Message from the CEO Dear neighbors, I hope you are enjoying the summer in the Northwest, and perhaps a sense of hope that a new season brings.

While the past year hasn’t been easy for our community, I’m humbled and grateful to join you in acknowledging just how far we’ve all come. As we continue to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic with caution and urgency, I’m thankful to our community for staying the course with us. Along with the dedication of every EvergreenHealth physician, staff member and volunteer, it’s because of your commitment and contributions that we’ve progressed to where we are today.

In fact, it’s your support that has helped EvergreenHealth’s mission, vision and values endure across the decades, and we’re energized to continue that legacy of passion, purpose and accountability as we grow alongside our community.

On the Front Lines: An EvergreenHealth Nurse’s Experience with COVID-19 Throughout the pandemic, ICU nurse Tammy Wiatrowski turned to her journal to process her new reality Throughout the first year of the pandemic, Wiatrowski consistently wrote in her journal. She’d finish a 12-hour shift and journal to process the difficult day. For Wiatrowski, the isolation of COVID-19 was difficult not only for patients but for her, too.

For years, EvergreenHealth registered nurse Tammy Wiatrowski, kept a journal to chronicle her stories from the Intensive Care Unit. Wiatrowski began her nursing career by jotting down things that touched her heart or were difficult to process.

On Feb. 28, 2020, when EvergreenHealth became the first hospital in the country to diagnose and treat an influx of patients with community-spread COVID-19, Wiatrowski decided to begin a new journal—little did she know how much was to come in the next year.

Wiatrowski vividly recalls the moment when clinical staff learned that the virus had arrived. As they stood together digesting the news, Wiatrowski described every caregiver preparing themselves—in a matter of minutes—to risk their lives to save patients regardless of the unknowns presented by the novel coronavirus.

“The art of nursing changed. I love comforting families and if I was able to do so, I felt that I helped every family and could go home feeling rewarded, even if they’d lost a loved one,” Wiatrowski wrote. “But the pandemic changed it all. I learned to convey care and compassion through the phone instead of putting my arms around people.”

The pandemic also created distance between Wiatrowski and her loved ones. As a grandmother of five, Wiatrowski regularly hosted her grandchildren for slumber parties and Nerf gun fights—all of which were paused in the interest of keeping everyone safe.

When Wiatrowski herself contracted COVID-19, she felt isolated from her work family too because she wanted to help them fight the pandemic. Journaling brought her comfort as she recovered at home, thankful that her symptoms didn’t require hospitalization, but uncertain how her body would ultimately respond to the virus and whether she would fully recover.

Thankfully, much has changed since the early months of the pandemic. While COVID-19 is still very real, communities have access to vaccine, and for the first time in a year, many have hope. Wiatrowski is now back, caring for patients in the ICU and prouder than ever to be a nurse. She is also now able to see her grandchildren and recently hosted the biggest, best slumber party with them.

Tammy’s experience, and her journal entries, were featured in a The New York Times article, “24 Hours in the Pandemic.” You can also listen to her read excerpts from her journal on the NYT podcast “The Daily,” which aired April 13, 2020.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, plans for the health system’s new ICU were well underway to provide the same exceptional, safe care for patients and their families by implementing advanced technologies in a modern, innovative environment with increased efficiencies for staff that also supports family-inclusive care.

NEW LOCATION By relocating the ICU to the third floor of the Silver Tower, the 20-bed unit will be closer to other clinical specialties, along with amenities like the café, parking garages and the main entrance, which will ease the experience for patients and families.

EvergreenHealth’s new Intensive Care Unit will begin caring for patients in July Talented construction crews are putting the finishing touches on EvergreenHealth’s new state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which will open its doors to patients and families in July. The newly constructed ICU enables the health system to continue serving patients and families with the compassionate, high-quality care and service that EvergreenHealth has been recognized for providing for 50 years—a legacy that continues today.

The new ICU creates intentional spaces within patient rooms, and across the unit, that help families feel welcome and included in their loved one’s care. In addition, the unit will have private consultation rooms for families to gather as a group, seek solitude or talk with their clinical team.

FORWARD-THINKING DESIGN The entire unit is designed to accommodate new medical and technological innovations as they emerge. By building in the structural flexibility to integrate new systems and equipment, the unit can plan for the future without requiring further renovations.

We look forward to sharing grand opening plans in the coming weeks as the ICU nears completion.

