A JOINTREPLACEMENT SURGERY

that Reverses Shoulder Pain Throughout his career, Dr. Edwin “Ned” Brockenbrough, a vascular and thoracic surgeon, knew he needed a hobby that could complement his demanding on-call schedule. He took to gardening, and the grounds surrounding his Hunts Point home—a place his family has lived for 50 years—show the meticulousness and care he’s put into it over the decades. But the now retired, active 85-year-old has never been one to sit idle. Family vacations took the Brockenbroughs to a beloved fishing resort in Alaska, where, in the summer of 2014, they returned for their 30th annual visit. As the trip neared its end, Dr. Brockenbrough was aboard a small boat when it suddenly pitched and sent him shoulder-first into the boat’s hull. It was a serious enough blow that Dr. Brockenbrough knew he’d need treatment, but knew it could wait until his return home.

Back in Washington, an X-ray revealed a complex fracture that needed to be stabilized by a sling and mended with plenty of rest. But after a few months, the injury began bothering him more severely and an MRI showed damage to his rotator cuff with multiple fractures that did not heal. Though he was hesitant to pursue surgery, Dr. Brockenbrough’s son, Dr. John Brockenbrough, an otolaryngologist at EvergreenHealth, referred him to Dr. Michael Codsi who is fellowship-trained in orthopedic shoulder surgery. “He was living with a significant, complex injury that was limiting his daily life in ways that he may have not even noticed at the time,” Dr. Codsi explained. “The combination of arthritis, shoulder blade fractures, and a tear in his rotator cuff tendon made him a good candidate for a specialized procedure that we do here at EvergreenHealth, providing a good chance of relieving his pain and restoring his strength for the long run.” The solution was reverse shoulder replacement surgery. In a reverse replacement, highly skilled and specially trained surgeons repair the joint by swapping the position of the shoulder’s ball and socket joint after removing the areas of Dr. Michael Codsi, EvergreenHealth Orthopedic Surgeon

the bones damaged by arthritis. Instead of the ball extending as the top portion of the arm bone – as it would in a typical shoulder – a reverse repair uses a prosthesis that attaches a new ball to the shoulder bone and creates a socket to replace the top of the arm bone.

“This relatively new procedure provides a treatment option to a segment of the population that previously didn’t have a viable long-term solution,” Dr. Codsi added. Dr. Codsi and his partner, Dr. Vincent Santoro, are among the few specialists in the region who are trained in reverse replacements, which have been increasingly utilized over the last decade. As for Dr. Brockenbrough – he couldn’t feel better. He’s back to his regular exercise routine, enjoying his garden, and he was able to return to Alaska this year, injury-free, for his family’s annual fishing trip.

“I may be 85, but thanks in part to this team, I just don’t feel like it!”

FIND THE PERFECT FIT WITH CUSTOMIZED KNEE IMPLANTS Dr. Vincent Santoro, an orthopedic surgeon at EvergreenHealth, is one of Washington state’s leaders in using customized implants for total knee-replacement surgery that are tailored to fit each patient’s specific anatomy. With the ConforMIS prosthesis, no two implants are the same. Instead of using traditional “off-the-shelf” implants that come in standard sizes, Dr. Santoro uses 3D mapping to create a model to produce customized knee implants, specially designed to fit each patient’s natural shape and contours. “The result for patients is a quicker recovery and considerably less pain that’s often associated with the fit of an unmatched replacement,” Dr. Santoro said. “Customized implants are also projected to have a longer lifespan than traditional alternatives, which provides an ideal solution for patients who want to lead an active lifestyle for 20-plus years down the road.”

Seventeen-year-old Iza Alcorn is a busy high school student who wasn’t ready to be slowed down by a sore throat last year. But when she began complaining of headaches and sensitivity to light, her mom knew something wasn’t right. “When it comes to your kids, you know them the best,” said Norma Arauz, Iza’s mother. “Something inside told me to take Iza’s concerns seriously.”

