ortishead is such a great place isn’t it?

This month the town has a long list of events and activities taking place, all organised by volunteers for the enjoyment of local residents and visitors to the town, with many of them raising money for good causes.

If the sun shines on July 5 I can’t think of a better way to spend the day than at the annual raft race and waterside picnic at the Lake Grounds. Each year this event raises around £10,000 for charity, so do go along and support it if you can, it promises fun for all ages.

Also this month we have the town’s annual Flower Show and Country Fair, a two day event with hundreds of classes alongside a varied programme of activities and entertainment.

To complement these two major events you will also find an array of school fairs and fetes, Portishead in Bloom’s community picnic and judging day and a massive sponsored walk and family fun day in support of the Bristol and Avon Multiple Sclerosis (BrAMS) Centre.

As the children prepare for their summer break from school, I wish you all a very sunny July (fingers crossed).

Raft race and waterside picnic

T

housands of people are expected to flock to Portishead’s Lake Grounds on Sunday July 5 for a splashing time at the town’s annual raft race and village fete.

There will be fun for all the family with bouncy castles, rides, stalls, sideshows, a hog roast, live music and local charity stands.

The raft race will take a similar format to previous years with a number of qualifying races around the lake, with the winners of each heat going through to the grand final.

As well as prizes for the winning rafts, there will be awards for the best dressed vessel, best designed and for the most

sponsorship raised.

Alternatively, why not enter your own edible boat in the 2015 regatta? All you have to do is make a bite sized boat out of anything edible... and you could win a prize! It’s great fun for all ages, but especially for those who want to join in but are too young to enter a raft.

The raft race is an event that provides fun for all, bringing the community together while also raising funds for local charities.

A spokesman for the event said: “We would like to say a big thank you to all our sponsors and other supporters who help make this event possible and so worthwhile. A number of local charities benefit as a result and thousands of people have lots of fun.”

C

ouncillor Ros Cruse has been elected the new chairman of Portishead Town Council. This is not the first time Mrs Cruse has held this position; she served as chairman of the town council in 1988/89 and again in 2001/02. Mrs Cruse is an active member of many local organisations including the Town Twinning Association and she is also chairman of the Portishead Youth Centre management committee.

Mrs Cruse presented outgoing council chairman Don Cameron with a town plaque at a council meeting on May 20, thanking him for his hard work throughout the past year.

Councillor Marilyn Koops was voted town council vice chairman for the coming year.

Diabetes support

he next meeting of the Portishead Diabetes Support Group will be held at the Health Centre in Victoria Square, Portishead on Monday July 27 at 7.30pm.

Dr Rob Andrews, a diabetologist from Musgrove Park Hospital, will talk about diabetes, diabetic control and research into the future The group is run by volunteers (including medical professionals) for people living with diabetes and their families, friends and carers.

All are welcome. There are no membership fees, although a raffle is held at each meeting, the income from which helps to cover costs.

Open air pool needs volunteers

Portishead Open Air Pool is looking for more volunteers to help out with reception and tuck shop duties. Full training will be given.

Family fun sponsored walk

A

Portishead mum is hoping to raise thousands of pounds this month, for a multiple sclerosis centre that has supported her.

Sarah Boyce of Lower Down Road was diagnosed with relapse remit MS in 2010 and was helped through the early days of her diagnosis by the Bristol and Avon Multiple Sclerosis (BrAMS) Centre.

The centre not only supports people with the condition, but also carries out stem cell research and clinical trials in a quest to find a cure and new medication to help ease the suffering of MS patients.

Sarah, a Lloyds Bank customer service assistant, said: “BrAMS assigned an MS nurse to me before my condition was even confirmed and the support and advice I have received from her and the staff at the centre proved invaluable. They helped me through a very difficult time as I adjusted to my condition and I want to show my appreciation by giving something back to help the good work they do.”

The 45-year-old has organised a sponsored walk, barbecue with stalls and a raffle to

help raise money for BrAMS. The walk, of about four and a half miles, will take place around Portishead on Sunday July 19. It is the second walk Sarah has organised to raise money for BrAMS, a similar event raised thousands of pounds for the centre in 2011.

Sarah added: “We already have well over 150 people joining in, including several wheelchair users and I’m hoping lots more will turn up on the day to support us.”

The walk will start and finish at Clarence House in Portishead High Street.

