March is the first month of spring, which means it’s a great time to get stuck into your garden and any work you may have to do on your house.

This month also sees us celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday, March 11, proving the perfect excuse to spoil your mum and remind her how much you care.

The build up to Easter also takes place this month and there is plenty to do to get ready for it.

We also bring you the latest news from in and around Clevedon and Yatton, including a sad goodbye to one of Clevedon’s best loved festivals.

Students at Clevedon School are also celebrating after winning a prestigious debating competition.

Colourful flower arrangements will be in full bloom at the Yatton Spring Show this month, while there is also exciting news from Yatton Youth Club and its efforts to raise funds for renovation work at the club base. Campaign for new skatepark gets underway

levedon Community Bookshop is hosting an interactive story time afternoon with local children’s author Holly Edwards on Wednesday, March 28.

Listen to Holly read stories from her series about her rescue dogs, ‘The Ted & Tilly Adventures.’

Ted will even be attending the event, giving the children the chance to meet one of the stars of the series.

arents, young people and councillors came out in force to help kick-start a campaign for a new skatepark in Clevedon.

A skatepark steering group and fundraising team of users and residents has been formed to raise funds and ideas to rebuild Clevedon skatepark and the first public meeting was held last month in the Town Council offices.

The skatepark at Salthouse Fields, was originally built by Clevedon Town Council following public representations in 2003/04 to the design and style prevalent at that time of plywood and metal plate.

However time and over use have meant that the Salthouse Field Skate and Wheel Park needs an upgrade.

Inspiration is being drawn from the Nailsea Skatepark Project which raised more than £115,000 in just 20 months to create the current facility in Millennium Park, which officially opened in July 2016.

The group, including representatives from The Barn, YMCA, Users and the Town Council, are calling on residents and skatepark users to come together and raise the necessary funds to get new skate ramps built.

Volunteer workers keeping woodland in tip top condition

M

embers from two Clevedon charities have been working extremely hard to help manage woodland at one of Clevedon’s most exclusive venues.

A hard core of workers from both 1in4 Clevedon members and also residents of Andrew House, the supported hostel recently purchased by Re:Mission for the benefit of recovering addicts, have been working on Thursday mornings since the beginning of last August to help maintain the woodland in the grounds of Clevedon Hall.

They have cleared much of the redundant undergrowth and fallen, dying trees and vegetation. The overgrown woodland path around the estate, which leads to a private lake and pagoda, one of the huge draws when prospective couples are viewing Clevedon Hall for a possible wedding venue, has also been cleared.

Much of the reclaimed wood has been used to create cairns to supply housing for hibernating hedgehogs.

The link up developed when town councillor Judith West and Mike Anderson joined forces to organise resistance to the forcible closure at 1in4 and formed a Steering Group comprising Peter McCarthy, CEO of Clevedon Hall, Dr. Caroline Parfitt of the Clevedon Medical practice, Jenny Wildblood, a health service administrator and fundraiser, and Christina Lawley, an accountant.

Peter kindly volunteered the woodland surrounding Clevedon Hall as a location to introduce 1in4 Members to managing the woods in return for a donation to 1in4 Clevedon and Andrew House.

Mike Anderson, who helps organise the Thursday work mornings, said: “We have about four-six members every Thursday and they are doing a phenomenal job.

“What is startling is the very positive effect the work has had upon those engaged on the project. Alongside the very obvious beneficial effects of physical exercise, it has been great to watch as the effects the companionship, physical and creative activity has had on our supported work parties.

“They have become much fitter, stronger, much more confident in their approach to other people and even more resolute in dealing with the negative aspects of their lives.”

School receives free poetry book bags

Pupils win netball competition

ear 6 pupils from Yeo Moor Primary School won four matches and drew one in a Cluster High 5 netball competition across the area held at Clevedon School.

Now they will represent the town in the regional finals, and are ambitious to win matches in more competitions.

They even created a netball victory song as part of their celebrations.

just been rated Good with Outstanding Features, and are now rocketing towards being Outstanding in every area after three fantastic years of achievement.