“Something inside told me to take Iza’s concerns seriously.” Iza Alcorn and her mother, Norma Arauz

A visit to the Bothell family’s primary care provider, Dr. Lilaine Leonardo at the Lakeshore Clinic, confirmed her mother’s intuition. Dr. Leonardo detected thyroid nodules, which sparked a two-week, seamless coordination of care from biopsy to cancer diagnosis, followed by surgery to remove harmful cells from the active teenager’s thyroid and lymph nodes. Though her prognosis was promising, the process was intensely emotional for Iza and her family. “Hearing I had cancer was really hard for me and my family, but I knew I was in good hands and my doctors made me feel like I was going to get through this,” Iza described. “I knew complaining wasn’t going to help.”

Iza first saw Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia at EvergreenHealth Diabetes & Endocrinology Care for a biopsy that confirmed papillary thyroid carcinoma. Dr. Patil-Sisodia referred her to Dr. John Brockenbrough of EvergreenHealth Ear, Nose & Throat Care, who performed a successful surgery to remove the cancer. Dr. Brockenbrough credits Iza’s positive attitude, along with crucial family support, as some of the most important factors that have contributed to her fast recovery. “As a cancer care provider, I treat patients who understandably have a lot of apprehension,” Dr. Brockenbrough said. “Through this whole process, Iza has remained determined and incredibly optimistic. In her case, recovery has as much to do with her outlook on life as it does with the medical interventions we provided. Positive people like Iza tend to achieve better outcomes.” Looking back, Iza remembers last spring as a time that was just too busy to let cancer get in her way. Even amid her diagnosis and treatment, she earned her best report card. Now cancer-free, she continues to set a high bar for herself in her school work, on the soccer field and in preparing for college next year, where Iza hopes to study to become a nurse. “I was thrilled to learn that she wants to enter the health care field,” Dr. Brockenbrough said. “She is going to be an exceptional provider, and Dr. Patil and I have already promised to give our input on her college essay. We know she’s going to do great things.”

When a Diabetes Diagnosis Provides a New Lease on Life

After Abby Edwards was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2004, she spent the better part of a decade carefully managing her symptoms with prescribed oral medications, a strict diet and an impressive exercise routine. By 2014, though, something was off. “I just didn’t feel well; I didn’t feel like myself,” she described. Despite hearing otherwise from her doctors at the time, Edwards’ instincts led her to believe that her symptoms had more to do with her diabetes than poor health. She decided to see a different specialist, and was referred to Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia, who practices endocrinology at EvergreenHealth. From their first meeting, Edwards knew she had found a partner who was a passionate advocate for her health. “I felt for the first time that someone really listened to my story and was determined to figure out what was going on,” Edwards said. Together, they ran a series of tests— new tests—that would reveal why her regimen, despite her commitment to a healthy lifestyle, seemed to be failing. “Listening to Abby set something off in my mind,” Dr. PatilSisodia explained.

other than insulin, would effectively treat her symptoms. They immediately began a new regimen of insulin injections and regular blood-sugar level checks and eventually transitioned Edwards to an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor that she wears around the clock to help manage her blood sugar and insulin levels.

“I felt for the first time that someone really listened to my story …” “I have a great deal of respect for Abby and her motivation. She took the bull by the horns and followed up with diabetes education, focused on her diet and learned how to trust her body again,” Dr. Patil-Sisodia shared. Observing the two, it’s evident that feeling of respect is mutual. Now a year after her Type 1 diagnosis, Edwards describes having a new lease on life. “I had gotten to the point where I had lost confidence in doing Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia, EvergreenHealth Diabetes & Endocrinology Care

“It was very apparent that she didn’t have the typical indicators of a Type 2 diabetic and her body wasn’t responding to the medications she had been taking for 10 years.” Dr. Patil-Sisodia’s test confirmed that Edwards’ pancreas had completely ceased producing insulin and that she in fact had Type 1 diabetes, which is managed with a very different approach. It’s why no medication,

simple things I once enjoyed. But by following Dr. Patil-Sisodia’s instructions and learning how to trust my body again, I feel like I’ve gotten my life back,” Edwards explained.

