Message from the CEO Dear neighbors, On the evening of Feb. 28, 2020, Dr. Francis Riedo, medical director of infectious disease at EvergreenHealth, informed our chief medical officer, Dr. Ettore Palazzo, that two critically ill patients in our Critical Care Unit had tested positive for the novel coronavirus known as SARS-Cov-2. There had been one other case in Washington state until that point and we were hopeful there would be limited spread of the virus.

Our proximity to a skilled nursing facility in Kirkland, where an undiagnosed outbreak was occurring, led us to become the first hospital in the United States to respond to what would become an international pandemic. EvergreenHealth’s strong infrastructure of emergency preparedness, combined with our infectious disease specialists’ expertise in responding to Ebola and other pathogens, helped to prepare us for such an event. Our courageous staff immediately went about the work of donning personal protective equipment (PPE) while continuing to care for our patients. Since then, all of our lives have dramatically changed; social distancing, contact tracing, COVID testing, and flattening the curve have become part of our everyday language and experience.

I am extremely proud of and grateful for every EvergreenHealth physician, provider, staff member and volunteer who has demonstrated our core values of compassion, collaboration, accountability, respect and excellence throughout this challenging time. We are thankful for all of you who have shown us incredible support: from donating meals, equipment and supplies, and sharing your messages of encouragement and gratitude, to doing your part in staying home to flatten the curve—everyone in our community has contributed in so many ways. We are immeasurably grateful for you!

Community Annual Report. This issue demonstrates how working in partnership saves lives and helps those we serve to live their healthiest best. You will also find information regarding COVID-19; the new and ongoing safety processes ingrained across our system, and all the ways we continue to provide thoughtful care in an environment of absolute safety.

I’m particularly pleased that this issue takes an in-depth look at EvergreenHealth Medical Group (EHMG). EHMG is a physician-led, physician-designed group of more than 330 EvergreenHealth primary care physicians and specialists who collaborate to provide the highest quality of evidencebased care and services. Throughout EHMG, and the entire EvergreenHealth system, partnership and collaboration are simply part of the fabric—and I’m proud to be a member of the team.

Thank you to our staff, physicians, volunteers and partners who selflessly and courageously dedicate their days and nights to keeping our community healthy through these unprecedented times, and always. Supporting a Culture of Partnership From my very first visit to EvergreenHealth, I could tell it was a special place.

Of course, our physicians, medical professionals and staff are highly qualified and experienced. However, what makes EvergreenHealth different is how these exceptional people work together to form a truly collaborative team, which is often unique in today’s health care landscape.

By working together, we achieve more for our patients and community than any one person could achieve alone. Heightened collaboration among our physicians and care teams also means more synchronized care and a better experience for our patients.

This culture of teamwork is, in fact, a large part of what drew me to join EvergreenHealth last year. This spring, as our system and community faced the unprecedented impacts of COVID-19, the importance of teamwork became more apparent than ever. I could not have been more grateful to experience an unwavering foundation of collaboration here at EvergreenHealth.

Our physicians and staff came together with a clear understanding of our collective role which remains­—to care for one another, care for our patients and serve our community, together. But don’t just take my word for it.

Meet the Chief Medical Officer of EHMG EHMG Chief Medical Officer Dr. Aileen Mickey shares how the medical group collaborates to provide patient-centered care.

A childhood curiosity sparked by dissecting frogs with her older brother led Aileen Mickey, MD, FCCP, to pursue a career in medicine. Over the past three decades, she’s served patients as a pulmonary critical care physician, an administrator and now, as chief medical officer (CMO) of EvergreenHealth Medical Group (EHMG) and recipient of a Seattle Business 2020 Leaders in Healthcare Award. We sat down with Dr. Mickey to learn more about her background and what it means to be a part of EHMG.

Q: What drew you to pulmonary care?

A: I was passionate about caring for critically ill individuals

in the intensive care unit, but I also liked the idea of establishing long-term relationships with pulmonary patients in an outpatient clinical setting. Pursuing board certification in both areas gave me the option to have the best of both worlds.

