Fugitive killer caught NATIONAL POLICE officers have arrested a 71-year-old Danish man in Calpe in connection with the death of his ex-wife in Belgium almost 10 years ago. Officers arrested Leonardus Lei Beumount on a European Arrest Warrant over the death. A court in Limburg has tried him in abstenia, found him guilty of murdering Josee Widdershoven in Maasmechelen and sentenced him to life in prison, revisable after 20 years. The court heard Lei Beumount appeared at Widdershoven’s home on December 13, 2009 armed with a 22-caliber rifle. The Limburg court issued the European Arrest Warrant after Lei Beumount absconded from a hearing in May. Officers detained the suspect while at a luxury yacht regatta in
Calpe. His extradition is now being weighed as the case continues. It comes as the Costa Blanca overtook the Costa del Sol in terms of violent crime, new police figures show.
