Tracey Fowler I can’t believe a whole year has gone by since I left my job as a reporter for the North Somerset Times to take up the post of managing editor at Gordano Living.

It’s been an eventful year as Portishead remains as busy as ever with community events and activities, and it’s been quite a challenge to ensure we cover as many of these events as we possibly can.

I would like to thank the Portishead Townswomen’s Guild for inviting me to be their guest speaker in September. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and received some really good feedback.

Huge congratulations once again to Portishead in Bloom. Members returned triumphant from the South West in Bloom award ceremony in Dartmouth, more details of which can be found in our community news section.

Despite the reluctance of many to accept it, the festive season is fast approaching and it is with great pleasure that in this issue we bring you the latest news on the Portishead Christmas Lights and information about the town’s Victorian evening. In addition we have plenty of shopping ideas for Christmas and lots of suggestions for parties and social gatherings. Our festive features will continue in the December issue.

There are plenty of firework events coming up to mark November 5, details of which can be found on our What’s On pages. Please remember the firework code, keep fireworks out of reach of children and read the instructions carefully. Keep pets indoors too. Stay safe and enjoy!

WI Celebrates 100 years P

ortishead’s Harbourside WI joined forces with Portishead WI to celebrate the institute’s centenary in the town’s Jubilee Park, Portishead.

Members turned the clocks back, dressing in the style of 1915 and parading in their finery along the marina before arriving at Jubilee Park in time to join in the planting of a tulip tree and the installation of a commemorative plaque.

restaurant vouchers to Jenny Allen of Portishead WI after judging her winner of the best homemade hat.

Several ladies had baked cakes to a specific WI recipe and so picnic blankets were spread on the ground and the cakes enjoyed before a number of different games were played.

Portishead Calendar now on sale T

he new Portishead calendar has gone on sale in the town’s High Street.

The calendar has been put together by husband and wife team Matt and Rosemary Westley who run stationers Morgan Westley. The photographs, all taken by Matt, feature an area of the town and include the Christmas lights, Sugar Loaf beach and the raft race.

Some of the profits from each calendar sold, as in previous years, will be donated to Portishead in Bloom and Portishead Christmas Lights. Last year more than £150 was split between the two good causes.

The calendars cost £5 each and come in three different formats

A spokeswoman for the groups said: “It was a very successful afternoon.”

Portishead RNLI’s new lifeboat

ortishead RNLI’s new Atlantic 85 class lifeboat, My Lady Anne, has officially gone on service, completing the latest chapter in the station’s history.

Paul Eastment, RNLI divisional operations manager, said: “I’m proud to say that My Lady Anne is now Portishead RNLI’s official lifeboat.

The station has come a long way in a very short space of time and that’s testament to the

volunteers and their positive and proactive attitude during a time of considerable change.”

The relief Atlantic 75 lifeboat Spirit of Clovelly, which had been on station since April, will now return to Poole.

The Atlantic 85 class lifeboat carries four crew members, is powered by two 115hp engines and has a stronger hull and greater top speed.

On board is a full suite of communication and electronic navigation aids, and the added radar allows the crew to operate more effectively in poor visibility.

A generous donation from Bill Wraith has helped to fund the lifeboat, which has been named My Lady Anne in memory of his late wife. Mr Wraith said: “The lifeboat is a fitting tribute to both my late wife Anne and to the people who will crew her. I am proud to be associated with the RNLI and this lifeboat is a true demonstration that out of sadness comes a wonderful lasting memory of Anne’s life.”

Portishead RNLI is now working hard to fundraise for the running costs of its new lifeboat and lifeboat station. Volunteers are being sought to join the fundraising team and get involved in organising events.

It costs approximately £85,000 to run an inshore lifeboat station each year, £1,527 to train a crew member and an additional £1,678 to cover their kit. Anyone interested in helping can email portishead@rnli.org.uk or to find out more visit www.portishead-lifeboat.org.uk

Another Gold for Portishead in Bloom!

F

or the eighth year running Portishead has received a gold award in the South West in Bloom competition.

Volunteers returned triumphant from the award ceremony in Dartmouth, carrying the gold flag, along with the St Bridget Cup, a new trophy for Art in Landscape and 13 ‘In Your Neighbourhood’ awards.

Longstanding Portishead in Bloom chairman Sandy Tebbutt said: “We are all extremely pleased to know the hard work carried out by Portishead in Bloom has been recognised and rewarded.”

