Man caught drink driving twice in one month

by Tahnee Wright The LOCaL POLiCe of San Miguel de Salinas has stopped a driver twice in one month for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The British man has caused accidents with injuries on each occasion.

The most recent occasion occurred last Thursday on avenida de Levante on the Balcon urbanisation as the driver took a right turn and collided with a motorbike.

The motorbike was correctly stopped at the stop sign and the couple riding fell to the ground as the car hit them.

The motorbike became entangled with the front bumper of the car and the driver drove erratically trying to disentangle the motorbike so he could flee the scene. in doing so, he dragged both the motorbike and the two riders across the road and when successfully disentangled, he fled leaving the victims laying there.

Local Police officers arrived at the scene and helped the victims.

They later found the escaped driver hiding in a house on the Balcon urbanisation. he was arrested and brought to justice. in the prior accident whilst driving under the influence of alcohol, he hit a Guardia Civil car that was stopped at traffic lights, causing injuries to the officers inside the car.

Statistics rank Torrevieja Spain’s ‘poorest city’

by Tahnee Wright The InsTITuTo nacIonal de esTadísTIca (Ine) released figures from its study of urban Indicators 2017 recently, ranking Torrevieja as spain’s ‘poorest city’ amongst 126 others.

The study shows the average net income across homes in Torrevieja to be an annual €14,462, nearly €50,000 less than in Pozeulo de alarcon, Madrid, where an annual €73,014 was reported.

The city of Torrevieja have slammed the figures, which, for example, do not include the large number of expatriates receiving pensions from their home countries.

In 2013, Torrevieja came last again.

In 2014, its average net income rose by nearly €500 but this was no way near enough to rival the penultimate city, sanlucar de Barrameda, with an average net income of €17,222.

Torrevieja continues to rank as spain’s ‘poorest city’ despite more cities being including in the index this year in comparison to last year’s 109 cities. accoring to the Ine, a body belonging to the Ministry of economy, the other two cities with the highest revenue, besides Pozuelo de alarcon are Majadahonda - €57,623 and sant cugat del Valles, Barcelona - €53,767. While Fuengirola - €18,225 and sanlucar de Barrameda €17,222) along with Torrevieja are the three cities with the lowest average net income.

The seven cities with the lowest estimated unemployment rate in 2016 are among the ten with the highest revenue: Pozuelo de alarcon (8 per cent), sant cugat del Valles (8.9 per cent), san sebastian (9.2 per cent), las Rozas (9.2 per cent), Majadahonda (9.7 per cent), Getxo (10.2 per cent) and Barcelona (12.5 per cent).

Brit stabbing fugitive behind bars

by Andy Mansell The fifTy-Three-year old British man at the centre of a five day Guardia Civil manhunt between Orihuela and Benidorm, has been jailed without bail.

Benidorm Police arrested David Grundy after being alerted by a fellow Brit who had seen him drinking in a bar and contacted authorities. he had recognised the fugitive from his photograph, which had received widespread circulation throughout the local media.

The local police officers apprehended Grundy around 03.30h last Sunday, when he returned to a car he had been sleeping in, parked outside the aparthotel Bermudas in the rincon de Loix area of the town. he was wanted in connection with the stabbing of his partner at their home in Orihuela Costa last week.

The fugitive was pinned to the ground by the officers, with his trousers by his knees as they checked for weapons, before handcuffing him. his attempts to evade justice came to a humiliating end as he was pictured face-down on the pavement with his boxer shorts showing.

The 53-year-old, from Bolton, looked bleary-eyed and sunburnt after officers sat him in the car he had been using while waiting for a police van to take him away. inside the vehicle, which belonged to neighbours of the fugitive, whose house he was looking after, the officers discovered clothes and 4600 euros in cash, which they believe he

intended to use to leave the country. he was later taken to the Guardia Civil station in Pilar de la horadada after being detained by the Benidorm local police. he had been missing since his partner, Nicola anne Walker houghton, was found with a knife embedded in her back at the home they shared in Orihuela. her daughter alerted police and paramedics after finding her mum lying on the floor with the large kitchen knife plunged into her back.

The victim, is still in hospital, in a condition described as ‘serious but stable’, after an operation to remove the weapon from her lower back. expat Grundy, who worked as a taxi driver and gardener, is understood to have been arrested as he returned to the stolen car. appearing in court in Orihuela, last Thursday, Grundy received a pre-trial sentence of homicide with gender assault and was detained in jail, without bail pending trial.

15-month-old baby bitten in face by labrador

by Tahnee Wright A dog attacked a 15-month-old baby in Alcantrilla last Saturday night.

At around 11.00pm, the baby’s parents sat down to dinner at their friend’s house and the baby played on the floor nearby with the dog – a Labrador and not classified as a dangerous breed.

Jhon guarnizo Campoverde, the baby’s father told the Spanish press: ‘The dog belongs to my friends and has always been very docile, we have visited my friends at their home on numerous occasions and my child has always played with the dog without any trouble at all’.

He continued: ‘We do not know what happened, my son was sitting next to the dog when it bit him’.

‘We saw the dog jump on him and bite him. We were in shock’.

‘My friend quickly pushed the dog away’.

The father called an ambulance but in the seriousness of the situation, a neighbour took the family to the Alcantarilla-Casco Health Centre.

The baby suffered two bites on his right cheek and many wounds on his left, along with a small nose bone breakage.

The National Police have opened an investigation to clarify exactly what happened.

The baby’s father said: ‘My friends do not know what to do with their dog because they have two children and the dog has never attacked them’.

Labradors are not classed as a dangerus breed

More immigrants Lorca students rescued off Cartagena sent home early ElEvEn morE immigrants, including three children, were rescued by coastguards off the shores of Cartagena last Wednesday.

All of them in were in apparent good health apart from one, who showed signs of heat exposure and exhaustion.

The eleven immigrants, all of them maghreb and three under age, were picked up two miles off the coast of Cartagena.

This was one of several interceptions over the last week and a half, where all of the occupants of the craft survived their ordeal.

However last week, the coastguard received a call from a merchant ship, Baltic Wave, which had sighted a small patera boat drifting around 90 miles offshore from Cartagena.

All the five occupants aboard were found dead when coastguards from the red Cross found the drifting boat.

The reasons for the fatalities are unknown, but authorities have reason to believe that the cause of death was severe heat exposure caused by the recent extreme hot weather.

Almost hAlf of the students of the madre de Dios de las mercedarias school in lorca left early on monday due to the heatwave. the wearing of uniform has become non-compulsory, the school sending letters to parents requesting they dress their children in ‘appropriate clothing given the temperatures we are experiencing’.

Principal Dolores lora-Villar leones said the measure has been gratefully adopted: ‘Almost all of the students have opted not to wear their uniforms and wear fresher clothes’. she added: ‘our priority at all times is to ensure the comfort of the students which retaining as much normality as possible’.

Mafia murder in Aguilas

by Andy Mansell An ItAlIAn man, believed to have links to the Italian mafia, murdered last week, by three hooded gunman in Aguilas, was not living here by chance.

Franco Roberti, chief prosecutor of the national Anti-Mafia (DnA) of Italy, in an interview with the El País newspaper, issued a stark warning that the criminal organisation to which the murdered man allegedly belonged is very well established in Spain.

“A character like Giuseppe nirta was not here by chance, definitely not, he was here cultivating his interests" suggested the prosecutor.

