Introduction Welcome to our new monthly community magazine!

After several months of hard work we are finally able to deliver Everything Portishead to your door. This magazine is for Portishead People and Businesses. We want you to enjoy the magazine and hope you will find it interesting and useful.

I moved to Portishead just two years ago and think it’s a fantastic town, my family and I love it! Despite there being some good local newspapers, magazines and directories available in the town, when we arrived here we found it difficult to find a comprehensive publication that told us everything we wanted to know. We desperately wanted a handy reference magazine that told us what was going on, where to shop, as well as let us know who our local trades people were. We wanted to know everything about Portishead and since then it has been my ambition to produce something to satisfy those needs.

So ...Everything Portishead will be delivered free of charge to your door each month. We want to bring you, our readers, a regular supply of community news, items of interest, some fun and games and an integral, easy to use, business directory.

Charity of the Month Each month we will be choosing a local charity, club or good cause to donate 5% of any profit the magazine makes with a minimum of £100. This month a new cancer support group has been selected.

Every second counts The group is a follow on from a fundraising campaign organised by a band of friends over the past few years.

Mark Harris, Sara Brooks, Pat Hingley and her husband Vic formed Every Second Counts to raise money for Cancer Research after each of their lives were affected by cancer in some way. They have raised more than £10,000 by organising discos, balls and sponsored events and recently completed their annual sponsored four legged race around the pubs of Portishead.

Mark explained: “It was suggested by people who attend our functions that we start a cancer support group as the nearest one they knew of was in Weston, which some of them found difficult to get to.”

Having looked in to it further, the group found a number of people keen to join and so the

support group will be officially launched in the coming weeks.

Mark added: “Every Second Counts raises money for Cancer Research not the support group so we need to find a way of funding simple things like venue hire. A donation from Everything Portishead will be much appreciated, no matter how big or small. It will only take a small donation to get us up and running and we would like to thank them for starting us off.”

Portishead Youth This page is designed for the youth of Portishead. Once again we want to hear from you.

If you are a teenager in the town and want to express your views about the town, please write to us. Perhaps you would like to share your experiences of a club or youth organisation?

This month we have been taking a look around Portishead Youth Centre which is currently undergoing major modernisation and refurbishment.

Many teenagers in Portishead say it’s great that the town has lots of clubs and organised activities for young people but it lacks places to meet and socialise without structure.

The youth centre is one of the few places they can meet up in large numbers without criticism.

From the outside, the Harbour Road building is still very dated, but this will change if the current planning application is approved, to extend the premises and introduce a new, welcoming entrance.

Inside the building a modern coffee bar, state of the art toilets, fully equipped recording studio and spacious dance hall provide facilities the young people of Portishead are already making good use of.

With around 300 members, Youth Club runs on Monday to Thursday evenings for youngsters in school years seven and above. It is also open on alternate Friday evenings, but whilst all are welcome, priority is given to young people with special needs on these nights.

As well as providing a meeting place, the centre has dance tuition, music coaching and community radio training. Radio Dynamic broadcasts from the centre several times a year and young people can learn the ropes at Youth Club, in preparation.

Street dance group Audacity formed at the youth centre last year and has gone from strength to strength, making numerous public appearances and growing in numbers all the time.

The next Rock and Dance Academy takes place at the centre later this month.

Youngsters from the age of 11 up can join in proÂŹfessional music and dance coaching in subsidised sessions. These run for three full days a week over a two week period and conclude in a major public performance.

This will be the fourth Academy run at the centre.

The previous events have been so successful that they have been over subscribed, so call now to book your place.

Recent Events Recent Events – Portishead Carnival Once again the carnival was a huge success with thousands of people turning out to support the procession and give generously. The parade which started at the Lake Grounds, worked its way through the High Street until finishing at the show field.

The effort that went into the design of the floats was, as always, amazing and the attention to detail fantastic.

