Dear friends, Welcome to the fall edition of Monitor.

We hope that you and your family are enjoying our Pacific Northwest’s fall season, and all that it brings with it, in good health and well-being.

The words we at EvergreenHealth live by every day, “Working together to improve the health and well-being of every life we touch,” mean a great deal to us. We have dedicated this edition of Monitor to stories about retaining and attaining your own personal definition of health and well-being … what we call “your healthiest best.”

I hope you’ll enjoy, and even more importantly be inspired by, these stories of patients, and of some of the dedicated EvergreenHealth professionals here to help you live your healthiest best—through every activity and milestone, and at every age and stage of life.

This handful of stories represents the thousands of personal narratives we have the honor and privilege to be a part of every year. As proud as we are to again earn recognition as being among the best hospitals in the nation, we are even more proud of these stories about the impact of the relationships between our providers and patients. They are why we exist and why we love what we do.

0-10 Years VACCINATIONS are the best defense against serious illnesses. Health care experts agree that following a recommended immunization schedule is both safe and effective, and protects children from preventable diseases and illnesses.

LIMITING SCREEN TIME begins at birth and should be closely controlled through the toddler years. Children’s brains develop rapidly in their earliest years and studies show kids learn best through interaction with people, not screens.

Following the Guidelines: Tweens and Teens 11-18 Years TEENS NEED SLEEP. Make sure adolescents get eight to 10 hours of sleep per night to help them feel their healthiest best.

Sleep deprivation has been shown to contribute to difficulty learning, poor concentration, and decreased problem-solving abilities in school-aged kids and teens.

MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS is a rare but deadly bacterial infection that can affect college students, particularly freshmen, who are at higher risk as they adjust to dorm living and have potentially weaker immune

systems from unhealthy habits or late nights of studying.

EvergreenHealth urges families to get their teens vaccinated before leaving for college.

HPV, or human papilloma virus, is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases that can cause cervical and other cancers, and prevention should start early. Providers recommend boys and girls as young as age 11 begin a series of HPV vaccines before they become sexually active.

Following the Guidelines: Women 21+ Years PAP SMEARS. Changing guidelines for cervical cancer screening have recently caused confusion about how often women should schedule a Pap smear.

According to Jeff Bray, MD an OB/GYN at EvergreenHealth Women’s Care, women do not need an annual Pap smear and should instead follow the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) guidelines to schedule one every three years. Pap smears help to detect precancerous changes and help determine if treatment is needed to prevent cancer from developing.

Begin Pap smears and pelvic exams at age 21, even if you are sexually active before then.

Continue Pap smears every three years until age 29, unless otherwise recommended by your provider.

After age 30 and through age 65, if you are average-risk, you can have a Pap smear every five years along with an HPV co-test.

Without HPV testing, continue your Pap smear every three years.

Women of all ages should continue annual pelvic exams with an OB/GYN or primary care provider and discuss overall health and any possible concerns.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

A pelvic exam involves a visual and physical examination of your organs by your doctor whereas a Pap smear involves collecting a sample of cells from the cervix.

“We are finding that cervical cancer—what the Pap smear primarily screens for—generally takes about 10 to 15 years to develop, so less frequent screening will still catch abnormalities for patients who are at the greatest risk,” Dr. Bray explained. “More frequent screenings in young women can lead to false-positives which can require invasive biopsies that are more harmful than they are helpful.”

Preventing chronic diseases through routine care is important at any age, and especially as patients reach their middle-age milestones and beyond According to Kyle Krekow, PA-C, blood screening and lipid panel testing can help patients gauge their progress towards living their healthiest best—and most importantly, prevent chronic disorders like diabetes and heart disease, or progressively worse outcomes like hypertension and hyperlipidemia.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS Work with your provider to benchmark and check your levels across several important health-risk indicators.

EvergreenHealth recommends that adults at average risk for colorectal cancer begin screening procedures—which can identify and remove precancerous polyps—at age 50 and continue based on your results and risk category.