Q: What inspired you to transition to a clinical leadership

role with EHMG?

A: It was a difficult decision to leave patient care, but I

realized that I could help even more patients as an EHMG leader. A key piece of my role is to work with other clinical leaders to remove obstacles for clinicians, so they can remain solely focused on delivering the best patient care.

EHMG was born from a group of physicians with a shared philosophy of providing collaborative, patient-centric care, and that culture endures today. We exist to identify care needs, meet those needs and serve our patients. It’s as simple as that.

Q: What does being an EHMG patient mean for

A: One of the distinguishing characteristics of EHMG is

Q: How would you describe your EHMG colleagues?

A: My colleagues are exceptional doctors and providers,

and they’re also good people. Many of us live here on the Eastside, so we truly care about the health and wellness of our community—it’s our home, too. We do the right thing for patients every day and hold each other to the highest level of accountability, which is part of what makes me so proud to be a part of EHMG.

Q: Are there any patients that particularly stand out in

your memory?

A: Of course, and there are many. One man I treated

early on in my practice was terribly sick with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). I was concerned he wouldn’t make it through the night in intensive care, but miraculously, he survived. Over the next nine years, I remained his pulmonary care physician while he received outpatient rehabilitation. He and his wife gifted me a clock engraved with, “Thank you for your time and dedication.” I was so touched by their thoughtfulness— and have the clock on my wall to this day. Whenever I check the time in my office, I think of them.

EvergreenHealth Opens First Perinatal Mood Disorder Clinic on the Eastside New practice offers mental health care and service for mothers.

For many women, the experience of becoming a mother is one of the most joyful and significant milestones in their lives— and, at the same time, it also can be incredibly overwhelming, isolating and anxiety-inducing. EvergreenHealth’s Perinatal Mood Disorder Program, located on the Kirkland campus, opened its doors in February 2020 to help mothers from pregnancy through the first year after giving birth, who may be struggling with various mood disorders that so commonly affect countless women every year.

The clinic’s team of expert providers specialize in helping women recognize that the mental health changes and emotions they’re experiencing are often treatable medical conditions associated with Postpartum Depression (PPD) or other anxiety- and stress-related disorders that occur during pregnancy or after childbirth.

Patricia Morgan, DNP, ARNP, the clinic’s lead provider, explained, “Having a baby flips your world upside down.

Not only are you expected to maintain your day-to-day responsibilities, but now you have an infant who requires your constant care and attention. Adding a severe lack of sleep and

fluctuating hormones on top of all that stress can cause your brain chemistry to shift, resulting in a perinatal mood disorder that requires medical care.”

When patients are referred to the program, they meet with a provider to develop a personalized care plan which may incorporate individual therapy, group therapy, medication or a combination of the three. Throughout, the clinic team collaborates with patients’ EHMG primary care and OB care teams to ensure seamless, comprehensive and compassionate care.

“As a psychiatric nurse, I would often care for new mothers in various stages of crisis, which motivated me to specialize in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

Reclaiming their mental health not only helps mothers to live their healthiest, but also supports the well-being of their families,” said Morgan.

What’s the Difference Between “Baby Blues” and a Postpartum Mood Disorder?

Baby Blues affects four out of five individuals. It generally peaks within the first few days post-delivery and resolves without treatment within two weeks.

One out of every five to seven individuals experience postpartum mood disorders that require treatment. Mood disorders can occur during pregnancy or up to 12 months following childbirth, and symptoms last beyond two weeks.

Access to State-of-the-Art Technology When Every Moment Counts EvergreenHealth Neurosurgery provides life-saving care for stroke patients.

As 80-year-old retired teacher and missionary Bill Jones was enjoying a crisp September evening barbecuing in his Bothell backyard, his wife, Kathy, stepped outside to find him with an arm hanging over the fire, unable to speak. She quickly dialed 911.

Upon Jones’ arrival to the EvergreenHealth Emergency Department, Dr. Terry Mengert, emergency medicine physician, and neurohospitalist Dr. Sheila Smith ordered a CT scan, which showed a blood clot in his major cerebral artery, causing a stroke. They quickly administered a dose of the clot-busting drug, tPA, to restore blood flow and oxygen to his brain before rushing him into the biplane imaging suite for surgery.