The colourful and very musical floats were designed and built by schools, businesses, community groups and individuals bringing the town together while at the same time raising money for local good causes. Winning participants are asked to nominate a charity to benefit from funds raised at carnival and organisers make generous donations to other local groups.

Special thanks go to Wendy Watkins and Jemma Cooper for their tireless work put into the carnival.

This annual event which has been running for about 70 years struggled for volunteer support in the late 1990s but the locals picked it up and rallied the troops to turn Portishead Carnival in to what it is today.

Long may it continue!

Raft Race

More than 30 years ago local newsagent Alan Smart, along with other well known High Street traders and community leaders started a crazy raft race which traditionally took place on the eve of carnival, at the Lake Grounds.

Compared to today’s event, it was relatively low key, but it was fun and all about community spirit, all the same.

It ran for many years, taken under the wing of the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat for many years.

However with volunteer support difficult to find it took a break in 2007 and 2008.

In 2009 a group of people who wanted to raise money for the local lifeboat, as well as other local charities, successfully resurrected the event.

Last month hundreds, if not thousands, of locals flocked to the Lake Grounds to see scores of people race across the lake on their home made rafts. Thousands of pounds were raised for charity and the whole community enjoyed a free, family fun day.

It can be a stressful time for owners if their dog shows concerning behaviour like hostility and my advice is prevention is better than cure. As well as helping your dog to be a well behaved pet, dog training can increase that special bond between owner and pet and gives you greater insight into how and why your dog behaves in the way it does.

Question of the month Q. How do we know which dog is suitable for our family and circumstances?

A. Choosing the right companion needs serious consideration. You will need to look at your family’s activity level and choose a breed which matches this. High energy breeds such as Gundogs (Springer Spaniels, Pointers, working Labradors) were bred for stamina and the ability to work long days in the field. Such dogs can make great companions, tend to be willing to work, and respond well to training.

However without adequate mental and physical exercise, these dogs will put their energy into a whole host of less desirable activities. High energy breeds will need around two hours of exercise everyday as a fully grown adult, and in addition required outlets for their mental energy such as agility, obedience or working dog trial training. Professional advice from staff at your local vets, your local dog trainer or pet behavioural specialist will be able to advise you on breeds suitable to your lifestyle.

Fallen Nails – Cod Steaks The giant ‘Fallen Nails’ wittily references Mustads Horse Nail factory, one of the town’s founding industries, its playfulness appealing to adults and children alike.

I’m sure, at one time or another, you have walked past one the many pieces of artwork around Portishead.

It wasn’t until I started to research the area that I realised quite how many pieces there are!

Arc of Angels – Rick Kirby (Front Cover) 'Arc of Angels’ in Central Park has a dual relevance to Portishead. Firstly the figures representing the new community, both unique and individual, yet gaining strength and support in their united formation. The piece also relates to the five radio towers that stood for many years on the site.

Full Fathom Five – Michael Dan Archer The sculpture was designed to evoke the atmosphere of the sea and to relate to historical and contemporary seafaring.

Text relating to the seafaring history of the site and including the names of ships, cargos, destinations and parts of a poem relating to the sea, has been inscribed on many of the columns.

Ship to Shore – Jon Buck “ Superimposed is a male head looking out to sea and above is his female counterpart facing the opposite direction. This makes reference to the dichotomy that was always present in seafaring communities. Ship to Shore was a type of communication used to connect the two.” Jon Buck

5 Viaggio – Louise Plant Viaggio is a sculpture that connects the past with the present. It evokes questions of time, movement and place. Once a high powered switching station occupied the Port Marine site, transformed now into a unique and special place to live.

Viaggio, meaning ‘journey’ is fabricated in corten steel. Reflecting the colours of the old town roofs and contrasting with the new, this material of industry will undergo its own journey, changing colours as it responds to the weather. The two boldly curving arcs of Viaggio move across each other and space, simultaneously exuding and containing energy. It is a sculpture on a scale that people can move through, around and exist within, experiencing for themselves their own personal journey.
