I am really pleased that so many local people will be joining community events to share the spirit of Christmas with their friends and neighbours. I hope that if you or someone you know is feeling lonely that you will join the many community events happening in Falmouth and Penryn.
It should be possible for all of us to listen to each other respectfully and appreciate and value our differences. Kindness in my opinion is a much undervalued characteristic. Going forward we need to step back from the angry, even hateful public discourse that has been a sad feature of 2016 and commit to reconnecting with each other in 2017. From spending time with people all around my constituency I know that there is much more that unites us than divides us.
I also enjoy inviting someone who would otherwise be on their own. It’s a habit I started when I was young and living overseas when I couldn’t afford to make it home. So I recreated the sense of family with others who were also stranded, far from their loved ones. My favourite Christmas away from home was spent cooking a traditional British Christmas lunch, on a very rickety old stove, in the Riverside Church shelter for homeless men in New York City.

Christmas light Switch on and late night shopping Join in the Christmas celebrations as Falmouth school children parade through the town to The Moor for the annual lights switch on. The children’s parade starts at Events Square and finishes on The Moor, where the schools perform Christmas songs and carols before the lights switch on. Lots of food, drink and festive fun to be had. As part of the lights switch on celebrations the Municipal Buildings will be will be hosting a very special visitor, Father Christmas! Bring the children to see Santa in his grotto and collect an early Christmas present from 5.50 – 8 pm. Falmouth Art Gallery will be open during this time so you can browse for gifts in the shop and enjoy the ‘Little and Large’ exhibition.

Cornwall Hospice Care’s annual Santa Fun Run takes place on Saturday 10th December and everyone is invited to take part in the festive fun. Men and women, boys and girls, young and old – everyone is welcome to join this Christmas fundraiser.You can choose to run, jog or walk along the route and have a choice of two distances; either one and a half or three miles. Tanya’s Courage Trust Christmas Fayre on The Moor Come along and meet Father Christmas at Santa’s Grotto, listen to some live music, drink mulled wine and nibble on mince pies. The Flicka Foundation will also be attending with their donkeys. All monies raised will be used by the Tanya’s Courage Trust to support young people with Cancer.

Christmas movies on The Moor Cornwall Film Festival’s Christmas screenings of Gremlins (12A) and Home Alone (PG) on The Moor, inside a lovely marquee! Refreshments will be provided by Proper Pancakes – including gourmet popcorn, mince pies and other delicious festive treats! The Harmony Choir raises money for good causes by performing throughout Falmouth Town on Christmas Eve. This Christmas will be the Harmony Choirs’ 117th performance and this Falmouth tradition is 116 years old. Even two world wars couldn’t stop the choir’s Christmas Eve performance. The route beings at the Falmouth Watersports Centre and moves through town to finish on The Moor.

Saturday 3rd December 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm Christmas Lights Switch On- Kids Afternoon Entertainment Temperance Hall, Lower Market Street Bring your children along to a free fun afternoon prior to the Christmas Lights Switch On to help get them in that Christmas Spirit! The Party People Cornwall will provide a magic show with a real pantomime atmosphere including some balloon modelling, juggling and prizes for the children who get picked to be the magicians helper. They also like to have party dance fun with our mascot ‘The Funny Bunny’ – who gives out gold medals to the star dances. They also have several audience participation games that are lots of fun.

6.15pm Parade to gather at Memorial Garden’s, at 6.15pm, the Mayor and Mock Mayor will lead the lantern parade to the Chapel Steps where the Switch on Ceremony will take place at 6.30pm. Mrs Kathy Wells a senior citizen of the Town will switch on the 2016 lights. The Porthleven Silver Band will lead the Penryn Academy School children and members public in some festive carols. In the street Town Hall and Chapel there will be singing from the Suitcase singers and,Viva Voca a university Choir. Jazz Harbour a group also from the Uni will be playing and Co-act our very own community dance group will be performing near the Town Hall. Mulled wine in the Town Hall and refreshments in the Chapel. 8pm At 8pm there will be a parade down to the Memorial Garden’s when the 18 trees one for each person who lost their life there in the second word war will be switched on.
Shops will be open lots of foodie outlets and some street stalls to choose from, what is stopping you, come on down! This year there is also the shop window competition, new this year will be a resident’s and garden light competition.

Gel and Acrylic Extensions
A lightweight plastic tip that follows the shape of the nail is glued to the tip of the natural nail in order to add length. BBes Beryl ‘s Turkey, leek and blue cheese mashed potato pie
This turkey, leek and blue cheese mashed potato pie is a great recipe to use up leftovers from Christmas lunch
• 2 tbsp plain flour • 2 leeks, finely sliced • 25g butter, plus extra to dot • 1 small onion, finely sliced • 70g pancetta or smoked bacon, sliced • 400g leftover roast turkey (use leg and breast meat), torn into pieces • 2 fat garlic cloves, crushed • 100ml crème fraîche • 150ml leftover turkey stock • 3 fresh rosemary sprigs, leaves picked and finely chopped • 800g cold leftover mashed potato (or 900g floury potatoes, peeled and simmered until really tender, then mashed with 4-5 tbsp cream, a good knob of butter and lots of seasoning) • 175g blue cheese, such as Castello Creamy Blue or Stilton, crumbled
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Fry the pancetta or bacon in a dry frying pan until crisp, then remove to a large bowl using a slotted spoon. Add the butter to the pan and, when foaming, add the onion and leeks. Soften over a low heat for 15 minutes, then stir through the garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Add to the pancetta/bacon and set aside to cool. 2. Stir the turkey through the cooled onion, leek and pancetta/bacon mixture along with the flour, crème fraîche
and stock, 150g of the blue cheese and the chopped rosemary. Season with a good grinding of black pepper and a pinch of salt. 3. Spoon into a 1.5 litre ovenproof dish, then top with mashed potato, using a fork to create peaks. Dot with butter and the rest of the cheese. Bake for 40 minutes until the top is golden and the centre is piping hot. Serve with steamed greens.

