FULL BRAKE FLUID CHANGE Brake fluid is hygroscopic. This means that it will readily absorb moisture. Moisture in your brake fluid does two things. When the brake fluid becomes hot under hard braking, the water in the brake fluid boils. This causes steam voids in the brake system which causes a dramatic reduction in braking capability. In severe cases it can cause braking capability to be lost completely. Moisture in the brake system also causes internal corrosion of brake system components resulting in loss of braking capability. Therefore, it is extremely important to change your brake fluid at the specified intervals

Morgan-Westley awarded community cup

M

att and Rosemary Westley have been awarded the John Daws Cup for their outstanding contribution to the Portishead community. The cup is awarded annually by Portishead in Bloom, in memory of the one of its founder members, the late John Daws. It is awarded to members of the community in recognition of their contribution to the town and is accompanied by a cheque for £100, provided by The North Somerset Times. Matt and Rosemary have been trading in Portishead since 1966. The couple run stationery and print shop Morgan-Westley at 28-30 High Street. Handing over the cup to Matt, Portishead

in Bloom’s Angela Cooper said: “As far back as I can remember Morgan-Westley has supported the community in numerous ways. They don’t shout about it, they quietly go about supporting a huge number of community groups and causes without asking for anything in return.” Morgan-Westley is always willing to sell tickets and programmes for Portishead events and productions and stocks books by numerous local authors. It will also often be a point of call for petitions when residents are fighting for Portishead causes. The shop produces a range of bespoke goods promoting Portishead including its own Portishead Calendar which is currently on sale in the shop. It has produced a series of jigsaws too, detailing landmarks and images relating to the town. From the sale of their creations, Matt and Rosemary make a donation to many good causes; these include Portishead Christmas Lights, the Portishead Lifeboat and Portishead in Bloom, to name but a few. The shop also uses its window display to continually champion.

Well done Morgan Westley, a big thank you to Matt, Rosemary and their team

Mike Roberts likes to make life comfortable

ristol Recliners have been making people’s lives more comfortable since they started in business thanks to made to measure standard and second hand rise and recline chairs. They design and supply bespoke, standard and second hand electrical Rise and Recline chairs as well as manual furniture to the public and trade. They offer a comprehensive range of styles with a vast range of fabrics so you will always be able to choose a style to match your interior decor and soft furnishings. For local consultant Mike Roberts it was through personal experience that he set the business up. Mike said: “I set it up after the shock of my nan buying a chair for £3000 and getting totally ripped off. “I then looked locally and found it all rather expensive, so decided to start my own business providing chairs offering a better service and price. “Although I can supply standard chairs and totally bespoke chairs, I have found there is a really good business in second hand chairs, most of which still look like new and have hardly been used.” Bristol Recliners will visit you in your home and assess your requirements, demonstrate a chair and agree with you the best way forward, to help you feel more comfortable, safe and relaxed. Mike added: “If things go well I will look to extend the range to other mobility aids, new beds and second hand scooters.” For more information, contact Mike on 07838 893037.

ontact the Elderly is the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people. The festive season is a time when those living alone can feel even more lonely than usual, which is why Gordano Living has chosen this month to appeal to the community to support this organisation. Contact the Elderly organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people (aged 75+) who live alone, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month. Each older person is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home for the afternoon. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by

companionship. Costa in Portishead High Street has been hosting Sunday afternoon coffee and cakes for group members for the past year, offering not only the venue but complimentary refreshments too. At the

November meeting volunteer co-ordinators Rachel and Warren Nash and a number of group members thanked them for their continued support. If you are over 75 and spend a great deal of time alone, why not give Rachel and Warren a call? There are currently a few spaces available for new members. Rachel and Warren are also appealing for more Maintaining Independence Sunday afternoon hosts. They are looking for and Activity ordinary people to invite members of the group in for a cup of tea and a cake just twice during the year. Gromits find a new home at Oakham

A

ward winning Oakham Treasures, based in Portbury, is delighted to announce that it is now home to two Gromits – A Mandrill’s Best Friend and Creature Comforts. It follows the museum’s successful bids at the recent Gromit Unleashed auction, which raised £2.3 million for the Bristol Children’s Hospital charity, The Grand Appeal. The unique visitor attraction, which hosts one of the largest collections of vintage retail items and farm machinery in the UK, will be displaying both Gromits in its restaurant area so that visitors can continue to enjoy seeing them for free. Oakham Treasures is owned by avid collector Keith Sherrell, a fifth generation West Country farmer. Keith said: “We’re delighted to give these Gromits a new home at Oakham and are even more thrilled that our donation has gone to such a worthy cause. “The Gromit trail was a huge success this

summer; however not everyone got the chance to see all the Gromits so we will be proudly displaying them in our restaurant area for the next few months and hope people will come to see them in their new home.” Oakham Treasures boasts thousands of items of interest to people of all ages and hosts a number of mock up stores to give visitors a glimpse of the past, these include: a haberdashery, pharmacy, off licence, hardware store, tobacconist, confectionery shop and a grocers from days gone by. Displays include extremely rare and unique items some of which were made locally, such as Frys, Babycham, Wills Tobacco and Harvey’s Bristol Cream. Recent additions to the collections include: an Austin Coupe in perfect condition from 1923, a huge collection of shaving mugs and a spanner collection that was kindly donated to Oakham. If you haven’t visited Oakham Treasures yet, make time to do so, it’s right on your doorstep.

Strategies praised by Ofsted

t Katherine’s School, in Ham Green has experienced a full Ofsted Inspection based on the new rigorous framework. The head teacher, Christopher Sammons (pictured below) and his new strategies for the school’s improvement were well recognised and praised. The lead inspector said: “Since his appointment in September 2012, the new head teacher has changed the ethos and culture of the school. He and his new senior team have raised expectations significantly.” Inspectors commented on how well young people grow as rounded individuals and St Katherine’s excellent reputation for pastoral care was recognised. A full copy of the report can be viewed via the school’s website www. st-katherines.nsomerset.sch.uk

Gromit Fever 2

nd Portishead Mohican Scouts (pictured right) embraced Gromit fever over the summer months with a challenge to visit and photograph themselves with the Gromit Unleashed Gromits. Last month they were all given the opportunity to display their creative talents and present the pictures to the leaders of the scout troop. The entries were then judged by Mohican scout leaders, who all agreed the quality of entrants was of a high standard. Prizes were awarded for the best presentations with all the other scouts receiving runners up prizes for their fantastic efforts.

Guide Promise A

new guide promise came into effect in September following a nationwide consultation of 44,000 people. In the new promise the words “to be true to myself and develop my beliefs” have replaced “to love my God”, and the words “to serve the Queen and my community” have replaced “to serve the Queen and my country”. Girlguiding UK explained the updated Promise, which continues to emphasise the spiritual development they offer, will open up the guiding family to more potential members. Girls from 3rd Redcliffe Bay Guides (pictured left) thought about ways they could keep the different elements of the promise in everyday life by writing their ideas on paper leaves and attaching them all to a promise tree.

The festival, which was jointly organised by The Galley, Portishead Quays Marina and volunteers from the Portishead Lifeboat Trust, raised a fabulous £841 for a new boathouse for the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat, which will be built by the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI). This was later topped up, by a donation from Quay Marinas Ltd, to make it a full £1000. One of the highlights of the festival was a demonstration by the Pyronaut fire ship which was built in Bristol in 1934 by Charles Hill. The Pyronaut and tug boat John King, which are now based at M Shed in Bristol, joined the festival together with the training ship Pride of Bristol. Visitors to the event also had the opportunity to experience the exciting jet-boots, watch displays by the Newfoundland Dogs rescue team and watch the lock in action as the sailing boats returned from the festival race. The crowds enjoyed music by local bands Poteen, The Barnacle Buoys and Last Orders. In addition Stormy Stan, the RNLI mascot, made an appearance, much to the delight of young children. Watch this space for next summer’s up and coming events at Portishead Quays Marina, planning is already underway for the 2014 festival.