A Fresh Start: A Kirkland Woman’s Journey to Lasting Relief After years of relentless pain, a minimally invasive hysterectomy offered hope and healing When Kirkland resident Wendy DeRobbio isn’t busy parenting her two daughters, or balancing her career as a program manager for King County, you’re likely to find her at an Eastside mixed martial arts studio that she owns with her husband.

For a decade, DeRobbio battled relentless pain—severe abdominal cramping, painful menstrual cycles and heavy bleeding for the majority of each month.

After pursuing several interventions, including a surgical procedure to remove her uterine lining, DeRobbio finally felt relief from her constant pain. But in October 2020, the surgery unexpectedly failed; DeRobbio’s symptoms returned with more pain.

She was soon referred to EvergreenHealth OB/GYN, Dr. Semonti Hossain. Together, they decided the best option for managing DeRobbio’s symptoms was a hysterectomy.

“When I met Dr. Hossain, I was surprised by the number of hysterectomy choices available. I imagined I’d have a huge scar,” shared DeRobbio. “With Dr. Hossain’s guidance, we decided to move forward with a laparoscopic hysterectomy, which was much less invasive.”

While DeRobbio awaited surgery, she chatted with EvergreenHealth nurses and anesthesiologists. They comforted her and raved about Dr. Hossain’s compassionate and high-quality care, quickly lessening DeRobbio’s presurgery nerves.

“A hysterectomy is a significant procedure, and for many women, an emotional decision. By the time I met Wendy, she was mentally where she needed to be, and we created a plan to proceed with the procedure,” Dr. Hossain described.

Within days of surgery, DeRobbio’s pain vanished, along with all symptoms prior to her hysterectomy. DeRobbio quickly learned the reason for her pain and failed ablation. She suffered from adenomyosis, a condition where endometrial tissue exists and grows within the uterus.

“Although a hysterectomy is an elective procedure, I knew it was right for me after meeting with Dr. Hossain. She is the best—she’s personable, vibrant and gave me a sense of confidence in both myself and her,” DeRobbio said.

From Hospital Volunteer to Physician: Meet Dr. Semonti Hossain Semonti Hossain, MD, OB/GYN, EvergreenHealth Obstetrics and Gynecology Care, Tan

When you grow up in the Pacific Northwest, it can be hard to leave this special region.

That was the case for Bothell native Dr. Semonti Hossain whose ties to EvergreenHealth began in high school, when she was a gift shop volunteer. Though medical school and residency took her to the Boston area, she eventually wanted to return to the Northwest.

When a position opened with EvergreenHealth Obstetrics and Gynecology Care, she jumped at the opportunity to join the practice last fall. Dr. Hossain’s clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of gynecologic care—founded on her care philosophy to partner with her patients and appreciate that each stage in a woman's life introduces a new set of challenges.

She’s also passionate about global health and has traveled to Haiti and Bangladesh to connect with local communities and improve maternal health. In addition, Dr. Hossain volunteers as the reproductive health lead for HerWILL, an organization that fosters development of Bangladeshi female professionals.

Now that she’s back in the Northwest, Dr. Hossain enjoys exploring local cafe´s, trying international cuisine and learning about new cultures through travel with her family.

Recognizing a Career of Community Service Radiation oncologist Dr. Eric Taylor was recently honored with the EvergreenHealth Board of Commissioners’ 2020 Community Service Award Every year, EvergreenHealth’s Board of Commissioners recognizes an individual or organization who has made a profound impact on enhancing the community's health with its esteemed Community Service Award.

Following a thoughtful selection process, the Commissioners selected EvergreenHealth radiation oncologist Dr. Eric Taylor as this year’s recipient. Dr. Taylor’s significant contributions to the community mirror EvergreenHealth's organizational values—compassion, respect, excellence, collaboration and accountability—and the commitment he and the Commissioners share to further EvergreenHealth’s mission, vision and values through selfless service and leadership.

Recognizing the opportunity to bring superior cancer care and service to the Eastside, Dr. Taylor was the major gifts co-chair for the capital campaign that raised funds to establish the EvergreenHealth Halvorson Cancer Center. In addition, Dr. Taylor played a leading role in establishing EvergreenHealth’s partnership with Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

Welcoming Jason Wood, EvergreenHealth CIO EvergreenHealth recently welcomed Jason Wood, MBA, MS, as its new chief information officer (CIO). Most recently, he served as CIO for OptumCareNorthwest, a health care network which includes several Washingtonand Oregon-based clinics and physician groups.

platform where you and your provider will securely chat during your visit.