Judges were given a guided tour of the town in July and were impressed with the town, commenting on the wall in the town garden which had previously been an eyesore. The wall was painted by Portishead youngsters with the help of staff from Tinca Gallery in the High Street, amongst other things.

Sandy added: “We couldn’t have done it without the support of everyone who gets involved from the councils to friends, it’s a real group effort and I would like to thank all those who contribute.”

Residents in the town have been nominating their favourite gardens and balconies

throughout the year for the Portishead in Bloom Garden Awards. Winners will be announced at the celebration evening, when the John Daws Cup, this year sponsored by Gordano Living, will also be awarded.

Each year Portishead in Bloom awards the John Daws Cup to a member of the community who has made an outstanding contribution to the town, along with £100.

tep back in time to the 1940s at Heaven on the Hill café in Portishead.

Between noon and 2pm every Wednesday you can soak up the 1940s atmosphere with tunes from the decade playing while you enjoy afternoon tea at the Avon Way cafe.

Owners Sam and Vicki, who love baking and have been friends for 30 years, say the afternoon teas are proving very popular.

Sam said: “We dress the part to create the atmosphere and our customers seem to love it.”

Vicki added: “It’s something a bit different and a great excuse to enjoy a cream tea!”

A

record number of sixth form students from Gordano School have been accepted onto the Access to Bristol University scheme this autumn. In all, an incredible 30 students have been offered places - a fantastic result for the students, and for their sixth form teachers and tutors.

Over 1500 applicants from around the Bristol area competed for the 400 places up for grabs.

Access to Bristol is a programme of eight afternoon sessions designed to give sixth formers a taste of life as a student at the University of Bristol.

The University of Bristol invites students to apply, detailing the subject that they would like to study at university, and why.

Jeanne Fairs, head of sixth form, said: “We are delighted that we can motivate so many of our sixth formers onto this scheme. We hope to see lots more potential sixth formers attending our open evening on Thursday November 12 where they can learn about all the courses, facilities and extra support that Gordano School has to offer.”

Salon doubles its fundraising target L

ocal hair and beauty salon Robert John has celebrated over 45 years in business by raising more than £10,000 for charity.

Robert John hair and beauty salons in Portishead and Clevedon are celebrating after more than doubling their charity fundraising target.

Salon owners Bob and Jenny Hancock decided to celebrate more than 45 years in businesses by launching a fundraising campaign with the aim of raising £5,000 for Children’s Hospice South West’s (CHSW) Charlton Farm in Wraxall.

A string of fundraising activities, ranging from cake sales to a sky dive, concluded with a big charity party night at Hall and Woodhouse. The

event, which included demonstrations, raffles and an auction, raised thousands of pounds taking the total raised by the salons to around £11,000 and the fundraising has continued; one member of staff who recently got married made a donation to the cause in place of having wedding favours at her reception and another member of the team is still waiting to carry out her skydive. Robert John has also teamed up with Clifton’s Estate Agents to hold a silent auction whereby Clifton’s will provide the highest bidder with a voucher offering to sell a property free of charge.

embers of the Portishead Christmas Lights committee have paid tribute to one of their volunteers who is recovering from a serious illness.

Dave Skelhorne, who was named in the Queen’s birthday honours in 2012 when he was awarded the British Empire Medal, has dedicated a great deal of time and effort to the lights over the years. He has played a major part in making the lights the fantastic display they are today and has led many teams of volunteers, not only in the stages of planning through to putting the lights up, but also in organising the connected events like ‘switch on’ and Victorian Evening’ . Dave also headed the team of carnival marshals for many years.

At a recent lights committee meeting chairman Stuart Hamer recognised the dedication and hard work Dave had put in and said:”While Dave is recovering he may not be with us on the ground but he will certainly be with us in spirit. His commitment to the Portishead Christmas Lights must be commended. We are all missing him this year and wish him well.”

Lights Switch On

ortishead Christmas lights will be shining for longer this year.

Organisers have decided to brighten the day for those heading off to work on dark December mornings by setting the timers to allow the lights, which go off at midnight, to come back on for an hour or so in the early mornings.

This year the illuminations will be extended to include strings of lights in the big trees where the High Street meets the end of Brampton Way and the tree at Clarence House.

Portishead’s longest serving lights volunteer Geoff Smith, has been asked to switch the lights on this year, along with Santa and town dignitaries.