Quit Smoking LUNG CANCER SCREENING FOR SMOKERS It’s never too late to quit.

That’s EvergreenHealth pulmonologist Lindy Klaff’s, MD, message to patients who smoke—no matter how old the smoker, how many packs a day or how many years they’ve indulged in the habit.

There is always an upside to smoking cessation, whether it’s improved quality of life or the chance to prevent more serious complications.

For patients with a significant history of smoking, EvergreenHealth has launched a new lung cancer screening program, which has the potential to decrease the risk of death among heavy smokers by as much as 20 percent. The program, still in its infancy, is being rolled out to be made readily available to all eligible patients across the EvergreenHealth system.

“Right now we’re focused on screening patients with the highest risk of developing lung cancer,” Dr. Klaff explained.

“There are clear benefits to screening, but tests can also reveal benign findings that can cause unnecessary stress in patients. There’s also some risk of exposure to radiation with this screening, so we’re focused on screening the patients who need it most.”

Memory Assessments Help Families Navigate Signs of Aging While some signs of aging are common milestones, others offer warning signs of potential memory disorders or other conditions requiring specialized geriatric care and treatment. In an age when Alzheimer’s disease impacts more than five million Americans each year, and is among the top three causes of death for Americans age 65 years and older, catching signs at their earliest onset can help patients and families navigate the challenges of a memory disorder.

EvergreenHealth’s Memory Assessment program, driven by EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care, enables patients referred by their primary care provider to have an evaluation to determine if they are exhibiting normal signs of aging or early signs of a memory disorder.

The comprehensive approach also examines personal health histories, family concerns, medications, physical abilities, lab tests and other diagnostics. Specialists, including geriatricians, nurses, social workers and pharmacists, then collaborate to examine the results and determine a diagnosis.

EvergreenHealth’s interdisciplinary Geriatric Care team looks at all of the contributing factors to memory loss impacting seniors. In addition to evaluating neurological influences, the assessment includes a review of social factors and family history, along with a pen-and-paper memory test in consultation with a social worker.

Clinical Trials Provide Options for Managing Chronic Disease When 46-year old Seattle-resident Kent Unruh began noticing symptoms of early-onset Parkinson’s disease, he went straight to work coordinating care from specialists across the Puget Sound region.

“The key to an effective approach to managing a disease like Parkinson’s is to bring the best elements together,” EvergreenHealth patient Kent Unruh shared. That search for excellence in medical care led Unruh to EvergreenHealth’s Research program.

As a research scientist himself, Unruh knew the advantages of participating in clinical trial programs and was impressed by EvergreenHealth’s access to trials that just a handful of institutions across the United States currently offer.

Under the guidance of his neurologist Pinky Agarwal, MD, Unruh enrolled in EvergreenHealth’s Apomorphine Infusion Parkinson’s study, which administers a continuous flow of medication that seeks to curb many of the symptoms which would otherwise keep Unruh from leading his active lifestyle.

“Clinical trials take time, effort and engagement on the patient’s part. Certainly, there are ups and downs, but the benefits can be pretty remarkable, as well,” Unruh shared.

Since enrolling in the Apomorphine Infusion Trial, Unruh has adapted his lifestyle to be able to continue doing the things that are important to him—spending time with his family, staying engaged in his work, and remaining physically active.

“It’s allowed me to still work

part-time. But the real gift in all of this is being able to come home and play with my children by shooting hoops in the street, or going for a short bicycle ride with them.”

“Trials are a big part of the comprehensive care that we offer at EvergreenHealth’s Booth Gardner Parkinson’s Care Center,” Dr. Agarwal explained. “In addition to the patient-centered approach of a community-focused health system, we offer cutting-edge research and medications that give patients different options for managing their condition. In Kent’s case, the trial is enabling him to maintain his quality of life, and the results we’ve seen so far have been very encouraging.”

Mobile Screening Mammograms Save Lives Linda Hanseth hadn’t had a screening mammogram in over 20 years.

