Welcome

Matt Rogers. 1971 - 2025

Dear Everyman Patrons, Friends and Supporters,

It is with a heavy heart that I dedicate my introduction to our summer season to Matt Rogers, who passed away recently following a 3 year battle with Leukemia.

Matt has been part of the Everyman Theatre family for 22 years and served as our Theatre Manager for 15 of those years. He was extraordinarily dedicated to delivering the best possible care to our staff and everyone who visited the Everyman each and every week. Matt had a very calm and reassuring presence here and the outpouring of grief from our staff has been very humbling to witness.

The concepts of service and duty, which seem somehow outmoded these days, were not to Matt. He served this theatre with passion and instilled a duty of care within his team, meaning our guests received the best possible service, our shows went up on time and everyone was treated with courtesy and respect. He gave more time to the theatre than we could ever expect, and his dedication to the Everyman will always be remembered.

Matt was also devoted to his family. We all extend our best wishes to his teenage daughter and will try and support his family as best we can.

On your next visit to the theatre we hope that you will benefit from the legacy of Matt’s dedication to our guests and will experience the best possible evening at the theatre. Please share a thought for those staff members who not only lost a colleague, but for some, the very best of friends. Matt believed in the old theatre cliché that the show must go on. In his memory we will make sure that it does and look forward to seeing you very soon at the Everyman Theatre.

Sincerely,

@EverymanTheatreCheltenham

DREYFUS JAMES WILBY

By Royal Appointment

The late Queen Elizabeth II was famous for her discretion. She never said anything in public that could ruffle the lightest of feathers. But she had one way of expressing what she really thought – through her wardrobe.

By Royal Appointment is a funny, poignant and celebratory new play about the kind of power that only a Queen can wield – she charms the world through coats and admonishes her family through a carefully chosen hat.

But the Queen herself is uninterested in fashion, her look is managed by her Designer, her Milliner and most powerful of all, her Dresser who was a working-class girl who goes from advising the Queen on the colour of her lipsticks to the real power behind the throne. But the Dresser, like all royal favourites is living on borrowed time.

By Royal Appointment is a behind the scenes peek into the world of our most popular monarch and the image she presented to the world. Starring national treasure Anne Reid as The Queen, doyen of stage and screen Caroline Quentin as The Dresser, with Olivier awardwinning James Dreyfus as The Milliner and Merchant Ivory and Poldark legendary James Wilby as The Designer. The new play is written by Daisy Goodwin who created the hit ITV series Victoria and directed by former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, Dominic Dromgoole.

Just Between Ourselves

Five birthdays.

Two unhappy marriages.

One possessive mother.

It's 1976. Dennis tinkers in his garage, cheerfully indifferent to his wife Vera's impending breakdown. Marjorie hovers in the background, making tea and finding fault. Neil has planned a birthday surprise for his wife, but Pam doesn't share his enthusiasm, preoccupied by frustrations of her own.

In perhaps his most emotionally charged play, Alan Ayckbourn masterfully evokes a world of hidden tensions and suppressed hostility.  He skilfully navigates the tightrope between comedy and tragedy,

guiding us towards a hilarious yet chilling finale.

An Olivier and Tony Award-winning playwright, Alan Ayckbourn's ninety plays have been produced worldwide. Notable successes include The Norman Conquests, Relatively Speaking, Bedroom Farce, A Chorus of Disapproval, and Communicating Doors.

Following successful tours of Absent Friends (2015) and Absurd Person Singular (2020-21), Alan Ayckbourn's 1976 masterclass in suburban comedy and heartbreak will form the centrepiece of London Classic Theatre's 25th Anniversary celebrations.

The Talented Mr Ripley

"I never wanted to murder anyone. It was necessary."

This electrifying new stage adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley brings Patricia Highsmith’s iconic psychological thriller to life like never before. With razor-sharp dialogue, simmering tension, and a dangerously charismatic antihero, this gripping production will pull you into Ripley’s intoxicating world—where nothing is quite as it seems.

Tom Ripley is a nobody—scraping by in New York, forging signatures, telling little white lies—until a chance encounter changes everything. When a wealthy stranger offers him an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy to bring home his wayward son, Dickie Greenleaf, Tom leaps at the opportunity.

But in the sun-drenched glamour of 1950s Italy, surrounded by shimmering waters and whispered secrets, Tom is seduced by the life Dickie leads—the freedom, the wealth, the effortless charm. Fascination turns to obsession, and as his grip tightens on Dickie’s world, the lines between truth and deception begin to blur. What starts as an innocent opportunity spirals into a chilling game of lies, identity theft, and murder.

Guys And Dolls

Frank Loesser's celebrated musical comedy about rolling the dice and falling in love under the bright lights of Broadway.

Guys And Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend, nightclub performer Adelaide, laments that they've been engaged for 14 years.

Nathan turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, but Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown.

Guys And Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of the City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

Frank Loesser's brassy, immortal score makes Guys And Dolls a crowd pleaser.

He's approaching sixty with debilitating health conditions, his TV profile has diminished, and his once BAFTA awardwinning style of stand-up seems obsolete.

But Hamilton was also an alcoholic, whose wit darkened as his inner and outer worlds collapsed.

In Alfie’s fantasy world, it’s hard to tell who he is – rockstar, guru, actor, shark. Which version of him is showing up today?

Renowned autistic artists Cian Binchy (The Level, ITV) and Anna Constable (Imposter 22, Royal Court) bend the lines of fantasy, reality and masking, as they try to figure out how to be in the world.

When the person you show to the world is just a mask, what’s underneath? A small enclosed room with a shark. What could go wrong?

Montague Terrace

In the heart of London, an old Victorian terrace harbours the stories of four strangers separated by decades. Amid the rubble of 1944 and the struggles of a pandemic-stricken present, their lives echo across time, watched over by an ancient Plane tree that has witnessed it all.

The lives of Jim, Helena, David, and Sarah are mysteriously interconnected, with their struggles and triumphs resonating across the decades. The narrative weaves between these two timelines, with the ancient tree as a silent observer.

When Vincent Met John

Vincent died in 1890, John died in 1980, both of gunshot wounds to the chest. But imagine what might have happened had the two greatest artists of their time met?

Vincent van Gogh was a nineteenthcentury Dutch PostImpressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.

John Lennon was an English singer, songwriter, musician, and peace activist who became worldwide famous with The Beatles.

This play takes place at their exact moment of crisis and decision, exploring love, death, art and legacy.
