Explanatory note (Figures F9 and F10) The pupil/teacher ratio is obtained by dividing the total number of pupils (expressed in full-time equivalents) at a given level of education by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers working at the same level. These teachers include not only class teachers but also support teachers, specialist teachers and any other teachers involved in working with children in the classroom, with small groups of children or with individuals. Staff who are assigned tasks other than teaching (inspectors, school heads who do not teach, teachers on secondment, etc.) and prospective teachers doing teaching practice in schools are not included.