The 70-year-old lifelong Sultan resident had a particularly painful experience years earlier and avoided returning for regular screenings, instead doing her best to push the potential consequences from her thoughts.

But last spring, during a visit to her longtime primary care provider Mark Raney, MD, Hanseth noticed EvergreenHealth’s mobile mammography coach stationed outside EvergreenHealth Primary Care in Sultan and took note.

During her appointment, clinical staff mentioned the coach’s walk-in screening availability and left Hanseth with information about the mobile mammography services.

“I had no intention of following up, but the next day I found myself dialing the number to make an appointment for a mammogram,” Hanseth recalled.

It turns out it was one of the best calls she’s ever made.

Hanseth was scheduled promptly for a screening mammogram aboard the coach in Sultan, and though it wasn’t completely painless, she describes the experience much more positively than her prior mammograms—and abundantly worthwhile.

The 3-D screening detected a mass, and it was stage II breast cancer.

Hanseth’s care team at EvergreenHealth, with Dr. Raney at the center, quickly began coordinating a treatment plan that included surgery and radiation at EvergreenHealth’s main campus in Kirkland.

“I’ve walked this path with many patients,” Dr. Raney said. “We know the next 10 to 20 steps in the process and can anticipate our patients’ unasked questions.”

Despite her diagnosis, Hanseth said she remained at peace

throughout the process knowing that she was in good hands.

“Dr. Raney is not just my doctor.

He’s my neighbor and he’s my friend,” Hanseth shared. “I knew that he would make it easy for me to consider all of my options and move forward with the best plan for treatment with my EvergreenHealth doctors.”

Today, Hanseth is cancer-free and a passionate advocate for breast health screening. “Now I tell everyone, just do it. It may save your life.”

EvergreenHealth follows the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s guidelines that recommend all women receive clinical breast exams beginning at age 30 and annual screening mammograms beginning at age 40.

MYTH FACT: Just one in eight breast cancers are hereditary.

Instead, the vast majority are considered “sporadic,” which means the patient has no genetic history of the disease.

The coach was the first of its kind west of the Mississippi to offer 3-D mammography screening aboard a mobile unit, offering the same high quality experience that patients receive in the Breast Health Center at EvergreenHealth’s hospital campus in Kirkland.

Hassle-free exams are completed in about 20 minutes, and walk-in and scheduled appointments are available every day of the week.

Cardiac Rehab Provides a Safe Space for Staying Fit

When Harlan Harris’ cardiologist prescribed a fitness and rehabilitation program at EvergreenHealth following a heart procedure, the 54-year-old Microsoft employee was skeptical.

Harris expected the exercise rehab experience to be underwhelming and tailored to elderly adults.

He found just the opposite. “Cardiac Rehab is a really vibrant place full of healthy people from our community who want to get back to their active lives,” Harris described.

Harris joined a 12-week program designed for patients to engage in exercise in a safe environment closely monitored by clinical providers.

For Harris, the benefits were both physically rewarding and greatly educational.

“My key learning was realizing how much daily exercise is a magic bullet for me—it’s my most important medicine. Now, working out on my own, I can see the direct impact of the metrics I’m tracking on my health.”

Preparing for an Emergency Many Northwest residents agree that a major earthquake will shake this region at some point during our lifetimes. Though we may not know exactly when it might occur, EvergreenHealth experts urge residents to be prepared for when that day—or any unexpected emergency­—comes our way.

“We all have a responsibility to be personally prepared in case of an emergency or natural disaster,” said Barb Jensen, Emergency Preparedness and Trauma Program Manager at EvergreenHealth. “It’s easy to think volunteers will rush in after a disaster happens; however, that is not our reality. Residents should think about being prepared to shelter in place and care for themselves and their families for up to five to seven days. Preparation takes time and commitment, but the resources for making a good plan are readily available.”

Laughter has such inherent potential, we’re researching the impact of an eightweek laughter therapy program on individuals with a variety of neurological disorders. This unique study, for which we are actively recruiting, is supported by a grant from the EvergreenHealth Foundation.