Details of the fatality surfaced at around 10.00pm on Sunday two weeks ago, when police were called to a house in the remote neighbourhood of El Charcon, near to Aguilas. the emergency call was made by the partner of Guiseppi nirta, a fifty two year old, Italian who according to media reports in his home country, had a history of drug trafficking.

On arriving at the premises, police discovered the body of nirta, on the ground, with at least seven bullet wounds, including one to the head, as if to “Finish him off!”, said an unconfirmed police report.

Italian media reports suggested that Giuseppe nirta had a history of drug trafficking and was involved in the so-called 'Operation Minotaur', related to the ‘ndrangheta gang.

Roberti believes that the presence of nirta on the coast of Murcia was far from casual and, on the contrary would be dedicated to expanding internationally the influence of

the ndrangheta gang , the "most dangerous and richest" criminal organization in Italy.

“With lucrative business in the world of drug and human trafficking, extortion and contract killings, the wealth of the ndrangheta is incalculable," said Roberti, adding that, “they would be in the region of tens of billions of euros a year, which then they are obliged to reinvest."

He explained that Spain is a strategic territory for the 'ndrangheta' and the rest of the criminal organisations originating in Italy, because it’s location acts as a bridge between the American and African continents and Europe.

“Spain is an almost obligatory place as a passage for cocaine and hashish”, he said, “with great possibilities for money laundering.”

"It's a place to colonise," he summed up, and Giuseppe nirta would have been acting as a settler.

He believed the murder was “a struggle between two gangs to control the territory and business of the ndrangheta," the deceased was also thought to be related to Giuseppe nirta, one of the capos of the Calabrian mafia, and according to Italian media sources, Head of the ‘ndrangheta clan and one of the most wanted criminals in Italy, until his arrest in 2008.

A BBC report at the time of his arrest, suggested in 2008, the 'ndrangheta made nearly $70bn (45bn euros) a year, the equivalent of 3% of Italy's gross national product, from its criminal activities, which include extortion rackets, people smuggling and money laundering.

Firefighters abseil to rescue 77-year-old woman A 77-yeAr-old woman was rescued from her apartment in Torrevieja earlier this week as firefighters abseiled down the side of her building and gained entry through a window.

The woman, who had suffered heatstroke, did not respond when firefighters called for her to open the front door of her apartment on Calle Jose Hurtado in the city centre, which was locked with the key in it.

Before forcing entry – a measure which often requires judicial authorisation and also causes damage, the emergency service always consider other options.

In this case, firefighters from the Vega Sur park opted to access the apartment through a window from the inner courtyard.

Once they gained entry, an ambulance took the woman straight to the University Hospital of Torrevieja.

64 killed in Portugal forest fire

by Tahnee Wright More than 1,000 firefighters finally extinguished the deadliest forest fire in Portugal's recent history on Wednesday, though blazes persisted in nearby central and other areas of the country. the main fire, which erupted last Saturday and spread with breath-taking speed, killed 64 people as they tried to flee in cars or were engulfed in flames in remote villages in a hilly region about 200 kilometres northeast of Lisbon.

More than 150 people have been injured.

Portuguese Prime Minister antonio Costa visited the affected area in Pedrogao Grande, the mountainous region about 200 kilometres northeast of Lisbon last Sunday, calling it the ‘biggest human tragedy in Portugal in living memory’.

Police said a lightning strike on a tree probably caused the blaze on Saturday in a region hit by an intense heat wave and dry, gusty winds, which fanned the flames.

But investigators said on Wednesday they would question the head of the country's volunteer firefighters, Jaime Marta Soares, who has said he suspects the fire had ‘criminal origins.’ the prime minister said the emergency services acted as fast as they could but acknowledged that efforts to alert the population might have been hindered because the blaze had ruined phone lines and communications towers.

‘What happened was cables and communications towers were destroyed by the fire, even their first replacements melted,’ he said. ‘But nothing compromised the firefighting efforts.’ the government declared three days of mourning and sent two army battalions to help the emergency services. the european Union said it would provide firefighting aircraft. France has offered three planes and Spain has sent

two, authorities said.

Speaking in the Vatican, Pope Francis, who visited Portugal last month, mentioned the victims in his weekly address.

‘I am close to the dear people of Portugal, hit by a devastating fire which is raging in the forests around Pedrogao Grande, causing many victims and injuries. Let us pray in silence,’ he said.

French President emmanuel Macron tweeted: ‘Solidarity with Portugal, hit by terrible fires. our thoughts are with victims. France makes its aid available to Portugal’.

President Marcelo rebelo de Sousa visited the site at night and expressed his condolences. he said that ‘it was not possible to do more than what has been done’ in prevention and

responding to the fire.

Some local residents said they had been left without firefighters for hours as their homes burnt. Many blamed poor forestry reserve planning and depopulation of remote villages that left many wooded areas untended. according to data from the european Forest Fire Information System, more than 40,000 hectares of Portugese forest has burnt, far more than the average of just under 10,000 hectares burnt by this time of the year during 2008-16.

With weather forecasters predicting an unusually hot summer, authorities are concerned that there could be many more blazes during July and august when typically the biggest fires strike.

Van driver killed in crash caused by migrants' barrier in Calais

Av vAn vA n driver was killed in a crash caused by a makeshift barrier set up by migrants on a French motorway near the Channel port of Calais in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The van crashed into one of two lorries that had been stopped by the barrier at around 3.45am near Guemps, 12 kilometres east of Calais.

The van, registered in Poland, burst into flames. nine Eritreans were found in one of the lorries and taken into police custody, questioned on suspicion of manslaughter.

Roadblocks, often built from tyres or rocks, were regularly placed on the A16 motorway leading to the port of Calais before the ‘Jungle’ camp was dismantled in October. Migrants aimed to slow lorries down as they approached the port in the hope of climbing on board.

Since the end of May, the practice has become common again.

Several hundred migrants are living in the Calais area in poor conditions. Some 7,000 had lived at the Jungle camp before it was dismantled.

Interior Minister Gérard Collomb announced at the beginning of the month that an extra 150 police and gendarmes would be sent to the area.

Thousands protest in Madrid for refugees

by Tahnee Wright Several thouSand people marched in Madrid last weekend to demand that the Spanish government immediately fulfils its commitment to take in more than 17,000 refugees as part of a european relocation plan. the crowds chanted, ‘no human being is illegal’, as they walked in scorching heat through the centre of the capital, holding banners that read, ‘open the borders’, ‘Bridges, not walls’ and ‘enough with excuses, no more barriers’. last Saturday’s protest, organised by dozens of nGos, including uK-based rights group amnesty International, came just a few days before World ref-

ugee day was celebrated on tuesday. organisers, quoted by the Spanish press, said some 8,000-people attended the demonstration. the protest also comes as the deadline nears to relocate 160,000 refugees across europe under a solidarity plan put in place in 2015 to try to remedy the continent's biggest-ever refugee crisis and ease the burden on front-line states Italy and Greece. however, by the start of June, fewer than 20,000 refugees had been relocated.

Spain had pledged to take in more than 17,300 and has so far only welcomed just over 1,300, according to amnesty International.

‘Spain is doing absolutely nothing of what it should be doing, it's a disgrace for Spain and europe,’ Carlos diez, a 55-

year-old secondary school teacher at the protest, told the Spanish press. estrella Moran, secretary-general of the Spain Commission for refugee assistance (Cear), said the period for the first arrivals ends next month, while the second period will run until September 26. ‘at the moment only 7.5 per cent of these persons have been accommodated,’ Moran told the associated Press news agency. ‘there are people in Greece who are living in inhumane conditions and unhealthy situations, there are people in turkey, in lebanon and Palestine who deserve a new life.’