Participants can sign in at the club from mid-day, with the walk beginning at 1.30pm. The route will take in the High Street, Cabstand, Lake Grounds and the marina, before heading back to Clarence House for a barbecue. Those taking part are asked to wear fancy dress or something red.

Back at the club after the walk there will be more than 60 prizes up for grabs in a huge raffle, there will be a mammoth tombola, stalls and the barbecue.

Portishead Flower Show and Country Fair

A

ctor Johnny Briggs, who most people will know best for his role as Mike Baldwin in British soap Coronation Street, will open this year’s Portishead Flower Show and Country Fair.

The annual event, which will take place in the Show Field at the bottom of Clapton Lane over the weekend of July 25 and 26, promises two days of family fun with something to appeal to everyone.

Arena events include Oreo and Friends Animal Encounters, David

Seamark Sheepdogs, Gamegoer Gun Dog Display, The Ferret Show, Somerset Paddies, Bob Reynolds Jazz Band, Donkey Rides, Punch and Judy and Songs of Praise.

Local dance troupes from Portishead Youth Club and the Gordano Just Dance Company will also be entertaining and on the Sunday there will be a Companion Dog Show involving 14 pedigree and novelty classes. The profits from the dog show will go to the Labrador Rescue Trust.

While the show continues with the good traditions of the past, it also

endeavours to promote country life, nature and the environment as well as providing an outlet for local residents to show their talent.

The annual event is self financing and costs over £20,000 to run.

RNLI Shop open

new RNLI shop is now open at the new lifeboat station at Eastcliff.

Pictured is councillor John Clark, who was the shop’s first customer when it opened earlier in the summer. Mr Clark says he hopes the shop thrives and provides additional support to the vital lifesaving service provided by the RNLI.

Pantomime sleepover

reat fun was had by all when the 3rd Redcliffe Bay Guides held their annual pantomime sleepover at Tickenham Village Hall.

The guides put on a performance of “Rats!” a comedic take on the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The girls took on roles from the Pied Piper himself through to some very squeaky rats, as well as stage managing and helping to create a very impressive set. With everyone working together the girls pulled off two fantastic performances, despite only one day of rehearsals.

As always 3rd Redcliffe Bay Guides would like to extend a huge thank you to Tickenham Drama Group and in particular Dave Sims who did a fabulous job on lighting and sound.

uide dogs for the blind will be at Waitrose Piazza in Harbour Road, Portishead on Saturday July 18 from10am4pm. Guide dogs and puppies will be waiting to greet visitors to the charity stall (weather permitting) which will be selling a range of items for people and their pets, raising money for this worthy cause.

fundraising luncheon at Redcliffe Bay Hall raised £1,318 for St Peter’s Hospice.

The volunteers who organised the event would like to thank everyone who supported the event in any way.

Curate moves on

R

everend Jeremy Putnam, who became a much loved character in and around Portishead, has moved from his ‘training ground’ to become Priest-in-Charge of All Saints Highertown and Baldhu in the diocese of Truro, Cornwall.

Curates tend to come and go as the post is a training one for clergy at the start of their ministry. From the start, Jeremy proved himself well able to take a full part in church life and became a familiar figure in the town. Jeremy was known for throwing himself behind a number of challenging fundraising activities including the Tough Mudder, one of the most taxing assault courses

going, and abseiling down the tower at St Peter’s Church.

A church spokesman said: “Jeremy’s final service packed St Peter’s and the lunch that followed left him in no doubt of the affection in which he is held. As a leaving gift he was presented with a wetsuit, which the congregation thought might come in handy for a new leisure pursuit for his new life in Cornwall.”

Together with his wife Ruth Reverend Jeremy showing off his wetsuit and daughters Rebekah and Emily, Jeremy is now settling into his new home on the outskirts of Truro.

Lifeboat news

V

olunteer crew, fundraisers, supporters and founder members of the Portishead Lifeboat Trust mustered at their old home at Sugar Loaf Bay on May 9 to launch the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat for the last time.

As the crew made its way down the slipway to launch, the Portishead Yacht and Sailing Club called for them to assist a safety boat that was helping two sailors in difficulty off Battery Point. So the goodbye was a rather quick launch and off they went to assist the sailors.