It is part of the inspirational Clevedon Learning Trust, and Head Teacher Roland Lovatt said: “Well done to our fabulous students for such a brilliant performance in the netball competition. We are very proud of their achievement.”

ucky pupils at a Clevedon primary school have received a free book bag packed full of fantastic Poetry books.

Mary Elton Primary School was one of the first 1000 schools to enter the Primary League Primary Stars poetry competition, which led them to win the free book bags.

The Year 4 children received books from authors including Michael Rosen and Julia Donaldson, specially chosen by the National Literacy Trust in order to help nurture pupils’ love of poetry.

To enter the competition, the pupils had to write a poem around the theme of resilience, and the winning schools will be announced in February, with some further top prizes.

Head Teacher Dean Hudd said: “We have seen huge enthusiasm and great talent in entering this poetry competition. The standard of writing was exceptional.

Well done to all our pupils.”

Fantastic Freya raising hundreds for trip to help poverty stricken children in Africa

I

nspiring Clevedon School student Freya Hayles, 17, is about to cook up her second big breakfast to feed fellow students and raise hundreds to get to Africa later this year.

She has been inspired by teenager Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban for demanding education for girls.

Now Freya is embarking on a journey to rural Africa with Clevedon School this year working alongside charity Mend the Gap. Freya, who plans a career in law, hopes to be able to educate the students of local villages in English and Maths as well as build basic amenities for the whole village. Clevedon School plans to take numerous students on the trip.

Freya said: “I hope to help more children in Africa later this year.

nthusiastic children at a Clevedon primary school have raised a whopping £1700 for new books by baking cakes and reading.

Yeo Moor Primary School pupils baked hundreds of cakes for a ‘Book Bake Off ’ and read hundreds of books during a sponsored silence. The money will now go to buying thousands of new books for children to enjoy.

Yeo Moor Primary School have just been rated Good with Outstanding Features, and are now moving towards being Outstanding in every area after three fantastic years of achievement.

Head Teacher Roland Lovatt said: “The children have done absolutely amazingly. We are delighted at this figure and the pupils had great fun in raising the money.”

School students triumph in prestigious debating comp

O

utstanding students from Clevedon School are among Britain’s best public speakers after winning a prestigious South West region debating competition.

The eight students were one of two teams to win the South West debating forum against schools across the region at the European Youth Parliament at County Hall in Exeter.

The winning students were Hannah Filer, Grace Cherry, Jennifer Carter, Rory McGuigan, Lauren Sharp, Freya Hayles, Ella Gardiner and Jack Banks.

They impressed judges with

the arguments, teamwork and style as they debated in depth about a variety of issues that are currently the focus of the European Parliament.

Now the talented students will attend a three day public speaking and debating conference in June along with other regional winners across the UK. Head Teacher Jim Smith said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this success. Our students were fantastic and really were the standout team in the competition.

“We are so proud - they are a credit to themselves, their families and their school.”

Charity needs daffodil volunteers

arie Curie is appealing for people in North Somerset to ‘get behind the daffodil’, by volunteering to collect donations for the charity’s annual Great Daffodil Appeal this February and March.

The charity needs volunteers to encourage people in the local community to give a donation and wear a daffodil

pin.

The money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal will help Marie Curie Nurses provide care and support to people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones at home in North Somerset.

Festival takes a bow M

arlens is sad to announce that it is closing the curtain on its annual festival, held in September, which has been going since 2005.

Over the years, the festival has given the community an opportunity to enjoy a weekend of fun in, on and around the lake, and Marlens an opportunity to raise funds to restore the lake to its former glory.

Each year, it costs around £13,000 to run the festival, which takes months of planning and organisation by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Rising costs mean the festival does not raise sufficient funds to continue, never clearing more than £3,000 and failing to breakeven in 2017.

This year will focus on popular events which generate funds that Marlens can invest in new facilities at the lake.

A Marlens spokesman said: “We would like to thank all the volunteers, groups, entertainers, sponsors, donors and audiences who, over the past 13 years, made the festival such a great event for Clevedon and North Somerset. Keep a look out for our other events in 2018 as there’s more going on than ever this year.”

Marlens’ third Lake Day, which will take place on Saturday, March 24 will give

the community the chance to not only celebrate the 89th anniversary of the opening of Marine Lake but also kick off a season full of life and activity on the lake, with free have-a-go taster sessions for children in sailing, canoeing, paddle boarding, rowing and model boating.