In February, at least 160,000 people marched in Barcelona to demand the Spanish government fulfil its commitment to refugees.

Mourinho accused of €3.3m tax fraud in Spain

SpaniSh proSecutorS have had filed a claim against Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on two counts of tax fraud in 2011 and 2012, when he managed Real Madrid.

The Portuguese manager owes Spanish tax authorities €3.3 million, a Madrid prosecutor said in a statement on Tuesday, adding it had presented a claim to a local court.

The announcement comes just a week after Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo had a lawsuit filed against him for allegedly defrauding Spanish authorities of €14.7 million in unpaid taxes between 2011 and 2014.

Mourinho left Real Madrid in 2013 to manage English club Chelsea for a second spell before signing with Manchester United in 2016.

Prosecutors said he had failed to declare revenues from his image rights in his Spanish income tax declarations from 2011 and 2012, ‘with the aim of obtaining illicit profits’.

They said Mourinho had already settled a previous claim relating to his Spanish taxes, which resulted in a penalty of €1.15 million in 2014.

But tax authorities later found that some of the information presented in that settlement was incorrect, the prosecutors said.

Student held prisoner in North Korea dies days after release An AmericAn university student held prisoner in north Korea for 17 months died on monday, just days after he was released from captivity in a coma.

Otto Warmbier, 22, who was arrested in north Korea while visiting as a tourist, had been described by doctors caring for him last week as having extensive brain damage that left him in a state of ‘unresponsive wakefulness.’

‘Unfortunately, the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the north Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today,’ the family said in a statement after Warmbier's death.

The family said that Warmbier lapsed into a coma in march 2016, shortly after he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour in north Korea.

The University of Virginia student and Ohio native was arrested, according to north Korean media, for trying to steal an item bearing a propaganda slogan. north Korea released Warmbier last week and said he was being freed ‘on humanitarian grounds’.

Warmbiers father said last week that his son had been 'brutalised and terrorised by the Pyongyang government’ and that the family did not believe north Korea's story that his son had fallen into a coma after contracting botulism and being given a sleeping pill. Doctors who examined Warmbier after his release said there was no sign of botulism in his system.

Secretary of State rex Tillerson said the United States holds north Korea accountable for Warmbier's ‘unjust imprisonment’ and demanded the release of three other U.S. citizens still held by Pyongyang - Korean-Americans Tony Kim, Kim Dong chul and Kim Hak Song.

European court rules against Russian ‘gay propaganda’ law

by Tahnee Wright The european Court of human rights (eCthr) ruled on Tuesday that a russian law banning the promotion of homosexuality breaches european treaty rules on freedom of expression and is discriminatory against gay people.

Three russian gay rights activists brought the case against the 2013 federal statute, widely known as the ‘gay propaganda’ law, after they were fined for holding banners to encourage acceptance of homosexuality between 2009 and 2012. human rights observers argue that this law has been broadly applied to target and intimidate the LGBT community in russia. The eCthr concurred, arguing that its vague terminology allowed unlimited scope for abuse.

The european Court of human rights was established by the european Convention on human rights - (formally the Convention for the protection of human rights and Fundamental Freedoms) an international treaty drafted by the Council of europe to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms in europe. any person who feels his or her rights have been violated under the Convention by a state party can take a case to the Court. Judgments finding violations are binding on the States concerned and they are obliged to execute them. russia has had a strained relationship with the eCthr since they overruled a case decided by the russian Constitutional Court in 2012. In 2016, the eCthr ruled russia had violated the european Convention on human rights in all but six of its 228 judgments in russian cases.

Prince Philip in hospital Prince PhiliP, the 96-year-old Duke of edinburgh was admitted to hospital on Tuesday evening with an infection, missing the formal opening of parliament on Wednesday but he remains in good spirits, Buckingham Palace said in a statement: ‘The Duke of edinburgh was admitted to King edward Vii hospital in london last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition’.

‘Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and royal Ascot’.

The queen, the world's longest-reigning living monarch, celebrated her 91st birthday in April. She was accompanied in parliament by her son, Prince charles, who is heir to the throne.

The exTreme heatwave bringing record temperatures to the UK and much of europe, shows no signs of abating in Spain.

by Andy Mansell TemperaTures in seville hit the mid 40’s earlier this week and a swathe of provinces are on red alert for high temperatures. a total of 32 provinces are on alert, with an added risk of heavy rain, storms and flooding expected in some areas.

High temperatures in the centre of the country and the eastern provinces, have caused some school closures and caused office workers to down tools. an amber alert has been activated in Córdoba and Badajoz, where highs of 41ºC and 38ºC respectively are forecast.

The provinces of Granada, Jaén, sevilla, Huesca, Zaragoza, albacete, Guadalajara, Cantabria, Cuenca, Ciudad real, Toledo, Ávila, León, palencia, salamanca, Valladolid, Zamora, madrid, navarra, Cáceres, Lugo, Orense, La rioja, Vizcaya, Gipúzcoa y asturias are on yellow alert for high temperatures.

The state meteorological agency (aemeT) has forecast temperatures considerably higher than the average for this time of year along the coastline of Cantabria and Catalonia and much of the peninsula. as a result of the sudden increase in temperatures ,health recommendations to the most vulnerable groups, especially

older people, the chronically ill, young children and the socially isolated , plus those who work in environments exposed to heat and children have been activated. people are advised to avoid going outdoors in the hottest hours of the day, it is also recommended to wear baggy, light and light coloured clothing and protect the head with a cap or hat.

at home it is advisable to close the blinds and lower the awnings on the facades exposed to the sun and relocate to the cooler areas of the house.

Man arrested in Madrid wearing a body belt

by Andy Mansell LocaL poLice officers from the Salamanca district of Madrid apprehended a man suspected of planning a terror attack by wearing an explosive body belt.

The officers were called by a medic, who was attending to the forty two year old man, as he had fallen to the ground through extreme drunkenness and noticed suspicious lumps underneath his clothing.

The officers noticed that there were several large packages stuck together with duct tape around his torso, so immediately cordoned off the area creating a security perimeter.

after evacuating the immediate vicinity, the officers called for dog handlers from the National police.

The sniffer dogs could not detect any explosive material, battery or wiring was detected, so the officers proceeded to inspect the packages.

Wrapped around the man’s waist were in fact plastic packages, each filled with 6000 euros of notes. The police recovered a total of 185,000 euros of legal tender from the body of the man. in Spain, there is a legal duty to declare transactions involving 10,000 euros or more, so the officers arrested the man for non-declaration.

Terminally ill man finds home for his ‘best friend’ A terminAlly ill man from Asturias found a new home for his beloved dog in two days, after placing an advert in a Spanish newspaper. the advert placed in la nueva espana newspaper said that his name was Josin lazcano and he needed urgent help, "I am dying and I want to find a new family for my best friend, my dog Trasgu, because i do not want to leave him in the kennels."

He went on to announce that it was a quick introduction as he had no time to lose.

His story in the newspaper last October, made such an impression that in two days he found a new family for his faithful four-legged companion.

Before leaving him with his new family, he said goodbye to his friend, "i told him to always remember the secret that remains between him and me, because i will always remember him" said Josin.

Antonia morales, the new owner chosen by Josin, is from lorca and has lived in the Asturian town of lugo de llanera since 1994.

She has a small child of 6 years and always had dogs at home , but when the last one died in January 2016 she was so upset she decided not to get a new dog.

