This issue offers us the chance to share the stories of several inspiring individuals in our community and to celebrate the power of relationships between EvergreenHealth providers and these exceptional patients.

In the following pages, you’ll see how shared experiences between physicians, patients and families can leave lasting, meaningful impressions and enhanced experiences. It’s something we like to call “Well. Done Together.”

As stewards of our community’s health and well-being, we look forward to this annual chance to highlight accomplishments across our health system and the many ways we dedicate ourselves to being your best partner in health.

As we celebrate 45 years of service to our community, we think they would be pleased with the ways we’ve grown since our founding. From our newest urgent care location in Mill Creek, two new patient care floors in our Silver tower in Kirkland, to a new Neuroscience, Spine and Orthopedic Institute

spanning four floors in our DeYoung Pavilion, we are improving access alongside the rapid growth in our region.

Going the Extra Mile A leading EvergreenHealth surgeon helps one woman overcome breast cancer through a shared marathon mentality.

Carla Stewart was in the best shape of her life when a routine screening mammogram revealed a suspicious lump. Despite the chance of a cancer, one of her first concerns was for the upcoming New York City Marathon she’d been planning to run for more than a year.

The 53-year-old Monroe resident was in the midst of completing one marathon per month as a way to stay active with her husband; the NYC Marathon was her 17th.

A cancer diagnosis presented a hurdle she hadn’t planned on.

“It was hard to believe I had cancer; I really felt good,” Stewart explained.

Stewart’s oncologist immediately referred her to Dr. Marion Johnson, a surgeon specializing in breast surgery at EvergreenHealth, to complete several biopsies and MRI screenings before scheduling a lumpectomy to remove the cancer.

Upon their first meeting, Stewart quickly found comfort in another of Dr. Johnson’s strengths— their shared love for running.

“After meeting Carla, I understood how important it was for her to accomplish the race and we were able to work together to schedule her procedures around her New York trip,” Dr. Johnson explained.

Stewart underwent two biopsies and then traveled to New York to complete the marathon, ready to dive into treatment upon her return.

She credits her training mentality for helping her endure the weeks of chemotherapy and radiation that followed her lumpectomy surgery.

“When you're running a marathon, you think about the mile you're in, rather than the whole 26,” Stewart explained.

“That ability to push through when I'm tired helped me focus on persevering through a tough hour or tough day when I was going through treatment.”

As a surgeon with more than 20 years’ experience specializing in breast cancer surgery, Dr. Marion Johnson draws inspiration from her colleagues’ commitment to excellence—and more importantly, her patients who face cancer with grace despite the gravity of the diagnosis.

In her spare time, she is an avid runner, having completed a half-dozen marathons—including the prestigious Boston Marathon—and has her sights set on long-distance trail running.

Today, Stewart is living cancer-free. With her doctors’ OK, she aims to take on her next marathon in September, and she looks forward to crossing many more finish lines.

“It was clear Carla and I shared a passion for running, which made for an immediate connection.

A Song for Patti How palliative care helped one family find harmony in a loved one's illness.

For Patti Means and her family, the practice of palliative care offered much-needed respite as she managed a terminal diagnosis. But it was an unspoken bond with Patti’s palliative care provider, EvergreenHealth’s Dr. Hope Wechkin, that made a lasting impact transcending her medical care.

“Hope was the conductor of our orchestra,” explained Maureen Hoffmann, Patti’s sister.

As an accomplished pianist, Patti used her passion for music to bring people joy and possessed a rare ability to make others shine as she performed alongside them. She immediately identified a kindred spirit in Dr. Wechkin, a fellow performer and classically trained composer, violinist and singer.

When Patti began to feel increasingly overwhelmed by the complexities of managing her illness, Dr. Wechkin was there to listen and tune in to her needs, offering emotional support while also coordinating the health system resources that would help Patti live more comfortably­— much like the conductor of a symphony orchestra.

“I am always listening for the through line­—what is the patient’s melody and what harmonies can we bring in to best support him or her?”

Dr. Wechkin described.

“Hope helped Patti play her own song,” Patti's husband Bruce remembered.

"She tuned the medicine to the music in Patti's heart, and it was beautiful.”

Dr. Wechkin’s advocacy came at a critical time for Patti.

As a provider, she helped to address Patti’s immediate symptoms, and their friendship allowed for an honest dialogue on Patti’s feelings about her prognosis.

Patti passed away on October 8, 2016, but her legacy lives on through her music and a newly dedicated piano in her memory at Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett.

