Portishead Church of England says ‘Thank you Portishead!’

I

n 2012 Portishead Church of England set a £750,000 challenge to develop and restore its two churches, St Peter’s and St Nicholas’. The aim was to ensure the two historic buildings would be well maintained, welcoming and accessible, with good community facilities to fulfil the 21st century needs of the community in the growing town.

The challenge was first put to the congregation and over one amazing weekend in February 2012, £250,000 was pledged. The campaign was then launched in the town and one Friday morning in April people woke up to find familiar landmarks wrapped in knitted garments – Portishead had been yarnbombed!

This, along with a Flower Festival at St Nicholas’ and the ‘Keying’ of the town, where one night

in 2013 giant coloured keys appeared across Portishead - all helped raise public awareness of the campaign.

Thanks to the generosity of many individuals including over 2,000 people who sponsored a tile, the support of Portishead Town Council and the Big Lottery Fund, along with a wonderful legacy and a partnership with Portishead United Reformed Church, the campaign total has now been raised and the work all completed.

St Nicholas’ Church, in Nore Road, has now been re-roofed and the stone work cleaned. Internal re-ordering at the back of the church has created a wonderful community facility that is home to the Lighthouse Café.

St Peter’s Church has similarly undergone re-ordering and now has a proper kitchen and two toilets! St Peter’s School has created two banners for the church, capturing different images of Portishead.

The nautical and industrial heritage of the town is celebrated in a wonderful new Mustad Cross of Nails, (created by Codsteaks) along with a new altar and altar rails (created by Newton Forge).

An open day will take place at both churches on February 14 between 10.30am-3.30pm to allow everyone to

see the completed work and learn more about the history of the two buildings.

Icy swim raises £700

M

ore than 100 daring swimmers braved the icy water at Portishead Open Air Pool on Christmas morning.

Cold water swimming enthusiasts had been using the pool on Saturday mornings since the boilers were turned off at the end of the season in September and such was the interest that pool trustees suggested a Christmas Day dip. Around 500 people turned out to watch over 100 swimmers take to the water, some in wetsuits, others

in fancy dress and a few in bikinis and Speedos.

The Outdoor Swimming Society donated swim hats for the first 50 swimmers and everyone who swam got a special certificate.

Pool spokesperson Barbara Thatcher, said: “The festive atmosphere was amazing with so many people appreciating the chance to do something out of the ordinary on

Portishead Open Gardens Can you help?

ortishead in Bloom’s biggest fundraising event of the year is the Portishead Open Gardens weekend and the group is looking for new gardeners to join the event.

Could you take part to support this hardworking organisation that helps keep Portishead looking good and decked in plants and flowers all year round?

On the weekend of June 6 and 7, volunteers in Portishead will open their gardens to

programmes to walk around their gardens, whilst others run charity stalls, art exhibitions, provide live music, include plant or book stalls and refreshments ranging from bacon butties to afternoon tea.

Admission is by programme only and although generally the householders open their gardens between 10.30am and 5pm on both days, if this is not convenient hosts can choose when to open within these hours.

Visitors come from far and wide to experience the Portishead Open Gardens;

the atmosphere is always wonderful and it makes for a great weekend, especially if the sun shines!

Lifeboat station update P ortishead’s new lifeboat station in Pier Road continues to take shape. The access steps to the Royal Beach have been completed, although they are not yet open.

Some of the zinc sheets have been fitted on the roof and the roof light is currently being installed, which will then allow the remainder of the zinc sheets to be fitted.

The roofers have also slated the roof section above the crew training room and station office, and the windows are being installed with the brickwork detail around the windows in keeping with that of the former Masonic Lodge that was demolished to make way for the lifeboat station.

Ekki timber kerbs are being installed on the edges of the launch ramp, this timber is ideal for the marine environment as it lasts for many years with minimal maintenance required.

Handrails will then be fitted to the timber kerbs.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is building the new lifeboat station ahead of a formal adoption of The Portishead Lifeboat Trust when the station is built. This is according to the wishes of the charity’s trustees who agreed that an adoption

would take place once the RNLI had provided a new home that was fit for purpose.

Moorhouse Farm

Western Power has made the connection to the grid and installed a substation and connection box. An inverter cabinet will arrive on site in the middle of February, by which time the other infrastructure will be in place.