Over the next three days, Jones was continually monitored in the Critical Care Unit by a physical therapist, occupational therapist and rehabilitation specialist to assess his care needs and recovery.

“Within two days, Bill was able to walk without a walker and eating normally,” Kathy explained. “We were even playing cribbage in the CCU!”

There, Dr. Dustin Hayward, neurosurgeon with EvergreenHealth Neurosurgery, conducted a minimally invasive thrombectomy using biplane imaging technology, which provides a 3D road map of every blood vessel in the brain. He inserted a catheter into Jones’ leg, weaving it all the way up to his brain to remove the clot.

“Having this technology onsite is critical in situations like Bill’s, when every second counts,” Dr. Hayward explained.

Miraculously, Jones experienced no lasting brain damage, despite suffering a severe stroke. Without the immediate intervention he received, Dr. Hayward predicts that Jones would have lost the ability to use and understand language, and to move the right side of his body.

“Bill’s success story is thanks to a lot of people moving very quickly,” Dr. Hayward said. “By acting fast and collaborating with the right specialists, we can save more of the brain.”

Today, Jones is back to enjoying backyard barbecues—when the Pacific Northwest weather permits, of course.

EvergreenHealth Patient Joins Global Fight Against Parkinson’s Disease Cutting-edge clinical trials offer innovative treatments.

“If the trial is successful, this medication may slow the progression of Parkinson’s Disease.”

EvergreenHealth Research Services offers clinical trials to evaluate treatments for a range of conditions, from lung cancer to pain management. It is also part of Parkinson Study Group (PSG)—one of the largest scientific networks of Parkinson’s centers in North America. Dr. Agarwal’s team is currently recruiting for more than 15 clinical trials.

Dahl’s care is now completely coordinated through EvergreenHealth—his neurologist, physical therapy and research trial team is all under one roof.

Five years ago, James Dahl noticed it was harder than it used to be to whisk eggs and to throw a softball. He later spoke with his local doctor in Bellingham, who referred him to a neurologist in Seattle.

“When the neurologist mentioned Parkinson’s, I was shocked,” Dahl explained.

He was 52 years old at the time; most patients with Parkinson’s are diagnosed in their 60s. “He recommended I join a trial at EvergreenHealth.

I saw someone there the same day.”

Dahl was accepted into a four-year clinical trial run by Pinky Agarwal, MD, FAAN, at EvergreenHealth’s Booth Gardner Parkinson’s Care Center.

“James is contributing to cutting-edge research because this medication attempts to attack the abnormal protein in the brain that causes Parkinson’s, bind it and remove it,” Dr. Agarwal explained.

“The entire team is world-class,” Dahl said. “They take what could be an anxious situation and turn it into a relatively pleasant experience. I would recommend EvergreenHealth to anyone.”

Dahl is now an advocate for clinical trials. He explained, “I joined the trial because I’m not going to let Parkinson’s define or control me. I’m going to control it. This is my small contribution to the future, and I’d strongly encourage others to consider joining trials. Without research, nothing would get better.”

In response to COVID-19, the EvergreenHealth Research Department expedited onboarding for seven COVID-19 clinical trials— accomplishing weeks of work within days to contribute to new scientific advances. EvergreenHealth was the first hospital on the West Coast, and the second site globally, to participate in the promising adaptive COVID-19 treatment trial for Remdesivir—supporting the country’s efforts in finding treatment for the novel coronavirus.

Fighting Breast Cancer Across Three Generations at Once EvergreenHealth Cancer Care offers compassionate care and navigation.

At 59 years old, Kim Lynch had always been diligent about receiving her annual mammogram and conducting monthly breast self-exams. But last year, she was particularly cautious after her 34-year-old daughter-in-law was diagnosed with triple negative invasive breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy.

Then, in April 2019, Lynch felt a lump and scheduled a mammogram at EvergreenHealth; at the same time, her 89year old mother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of inflammatory breast cancer.