Yatton History

The Mount - 57 High Street Yatton The Yatton Local History Society provides a regular article from their archives on some interesting history of the town. This month, David Bing, of the Society, looks at The Mount - 57 High Street Yatton.

T

he Mount was built in 1915 at a cost of £290 and was surrounded by a quarter acre of picturesque gardens and orchard. Today it would have been opposite Page’s Court.

The land was owned by a Mr Bishop and was originally a rubbish dump. G.H. Needham of “Henleigh” built the original house assisted my Christopher Parsons who in 1896 had been apprenticed to Needhams.

The property then comprised a kitchen, 2 living rooms and 3 bedrooms. It looked

older than it was at first glance having been built in a style pre-dating its construction. It had an interesting double bayed front surmounted by three windows on the first floor.

Megan Watkins (nee Parsons) was born in The Mount in 1920 and also died there.

When Christopher Parsons came out of the army in 1919 a larger workshop existed where Parsons and Watkins had established a painting and decorating business. This later became a building business owned and run by Megan Watkins’ family members.

In the 1920s Arthur Barter built an extension at a cost of £190. This added at the rear a roof of “cat slide” formation. It also had an interesting feature downstairs of two round windows on the east side of the house. In 1931 gas and sewerage were installed as until then a cesspit with a bucket and chain had been used.

Later on John Watkins, no relation to the above, became owner of the house from where he ran his veterinary practice. The old kitchen was used as the surgery which ran off the central hall.

In the early 1980s the house was found to be unsound. It was considered to be of no particular architectural value and

John Watkins drew up plans to demolish it and construct a new building himself. The building works were completed during 1987.

This consisted of a new veterinary surgery and two other shops, Fruit and Spice Delicatessen run by Paul Bain who relocated there from where Cork and Fork is today. West Town Bakery took the second shop. Office space was created on the first floor.

The Mount was not demolished until after the new building was completed.

The current houses on Chescombe Road including the dental practice were built after demolition in 1987. CJ Hole Estate Agents replaced the delicatessen and expanded into the vet’s front reception.

Later on Cheung’s Take Away replaced the bakery and Yatton Books and Prints took over the middle shop when the estate agents closed and the vets reopened their reception. This is now an estate agents again (Mark Templar).

Yatton Spring Show

Date set for village spring clean

T

here is sure to be a host of golden daffodils on show along with containers of other spring flowers and colourful arrangements at the annual Yatton Spring Show.

The annual show, which is organised by the Yatton Horticultural Society, takes place on Saturday, March 17 at the Yatton Village Hall, The Causeway, Yatton, from 2-4.30pm.

There will be lots of classes of daffodil varieties as well as other flower and potted plants classes.

If plants are not your thing, then you can try your hand at a cherry cake, a painting or a photograph. The organisers are also looking forward to children using their skills at art or cookery.

Schedules and entry forms are available at Yatton News (Clive’s) and Yatton Hardware and DIY Store, or a member of the committee.

Entry to the show is £1 for adults and accompanied children under the age of 16 can get in for free.

Twinning project with Pibrac in the South of France

atton Parish Council has been approached by Pibrac, a town in the south of France about starting a twinning with them.

In order for this to progress a Twinning Association would be needed and the Parish Council would like to hear from anyone who is interested in starting this project.

Library offering induction session for Extended Access membership

Popular railway evening in Yatton

T

he Strawberry Line Cafe at Yatton station is organising another of its popular railway evenings at Horsecastle Chapel, Horsecastle Farm Road, Yatton, on Tuesday, March 6.

This year will see the conclusion of seven years’ work to upgrade and transform the Western Region’s railway.

There will be new timetables and the widespread introduction of new and second hand passenger train fleets across the Western Region.

2018 also marks the start of Crossrail train operations and electrification of the Paddington-Bristol mainline.

Paul Stanford, the Route Delivery Director of Network Rail, who has led the team carrying out the works, will give an illustrated presentation, starting with the new station and track layout works at Reading in 2010, and giving the background to Western Region operations and the wider works to transform the region’s railway.