I

n 2014, Low Carbon Gordano (LCG), a community enterprise, invited members of the local community to invest in the building of a 1.8 Megawatt solar array on the edge of the Avonmouth industrial complex. Investors helped it hit target ahead of schedule and Moorhouse Farm solar array is now taking shape. Panels have been installed in one field and the majority of the frame tables are now in place across the site.

LCG worked with Avon Wildlife Trust to safeguard the existing wildlife on the site and carried out work to enhance the site’s biodiversity. Sarah Dale, the trusts chief ecologist, carried out a roosting bat survey and highlighted the trees that needed to be protected. She also found signs of water vole activity and advised the contractors of the steps they needed to take to protect this species. The final grid connection tests for the project should be carried out by the end of the month.

Broadchurch returns T

he much anticipated second series of ITV’s award-winning Broadchurch, which has recently returned to our screens, has given local tourism a boost.

Although the fictional town of Broadchurch is set in Dorset, many of the scenes were shot in and around Clevedon and in the first series some were filmed in Portishead.

The new series sees David Tennant reprising his role as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy and Olivia Colman returning as Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller. The returning cast includes Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan and Arthur Darvill, while new to series two are Charlotte Rampling, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Eve Myles and James D’Arcy. Once again the director is former Gordano School student James Strong, who grew up in Portishead.

To highlight some of the locations used in the series, North Somerset Council has put together a website - The Broadchurch trail - giving information about different locations and suggestions of walks in the area.

Ursula James, North Somerset Council’s tourism development officer, said: “Once again the filming generated a good deal of interest from the public. I’m sure there will be many twists and turns in the plot line as the series progresses, but the storyline has been kept firmly under wraps.

“We plan to update the online Broadchurch trail when the second series has finished so that we don’t give away any of the surprises undoubtedly in store, but the trail already includes featured locations such as Marine Lake, Poets Walk, Marshall’s Field and St Andrew’s Church, which became Broadchurch’s parish church of St Bede.”

One of the highlights of the trail is Hill Road, Clevedon’s thriving independent shopping area, which became Broadchurch High Street – the centre of a lot of action in both series. A vacant shop, formerly Seeleys, which was refurbished by the film crew to become the Broadchurch Echo, is now a local food and craft market. Traders on Hill Road got the idea to set up the market after seeing the fictional outdoor Broadchurch Market and set it up with the help of a grant from North Somerset

Council’s High Street Innovation Fund.

North Somerset Council says it promotes itself as a film friendly council recognising the economic benefits filming can bring into the area, and the growing interest in ‘film tourism’. There were 46 filming shoots in the district in 2014, from Abbots Pool and Portishead to Clevedon and Weston-superMare.

Gym-Savvy public view Gordano’s Gofitness The new £1.3m bespoke Gofitness build has been designed with functionality in mind. n open day at Portishead’s new Gofitness facility proved a hit with gym savvy members of the local community.

People aged 16 to 80 visited the brand new state-of-the-art facility provided by Gordano School Community Trust Sports Centre, in St Mary’s Road. The day provided an opportunity for everyone to try out the equipment and discover what is now available, with the fully trained staff team on hand to provide help and advice.

GoFitness, which opened in January, is the first gym in Portishead to invest in Myride apparatus.

This new technology allows users to navigate a set of recorded terrains in real time, and then clock their distances online and via mobile technology.

Support the next generation of local life savers

T

he nation’s leading first aid charity is looking for volunteers to support the next generation of life savers in North Somerset.

Youth leaders and managers are needed for St John Ambulance’s Badger and Cadet units in Portishead, Pill and Nailsea.

Dave Christophers, youth manager for the charity in the South West, said: “Ideally, we would like to hear from people interested

in working with our young volunteers, to help them learn first aid and other new skills.

“The programme is varied and ranges from photography to cooking and map reading, so volunteers can bring life experiences and knowledge to the organisation without having any prior first aid knowledge.

“We provide full training in life saving techniques that can be passed on to the next generation of first aiders and there is also the opportunity to study for qualifications in youth work.”

Badger sets are for five to 10-year-olds and cadet units cover the ages of 10-18.

Dave added: “We are not asking people to give huge amounts of their time – just one evening a week can make so much difference.

“Learning first aid is an important thing at any time of life but teaching children and teenagers can equip them with skills to make a difference between a life lost and a life saved from a young age.

“It builds their confidence, teaches them new skills and puts something back into the community.”

A

n exciting new day nursery will open in Portishead on March 2.