Skittlers help charity M

embers of the Portishead Working Men’s Club Telstars skittles team helped marshal a ladies driving challenge to raise money for Marie Curies Cancer Care. The team gave up their time to travel to Merryfield Air Base where the driving challenge raised over £13,500. The local skittlers are no strangers to raising money for Marie Curie as they have supported the charity since 2004. Over the years they have raised over £19,000 for the cause by holding a series of different events which included a skittles match on the top of mount Snowdon and an underground match in Wookey Hole caves. Other fundraising activities have ranged from race nights to bucket collections at supermarkets.

T

he ‘Lions Club of Portishead’ has donated £1000 by taking part in a charity’s ‘£1,000 Challenge’, which will support local young cancer patients. Nick Gough of the Lions said: “The club recognises the tremendous work done by the ‘Teenage Cancer Trust’ and we’re more than happy to rise to the challenge of providing money to this fantastic endeavour. We hope this publicity will spur other groups and businesses to also take on the challenge.” The money raised by the Lions Club will go towards the construction of the first specialist Teenage Cancer Trust unit for young patients living in the South West. Teenage Cancer Trust is building a state-of-the-art unit in the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre as University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is the designated teenage and young adult principal treatment centre for the South West. launches new library

a Foundation, a charity based in Portishead High Street, has completed a two-year project to deliver a community library to the Nkomazi region of South Africa. Portishead residents may remember Bella Natura, a not for profit organic babies clothing shop, run for Za by charity director, mum and businesswoman Jayne Morris-Thurgood, who lives in Weston in Gordano. The shop was set up to support a generation of vulnerable and orphaned children in Nkomazi, whose lives have been deeply affected by AIDS. It moved from its original premises in Stoke Road to 36 High Street, where it still has its offices on the first floor. Jayne and her fellow directors closed the shop when they moved the project on, securing funding to set up Thulile, The Librarian

Portishead Christmas Lights

A

s we explained last issue, Portishead Christmas lights are organised purely by volunteers who work tirelessly all year round to raise funds to help keep the festive bulbs burning. In addition to the fundraising events and activities, completion of grant applications and planning the switch on, there are thousands of bulbs to be tested, health and safety issues to be adhered to and the physical work of putting them up at the end of November and taking them back down in January. This is all done by unpaid volunteers who give their time and experience generously, to make sure Portishead has one of the best Christmas lights displays in the south west.

History of Portishead Christmas Lights

M

embers of the Portishead community refused to see the end of the illuminations in the early 1970s, when a

local government re-organisation resulted in the council announcing they could no longer put up the wonderful Christmas lights Portishead had enjoyed for many years. A group of friends sitting having a drink in what was then the Bay Hotel, decided it would be a real shame if the lights disappeared, so they got their thinking caps on. Bryan Newman, John Pearson, David Lewis, Pat Marsden, Terry Macey and Ken Windibank to name but a few, pulled resources together and between them they came up with a few oil drums filled with sand, some long poles and some dangerously modified vehicles with which they put the lights up. A few donations helped with costs and the same scenario went on for a couple of years before a formal lights committee was formed. With a helping hand from other members of the community (Mrs MacDonald from Victoria Square stepped in to act as secretary, Dave Hill and Cliff Freeman were prominent figures in the town, who joined the committee) the future of the lights was cemented. So it’s that community spirit that

Victorian Evening

P

ortishead’s Victorian Evening is one of the main fundraising activities for the town’s Christmas lights. It started in the 1970s as a few stalls in the White Lion car park. It comprised a few community group stalls, supported by supporters of the lights, dressed in Victorian costume, marking the beginning of the festive season. The Victorian evening continues to be an annual event in the town. This year it takes place on Friday December 13, stretching from the beginning of High Street to Roath Road. The centre of the High Street is closed to traffic between 6.30pm – 9pm to allow stalls, sideshows and street entertainers to take over the centre of the

town. Many of the shops stay open late To book a stall at the Victorian evening and everyone is invited to dress in Victorian email lorraineschneider23@gmail.com. costume. I

have been teaching foreign languages for over 10 years and believe you can never be too young to start. There is plenty of research to support that from 6 months – 3 years children stop listening to foreign sounds, but from as little as one hour exposure a week you can maintain

these pathways, therefore giving your child a good start in languages. I have chosen to make the class multilingual to give each child the foundation sounds in several languages rather than specialising too early. The class sings traditional nursery rhymes in French, German and Spanish every week using a variety of different actions for co-ordination, instruments and soft toys for visual and auditory stimulation along with other props. We run sessions for two different age

groups LinguaBubs, for those from three months to walking and LinguaTots, for those who are walking to preschool age. Free taster sessions are available. Classes run in Portishead on Monday and Thursday mornings. The new term starts week commencing Monday 6th Jan and runs for six weeks. In 2014 we will also be starting after school multilingual classes for primary school aged children up to year two. These classes have limited places. Please check out the website for more details.

Soft Play Christmas Party

T

he bumper soft play pre-school Christmas party at Portishead Youth Centre takes place on Friday December 20. All under fives are welcome along with their parents or carers. The ticket only event includes Christmas soft play from 9.30am-1.30pm. There will also be a buffet and a raffle. Tickets cost £6, or £3 for those under a year old, which includes a visit to Santa in his grotto and a quality gift. Tickets can be purchased from the centre in Harbour Road any week day morning. ing and Sign has now developed a brand new programme, Sing and Sign Babes that is suitable for babies from birth! The aim of this programme

is to build the exceptionally important framework for good communication through Sing and Sign’s magic ingredient... music! The classes will incorporate sensory stimulation along with the Sing and Sign staple ingredients of repetition, anticipation, praise and of course Jessie Cat; as well as some basic signing. These sessions are suitable for babies 0-6 months who are not yet crawling (rolling over or sitting up is fine). The new course will be held at The Playport, Portishead starting in January 2014 alongside Sing and Sign classes for babies from 6 months to 2 years. Contact Helen Hill for further information.

