When the season of joy becomes the loneliest time of the year

CHRISTMAS arrives each year wrapped in expectation - lights in the streets, full tables, busy homes and well-worn traditions. It is spoken of as a season of joy and merriment, a time when families gather and the world feels warmer. Yet for many, Christmas feels anything but joyful. For some people, this will be their first Christmas without a child. For others, it will be the first without a lifelong partner, a business, a home, or the stability that once anchored their lives. The absence is not subtle. It is loud. It fills rooms, memories and long winter evenings. Loneliness at Christmas is not simply about being alone. It is about feeling displaced - unsure of where you fit in a world that seems to have continued without you. It is about disorientation, fear and grief quietly co-existing beneath the noise of celebration. For some, the urge is not to join in, but to retreat, to hide away from reminders of what has been lost. This is why the festive season can become a time when people feel invisible. When worth is questioned. When relevance feels uncertain. The unspoken thought - what is the point? - can creep in, unnoticed by those who are surrounded

matter - that they are seen, valued and still a part of the world around them. Sometimes, the greatest gift is not something wrapped, but the reassurance that someone belongs. As this Christmas unfolds, wherever it finds you, we hope it brings warmth, meaning and moments worth holding onto. And for those carrying loss, uncertainty or loneliness, we hope they are met with kindness that reminds them they are not alone. by noise and company. And yet, meaning at Christmas has never truly come from excess. It does not live in overflowing fridges, overfilled cupboards or tables groaning under food that will never be eaten. Around us, in our streets and towns, there are people who are hungry - people who would welcome what we so easily discard.

The true value of Christmas has always been human connection. It is found in moments of inclusion, in kindness offered quietly, and in making space for someone who might otherwise feel forgotten. These gestures may appear small, but they carry immense weight for those who feel adrift. Christmas has the power to remind people that they