As a boy Geoff, now in his 50s, helped his father Phil, the owner of Bullough Bros. electrical shop in the High Street, prepare for the Christmas lights each year.

The Christmas lights will be switched on, on Monday November 23 at 6.30pm in front of Iceland in the High Street. Santa will arrive on his sleigh with his elves and will be happy to collect letters from children who want to tell him how good they have been this year. Organisers have asked parents to ensure their children include names and addresses on their letters so that Santa and his helpers can reply. There will also be a Santa’s post box in Goodman and Lilley in the High Street.

Santa will be joined on stage by local dignitaries and rugby players from Bristol Rugby Club, who will all help to flick the switch before a finale of fireworks, marking the countdown to the festive season.

he Portishead Lions Defibrillator Project has taken a significant step forward.

Following the first placement outside Boots on Portishead High Street a lot of work has been carried out identifying potential sites, gaining agreement, ensuring all technical issues are dealt with and raising funds.

A programme of installation has now begun with the installation of a defibrillator in Weston in Gordano in the disused telephone box by the White Lion Inn. This innovative site was the result of the Parish Council’s initiative and the villagers contributed £1100 to the project.

Both Lion President Nick Gough and Parish Council Chairman Peter Yates-Round paid tribute to the way in which the public had given their support to the Lions project.

By mid-November the Lions Club will have installed more units at the five Primary Schools in the area and the club plans to have a defibrillator in place within easy access of all members of the public in the Portishead district.

Victorian Evening P

ortishead’s Victorian Evening is one of the main fundraising activities for the town’s Christmas lights. It started in the 1970s as a few stalls in the White Lion car park and has grown in to a street fair stretching from the Precinct to the Poacher.

On Friday December 11 the High Street will be transformed in to a Victorian street market as the town turns back the clocks for this festive fundraising event.

The smell of roasting chestnuts, pork rolls and mulled wine will waft in to the High Street between 6.30-8.30pm when the street will be closed to traffic.

A wide variety of stalls will allow charities, community groups and traders to promote their cause and sell their wares, while shops will stay open into the evening to allow visitors to do some Christmas shopping.

There will be traditional fairground rides and stalls like the coconut shy and a children’s Ferris wheel and street entertainers.

Everyone is invited to dress in Victorian costume.

Concert to support Posset Amyloidosis research Pieces P T ortishead mum Gill Scott and her daughter, Emma have organised a Grand Charity Concert in aid of Amyloidosis.

The concert, which will include Bristol Strictly Champions 2015, Sing Out Bristol and Wendy Sergeant’s Community Choir will take place at Somerset Hall in Portishead High Street on November 21 at 7.30pm.

Gill said: “We knew nothing about Amyloidosis until it touched our family in 2013. Since then, we have raised funds for research and have visited the Centre, based at The Royal Free Hospital in London which is the only facility in the world which conducts research into, and supports patients with Amyloidosis.”

Local policing Meet your neighbourhood team and have your say about policing in Portishead

embers of the local community can meet up with members of the Portishead neighbourhood police team at a number of different venues in the town, providing an opportunity to discuss any policing issues they may have.

You can drop into the beat surgery in Portishead Library between 2-4pm on Saturday November 7 or on December 5.

Officers are also available in the mobile police station at Sainsbury’s between 9am and 3pm once a month. The next dates are Friday November 20 and Thursday December 17.

Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meetings are held bi-monthly. These are open public meetings at which members of the community can raise issues affecting their neighbourhood with representatives from North Somerset Council, police and other agencies getting involved in finding solutions. The next meeting will take place on Thursday November 26 at the Folk Hall (top floor but there is a lift) in Portishead High Street between 7-8.30pm.

Kira Project T

he Kira Project is a three year project where Gordano Valley Church (GVC) is working in partnership with UK charity TEAR fund and FECABU, to provide health and sanitation teaching in rural communities in central Burundi, East Africa.

Members of the church are working with households, schools and health centres to educate and empower the community to enable them to change behaviour and use best practice in their sanitation and hygiene.

As a result, families will benefit from less disease, better health and a more promising future.

GVC has organised a variety of fund-raising activities which have included sponsored walks, coffee mornings, cake sales and a nearly new sale, whisky tasting, an open garden, a visit to Butcombe Brewery and a coin trail.

