Kelly leaves her mark on Clevedon charity

A

lady from Weston has brightened the backdrop of a break area for a Clevedon charity – and won £500 for the privilege.

Kelly Anderson was selected as the winner of a competition to paint an uplifting mural on a green shipping container that lies at the rear of the 1in4 Friend Clevedon drop in centre at 67/69 Old Street, Clevedon.

The Clevedon unit of 1in4 People has provided the drop in facility, together with a host of therapies for vulnerable people with mental health issues in North Somerset for the last 19 years and the container forms the backdrop to the break-out area which clients use to take a breather from their counselling, treatments or therapies.

After overseeing renovation work to the exterior of the premises, staff and volunteers were left with the large, 20 foot long by eight foot high container and, rather than face a blank wall, they decided to hold a painting competition.

Entrants were asked to submit examples of their ideas and examples of what they would paint on the container.

Kelly submitted a watercolour picture of her beach scene, which is headed Friendship and Support and features three beach huts with the words ‘Courage,’ ‘Faith,’ and ‘Strength’ and her design was chosen.

Kelly explained: “I used to run an art therapy class so I knew the feeling of the place, and they are the words that to me best represent the charity.

“I had worked on a beach themed room at the Winter Gardens in Weston but this was certainly the biggest canvas I have ever worked on. I had some help from members so it was a team effort.”

She started the mural in the first week of July and it was finished at the end of September, and she received her £500 prize, which was donated by a local anonymous benefactor.

Elves on the

Run in Clevedon

T

he Damien Feely Foundation will be holding Clevedon’s annual Elves on the Run charity fun run and ride on Saturday, December 16 at The Crab Apple Pub, Clevedon.

Barney Feely has organised the event with a group of friends for the past ten years, raising thousands of pounds in his brother, Damien Feely’s, name.

Money raised will be going to St Peter’s Hospice in Bristol, which cared for Damien in 2007 when he lost his battle with cancer aged just 32, and some smaller Clevedon based charities.

The fun run, which welcomes bike riders too, takes place over a four mile route around Clevedon, starting at 10am from the Crab Apple then heading into town passed Tesco and then around by the Curzon, up Victoria Road, up to Six Ways, down Alexander

Road, out to the Pier then back to the Crab Apple via the sea front and Southern Way. Barney said: “As the event suggests, we want as many as possible running or riding dressed as an elf and we want to stress the family fun part of it. There will be a prize for the best dressed.”

In keeping with the history and heartbeat of the fund raising event, The Crab Apple will provide some entertainment during the day and evening, including Santa’s grotto, face painting, arts and crafts table sale, raffle, evening disco, and, from 2-3pm, Mr Florry.

All are welcome to take part in the race and entry is £12 for adults (16+), children under 16 free, and a team of six adults is £60.

Clevedon students get through to debating final

T

wo brilliant Clevedon School students have made it through to the final of a prestigious debating competition.

Rory McGuigan and Jack Banks debated to qualify for the final at Churchill Academy, after impressing judges and articulately arguing for the government for the motion of GM crops solving world hunger.

The judges included Dr Helen Harper from the Plant Science Faculty at the University of Bristol.

Jo Carrington, Subject Coordinator for English at Clevedon School, said: “We are so proud of our students - this was a fantastic achievement. I am looking forward to the final in January and what they can achieve.”

Light up the Lake

M

arlens and The Pier will host a thank you event to shine a light on the invaluable support the Heritage Lottery Fund has given to developing and improving two of Clevedon’s historic seafront attractions on Saturday, December 9.

Thanks to people buying lottery tickets, The National Lottery has raised £36 billion for Good Causes since it began in 1994 and more than 500,000 individual grants have been made across the UK – including to Clevedon Marine Lake and Clevedon Pier.

December’s event invites people to join in a celebration that promises to light up the promenade from The Pier to Marine Lake.

The finale will see the lake alight with boats, lanterns and a few swimmers brave enough to take the plunge. At sunset the lights go on to the colourful and energetic beat of samba.

Visitors can enjoy free entry on to The Pier between 2-4pm, on production of a lottery

receipt, and at 4pm a lantern procession lead

by North Somerset Samba will parade along the seafront to Marine Lake, where there will be a range of illuminating activities on the lake from 5-7pm.