This means older teenagers can meet up in the warm and dry during the winter months, without the fear of being hurried out once they have finished their drinks, as they may in commercial cafes and snack bars. This is quite different to youth club. It costs nothing to enter the café, drinks and a bite to eat can be purchased from the coffee bar and the pool table, music facilities and computers are all available for use. There will be no organised activities. The youth café is open at Portishead Youth Centre in Harbour Road on Wednesday between 6.30pm9.30pm. Please make the most of this wonderful facility we have in our town.

he Rock Project is currently recruiting for the new term which starts in January. This exciting rock school operates in Portishead, Nailsea and Clevedon on a weekly basis. With junior and senior sessions in place, youngsters can sign up for guitar, drums and bass tuition in a fun and relaxed environment. The two hour, weekly sessions combine professional tuition with lots of other music related activities ranging from jamming and singing to music quizzes, a fun way to learn theory! Students can also work towards nationally recognised qualifications if they wish to do so. The musicians will be encouraged to form bands at the school and a rock concert, staged at the end of the year, allows them to show off their talents to friends and family. Charity support from St Katherine’s

S

t Katherine’s School, in Ham Green, has close working relationships with a number of “Global Partners” including schools and colleges across Europe and Africa. For the past two years, one group of students has been working with the Za Foundation a charity that funds several projects supporting the needs of the local population in the area of Nkomazi, South Africa, near the borders with Swaziland and Mozambique. This particular area of South Africa faces huge socio-economic problems with an HIV infection rate of almost 40% and unemployment of around 70%. Za work closely with St Katherine’s link

school: Njeyeza High. Over the past year a student group raised £800 for Njeyeza High through various fundraising events. This money will be spent making the South African school’s learning environment rich and inspiring. Last year the SK8 group worked with other St Katherine’s students to stage “Pangaea” - a music festival which featured performances from students and also the Zakhele group, young people from South Africa who use drama, music and dance to raise awareness of HIV. This festival raised £1000 and will be used to help the Zakhele group continue their amazing work. Katie Battensby, an English teacher at St

Katherine’s and co-ordinator of this project said: “This has been an amazing project for our students to work on; they have also been keen bloggers keeping everyone up to date with their activities.” On November 4 St Katherine’s held a special lunch in their restaurant ”The Leaf at Ham Green” in order to present the directors of the Za Foundation with a cheque for £1800. The photo shows Lisa Penney and Kate Birnie, directors from the Za Foundation with the students.

Hosted by The Friends of Brandon Hill, the boys have embarked on a geophysical survey of a site of Civil War defences on Brandon Hill never investigated before. Pupils got to use the latest computer technology, in the form of an Archaeoscan, to uncover the secrets of what is below the surface. The survey revealed more defences from Bristol’s time as a civil-war battlefront including an underground ditch and trench system near the remains of Water Fort. Brandon Hill was the site of much activity during the English Civil War and is the site of battlements and fortifications, long since covered over. The computer-generated scan images are displayed on the board outside the junior school office. The Portishead & Bristol Lifeboat Lifeline - Winter 2013 We have great pleasure bringing you this season’s Lifeline, the quarterly newsletter issued by the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat Trust. Read on to find out more about the organisation and to find out how you can support the lifeboat, including the building of a new boathouse in Portishead.

Message from the Chairman

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone once again for all your support this year so far. It has been wonderful to see so many members of our community supporting our NEW BOATHOUSE APPEAL

We are now all orange!

The Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) has replaced our lease boat with a completely orange one as you will see from the photo above. It is an Atlantic 75 with 2 Yamaha 75hp engines which can take her up to 32knots. She carries crew of three and has room to carry up to 20 casualties in a shout scenario.

Give the crew a wave if you see them training on a Tuesday evening or Sunday morning! If you would like volunteers to talk about the lifeboat and what is involved, or you would like a sea safety talk at your club, organisation or school just contact the team at the email address below.

The Portishead & Bristol Lifeboat Lifeline Winter 2013 Launch Authority Profile – Bob Crane Bob is the LA, he takes the call from the Coastguard in an emergency situation, we asked him.......

have some 26,000nm of practical sailing including an ocean crossing.

How long have you been involved with the Trust? 16 years, taking on various roles, DLA, Operations Director and currently I am the LA and a trustee.

What is your day job? At 71 I retired some years ago and wonder how I ever found the time to go to work. I am lucky as I am fit and do the same fitness tests as the crew.

What does LA stand for and were you crew before that? LA is the Launch Authority. Our lifeboat is a “Declared” resource for the “Saving of lives at sea”. The initial request to launch comes to me (or one of my deputies, DLA’s) usually from Swansea Coast Guard. The crew is paged, selected and the launch crew organised. Once the lifeboat is in the water the helmsman takes over responsibility, until recovery where I resume responsibility followed by the usual paperwork. I haven’t been crew (always too old, I would much sooner send the youngsters out ) but

Is it important to have experience on the water with boats before you join the lifeboat as a volunteer? It is of course beneficial to have practical nautical experience, but not absolutely essential as the training you will be given is second to none. What would be your ideal holiday? I am well travelled but I would love to take a holiday trekking the Andes Trail or cruise the Galapagos Islands.

Happy 90th birthday to our dear friend and supporter Mrs Barbara Palmer From all at the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat

The Portishead & Bristol Lifeboat Lifeline Winter 2013 An Update

2

013 has been yet another busy year for The Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat. At the time of going to press the lifeboat has been launched to emergencies on 20 occasions, rendering assistance to 34 people, and notably assisting other emergency services including saving one life at Ladye Bay. The callouts have ranged from engine and equipment failures, to people cut off by the tide and in particular the sand bank between Clevedon Pier and Wains Hill, where once again the lifeboat was called on two occasions. As well as the emergency launches, members of the trust have been busy with

fundraising activities and station visits. More than 500 children have visited the station and had the opportunity to hear more about the trust and see the lifeboat and the current cramped facilities. Trusts members and crew have also been busy visiting local schools and clubs, briefing them about beach safety. The adoption of the trust by the RNLI is ongoing, and at the present time they have secured the former Masonic Lodge by the Pier which will be replaced with a new purpose built lifeboat station for the volunteers. This will offer a changing room, training room, retail shop and a dedicated room for the boat and launching tractor to be stored. Once the new station has been completed the formal adoption of the Portishead & Bristol Lifeboat will happen. The RNLI is currently at the tendering stage for contractors but hopes work will start very soon. It is hoped that the station will be operational by November 2014

n December there are always many jobs to do when it comes to plants and the garden, from the final tidying up of the year, mulching beds, cleaning the greenhouse and sorting your tools ready for next year. But there is another very important job that needs careful attention at this time of year. Buying the family Christmas tree! Here are a few tips to help you get the perfect tree. 1. Decide what type you want, Norway Spruces are the traditional Christmas tree (which have the lovely pine scent too), Nordman Firs, Fraser Firs, Nobles and Blue Spruces are varieties which are known to hold their needles much better (but are more expensive to buy). 2. Measure where the tree is going to go, including its width! 3. A good healthy tree should have fresh looking and flexible needles and when tapped only a few fresh green needles should fall (it is normal for some older inner needles to drop). 4. Ask the retailer when and where the tree was cut from. Obviously the longer it has been cut the more chance it will not be as fresh. British trees tend to be cut later due to travelling distance. 5. Any tree you buy should be out of its net so you can see what you’re getting. Then the garden centre can net it for you. 6. If possible have a water retaining stand. Cut off a couple of cm from the base of the tree,

this will help it absorb water. They are just like cut flowers and will continue to take up water, so always make sure your stand is topped up. 7. To help prevent drying out try and keep the tree away from radiators and other heat sources. 8. If you’re unsure always ask for help it’s important to get it right, no one wants to get home and be told “There’s not enough room at the bottom for any presents!”, “It’s too bushy I can’t get the baubles on” or “Why did you get that one it’s bent!”. Bearing in mind the above don’t leave it too late to choose your tree! Have a very Happy Christmas!

Ideal gifts for feet

he clocks have changed, autumn is here and the countdown to Christmas has begun. We all love to keep our feet, and especially our kids’ feet, warm and snug, whether we are indoors or outdoors. SoleLution, your local independent family shoe shop in Portishead High Street and Clifton Village, has a lovely selection of slippers and boots that will do just that for you, your little ones and their grandparents they make a great Christmas present too! Tanya Marriott, mum of two small children and owner of SoleLution, offers a word of advice when buying slippers. “Slippers are great to keep your little one’s feet warm indoors, but they can be dangerous too. Make sure they stay firmly on the child’s foot and are not too big to avoid trips and falls on the stairs!” At SoleLution, Tanya and her team are always there to give you advice and help you get the right fit.