> Your care team will share a unique URL and access code prior to your appointment. > Make sure you have a stable internet connection, and you know which device you’ll be using for

the appointment. You’ll also want to ensure you’re in a private, well-lit space.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM A VIRTUAL VISIT?

> A virtual visit is very similar to an in-person visit. You’ll still meet with your provider face-to-face

and will have an opportunity to ask questions and share your concerns.

> You’ll receive the same care and attention you expect from a traditional visit with your provider.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A VIRTUAL VISIT?

> Your provider will schedule any necessary follow-ups with you, share additional care instructions and send in any

prescriptions to your pharmacy, just like an in-person visit.

> Your insurance will also be billed as usual; there is no difference in cost.

We Honor Veterans Hospice Program

Burke Barker Former EvergreenHealth Hospice Care patient

Burke Barker’s heroic service in the Army earned him a Purple Heart after he sustained life-threatening injuries in Vietnam.

For Burke and those around him, his military service had a much greater impact on him than his injuries or the recognition. His service instilled values of honor, integrity and duty that helped shape Burke into a loving husband, devoted father and steadfast community leader.

In 2017, Burke passed peacefully with family at his side under home hospice care from EvergreenHealth. As part of the We Honor Veterans program, developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs, EvergreenHealth’s Hospice Care team received special training and resources to meet the unique needs of veterans like Burke. These practices reflect our commitment to providing the best possible care for our American heroes while we guide them and their families toward a peaceful passing.

Today, Burke Barker’s legacy lives on thanks to his loving wife Jeanne’s generous support of the We Honor Veterans program at EvergreenHealth Hospice. Jeanne’s gift, along with donations from other grateful families, ensures that all veterans are shown the respect, dignity and honor they deserve during their end-of-life transition.

2020 Evergreen Virtual Gala Supports ICU Patients The Impella is the world’s smallest heart pump, which facilitates blood and oxygen delivery to the entire body by pumping blood to the aorta, allowing the heart to rest and hemodynamic stabilization to occur. This device performs lifesaving procedures and is part of improved cardiac care for critically ill patients. Adoption of these innovative devices, supported by funds raised at the 2020 Evergreen Virtual Gala, launched as a collaborative effort with EvergreenHealth’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Cardiology, Catheterization Lab, Nursing, Pharmacy and Hospitalist teams.

A night that rocked! Capped off by a performance by the EvergreenHealth ‘Doc Band,’ the 2021 Evergreen Virtual Gala truly struck a chord with the community.

Message from the CEO & Board Chair Greetings, Every year, our Community Annual Report provides an opportunity to share with you highlights and stories from across our health system that demonstrate our mission in action. While 2020 was certainly a year unlike any other in our history, the values that underpin our mission-guided work together remained as important and relevant as ever.

When EvergreenHealth became the first health system in the country to diagnose and treat an influx of patients with community-spread COVID-19, it left an indelible mark on our hearts, our lives and EvergreenHealth’s place in history.

Throughout 2020, much of our focus centered on responding to the unfolding pandemic, through the delivery of quality critical care, participation in research and clinical trials, providing community education and much more.

At the same time, many of the tenets that ground us as a public hospital district continued to serve as important reminders of our accountability as stewards of our community’s resources.

As you’ll read in this year’s annual report, 2020 was full of important milestones and highlights. Our community united to support one another during a trying year, and our commitment to you never wavered. In fact, many of the programs and resources that we deliver for our community’s benefit, with support from your levy dollars, quickly pivoted and were reimagined to continue safely caring for your health and well-being.

While we were prepared to respond to COVID-19, we still faced uncertainty. We are so grateful for the way our community banded together to support us, and for our physicians, staff and volunteers who demonstrated their continued dedication to serving our community.

Their efforts helped us to again be named among America’s 100 Best HospitalsTM by Healthgrades for the fourth consecutive year. In addition, The Leapfrog Group awarded EvergreenHealth with an “A” grade in patient safety—the highest possible recognition.

Residents elected David Edwards, JD, to represent the community at-large on the health system’s seven-member governing board, with his six-year term beginning in January 2020.

Edwards is a civil rights investigator for the City of Seattle and lifelong resident of Kirkland.

For the fourth consecutive year, EvergreenHealth was named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals™ by Healthgrades for its dedication to high-quality patient care across a broad spectrum of clinical specialties. EvergreenHealth became the first site in the U.S. to enroll qualifying patients in the National Institute of Health’s Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial (ACTT). As one of the many COVID-19 trials that contribute to a global body of work, these trials studied the safety and efficacy of novel therapeutic agents and were later approved for use in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Karen Gahm is a retired social worker and public servant who’s been an active member of the Snohomish County community for 25 years. Gahm replaces Tony Balk, a retired fire commissioner who held a seat on the Monroe City Council for 12 years.