These will include Model Boat Club’s annual Night Sail at 6pm, Clevedon Sailing Club cadets lighted flotilla and a Night Swim. Hot refreshments will be on sale throughout.

Marlens, the charity behind the restoration, management and further improvement of Clevedon Marine Lake, will be encouraging visitors to give generously to their bucket collection at the lake, to help fund the installation of permanent donation boxes, lakeside concrete benches and ceramic murals.

ig-hearted Clevedon School students have all ‘Braved the Shave’ to raise money for cancer research.

Sam Barcham, Taylor Stephens, Jack Valentine and Tom Haddon had their heads shaved by Adam’s Barbershop on Saturday at Clevedon Rugby Club.

The inspirational students all had their own very personal reasons for wanting to raise awareness of cancer.

And they surpassed their original target of £1000 and are currently the proud recipients of a handsome £2,148 – and money from cakes sales and competitions is pushing the figure higher by the day. It could rise to £3000.

Head of School Jim Smith said: “I am so

proud of the boys. They displayed so many of the values of the school that we hold dear, notably leadership, highly developed organisational and collaborative skills and a high degree of sensitivity and empathy.”

Clevedon School has a reputation for supporting students’ charity fund raising events.

Earlier this month, the school’s Amnesty International Youth Group spent 24 hours on Clevedon Pier raising much needed funds for Amnesty International, the Firefighters Charity, the Ripple Pond and JDRF. Rotary Club brings added colour to village – and supports polio campaign

M Primary school sow poppy seeds for WWI

P

upils at a Clevedon primary school sowed poppy seeds with a local visiting councillor to commemorate the ending of World War 1.

Yeo Moor Primary School pupils planted the seeds with local councillor Linda Little, and the school also turned the activity into a learning experience about history.

Head Teacher Roland Lovatt said: “It was an excellent learning opportunity for our pupils

to meet the local councillor and to remember the end of World War 1 with the planting of poppy seeds.”

The high-achieving school has won awards and accolades because of its innovative curriculum and ability to inspire high achievement and wellbeing of children of all backgrounds and abilities.

embers of the Clevedon Yeo Rotary Club have been busy planting 5,000 purple crocus bulbs at several locations in Clevedon including the ring road roundabout by Tesco and at Six Ways.

The club is taking part in the Rotary Club’s Purple4Polio crocus planting, which raises awareness for the End Polio Worldwide campaign.

The Purple4Polio crocus corm planting 2016 was a huge success, with nearly seven million purple corms being planted across Great Britain and Ireland resulting in a carpet of purple in communities during spring 2017. This year, they are aiming to go even further and plant 10 million purple crocus corms.

The purple crocus is a symbol of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child to indicate they have received their life saving oral polio vaccine.

Lest we forget

levedon residents came out in force on Remembrance Sunday to honour those who lost their lives fighting for their country.

War veterans and members of the Royal British Legion and the armed forces were joined by representatives from various local organisations, including guides, brownies, cubs and scouts, and members of the public showing their respect.

The Clevedon Branch of The Royal British Legion held a short Remembrance Service on the Saturday in Queens Square, Clevedon, and then their annual Remembrance Parade on the Sunday.

The parade started at the Salthouse Field, Clevedon, and marched to a church service at St Andrew’s Church in Old Church Road.

The march was led by a contingent of The City of Bristol Pipes and Drums.

Quiz raises fine amount for Foodbank

A

charity quiz organised by Clevedon Yeo Rotary club at the Friary in Clevedon saw proceeds added to a matching grant from Rotary HQ and enabled the club to give a cheque of around £1,500 to Clevedon foodbank.

It has been a hectic few weeks for the club, who have been working hard for the Clevedon community.

To boost the clubs charity coffers even further on the run up to Christmas, the club will be selling raffle tickets at various events around the town for the chance to win a Bumper Christmas Hamper.

Residents unite

to show their support for Old Mill Road

P

ortishead residents came out in force to voice their anger at plans to redevelop Old Mill Road.

An estimated 1,000 people took part in a Save Old Mill Road march to demonstrate the strength of feeling in the town against plans

by Standard Life Investments to build 350 flats, a cinema, gym, shops, bars, restaurants and cafés on the industrial area.