Dr. Marion Johnson, breast surgeon with EvergreenHealth Surgery Care, explained, “About 10% of the time, needle biopsies of these kinds of abnormalities result in a false negative. We wanted to be extra thorough, so I conducted a more comprehensive surgical biopsy. This procedure unfortunately confirmed that Kim did have breast cancer.”

And that is how Lynch found herself in the almost unfathomable situation of becoming the third woman in her immediate family diagnosed with breast cancer that year.

Tragically, Lynch’s mother passed away from her own breast cancer just a week later.

“I’ve referred to this time as ‘emotionally challenging,’ but that doesn’t begin to cover it,” Lynch explained.

Living in Sammamish, she squeezed in her own treatment between caring for her mother in Spokane and looking after her daughter-in-law and two-year-old grandson in Everett.

After Lynch’s 3D mammogram and ultrasound, she received a needle biopsy to evaluate a small mass in her breast. The initial results indicated that the tissue showed some atypical cells. This biopsy was benign; however, she still required a surgical biopsy to remove the lump and surrounding tissue, and to confirm it was not cancerous.

“The silver lining was that Kim had stage zero or non-invasive cancer,” said Dr. Johnson. “The cure rate is about 99%, as the cancerous cells are limited to the milk duct, making it relatively straightforward to treat.”

EvergreenHealth’s Oncology Nurse Navigators aimed to make this difficult time easier for Lynch by partnering with her to provide information and coordinate her care around her schedule.

“The Nurse Navigators were exceptional,” Lynch said. “They were so understanding and flexible. They answered most of my questions before I could even ask.”

Dr. Johnson performed a lumpectomy in June to remove the remaining cancerous tissue. Then in September, Lynch underwent 21 days of radiation therapy. “I called it my glow therapy,” she said. “It was so peaceful. The radiation therapists were wonderful—I kind of miss them!”

“Our system is really integrated,” observed Dr. Johnson. “We may be in different offices, but we act as one team that includes: radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, surgeons, nurses, medical assistants and primary care doctors. It’s important to say that our team includes our patients, too—they are very involved in their care.”

What Are Oncology Nurse Navigators?

EvergreenHealth Oncology Nurse Navigators understand the weight of receiving a cancer diagnosis. They partner with patients and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance at EvergreenHealth Halvorson Cancer Center throughout their cancer care journeys to support a seamlessly coordinated and comfortable experience by: > Serving as a guide, advocate and resource for help and information > Facilitating appointments, including laboratory and diagnostic tests and specialty care > Offering education about the diagnosis, treatment options and the resources available

A year later, both Lynch and her daughter-in-law are now cancer-free and staunch advocates of self-exams and mammograms.

“It probably makes some women uncomfortable, but I ask everyone: Have you had your mammogram? Have you done your monthly self-exam? Do it the first of every month so it’s easy to remember,” Lynch said.

Despite this incredibly stressful time for her family, Lynch did not worry about her medical care. “I never had any anxiety about the care at all,” Lynch explained. “I didn’t feel like I needed to shop around.”

Navigating the Road to a Pain-Free Retirement A total knee replacement offers relief for one patient’s chronic pain.

Woodinville resident Aleda Enright was looking forward to enjoying retirement after she and her husband downsized their home to focus on travel. There was just one problem: Enright felt pain every time she took a step. So, she was referred to Dr. Adam Rothenberg, an orthopedic surgeon at EvergreenHealth Orthopedic & Sports Care.

From the moment she stepped foot into EvergreenHealth Orthopedic & Sports Care, every encounter exceeded Enright’s expectations.

Enright had been suffering from chronic pain and limited mobility due to complications following a prior knee surgery that caused her left knee to turn outward, for which Dr. Rothenberg recommended a total knee replacement (TKA) revision procedure.

“The best approach for Aleda was to completely replace her previous implant with one better aligned to her anatomy,” explained Dr. Rothenberg.

Before Enright could go into surgery, however, Dr. Rothenberg recommended a comprehensive exam.