The founder and manager Jackie Hardie is a qualified reception teacher and has over 20 years experience in the Early Years.

For the past 12 years, she has been running Stepping Stones Training, a specialised Early Years consultancy and training business, supporting Early Years nurseries across the country. She has a proven track record of turning failing settings into outstanding settings and her reputation has taken her to an international level.

Jackie has worked with many international schools in South East Asia, helping them implement the British early years’ curriculum scheme. She is also a qualified Ofsted inspector.

Jackie has put all her unique knowledge and best practice expertise into creating a nursery in Portishead that offers excellent services and which addresses the needs of children at every stage of their developmental progress.

Co-op closes

T

his month sees the sad closure of the Co-op store in Portishead’s Wyndham Way. It is one of five Co-op stores sold to Aldi last year.

Co-op is now focussing on convenience stores and plans to open 120 convenience stores this year.

Reports that Co-op is to take over the Costcutter store in Avon Way were unconfirmed at the time of going to print, however a spokesperson for Co-operative Food said: “The Co-operative Food has a clear vision to be the best local food retailer in the UK and over the coming years our main focus will be to develop our existing convenience store estate. We are aware of a site in Portishead, but cannot comment on specific properties at this time.”

Robbery

ast month police charged five men in connection with an attempted robbery at Pill Post Office.

The men, who were carrying a bladed weapon, demanded money but made off empty handed. Officers stopped a car shortly after and arrested the five men, who were subsequently charged with attempted robbery, threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public place and aggravated vehicle taking. Anyone with information about the incident should call 101.

ruse Bereavement Care is a national organisation, with an international reputation, a charity which provides information and support to bereaved adults and children. Cruse provides face to face, group, telephone and website support both post – and pre-bereavement and the service provided by trained, experienced volunteers, is confidential and free.

A Cruse spokesperson said: “The death of someone close to you can be a profound

shock, even if the death was expected.

Every person`s experience of grief is unique and how we react will be influenced by many different things, including our age, personality, background, personal circumstances, previous experiences of bereavement and how we cope with loss.

“After a death you may initially feel shocked, numb, fear, anger, guilt, afraid and full of pain. At first it is likely that you will find it very difficult to accept what has happened. In the first few weeks you may have family and friends to help you. Later you may feel very much alone when trying to cope with practical and emotional changes in your life. All these feelings, which should lessen over time, are a normal reaction to what may be the most difficult experience of your life.

Portishead Cruse Bereavement Care was established in 1985. In 1988 Doreen Thomas, a trained

bereavement volunteer, took over and very successfully co-ordinated the work locally for over twenty six years, offering support to those in need of bereavement care. With the help of a dedicated team of volunteers she also worked extremely hard raising funds for Cruse. Following Doreen`s retirement last year, the group is currently looking for a volunteer to work with others to help with local fundraising for Cruse.

Portishead Cruse offers a monthly dropin between 10.30am-midday on the last Friday of each month in the Wesley Centre at the Methodist Church on the High Street.

Whether you go alone, or take along a friend or relative for moral support, you are assured a warm welcome from all members of the group, many of whom attend regularly because they have found support and friendship there. Bus service changes

S

ignificant changes to local bus services came into effect in January as First reviews its network in North Somerset.

There will be route changes to First commercial service X4/X5 from Sunday, January 11. All journeys will be numbered X5 and will operate from Weston via the M5 for a quicker journey towards Clevedon, Portishead and Cribbs Causeway.

Most journeys will also continue to Bristol Parkway railway station in North Bristol,

but the service will no longer serve Congresbury, Yatton or Kenn.

The council has worked with Carmel Bristol to extend service 88 to Yatton. Service 88 currently operates between Portishead and Clevedon, but from Sunday, January 11, it will also serve Yatton, ensuring the connection between Portishead and Clevedon.

his year Gordano Sports Centre, based at Gordano School and run by Gordano School Community Trust , opens up its brand new sports hall for the February half term activity programme.

Children’s Sport League, involving a wide variety of different sports, takes place on Monday February 16 to Wednesday February 18 between 10am-3pm.

This programme is ideal for those aged six to 11 years and will involve team games ranging from football and tag rugby to tennis and netball. Led by a team of dedicated sport staff, the programme includes prizes for the teams that gain the most points.

The cost is £13 a day, or bookings for the three days cost just £30.

Inflatable Fun Days will take place on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 at the sports centre.