However, after reading the story of Josin at that time, she did not hesitate. "When i saw the photo in the newspaper i said, this dog is for me."

Josin died on Tuesday, at his house, happy in the knowledge that he had fulfilled his promise to Trasgu and Antonia then fulfilled her last promise to her new dog’s former owner, by attending Josin’s funeral accompanied by his ‘best friend’.

Fundraiser Annette APAH Dog show receives BEM honour

Dog owners in the Vega Baja, should start grooming and training in preparation for the APAH charity’s Fun Dog show, which takes place on sunday July 9 at 12.30pm.

The venue for this fun event is the all weather marquee, situated close to the sports centre and swimming pool, at the Carpa Municipal in Pilar de la Horadada. entrance fee is €10.00 per dog and owner, with no limit to classes and €1.00 euro for spectators and free entrance for under 12’s. show and registration for classes is at 12.30pm, with judging commencing at 1.00pm.

by Andy Mansell The undoubTed highlight of the elche Children's Care home Annual Summer Gala ball last Saturday, was the announcement that Annette english, volunteer fund raiser and co-founder of the eCCh has been named in the Queen's birthday's honours List and awarded the british empire Medal.

Annette, together with her husband dave have been fund raisers on the Costa blanca for the last 13 years and have

worked tirelessly to raise the awareness of the needs of the elche Children's home and improve the quality of life of the children living there.

The ball proved to be the perfect opportunity to celebrate this fantastic achievement and Annette danced with her husband dave to ‘wind beneath my wings’, which she dedicated to him.

Restaurant La Finca Vuelta was the setting for the magical evening, where guests were wined and dined alfresco, beside the pool whilst being serenaded and

entertained by soul singer barrington.

An entertaining twist to the fund raising saw guests fishing ducks from the pool and hunting for golden eggs to win prizes.

There was also an auction with prizes provided by local business.

Thanks were extended to organiser Sue Reader and her assistant Abi Johnson and also to dave diggle (blacktower Finance), Avalon Funeral Plans and Vincent's Real estate for sponsoring the event.

Summertime fun for Samaritans in Spain

by Andy Mansell SamaritanS in Spain held their annual Summer Fayre and Fashion show at their torrevieja branch, located at punta marina Comercial Centre last Saturday.

Despite the high temperatures experienced at the weekend, there was a good attendance of visitors who enjoyed entertainment by the Dayamante Singers, the rascals and Sunshine Fm whilst browsing through the variety of stalls and watching the Fashion Show organised by the Volunteers.

Visitors were also free to visit the drop-in centre to enjoy a complimentary hot beverage and talk to members of the Charity.

Samaritans in Spain would like to thank everybody for their kindness and generosity in making this a successful event.

Funds raised from the event will help to strengthen the Samaritans network in Spain, and enable the charity to buy necessary equipment needed to ensure a seamless service across the country.

David saves the day

A community minded San Luis resident, David Blackie has stepped in to chair the next meeting of the San Luis Neighbourhood Watch.

Owing to current president returning to the UK and the difficulties in finding a replacement, it was envisaged that the monthly meetings would have to be discontinued after 17 productive years.

At least one representative from the town hall is always in attendance at the meetings to answer any queries and to offer solutions to problems that residents are experiencing.

Therefore residents fearing that after many years the communication would be terminated are delighted that David has volunteered his help The meeting, next Monday June 26 at 4.30pm in Casa Ventura, San Luis, is the last meeting before the summer break and David would be very pleased to welcome the support of residents in not only San Luis but also La Siesta and El Chapparel.

Lords of the dance The Terri hovarth Morris dancers have recently hung up their bells for the summer season.

Their last dance event was a charity day at La Siesta for help at home, at their Fiesta Fun day where many people were enthralled with the Dance routines offered by the Morris Dancers.

The Morris team had also danced out recently in Algorfa at a charity lunch organised by Amigos de Algorfa to raise funds for the village school.

The amount raised on the day was €413 which added to a growing fund which so far this year has totalled well over €1000.

The Terri hovarth Morris Dancers Perform at many venues, during the season, mainly Charitable events, or for requested performances and Fiestas.

Morris Dancing consists of many kinds of english Traditional dances for any age, from North Western to Molly and many other mixed Dances.

by Andy Mansell Following on from last year's record fundraising for the Pink ladies annual walk, staff and customers of the Queen Victoria Bar in Cabo Roig joined forces to take part in this year’s event in the hope of raising even more funds.

Several of the customers were walking in memory of graham grant and Colin Bowden, whilst landlady Sue Court was walking in support of close friend lynda Phillips who is currently battling the disease.

The response was incredible and the final amount raised was a staggering €2725.70, which will be used by the charity owners, Karl and Sue said, "we cannot praise our customers enough for their dedication to this annual event. Also we wish to thank all those who kindly donated to the cause including customers in local bars who donated to our bucket collection.”

There has been a lot of procrastination with regard to the question ‘should Donald Trump be allowed a state visit to Britain?’ This would mean he would be wined and dined by the Queen and carriage ride through London, the highest accolade a visiting head of state could have.

Jeremy Corbyn and most of the Labour Party don’t want the visit to happen, especially after Trumps recent tweets ridiculing London Mayor sadiq Khan over the last terrorist attack in London, although the Conservatives would be quite happy as future trade relations with the Us are now more important than ever. however Trumps spokesman is now saying Donald Trump will not be visiting Britain as yet, as this visit may cause demonstrations by the British public.

Now I can disclose that Donald Trump did make a private visit to London to have lunch with me, yes Me. he was following instructions from his first wife Ivana who I had befriended while working in New York, however his visit was sometime before he had developed his Presidential aspirations.

The restaurant we met at was called scribes below the offices of the Daily Mail and Mail on sunday of which I was associate editor in Derry street Kensington, London. some years earlier while working in New York for the Daily Mail, I met Ivana Trump, we became good friends after I had arranged special passes for her to attend royal ascot in Britain, and then put her picture on the cover of You Magazine in her ascot sunday best.

Ivana in those days was the Queen of New York, she arranged all the parties, receptions and balls, just about everything that happened in the Big apple was organised by her and her private secretary. her private secretary had telephoned me “Donald Trump is in Paris, Ivana told him to hop over to London in his private jet and take you out to lunch” she said. Donald and Ivana had divorced on reasonably good terms, he had bestowed millions of dollars on her, they had a young daughter Ivanka, that Donald adored, Ivanka was a beautiful little girl who would kiss me on the cheek whenever I arrived at the Plaza hotel in New York that Donald owned and Ivana managed.” There will be four of you for lunch, Donald, his girlfriend Marla Marple’s and her mother Laura ann”, Marla was a former beauty queen and actress, she later married Donald but they divorced after 6 years.

The lunch was unremarkable, a lot of chatter about New York and what they thought of London. Then Donald launched into his business mode, my concentration wavered as he spoke in self-glorification, I looked at the threesome across the table and what was at first remarkable was the typical large american style back combed hairstyles of Marla’s mother Laura, and Marla Marple’s, however Donald Trumps appeared even bigger, it looked as if a large piece of sage brushwood had blown in from a Windy City, maybe Kansas, and attached its self to Donald's head, the monstrosity appeared to have been back combed, up combed, down

combed and lacquered to within an inch of its life, a hair dressers nightmare, this is the first time I had seen it so close, three feet from me, frightening!