“Aleda’s initial pre-op testing showed her blood sugar levels were too high for a safe surgery,” said Dr. Rothenberg. “So, I partnered with Dr. Wang at EvergreenHealth Primary Care to monitor her blood sugar. When it came down, I gave her the green light.”

Enright was walking around within a few weeks after the procedure, with the support of EvergreenHealth Home Health.

Today, she continues to make strides in her recovery with outpatient physical therapy.

“The entire care team was excellent—from the medical assistants at the first consultation, all the way to my home health rehabilitation and physical therapy. It felt seamless.”

Enright and her husband are now back to making travel plans—eventually including a vacation celebrating their 50th anniversary, where she looks forward to taking many pain-free steps.

Waking Up to an Invisible Illness EvergreenHealth Primary Care cracks the code in a lifelong quest for answers.

Amy St. Pierre knew it wasn’t normal to fall asleep during the latest action movie or rely on daily naps to function. But after nearly 30 years of battling overwhelming fatigue, now paired with the demands of raising two small children, she didn’t know where to turn for help.

“Doctors always told me to improve my diet and exercise habits,” explained St. Pierre. “My blood work came back normal, so they said there was nothing wrong with me. It was frustrating and I felt like nobody was listening.”

Compounding her fatigue, St. Pierre struggled with anxiety and depression. When she was referred to Dr. Debra Chaput at EvergreenHealth Primary Care, Lakeshore Totem Lake in 2013, she decided to make the hour-and-a-half trip from her home in Maple Valley as a last resort.

“When we met, Dr. Chaput took the time to get to know me—not once did I feel rushed or dismissed,” recalled St. Pierre.

“It was incredibly validating to finally have an advocate and a partner in my search for answers.”

The pair first worked together to develop a treatment plan for St. Pierre’s anxiety. Dr. Chaput also recommended St. Pierre to a nearby sleep clinic for testing. The diagnosis confirmed St. Pierre’s suspicions; she had narcolepsy, a chronic disorder characterized by overwhelming drowsiness and a disrupted sleep cycle.

“I’ve learned how critical it is to listen—not only to my patients, but to my own inner voice as well,” said Dr. Chaput.

“I knew in my gut that something wasn’t right with Amy, and I was determined to help her figure out what was affecting her health.”

Today, Dr. Chaput regularly collaborates with St. Pierre’s entire interdisciplinary care team to manage her treatments for narcolepsy and anxiety.

To our wonderful community, When COVID-19 arrived at our doors, EvergreenHealth was at the forefront of care. As we’ve carried out a comprehensive emergency plan to care for our patients and families during this pandemic, we’ve been met with a return of kindness and generosity from our community.

Many of you supported our COVID-19 Critical Needs Fund —established to purchase critical medical equipment and supplies as well as provide support for our physicians, nurses and staff. Thousands of individuals, community groups and businesses donated personal protective equipment (PPE),

Brooks shoes, Figs scrubs, iPads, hand-sewn masks and two Clorox Healthcare® Optimum-UV™ Enlight Systems. We received more than 25,000 meals to nourish our staff, boxes of snacks and treats, and countless cards written from the heart.

2020 Evergreen Gala Goes Virtual and Raises $1.26M for New Critical Care Unit The EvergreenHealth annual gala looked a little different this year. Saturday, April 25th, 2020, was supposed to be an evening of glitz and glam as we “Roared into the 20s” with our generous supporters, friends and colleagues under the big tent at King County’s Marymoor Park. However, due to COVID-19, the EvergreenHealth Foundation had to pivot quickly and transform our annual gala into a virtual format, as our main priority was continuing to keep our supporters, donors, patients and community safe. While we weren’t able to gather in person, EvergreenHealth still felt the love from our community and presenting sponsor Denali Advanced Integration. The virtual gala launched on Monday, April 20 and quickly garnered the support of the community. Within two weeks, the fundraising goal had not only been met, but was exceeded—raising $1.26 million!

Volunteering to Make a Difference EvergreenHealth Community Advisors Among the hundreds of volunteers who dedicate time and resources to advancing EvergreenHealth’s mission are a group of specially appointed community members who serve as liaisons between the health system and the community we serve.