What is palliative care?

Dr. Hope Wechkin, medical director of EvergreenHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, describes the practice of palliative care like a train station along the route of a long medical journey.

“Receiving a serious medical diagnosis can feel like you’re on a train that’s picking up steam, with no way off,” Dr. Wechkin explained.

“The practice of palliative care gives us the chance to stop and take inventory of where we are, to look at the map and make sure we’re on the right path together.”

It’s a description that helps many patients better understand palliative care and how its focus on symptom management and aligning care with a patient’s goals and values can help them cope with a serious illness.

The most distinguishing aspect of palliative care, according to Dr. Wechkin, is its ability to be customized to each individual’s needs.

If you ask James Walsh about keeping a positive attitude when the chips are down, he’ll tell you it’s just a skill you’re raised with. And then he’ll tell you a joke.

The 73-year-old contractor scoffs at the notion that his all-in approach to living with a rare brain tumor resembles anything close to inspiring, but then again, “Being born is a terminal condition,” he adds with a glint in his eye.

Maintaining a healthy sense of humor comes second nature to Walsh, who lives in Bothell with his wife Joan. It’s a quality that endeared him to her during their courtship, and it’s evident in another of his close relationships — one he shares with his long-time primary care provider, EvergreenHealth’s Dr. Theresa Platz.

“This is all part of my journey. I may look old, but I still have a lot of life left in me,” Walsh declared.

“James has been a real inspiration to my own journey," Dr. Platz said. "Our relationship has always been built on honesty and it's refreshing to have conversations where no topics are off limits when it comes to how we're feeling about our health and longevity.”

The two hit it off when Walsh arrived as a walk-in patient at Dr. Platz’s Bothell practice nearly 20 years ago, but their bond deepened further in 2015 when Dr. Platz received a daunting diagnosis of her own—Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Much like Walsh, Dr. Platz dived into her treatment, conferring with colleagues and exploring the pathways that would lead to the best outcomes. As part of her therapeutic process, she also made time to visit with Walsh on a regular basis. Living just a few blocks away, Dr. Platz often stops in to say hello as she passes by his house while out for a run.

Dr. Platz is now living cancer-free, and Walsh is participating in a promising clinical trial to manage his tumor—and they continue to find time to talk about life often.

Beating the Stigma of Hepatitis C Embracing treatment with openness and acceptance helps patients live fully.

For some patients, the social perception of being diagnosed with hepatitis C can be more damaging than the virus itself.

This is why EvergreenHealth Infectious Disease and Travel Medicine provider Dr. Diego Lopez de Castilla emphasizes openness and acceptance in his approach to treating patients from all backgrounds who might live with hepatitis C. “As health care providers, we need to work toward eliminating the stigma surrounding hepatitis C,” said Dr. Lopez de Castilla. “It’s not always regular drug users that become infected—patients may contract it from a contaminated tattoo needle, or even by experimenting with drugs just once 20 years ago.”

“The most important thing is that we educate patients on how to prevent infection, and give them the best treatment available if they do become infected,” said Dr. Lopez de Castilla.

Hepatitis C—an infection caused by a virus that attacks and inflames the liver, spread by an infected person’s blood—is not always easily detected, which can lead to dangerous health concerns if left untreated. Recent national efforts have encouraged people born between 1945 and 1965 to get tested for hepatitis C, as people born during this time are five times more likely than other adults to be infected with the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Meet Diego Lopez de Castilla, MD Beyond his passion for medicine, Dr. Lopez de Castilla also brings a love for the outdoors and enjoys being active. Born and raised in Peru, he learned to scuba dive at a young age and in 2009 received his master scuba certification.

His quest for the best diving spots has taken him around the world to places like Indonesia, Thailand, The Bahamas, Montenegro and across the Caribbean Islands.

“When you’re underwater, it truly feels like you’re floating, like there’s no gravity at all,” he says. “You can feel the rhythm of the current, observe the sea life surrounding you, and it really helps you to become aware of yourself in that moment. There’s nothing else like it.”

• Current or former injection drug users • Those living with HIV/AIDS • Individuals who have had abnormal liver tests or liver disease • Anyone who received donated blood or organs before 1992 • Hemodialysis patients • Patients born between 1945 and 1965

This year’s luncheon keynote speaker is Trudy James, MRE—chaplain and film producer of Speaking of Dying: Living Deeply … Dying Well. James is a seminary graduate and retired hospital chaplain who learned hands-on lessons about death, dying and grief in the early days of the AIDS epidemic in the South.