Hypnotherapy can help at Christmas By Rae Arundel of Harbourside Hypnotherapy

F

or some people, the festive season exacerbates depression and anxiety. For some, this time of year worsens feelings of isolation, depression and loneliness, while for others, the pressures associated with having a great time, managing finances and family can create a tremendous feeling of anxiety. Typical sources of stress include trying to balance all the demands of family with shopping and the social engagements, unrealistic expectations, financial worries and sometimes bereavement, which can be very difficult at this time of year. Even the pressure of being with people (often family) that you would not choose to be with can lead to tension. Symptoms can range from headaches, excessive drinking, comfort eating, insomnia and trouble concentrating, to mood swings, fatigue and tearfulness.

Hypnotherapy can help by assisting people to overcome negative thinking styles while in a safe, supportive environment. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) uses practical, modern and well-researched strategies to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short period of time, enabling the client to focus on the positive aspects of their lives which encourages a shift in perspective. At Harbourside Hypnotherapy I have been able to help many clients deal with holiday sadness, depression and anxiety and it’s great to know that I can proactively help clients have a happier festive period. Rae works as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist in Portishead and also in St George’s Surgery, Worle. She offers a FREE initial consultation and can be contacted on 075 840 35873, or visit www.harbourside-hypnotherapy.co.uk.

Charity shop calls on locals to de-clutter before Christmas

ortishead’s Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) shop in the High Street is calling on the local community to get ready for the festive season by having a de-clutter and donating any unwanted goods to the shop. Due to its continuing popularity the shop is in urgent need of additional unwanted items to turn into valuable funds for CHSW this Christmas. The charity is looking for donations of good quality clothing, bags, books, toys, games, CD’s, DVD’s and more. Profits from the shop help CHSW to keep supporting local life-limited children and their families at the charity’s nearby

Countdown to Christmas

The Saturdays Switch On The Christmas Lights At The Mall At Cribbs Causeway Whilst Gordano Living is an avid supporter of the Shop Local campaign, the Gordano Media team appreciates you can’t get absolutely everything you need in our home town. As we also don’t have an ice rink in Portishead, we headed to Cribbs for a Gordano Living evening out!

T

he Saturdays launched Bristol into Christmas by switching on the Christmas lights at The Mall, Cribbs

Causeway on November 7. The band treated ten thousand fans to an exclusive performance of their most popular hits having switched on the Christmas lights assisted by four Help for Heroes (H4H) bears. Free tickets were given away in the lead up to the event and fans were encouraged to donate to the charity. The Help for Heroes team is still counting the money raised from collections during the night which it is hoped will raise in the region of £20,000. Bryn and Emma Parry, Co-Founders of H4H said “Help for Heroes is all about ‘doing your bit’ and the lights switch on at The Mall was a wonderful example of people having a great deal of fun while they raise money for a good cause. We will be able to use the money raised to provide practical and direct support

Countdown to Christmas

Stained Glass Christmas Biscuits Here’s a festive receipt from Jayne Leaker of CrocPot Catering (see ad on page 80) Such an easy recipe and fun to make with the children. Wrap up in cellophane for a great Christmas Pressie! Makes approx 12- 14 Biscuits Preparation 15 mins plus 30 mins chilling Cook in 20 mins

Ingredients • Sunflower oil, for greasing • 175g plain flour, plus extra • 1 tsp ground ginger (optional) • 100g butter, cold, cut into chunks • 50g golden caster sugar • 1 tbsp milk • 12 -14 fruit-flavoured boiled sweets • Icing sugar, to dust or decorate • About 120cm thin ribbon, to decorate

Method 1.

Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Grease 2 large non-stick baking sheets with oil. Whizz the flour, ginger, zest and butter with 1⁄2 tsp salt to fine crumbs in a food processor. Pulse in the sugar and milk, then turn out and knead briefly on a floured surface until smooth. Wrap in cling film, then chill for about 30 mins.

2.

Flour the work surface again, then roll out the dough to the thickness of a £1 coin. Use 7cm cutters to cut out shapes, then use 4cm cutters to cut out the middles. Re-roll leftover pieces. Make a hole in the top of each biscuit, then carefully lift onto the baking sheets.

the biscuits are golden brown and the middles have melted.

4.

Leave to harden, then transfer to a rack to cool. Thread with ribbon, then dust with icing sugar. Will keep for a month, but best eaten within 3 days.

3.

Crush the sweets in their wrappers with a rolling pin, then put the pieces into the middles of the biscuits – the sweets should be level with the top of the dough. Bake for 15-20 mins or until

High Street History

F H Halliday & Son Ltd – your local funeral director and the longest running business in Portishead High Street.

O

perating since 1880 F H Halliday & Son is the oldest business still in operation in Portishead High

Street In the 1800s the Halliday family were carpenters, house maintenance operatives, painters and decorators employing eight people based at its current address at 115 High Street. One day someone came into the woodworking shop and asked them to make a coffin and it was from then that they entered in to the business of funeral directors. Records show that from 1880 they started carrying out full funeral services providing horse drawn hearses and horse drawn mourning coaches, offering all the provisions you would expect from a funeral director. The business was founded by Frederick Halliday and passed to his son William (Bill) and in the late 1950’s his nephew Edward (Eddie) Lawrence came to join him in his

business with his wife Kitty Lawrence. Eddie worked in the carpentry workshop and Kitty ran the office and the decorating business. Eddie’s son Glyn joined the company after leaving school at the age of 17. In 1966 Bill Halliday retired and the company was formed into a Limited Company, which was owned by the Lawrence family. Today the company is still owned by the Lawrence family - Glyn Lawrence and his wife Helen. They are accompanied by their general manager, Matthew Aldridge and his team. Matthew joined the Company in 2005 and has extensive experience in the funeral trade having previously worked for an independent family firm based in Berkshire. Matthew’s wife Tracey works alongside him and the couple and their children live in the house, alongside the High Street business, where the founder Frederick Halliday once lived with his family. The family says they are very proud to be able to follow the company tradition in this way. Michael Collins, who also lives in Portishead has recently joined the firm as funeral director’s assistant, he is pictured on the far right, photographed with Matthew and Tracey.

Why choose an independent funeral director?

W

hile many small funeral directors have been swallowed up by large national organisations, F H Halliday & Son has remained an independent family business. It is proud of its history and of the personal service it has provided for the community for more than 100 years. Unlike national corporations, as an independent funeral director, F H Haliday & Son, answer only to you, the client. They are not under pressure to make large profits for the benefit of shareholders and they are not bound to particular suppliers. This means they can be as flexible as they need to be to suit you. At Halliday’s they hold traditional values, whilst realising the importance of choice and the need to be able to also take a modern view on funeral services. Traditional, green and alternative funerals are all available. Pre-paid funeral plans are available at Halliday’s and Matthew or a member of his team will be very happy to discuss these with no obligation if readers would like to find out more. F H Halliday & Son is a member of the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) and as such is dedicated in providing the best possible service to the families they serve.

Dryathlon

T

his month Matthew (pictured right) is taking part in Cancer Research UK’s dryathlon. Sponsored by his friends, family and associates, Matthew will be giving up alcohol for both December and January to help raise funds for the important charity. He said: “The dryathlon challenges people to not drink any alcohol for the month of January and to ask anyone who would have bought them a drink to donate the cost to the charity instead. However, I thought January was a bit too easy after Christmas so I have increased the challenge by starting my dryathlon on December 1, so I can’t touch a drop of alcohol all over Christmas and New Year!” People can donate or read more about the challenge by visiting Matthew’s Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/Matthew-Aldridge-dryathlete.