Swift action to clear footpath

he Bristol Port Company has been praised for its swift action in clearing a permissive footpath between Sheepway in Portbury and Portishead Sea Wharf.

On August 25 local resident Annette Hennessy contacted the Port Company informing them of the overgrown state of the path, close to the nature reserve and used regularly by numerous walkers. Within two weeks work to improve the path began.

Mrs Hennessy said: “I could not believe the swiftness of the response and prompt clearing of the path. So many people have commented positively on the improvement and perhaps knowing how long things can take sometimes when a matter is raised, I think many were more than a little surprised that the concerns about brambles, overhanging branches etc., were resolved so quickly. I had no doubt the Port Company would help but I never imagined how speedily this would be done. The help and hard work of the team involved, means a great deal to those of us who walk this route.”

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, Macmillan Cancer Support’s annual flagship fundraiser, is celebrating its 25th year.

Demystifying Divorce – Did you know

If you feel your marriage has come to an end or you are already separated, understanding how to get a divorce as well as cutting short rumours surrounding the process can help to reduce your concerns.

Here are some misconceptions about divorce that Family Solicitor Marjha GoldingEvans hears on a regular basis.

1. I can only get divorced if adultery has been committed.

There are five grounds on which you can say to the court you wish to divorce: • Adultery of your spouse • Desertion for more than 2 years • The unreasonable behaviour of your spouse • The fact that you have been separated for two years and you both agree to the divorce • If you have been separated for five years

spouse wants to challenge it. This means you do not usually have to give evidence at court, helping to reduce stress and keeping your costs down. Your divorce order will be pronounced or read out by a Judge; it is rare for either party to choose to attend.

• Respondent – the person who is being divorced

3. The courts decide what happens to my children as well as my finances.

It is important to know that you remain married until the Decree Absolute is granted.

The court does not make decisions about your finances or arrangements for children unless you make a separate application.

The court respects the fact that you may wish to decide this for yourselves if you can. You can try to reach an agreement using options such as mediation, talking to each other in person or asking your solicitor to negotiate for you.

4. Divorce is very complicated and full of legal jargon.

The law around divorce is old fashioned and there are many legal terms which are still used that might seem out of date or confusing. However, once you know a few key terms, the process can become much clearer.

Portishead business celebrates 40 years of success

E

stablished in 1975 T & G is proud to be celebrating its 40th anniversary in the housewares industry. Based in Old Mill Road, Portishead, T & G has been a local employer for over 37 years.

T & G is a brand leader in the housewares industry, designing and manufacturing kitchen accessories.

They supply independent cook shops, gift shops, garden centres and major high street retailers throughout the UK. They also have a thriving global export market.

You will almost certainly have seen many of their products in retail outlets, on TV cookery programmes and in magazines!

T & G are also suppliers to the catering industry and over the years their products, especially mills, can be seen in many of the well-known restaurant chains, including Pizza Express and Zizzi’s.

Starting in September 1975, Patrick Gardner set up T & G with a very small range of woodware from Portugal sold under the name Theobald & Gardner. In September 1979, Patrick bought the shares of Reg Theobald and kept the acronym T & G, becoming T &G Woodware Ltd. Patrick remains managing director today.

The product range became larger, embracing many different areas from spoons to chopping boards and mug trees to bread bins in maritime pine and beech wood. From a field of about 12 serious importers in 1984, T & G became the largest distributor of wooden

an independent guarantee that the forest from where the wood comes, is managed to agreed social, environmental and economical standards.

T & G dropped the “Woodware” part of its name and recently launched a clearer logo to make it easier for consumers to spot and then Google T & G products. Naturally, woodware ranges continue to evolve, as the company’s recent collaboration with designer Sophie Conran shows.

There have been many changes over the years but T & G goes from strength to strength, building on its reputation of design, quality and function.

T & G currently employs 46 staff, many from the Portishead and surrounding areas.

As a local business T & G are always keen to kitchenware in the UK and in 1986 produced the first colour catalogue illustrating woodware support local charities where possible. any shops in Portishead are well worth seeking out and Bakey Wakey is one of them.

This family run business in Old Mill Road is every baker’s dream.

Bakey Wakey is open six days a week and stocks just about everything a baker needs, and with new stock arriving almost daily, if they don’t have what you want today, they may well have it tomorrow.