EvergreenHealth Community Advisors are residents of the public hospital district who serve three-year terms as volunteers. The Community Advisors’ role is to learn about EvergreenHealth programs and services that address the community’s health needs, act as advocates on behalf of the community regarding important health care issues, and be a liaison for the hospital within the community.

Despite Our “New Normal” the Important Things Never Change As the medical director of infectious disease at EvergreenHealth and a former Epidemic Intelligence Service evolving circumstances and preparing for the unexpected is ingrained in my DNA. At EvergreenHealth, we’ve been continually committed to emergency preparedness since 2002, when we designed our Silver Tower and the Emergency Department to accommodate remain poised and ready to safely care for patients and our community in every possible circumstance. He began his career at EvergreenHealth as an anesthesiologist in 1990, was later named medical director for the Evergreen Surgical Center, and joined the executive team as senior vice president and chief medical and quality officer in 2010.

As chief operating officer, Chris Bredeson oversees all facets of health care services and operations for EvergreenHealth Medical Group, and strategic planning for the EvergreenHealth system. Bredeson has served in leadership positions since 1994, and before joining EvergreenHealth in December 2019, was president and COO of MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup.

Mary Shepler joined as EvergreenHealth’s chief nursing officer, responsible for overseeing inpatient nursing areas, emergency services and overall nursing practice for the entire EvergreenHealth system. Before coming to EvergreenHealth, she served for nine years as vice president of patient care services/chief nursing officer for SCL Health–St. Joseph Hospital in Denver.

Comprehensive Weight Loss & Management Practice EvergreenHealth opened its new weight loss and bariatric surgery practice, EvergreenHealth Weight Loss & Bariatric Care, which offers treatment and services for adult patients living with a range of health and wellness needs. Each weight loss pathway is designed to meet patients where they are on their journeys to better health, and accommodates individuals with complex health needs and chronic conditions.

Expanded Access to Care Patients and families seeking vascular care in Snohomish County can now be treated at EvergreenHealth Monroe Vascular Care, a new clinic led by EvergreenHealth Vascular Care physician Dr. Amy Coulter. The expansion of vascular care in Monroe provides a convenient alternative to traveling to Kirkland, and enables EvergreenHealth Monroe to better meet the needs of patients across the Sky Valley region.

Community Benefit Spotlight Stewards of Your Levy Funds As a public hospital district, EvergreenHealth provides a special benefit to the greater community. Every year, we are entrusted as the stewards of your resources, to use tax levy funds to meet community health needs.

In 2019, more than $5.4 million in levy funds supported a range of programs designed to provide quality health care, services and resources—often at no charge to the community ­—to meet patients’ and families’ wellness needs.

Offering On-Call Nurse Triage Care and Services 24/7 Nurse Navigator & Healthline EvergreenHealth’s 24/7 Nurse Navigator & Healthline provides a levy-funded free resource for all community members, offering on-call nurse triage care, scheduling and referrals to primary and specialty care, and registration for health education programs and services.

In 2019, Healthline served tens of thousands of callers in the following ways:

Increasing Access to Quality Health Care and Social Services Community Healthcare Access Team (CHAT) EvergreenHealth’s Community Healthcare Access Team (CHAT) is a levy-funded program that is focused on reducing the barriers to accessing and navigating affordable and quality health care and social services. Through partnerships with a range of community organizations, CHAT serves residents across the region by connecting low-income, underinsured and uninsured residents to resources for insurance, financial assistance, behavioral and community health services, educational information and other forms of assistance.

As part of its mission, CHAT and its team of specially trained staff members and social workers serve as a bridge between EvergreenHealth and community health and social services.

They are experts in Medicare and Medicaid eligibility, and CHAT staff are certified navigators for the Washington Healthplanfinder exchange. Each year, the team helps hundreds of community members find the appropriate plan and obtain health insurance.

Beyond their work within the EvergreenHealth system, CHAT partners with community agencies—such as Project Access NW, Hopelink and more—to help educate residents in accessing appropriate health care services.