The Black Horse Celebrating 21 years

This month Nick and Jane Evans celebrate 21 years at the Black Horse. Along with their team, they are set to continue to provide a wide selection of well kept ales and ciders and expand upon the excellent reputation for home made food, all enjoyed in the unique atmosphere of this amazing old inn. The couple invite you to join them for a special anniversary celebration on Sunday December 8 at 5pm when swing blues band the Damn Busters will be making a special appearance for your entertainment.

THE WHOLE TEAM AT THE BLACK HORSE GIVES THANKS TO ALL THEIR CUSTOMERS FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND WISH THEM A LOVELY CHRISTMAS AND FANTASTIC NEW YEAR! More about ‘The Kicker’

The kicker, as it is affectionately known, is an experience not to be missed. Set in the tranquil countryside of Clapton-inGordano, this 14th Century inn is steeped in charm and character. Where else will you see horses tethered up outside and tractors in the car park? The locals are extremely friendly as are the staff, who offer a cheery smile and plenty of conversation. This secluded inn originates from a time when, long before Christopher Columbus is said to have discovered the Americas, the local pub was the heart and soul of the village. In more modern times, having changed landlords only a handful of times during the 20th Century, the present owners Nick and Jane Evans extend a friendly and cordial welcome to locals and visitors alike, and maintain the tradition of well kept beers, ales and ciders served with simple, tasteful lunchtime fayre. The home cooked food and filled baguettes served Monday to Saturday lunchtime 12-2.30pm are highly recommended and if you’re not driving, the real ales

and cider are definitely worth sampling. In summer all of these can be enjoyed in the lovely beer garden, patios and terraces surrounding the pub and even in winter, on a crisp Sunday afternoon you will find the locals wrapped up warm, sitting outside in the heart of the Gordano Valley, with their pints in hand, watching the world go by. A programme of musical entertainment usually runs from around 8pm on Monday evenings from September until late spring. This includes solo artists and duos, trios and small bands. Keep an eye on the web site www.thekicker.co.uk or join them on Facebook to find out more.

Boos Malcolm’s fascinating insight into ships passing through

I

t is often forgotten by many newer residents in the town that Portishead was a hive of activity on the water in the early 1960s to the mid 1970s. Almost every tide brought a variety of ships passing Battery Point while visits to Avonmouth Docks, using the ferry across the River Avon between Pill and Shirehampton provided another insight into the vessels passing through. They included classic cargo liners, tramp ships, tankers and coasters of many major companies, in addition to war-built vessels. Merchant ship enthusiast and well-know ship photographer Malcolm Cranfield has written a new book that features 105 stunning black/white photographs of the ships seen in Bristol during the ten years from 1964-1974 in 96 pages with detailed captions about the histories of the ships, their owners and its trade. Bristol Port and Channel Nostalgia, published by Coastal Shipping Publications in Portishead, includes ships owned locally, those owned by well-known British lines and a variety of foreign operators. This fascinating book is £16 and available from Summit Leisure, Wyndham Way, Portishead, or direct from www. coastalshipping.co.uk or 01275 846178.

The Camper Vans

P

ortishead mum Sally Schofield has written a children’s book called The Camper Vans which will be on sale at High Down Infant School Christmas Fair on Saturday December 7 from 10.30am. Sally explains: “I first realised just how popular Classic VW Camper Vans were when I dropped my two boys off at nursery in my 1978 VW Camper Van, Olive! All the children smiled and waved enthusiastically as I drove passed. One evening I decided to write a story for my two boys about Camper Vans using my father-in-law’s business, Alan H Schofield Classic Volkswagen, as my inspiration. 11 years later The Camper Vans book has finally materialised! It’s a little late for my two boys but hopefully pre-school boys and girls will enjoy the story as much as I have enjoyed writing it.”

Portishead – No place to hide

P

oet Roy Hewetson’s CD - ‘Portishead – no place to hide’, accompanied by his illustrated book of the same name has already proved popular with many locals. An ideal Christmas gift, Roy casts a critical eye on the massive redevelopment of the town following a study spanning more than 10 years. His poem ‘His Town’ imagines an old resident returning to the town ‘he knew, compact, serene, beyond a band of belted green’ reflecting upon its evolvement. There is clear criticism of the ignorance of authority and description of the impact on traditional ways of life. However, in his concluding poem ‘Community’ Roy digs down into the heart of the town. Roy’s book is available at Wicketty Woo, the post office in the Village Quarter and in the Clevedon and Nailsea music shops.

hether you are shopping for food, gifts, treats or party wear this Christmas make sure you checkout your local shops before you head to the big stores in out of town destinations. Abby also offers anti-wrinkle injections, one of the most popular non-surgical antiageing treatments for smoothing lines and wrinkles, ideal for frown lines and creases between the brows, eye lines, crow’s feet and laughter lines. I can honestly say it is not a painful process and even though there is an option available for anaesthetic cream, I found no need as there is little more than a slight discomfort while receiving the treatment.” Abby offers all clients a full after care service. Robert John in the running to style for international company

R

obert John are in the running to style for international company When Robert John hairdressing salon in Portishead agreed to style hair for a photographic shoot at Clynol’s ASK Academy with award winning photographer Richard Miles, they had no idea of the career prospects that lay ahead for them. Stylists Ben Price and Lucy Fitzpatrick from the Portishead salon, attended the shoot hosted by Clynol Salon Exclusive in London. The opportunity allowed them to widen their hairdressing skills from life behind the chair, breaking into session work. Little did they know their images could be used by the brand to front a national marketing campaign. “The colour work that Robert John stylists produce is really fantastic and we are looking at using the shots in a national campaign to promote brunettes,” said Stephen Mcdowell, technical manager for Clynol. “The final decision is with the international team but all the signs are looking good. We love working with salons like Robert John, our brand strap line is ‘Shaped by Stylists’ and it’s really important for us that talented stylists are at the heart of what we do.”

Working under the creative direction of celebrity hairdresser, Phil Smith and a team of the best in their field, the duo created styles that work on camera as well as the naked eye. With the help of Lee Pearson on make-up, Clare Frith’s exquisite styling and the shoot knowledge of PR guru Louise Wood, Ben and Lucy created some stunning shots that have blown away the team at Clynol. Ben is absolutely over the moon that the organisation has shortlisted their work for a big marketing campaign. He said: “We booked onto the course to learn something new. This was an opportunity to extend our salon skills into session work which is totally different to life on the salon floor. We’re so pleased with the work that we’ve created and to have Clynol shortlist it out of all the photography that a global company like this has access to is an amazing honour.”

To book in with these showstopping stylists visit the Robert John salon at Cabstand, Portishead.