After the CDC expanded testing guidelines, EvergreenHealth became the first hospital in the U.S. to diagnose and treat the country’s first influx of inpatients diagnosed with community spread-COVID-19. The news set in motion EvergreenHealth’s strategically planned response to the emerging pandemic.

Leapfrog, a leading independent watchdog organization on hospital quality and safety, awarded EvergreenHealth with “A” grades in the spring and fall for the health system’s commitment to absolute patient safety.

For the second year in a row, EvergreenHealth received the highest possible rating for quality and safety from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In 2020, the health system became one of six in the Seattle area to receive a five-star overall rating.

After treating the country’s first influx of inpatients diagnosed with COVID-19 in February 2020, EvergreenHealth received its initial shipment of the Moderna vaccine on December 23. By 5 p.m. that evening, the health system began administering first-dose shots to health care workers.

Supporting Patients and Families with Levy-Funded Programs As a public hospital district, EvergreenHealth provides a special benefit to the greater community. Every year, the organization is entrusted as the stewards of the community’s resources to use tax levy funds to meet community health needs. In 2020, more than

$5.9 million in levy funds supported a range of programs designed to provide quality health care, services and resources—often at no charge to the community—to meet patients’ and families’ wellness needs.

Reducing Barriers to High-Quality Health Care & Social Services Community Healthcare Access Team (CHAT)

The levy-funded Community Healthcare Access Team (CHAT) serves residents throughout the Puget Sound region, with the help of a range of community partners, by connecting them with resources for insurance, financial assistance, behavioral health and many other forms of assistance.

CHAT staff are specifically trained in Medicaid and Medicare eligibility, are certified as navigators for Washington’s Healthplanfinder and provide connection and insight into community resources designed to support residents’ well-being.

Providing Education and Resources for Living Well EvergreenHealth Community Health Education

EvergreenHealth’s Community Health Education Services provides hundreds of free and low-cost seminars, workshops and health education classes each year that offer resources to community members for living well. Whether its cooking demonstrations to inspire nutritious eating, exercise groups, emergency preparedness or parenting classes, the health system offers a wide range of curriculum for the community’s benefit to address diverse needs and interests.

In 2020, many of EvergreenHealth’s community education classes made a successful switch to an online format, bringing the benefits of health education to participants virtually and safely.

Among the year-round programs, EvergreenHealth’s Childbirth and Early Parenting Education resources offer dozens of classes to help families navigate the joys and challenges of childbirth and parenting. Its “This Is Not What I Expected” class, which is led by specially trained educators and social workers, meets twice monthly at no cost to participants and offers a safe space for parents struggling with the transition to parenthood.

EvergreenHealth’s 24/7 Nurse Navigator & Healthline continues to offer a levy-funded resource to the community by providing 24/7 on-call nurse support, as well as help with scheduling and referrals and registration for health programs and classes.

In 2020, Healthline played a pivotal role in connecting the community to factual COVID-19 information and resources by launching a dedicated line for answering general questions, providing screening services for employees seeking testing and coordinating vaccine scheduling.

Partnering to Serve Eastside Seniors Northshore Senior Center

Supporting Families with Specialized Geriatric Care EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care

EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care compassionately serves the Eastside community’s patients who are 65 years and older, without requiring a referral. The team of board-certified specialists includes geriatricians, nurses, social workers and pharmacists—all with special training and experience assisting seniors.

The Geriatric Care team assesses patients’ health, including medical conditions, cognitive status, functional ability and mental health needs, to determine the most suitable treatment for each person. This experienced team also works hand-in-hand with each patient’s family and other physicians to create an individualized care plan.

In 2020, EvergreenHealth continued its partnership with Northshore Senior Center (NSC), a Bothell-based nonprofit that provides resources, classes and programs for Eastside seniors. Typically, these programs are held in-person and offer a chance for seniors within the community to connect with one another.

However, to keep seniors safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, all NSC educational and support programs quickly pivoted access to accommodate computer and/ or phone connections with seniors. Some of these online programs included seated body conditioning, balance and strength, yoga, cooking and discussion classes. In addition, experienced NSC Adult Day Health staff provided weekly health and wellness telephone check-ins to support seniors, their families and caregivers.

Given the success of virtual programming, NSC anticipates offering a hybrid model of virtual and in-person programming moving forward.