Once the sailors were safely on their way back to the sailing club, the lifeboat made its way to the new RNLI lifeboat station to join the RNLI operational lifeboat Spirit of Clovelly. Here, volunteers joined family and friends of late Portishead Lifeboat Trust chairman John Gittings to spread his ashes. The RNLI gave the family special permission to use both the lifeboats for a very touching and unique ceremony, conducted by the lifeboat padre. A spokesman for the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat described it as “the perfect send off for a great man”.

The Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat B-733 will now join the RNLI relief fleet in Poole, leaving the Spirit of Clovelly to continue work in the Channel.

Lifeboat brings family safely ashore

A

half term holiday could have ended very differently for a family visiting Portishead.

With the sun in the sky, a couple and their three children from Birmingham set off from the beach near the new lifeboat station, in their small inflatable boat. As they rounded Battery Point, with it being such a lovely day, they decided to jump into the water for a swim.

Portishead coastguard and lifeboat teams work hard in the community visiting schools and local organisations to ensure local residents are aware of the strong currents and high tides on the Portishead coast, not to mention how close the shipping lane is to the shore at Battery Point.

Knowing how dangerous the stretch of water is, locals on the shoreline called coastguard and lifeboat volunteers as soon

as they saw the family in the water.

The Spirit of Clovelly was launched, by which time the family had already drifted to Black Nore Point, a mile further down the Channel. The family, who were advised to return to shore, say they were extremely surprised to be the subject of a rescue operation.

Mum Cristina and her small children were taken on to the lifeboat, while dad took the small inflatable back to shore under escort.

Volunteer helm Bruce du Preez said: “It was good to see the family had appropriate buoyancy aids on them but they had no idea they were in a dangerous stretch of water or how quickly sea conditions can change off the coast of Portishead. We felt the best thing to do was to assist them back to the safety of the shore.”

On arriving back at the lifeboat station the young family were taken inside for a cup of tea.

Cristina said: “We had no idea of the dangers in the Channel and can’t thank the volunteers enough for ensuring we remained safe. We will definitely advise the coastguards next time we venture out anywhere again.”

A spokesman for the volunteer crew said: “It is always worth checking tidal

conditions and local weather reports when setting off for the day in unfamiliar water.”

What better way to spend a warm and sunny Saturday or Sunday afternoon, than wandering around delightful gardens of all shapes and sizes throughout Portishead?

The many delights this year included cottage gardens full of old favourites such as roses, clematis and mixed shrub borders; ironworks, water features, chickens and even a lighthouse!

Sandy Tebbutt, chairman of Portishead in Bloom, said: “The Open Gardens weekend each June is now a firmly established part of Portishead’s summer events and we know that many people eagerly anticipate the weekend.

We are extremely grateful to the gardeners who took part this year; a

tremendous amount of work goes in to creating and maintaining these treasured spots.

It is lovely to think these great gardeners are happy to share their gardens with our visitors, many of whom travel quite a distance. We would like to thank everyone who supported the event in any way, from the gardeners and volunteers to the visitors themselves; it was a tremendously successful weekend.”

The Open Gardens weekend is Portishead in Bloom’s biggest fundraising events, raising funds to keep Portishead looking good.

A picnic was held in Jubilee Park last year as the grand finale to Portishead in Bloom’s judging day for the Nationals In Bloom event.

Lodge members were pleased to hand over cheques to both organisations at a recent Sunday lunch event.

The Julian Trust offers emergency night shelter services for the homeless, while Springboard supports North Somerset children with additional needs and their families.

A spokesman from the Lodge said: “As a national organisation we support medical research, youth opportunities, hospice services and many more deserving organisations.

We hope as many people as possible will come along on Saturday July 4 at 5pm to support the Nailsea and Portishead members and Sunday July 5 at 2pm to support the Clevedon and Ashton members.

The Rock Project offers youngsters aged between seven and 18 weekly

tuition in guitar, drums bass and vocals, in a fun and relaxed environment.

The two hour, weekly sessions combine professional tuition with lots of other music related activities ranging from jamming and singing to music quizzes to help teach theory.

The budding musicians are encouraged to form bands and professional rock concerts are staged at the end of the academic year to allow students to show off the skills they have developed.

The Rock Project is now recruiting for September.

This independent family run furniture store, known for quality and its first class service, has been keeping customers happy since 1965.

Owned by Robin Orchard, the store which sells mid to high end furniture for the dining room, living room and bedroom, has been in Nailsea for 28 years.

Q: ‘Probate’, ‘Executor’ - What does it all mean?