Organised by the leaseholders of Old Mill Road, it was the second march to show solidarity with Old Mill Road businesses, who face being turfed out when their leases end in 2019, and coincided with Standard Life Investments showcasing its plan to transform the area.

The large crowd, armed with banners, placards and signs, left the Folk Hall before marching through the High Street to the Library, where Standard Life had a presentation.

A number of councillors also took part in the march, and have also been involved with meetings between Old Mill Road businesses and Standard Life.

Old Mill Road is one of Portishead’s oldest remaining commercial areas and provides employment for 357 local people across 20 businesses.

Patrick Gardner, owner of T&G Woodware, who have been in Old

Mill Road for 40 years, said the turnout should send out a very strong message.

He said: “It was a very successful turnout and we had more than double from the previous march. The people are on our side and the overwhelming majority of people in the town don’t want it.

“No one will invest in running a cinema when Cribbs Causeway is only 12 minutes away. Three hundred and fifty more houses will mean even more cars on the road, causing even more congestion and huge disruption, while new businesses will damage the High Street. It will also mean that Portishead will be losing skilled staff that will not be replaced.”

What quickly became apparent to campaigners after they started was the support of local residents, and Fiona Gissing of T&G Woodware commented: “What has been really overwhelming is that I have felt that not only are we fighting for our own jobs and businesses but also for Will Writers and LPA Specialists Portishead residents too.”

Patrick added: “Whatever we will have to do we will carry on doing it.”

embers of the 4th Portishead Rainbows had the chance to learn everything about Fair Trade at Sainsbury’s Portishead.

The store held a Fair Trade evening and 28 members of the Rainbows discovered what Fair Trade products are available, a little history about how it started and then they had a chance to taste some Fair Trade chocolate, and milkshakes.

They also went on the Fair Trade trail to find which aisles the products were located in.

he date has been announced for the next Portishead Rotary Club’s annual Swimathon, and it will take place on Saturday, March 17 – St Patrick’s Day. The event, which is now in its 22nd year, will once again take place at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, Portishead and start at 10.30am.

Last year saw 90 teams take part. Each team of up to six swimmers swim for 35 minutes. It is open to people of all ages and abilities and there is no competitive side. Participants get involved to have fun, raise money for charity and see if they can beat their own personal best.

Festive December Concert for Choral Society

ortishead Choral Society hosts a Festive December Concert in Gordano School Hall on Saturday, December 9 – and there will be plenty of audience participation involved alongside what is set to be a great performance from the choir.

The concert will take the form of two-three parts and will feature excerpts from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Borodin’s Prince Igor and Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Conductor Jonathan Palmer has once again done some special arrangements of popular Christmas Carols for the choir to sing which will include parts for the audience to sing-a-long to, something which has proved hugely popular in the past.

ike Roberts, Chairman of the RNLI in Portishead, has been asked by the Trustee Board at the RNLI Headquarters in Poole, to join them on their Technical Committee.

Mike joined the volunteers in Portishead five years ago where he willingly picked up a sponge and joined the Shore Crew at the old Lifeboat Station where they were operating as The Portishead Lifeboat Trust, based at Sugar Loaf Beach.

Since then he became Chairman four years ago, taking over the mantel from the late John Gittings.

Mike helped and supported the process of the adoption of the Trust into the RNLI in 2015 where he became the first RNLI Chairman in Portishead.

And he is very much one of the central and key members at the Lifeboat Station and keeps his presence felt with all of the volunteers, not just the Crew but also the fundraising, education and shop volunteers who all work very closely together to make sure the lifesaving service continues.

His wealth of experience gives him a first-hand view of what it is like on the ‘front line’.

This new volunteer role is in addition to the one based at Portishead and he will visit Poole regularly to help advise and assist the Trustees

What happens to your social media & digital assets when you die?

Taking photos on a phone and uploading them to social media - these are your digital assets which are part of everyday life. But do you ever actually own them and what happens to them when you die? Cherry Stuckey explains.

What is a digital asset?

A digital asset is anything that you own or have rights to that exists online or on hard storage devices such as your computer or mobile phone.

This includes your online banking accounts, social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, online shopping accounts, media stores and online gaming accounts.

