The Christmas many people don’t talk about When the season of joy becomes the loneliest time of the year
CHRISTMAS arrives each year wrapped in expectation - lights in the streets, full tables, busy homes and well-worn traditions. It is spoken of as a season of joy and merriment, a time when families gather and the world feels warmer. Yet for many, Christmas feels anything but joyful. For some people, this will be their first Christmas without a child. For others, it will be the first without a lifelong partner, a business, a home, or the stability that once anchored their lives. The absence is not subtle. It is loud. It fills rooms, memories and long winter evenings. Loneliness at Christmas is not simply about being alone. It is about feeling displaced - unsure of where you fit in a world that seems to have continued without you. It is about disorientation, fear and grief quietly co-existing beneath the noise of celebration. For some, the urge is not to join in, but to retreat, to hide away from reminders of
what has been lost. This is why the festive season can become a time when people feel invisible. When worth is questioned. When relevance feels uncertain. The unspoken thought - what is the point? - can creep in, unnoticed by those who are surrounded by noise and company. And yet, meaning at Christmas has never truly come from excess. It does
not live in overflowing fridges, overfilled cupboards or tables groaning under food that will never be eaten. Around us, in our streets and towns, there are people who are hungry - people who would welcome what we so easily discard. The true value of Christmas has always been human connection. It is found in moments of inclusion, in kindness offered quiet-
ly, and in making space for someone who might otherwise feel forgotten. These gestures may appear small, but they carry immense weight for those who feel adrift. Christmas has the power to remind people that they matter - that they are seen, valued and still a part of the world around them. Sometimes, the greatest gift is not something wrapped, but the reassurance that someone belongs. As this Christmas unfolds, wherever it finds you, we hope it brings warmth, meaning and moments worth holding onto. And for those carrying loss, uncertainty or loneliness, we hope they are met with kindness that reminds them they are not alone.

THE National Christmas Lottery in Spain, celebrated on Monday, December 22, was bigger and more exciting than ever before. The Malaga coastline had its luckiest year on record, and there, Torre del Mar was blessed with wins. With the ticket number 90693, shared between residents of Torre del Mar and El Morche, each holder of a décimo (tenth of a full ticket) carried home €50,000 each. Calle Angustias 10 in Torre del Mar were where the tickets were sold, bringing luck and joy just in time for Christmas. As well, Torrox won big with 90693, also with tickets worth €50,000. Other towns along the coast to receive a sprinkle of good fortune included Motril with ticket 25508, worth €20,000, and Almuñecar with 78477, worth €20,000. For those who didn’t get a big prize this time, the El Niño lottery is on January 6. Best of

White Christmas ANDALUCIA has pulled out all the stops for Christmas 2025, delivering what may be the most photogenic festive scene in decades. Picture-perfect palm trees swaying gently along the Costa Tropical and Axarquia coastlines, with a dramatic backdrop of snow-coated mountains gleaming under December sunshine – it’s the kind of view that makes expatriates reach for phones and instantly caption: “Sorry, can’t talk, living in a Costa Christmas card.” A powerful blast of polar air swept in recently, blanketing the high peaks of Sierra de las Nieves, the majestic Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, and totally covering Maroma mountain with its first proper snowfall of the winter. Nearby mountains appear under thick white duvets, creating postcard views that can be admired from Nerja balconies, Almuñecar beaches and even parts of the Malaga capital. Temperatures have plunged accordingly: coastal thermometers may read double figures, but that terral wind blowing cold air straight off the snowy interior means Christmas jumpers, scarves and gloves are definitely not optional this Christmas week. The good news? There’s still time to build a proper snowman on Christmas Day. Head up to the higher car parks and accessible areas of La Maroma or the Sierra Nevada-style slopes near Puerto de la Zafarraya – both offer safe, family-friendly snow play if the forecast holds. Just wrap up extra warm and enjoy what is, without doubt, one of the most magical Mediterranean Christmas scenes in living memory. Credit: F. StarGrie FB