‘Probate’ is the process of dealing with a deceased person’s affairs. An ‘executor’ is the person responsible for managing a deceased person’s assets, including money, property and possessions.

Q: What is a Grant of Probate?

A: If the deceased individual left a will, this will explain what should happen to their assets. The named executor(s) will apply for a ‘Grant of Probate’ from the Probate Registry which will give them the legal authority to administer the estate.

Q: What if there is no will?

A: If there is no will, a close relative can apply for a letter of administration.

Eligibility to apply follows a strict priority, starting with husband/wife/registered civil partner, then adult children, followed by parents and so on. Significantly, common law partners i.e. cohabitees, are not eligible.

Q: When do I need probate?

A: Probate is not needed when the estate is very small, e.g. worth less than £5,000 or if the deceased owned assets with someone else in a way that everything passes to the survivor. However, some financial institutions would require a grant before allowing access to the assets.

Q: What can be done?

A: There are different solutions to different problems. You should consider whether the benefits of engaging in a dispute outweigh the costs, with the potential aggravation and inevitable breakdown of family relationships that might follow. We can help you consider your options.

Q: What can go wrong?

A: We are seeing a rising number of challenges to wills and disagreements over inheritance. This is not surprising given the complexity of modern families and relationships. The following issues are just some examples: • Doubts about the mental capacity of the deceased.

• Arguments over the way the estate is being handled.

• Suspicions that the person was coerced into making the will.

• Forged or fraudulently obtained wills.

• Dissatisfaction with the terms of the will.

• Disputes over ownership of the assets.

Children aged three years and over will be performing a collection of music, song and dance, along with their own adaptations of The Three Little Pigs and Red Riding Hood.

Members of the public are invited to watch the performance which will take place in the drama studio at Portishead Youth Centre in Harbour Road with curtain up at 11.30am. Tickets costing £3 each will be available on the door.

The Cheryl Rowlands School of Drama is a locally run, non franchised drama school for 3-13-year-olds which has been providing non-exclusive, affordable drama classes to children of all abilities since 1998. Classes are open to any child who wishes to have the opportunity to tread the boards, and over the years the school has successfully proven that even the shyest of children, regardless of their theatrical ability can develop confidence before an audience or in their daily lives if they are simply given the opportunity to develop their creativity.

Lighthouse Café This month sees the first year anniversary Photograph by Geoff Vian of the opening of The Lighthouse Café.

A café spokesperson said: “It has been a privilege to welcome so many people to St Nicholas’ Church in Nore Road between 2.00 and 4.00pm on a Thursday afternoon where tea, coffee and delicious home-made cakes are served by a team of volunteers each week.”

No charge is made for the refreshments but visitors are invited to make a donation and, after taking out expenses, the balance of money is given to charity. A different charity is chosen each month and by the end of May 2015 £1,924-00 had been shared between ten different local charities.

The café aims to provide a happy and relaxed environment where all are welcome and there is always someone to chat to. So, whether you are with friends or on your own, why not pay them a visit?

Artist’s Show There’s no doubt that West Country artist Yvonne Coomber has been influenced by the colourful and textured life she has led and it’s plain to see why she is so popular.

New Physiotherapy and Pilates centre in Clevedon

T

he Physiotherapy and Pilates Rehabilitation Centre on Knowles Road is now open offering rehabilitation for a variety of conditions, with a fully equipped physiotherapy gym and Pilates studio, complete with state of the art Pilates machines.

The new centre will be run by Karen, specialist rehabilitation Pilates instructor

and Sarah, a specialist physiotherapist who is also a Pilates instructor. Both Sarah and Karen have 20 years’ experience in rehabilitation. They offer physiotherapy assessment and management of conditions including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, stroke, poor balance and falls, rehabilitation after illness such as cancer or after operations such as a hip replacement.

Pilates programmes can be carefully tailored to the individual’s needs using Pilates machines such as the reformer and cadillac which work by using a gentle system of springs and pulleys.

In this way movement can be aided or made more difficult depending on the needs of the client leading to improved alignment, flexibility and strength.

As well as being great for the rehabilitation, Pilates can eliminate posture related pain and offer general toning and strengthening to achieve a leaner, firmer body.

annah Burdge was the first beauty therapist to offer semi-permanent makeup in Portishead. Working from a self contained beauty room at her home in the town, since qualifying she has worked hard to perfect her skills, building a good clientele and solid reputation for quality.