Not all digital assets have a monetary value. Whilst online bank accounts, bitcoins or your Paypal account can be passed to beneficiaries, your pictures, posts or information on social media may be just as important to you though they have no monetary value.

Do I actually ‘own’ the content on my apps?

Digital assets are not automatically owned. Often we have a licence to use the asset which terminates on death and cannot be passed on to a beneficiary. Music held in an iTunes account for instance is enjoyed on a licence basis only and therefore could not be passed on. The same could be true of your photos uploaded to Instagram or Facebook.

Surely I can just give a family member access to my accounts?

This depends on the terms and conditions of the provider. Often the executor does not have the legal right to access the particular account using the deceased’s password and log in details as they are personal to the deceased and are not permitted to be disclosed for confidentiality reasons.

What if I don’t want anyone to see my private emails?

Whether your private emails actually remain private will all depend on the terms and conditions of the service provider. Gmail and Hotmail will release emails in certain circumstances, whilst Yahoo will not release emails on any basis. If privacy after your death is important to you, you will need to pick your email provider accordingly.

So what should I do?

Though your assets may be digital in form, they are still assets and as such it is important to leave clear instructions to your executors about what should happen to them when you die. It is wise to keep a regularly updated inventory of your online assets - logins, passwords and social media accounts,

which should be stored with your Will.

Check the terms and conditions of the service provider to see whether you actually own the asset. You alone may only have rights to your digital content and so your executors may have problems accessing your online content. Photos or other documents that have been stored in the cloud are subject to the specific terms of the provider. Often when the holder ceases to pay the subscription fees the account is deleted along with all of your saved files. You should therefore back up your digital assets on an external hard drive or provide a family member with the ability to access the account.

It helps if at least one of your executors are tech savvy as they will need to negotiate the digital world.

Unfortunately the law is yet to keep up with our changing online community and until such time we all need to take steps to protect our digital assets - as we would our physical assets.

BC’s Jemma Cooper will be turning on the Portishead Christmas Lights with Father Christmas on Monday, November 27 at 6.10pm in the High Street Precinct.

The Portishead Christmas Lights are put up by around one hundred volunteers to make the High Street area look fantastic over the festive season and the display is known as one of the finest in the region.

Every year the town’s display gets bigger and better and this year the lights will extend up to the West Hill area of the town.

Although the Christmas Lights receives an absolutely vital grant from Portishead Town Council, the majority of the £20,000 annual costs are met from local fundraising, and many local groups have chosen to raise

money in various ways for the Lights.

The Tree of Light will take centre stage in the Precinct and if you would like to share a memory of a loved one this Christmas you can fill out a form with the name and photo of the person to be remembered. Their details will then be displayed onscreen in the window of Freemans up to Christmas.

Father Christmas will also be there to greet the crowd. If you have any letters to pass on to Santa there will be a special post box at Goodman & Lilley just opposite the switchon platform where you can post your letters.

Santa will reply to every letter received so please remember to include your child’s full name and postal address on their letter.

Victorian Christmas Fayre

ortishead’s Victorian Christmas Fayre is one of the main fundraising activities for the town’s Christmas Lights and all members of the community are invited to enjoy the event, preferably in Victorian costume.

On Friday, December 15 Portishead High Street will be closed to traffic between 6-9pm as the town turns back the clocks to Victorian times and visitors can soak up the festive atmosphere.

There will be plenty of festive fun for everyone, including Santa’s Grotto, music, sideshows and street entertainers.

The smell of roasting chestnuts and mulled wine will fill the air and there will be a variety of stalls and shops staying open later so you can grab some lovely gifts for the big day.

With the Fayre getting bigger and better this year, organisers have had to put some stalls in The Precinct for the first time, as they have run out of room in the High Street.

ortishead Kitchens will be displaying the new work of Christine Leigh and Annie O’Connor from Monday, December 4 at the studio in the Harbour Road showroom in Portishead and everyone is welcome.

It is the second art evening with local artist Christine Leigh, who permanently exhibits at the studio, and she will be joined by Clifton artist Annie for the event.

Christine paints beautiful local scenes in watercolours and Annie’s incredible work is described as mixed media paper collage. Each piece is worked on over many months and she has won the Charles Stanley award for her work Shedding No 2 In Unison, in 2015 Ten percent of all sales will continue to be given to Portishead in Bloom to help the volunteers with the work they undertake in the town to keep it looking beautiful.