When I visited Bakey Wakey I was given a warm welcome from Melanie Grohmann, who works with Charlotte and Jane to make up the small friendly team that runs the shop and showroom.

For those who know me, I am no baker, but I couldn’t help being impressed by the extensive range of stock on the shelves, from Renshaw coloured fondant of every colour under the sun to giant teddy and train baking tins.

Melanie explained: “We hire out a number of items like seven tier cake stands and the big cake tins are hired out from as little as £3 for three days. We listen to what our customers want and try to accommodate them.”

As I observed a stream of customers coming and going I was amazed at the talents of Portishead cooks as they discussed the special occasion cakes they were making with Melanie, who helped them find exactly what they were looking for from a gigantic cake board to something to make a snail’s head from!

This shop is well worth a visit and Melanie emphasises people are welcome to browse with no obligation to buy.

If you are thinking of being creative the studio offers you the chance to learn different cake decorating and crafting skills with regular workshops and courses.

Children’s parties

The studio also offers cake decorating children’s parties. You choose the theme and take along your own party food and Bakey Wakey will do the rest.

I had no idea how much goes on at Bakey Wakey, it really is well worth a visit.

hoosing where to host the office Christmas party can be tricky; the office festive celebration is a great opportunity to show staff your appreciation and so it’s important to find something to appeal to all staff members.

Last year members of the Gordano Media team were treated to a great festive fun night out at the Walton Park Hotel in Clevedon.

The evening began with us meeting in the relaxing Terrace Bar for a few drinks before moving on to join other diners in one of the stunning suites for a three course meal.

The traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings was delicious; it was served promptly and was piping hot. One thing we all commented on was that we dined in spacious and comfortable surroundings, so often venues cram in as many tables as possible at Christmastime leaving guests feeling cramped, but not at the Walton Park.

In addition, the service was excellent, which added to the experience.

As soon as the meal was over it was time to really get the Christmas party started.

With tunes spanning decades and a DJ who was fun and encouraging, the disco allowed us to dance the night away.

With great service, great food and great entertainment, it was the perfect evening.

Countdown to Christmas

Christmas Charity Ball A

group of friends from Portishead are organising a charity Christmas Ball for the second year running, to support charities close to their hearts.

The event on December 5 takes place at The Venue in Slade Road and will include dancing to a live band and disco, a buffet supper, raffle and an auction.

Last year’s ball raised around £4,000 for The Brain Tumour charity and Bibic, a charity that supports children with autism and learning difficulties.

This year the event will raise funds for Penny Brohn Cancer Care and the Richard Bright renal unit at Southmead Hospital.

Organisers invite family, friends and members of the local community to join them for this wonderful fundraiser which runs from 7.30pm until late.

Tickets cost £20 each

and this includes a glass of bubbly on arrival.

Pantomime Time Portishead Players will stage the popular traditional pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, at Somerset Hall in Portishead High Street from December 10-12 with evening performances and also a matinee on the Saturday.

Featuring all the well-known characters, the strong cast includes an outrageous dame, a beautiful princess, an evil witch, a sprinkling of fairies, a pantomime horse, a royal family and plenty of comedy scenes. Colourful costumes, amazing sound effects, popular sing-along songs and audience participation will combine to make this a not-tobe-missed production.

Ida Portishead Film will be screening ‘Ida’, a moving and intimate drama about a sheltered orphan preparing to become a nun in 1960s Poland. The orphan is sent to visit her sole living relative at the insistence of her mother superior. Naïve, innocent Anna soon finds herself in the presence of her aunt Wanda, a worldly and cynical Communist Party insider, who shocks her with the declaration that her real name is Ida and her Jewish parents were murdered during the Nazi occupation.

Powerfully written and eloquently shot, ‘Ida’ is a masterly evocation of a time, a dilemma, and a defining historical moment and is a moving and affecting film.

Firework Extravaganza Don’t miss Portishead Town Football Club’s firework extravaganza on Friday November 6 at the Bristol Road grounds. Gates open at 6pm for the display that starts at 7.30pm. There will be a barbecue and bar with all the proceeds going to sustain the club and its facilities which provide football and a social venue for the whole community. Tickets cost £5 in advance or £7 on the gate or family tickets (2 adults and 2 children) £10 in advance and £15 on the gate.

Tickets are available from committee members and The Sports Shop in High Street, Mark’s Barbers at West Hill and White Cot Stores in St Peter’s Road. There will be disabled parking only at the club so please walk if you can or park a short distance away and walk to the ground.