Again, led by an experienced team of sport staff, there will be a whole host of fun and games including unlimited use of inflatables. The Inflatable Fun Days are also suited to children aged six to 11 years of age and the cost is £20 per day.

Penny Brohn - A part of the local community

T

he Penny Brohn Cancer Care Centre was founded in 1980.

It was originally located in Clifton and moved to Pill in 2007.

The founder’s Penny Brohn (herself living with a cancer diagnosis) and her friend Pat Pilkington realised that health is more than just what happens in our bodies. They wanted to offer people living with cancer, support for their mind, spirit and emotions alongside the physical impacts of the disease.

Penny and Pat realised that as a consequence of cancer and its treatment (radiotherapy and chemotherapy) people experience a wide range of emotional, physical and practical problems.

Taking inspiration from the various types of cancer and health care delivered around the world Pat and Penny saw the need to develop an approach to care that is tailored to an individual’s own needs. This included information and advice about healthy eating, physical activity and self-help techniques to reduce stress. This has become known as the Whole Person Approach.

These principles and philosophy are more relevant today than ever

with over 2.5 million people living with a cancer diagnosis. This is a consequence of an ageing population combined with earlier detection rates and better treatment.

The profound effects of what the Penny Brohn care can offer at the beautiful and tranquil five acre site in Pill is summed up by one client: “If I’m honest I initially didn’t think Penny Brohn was for me. So just turning up at the Centre for the first time was a challenge. But those fears quickly evaporated once I arrived in the beautiful building and after I’d soaked up the warmth and understanding of other clients and staff.And I came away feeling like I’d taken the first steps to regaining some kind of control over my life again.” Says Dave.

In order to help fund this unique service and to offer clients a range of cancer care products Penny Brohn has its own shop at the Centre.

the Penny Brohn shop sells a wide range of supplements, cancer related books, cards, body care, herbal teas, scarves, hats and health foodstuffs.

Products that are specific to help support cancer patients.

he grave of a historic Portishead character is to be repaired thanks to profits from a local history book.

The grave of Victor Halliwell sits in St Peter’s Churchyard. Victor was killed on Friday, June 13 1930 when he was on board Miss England II as one of the team of three men who were attempting to break the world speed record over water.

During the period following World War One, speed became an obsession with the British, and local man Victor Halliwell became a casualty of this craze on Lake Windermere. He perished with Sir Henry Segrave, who was the holder of two world speed records.

Victor’s parents bought The Homestead, formerly Down House Farm, at the end of Nore Road, Portishead, in October 1915.

They also bought a field nearby which was named Halliwell’s field. During the early 1930s plots were let out for weekend.

The land included an area of beach up to the high water mark where bathing cubicles were built along with a small café with a veranda.

There was also a

slipway with a floating raft moored to the beach and a fixed diving board.

Victor’s studies at Bristol University were interrupted when he joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. He rose through the ranks and he became a lieutenant and second officer in the newly formed Royal Air Force.

After the war he returned to university and Victor Halliwell’s body was found two later; graduated as a Bachelor of he had died instantly from a broken neck.

February School Holiday Activities

P

ortishead Youth Centre has been providing a full programme of school holiday activities for children aged eight and over for almost three years.

The holiday scheme runs from 8.30am5.30pm Monday to Friday, making it ideal for working parents who want to ensure their children are well cared for, while having plenty of fun during school breaks.

Tennis coaching, five-a-side football and basketball are just some of the sports on

offer throughout the February half term, while music, street dance, drama, arts and crafts are also available.

Volunteers work alongside qualified and experienced staff to ensure the children get the most out of the play scheme. To make a booking, arrange a tour of the Harbour Road centre, or find out more information, call Kim on 01275 842461.

Charity Music & Quiz Night

T

he Rock Project will be hosting a charity evening at the Portishead Youth Centre on Friday February 13.

Arrive at 7pm to make up teams of six people for a fun quiz and students from The Rock Project’s Nailsea, Clevedon, Portishead and Ashton sessions will perform between the rounds. Entry is £5 for adults and includes a hot or cold drink, under 16’s are free when accompanied by an adult.

Last year’s charity night was a great success and all money raised will go to the Youth Centre. The café will also be open on the night serving hot food and snacks. Everyone is welcome at what promises to be a great evening of entertainment.

New antenatal classes

A

new local antenatal course is being launched in Portishead for 2015.