Anna, of Portishead Kitchens, said: “It is a real privilege to work with these artists and by hosting these events it means that their work can be seen by many more people.

Both ladies are extremely talented and this evening is sure to be another success. Our last evening was very well attended and many beautiful paintings were sold.

What’s On Drop In Tea invite to all The Marina W.I. in Portishead is inviting people to drop in and meet W.I. members at Clarence House, High Street, Portishead, on Wednesday, December 20.

Visitors can have a cup of tea and taste some delicious homemade cakes from 2-4pm. Everyone is welcome and visitors can bring a friend too.

Members are mothers, daughters, grandmothers and sisters who get together at least once a month for many different activities.

What’s On Pantomime season Fresh from the success of their first production of the season, “Dark Lucy”, which thrilled audiences in October, Portishead Players are back in rehearsal for their festive offering in true pantomime style.

Scripted by award-winning pantomime writer Alan P Frayn their version of the well-known magical fairytale Beauty and the Beast is traditional, up-to-date and packed with comedy.

With a cast of 48 adults and children, directors Janet Astley and Karley Hughes are stage-managing dancing cutlery, a wicked fairy and an outrageous Pantomime Dame to ensure the quick-fire fun delights all ages.

Also put through their paces are the costume, make-up and design teams creating masterpieces from ball gowns to beastly effects.

The show will run from Thursday, December 7-Saturday, December 9 at the Somerset

Hall, High Street, Portishead at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee performance at 2pm.

Christmas at the Lighthouse Café The Lighthouse Café at St. Nicholas Church, Nore Road, Nailsea, will be holding its special annual Christmas event on Thursday, December 14 There will be live music provided by one of the most accomplished pianists in the town and special seasonal cakes will be available.

The café will be open from 2-4pm as usual and for the last half hour Christmas carols will be sung.

This will be the last opening of the Café during 2017 but the doors will again be open on Thursday, January 4.

Marathon fundraising goal for Mike

P

hilosophy and Ethics Teacher at Gordano School, Michael Oxenham, has launched himself into a mammoth training regime in order to prepare for a place in the London 2018 Marathon on April 22.

Mike is running to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation, a UK based charity that supports good mental health for all. The goal of the charity is to search for the causes and reasons for poor mental health issues, and to support those who have mental health problems.

Mike commented on his fundraising page: “The Mental Health Foundation …are keen to find and address the sources of mental health problems and I am a firm believer in the old sentiment that prevention is always better than a cure - it is better to be proactive, rather than reactive.”

Running 26.2 miles is certainly an active way to raise awareness of the charity. Mike is

hoping to raise upwards of £2000 over the next few months, and is already training hard for the event.

Staff and students at Gordano School are keen to support the teacher as he moves towards his fundraising goal. He has already raised £900 and is keen to see how much money he can generate for the charity.

Acting Headteacher, Tom Inman, said: “Mike is an excellent role model for students at Gordano School. I was delighted to hear that he had a place at next year’s London Marathon, and that he is able to support his chosen charity in this way. ” If you would like to support Mike by making a donation, you can find details of his fundraising page online. Gordano School will be tweeting out updates on Mike’s training regime, and are looking forward to seeing the teacher as he crosses the finish line in April.

The pain will tend to be aggravated by lifting, gripping and rotating your hand. It can affect men and women equally with peak occurrence at 40-50 years of age.

Clevedon to sparkle this Christmas

The big switch on of the Clevedon Christmas Lights takes place on Saturday, November 25 in Queens Square, Clevedon – a true sign that the festive season is upon us.

The event, which always draws a great crowd, will take place from 1.30-6pm and the Christmas Lights are scheduled to be switched on around 4.30pm.

There will be plenty of festive fun and lots of stalls, plus a fair too so there is something for all.

The annual Tree of Light in the Baptist Church foyer will also be on. Organised by The Lions Club of Clevedon, a star bearing the name of a loved one and a personal message, can be placed on the tree in remembrance for a minimum donation of £5.