“I can’t think of a better outcome to any story,” Dr. Patil-Sisodia beamed.

INNOVATION ADDS MORE COMFORT TO PROSTATE CANCER CARE When Joe Erickson sat down with the radiation oncology team at EvergreenHealth, he knew their transparent approach to treatment options was just what he needed to start his battle against prostate cancer. What he didn’t know was that he would be a prime candidate for a procedure that has been hailed as the last decade’s most significant advancement in prostate cancer care. The new treatment is being pioneered by Dr. R. Alex Hsi, a radiation oncologist specializing in brachytherapy at EvergreenHealth’s Halvorson Cancer Center.

By injecting a gel-like substance between the prostate and the rectum, the treatment serves as a protective barrier throughout the course of radiation treatments. The gel, called SpaceOAR, was approved by the FDA in April of this year following extensive clinical trials led by Dr. Hsi and a team of researchers.

WHAT IS BRACHYTHERAPY? As a specialist in brachytherapy, Dr. Hsi, in collaboration with his urology colleagues, places radioactive seeds in or near tumors in the prostate, which work alone or in combination with external beam radiation delivered by EvergreenHealth’s state-of-the-art linear accelerator.

“Though it’s common for many men with prostate cancer to experience excellent outcomes and survival rates, radiation treatment can be damaging to neighboring organs, and that can have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life,” Dr. Hsi explained. “What we’ve discovered with this new intervention is that we can improve patients’ comfort and reduce radiation exposure to normal tissues by 75 percent.” Dr. R. Alex Hsi, EvergreenHealth Radiation Oncologist

Joe Erickson

The ultrasound-guided injections use liquids that form a solid gel once in place. Acting as a temporary buffer, the new technology separates the prostate and the rectum for up to six months before it naturally dissolves and safely reabsorbs into the patient’s body. Erickson, the first patient at EvergreenHealth to receive the treatment, said he is optimistic about his prognosis. “There have been a lot of decisions to make about my treatment so far, and there will be more, so I feel lucky to have such a great team on my side.”

Living Your Healthiest Best

Providers across the EvergreenHealth system are connected by the shared values of living well and striving for fulfillment in many aspects of life. We call it living your healthiest best. We asked specialists what living your “healthiest best” means for their patients and for them, personally, too.

“Living my healthiest best means keeping a positive attitude and staying happy. I believe that good health is linked to happiness. I feel that keeping the patients that I work with happy, along with providing safe and quality health care, will lead to the best outcome.” Andrew Martina, O.T.R./L., Occupational Therapist, Rehabilitation Services

“My family and I make intentional choices to spend quality time doing something fun and active. That’s how I’ve been living my healthiest best lately, as a family unit.” Karlyn Huddy, M.D., EvergreenHealth Heart & Vascular Care

“Staying active is very important. Finding fun and creative ways to do so makes it even more enjoyable. The trick is to adapt to your environment…shine, sleet, or snow.” Oscar Gonzalez, M.D., Preventive Cardiologist, EvergreenHealth Heart & Vascular Care

“Living your ‘healthiest best’ is about taking care of yourself by exercising regularly, having a healthy diet, not overeating, getting adequate sleep, having good ways of managing stress and enjoying life. For patients living with a chronic disease, there is also a role for a care provider team to give knowledge and guidance in developing an individual treatment plan.” Ted R. Brown, M.D., M.P.H., Director of NeuroRehabilitation, MS Center at EvergreenHealth