In 2020, and in light of the pandemic, EvergreenHealth’s partnership with Northshore Senior Center:

Providing Compassionate End-of-Life Care

Navigating the Journey of a Serious Illness

As one of the largest providers of hospice and home health in the Pacific Northwest, EvergreenHealth Home Care cares for thousands of patients and families across King and Snohomish Counties with compassionate end-of-life care.

EvergreenHealth’s levy-funded Palliative Medicine (PM) program serves patients and families facing a serious illness with care and support from compassionate providers who understand the physical and emotional challenges of a concerning diagnosis.

EvergreenHealth Home Care—Home Health and Hospice

The 30-year-old program, which is well known for the quality of its care and service, continued serving patients and families in 2020 but under dramatically different circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic. EvergreenHealth’s hospice care program was among the first in the nation to care for patients with COVID-19, and specifically those at end-of life.

As home care leaders quicky identified patient and staff safety needs, one key strategy was to rapidly establish a telehealth program to continue providing access to care for home health and hospice patients and their families, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

“Hospice providers deliver such personalized and intimate care, but the shift to telemedicine allowed our team to continue to do what they do best, while also keeping families and our staff safe.”

EvergreenHealth’s freestanding Gene & Irene Wockner Hospice Care Center (HCC) also continued serving families under strict transmission-based precautions, which included engineering an entire wing of the HCC to negative pressure airflow to care for hospice patients with COVID-19, ensuring greater safety for families navigating their loved one’s end of life.

EvergreenHealth Palliative Medicine

The PM team’s approach is to offer a much-needed “rest stop” along the journey of navigating a serious medical condition. It’s an opportunity for patients and their families to consult with a PM physician to assess whether symptoms and medical challenges are being managed as effectively as possible.

During the summer of 2020, the PM team members, Dr. Hope Wechkin, Dr. Laura Johnson, Sara Puckey, LICSW and PM Coordinator Sam Clark, welcomed physician Dr. Diane Dozois to the PM team. Dr. Dozois brings more than 20 years of clinical experience and a compassionate approach to patient care. Additionally, Kelly Holiday, LMHC, GMHS, transitioned into the role of PM manager in the fall of 2020. EvergreenHealth’s Palliative Medicine program continues to serve as a model for other palliative programs across Washington state, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, whereby services have expanded to included telehealth visits in addition to in-person Palliative Medicine services.

Resources for Responding to Students in Crisis Youth Mental Health First Aid The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have been difficult for everyone no matter their circumstances. Throughout 2020, students and youth, particularly, faced the challenges of transitioning to remote learning, sudden social isolation and mounting amounts of stress tied to navigating a public health emergency.

For several years, EvergreenHealth’s levy-funded Youth Mental Health programs, in partnership with King County, has provided Youth Mental Health First Aid training to residents of King County. The training teaches participants how to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health challenges and crisis, what to say and how to talk with someone, and how to refer to professional resources for help. Training is funded by King County MIDD, a behavioral health sales tax.

In 2020, EvergreenHealth hosted a series of virtual Youth Mental Health First Aid trainings, which provided educators, coaches and other volunteers who work with students the tools to help adolescents experiencing a mental health crisis or addiction challenge.

Mental health therapists for high schools in the Northshore School District to support students on a referral basis from high school guidance therapists. In 2020, the district’s mental health therapists met virtually with students individually and in small groups to address their needs, and introduced new supportive resources for students grieving from loss of a loved one.

Advocating for the Eastside Community Advancing STEM Education Partnering With Local Schools With help from the community’s levy dollars, EvergreenHealth partners with local school districts to provide middle school and high school students with information and education related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Juanita High School’s Global Health STEM program continued in a virtual setting, which provided opportunities for EvergreenHealth leaders and physicians to present as guest speakers on important health care topics, and for students to remotely attend the hospital’s Grand Rounds.

One student at Juanita High School posed a particularly insightful question at the end of a Grand Rounds about Parkinson’s disease care, which was presented by Dr. Pinky Agarwal, EvergreenHealth neurologist.

Does it relate to circadian rhythms or something similar?”

Through STEM’s partnership with Juanita High School, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in learning about career paths in science, health care and many more industries.

EvergreenHealth Community Advisors Over the past year, EvergreenHealth’s Community Advisors continued to play a meaningful role in ensuring the Eastside community received the factual information necessary during the pandemic, including clinical updates and how to keep yourself and the community safe.

The Community Advisors met remotely to learn about and discuss EvergreenHealth’s behavioral health programs that support patients, staff, physicians and the community at large, during a time where access to behavioral health resources were more necessary than ever.

