Moroccan pro a big hitter for Arab women SIPHILISELWE MAKHANYA WHEN Moroccan golfer Maha Haddioui swings her club, it is not only for the glory of the game but also for that of her country and its women. The world’s first Muslim professional golfer visited the country this week to compete in the 2013 South African Women’s Open at KwaZulu-Natal’s Southbroom Golf Club. The tournament brought together golfers from 27 countries. It began on Friday and ends today. The 24-year-old has been playing golf since the age of 13 and is in the country for the first time. “I’m really happy to be here. I’m really impressed by how hospitable everyone is and how much culture there is.” Haddioui said she considered her visit as a chance to learn about other cultures and to teach her own. “Being from an Arab country and being an Arab woman, we have a lot of media exposure. “I’ve made it my responsibility to show another side of Arab women — by being on tour and being independent. “I have never really received comments about what I wear on the golf course because

Morocco is very open-minded.” She said she tried to “give the best image” of her country and culture, but “I’m focussed on my game and on being just like any other golfer”. Other golfers in the SA Open included former Ladies European Tour Order of Merit champions Lee-Anne Pace and Gwladys Nocera; multiple winners Becky Brewerton and Trish Johnson, as well as Tiger Woods’s niece, Cheyenne Woods. “Most of the players on this tour are already stars. They are very good golfers and inspiring women. “I have huge respect for all of them. But if I were to say a name, it would be [Scottish golfer] Carly Booth. I like her attitude, her swing and the image she projects. She’s young and she’s won a few tournaments. That’s something I aspire to.”

SOUTH African Indians will soon be able to tap into a global network designed to connect them with their roots and to fellow Indians from the globe. The Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) International is to be officially launched in Durban on Sunday. The organisation’s Durban president, Sudesh Maharaj, said the local chapter was long overdue. “There has always been a need to get the largest concentration of Indians outside India to be a part of GOPIO. “It will give us a chance to share our experiences across the globe,” he said. The organisation was founded in New York, 24 years ago and currently has chapters in 18 countries. The South African chapter has been in the making since 2010 and was unofficially launched in October. A Johannesburg chapter may be formed in “about two, three years’ time”. Maharaj said his organisation is involved in a number of communityoriented projects.
One project focuses on steering youth away from social ills such as drug abuse towards entrepreneurship. The organisation will facilitate relationships between locals and their global counterparts in the fields culture, academia and business. Maharaj said the organisation “can rally a lot of support for efforts started by government”. “It’s important to understand that the organisation will not just benefit Indian people, but also the communities in which they live.” Those expected to attend the launch include India’s Ministry of Overseas Affairs Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi; Durban Indian consul general Vinod Sharma; SA High Commissioner for India Virendra Gupta; and local businessmen Vivian Reddy and Ishwar Mangaroo. Several high-ranking South African government officials have been invited. GOPIO membership costs R150 a year and is open to all South Africans associated with India because “what’s happening now is that we have a lot of mixed marriages”.