This month Gordano Living has been finding out how some of Hannah’s clients

So what is eyebrow embroidery?

This is a relatively new, manual method of semipermanent make-up creating a natural 3D hairstroke technique. It is done by microstroking pigment in to the epidermis and because colour is impacted close to the surface the hair strokes appear crisp and very fine. Before the process begins the shape and colour of your new brows are selected and once you are happy with them a sterile, hypoallergenic tool is used to recreate your new brows which, after one touch up session, can last up to 18 months.

A:HMRC have contracts with some private companies to undertake work on their behalf; one of which is Concentrix and you should deal with them in the same way you would deal with HMRC. From 6th April 2015, the rules tightened slightly and self employed tax credits claimants must be able to demonstrate that their business is conducted on a commercial basis; with a view to achieving profits. These changes will not affect the rules for claiming Child Tax Credit.

My 15 year old dog, Trixie, was put to sleep a couple of months ago which, although peaceful, was very upsetting. Since then, I seem to be tired all the time, keep crying and I’m plagued by feelings of guilt. Is it normal to feel this way about a dog? How long can I expect it to go on for?

A:

First of all, I am so sad that you had to say goodbye to Trixie. She shared your life for 15 years and that’s a long time.

Secondly, the feelings you are experiencing are completely normal, and they will pass.

The loss of a pet is really no different from the loss of a human and the bereavement process is the same. No two people will grieve in the same way and at the same speed and there are no hard and fast rules

but it is generally accepted that there are five key stages to the bereavement process – DENIAL, ANGER, BARGAINING, DEPRESSION and ACCEPTANCE. They can happen in no particular order, we can flit from one to the other for variable periods of time and we may not experience all of them.

To help you recover it is important that you express whatever emotions you are feeling. Vale Vets takes this part of pet ownership very seriously and therefore provides their own pet bereavement support service with Hilary (pictured).

Stroke survivor Lori Rowsell and her family have been sharing their allotment experiences with Gordano Living readers ever since they were first allocated a plot at Gertie Gales allotments in North Weston several years ago.

In return for her regular blog, Gordano Living is pleased to make a monthly donation to the Portishead Stroke Group which runs a drop in café at Clarence House in Portishead High Street from 10.30am on the first Friday of each month. The drop-in sessions offer good company, practical advice and can point stroke survivors of all ages in the right direction for help and support. Lori can’t stress enough that this is not just for ‘old’ people. Lori was in her forties when she experienced a stroke and has been surprised to find out how many young people are affected by strokes. Carers and friends are also very welcome.

Something’s been nibbling the peas and given they’re only a couple of inches high it’s unlikely to be best mate Penny just yet. So they’ve been sprayed along with the French beans and broccoli. Now all we need is for them to start growing. The first month went well given the seeds were planted directly into the ground; initial shoots soon appeared and growth was good, but then they just stopped.

I quickly referred to my trusted friend (not Alan Titchmarch this time but Google) and have discovered that they’ve most likely been checked with cold. ‘A cold snap

“checks” them, and they do nothing for several weeks’. It’s apparently one of the dangers of planting early, which really annoys me as I tried so hard not to plant out too early. With luck, as the weather picks up they will just grow on as normal.

Thank goodness nothing else has been ‘checked’ although the cabbage and cauliflower seeds haven’t actually reared their heads above the soil yet so it is possible they’re also waiting for nice hot weather. Mind you, they might actually be there and I’ve just not distinguished them from the weeds yet. For the first month or so I generally have to stop weeding the seed beds as there’s a real risk I will pull up the seedlings in error. I can now recognise carrots, beetroot, peas and sweetcorn so I’m definitely getting better, but I’m not so sure about cabbages and caulis. Best not to take a chance until they are well established.

So for now the days are mostly filled with watching, watering and debugging. It’s going to be a long summer!

This is a simple side dish to accompany an Indian main course Serves 4

• 440g green beans trimmed • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 200ml vegetable stoc k • 2 tbsp mild cur ry powder • 150g tomatoes, halved (I used tinned bec ause that’s all I had!)

Trim the beans and boil for 2 mins.

Drain and set aside.

Fry onion in low cal cooking spr ay for 5 mins, add cur ry powder, cook for 1 min.

Add stoc k, tomatoes and beans, simmer for 2 mins. Sea son and serve. Enjoy!