“I sleep. Sometimes that’s easier said than done, but a good night’s sleep is the foundation for everything else that matters to me – health, family, friends, learning, work, fun. Restorative sleep is so hard to come by in the hospital, and it has a huge impact on how people feel when they’re admitted. At least twice a week, patients tell me, ‘I’d feel so much better if I could just get one good night of sleep.’ When it finally happens, when they sleep through the night, they look and feel like a million bucks.” Jill A. Denny, M.D., EvergreenHealth Hospice & Palliative Care

“Living your healthiest best may seem impossible: eat better, lose weight, avoid stress and get enough sleep. Where do you begin? What I do and advise my patients to do is focus on one thing and set achievable milestones. If you want to live a healthy lifestyle, define your goal and tackle it one step at a time. I recently backpacked the Grand Canyon, from the South to the North Rim. I was intimidated by the final 6,000-foot ascent, not to mention the 30-pound pack that I was carrying. I wasn’t sure that I could do it. I took it step by step. I focused on getting to the top of each switchback and before I knew it, I conquered all 6,000 feet with that pack on my back.” Josephine Wang, M.D., EvergreenHealth Women’s Care

“I run, and mostly in wooded areas. Especially if I’m feeling stressed or tired from a long day of work, running makes my entire body feel relieved and clears my mind. I love the foliage of the Pacific Northwest and getting outdoors brings me joy. I try to remember this when working with my patients and incorporate therapy outside whenever possible.”

ANTERIOR APPROACH HIP REPLACEMENT – QUICK RECOVERY AND LESS PAIN Orthopedic surgeons at EvergreenHealth are among the few providers in the region to offer the latest procedure in hip replacement surgery. According to Drs. Jeff Stickney and Chris Boone, the “anterior approach” significantly reduces recovery time and pain, and yields better mobility for patients who want to continue living an active lifestyle. By operating on the front of the hip – where your front pant pocket would be – these highly trained surgeons work between tissues without making incisions into the muscles. The result is a faster recovery, with many patients returning home the same day of the procedure. Attend a FREE seminar to learn if the anterior approach is right for you. Visit www.evergreenhealth.com/hip for upcoming dates this fall.

Brianne Lynch, D.P.T., Rehabilitation Services Dr. Chris Boone, Bellevue Bone and Joint

“My wife, son and I play tennis four or five times a week! Not only does it help me maintain my cardiovascular health, it has helped me stay close to my family while encouraging my son to live a healthy, active lifestyle. Playing tennis is great for reducing stress and keeps me mentally sharp to continue providing care for patients every day.” Jacob Lin, M.D., EvergreenHealth Heart & Vascular Care

EvergreenHealth Foundation News Show your support for

Hospice and Palliative Care Thursday, November 12, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Lynnwood Convention Center $50/person; $500/table of 10 You can reserve tickets online at www.SeasonsofHopeLuncheon.org or by calling 425.899.1900. For more information about the luncheon, contact Christie Elliott at the EvergreenHealth Foundation at 425.899.1906 or caelliott@evergreenhealth.com. Suggested donation of $100 is encouraged. EvergreenHealth’s Hospice and Palliative Care programs rely on your generosity to provide these compassionate services to patients and their families in some of the most challenging and trying times—dying and death. You can show your support by joining us at the seventh annual Seasons of Hope Luncheon, which benefits both programs.

“Our experience with EvergreenHealth Hospice was truly transformational during my wife’s battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme. They altered our feelings of fear and lessened the burden of caregiving, allowing us to focus on living fully with my wife during her end-oflife journey. Everyone should be this fortunate!” —Jeff Baker This year’s Seasons of Hope program features keynote speaker Terry Hershey: author, humorist, speaker, dad, ordained minister and garden designer. Hershey is an internationally known speaker who shares his practice of “pause” and “sanctuary,” to help us do less and live more. Hershey will illustrate that sanctuary is not a new-age fad or lifestyle upheaval; rather it’s a way to approach and embrace your daily life – personal or corporate – through a lens of grace, freedom, and contentedness.

