In the Garden Diary for October
At the nursery we have had a very good spring and summer season but now the cold weather is approaching it is time to start thinking about autumn and winter. We have hundreds of ornamental trees of various sizes in stock and bare root Cornish and national fruit trees will be ready late November
• There is still time to plant daffodil and other spring flowering bulbs to give an early splash of colour next year. • If your pots and containers are looking past their best refresh them with some autumn bedding • October is a great month for planting new hedging • Prune climbing and rambling Roses and tie in the stems to prevent wind damage over the next few months • Keep on top of clearing leaves. This will help to prevent diseases like black spot on Roses and dead

3tbsp olive oil 4 red onions, each half cut into three wedges 2 garlic cloves, chopped 250g (9oz) button mushrooms 1.4kg (3lb 3oz) stewing beef, eg shin, cut into large cubes 40g (¼oz) flour 500ml (18fl oz) brown ale, such as Caffrey’s 150ml (¼pt) beef stock 2 bay leaves 3 thyme sprigs 2tbsp bramble or redcurrant jelly 2 x 90g tins smoked oysters, drained 500g (1lb 2oz) block puff pastry (we love Jus-Rol all butter) 1 egg, beaten

Place the pie in the fridge for 20 minutes, then bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown and the filling is bubbling hot.

he first-ever Cornwall Live EDGE Awards – Excellent in Digital, Gadgetry and Entrepreneurialism – recently launched in association with Cornwall Growth and Skills Hub to celebrate the tech sector in Cornwall.
Cornwall’s tech industry is thriving. It is doing so well that it has grown by 31% in the last 12 months alone and is continuing to grow and create jobs. According to some of the biggest players in the County's tech sector, there is a continual shortage of skilled programmers and coders – but not of raw talent. It's great to see the government's massive investment in high quality apprenticeships which benefits people of all ages being taken up by local firms and education providers, as well as the EU funding that I helped to ensure Cornwall would continue to receive post Brexit which is reaching growing local businesses. So, what's happening in schools and colleges to get young people interested in technology? The Skills Hub has been developed as a new signposting service that offers businesses a free skills review and then matches them with the right skills and training provision, helping them develop their staff and grow their business at the same time. But the training needs to start in schools and there's a huge amount of work being done to ensure schools and colleges are getting young people involved in tech and to make coding fun and interesting.

Tech firms big and small, primary and secondary schools and higher and further education providers in the county are working hand in hand to excite young people about technology, and to make programming accessible and fun. Truro and Penwith College recently launched its Software Developer Apprenticeship to give budding computer coders an opportunity to realise their dream, albeit based on the real needs of local tech companies and employers. Firms currently working with the College to recruit the first group of apprentices have included Cornwall Council, Bluefruit, Gendall Design, Hertzian, Affinity Digital, Imprimus Plc and Bespoke IT. Cornwall College is also doing its bit to nurture home-grown tech talents in Cornwall and to encourage young people to consider a career in gaming or software programming. It too has teamed up with Poolbased Bluefruit to launch its I Am Digital programme and Digital Academy, to help students earn their Technical Baccalaureate while working on real projects. Software Cornwall, a not-for-profit organisation set up to bring the industry together, Code Clubs in schools, programming Jams with

teenagers and up-to-date IT courses that match the industry’s constantly evolving needs, are among the educational steps put in place in Cornwall to overcome any future IT skills shortage. Code Clubs are supported by volunteers from the Cornish software industry who provide a one-hour session every week building and extending the schools ICT curriculum. King Charles Primary has a code club and Falmouth Primary is setting one up. In the same vein, and to further career opportunities in the IT sector among Cornwall’s teens, local volunteers set up and run monthly Tech Jams events which are held usually on the second Saturday of the month. Falmouth University’s academic departments, especially its Games Academy, are also doing outreach work in schools to develop aspiration and engagement with higher education - the idea being that it can entice young people into the industry through gaming. Meanwhile the University’s £12m EU-funded Launchpad programme is the extension of its work in schools. Within three years, Launchpad is expected to create 128 new jobs and 32 companies based in Cornwall, all in knowledge-intensive fields. Launchpad is a masters and business incubation programme which reverses the traditional start-up model; it creates new companies in direct response to an identified industry demand. Instead of starting with an entrepreneur and their idea, Launchpad begins with the customer and their business challenge. Global companies including Hitachi, Amazon, Sony Interactive Entertainment and the BBC pitch a challenge to Launchpad students - a request for something they want developed, but don’t have the expertise or capacity to tackle in-house. Graduates with complementary skills then tackle the industry requirement and a high-growth start-up is developed around the solution. FOREIGN BODIES IN DOGS It never fails to amaze me just what dogs will

If the dog has been vomiting for a day or two and there definitely is something in the guts, the only thing to do is to remove it surgically. DIAGNOSIS Sometimes an owner will bring in their dog asking us to check them out as they have seen them eating something they shouldn’t – this frequently goes for children’s toys – and / or a dog is presented to us that has been vomiting for a day or two, and a foreign body is suspected.
Then we can give a full general anaesthetic and do a laparotomy – opening up the abdomen – identifying the piece of gut where the obstruction is lodged, and then cutting into the gut to take out the offending article. Very occasionally the piece of bowel where the bone / Lego / marble has lodged is starting to decay, so that too has to be removed and the two ends of the gut sutured together.
Once the ‘thing’ has been swallowed, then very occasionally it can lodge in the gullet, but this is extremely uncomfortable for the dog, as you might think, and we see these cases very soon after the incident has happened. Much more often the foreign body goes into the stomach, and can either stay there, or else the powerful contractions of the stomach wall drive

The inspection found that extremely high priority is given to children's welfare. The
management team takes the initiative, working closely with parents and professionals to arrange highly effective support for children and their families. They work closely and highly effectively to provide children with consistent experiences, especially at times of stress. This enables children to continue to flourish and learn. Partnerships between staff and parents are very strong. An extremely high proportion of parents contribute very successfully to their children's learning records. They share detailed information about their children's activities and achievements. Parents and staff build on children's experiences and support all children in making very strong progress from their starting points. Staff know the children extremely well. They quickly identify children in need of additional help, and very rapid interventions ensure children progress extremely well. Staff work very successfully with other professionals to meet children's needs.
The highly dedicated management team is ambitious and has extremely high expectations of its staff. It actively enables staff to attend training, and encourages them to share and put their knowledge and expertise into practice. All staff contribute ideas about future improvements, enabling the management team to draw up and monitor a detailed action plan to provide an extremely high quality provision. almouth Oyster Festival will be celebrating its 21st year this October! From October 12 to 15, the festival will welcome thousands of visitors to enjoy a packed programme of cookery demonstrations, live music and freshly shucked oysters. The four day festival is packed with cookery demonstrations by leading local chefs, there are oysters, seafood, wine and local ale to sample along with children’s shell painting, entertainment in the form of sea shanties, a town parade, live music, an oyster shucking competition, a Falmouth Working Boat race and marquees brimming with Cornish produce. The festival is a must for all oyster, seafood and maritime heritage enthusiasts! High profile names including Rick Stein, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Clarissa Dickson Wright, Antonio Carluccio, Aldo
Zilli, John Burton Race, Valentine Warner and Sophie Grigson, have entertained cooking enthusiasts over the years. Well known personalities and local Michelin Star chefs including Pete Goss, Nathan Outlaw, Ben Tunnicliffe and Chris Eden, have all added to the programme too.