The evening will start at 7.30pm and will feature refreshments made by the cafe, where adults with learning disabilities receive training and work experience.

There will be a produce stall, raffle and good company, and all proceeds will go to Children’s Hospice South West.

What a year for Yatton Youth Club!

Y

atton Youth Club has been overwhelmed by the support they continue to receive from the local community, businesses, charities, groups, clubs and individuals.

The club managed to raise a whopping £35,000 in just over a year for much needed building and renovation work to the club’s base on Rock Road, Yatton.

The target was £50,000 and the local community has thrown its support behind the project.

Youth and Community Worker Niccy Hook said: “We can’t say thank you to everybody enough. Raising £35,000 in just over a year was something that, when we started, felt like a pipe dream but with Phase 1 now complete it is rapidly becoming a reality.

“The difference that the start of the renovation has made is far greater than we had anticipated.

“The young people have taken pride in the youth club, they have enjoyed coming up with ideas and leading the renovation discussions, the new look has attracted new members and we have an overflow of ideas of what we could do next, to the space, and in it.”

All those connected to the Youth Club hope that the next phase will include a new kitchen and toilet facilities.

ith the shops full of Easter eggs, it is a sure sign that Easter is almost upon us – but Easter isn’t just about chocolate eggs.

The Easter season in the UK includes the 40 days of lent and Holy week culminating in Easter Sunday, which this year is on Sunday, April 1. There are two public holidays celebrated in the UK - Good Friday and Easter Monday.

The long build up to Easter is called Lent, which lasts for 40 days (excluding Sundays). It is the time when Christians prepare for Easter and used to be a time for fasting or going without food as Jesus had done.

Nowadays many people give up a favourite thing they enjoy like sweets or cakes.

The day before Lent begins is called Shrove Tuesday.

Another name is Pancake Day. Long ago this was a day for feasting. People went to church to confess the bad things they had done and would be ‘shriven’ or forgiven before the start of Lent. As rich foods such as eggs were forbidden during Lent, one way of using them up was to make pancakes.

The custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates new life and there are many customs associated with Easter Day which involve eggs. For this reason Easter Day used to be known as Egg Sunday.

For the last two hundred years in Britain the custom of giving children chocolate eggs has been popular, but in many other countries children are given hard boiled eggs which they decorate by painting or dyeing them in bright colours.

Easter Exhibition and Sale of Art in 21st year

T

he annual Easter Weekend Charity Art Exhibition and Sale of Art will take place from Saturday, March 31-Monday, April 2 at The Hawthorns, Clevedon.

Last year’s 20th anniversary of the exhibition was once more extremely successful in the quality of entries, number of visitors and sales.

The organisers are again very fortunate to secure The Hawthorn’s excellent facilities for this coming Easter. This will be the 21st and last exhibition held at this time in aid of the two named

charities below.

Over the 20 years to date more than £17,500 has been raised and shared between Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Lions Club of Clevedon’s designated charities. Proceeds from this year’s exhibition will be similarly shared.

The exhibition will be open to the public on the Saturday and Sunday from 10am-1pm and 2.305pm, and then on the Monday from 10am-1pm and 2.30-4.30pm.

Teas/coffees and Easter biscuits will be available to purchase in The Hawthorns atrium.

Rockhampton Wind Quintet in Yatton

Chorale Concert in Yatton A Yatton and Winscombe Chorale Concert will take place on Saturday, March 17 at St Mary’s Church, Yatton.

The Chorale will sing music on the theme of ‘Creation’ and the programme includes the following well loved works: The Heavens Are Telling (Hadyn); How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings Fair (Brahms); All Things Bright And Beautiful (Rutter); Laudate Dominum (Mozart); And I Saw A New Heaven (Bainton).

The choir, now in its 25th year and formally The Winscombe Singers, is conducted by Ian Hubbard. Mark Hackeson will accompany on the organ and Joanne Manning (piano) will provide interludes, including music by Chopin.

The ‘a cappella’ groups ‘Pure Harmony’ and ‘Cantio’ will also sing works by Bruckner, Mendelssohn and Purcell.