Her groundbreaking work with AIDS was honored in the Clinton White House. Later, she created an AIDS Care Team program in Seattle and served as a chaplain at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Trudy will present ‘Listening to Our Losses,’ stories and examples to stress the importance of admitting that we all experience loss, and how to better listen to ourselves and each other during a time of grief and sadness.

Families Support Hospice Upgrades Last year, EvergreenHealth’s freestanding Gene & Irene Wockner Hospice Care Center celebrated 25 years of service to our community. To mark this milestone, the EvergreenHealth Foundation partnered with grateful families to successfully raise over $340,000 to provide critical funding for facility improvements.

The 25-year-old beautiful Cape Cod-style facility was designed to be as home-like as possible, consistent with safety, security and excellent medical care. With gifts large and small, many families supported the center and its employees, making several important renovations possible, including the construction of a new playground for young visitors.

Evergreen Gala Raises $1.35 Million The 2017 Evergreen Gala raised a record-setting $1.35 million to support a new EvergreenHealth Transitional Care Unit for Behavioral Health patients.

On April 29, more than 700 physicians, community leaders and friends of EvergreenHealth gathered in a signature tent in a new location at the Lake Washington Institute of Technology, and generously helped achieve a new record for our Fund-A-Need paddle-raise, surpassing $525,000.

Gala Fund-A-Need proceeds will fund a new 14-bed unit planned for EvergreenHealth’s Kirkland campus designed to serve the unique needs of patients who have behavioral health concerns and are receiving care at EvergreenHealth. Caring for behavioral health patients often presents distinct challenges from a safety, security and care-management perspective, and the new unit will consider these special circumstances to ensure patients, families and staff work effectively together as patients await transition to their appropriate setting.

News from the Emergency Department EvergreenHealth Monroe continues to enhance features within its emergency department (ED) to provide patients with the highest quality and most efficient care. Some recent enhancements include: Board-Certified Emergency Care Doctors The board-certified physicians at EvergreenHealth Monroe’s emergency department are the same doctors who treat patients at EvergreenHealth’s Kirkland and Redmond ED locations.

Advanced Stroke Evaluation and Telestroke Care Providers perform evaluations of potential stroke patients within 20 minutes of arrival, offering one of the most rapid evaluations in the region. The ED also utilizes Telestroke technology to virtually connect providers with stroke experts for immediate patient evaluations and treatment planning.

ED Renovations The hospital invested in structural enhancements for the department, beginning with the installation of new flooring throughout the entire ED. The State’s First Five-Star Rated Hospital for Quality

EvergreenHealth was the first five-star rated hospital in Washington state in 2016 in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Hospital Compare overall quality systems October rankings – joined only by one other hospital in the state in December. The rating summarizes up to 64 quality indicators to help patients make informed decisions about their care. EvergreenHealth’s five-star rating placed it among just 83 hospitals nationwide to earn the department’s highest score.

EvergreenHealth and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance celebrate 5th year of partnership at the Halvorson Cancer Center EvergreenHealth’s partnership with Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) continued to grow in 2016, with the number of patients seen with cancer at the Halvorson Cancer Center surpassing the 1,000 mark for the first time since the partnership began in 2011, and representing an overall growth of 7 percent in 2016. The center’s multidisciplinary prostate cancer treatment team, comprising members of Evergreen Urology Care, Radiation Oncology Care and SCCA Medical Oncology, also worked together in 2016 to develop a Metastatic Prostate Program that serves patients from around the state. The team saw significant growth in the number of prostate cases it treated, increasing 53 percent over 2015, with treatments performed onsite utilizing SpaceOAR and brachytherapy technologies.

Celebrating 25 Years of Compassionate Hospice Care and Service The EvergreenHealth Gene & Irene Wockner Hospice Care Center celebrated its 25th anniversary and honored its community of volunteers, staff, and supporters who contribute to the Puget Sound area’s only free-standing hospice center. Since 1991, the center has served more than 28,000 patients and families, bringing clinical excellence, compassionate care and comfort to those facing lifelimiting illness in its respectful home-like environment.

EvergreenHealth was named one of the nation’s top community hospitals by Becker’s Hospital Review on its annual “100 Great Community Hospitals” list, which recognized the health system for delivering quality care and exceptional service, while serving as a vital part of its community. In 2016, the health system was also named one of America’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Truven Health Analytics™ for its ability to improve patient outcomes and reduce overall expense per patient.