Qualified and experienced antenatal teacher and mum-ofthree Nicola Farthing (picured far right) is teaming up with Revd Tina Hodgett (pictured right) of Portishead Church of England to launch Birth and Beyond.

Birth and Beyond courses will run over five Monday evenings, 7.30-9.30pm, at Portishead Children’s Centre, West Hill. The first course starts in February, with courses available throughout the year to suit whenever your baby is due.

Nicola says: “I love babies! Not only have I had three of my own, I have also

supported many couples over the years as they have prepared to meet their own new babies. There is something so special and wonderful about meeting a new human being for the first time!

It fills me with awe and wonder each and every time.”

Having a baby is an amazing and challenging life changing event and many people can’t wait to tell their own stories of pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. When you are expecting a baby, you want to plan for the birth and find out as much information as you can to allow you to make your own decisions, but of course, the birth is just the beginning of this new chapter of family life.

Tina adds: “Birth and Beyond will give parents time and space as they consider their options for birth, but just as importantly, we are passionate about giving parents a strong foundation for their future family life. Q:

I have recently got a puppy, Ana and I want to get her microchipped. She is 12 weeks old, can you tell me how it works and when I should get it done?

A:

Microchips are a wonderful invention because they help us track the owners of so many lost pets that get brought in to us. A microchip is a small implant, about the size of a grain of rice. It is injected into the scruff of Ana’s neck and will sit under the skin for the rest of her life, even as she grows up.

Each microchip contains a unique ID number which can be read by a microchip scanner. The microchip itself does not hold your personal information; this is held separately on a large database and will include the pet’s details and those of the owner.

Although a microchip will not help you track Ana if she goes missing (It does not contain a GPS tracker but I am sure this

is only a matter of time!) it means that if she goes missing and is found, you can be traced and she can be returned. All vets, rescue centres and police stations have microchip scanners and will check pets for a microchip.

It is important to remember to keep your details up to date with the database company as there is no point having your pet microchipped if the database has a phone number from five years ago!

A microchip can be injected at any age but it is a fairly large needle so we will often leave puppies until they are at least 12 weeks old.

Mystery surrounds the origins of Valentine’s Day with some claims that the annual celebration dates back as early as the fourth century BC. Fame at Gordano Students from Gordano School will perform the musical Fame this month. With a cast of over 60, students and staff have been working really hard choreographing and orchestrating the dance numbers and songs from the hit musical.

Fame promises to repeat the success of last year’s performance, Midsummer Night’s Dream, which saw sell out shows over the run of the production. With the same production team from last year, hopes are high for an electrifying performance.

Stefan Chilcott, producing the show, says: “We’re incredibly lucky to have some first class talent at school, with accomplished actors, singers, dancers and musicians. This performance will certainly make the audience remember their name!”

Evening performances are set to go ahead from February 3-5, and will take place in Gordano School’s main hall. Beer Festival

he Clarence House 2015 Beer Festival takes place in the Gordano Suite on February 6 and 7 with something special not only for real ale enthusiasts, but for rugby fans and jazz lovers too.

The festival, which is free to attend, will be hosting at least 12 guest ales from

around the UK. In addition, the Wales V England game in the Rugby Six Nations championships on Friday February 6, will be screened live at the festival on its opening night.

On the Saturday the festival will feature live jazz.

Clarence House will be following the Rugby Six Nations, screening all matches on their big screens. Membership to the sports and

social club is just £20 for the year, or £10 for senior citizens and guests/visitors are welcome. The club, with lounge, bar and function room, skittle alleys and pool/snooker tables, is a great place in which to relax and socialise. With a walled garden and play equipment it is 14th Century Inn also ideal for families.

The club shows regular live sport, offers lunches with daily specials and provides fantastic pre-booked Sunday lunches.

Meeting rooms are also available and it has a large car park.

With the Christmas and New Year period being a popular time to pop the question, this month I’m going to be talking all about honeymoons.

For many couples the choice of honeymoon destination is almost as important as the wedding itself. So what’s the best way to make sure your trip is truly memorable?

My first advice to honeymoon couples is to make sure you plan the time of year you want to go away. Although the summer months maybe popular for your wedding, this is often a less desirable time to visit certain destinations, with the Caribbean facing the hurricane season or the Southern Hemisphere in winter. Similarly

an Easter wedding may rule out the Indian Ocean due to monsoon rains.

Don’t forget, you don’t have to go on honeymoon straight after the special day but it may be worth planning your wedding date around the honeymoon you want!