Navigating the Journey of a Serious Illness EvergreenHealth Palliative Care Many providers describe EvergreenHealth’s levy-funded palliative care program as a much-needed rest stop along the journey of living with a serious medical condition. It’s a chance for patients and families to pause and work with a palliative care physician to assess a range of symptoms and make sure they are being managed as well as possible.

In 2019, EvergreenHealth Palliative Care program leaders, including Cynthia Tomik, LICSW, who manages the department, and Dr. Hope Wechkin, medical director of EvergreenHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, were appointed to lend their expertise to inform decision-making and establish care standards for palliative care programs across Washington state.

Their contributions to the Dr. Robert Bree Collaborative, and to the Washington State Hospice and Palliative Care Organization board of directors, are focused on creating a road map and resources based largely on EvergreenHealth’s approach, to help providers, patients and families navigate palliative care in the most compassionate and effective ways.

Supporting Compassionate End-of-Life Care EvergreenHealth Hospice Care

Serving the Community with Comprehensive Geriatric Care EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care compassionately serves patients 65 years and older who have complex medical needs by partnering with them, their families, and care coordinators to reach higher function, greater independence, and enhanced quality of life.

In 2019, EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care’s multidisciplinary team of specialists—including physicians, nurses, social workers and pharmacists— grew to include Dr. Reza Ghomi, who specializes in working with older adults who are more vulnerable to depression as they age.

Together, the practice’s board-certified physicians and providers collaborate to offer some of the region’s most comprehensive care for seniors, evaluating each patient’s health status, including functional and cognitive ability, emotional health, and support needs.

In 2019, EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care served 6,301 patients, including 5,863 existing patients and 438 new patients.

In 2019, EvergreenHealth Hospice Care continued serving families across King and Snohomish counties with the high-quality endof-life care for which the nearly 30-year-old program is well-known.

Community Benefit Spotlight Promoting Mental Health Resources for Young Adults EvergreenHealth Youth Mental Health Program EvergreenHealth is committed to empowering the community to take action in promoting awareness of the mental health challenges facing young adults.

Through its levy-funded Youth Mental Health Program, EvergreenHealth partners with groups and organizations across the community to offer trainings, resources and grassroots solutions for pressing mental health issues.

In 2019, the health system continued offering its wellattended youth mental health first-aid trainings, where participants learn how to identify and support teens in crisis.

Levy dollars also made it possible for EvergreenHealth to provide funding for a part-time mental health counselor in the Northshore School District, and the health system was able to invest in programs facilitated by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to increase awareness of mental health and to dispel the stigma often associated with it.

Sustaining STEM Education Partnering With Local Schools With help from the community’s levy dollars, EvergreenHealth partners with local school districts to provide middle school and high school students with information and education related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

In 2019, EvergreenHealth reached hundreds of students in Lake Washington, Northshore and Riverview School Districts through a range of programs, including its sevenyear partnership with Juanita High School’s Global Health STEM program, as well as local STEM education fairs for fifththrough eighth-grade students, and through other hands-on educational opportunities.

The goal of the program is to provide students insight into health care careers by offering opportunities to job shadow EvergreenHealth providers, attend the hospital’s Grand Rounds, learn from EvergreenHealth guest speakers and access resources for presenting information on important global health topics to their fellow peers.

Providing Perinatal and Postpartum Support EvergreenHealth Childbirth and Early Parenting Education EvergreenHealth Childbirth and Early Parenting Classes provide a continuum of support for new families. The spectrum of offerings start with classes for families who are pondering parenthood, continue with childbirth and pregnancy “Delivery Day” classes and move straight through the toddler years. In addition, since 1991, EvergreenHealth has served new parents and their little ones with education and resources through its Parent-Baby program. What began as a meeting for six new mothers has since grown to include 12 different groups for parents and babies from birth to 15 months, with support for parents suffering from perinatal mood disorders.

All programs are designed to cater to participants from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and to foster a sense of community and camaraderie for new parents. Class facilitators collaborate closely with EvergreenHealth’s Family Maternity Center and Postpartum Care Center to ensure families receive comprehensive resources and support in every moment.