The conversation, as I said was quite informal however I played close attention to Donald's attitude and body language, his manner was to change every few minutes, his sentences were not eloquent, he sometimes looked as if he was gloating when speaking about himself, other times he looked impertinent, sometimes threatening, other times pressurising, he often pursed his lips like a petulant child, and occasionally he would place the tip of his thumb against the tip of his index finger making a figure O to press home a point.

Now this was just supposed to be a friendly getting to know you lunch, however Donald’s big business acumen of hotels and casinos was pushed down my throat, he is a business billionaire I grant him that, but without any underlying charm or wanting to ingratiate himself with you. When the lunch was over, Donald, Marla and her mother piled into their chauffeured rolls royce, I was sagging at the knees, wiped out, as if a steam roller had run me over. Donald Trump had come across like a bully trying to inflict his mantra and his brilliance on me.

Infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me, that's the very funny line stuttered by Kenneth Williams in the film Carry on Cleo as he is stabbed to death In the roman senate, these days it could be a line from the pursed lips ut- tered by Donald Trump about the attempt in the senate to distable his Presidency. Donald's opponents and all but a few of his supporters, have been ganging up, his tweets are mostly nonsense his speeches are rubbish, there is a growing feeling with the american Trump voters that

Donald is going to sell them short as his policies, are leaking water. at this moment Donald is fighting on all fronts, after sacking his own appointed FBI Boss James Comey the 6ft 7inch giant Comey sat in front of the intelligence Committee of the house of represetatives judicial committee and told them what was said during his private meetings in the Oval Office with Trump. “Drop the investigations into the russian involvement” said Trump meaning the Presidential election, and then demanded a pledge of loyalty according to Comey’s evidence, then instructed Comey not to inquire into other accusations being levelled at Trump.

The eX FBI boss believes that the three private meeting held in the Oval Office were taped by Trump and the committee is trying to get the tapes if they exist to verify Comy’s allegations. however Trump is becoming more beleaguered, as more Democrats and republicans, are angry at Trumps disrespectful attitude and unwillingness to comply with the Members of the senate some accuse him of being more Like Vladimir Putin, than Putin.

Now congressmen from both the republicans and Democrats are thought to be sharpening their knives, as the senate demands the handing over the tapes if they exist as suggested by Trump to Comey, If there are tapes of the Trump, Comey discussions that took place in the Oval Office the senate committee want them, and pretty darn quick.

Infamy, infamy they all have it in for him! I think if Trump survives this attempt by the senate in the cloak of Brutus to stab him in the back, will it be hail Trump or alas Trump.

From plucking strings to knocking on wood

WHEN Nik PrEscott stopped at his favourite café in Fuengirola for a cup of coffee, he didn’t for a moment think that it would change his life.

After spending 10 years in the royal Navy where he started to play guitar and then studied Jazz at Leeds college of Music before becoming a professional musician ending up at the Yamaha school of Music whilst earning living playing in different bands in the Uk including fun with tribute group Badness.

He then decided that he wasn’t happy in the cold and wet north of England and moved over to spain accompanies by his guitar and started to earn a living as a musician in both spain and Portugal, but he eventually realised that many singers wanted to use full-on backing tracks rather than hire a guitarist or a band. it was an easy move to return to teaching as there was quite a demand for qualified musicians who had experience of working with the young and he soon settled down to an academic life in Fuengirola.

During school holidays last year that he was enjoying his coffee overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean he fell by chance into a conversation with another customer who had a huge amount of paper work which intrigued him. that businessman was actually the Managing Director of oak Land Furniture spain who was just getting ready to launch the very popular furniture range in spain with the first showroom due to open in san Pedro de Alcantara.

What had started as a friendly chat, unknown to him had turned into a job interview and he was amazed when after an hour of chatting he was suddenly invited to run the oak Land Furniture showroom. somewhat at a loss for words and not sure if this was a real offer, he asked why he would be suitable for a job that he had never undertaken before. the response was quickly written on a serviette, stating

simply; “you’re polite, not pushy, intelligent and a people’s person – we’ll teach you the rest!” it took 24 hours for Nik to decide that this was going to be a fantastic opportunity for him and if the MD of this much regarded company thought he was good enough to work for them, it was a great honour.

Almost in a whirlwind he was sent to the Uk for full training about the ethos of the company and the huge range of product it has on offer before returning for the san Pedro showroom opening in october 2016.

I like to offer a friendly service and a personal service to the expats here in Spain who want quality product, I understand fully that customers don't like pushy salesman because I don't like them myself in just eight months, he has been involved in 900 successful sales but sees himself more as an adviser than a salesperson, wanting to ensure that customers obtain exactly what they need with the minimum of fuss and difficulty.

Nik has also been joined in store by the bilingual Lola Lopez as he admits his spanish isn't the greatest and wants to ensure that spanish customers receive exactly the same service as he offers English speaking clients. they are looking forward to making the stores 1,000th and it is mooted that that customer will receive a very special surprise gift when the transaction is completed. “i left spain a musician and returned to spain as a wood furniture specialist" says Nik who obviously enjoys the work that he undertakes.

When asked what the key to both his success and that of oak Land Furniture spain was, he is quick to say, without any hint of falsehood; "Well firstly it's the quality of the products and the brand, it's exceptional and the customers coming in store clearly see that. i'm no salesman but i'm now fully trained as a furniture specialist so all i have to do is advise when asked. “i like to offer a friendly service and a personal service to the expats here in spain who want quality product, i understand fully that customers don't like pushy salesman because i don't like them myself!

In my mid-teens I could barely wait for 1965, the year I’d hit 18 and be allowed to get a gun. This was in apartheid South Africa, where getting one’s first firearm was regarded as a rite of passage – but only if you were white, of course.

The local plods issued me with a licence after my dad, an early victim of pester power, reluctantly signed a permission form. So off I went to buy a .22 calibre Italian Bernardelli that I carried in event of attacks by enormous spiders and redneck hippie-haters and homophobes.

Within months of my acquiring the thing, it fell from my waistband in a cinema, hitting the floor with a loud thud. I felt around in the dark but couldn’t find it.

“Well,” I thought, “once the lights go up I’ll locate it.” no such luck. It had vanished. Then I noticed that, to the left of my seat, was a wide, vertical metal post that would once have supported by a long-gone arm-rest. I had no choice but to tell the fleapit’s owner that I thought my pistol had gone down the tube.

As a consequence, the next scheduled screening of How to murder your Wife had to be cancelled as we poked about with a wire coat hanger. An hour later we finally managed to hook it out, along with some vintage popcorn.

The furious owner threw me off the premises and warned me never to darken his doorstep again.

Months later, the firearm and I permanently parted company when I was on holiday in the coastal city of Durban. Some time ago there was a deeply moving tV advertisement featuring a war veteran Jack Jennings. He had travelled back to thailand to visit the graves of army comrades who had died from appalling treatment at the hands of the Japanese. the trip was provided by National Lottery funding that was part of the Heroes Return scheme, and it was heart warming to hear Jack’s account of how after more than sixty years, his haunted dreams had been finally laid to rest. this was indeed a worthwhile way to spend some of the billions of lottery money that has been raked in over the years. But what exactly constitutes a worthy cause? if you happen to be an origami fan in Wolverhampton who feels there are few facilities in the area where others of a like mind can meet and discuss their art, then for you this is obviously a worthy cause.

Likewise devil worshippers in Gravesend and basket weavers in Namibia. extreme examples maybe, but each could make a case for receiving a slice of the action because to them, their passion is a worthy enterprise. But then some of the recipients of lottery cash down the years have been questionable to say the least. millions have been pumped into exploring faiths and religion, but what the hell does that mean.