Robert John has had another very successful year with both stylists and trainees achieving numerous goals in-house and competing in hairdressing championships. Co-owner Jenny Hancock said: “We have had a really good year but we can’t be successful without our hair and beauty clients who are the heart of our business. We would like to say a big thank you to them for their continued support and wish each and every one of them a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Although we do treat a lot of back and neck pain with great success we also deal with extremity joints such as hips, knees, feet, shoulders, elbows and wrists and their associated problems. Another common misconception about Chiropractors is that we only manipulate, but all of the chiropractors at Portishead Chiropractic Clinic have many more strings to their bows. These include: medical acupuncture, kinesiology taping, rehabilitation exercises, gait analysis and orthotics. These are all excellent tools for treating extremity joint problems. Kinesiology taping has really taken the sport and rehabilitation world by storm in recent years, most of us will have watched sporting events and noticed the brightly coloured tape worn by some of the athletes. This is excellent for sports injuries and others musculoskeletal impairments providing support 24 hours a day and facilitating muscular activation and healing. Medical acupuncture can provide significant pain relief and is a quick and efficient way to reduce muscular

spasm and tension. Most extremity joint problems arise as a result of trauma, repetitive stain or degeneration and the majority of sports injuries involve the extremities. We also assess whether you have any issues within your kinematic chain which are leading you to injury, this is assessing how your whole body moves together e.g whether your ankle problem is causing your hip problem or vice versa! This helps you to really get to the root of your problems and can stop you getting the same injury time and time again. Some of the most common extremity problems we treat are rotator cuff strains and impingement in the shoulder, tennis elbow, ‘runner’s knee’, ankle sprains, Achilles tendinitis, piriformis syndrome in the hip, bursitis and osteoarthritis of the hips and knees to name but a few!

My eyelash experience at What’s Beauty By Gordano Living’s sales executive Tanya Archer

I

received a warm welcome from Kelly at What’s Beauty, who took me to the beauty room, set up very professionally within her home. I had a full consultation and discussed what I wanted my lashes to look like and then we chose the eyelash sizes together which was great because, believe it or not, there were lots of styles and sizes to choose from and some expert advice was appreciated. AFTER Once she has selected the lashes for me, Kelly made me very comfortable on the couch with relaxing music in the background creating a very tranquil atmosphere. Kelly prepared my eyes by cleansing, then protecting them with shields. As I closed my eyes, she began the treatment. I felt very much at ease, but also very excited to see what my eyelashes would look like. The treatment lasted approximately two hours, including the consultation.

BEFORE

AFTER

When the treatment was complete and Kelly showed me the results in the mirror I wasn’t disappointed. I was extremely pleased with the result. Kelly then provided me with a brush and complete instructions on how to look after my new and fabulous lashes. I am a mother of two with a busy job, I very rarely have the opportunity to put on a full face of makeup. Having had my lashes done, I not only look and feel better, but it is great not to have to wear mascara. No mascara is required at all, as the lashes look wonderfully thicker and longer. I am so pleased with the results. It saves me time in the mornings and leaves my lashes looking good whatever the time of day or night! All my friends have commented on how nice they look too, What’s Beauty definitely gets 10 out of 10 from me.

ffective removal of skin disorders and blemishes using Electrolysis is proving a hit with clients at Nailsea’s Beauty Incorporated. “A wide diversity of skin blemishes can be quickly and easily treated with immediate and effective results offering blemish free smooth skin,” says Beauty Inc’s owner and qualified practitioner Anne Walton-Davies. “And our clients are discovering that these advanced cosmetic procedures don’t have to be expensive.” Beauty Incorporated offers a service that is fairly unique in the area - a non-surgical procedure to remove blemishes such as

skin tags, lumps, thread veins, warts and verrucas. With the same results in many cases, the service offered by Beauty Inc can cost as little as £20 per area, compared to more than £200 for each surgical removal in many beauty cosmetic clinics. Anne added: “People are welcome to make an appointment for a free, no obligation consultation to discuss the treatment and how they can benefit from it. Our clients have been amazed at the results.” If you would like to talk to Anne about removal of any unsightly areas give Beauty Incorporated a call on 01275 795515

K

evin Clacher has helped raise almost £2000 for the NSPCC by cycling 200 miles from London to Paris. The Portishead resident, who works for ADT/ Tyco Fire and Security, did the challenge with two work colleagues, cycling from Tower Bridge to the Eiffel Tower, via Dieppe. Kevin, who did daily updates and commentary on the trip using a helmet camera, said: “Everyone in France was very friendly and we met other cyclists on the way that were doing the same route. The roads were quiet and they really do cater for cyclists over there.” The 63-year-old trained at Portishead gym Betterbodies for the challenge and said: “When I retire I will do the ride again and take a tent this time so I can experience it even more. The scenery was superb. “We are going to keep riding as a group and do another challenge in the future, possibly from Paris to Lyon. “I would recommend the ride to anyone who wants a comfortable cycling challenge. If anyone is interested and would like to know anything about the route they can email me on clachers2@gmail.com.”

Lifeboat crew in training

T

he Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat crew were invited to put their fitness to the test at The Hub in Portishead. Training director Ian Lazenby said: “It was a great team building event and we cannot thank Andy enough for giving us this session. It is important for us to cover all aspects of training including fitness so that when we are out and about on the water we are physically and mentally prepared for the tasks we have to take on.”

Exercise of the Month: Crucifix Flyes Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try. This month he talks us through Crucifix Flyes.

H

ere’s yet another “old-school” exercise – Crucifix Flyes - these may appear a little alien to you, but may be a valuable addition to your shoulder workout to increase variety and aid mobility. My issue with many “functional” exercises performed in gyms is that they are not truly practical and useful, whereas some less attractive exercises working less muscle groups are, namely Crucifix Flyes. Look at the exercise movement (refer to photos). How many times do you repeat this, whether it’s taking something out of the cupboard, painting, waving erratically, cleaning the windows, washing the car, etc? Have you ever “twinged” your shoulder performing any of these tasks or just felt general muscle soreness afterward? If so, read on. If not, make sure that you don’t and read on. Similarly to other flye and stiff-arm exercises I’ve demonstrated, the hand

and arm move through an arc while the elbow is kept at a constant angle (held stiff ). Because these exercises use the arms as levers at their longest possible length, the amount of weight that can be lifted is significantly reduced. This is not an exercise for ego’s, but, if you’ve got increased mobility, are injuryfree, and your shoulder complex is strong in all plains of movement, this will transfer to other aspects of your workout and you will ultimately become stronger both inside and outside of the gym. It might help if I explain that this exercise came to be in my repertoire many years ago by following the training exploits of 2001 World’s Strongest Man Svend “Viking Power” Karlsen. However, I wouldn’t advocate a heavy weight to perform this exercise. Instead, just light mobility work and only on the proviso that you suffer no impingement or any other contraindication. Remember, we’re in the game of keeping you injuryfree and progressing, not aggravation of or risking further injury. An example of how I incorporate Crucifix Flyes in to my training, here’s a giant-set shoulder mobility workout that I choose

to perform: External Rotation, StiffArm Circles (forward), Stiff-Arm Circles (backward), and Crucifix Flyes. You can watch a video demonstration of this at www.gymprofessor.com or by scanning the QR code. I choose to use my Globe Gripz workout device during these exercises to improve ergonomics. For Christmas, you can now purchase these direct at www.GlobeGripz.co.uk at 25% off RRP or visit our local dealer Gym Ratz of Avonmouth.