Among Top 5% of Hospitals in the Nation for Quality Healthgrades named EvergreenHealth as one of America’s 100 Best™ hospitals in five specialties: stroke care, pulmonary care, critical care, gastrointestinal care and general surgery. Expanded Specialty Services and Primary Care Network

EvergreenHealth Home Health Services Earns 4-Star Rating

In 2016, EvergreenHealth added 35 new physicians to improve its ability to serve specialty needs including in urology, urogynecology, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, and endocrinology. EvergreenHealth’s primary care network—the largest on the Eastside—also grew to 12 locations, when Lakeshore Clinic joined the growing health system, adding 18 additional primary care providers.

EvergreenHealth Home Health Services continued to serve thousands of residents across King and Snohomish Counties as the region’s largest provider of in-home care services that help patients recover from injuries, illnesses, and chronic conditions while remaining as independent as possible in their homes. In 2016, EvergreenHealth Home Health providers traveled over 1 million miles to make 130,000 visits in patients homes, and through their ongoing commitment to continually improving quality care earned, they earned a 4-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

EvergreenHealth and Overlake Medical Center form Eastside Health Alliance

EvergreenHealth’s Long-Range Master Facility Plan Begins A new long-range master facility plan, from nearly 18 months of planning beginning in late 2013, got underway with construction, starting on floors four and five of the Kirkland medical center’s Silver Tower. The plan, which also includes expansion into floors four and five of the DeYoung Pavilion in Kirkland and new practice locations in Kenmore and Mill Creek (2017 openings) among other projects, is designed to help ensure that EvergreenHealth continues to provide high quality, safe, compassionate and cost-effective health care to its growing community.

Named to Top National Health Care List by U.S. News & World Report For the fourth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report recognized EvergreenHealth as one of the top health care organizations in the region for its outstanding clinical care and service, and its excellence in providing the best care for the most serious or complicated medical conditions and procedures.

EvergreenHealth, Bloodworks Northwest Expand Partnership EvergreenHealth and Bloodworks Northwest opened an onsite transfusion lab on the EvergreenHealth campus in Kirkland, enhancing efficiency in blood work services and testing for patients on the Eastside. The joint initiative expands existing services provided by Seattle-based Bloodworks to EvergreenHealth patients, and further eliminates the barriers of time and proximity for critical transfusion services.

EvergreenHealth was recognized as a “Most Improved” hospital for the second consecutive year in the 2016 Health Care’s Most Wired survey, presented by the American Hospital Association’s Health Forum and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). The health system was also recognized for its noteworthy technology advancements in business and administrative management processes, clinical quality and safety, clinical integration, and other technical achievements.

2016 Highlights

The two Eastside health systems began work in 2016 to create a new partnership to improve access and coordination of health care, and offer patients the greatest quality and value. The joint venture paved the way for EvergreenHealth Partners to become part of a new clinically integrated network established by the new alliance, known as Eastside Health Network, which will enable patients to achieve positive clinical outcomes at the best value.

Every year, EvergreenHealth has a special responsibility to care for the community with programs and resources that are supported in part by levy funds invested by the residents we serve.

To help identify where community health care needs are greatest and allocate funds accordingly, the health system conducts a comprehensive assessment called the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) every three years using public health data specific to EvergreenHealth’s service area. In 2016, the latest CHNA revealed opportunities to continue increasing access to care for those who experience a range of barriers to quality care.

EvergreenHealth invested $3.9 million in 2016 to support levy-funded programs— from the health system’s 24/7 Nurse Navigator & Healthline which connects patients to providers and other resources, to specialized programs to provide access to care for the underinsured, and other programs—to fulfill its responsibility to the community to meet health care needs where they are greatest.

24/7 Nurse Navigator & Healthline In addition to serving as EvergreenHealth’s 24-hour on-call nurse triage line, the 24/7 Nurse Navigator & Healthline serves an equally important purpose by supporting the health system’s many community programs and resources.

Just as callers from around the region rely on Healthline for registration into critical programs and services, levyfunded programs at EvergreenHealth rely on Healthline to provide patients with access to their services. Its registered triage nurses help callers identify providers who meet individual needs based on specialty care, location and insurance, and they alleviate concerns for callers and determine the appropriate level of care for a range of clinical care needs and service.