Jehovah’s Witnesses and the mormons operate a door to door service completely free of charge and usually when i am in the middle of lunch. if i want to explore other faiths, then i can do so at my leisure and without cost or supervision.

Nearly 20million has been earmarked to re-generate town centres that are dying largely due to the granting of planning approval to the likes of tesco and Primark who build hypermarkets and shopping malls on out of town sites. Reverse this trend and we will be on the way to solving the problem. No lottery grants needed. And don’t get me started on the £1.5 billion to museums and art galleries. With some of the garbage that is passed off to the public as art such as unmade beds and dead cows, it’s an obscenity that this amount of public money can be spent in such a way. We are talking about significant amounts of cash here, which if used wisely could make life enhancing changes for many deserving British people.

money CNMV to investigate trades before Popular rescue 26

The NaTioNal Securities Market Commission (CNMV) - the Spanish government agency responsible for the financial regulation of the securities markets in Spain - is investigating if there is proof of insider trading in Banco Popular in the lead up to its bailout by Santander.

‘We will investigate if, in the days before the intervention in Banco Popular, there was privileged use of information and manipulations in the stock market,’ president of the CNMV Sebastian Albella said in an interview published by financial newspaper ‘Expansion’ on Wednesday.

Banco Popular was acquired by Spain’s biggest bank - Santander in an overnight auction in early June for €1 after the European Central Bank warned it was on the verge of collapse.

Santander has acquired 100 per cent of Banco Popular’s shares and debt and also plans its own capital increase worth €7 billion to cover the absorption.

Banco Popular shares dropped almost 60 per cent in its last month of trading in the lead up to Santander's acquisition on June 7.

Albella said the investigation would concentrate on moves on the stock market in the run up to the rescue.

Deposit flight from Banco Popular in the weeks before its rescue has also led to calls for an investigation, though Albella noted that it wasn't within the CNMV's responsibility to investigate the withdrawals.

European Central Bank supervisor Daniele Nouy was questioned in the European Parliament's economic affairs committee on Monday over a withdrawal of deposits from Banco Popular by local and regional authorities.

Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said on Tuesday that some institutional depositors withdrew their money from the bank after a credit rating downgrade.

I have received an unjustified traffic fine. What can I do about it?

There are several ways to appeal: - online : visit the trafico’s website (DGT) ; REMEMBER you will need a digital identification certificate to do this.

- Go in person to the traffic office (DGT) in the province were the fine was issued.

-Have your lawyer dispute the fine on your behalf, especially if there are points on your license or if you have been called to court.

-Appeal in writing and send the document to the DGT via the post office (recorded post).

Some insurance companies will also dispute the fine on your behalf.

Remember in Spain non-Spanish residents can be fined on the spot and the fine must be paid in full immediately.

Spanish residents cannot be fined on the spot.

Depending on the type of fine imposed you have between 20 and 30 days to appeal any fines that you believe to be unjustified and to request a refund and any points that may have been removed from you license to be reinstated .

Basic forms of sentence building Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Many people who study Spanish get upset by those terrible things called verbs. They quickly discover that they are rather complicated, and they often find themselves sinking into a mire of grammatical terms that they don’t really understand.

It is certainly true that verbs are more complicated in Spanish than in english, but they are understandable if we take them step by step.

The first step is to be absolutely certain that we know what a verb is. Many of us have learnt quite correctly that they are “doing” words, such as “to run”, “to jump”, “to play” and so on. They can also include words that do not exactly express an action, but rather a kind of state, such as “to own”, “to have”, “to believe”, “to intend”. This form of the verb which in english usually starts with the word “to” is called the “infinitive”. It is the basic form of the verb before any changes are made to it.

The reason why it is so important to learn verbs is because they are what make sense of a sentence.

If I say something like “The boy the ball” I don’t make any sense. If I say “the boy hits, (or throws, or steals, or loses, or likes) the ball”, then I have made a meaningful sentence. “To hit”, “to throw”, “to steal”, “to lose” and “to like” are all verbs. now we are going to learn six verbs in Spanish to get us started. you will notice that all of them end in either “–ar”, “-er”, or “–ir.” all Spanish verbs have one of these three endings when they are in their “infinitive” form; that is the equivalent of the “to ...” form in english.

change in meaning, generally connected to “when” an action occurs and “who” is producing the action of the verb. However, not everyone learns early on that there is a great deal that can be done with verbs in their “infinitive” form. We can make simple sentences with them without any changes being made at all.

In order to do this we are now going to learn three more words (they are also verbs but that doesn’t matter for now) which can combine with our infinitive verbs to make simple sentences. I call them “first person” words because they are words about “I”, and “I” in grammar is called the “first person”:

CAMBIAR (to change) BEBER (to drink) VIVIR (to live)

even at this stage you may well be able to add other words you already know to make the sentences more meaningful. For example:

HABLAR (to speak) VOLVER (to return) DORMIR (to sleep)

you may have learnt in your Spanish classes, or noticed for yourself, that the endings of Spanish verbs often alter. When this happens it is to produce a

QUIERO (I want) NECESITO (I need) PUEDO (I can) There is a separate word for “I” in Spanish which is “yo”, but when we are forming sentences we usually miss the word “yo” out, so that the one word “quiero” means “I want” and so on.

We now already know enough to link these two words, that is, the “first person” word and the “infinitive” of the verb to make instant “minisentences”.

For example: QUIERO VOLVER (I want to return) NECESITO DORMIR (I need to sleep) PUEDO HABLAR (I can speak) QUIERO VIVIR (I want to live) NECESITO BEBER (I need to drink) PUEDO CAMBIAR (I want to change)

NECESITO BEBER AGUA (I need to drink water) QUIERO DORMIR MUCHO (I want to sleep a lot) PUEDO CAMBIAR DINERO (I can change money).

If you try out some different combinations just with these words, you will already be well on the way to being able to form some very useful basic sentences.

If you learn some more “infinitive” verbs, you can expand your range of possibilities even further. Here are six more to learn: TRABAJAR (to work) BAILAR (to dance) COMER (to eat)

Something else we should know about these infinitive verbs is that when they are pronounced, the “emphasis” or “beat” of the word falls onto the ending “ar”, “er”, “ir” which are shorter sounds than most english people assume. Remember as well that the “j” of trabajar has a throaty “h” sound, the second “c” in “cocinar” has a “th” sound and the “ai” of “bailar” is pronounced like the english word “I” or “eye”. These sounds are all dictated by specific rules of pronunciation which are rather difficult to explain in more detail in written form. now let’s see if you can create some more “minisentences” in Spanish. Here are some in english for you to think about.

I want to work.

I need to cook. I can dance.

I need to learn Spanish.

I want to eat more.

I can open the door.

I think it would be rather good for you to work these out for yourselves before next week, and also make up some more small sentences using the principles we have learnt. Remember that we are only talking in the first person “I” form at the moment. another thing you might have noticed is that in most cases the Spanish use fewer words to express the same idea, which is amazing when you think how much they like to speak!

The Midnight Bell

by Jack Higgins Sean Dillon returns for his twenty-second adventure in Jack Higgins’ The Midnight Bell, and he’s taking on the new leader of a well-known terrorist group.

He calls himself the Master, but beyond that, not much is known about the new leader of al-Qaeda. He filled a position that was made available when former IRA assassin Sean Dillon killed the previous leader–and the one before him.

This time, the new Master has a plan in place to make sure he doesn’t fall victim to a similar fate as his predecessors–kill Dillon before he can mount an offense.