This leads nicely into my next tip which is to plan well in advance.

Typically the earlier you book, the cheaper the price will be with published air fares. You will also have your pick of the room types and honeymoon upgrades that may be available for early booking. In addition, this allows you to save up over a longer period. When you mention hypnotherapy people often think of someone clucking like a chicken in the hands of an entertainer, how does that compare to the hypnotherapy you provide?

Hypnotherapy is a natural state of being, it involves going in to a relaxed trance, something most people do all the time without realising, like when daydreaming. The thing to remember is you are in complete control of your actions. Hypnotherapy can’t make you do something unless you want to, this is also true of stage hypnotists, trust would need to be there for you to act on it.

Hypnotherapy can help the brain adjust and alter negative thinking or behaviours to help people make the changes they want in their lives, to become closer to the self they recognise.

Sometimes clients come to me because they are suffering panic attacks, headaches, stomach churning or can’t sleep. It often isn’t until they are in front of me that the penny drops and they realise this is all stress related.

Obsessional traits are common too, from constantly checking doors and windows to being late for work because of a morning cleaning ritual, which cannot be left until it is perfect. Others obsess about hygiene.

ver the past 20 years, there has been a significant rise in the number of couples experiencing fertility issues. This can be attributed to a wide-range of reasons affecting both the man and the woman, such as lifestyle, diet, age, stress, sexually transmitted disease and occupational and environmental hazards.

Medical advancements have meant that many couples who would have previously been childless, have gone on to successfully have a family. However, getting pregnant can be remarkably complex, and there is still a lot that remains unknown. Almost a third of couples who seek medical help are told they have ‘unexplained infertility’.

In my experience, of almost 20 years, reflexology can have a hugely positive impact on couples who have been trying to conceive, and I have been overwhelmed by the success it has brought. Many couples that have come to me, have become pregnant within six treatments of reflexology.

With or without medical intervention, the process can be extremely complicated, stressful and all-consuming. Allotment Virgins Stroke survivor Lori Rowsell and her family have been sharing their allotment experiences with Gordano Living readers ever since they were first allocated a plot at Gertie Gales allotments in North Weston several years ago. Lori credits the allotment as an aid to her recovery in the early days following her stroke. In return for her regular blog, Gordano Living is pleased to make a monthly donation to the Portishead Stroke Group which runs a drop in café at Clarence House in Portishead High Street from 10.30am on the first Friday of each month. The drop-in sessions offer good company, practical advice and can point stroke survivors of all ages in the right direction for help and support. Lori can’t stress enough that this is not just for ‘old’ people.

Lori was in her forties when she experienced a stroke and has been surprised to find out how many young people are affected by strokes.

Carers and friends are also very welcome.

A

s there’s not much happening at the allotment this month, there is plenty of time for thinking. Should the monthly count be dropped from the blog? Should the name change – are we still allotment virgins? Should we give up on sprouts altogether?!

Well the count was just a reminder to us that we’ve been working the plot for almost four years but it’s perhaps more useful to know at what point of the year we are, so that might change and in future perhaps we’ll just use the month to head up the blog in future. The name has to stay the same, as every time I think we’ve cracked it we go back to being complete novices….. for example the sprouts. There were just enough for Christmas day which from twelve stalks was dismal. The whitefly definitely won, but we won’t give up; we will beat them!

In addition to the sprouts, the plan for this year’s crops is beginning to form. For us there are always carrots, onions, beetroot, runner beans, parsnips and broccoli. The herb bed will be freshened up and the asparagus moves into its second year with fingers still crossed for success. So that’s half the beds allocated and the others are open to offers. Leeks are off the list simply because we don’t eat enough of them.

Kale worked well last year so gets another go and sweetcorn comes back onto the list as it was missed. And I suppose we can’t turn our backs on courgettes.

Important additions are pumpkins (we always succumb to buying them at Halloween so let’s grow our own) and most importantly cauliflowers. Ours have never worked and there were fab ones at Gertie’s last year which made us really jealous. I’m told the secret is in the seed and to seek out Amazing. Let’s see if they are amazing!

Fry the onion, celery, carrots and parsnips for 10 mins.

Add the stock and peas, season add the mustard and put into a pie dish.

Mash potatoes with butter and milk.

Season and stir in the cheese.

Spoon on top of the vegetables and bake at 220°C for 25 mins until the potatoes are golden.