In 2016, Healthline served tens of thousands of callers in the following ways: • 109,147 callers served • 36,019 callers received assistance with nurse triage advice • 4,908 physician referrals • 22,567 residents and employees registered for community classes offered at EvergreenHealth • 9,863 residents received referrals for community services

Right Care, Right Place, Right Time Healthline helps triage patients to the right level of care, based on their symptoms, so patients receive the most appropriate treatment.

Youth Mental Health Task Force Community Healthcare Access Team (CHAT) EvergreenHealth’s Community Healthcare Access Team (CHAT) partners with community organizations across the region to assist low-income, underinsured and uninsured residents who face barriers to accessing affordable and quality health care and social services.

In 2016, CHAT launched a new program to serve teens in our area, bringing specially trained EvergreenHealth social workers to manage crisis interventions in Lake Washington School District (LWSD) high schools.

When data showed a high number of 911 calls and unnecessary trips to the emergency department by teens, CHAT and LWSD worked to develop and implement an innovative approach to serve high school student in crisis within the school environment. Since implementing the program, fewer adolescent patients have been admitted to emergency departments, and high schools have reported lower truancy rates.

The program aims to continue this work and expand its reach even further in 2017, ensuring more students and their families can benefit from these onsite services.

In 2016, CHAT served 5,031 community members with assistance accessing appropriate resources for insurance, financial assistance, behavioral health services, information and help with general health care questions.

In 2016, EvergreenHealth launched a new grassroots initiative designed to connect community members who care about youth mental and emotional health to use their individual resources collectively, finding solutions to urgent mental health and addiction challenges facing young adults.

In its first year, the Youth Mental Health Task Force was met with overwhelming community engagement from faith-based organizations, members of school foundations, young individuals in recovery and parents whose families have been affected by addiction.

Tamara Johnson is a member of the 20-member volunteer task force who works as a recovery specialist at Millennials Northwest, an organization that provides peer-support services to youth and families struggling with behavioral health challenges, trauma, physical disabilities and addiction. She credits her interest in participating in the Youth Mental Health Task Force to the word “task” in its title.

“This group is extremely actionoriented,” Johnson said. “We need to help these kids now, and we use our meetings to not only talk about the issues at hand, but more importantly, to discover actionable solutions.”

EvergreenHealth Community Grief & Bereavement Services EvergreenHealth's levy-funded Community Grief & Bereavement Services offers individual support sessions, bereavement informational workshops, and support groups—among other services—for residents and families grieving a death.

Beyond its complimentary community support services, Grief and Bereavement Services created a new initiative in 2016 to support families suffering a loss during or shortly after pregnancy. As part of its specialty support services, the program developed an original publication, “Forever Part of You: Coping with the death of a baby during pregnancy or soon after.”

The eight-page booklet shares information about the grief process, including common emotions for parents dealing with this type of loss, and the impact grief can have on their relationships. It also provides guidelines for healing, opportunities for memory-making and information about additional resources offering support during this challenging time.

In 2016 EvergreenHealth Grief & Bereavement Services led more than 5,500 community-member encounters, helping community members with education and tools for normalizing responses to grief, increasing the ability to share emotions, and introducing tools for coping.

Inpatient Hospice Care Since 1991, EvergreenHealth has offered one of the region’s only free-standing inpatient hospice centers, serving thousands of families across King and Snohomish Counties over its 25-year history.

Today, levy funding helps to support patient care at the Gene & Irene Wockner Hospice Care Center, which in 2016 celebrated a quarter century of helping patients and families live as fully as possible through end-of-life care.

Celia Harper, RN, is the center’s manager and has been part of its growth since the beginning, joining the center as a hospice care nurse when it opened.

Today she manages its operations while also supporting clinical staff with patient care needs.

“While medical technologies have evolved over time, the more emotional aspect of providing compassionate end-of-life care and supporting families through this transition has remained constant,” she described. “As an inpatient care center, we act as both the emergency room and hospital for hospice care patients to ease pain and other disease symptoms, while also helping to address the emotional, mental and spiritual needs of our patients and their loved ones.”

The center offers 15 private patient rooms, each including sleeping spaces for visitors; and an outdoor patio opening onto beautiful surrounding gardens. In 2016, the center served 673 families saying goodbye to their loved ones.

STEM Partnership In 2016, EvergreenHealth continued its partnership with the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) in support of local high schools’ STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Global Health curriculum.

Since 2013, levy funds have supported EvergreenHealth’s work with LWSD schools to help educate students on health care career paths, arrange job shadow opportunities, and empower students to brainstorm and create solutions to real challenges facing today’s health care industry.