Rugby Club Bonfire Night

Nailsea and Backwell Rugby Club in West End Park, Nailsea will be holding its huge bonfire night event on Saturday, November 7.

Fireworks will be accompanied by a bonfire, beer tent, hot food and refreshments.

Nailsea and Backwell Rugby Club’s Bonfire Night has been running annually for the last 16 years and is always popular. You can pay on the gate but can avoid the long queues by getting your tickets in advance. Family tickets for a family of four are £12, adults are £5 and children under 16 get in for £3.

There will be refreshments available and stalls including the ever-popular ‘Glow Light’ stall.

Please be aware that no alcohol, dogs, personal fireworks or sparklers are allowed.

his month I’m going to be taking a look at cruise holidays and how their popularity has boomed over the last five years. As a cruise specialist and frequent traveller with a young family on these spectacular ships I can honestly say cruising is a fantastic way to discover new destinations for all ages, I even found myself a husband on one!

Exercise of the Month: The Barbell Deadlift by

Matt Bembridge Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides advice for those who work out. This month he talks you through the Barbell Deadlift.

T

his summer I was fortunate enough to join Eddie Hall, Britain’s Strongest Man and Deadlift World Record Holder, for a deadlift session.

What I like most about Eddie’s deadlift is that he’s simplified his conventional deadlift to achieve perfect technique and go from a 400kg deadlift to a superhuman 463kg deadlift world record.

While none of us will ever lift anywhere near this, we can learn from Eddie’s methods to improve our own deadlifts in the gym, and this in turn gives us a strong core and teaches good habits for general lifting activity in our day-today lives as well.

One very simple thing that Eddie states is to ensure that the bar travels in a straight vertical line to make the lift as efficient as possible. He practices this by placing tape on the floor in

line with the bar and plants the middle of his feet on the tape (NB: Your foot position may be a little different, depending on your make up).

He also uses my new Deadlift Deadener™ load distribution product; it’s designed to avoid damaging the floor and gym equipment, but as a by-product it also encourages a straight vertical lift.

Something else, and it’s something that I’ve never heard before, treat the deadlift like a leg press.

Hold on to the bar as though they’re handles on a leg press machine and then leg press the ground away from the bar; this sounds rather bizarre, but it helps achieve the best deadlift body position of retracted shoulders, a neutral

spine and a good angle at the knees and hips.

Q.

My 10-year-old Labrador, Billy, has always been fit and healthy but I’ve noticed over the last year that he isn’t as keen to go out for walks as he used to be. Is this just old age or should I get him checked out?

A.

At 10 years of age Billy will now be classed as geriatric, that’s the equivalent of approximately 70 in human years!

At this age dogs and cats can start to get old age problems but when an otherwise healthy, elderly dog starts slowing down, arthritis is one of the things I would consider.

Recognising the symptoms of arthritis will help you get the right support for your pet. Your pet may be less keen to go for walks, become very stiff when getting up, no longer jump up onto a favourite sleeping place and no longer being able to get in and out of the car. And don’t forget cats; they can suffer from arthritis too but are masters of disguise so look out for them no longer sleeping in higher places or being less keen to go outside.

If you are suspicious of arthritis you should take your pet to the vets for a health check. As old age approaches other problems can occur too so the vet will want to make sure that there is nothing else concerning them.

If your pet is diagnosed with arthritis there are many treatments on the market to help manage their pain.

Other things you can do to help include providing a nice cushioned bed that is low to the floor, providing a ramp up into the car or on steps in and out of the house and make sure your pet is not carrying too much weight. It is important to keep them moving but little and often is better than big long walks.

R

esidents in North Somerset are being urged to give a few hours of their time to help provide companionship and practical help to isolated older people in the area.

The Royal Voluntary Service has been working in the local communities since 1938.

They aim to provide a free Good Neighbours befriending service to the elderly who live in the local communities. At present the amount of referrals is at an all-time high due to the amount of elderly living amongst us, many of the elderly have no family or friends nearby and this can lead to social isolation and in some cases depression.

Good Neighbours volunteers can help older people stay independent, safe and well. The service, which was awarded £15k from Players of People’s Postcode Lottery earlier this year, offers confidential telephone befriending as well

as home visits.

More volunteers who are able to give up 1-2 hours per week are now urgently needed.

