Tell us a little bit about what you do at Patchell Industries...

We have around 200 staff spread over 10 sites, and Patchell’s is the number 1 heavy transport trailer manufacturer in New Zealand.

What were the workshop guys using before you tried the TECMEN?

We provided half-mask respirators, and each employee was professionally fit tested to ensure correct fit and maximum protection. These met our obligations for compliance by providing a 99.95% protection factor, however some employees found the masks to be uncomfortable, and having to shave daily to maintain the seal impractical. This created complacency, and they would not bother to put on the masks for quick jobs. They also would not shave, therefore decreasing the protection percentage. So we offered our employees the option of having air-fed welding helmets. Some opted to have the air-fed helmets in addition to their half-mask respirators.

From a H&S perspective, what do you like about the TECMEN?

We were satisfied with the TECMEN product. The helmet also provided protection against grinding and polishing emissions. The employees are also happy with the comfort level, fit, and the flip up option.

Would you recommend a TECMEN to other workshops looking to improve their H&S?

Why Bladerunner Boats gave up on welding fumes…

We talk to Greg Shine - Owner and Manager at Bladerunner Boats in Auckland about the TM820 and Freflow Respirator.

Tell us a bit about Bladerunner Boats... I’m Greg from Bladerunner Boats, we design and build aluminium power boats, and other style boats. We’ve been doing these Bladerunner catamaran boats for about 30 years, and we’ve been welding them for 30 years as well.

Typically on a 9 metre boat, there’d be about 3 kilometres of welding, which is a lot. So if you’re welding all the time, doing all that welding, you need some ventilation and protection while you’re doing it really.

We do what we can with fans and ventilation, but there’s nothing like having cool, clean air right where you’re breathing. It makes it a lot better.

What do you like about the TM820 + Respirator?

The boys say the vision’s good in the helmet, they like the fact the battery lasts all day when they’re using it.

I’ve been a welder for 30+ years and I know what it’s like to weld in confined spaces... It’s not nice. That’s why we got the original air fed helmet - to be able to weld inside the hull of a boat or inside a tank, or when you’re doing a lot of welding, because there are quite a considerable amount of fumes coming off a weld when you’re welding.

So it’s nice to have clean air. It’s a health thing. I’ve been welding half my life – I gave up smoking many years ago, so I might as well give up breathing welding fumes as well!

Tell us a bit about Action Engineering... We’ve been operating since 1991, working on major projects in the water and wastewater sector. We specialise in complex treatment plants here in New Zealand and overseas, and we also work on transport, marine, structural and other engineering projects. We’re now one of the largest general engineering companies in Dunedin with over 40 staff and 3 workshops!

You say the vision [TM1000] is the best you’ve seen, how has that helped you in the workshop?

Having the view with the side lenses helps you know when someone is close by, and just having the extra clarity has improved my welds even more.

What’s the airflow like, and how often are you changing the filters?

The airflow is awesome, really happy with the way it travels over my face. The best thing so far is the filters. They can suck up so much, and just keep performing.

And how are you finding the battery life and quick charge?

The battery life is incredible. It takes less than an hour to charge, then keeps going all day with no problems at all. If I’m hitting the welds really hard, just a 30 minute charge will see me using the helmet for another 4-5 hours.

Would you recommend a TECMEN to other engineers looking to buy a welding helmet?

Absolutely - like I said, it’s got better vision than both my Speedglas™ and Sentinel welding helmets, and also the extra side vision. The airflow and battery are amazing, and it’s comfortable. All round the best helmet I’ve had!