Serving Seniors Across the Region Partnering with Northshore Senior Center EvergreenHealth has long served as a partner to Northshore Senior Center (NSC), a Bothell-based nonprofit organization offering vital programs, services and resources to older adults in the community. NSC’s Enhanced Wellness program, made possible by EvergreenHealth levy funds, is an evidence-based program designed to decrease the length of participants’ hospital stays, lower their psychoactive drugs, alleviate symptoms of mood disorders and encourage older adults to maintain control of their lives through a participant-centered approach. Additionally, the levy-funded Adult Day Health Program provides occupational therapy for functionally impaired disabled adults, offering support to both seniors and their caregivers.

Among several accomplishments in 2019, Northshore Senior Center and Northshore Adult Day Health Center: Served 3,586 individuals at NSC, more than a 50% increase from 2018.

Provided 2,322 one-on-one consultations for social services and health and wellness participants.

Expanded its diabetes support program with support from EvergreenHealth.

In 2019, EvergreenHealth’s Childbirth and Early Parenting Education program offered 1,069 programs to 9,797 participants, resulting in 19,544 encounters with parents and families.

Offered more than 10 educational programs in partnership with Peter Kirk Community Center.

Saw improvements in physical and cognitive functioning in more than 90% of individuals who received program interventions through the Adult Day Health Program, such as occupational therapy and rehabilitation services.

EvergreenHealth Financial Stewardship In 2019, EvergreenHealth continued investing in several initiatives to expand and enhance patient care as part of its 10-year Master Facilities Plan to upgrade the health system’s infrastructure and facilities, to meet the community’s needs as they grow and evolve.

The organization realized a net income of $27.1 million in 2019, while investing $27 million in community benefit services including charity care and subsidized health services, and it contributed $27.9 million toward significant capital improvement projects across the EvergreenHealth system.

Message from the Board Chair and Vice President Dear Friends, Thank you for another year of incredible support. Our community and you, our generous partners, continually inspire us. Your commitment and investment in the EvergreenHealth Foundation allows us to assist the organization with much-needed financial support for innovative programs and grateful patient projects.

Our investments in 2019 have advanced patient safety and expanded the care we provide to every life we touch. With our community’s continued growth comes the need for sustained support of the programs and services that EvergreenHealth provides to our patients and community.

2020 started as usual and then took a real turn in March, as EvergreenHealth and EvergreenHealth Foundation were put at the forefront of the COVID-19 crisis. We are very proud of the response by all clinicians and hospital staff, who responded to the outbreak in our community with swiftness and with the highest level of safety and quality. We are also proud of our community members, as well, who rose to the challenge to care for our front line staff and clinicians. Donating PPE, nourishing the staff with meals, bringing hand lotion and socks, delivering Girl Scout Cookies, and sending wonderful heartfelt notes of gratitude and encouragement had a profound impact. EvergreenHealth and EvergreenHealth Foundation greatly appreciated these selfless efforts. Thank you for your continued support in both the good times and the challenging times.

Along with our philanthropic partners, EvergreenHealth Monroe Foundation made significant investments in the infrastructure and equipment our dedicated team of caregivers use every day.

At the beginning of 2019, EvergreenHealth Monroe opened a new Cancer Care Center in collaboration with physicians at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Having a Cancer Center right here in Monroe means patients no longer need to drive long distances to receive high-quality and state-of-the-art cancer treatments. This is a massive win for our community!

One of the projects we are most proud of is the redesign and renovation of the Healing Garden located at the center of the hospital, outside of our patient rooms. This project was completed with funds raised by the Foundation and a group of dedicated master gardeners. They volunteered their time to make the garden a calm and tranquil environment to be enjoyed by staff and patients.

Our signature Blue Jeans and Boots Gala was a roaring success and raised $193,000 to invest in critical equipment nurses use every day to care for patients. Some of the equipment included lifesaving AED and LifePak devices used when a patient is in cardiac arrest and new IV pumps with updated medication libraries.