The 75 minute concert starts at 7.30pm and admission is free, with a retiring collection. Visitors will also be able to socialise with the singers over drinks in the Chapter House afterwards.

Congresbury Singers March concert The programme for the Congresbury Singers March concert will comprise spirituals and work songs ‘from the deep south’ and it takes place on Saturday, March 17 in the Old School Rooms, Congresbury.

This will include many beautiful familiar songs, such as Shenandoah, Campdown Races, Michael Row the Boat and Go Tell it on the Mountain.

Free shopping trip to Cribbs Causeway Congresbury Community Transport is organising a free shopping trips every second Tuesday of the month on Bluey.

Amazing sculpture kicks off Art Club programme

C

levedon Art Club kicks off its annual programme of meetings with a presentation by sculptor Jason Lane on Tuesday, March 13, a real treat for fans of sculpture with a twist.

Jason is a collector of found materials, with a workshop stacked high with source material for his work. He collects reclaimed steel and is drawn to the aged qualities and personal histories of materials.

He makes static sculptures of animals ranging in size from small tabletop pieces up to the larger than life size Ox sculpture, which was commissioned for Persimmon Homes in Portishead.

Inspiration for his work is also in part derived from a fascination with mechanical objects and their animalistic qualities and he also makes mechanical sculptures, including the vehicular sound sculpture used in the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics.

Jason has a keen engineering mind and has recently enjoyed working

with Kevin McCloud designing and making a mechanical hammock for the second series of Kevin McCloud’s man-made home for Channel 4.

His work can also be seen at various public locations in and around Bristol, including the RWA and Bristol Zoo. The meeting takes place at the 6th Form centre, Clevedon School, at 7.30pm and entry for non-members is £3 on the door.

Two shows for Theatre shop in March

A

debut show and a real family affair come to The Theatre Shop, Queens Square, Clevedon this March.

New Bristol-based theatre company, Sugarscratch Theatre bring their debut show Said and Done to Clevedon on Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10.

Meet Millie...and Millie...and Millie. Tonguetied scientist and budding You-Tuber, Millie, accidentally invents a time machine taking her on a fast-paced and futuristic journey into the fickle world of internet celebrity. Discovering duplicate versions of herself, she questions who she is and who she will become.

Youth and experience combine for Town

A

mix of youth and experience is putting Clevedon Town on the right track, as the club continued its current good form.

At the time of writing the club have only suffered two defeats in the last 10 games and they were also still in the Somerset Premier Cup, with a quarter final tie at Wellington due to be played.

The emphasis is on young local payers such as striker Lucas Vowles, who has seven goals in the last 10 games, supported by experienced ex-Bristol City pros such as Alex Russell and Clayton Fortune.

The club currently sit ninth in the Premier Division of The Toolstation Western League, with 37 points from 26 games.

There are two home games in March, both against teams pushing for the title – versus Melksham Town on Saturday, March 17 and versus Willand Rovers on Saturday, March 24, and both kick off at 3pm at The Everyone Active Stadium on Davis Lane. Entry is £6 (£4 concessions) and under 16’s get in free.

Don’t thrown sticks for your dog Vet Emily Gover of Vale Vets Portishead answers your questions

Q:

I read recently that the British Veterinary Association is warning against throwing sticks for dogs. My dog loves to find sticks on walks and I happily throw them for him as he enjoys it so much, what is the harm?

We can all agree that it is wonderful to see a dog truly enjoying a walk and any owner would want to encourage such joyful abandon.

Many dogs love a game of fetch and will eagerly find sticks to start this game, but by throwing a stick, an owner could be opening the door to an unplanned visit to the vets for surgery.

We often see injuries from dogs chewing sticks and getting infected splinters in the mouth and tongue causing distress and frequently require anaesthetic to search for and remove the offending material.

The situation we desperately want to avoid is a dog running on to an upright stick or one that has ricocheted unexpectedly and cause major injury.

The RSPCA has documented that they see at least one case a week of traumatic injury due to sticks across the nation and that numerous referral veterinary hospitals are seeing at least 3 cases a month for stick injuries to the airways and oesophagus.

We would always encourage exercising your dog to keep them healthy, but suggest bringing dog safe toys, like balls or soft toys, with you instead of relying on sticks you may find on your walk.