Clevedon Lions Christmas Float S anta will be visiting Clevedon in December escorted by the members of the local Lions club. From Monday, December 4, Father Christmas will again be helping Clevedon Lions Club as their illuminated Christmas Carol Float tours the town in the run-up to Christmas.

Lions Club members will be collecting to support local charities. The funds collected, both on the float and at Clevedon supermarkets during December, will be used to support local clubs and associations via the popular Lions Annual DREAM SCHEME award fund.

Adventure to Santa this Christmas – in Clevedon!

Y oungsters will have the chance to see Santa in Clevedon on Saturday, December 2 at Clevedon Pride’s annual Christmas event with Children’s Adventure to Santa in Queens Square.

Queen square will be bedecked with Christmas lights and gazebos will be Christmas themed lands, including Reindeer Ranch,

Present Place, Snowy Square and Tinsel Town.

Each land will hold a task or activity and once completed, the child will receive a stamp in their passport to see Santa in his special grotto at the Theatre shop. And of course – every child receives a gift.

Other attractions on the day include a host of stalls selling everything from handicrafts and

bric-a-brac to greeting cards and stocking fillers. There will also be an opportunity to win champagne and other goodies on the tombola and bottle stalls.

Besides the Father Christmas trail there will be lots for children to do with an array of entertainment including a bouncy castle, fairground rides and donkey/reindeer rides.

They are welcome to join ‘the club,’ as it’s affectionately known by members, and to attend the monthly meetings, workshops, therapy days and various social events which take place in the area during the year.

The meetings, which are informal coffee mornings often with a speaker or some form of entertainment, take place at St Francis Church Hall, Ash Hays Road, Nailsea, on the second Saturday of each month from 10.30am-12.15pm.

It’s Christmas!

B

y the time this magazine hits your doormat, the songs will be playing, the lights will be twinkling and no doubt everyone you meet will be overflowing with Christmas cheer.

If you can though, do spare a thought for your poor accountant over the Christmas season, for whom winter and the January tax return deadline can only spell long nights at the office where, chained to their desks, they will feverishly, sometimes futilely, attempt to dig their way out of the snowdrift like pile of work that the heavens have seen fit to suddenly dump on them…

I know, tear jerking stuff. Interestingly, chocolates and fine wine have been known to significantly ease their distress. Just a thought.

Talking of wine, no doubt on many an employer’s to do list at the moment is the Christmas party. So I thought I’d pen a quick reminder for the business owners amongst you as to who can you invite and what can you spend.

You can in fact invite whoever you like and

spend whatever you like, but if you want tax relief on that expenditure you will need to abide by a few rules.

All employees are covered by the £150 per head (inclusive of vat) annual tax exemption and the definition of employee is extended helpfully to include retired members of staff and the partners of existing and past employees.

Importantly though, if you happen to spend more than this then unfortunately the entire costs are disallowable for tax relief, not just the amount by which you ran over. So try not to get too carried away when they call last orders.

The costs of entertaining clients and their partners will not however be allowable for tax relief and your claim for tax relief will need to be apportioned accordingly.

Note also that all costs must be included in the calculation; taxis to and from the event, the cost of overnight accommodation etc.

If you do run over the exemption limit then unfortunately the ‘benefit’ will need to be

calculated and reported on each employee’s P11d, or the tax settled on their behalf by the employer by way of a PAYE settlement agreement.

Happily you can claim the VAT back on staff entertaining costs as it’s seen by HMRC as staff welfare, not entertainment, but unlike the tax exemption the VAT treatment does not extend to partners of employees or past employees.

Be careful too if the only or main attendees are directors, as HMRC will look to block your VAT claim entirely or see it apportioned appropriately.

Be careful also with gifts of cash or vouchers to employees at Christmas, these are always taxable on the employee and cannot be covered by the tax free exemption.

Seasonal presents such as a box of chocolates, a turkey or a bottle of wine are fine though, so long as the value is not excessive (less than £50 per head).

New temporary route to Weston General Hospital’s A&E Department as redesign project underway

V

isitors to Weston General Hospital’s A&E Department will temporarily have to take a few extra steps through the main hospital to reach their destination.

The reason for this is a redesign project, which

began in October, which will improve primary care streaming in the department.

Primary care streaming, an NHS England national programme, allows patients who don’t necessarily need to be treated by an Emergency Doctor access to a greater range of health professionals for their needs – including advance and emergency nurse practitioners.