ark in Leigh Woods, on North Road and walk across the Suspension Bridge. Building of Brunel’s original design was thwarted in 1831 by the Bristol Riots. Work restarted in 1836 and was completed in 1864, five years after Brunel’s death. Take the footpath to the right of the toll booth on the Clifton side and walk down onto Sion Hill. Follow Sion Hill until it becomes Wellington Terrace. At the end of the terrace, turn left and climb the steps up onto Royal York Crescent. Building of the Crescent began in 1791 but it was not completed until 1820. Take time to enjoy the spectacular views across Bristol. At the end of the Royal York Crescent turn right into Regent Street and walk slightly

of trees known as Birdcage Walk. It was originally St. Andrew’s Walk, named after the medieval Church of St Andrew. The original site of the church is inside the gates you have just come through. First mention of the church is found in 1154 and it was partially rebuilt in 1654, since then there have been many enlargements and alterations until it was destroyed in the Bristol blitz in 1940. At the end of the tunnel cross The Fosseway, go over the zebra crossing and turn left onto the path through the gardens of Victoria Square. The square itself was originally designed to resemble a palace rather than houses! Leave Victoria Square and go under the “Pharmacy Arch” into Boyces Avenue. Cross the main road and turn left then right into bustling Princess Victoria Street. Take the second right into The Mall with its upmarket shops and restaurants and walk to the top. Portishead in Bloom Projects By Chairman - Sandy Tebbutt W e have had another very busy year this year and I would like to highlight a few of our projects. These include the information board for the Lake Grounds which was unveiled by David Pasley in July. Jemma Cooper unveiled the information board on the Weston, Clevedon and Portishead Railway on Wyndham Way and with the RHS saying we should always be mindful of our heritage, this was an extremely worthwhile project for us with the light railway group. The meadow at Esplanade Meadow with its mown paths looked great again this year. Children planted bluebells there in April and we should see them flower next year. We have also transplanted ox-eye daisies from the orchard on Wyndham Way to the Esplanade. The trees there will have poppy

seed scattered on them for the centenary of the beginning of World War One next year and we are also hoping to do this on the roundabouts on Weatherly Way. We have put 100s of bulbs in Rodmoor Gardens and elsewhere and narcissi on the roundabout outside Haven Lodge for the benefit of the elderly residents. We put in 100 camassias in groups along Wyndham Way, anemone blanda at the orchard trees and wild daffodils and snakeshead fritillaries at our wildflower meadow at the beginning of Sheepway. We at long last planted up the Jubilee bed at the new library and there should be a stone going in soon to celebrate 150 years of our Horticultural Society.

Owner Ben Swift said: “This time of year provides the ideal opportunity to carry out many of those jobs in the garden, of which tree surgery is one of the most vital.

The trees are going into their dormant stage and this is a prime time to carry out jobs such as pollarding, crown reductions, dead wooding, trimming native and conifer hedges and general tree inspections prior to those winter storms. Many trees require planning consent when in a conservation area or if they have a tree preservation order on them. At Swift tree surgery they offer this complete service at no extra cost. Ben added: “We will explain the procedure to the client, advise them of the correct work to be carried out and then complete the planning process from start to end, ensuring our customers don’t have the inconvenience of the process.” No Job is too big or too small for Swift Tree Surgery. Gardening tips for December

25%

L

uckily there isn’t a lot to do in the garden this month with the rain, frost and high winds which are common for December. Keep an eye on your winter protection structures to make sure they are still securely in place and will prevent ponds and stand pipes from freezing. If you have a greenhouse, make sure all your greenhouse heaters work. It’s time to harvest apples and pears as well as leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and any remaining root crops.

Allotment Virgins Stroke survivor Lori Rowsell and her family have been sharing their experiences with Gordano Living readers since they were first allocated an allotment at the Gertie Gale allotments in North Weston more than two years ago. Gordano Living makes a small donation to the Portishead stroke drop-in centre each month in return for Lori’s contribution.

Update from Clifton’s Estate Agents By Paul Kingston of Cliftons Estate Agents, now at Kestrel Court, Portishead.

For the past five months director Paul Kingston has been sharing his knowledge and expertise on moving home with Gordano Living readers. Paul has written an in depth guide to selling your home, broken down in to seven simple steps which is available by calling 844434. Paul has been presenting excerpts from the guide in Gordano Living each month but for December he is taking a break from the guide to bring us news on the current housing market.

looking forward to Step 6 to selling your home, we will continue our guide in January. Although all predictions for the property market at the beginning of 2013 were of pending doom and gloom it has actually turned out to be one of some prosperity. It has been nothing like the past, but a noticeable and definite upward trend, especially in the BS20 area. Since June prices have probably risen between 5 and 10 percent, dependant on the type of property. This is for both residential sales and the rental market. There seem to be a few reasons to why the market is moving so well in our immediate location. At Cliftons we have a large residential sales department, letting and property management, a land and development department and offer an independent mortgage service. With experts in all these closely related businesses we are able to predict the ever-changing trends far quicker than many of our competitors. At this moment in time Portishead is attracting a lot of wealth from Bristol and many families that have up to now resided in areas like Clifton and Sneyd Park are looking to move s another in this direction. One of the main attractions year draws appears to be the excellent schooling on to an end I offer here. All the local primary schools thought readers have high Ofsted ratings with Gordano may be interested in Secondary School boasting an ‘Outstanding’ an overview of the Ofsted rating. market this year and Portishead also hosts the main police head my predictions for quarters in Valley Road, not only providing 2014. I apologies a great deal of employment but also to those who were contributing to the reasons why Portishead is recognised as a safe and secure town, with one of the lowest crime rates in the West Country. Surrounded by picturesque countryside, a seafront and marina and with a variety of shops INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE and wonderful bars, cafes and restaurants, We offer the following services: Portishead is definitely • Savings & Investment • Inheritance Tax Planning a sought after place to • Protection & Insurance • Mortgage Solutions live. supply and with demand still increasing as more people discover the town and recognise its benefits prices are noticeably increasing. This is good news for sellers and landlords but not such good news for those looking to buy or rent. I predict the local market will stay reasonably healthy during 2014 and that prices will be driven by affordability of borrowing. If you want to move to a bigger house or need to sell quickly there has never been a better time to do so. At Cliftons we can off you all the additional professional support you need when buying or selling. We strive to be the leading independent estate agency in the locations we cover, offering a completely personal and dedicated service. We always try to ensure that our clients regard us as professional,

friendly, flexible and committed. Whether you are looking to put your property on the market or thinking of making one of the biggest purchasing decisions of your life, be assured that we will be with you every step of the way. We have the resources and experience to guide you through. This is why clients come back to us time and time again. We don’t have to teach our staff to be nice, we just employ nice people, that way our clients know we are a company of great integrity and always leave us with a smile.

This just leaves me on behalf of all our staff, to thank everyone who has supported Cliftons during 2013 and all our clients who have put their faith in us to either sell or let their properties this year. We offer you an old Irish blessing for Christmas: ‘May you be blessed with the spirit of the season which is PEACE, the gladness of the season which is HOPE and the heart of the season which is LOVE. And in the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship and never in want.’ Happy Christmas to you all. Clifton, Bristol: 0117 946 6363 Park Lane, London: 0207 409 8331

Motors

Gordano Living gets to Drive the Fastest Ferrari Ever

By John Cant

T

he new Ferrari F12 has 730bhp, which is the headline eye catching figure. It has 509lb ft of toque which takes it to 211mph maximum and 0 to 62mph in 3.1 seconds, 0 to 100 in 6.5 seconds and 0 to 124mph in 8.5 seconds; that makes it Ferrari’s fastest ever road car. If you want more power than that you can only really get it in production cars costing at least three times as much.

