our older guests, the majority of whom are in their nineties. We are now on the lookout for local volunteer drivers who can commit just three hours a month to help drive older guests to and from the tea parties, and for tea party hosts to host around eight older guests at a party in their home just once a year.”

What happens if my pet needs a blood transfusion?

A:

Currently there are two available options for our canine pals in need of life saving blood. One is the pet blood bank, which like our human counterpart, stores frozen blood donated from other dogs. However, the blood is not as widely available as it is only stored at certain Veterinary Hospitals. The other option is fresh blood donated at the time from a matched donor dog.

It is a sad reality that fresh blood from donor cats and dogs can often be hard to come by. For this reason, Vale Vets has created a blood donor register for cats and dogs at Portishead Veterinary Centre, to promote awareness of pet blood donation, and recruit prospective new blood donors.

Allowing your pet to join this register could potentially help save a life.

In our Blood Donor Clinic, we will collect a tiny sample of blood from your pet to determine the blood-type, and talk to you about the process of donating. Your pet’s details and blood-type will be recorded on our donor list; in time, if a patient matching your pet’s blood type is in need of a transfusion, you may be contacted and asked, if available, to attend the hospital with your pet for donation.

Allotment Virgins Stroke survivor Lori Rowsell and her family have been sharing their allotment experiences with Gordano Living readers ever since they were first allocated a plot at Gertie Gales allotments in North Weston several years ago.

In return for her regular blog, Gordano Living is pleased to make a monthly donation to the Portishead Stroke Group which runs a drop in café at Clarence House in Portishead High Street from 10.30am on the first Friday of each month. The drop-in sessions offer good company, practical advice and can point stroke survivors of all ages in the right direction for help and support. Lori can’t stress enough that this is not just for ‘old’ people. Lori was in her forties when she experienced a stroke and has been surprised to find out how many young people are affected by strokes. Carers and friends are also very welcome.

With every fresh planting at the allotment there comes a new scourge of bugs and insects. There are hundreds of ladybirds this year but a quick check confirmed they were “good” invaders, apparently great for controlling greenfly. So they weren’t urged to fly away home. Not so good are the ants which cause disruption to plant roots, nor the whitefly, nor the leatherjackets (!), nor the slugs. The slugs had already attacked the marigolds planted as the companion to the carrots. So let the battle commence. Garden pests you have been warned.

Take 150ml of stock, add onions and bay leaves.

Bring to boil and simmer for 5 mins.

Add potatoes, leeks and remaining stock. Season well. Bring to boil and simmer for 25 mins until tender.

Discard bay leaves, blend until smooth.

Stir in fromage frais and reheat gently.

Season to taste.

Serve with 2 small slices low cal wholemeal bread or if you’re lucky (and slim!) a nice crusty loaf with lashings of butter.

There’s always a night frost that kills off the hard work and means we have to start again. So early June will see a transfer of runner beans, French beans, sprouts and broccoli. All are growing well in the greenhouse and a second lot of seeds have been started so we can stagger our planting with another round in July. That should mean the harvest is staggered and there’s lots of pickings of veggies through August, September and October.