In the fall, students from Juanita High School’s STEM Global Health Signature Program had the opportunity to attend EvergreenHealth Grand Rounds and later heard a panel of health care professionals advise students on how to prepare for a career in medicine.

“We have many students considering careers in health care and this partnership provides significant advantages for learning about medical professions directly from the experts in those fields.

It’s such a valuable experience for these high schoolers and we’re thankful for the continued support from EvergreenHealth,” said Laurie Chelsey, STEM teacher at Juanita High School.

Local high school students presented solutions to real-world health care problems to EvergreenHealth leaders.

Geriatric Care In 2016, EvergreenHealth’s Geriatric Care team joined a new Medicare-funded research study to help detect the signs of dementia at its earliest stages, with the intent of giving doctors additional tools for managing the disease and promoting better outcomes for patients and families.

The Imaging-Dementia Evidence for Amyloid Scanning (IDEAS) Study enables Geriatric Care providers to recommend a positron emission tomography (PET) scan for patients at risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, in order to screen for the presence of amyloid structures in the brain—a key indicator of Alzheimer’s disease.

According to Anslem Opitoke, M.D., a provider in EvergreenHealth’s Geriatric Care practice, EvergreenHealth is one of the leading recruiters of patients to the study nationwide.

“Our hope is for this screening to become the gold standard in diagnosing dementia and other memory disorders,” Dr. Opitoke said.

“The data from the study will help inform research into promising new drug treatments and gives providers an additional tool for accurately diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease at its earliest stages, ultimately giving patients and families the widest range of options for treating the disease.”

Message from the Board Chair and Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Thank you for another year of incredible support. We are continually inspired by our community and you, our generous partners. Your commitment and investment in the EvergreenHealth Foundation allows us to assist the organization with much needed financial support for innovative programs and capital projects.

Your philanthropic investment over this last year brought an entire fleet of wireless monitors to our Family Maternity Care for laboring moms, a new program designed for those experiencing perinatal mood disorders, support for patients and families dealing with cancer, and funded 22 individual projects in a variety of departments geared toward direct patient care.

These investments have improved patient safety, brought a higher quality to our care, and enhanced the care we provide for every life we serve. Thank you again, because with EvergreenHealth’s continued growth comes the need for sustained support of our patients and community.

Message from the President and Director Dear Neighbors, We’re proud to share the milestones accomplished by EvergreenHealth Monroe Foundation this year thanks to your generosity, compassion and unwavering support to those in need.

Thanks to our supporters, including community members, various foundations across the county and corporate sponsors, we made important progress toward increasing access to high quality care for patients and families in Sky Valley.

We were guided in our work by Helen Keller’s words, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

In this spirit, our foundation board welcomed new board members, and we strengthened our collaborative partnership with the EvergreenHealth Foundation in Kirkland, while remaining focused on our commitment to our community in Monroe.

Through these efforts in 2016, we provided $150,000 to remodel The Recovery Center at EvergreenHealth Monroe.

We also named Dr. James Swenson the first Dr. Joseph Feek Community Service Award recipient, which recognizes those who exemplify leadership and have a profound impact on the health and well-being of our community. The award is named after Dr. Joseph Feek, a well-respected physician and one of the first surgeons in the Monroe community.

We look forward to continuing to put Keller’s words into action. Our priorities in 2017 include completing the funding for a 3-D tomosynthesis mammography unit for Monroe and a new campaign to be announced at September’s Blue Jean & Boots Gala.

EvergreenHealth Welcomes Additional Commissioners to its Board In 2016, voters approved a resolution to expand EvergreenHealth’s Board of Commissioners from five members to seven. Minerva Butler and Virgil Snyder were appointed to the board for the two new at-large positions, and later in 2016, Timothy McLaughlin joined the board following the retirement of long-time commissioner Auggie Kempf.

EvergreenHealth Monroe 2016 Highlights EvergreenHealth Monroe is delivering on its pledge to increase access to care for patients and families in its community. In 2016, the hospital served an increasing number of patients in the acute care hospital, emergency department, surgery department, GI/ endoscopy department, Addiction Recovery Program and other outpatient departments.

• In June, EvergreenHealth Monroe welcomed four internal medicine providers to serve as acute care hospitalists.

• The Recovery Center’s program for chemically using pregnant women doubled in 2016.

• EvergreenHealth Monroe collaborated with The Everett Clinic to continue offering medical oncology services in Monroe.

• The hospital renovated space in its Medical Office Building to accommodate visiting specialists in a new specialty suite.