The Community Advisors are volunteers who offer insights and advice to the EvergreenHealth Board of Commissioners and Administration. All advisors are residents of the EvergreenHealth District, serve in three-year terms and demonstrate their dedication to community involvement, strong interpersonal skills and health care delivery.

Throughout the year, Community Advisors attend multiple educational sessions to learn about health care challenges currently facing the Eastside community and EvergreenHealth programs and services that can address those issues. Additionally, some advisors serve on EvergreenHealth’s Medical Center task forces. All community advisors represent EvergreenHealth outside of the health system to better serve the community.

EvergreenHealth Financial Stewardship In 2020, as EvergreenHealth responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization continued investing in several initiatives to expand and enhance patient care as part of its 10-year Master Facilities Plan. Many of the organization’s ongoing investments to upgrade the health system’s infrastructure and facilities, to meet the community’s needs, proved to be critical in light of the pandemic.

Message from the Board Chair and Vice President Dear friends, The year 2020 certainly turned out to be a year like most of us have never experienced. It was an extraordinary year of challenges, change and opportunities.

It is well known that for us at EvergreenHealth, the world forever changed on Feb. 28, 2020. It was shortly after that day the outpouring of community support began—driven by the need to support our health care heroes, our community and each other. The local Chinese-American community stepped forward with an abundance of personal protective equipment (PPE) donations and financial contributions to assist us in our fight against something we were struggling to understand, as the status of COVID-19 in our community changed by the day, and sometimes by the hour.

Within less than a month our team pivoted, and our 700 attendee in-person gala moved from our traditional tent to an amazing, online event that raised $1.2 million for much needed upgrades to our Intensive Care Unit (ICU). We give our thanks and gratitude to the many generous community donors who stepped forward and made sure that our new ICU will have all the upgrades needed to fight the next challenge and to care for our families and their loved ones every day.

As the year continued, the Foundation found ways to continue to support the new ICU, our beloved Hospice program, our cardio-vascular catheterization lab and other critical projects that support the great work of EvergreenHealth.

Thank you for your continued support in both the good and The Foundation staff quickly adapted to accepting PPE challenging times. We are excited about the many projects on donations, delivering food to sustain our staff during long our horizon in 2021 that we look forward to partnering with hours at work, lotion for the faces of our nurses and doctors our community on. We are all in this together! wearing PPE for hours at a time, scrubs to change into on the way home, even tennis shoes to support our staffs’ tired feet. It was amazing to watch and be a part of the enormous outpouring of strength and generosity from our community.

Message from the Board Chair & Director Dear neighbors, In 2020, our world like so many others, was completely changed after the first COVID-19 patient was identified in Washington state. What did not change, was our Foundation’s commitment to support EvergreenHealth Monroe’s mission to advance the health of the community it serves through our dedication to high-quality, safe, compassionate and costeffective health care.

experience featuring a robust silent auction, videos of EvergreenHealth Monroe’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and a strong peer-to-peer giving platform. Funds raised through the Gala were immediately invested in new CAPR respirators and converting patient rooms to negative airflow, which is needed to care for COVID-19 positive patients or anyone requiring isolation.

Beginning in March, our efforts turned to support our hospital’s most critical needs, ensuring EvergreenHealth Monroe had the supplies, equipment and personal protective equipment it needed to provide the level of care our community needed.

In 2021, our Foundation looks forward to continuing to partner with our community, family foundations and corporate sponsors to enhance the health care of our community. We thank everyone, including our Foundation’s Board of Trustees, who make investing in our local health care a priority by bringing real enhancements to EvergreenHealth Monroe.

Thanks to our incredibly generous community, our Foundation was able to provide tens of thousands of procedural and cloth masks, meals for dedicated staff, gowns and sanitizers our hospital needed to safely remain open for our East Snohomish residents.

According to Healthgrades’ 2021 Report to the Nation, EvergreenHealth is just one of two hospitals in Washington state to receive this recognition.

Healthgrades independently evaluated 4,500 hospitals across the country, analyzing a range of metrics and inpatient data to measure quality and safety across multiple specialty lines and areas. According to Healthgrades, from 2017 through 2019, if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award, such as EvergreenHealth, 177,026 lives could potentially have been saved.

Since 2014, EvergreenHealth has placed among Healthgrades’ top 250 hospitals each year for eight consecutive years, and it has placed among Healthgrades’ top 100 hospitals for five consecutive years, beginning in 2017.