POST-CHRISTMAS BLUES – AND THE JOYS OF HOSPITALISATION! Presuming that everyone is looking forward to enjoying themselves, human, canine and feline – though cats always enjoy themselves as they are so much in control! – then it’s always timely to think about those pets who may not have such a good ‘festive’ season. Many conditions that we come across in dayto-day general practice start off with an animal presented to us with only vague signs, ranging from: “He’s off his food and doesn’t want to go for a walk”; to “I’m not sure that there’s anything wrong with him but to me he’s not quite right”. Now I take my hat off to pet owners for the level of care and attention that they devote to their pets, and, from my point of view as a vet, owners are hugely gifted in spotting signs of illhealth almost before they occur. So it is that we regularly see pets which are in the first stages of actually quite serious conditions, but because we see them early on, we are able to do something about them with a reasonable degree of success. Many of these “vague illnesses” are to do with metabolic conditions – which are situations where the body’s own organs are starting not to work very well. Kidney disease, liver failure, and diabetes, are among the most common that we encounter. Frequently dogs and cats like this are dehydrated, maybe anaemic, sometimes running high fevers, and while not generally in any pain as such, they’re just very poorly. Think ‘man-flu’ and then some – they can be that bad!
time of the day or night, giving us information as to how the kidneys / liver / pancreas might be functioning, how the blood cells are responding, and how your pet is coping with the disease / treatment. Are they anaemic – are there lots of white blood cells fighting off an infection – is there a lungworm problem – is the blood clotting properly? Yet chiefly, most of these cats and dogs will be dehydrated, which is a situation which quickly brings about its own problems. Any dehydrated animal will become quite depressed and tired, and therefore not want to eat. We can assess the state of dehydration by interpreting the information from blood samples, and use intravenous drips to slowly but surely reverse this slide into what might be a terminal state. This isn’t something that can be rushed – fluids have to be carefully controlled and regularly monitored with simple blood tests – and cats and dogs are often resident with us in the Falmouth Veterinary Hospital for several days whilst slowly starting to improve. keen on just bonding with a cat or a dog, and trying to suss out just what might work for that particular pet. Is it hand-feeding a particular diet / treat? Is it a shampoo and a bit of a massage? Is it just talking to them and stroking? It all sounds so straightforward, yet it’s only possible when a pet is resident in the hospital. What’s crucial, to my mind, is the continuity of care. While vet practices all over offer first class treatments during the working day, it’s often a different story out of hours. Even if your dog or cat is hospitalised during the day, then maybe after the doors are shut there is nobody to monitor that drip, check the patient is neither too hot nor too cold, administer drugs at midnight or through the night… Or maybe you, the owner, have to take your pet to the out-of-hours veterinary service if they’re ill at night and then have to take them back to the day-time practice to carry on the treatment once the night-care practice shuts its doors. While the quality of care I’m sure is first class in all events, there are obvious hassles here. Just to be humorous for a moment, how would you like it if you were rooted out from a bed in, say, Falmouth Hospital, transported by a relative to Treliske for an overnight stay, and then driven back to Falmouth the following morning, again by your long-suffering relative, just as you were about to tuck into your breakfast, and all with a drip stuck in your arm? And for several days on the trot?!! Diary for December • Climbing roses can now be pruned. Cut out diseased or damaged growth, tie in any new shoots and cut back old flowering side shoots to about one third of their length. • Leave old flower heads on Hydrangeas. They will help to protect the new buds from frost damage • Collect up any remaining fallen leaves • Check climber supports are sound and that the plants are tied in properly
to help prevent wind damage • Plant some winter flowering shrubs to give some colour and fragrance to the garden Sarcococca confusa, Lonicera Fragrantissima and Winter Jasmine to name a few • Remove yellow leaves from winter brassicas. They are no help to the plant but may harbour diseases • Dig a bean trench ready for next year’s Runner Beans. Line the trench with
newspaper, this helps to retain moisture and will rot away, and throw in all your compostable kitchen waste (not cooked food) over the next month or so. Cover it over with the soil you dug out. Put a marker cane in each corner so you know exactly where the trench is. Beans are hungry and thirsty plants so this will help them along. • Apple and Pear trees need pruning in the winter so this job can be done. Don’t

The test results showed that significant increases in braking distance began to appear when the tyre was worn down to 3mm. Although the legal minimum UK tread depth is only 1.6mm, this new research showed that tyres with a 3mm tread had a 25% better performance than those at 1.6mm in wet conditions. In terms of braking distance this represents an extra 8 metres (25ft). In one test, where a new tyre with a tread depth of 8mm was compared to one with only 1.6mm the braking distance increased by 13 metres (42.25ft) – the equivalent to double the length of a typical living room.