This car is devastatingly fast as you would expect with 90% of maximum acceleration available from 2000rpm with instant pick up and response all the way to 8000rpm from its V12, 6.3ltr naturally aspirated engine. Accelerate flat out from 30mph and just 2.3 seconds later you will hit 70mph, in an F12 you will never yearn for more power or a faster better dual clutch automatic

gear shift for its speed and smoothness. As the revs rise the F12 Berlinetta sounds incredible and you find yourself wanting to give it full power just to hear the sound as it accelerates at licence shredding speeds. Having said that, it is ridiculous to say a car with 730bhp is a doddle to drive but it really is very approachable and easy as it is so precise and well engineered with the brakes, steering, throttle and gearbox all doing exactly what you expect. It is a very elegant car and you won’t find spoilers and wings on the new model. This type of Ferrari is the most heavily used as owners tend to do more miles and drive them every day, hence it has to be comfortable, reliable and practical (the boot extends to 500 litres with the load divider removed which is a lot for a supercar), as well as provide the high performance driving thrills. As this is a V12 Ferrari the costs are amusingly high with a list price of £239,354 but this could easily go up to nearer £300,000 with the options available.

The good news is Ferrari provides a free seven year maintenance/service scheme which is very good but it won’t help you fuel or tax your F12 which achieved only 13mpg driving hard on a variety of roads,

but am told this will rise to 18mpg on a run. This is a true super car dominated by its immense performance and there is no other vehicle like it. My thanks to Carrs Ferrari of Exeter.

Please return your completed form to Carey’s shop or send to Portishead Christmas Lights Pet Memorial Tree - 86 Slade Road, Portishead BS20 6BB. Photos of pets to be remembered can be emailed to jonandtessa.lewis@virgin.net or hard copies can be sent to the Slade Road address but please include a SAE if you want your photo returned.

All proceeds will go to Portishead Christmas Lights.

n the run-up to Christmas 2012, one of the volunteers asked if it would be possible to remember a much-loved pet with a donation and a picture on the Tree of Light slideshow which appears in Freeman’s window. At the time it was decided that it could cause distress or offence to combine a memorial for pets with one for people. However, it was also decided that provided there was a separate tree and a separate slideshow, in a separate location, it was a good idea to give residents the opportunity to remember much loved pets, while at the same time helping raise funds for Portishead Christmas Lights. The memorial tree for pets will be erected over Carey’s DIY shop and a slideshow will be displayed in the window of Carey’s at 17 High Street. If you would like to sponsor the Memorial Tree for Pets and remember a much loved pet simply fill in the sponsorship form on this feature (also available at Carey’s DIY shop or it can also be downloaded from www.portisheadshristmaslights.co.uk) and post it to Tessa Lewis, Secretary of Portishead Christmas Lights committee. Alternatively, you can leave completed forms and cheques for Tessa’s attention at Carey’s. If you would like a picture of your pet to appear on the slideshow, please email the picture (JPEG format please) to Tessa in parallel to your posted application form and cheque. Your pet’s photo and message will appear in the slideshow showing in Carey’s window throughout December. All proceeds will go towards running and improving Portishead Christmas Lights.

Portishead vet practice is officially ‘Cool for Cats’

V

ale Vets in Portishead has been awarded the prestigious gold status as a Cat Friendly Clinic by International Cat Care (ICC). It is one of just 30 practices in the country to achieve this. The gold status means the practice has achieved certain ‘cat friendly’ requirements set out by the ICC. Vale Vets has actually gone beyond the requirements of the gold standard and has now also installed separate waiting rooms for cats and for dogs. Vale Vet, Louise Alexander is particularly excited about the certification as she is passionate about cats. She said: “Cats do not travel well and hate being away from home in a place where the sounds and smells are unfamiliar. They will be

particularly stressed if they have to share space with dogs, which is why are so excited that we have been able to make space for a cat only waiting room.” To achieve gold status, Vale Vets has a hospital ward for in-patients dedicated to cats and larger cat friendly cages for hospitalised cats. The vets and nurses have had to demonstrate how knowledgeable they are about cats, that they have thought about the cats’ specific needs and have designed their clinic to accommodate them. Head Nurse, Nikki Pitts will be very happy to show round anyone who would like to see behind the scenes at the practice and explain to them exactly what makes Vale Vets ‘cool for cats’.

Adopt a cat

n the past Gordano Living readers have successfully adopted rescued cats through the charity HEART. Portishead animal lover Sally King gives her time freely to save unwanted cats and dogs from being destroyed. In her spare time the 41-year-old mum, who also runs a pet care service looking after animals in their own homes while their families are away, helps run HEART, the animal rescue organisation. HEART takes in unwanted pets, finds them temporary foster homes and then works hard to find permanent loving homes for them. HEART currently has a number of cats desperately in need of a new home so if you can offer an unwanted pet a home please call Sally, without any obligation, on 01275 848297 or 07929871350.

A pet is for life not just for Christmas

T

he holiday season is traditionally a time of year when people add four-legged friends to their families. Children aren’t at school and adults are on leave from work making it convenient to adopt a pet, however, The Lost Dogs’ Home urges families to think about pets beyond the holidays. Cute puppies soon grow in to larger dogs, cuddly kittens soon mature and it is important to think to the future before buying a pet. Veterinary costs, the daily commitment to training, exercise, boarding fees when you go on holidays and how pets will fit in to your lifestyle all have to be serious considerations before you buy a pet. May is one of the busiest months for rescue centres for abandoned pets and many of the admissions are attributed to families who have not properly thought through the decision to purchase a pet at Christmas time, especially kittens and puppies.

Private mileage in company cars

Q:

: My employee has a company car and historically, he has always had a benefit for the car itself and the fuel - because he doesn’t reimburse me for any fuel he uses for private journeys. Is there any way we can reduce his benefits in kind, because they’re costing him a lot on tax now.

A:

This may sound a bit extreme, but you could discuss the company no longer paying for his fuel. Whilst this

Lloyds Bank Lloyds TSB in Portishead High Street has reverted back to Lloyds Bank. Colin Hughes, a local resident who has banked with the branch for more than 60 years, was asked to cut a ribbon to mark the occasion. He said: “I hope the bank will continue as before, the staff are extremely efficient and treat my family and I like friends.”

Business may sound expensive for him, if you sit down and do the calculations, you may actually find he is better off this wayparticularly if you intend to increase his salary as a result of him losing his fuel benefit. He could then charge the company for any business mileage he does, using the advisory fuel rates. The other alternative is that the company continues to pay for all of his fuel, but the company charges the employee for all of his private mileage- again using the advisory fuel rates. In either case, the fuel benefit could be reduced down to nil if you can meet all of the requirements. Please note that due to the frequently changing fuel prices, HM Revenue & Customs regularly updates the advisory fuel rates, so always check their website for the latest figures here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cars/advisory_fuel_current. htm. How to quickly secure your WordPress website

Q:

I have a WordPress website and have heard they can be vulnerable to attacks from hackers, how can I help prevent this?

A:

We are going to assume that your website is regularly backed up and that you are running the latest version of WordPress as this is the number one most important step to secure your website! 1. Often the problem isn’t with WordPress but with your computer. Make sure your security software is up-to-date and that you regularly carry out virus checks. Remember, no amount of security in WordPress will make the slightest difference if there is a keylogger on your computer. 2. Where possible avoid using free WordPress themes. Problems with the themes account for 29% of hacked WordPress blogs. Free themes from sources other than WordPress are often packed with

malicious code which will undermine your website from the outset. 3. Beware of bugs associated with plugins. Make sure you are running the most up-to-date version of all active plugins and remove any unused plugins and themes (even if they are deactivated). You can always add them again later if you need to. 4. Drop admin. Choose a username that is just as secure as your password. Unless your first name is known only to you and contains random punctuation we don’t recommend that either. Yep, it’s a pain to have to remember cY5n#I#oGtxW1G but nowhere near as much of a pain as having to deal with a hacked website. If you would like us to help with your website or have any other questions, just visit www.portisheadwebdesign.co.uk or call us on 01275 759197.