Q: A:

Why has there been so much media discussion over flat-faced dogs recently?

The technical term for flat-faced dog breeds such as French Bulldogs and Pugs is ‘brachycephalic’- meaning ‘short head’ in Greek.

Many people love these dogs for their cute looks and personality, however the size and shape of their airways mean these breeds often struggle to breathe easily, and many of these dogs will end up needing surgery on their airways to help them to breathe and exercise normally. Flat-faced dogs are also at a higher risk of eye problems and skin fold infections.

These health issues can be very expensive to treat and stressful for both dog and owner.

The popularity of these breeds has soared in recent years – French Bulldog numbers have increased by 3000% over the last 10 years and in 2018 are predicted to overtake the Labrador as Britain’s most popular dog breed.

The British Veterinary Association has launched the #breedtobreathe campaign raise awareness of the problems these breeds face so that potential owners can be better informed when choosing their breed of dog.

s a White Van Man (WVM) it’s important to keep the team and myself looking our best, having a well-dressed team not only creates a great first impression but it also builds a sense of camaraderie which in turn keeps morale high on these cold wintery days.

Like most WVM I often get asked for

fashion advice and some of you might have been to one of my sell-out talks in Paris, Milan or Worle, however if you haven’t then I have two top tips, use stripes to enhance your shape and contrast to spotlight your best features.

As tradesmen, we wear high visibility jackets with reflective stripes, as well as

being a useful safety garment they are also perfect for staff that are vertically challenged and horizontally gifted as the vertical stripes give an impression of height which in turn makes someone look thinner.

Stripes are also useful if you want to draw attention to your best assets, for example, if you have a party coming up and would like to draw attention to your fantastic hips then ensure your stripes are running horizontally, keep the stripes narrow to be more effective.

Now be careful with using contrast in your fashion as it’s easy to get it wrong.

For example, the other day one of my chaps made the fatal mistake of turning up to work wearing tan coloured work boots which clashed horribly with his orange high visibility jacket. Belt buckles and necklaces are a great way to create contrast in a subtle yet effective way.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

I

f you’re in business and you haven’t yet heard of GDPR, the new EU directive on data protection, then keep reading... The legislation takes effect from the 25th May 2018 and before you all shout, “Ah! But we’re leaving the EU!” you should know that the UK Government will be enshrining the principles of GDPR within its own Data Protection Bill post-Brexit. In the meantime we are of course still in the EU. So what is it? The EU is looking to beef up protection for individuals regarding data privacy and data breaches. It requires organisations to adequately protect their client’s data and ensure that they can quickly respond to client’s request for details held or to their request to be ‘forgotten’.

In summary it requires that personal data should be: • processed lawfully, fairly and transparently and for a specified, explicit purpose • adequate, relevant and it’s use limited to what the specified purpose • accurate; every reasonable step must be taken to ensure that personal data that are inaccurate, having regard to the purposes

for which they are processed, are erased or rectified without delay • kept in a form which permits identification of data subjects for no longer than is necessary • processed in a manner that ensures appropriate security of the personal data, including protection against unauthorised or unlawful processing and against accidental loss, destruction or damage, using appropriate technical or organisational measures.

What do we mean by personal data?

GDPR defines this as being any information held on an individual that could be tied to that person (identified) byway of an ‘identifier’.

That identifier might be something as simple as a person’s name, address or national insurance number, but could include less obvious references such as online handles, IP addresses and so on.

The following action plan may be suitable for your organisation to ensure it complies with the new standards: • Read up on GDPR and take action now, do not wait until May! • Appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO) to organise your GDPR response

• Review and update existing security standards and processes • Understand how data is handled within your business, including how it is requested, collected, stored and processed • Review how you are seeking, obtaining and recording consent in line with GDPR • Identify your firm’s data processors and data controllers • Understand the supply chain of your software suppliers • Update the way your firm reacts to a data breach, including how it is reported internally and externally • New technology can support the process, and existing technologies may need to be updated in order to fall in line with GDPR – particularly if data is stored in the US • Raise awareness within your firm of what GDPR means for the business, what is changing and when. Staff should be properly trained on what they need to do.