Coluccio Golf Tournament Raises More Than $60,000 for Parkinson’s Care The Frank Coluccio Construction Company hosted an amazing golf tournament in August at The Golf Club at Newcastle, raising more than $60,000. With over 140 guests, the event was a major success to support the purchase of a new state-of-the-art AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill for the Booth Gardner Parkinson’s Center at EvergreenHealth’s Neurological Institute. With this new treadmill, developed with technology from NASA, patients are supported by a waist belt, making them virtually weightless, while they use their muscle memory to rehabilitate and recover quickly.

Dr. Jeff Tomlin, EvergreenHealth Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer joined Nick Coluccio, co-owner of Frank Coluccio Construction, on the course and spoke on behalf of EvergreenHealth at the awards ceremony following the tournament.

Thank you to Frank Coluccio Construction and the Coluccio family, event sponsors, donors, volunteers, and guests who support EvergreenHealth’s mission to advance the health of this community. Pictured (left to right): Pat Grady, Coluccio Construction employee; Nick Coluccio; Dr. Jeff Tomlin; and Grant Degginger, an attorney with Lane Powell, which also sponsored the event.

Golden Hammer Ceremony Kicks off Acute Rehabilitation Unit Remodel Members of the Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) Medical and Management Team, the Halvorson family, and the Remak family were invited to join the Foundation team at the Golden Hammer Ceremony in July, signifying the start of the ARU remodel. With real golden hammers in tow, attendees threw caution to the wind (figuratively, of course) and gave it their best shot—putting holes in a designated wall that has since been demolished for pivotal upgrades to the facility. The new ARU will feature 14 upgraded patient rooms that will resemble a home bedroom with advanced patient beds. The updated unit will also offer a “Home Transition Apartment,” which along with the redesigned rooms, will help improve the patient experience and enable patients to be on the fast-track to recovery through these enhanced features.

... will help improve the patient experience and enable patients to be on the fast-track to recovery ... The Home Transition Apartment will act as the crucial transition between EvergreenHealth and home-life— carefully integrating patients to real-world surroundings, such as a kitchen and other living areas. The Home Transition Apartment was named in honor of Nancy Remak’s parents, Gene and Ruth Freedman. The Golden Hammer Ceremony denoted the kick-off of the fourphase remodel, which will be completed by year-end. The new ARU is coming to fruition thanks to the generous donors of the 2014 Evergreen Gala, the Remak and Halvorson families, and Michael and Mary Kay Hallman.

Blue Jeans and Boots Gala raised more than $108,000 to support EvergreenHealth Monroe Foundation! Guests in western attire joined EvergreenHealth Monroe Foundation for its Blue Jeans and Boots Gala on September 19, 2015. The event featured country music, silent and live auctions, a raffle and a special message from Dr. Jim Swenson, an orthopedic surgeon in Monroe, who is currently serving in the Army Reserves in Afghanistan. The Gala was the kick-off of a yearlong $150,000 campaign to support the remodel of EvergreenHealth Monroe’s Recovery Center. A SPECIAL THANK YOU

Save the Date: APRIL 30, 2016

Make your commitment early!

The charitable focus of the 2016 Evergreen Gala is EvergreenHealth’s Family Maternity Center. As one of the busiest maternity centers in the state, the center has the privilege of playing a special part in the lives of over 4,500 families each year as they welcome their new babies. Ensuring these families experience a personalized, comfortable, safe and joy-filled arrival of their treasured little one is of utmost importance. Gala proceeds will fund new fetal monitors, allowing our laboring mothers to experience the highest level of mobility, comfort and safety during this incredibly important time. Visit EvergreenGala.org or call 425.899.1900 for more information.

to The Pine Creek Nursery for donating its space, Hook and Ladder Barbeque for donating their catering services, emcee Jesse Jones of KIRO-TV and all of the wonderful auction donors, volunteers, and guests.