Phil Walmsley, Director of Operations at Weston Area Health NHS Trust, explained, “The redesigned A&E will greatly improve services and make the department more efficient. The project will take six weeks. During this time, visitors will need to enter via the main hospital, following the clearly marked signs and arrows to A&E.” “We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but ultimately our patients will greatly benefit

from the redesign,” Phil continued.

The redesign is being completed using £842,600 in funds awarded to Weston General Hospital

by NHS England as part of a national initiative where hospitals across the country were able to bid for a grant to create primary care streaming in A&E. Phil added: “This investment will help ensure that all our patients – those with serious life threatening emergencies and with more minor conditions – are directed to the most appropriate care for their needs as quickly as possible.”

Miscellany concert for Music Club

levedon Music Club’s autumn season ends on Tuesday, December 12 with a concert by Miscellany, the Clevedon-based vocal ensemble, accompanied this time by celebrity pianist Richard Lennox.

They will present a programme of choral, solo and instrumental pieces on the theme ‘In the Ending of the Year’ starting at 7.30pm in the Teignmouth Room at Clevedon Community Centre, princes Road, Clevedon. Seasonal refreshments will be served in the interval and everyone is welcome.

Winter tips for your car This month, Thomas James from Tickenham Garage provides some useful tips for car owners this winter.

H

ere at Tickenham Garage we see a rise in the number of breakdowns during the winter months. Road conditions can be more challenging and snow and ice can be hazardous to drivers.

During the colder months, it’s important to ensure that you and your car are prepared.

Batteries are more likely to be faulty during colder weather, check out last month’s magazine for information about keeping your battery performance at its best.

It is important to ensure that your tyres have a reasonable tread during the winter months.

We recommend a minimum of 3mm tread to help with the grip on the road. You can change your tyres to winter tyres which are made from an alternative rubber that gives better grip with the change in weather and

conditions on the road.

Antifreeze can save your engine from breaking down on those cold mornings.

It protects the engine and often will stay working as low as -30 degrees; we don’t get that in England so you will be fine!

Ensure your visibility is clear, make sure your windscreen is clear inside and out and keep any snow / dirt away from the windscreen to maintain visibility.

If you have snow on your roof, be sure to remove it so it doesn’t fall onto your windscreen. Wiper blades should be in good condition to ensure that your screen is kept clean and clear.

Q:

I have a hungry spaniel who can scavenge anything which is a worry with Christmas coming up. What are the signs that my dog has ingested chocolate?

A:

Chocolate contains theobromine that can cause death in dogs and other animals. Initially, the dog will develop abdominal pain and vomiting which may contain blood.

The vomit in most cases will contain substantial amounts of chocolate, giving it a very characteristic smell. The dog may be restless, drooling saliva and could have difficulty standing or walking.

Increased thirst is also common. In more severely affected dogs, there is an increased rate of breathing, muscle tremors, or rigidity.

Eventually, the dog may develop convulsions and die.

In the majority of cases, the symptoms occur within a few hours, but it has been known to be delayed for as long as 24 hours.

If you discover your dog has eaten chocolate, contact your vet immediately, whatever the quantity, do not wait for symptoms to begin.

If you can get your dog to the vet within an hour of eating the chocolate, there’s a good chance that they can be saved.

Drugs can be given to induce vomiting, emptying the stomach before the chocolate toxins have had time to be absorbed into the

Ollie was found by Portishead Pets at Home staff in October in a bad way, unable to walk properly and with flystrike as a result of getting dirty.

He had in fact appeared on local social media earlier that week thought to have been hit by a car but he then disappeared.

He was brought into Vale Vets Animal Hospital where an x-ray revealed that her mobility problems were in fact the result of being shot by an air gun pellet. The bullet was stopped by the spine and caused an injury resulting in lameness and incontinence.

Vale Vets posted a picture of Ollie on their Facebook page hoping to track down the owners and it was shared by more than 400 people and seen by more than 30,000.

He has since had surgery to remove the pellet from her back. Vale Vets staff did some detective work using the out of date microchip details and were delighted when they tracked down his owners who had actually lost Ollie 10 months ago. He has now been discharged and is at home on the road to recovery.