They can make a tremendous difference to someone living in social isolation; visits may be calling in for a chat and a cup of tea to help pass the day or help someone access local amenities or just even a walk in the fresh air.

Volunteers need to be good at listening and talking to people.

Training is provided by Royal Voluntary Service and travelling expenses are paid. Driving roles require the use of your own car and a full, clean driving licence.

Each month Ali Redwood of Tax Assist Accountants in Portishead answers some of your business and accountancy questions. This month she has chosen a question raised by those renting properties.

Q

My husband and I have a couple of rental properties between us. I earn £10k and he earns over £60k per year in PAYE . We heard that there were some proposed changes in the last budget that will affect how much mortgage interest we can offset against the rental income. What do these changes mean?

A

At the moment, the proposed measures have not yet been confirmed as law but it is likely they will be. The first change is the removal of the 10% wear and tear allowance which is applicable where properties are fully furnished. Instead you will be able to reclaim the replacement cost of any furnishing items. The second change will have an impact on your husband’s tax position starting from April 2017 although as a basic rate tax payer, you are unlikely to be unaffected. Over a period of four years, the amount of mortgage interest relief allowed for higher rate tax payers will reduce gradually and this will naturally increase the amount of tax payable.

The tax increase will vary depending on other income sources so there is no one answer for each individual. If you would like a factsheet or any further information, please give us a call on 01275 390596

ell we ploughed, scattered, planted, watered and weeded (if you’re planning to get an allotment never underestimate the weeding) and then we harvested.

It’s always the best bit and rather than freezing loads we love to share it. A big sorry to those who didn’t get any this year but the Slimming World girls were particularly grateful and it does help avert focus from any weight gain! There’s a method in my madness.

A big thing at Gertie’s this month is - how do you know when sweetcorn is ready? We’re probably not the best allotmenteers to ask, given our first three were picked too early, but for some odd reason people refer to Allotment Virgin and seem to think we’re joking when we say we know nothing. We’re not, honestly. So a quick referral to best mate Alan Titchmarsh (sorry Penny) tells us sweetcorn is ripe when the silky tassels turn brown and dry up, but double check by peeling back a little of the sheath to expose a few kernels and press a thumbnail

THE GRATE INDOORS into one or two, if clear liquid spurts out the cob is not quite ripe; its ready when the juice is milky. Just what we said obviously!

Interestingly, poor pollination can result in gappy cobs where there are areas without kernels. These are still edible, which is a good job really as ours were quite gappy!

A couple of other good tips are when harvesting cabbage, leave the root and cut a cross in the stalk for an extra crop of leaves and if you plan to grow beans next year, dig a trench now and fill it with kitchen waste to enrich the soil for the future crop.

At this rate we’re going to be ‘Allotment Experts’ before you know it.

Sweetcorn, chicken and noodle soup It had to be sweetcorn! Diet friendly but you can cheat with a tin of sweetcorn if necessary. Don’t worry, no-one will know!

Serves 2 • 2 Sweetcorn cobs (or more if they’re gappy! Or half a small tin if you’re cheating!))

• ½ small onion, finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, peeled & finely diced • 400ml chicken stock • 30g dried vermicelli • 100g cooked chicken breast • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley Fry onion & garlic in low cal cooking spray for 2 mins.

Add stock, sweetcorn and vermicelli and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and cook gently for 8 mins. If using tinned sweetcorn only add in the final minute.

Add the chicken and parsley. Cook for 3 mins.

Serve with Nimble bread or be daring and try a nice warm crusty roll with a dollop of butter!

Insect boxes a success D uring spring Portishead in Bloom gave two insect houses, summer bulbs and meadow seeds to each of the five primary/junior schools in the town and one insect house, bulbs and seeds to Gordano School.

Many of the insect houses are now sited on the outer wall of Portishead Open Air Pool where they were admired by the judges of the South West in Bloom contest.

Portishead in Bloom has presented two awards for achievement naming St Joseph’s box the best decorated insect house and giving the best project work award to High Down for their project on bees.

A spokesman for Portishead in Bloom said:

“All these excellent efforts from the schools contributed to Portishead’s success in this year’s South West in Bloom competition where the town came top in its group and was awarded the gold flag. Portishead in Bloom enjoys working with the local schools and will soon be asking pupils to take part in a painting competition organised by the Royal Horticultural Society.”