Mary Hejnal, LICSW, Bereavement and Family Support Specialist, EvergreenHealth Grief & Bereavement Coping with a death is difficult any time of year, but in fall and winter months Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can exacerbate grief and bereavement periods, causing additional angst, anxiety or mood swings. We offer counseling, including one-hour sessions with our clinical social workers, workshops, support groups and other resources to help individuals cope with loss in their own personal way.

New Wireless Fetal Monitors Provide Standardized Care Seasons of Hope Fundraising Luncheon Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Hospice Center Join us on Nov. 10, 2016 for the 8th annual Seasons of Hope Fundraising Luncheon, benefiting EvergreenHealth Hospice and Palliative Care programs and services.

This year’s luncheon will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Gene & Irene Wockner Hospice Center in Kirkland, the only free-standing, inpatient hospice center in King and Snohomish counties.

We hope you’ll help us recognize a quarter century at the inpatient care center by supporting these valuable services in our community.

The Family Maternity Center (FMC) care team and our patients would like to extend a big thank you to all who supported the 2016 Evergreen Gala.

Proceeds from the 2016 Evergreen Gala funded a new fleet of wireless fetal monitors for EvergreenHealth’s Family Maternity Center.

The wireless technology allows mothers laboring at EvergreenHealth to move freely during labor with greater peace of mind and less risk of disrupting the fetal monitor, which helps track the baby’s vital signs. The freedom of mobility has been shown to help with fetal descent, fetal positioning and naturally increases labor progression.

After testing a series of brands and models, assessing patient and staff needs, and listening to staff input, the FMC selected a wireless monitoring system by Phillips.

According to Carolyn Short, RN in the FMC, using a single brand of monitoring equipment helps improve patient safety and promotes ease of use among nursing staff.

“I believe I speak for a lot of FMC nursing staff when I say we are very excited to receive these great new monitors and we are very happy with our decision to go with Philips,” Short added.

SAVE THE DATE The Evergreen Gala | April 29, 2017 The Charitable Focus of the 2017 Evergreen Gala is EvergreenHealth’s Transitional Care Unit for Behavioral Health Our community is experiencing an alarming increase in the number of patients with behavioral health needs. The safety and security of these patients and our staff present some distinct challenges. Proceeds from the 2017 Evergreen Gala will enable EvergreenHealth to design a setting that better supports these patients. The Transitional Care Unit for Behavioral Health will be designed to provide for the patient’s unique needs while providers transition their care to their final treatment setting.

EvergreenHealth Monroe Foundation’s 3rd Annual Blue Jeans and Boots Gala Raises $141,000 for 3-D Mammography Dr. James Swenson was presented with the first annual Dr. Joseph Feek Community Service Award for his outstanding service to the Monroe Community.

Blankets from Local Partnership to Benefit Cancer Services The EvergreenHealth Foundation was pleased to accept a donation of fleece blankets from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in partnership with Eastside Subaru.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society partners with local businesses in the communities they serve to provide these blankets to local nonprofits. The beautiful, individually wrapped and boxed blankets will be given to EvergreenHealth patients through our Cancer Support Services.

We want to extend a big thank you to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Washington/Alaska and Eastside Subaru for this gift!

Guests at the 3rd Annual Blue Jeans & Boots Gala held in September at Pine Creek Nursery in Monroe jumpstarted a yearlong campaign to raise funds to bring a permanent 3-D Tomosynthesis Mammography Unit to the Breast Center at EvergreenHealth Monroe. The Foundation’s goal is to raise $200,000 to support the hospital’s purchase of this equipment in 2017. Fundraising is off to a strong start thanks to proceeds from this year's gala.

“Thank you to our sponsors and guests at the gala who pledged $141,000 to our yearlong campaign to raise these important funds. We are confident that our generous local community will help make 3-D breast cancer screening a reality in 2017, and we are so grateful for their support,” said Connie Wittren, Director of the EvergreenHealth Monroe Foundation.