To kick off the well-plotted game of cat and mouse, the Master contacts Dillon to tease just how much al-Qaeda knows about him, other government officials, and their operations. The news is unsettling and leaves Dillon and company scrambling to find out more about the mysterious new leader of the Middle east’s second most dangerous terrorist group.

That response, though, was just what the Master wanted, and he prepared for it in advance by setting a number of traps in place to catch Dillon and American intelligence agents offbalance. The plan works initially, but eventually Dillon realizes the game is afoot and makes a few daring plays himself.

Dillon and his team eventually connect the death of an aging White House secretary, who is actually far more important than the vanilla title reveals, with events from around the world.

That revelation is met with a new discovery that has Dillon racing against the clock to prevent a larger attack. also returning alongside Dillon are several characters from past books, including his niece, Hannah–who at only nineteen is surprisingly proficient with a number of firearms.

Here’s the problem–well, several of them… even if readers are able to get past the unlikely, head-scratching scenario where a terrorist leader calls up the person he’s targeting to show off and brag about how much they know about him…and the gun-toting teenager who isn’t at all phased by violence…there’s still the info@bookworldpuertobanus.com www@bookworldpuertobanus.com | 952 816 084

issue of unbelievable dialogue.

Higgins is a legend and has had a long and storied career, but, with all due respect to him, his latest offering is a mess.

Some of the dialogue is downright cringe-worthy, and most of the new characters read like hollow, mannequin-like fill-ins who add nothing to the plot. It’s disappointing, really.

To top it all off, the narrative bounces around randomly, making trying to follow the story a choppy, confusing experience. While longtime fans of this series will take solace in the fact that Sean Dillon is still very much the lethal, cocky operative they’ve come to love, there’s far more bad than good here. newcomers and casual thriller fans will struggle to get through The Midnight Bell‘s many downfalls, and those who do push through are rewarded with a lackluster, underwhelming ending to this mediocre plot.

Bruno w. well, Bruno, I try and keep my client list confidential and all my clients have therefore the entitlement to have such anonymity. I have had several clients from European Royal Families and stars of Stage and Screen too. Government Ministers and Clergy and famous people from all walks of life. What’s on at Finca San Miguel de Salinas

Finca San Miguel de SalinaS recently held their monthly open day as guests, volunteers and animals alike enjoyed an afternoon of food, drink and dancing.

The finca expressed their greatest thanks to the members of Bowls club - San Miguel de Salinas at eagles nest and Jacqueline douwstra from Holland for their donations towards the raffle which raised an excellent €225.

Just a week later, the finca hosted their fleamarket event and many supporters arrived to hunt for bargains. The finca would like to thank the volunteers who helped on the day – the funds raised were put towards food for the animals and rent.

The next open day will take place on Saturday June 24 between 5.00pm and 9.00pm and everyone is invited along, promising fun for the whole family.

Feel free to bring apples, carrots and tomatoes to feed the farm animals or cat food/ dog food for the cats and dogs.

Finca San Miguel de Salinas is supported by ‘Happy animales Spain’, founded by Mona nowak.

Happy animales Spain is a registered charity committed to the welfare of impoverished and abandoned animals. At the finca, neglected animals are taken, provided with any veterinary care they might need along with a lot of cuddles and very often adopted.

The work of Finca San Miguel de Salinas and Happy animales Spain is not limited to the dayto-day running of the finca. They regularly inspect animal cruelty in the area, discuss solutions with animal owners and carry out follow-up checks. if there is no other option, they will work to confiscate the animals and take them in at the finca.

Broadway and West End magic Lovers of musical theatre in orihuela are in for a treat this weekend.

Melody Makers International Choir will perform the Sound of Musicals on Saturday

Two fabulous concerts, showcasing songs from a number of popular musicals, will be held at the orihuela Costa Resort, this saturday June 24 at 2.00pm and 8.00pm.

Melody Makers International under their conductor, Nigel Hopkins are performing another great concert featuring music from some of the best musicals the west End and broadway have staged, with numbers from My fair lady, oliver, west side story and the long running stage sensation les Miserables.

The choir is also very fortunate to have a number of truly talented soloists, some of who are making a big name for themselves as professional performers.

Rebecca Holt is a regular professional

soloist singing in many venues on the Costa blanca, including her recent sensational performance at the benidorm Palace with Joe longthorne.

Verity Hall, another young lady with a great musical future in front of her, recently performed a concert with Nigel Hopkins to outstanding critical acclaim, proving these two young ladies have great singing careers ahead of them.

However, Melody Makers also have at least three other outstanding soprano soloist singers plus a chorus under the baton of Nigel Hopkins who will perform some great choral arrangements the popular songs.

The choir will have a live band supporting their shows, which include three members flying in from the united Kingdom especially for the concert.

These concerts will be supporting orihuela Costa Community Care, a recently formed local charity.

Winning chips for the Elche kids QuEsaDa fIsH & Chips Restaurant hosted their first Charity Night, in their newly refurbished restaurant, and what an amazing success it was.

Two hundred tickets were sold, leaving around 50 'would be' diners disappointed.

The interest was overwhelming, so trying to accommodate this large number unfortunately meant the room became cramped.

Numbers for future monthly events will be limited, to ensure comfort for all, however, notwithstanding this singular problem, the night was hugely successful.

The band 'Best of British' provided first class entertainment, with many guests enthusing about their musicianship and entertainment value.

The best news of all came with the news that 1,607 euros was raised for the Children's Care Home in Elche.

The next Charity Night at this venue will be on July 19, when money raised will be donated to Torrevieja stroke support, and entertainment will be provided by woody & The Peckers.

The band are so popular, that many of the tickets have already been sold, so anyone wanting to buy tickets should do so early.

More evidence linking stress to obesity Using hair to measure long-term levels of the stress hormone cortisol, UK researchers have confirmed the link between chronic stress and packing on pounds, as well as difficulty shedding excess weight.

‘When people are facing a stressful situation, a chain reaction is set off in the body that results in the release of cortisol, leading to higher levels of this hormone in the body,’ said lead study author Sarah Jackson of University College London in a statement to Reuters Health.

‘Cortisol is involved in a broad range of biological processes, including metabolism, body composition and the accumulation of body fat,’ Jackson said. ‘When we’re stressed out we may also find it more difficult to find the motivation to go for a run or resist unhealthy foods.’

Stress sets off alarms in the brain that trigger the nervous system to release hormones to sharpen the senses, tense the muscles, speed up the pulse and deepen breathing. Commonly called a flight or flight response, this biological reaction helps us defend ourselves in threatening situations.

Isolated or temporary stressful situations may not be harmful, but routine exposure to stress can lead to immune system problems, heart disease, nervous system complications and mental health disorders in addition to obesity.

For the study researchers examined data collected from men and women aged 54 and older taking part in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants underwent tests every two years starting in 2002, and during the sixth wave of the study they provided a hair clipping.

The study team tested cortisol levels that accumulated in the hair over time in 2,527 men and women and found that participants with more cortisol in their hair were also more likely to be obese or have lots of excess fat around their midsection.

Participants who were classified as obese based on their BMI or waist circumference had particularly high levels of hair cortisol, the study found. The findings add to growing evidence linking stress to obesity, said Dr. Susan Fried, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.

Cortisol is released in response to many stresses. Chronically high cortisol is thought to promote fat accumulation around the waist and increase the ability of fat cells to store fat. The findings suggest that people may need to take a holistic approach to weight loss that goes beyond diet and exercise to consider factors like stress, said Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center in New Haven, Connecticut.

‘You might think you need to improve your diet, or exercise more, and that’s true,’ Katz told Reuters Health. ‘But for you, the first priority might be to manage stress better so you are more capable of doing those things, and reduce a hormonal barrier to weight control into the bargain.’

Salmon, potato and tartare sauce traybake IngredIents: 600 g (1lb 5oz) new potatoes, halved if large 1 tbsp olive oil 4 salmon fillets 300 g (11oz) cherry tomatoes 2 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped

Sausage, parsnip and apple traybake IngredIents: 600 g (1lb 5oz) parsnips, peeled and chopped 2 red onions, chopped 1 tbsp olive oil 3 sprigs rosemary 8 sausages 4 tbsp apple sauce

MetHOd: Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan) mark 6. In a large baking tray, mix the new potatoes with the oil and some seasoning.

Cook for 1hr, adding the salmon fillets and cherry tomatoes for the last 10-15min.

Sprinkle over the dill and serve with the tartare sauce.

Chicken, sweet potato and pesto traybake IngredIents: 8 skin-on chicken thighs 600 g (1lb 5oz) sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped 2 peppers, deseeded and chopped 1 tbsp olive oil 3 sprigs oregano 4 tbsp pesto MetHOd: Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan) mark 6. Nephew surprises uncle in emotional unveiling of his restored Vauxhall In 2008 at the age of 58, Geoff Charles’ uncle, Bob Charles, retired through ill health after an accident which started a degenerative back disorder of the spine and left him in constant pain and on lots of medication.

Inspired by his uncle’s bravery in the face of his serious spinal condition, in April 2017 Geoff Charles, surprised him by spending two years secretly restoring his beloved Vauxhall Carlton GSi 3000 24v back to its former glory, just like an episode of Car SOS. Bob thought the vehicle was mouldering in an Essex garage having left it there 17 years ago when he moved to Ireland. As Bob looked closer, he realised that it was in fact his Vauxhall Carlton GSi 3000 24v! A fine vehicle capable of 145 mph which he had purchased for £28,000 back in 1991 when it was just 2 ½ years old.

‘You’re joking! Oh my goodness. I can’t believe it. I don’t know what to say.’ Bob said, visibly emotional as his friends and family joined him to enjoy the moment.

Once the restoration process was complete, Geoff Charles said, ‘The majority of the two years it took to restore was mainly due to sourcing parts.

A few times I thought we had come to the end of the road but we persevered. Now, completely fully serviced with new plugs, leads, filters, fluids and new battery, it starts and runs like clockwork. I can’t wait to see his face!’

Geoff talks emotionally about his uncle; ‘Talking with Bob over the phone you would never know he has these conditions as he is always cheerful, positive and upbeat in his demeanour. And even though he finds general mobility difficult, his passion for his cars remains.’

‘He has done so much for me over the years, helping me with the family business, Bower Retirement and also being a father figure and mentor to me. I wanted to repay him by restoring his cherished Carlton and give him the surprise of having it back to its former glory for him to drive.’

Queen announces self-drive innovation bill

The Government will introduce a new automated and electric vehicle bill, designed make Britain a world leader in future transport technology.

Announced by the Queen in her speech during Wednesday’s State Opening of Parliament, the bill will “allow innovation to flourish and ensure the next wave of selfdriving technology is invented, designed and operated safely in the UK”.

Plans include supporting the building of infrastructure that supports development and also consumer uptake of electric and autonomous cars.

This would include investing in technology and requiring the installation of charging points at locations such as motorway service stations and large fuel retailers.

Compulsory motor insurance would also be extended to driverless cars, “to ensure that compensation claims continue to be paid quickly, fairly and easily”.

The Queen announced plans in last year’s speech for the UK to become a world leader in autonomous car technology development.

The Government has since pledged to invest £200 million to the cause, alongside a £600 million investment into low-emissions vehicles. Currently, the UK makes one in five electric cars that are sold in the European Union (EU).

This spending by the Government is justified by citing research that shows 85.7% of accident-related injuries are due to human error. It says that the market for automated vehicles in Britain will be worth £28 billion by 2035.

Winning the toss, La Manga put Torrevieja in to bat and after hitting 12 runs off the first over, the next 14 yielded only 29. Torrevieja then tried to up the run rate and after losing kieran Wood for 30 and Ciaran Guichard for 18, Paul Harvey and Dave reid put together a partnership of 108.

Spain’s tennis future in Alicante Four hundred and fifty of the country’s top junior tennis players are competing in Alicante this week.

This fourth year of the Rafa Nadal Tennis Tour, will see the male and female players, all under the age of 14, compete for nine days at the Montemar Tennis Club in Alicante.

The Rafa Nadal Tour, sponsored by MAPFRE is a youth circuit that was born in 2014, driven by the Mallorcan tennis player and the foundation that bears his name, with an aim to groom Spain’s tennis stars of the future.

The gift of Senna Lewis HamiLton says being presented with one of ayrton senna's helmets for equalling the Brazilian's pole record means more to him than any trophy.

Senna'S family sent a helmet used by the three-time champion in 1987 to give to Hamilton when he earned a 65th pole, which he did in Canada on Saturday. "it is the most special thing i have, beyond all trophies," said Hamilton to the press. "as i kid i thought maybe one day i can get to formula 1 and emulate ayrton. To equal him; i just can't believe it."

Hamilton has long since surpassed Senna's record of 41 wins - he did so at the 2015 Japanese Grand Prix - and now has 55. in both poles and wins, he now lags behind only seven-time champion michael Schumacher, who claimed 68 poles and 91 victories. asked whether surpassing Senna's marks meant more than Schumacher's, Hamilton said: "i haven't got to the 68 of michael so i can't really say. i can't look that far ahead at the moment. "ayrton was the guy i noticed from the beginning. i think it was the colour of the helmet. So i am honoured

to be honoured by that family. "To think that i am that close to michael's record is incredible - i plan on getting there but that is all ifs and buts."

Hamilton, who repeatedly looked at Senna's helmet as he sat in the postqualifying news conference, said the achievement was even more special given it happened at one of his favourite races where he claimed his first pole and win back in his debut season of 2007. "i knew 65 was there and waiting; i knew montreal has been a beautiful place for me," he said. "i thought if i was going to get that special pole anywhere, it was going to be here.

"But you can only hope it is going to go well, and often it doesn't. "The lap started perfectly, very smooth, no mistakes, built it up and then the last corner which has always been a strength of mine." He added: "i am honoured to be among those great drivers, the legends. Ultimately just very proud. "it wouldn't be possible without all the work

from my family. "This is just the tip of the iceberg. no-one knows how hard we worked to get here. i am proud to have got the Hamilton name here. if this was my last day in the sport, the Hamilton name will remain

there forever."

The helmet Hamilton was given is a replica, for travel and insurance reasons, but he will be receiving a genuine helmet that Senna used at a later date.

"We believe in encouraging respect for your opponents. after the result, we decided that the manager should leave," Pablo alcaide, who helps run the side, told el Pais. however, the Spanish newspaper also published comments from the manager's lawyer, who insisted his client had not pushed players to score as many as they could.

The manager instead instructed his side "to pressure only in their own half" in the eight-a-side game, but Benicalap c "continued to attack and left spaces in behind", the lawyer said.

The game was Benicalap C's final match of the season. They finished bottom of the league with zero points and 247 goals conceded from their 30 matches. el Pais reports that such one-sided scores are not infrequent in Spanish youth football, but many clubs stop counting once they have scored more than 10 goals.
