Worded Woods

Here come the trees, blooming with leaves

Tall and fair, with air to care

There comes the man, in a smoky van

Choking the wild, making it mild

Here comes the water, in all quarters

Clean and blue, just for you

There comes the fellow, with garbage yellow

Throwing it in a river, making it shiver STOP THE POLLUTION, THINK OF A SOLUTION, ALLOW EVOLUTION

Reflections on Climate Change

Bengaluru was one of my favourite cities that I loved to visit during my childhood. Every year I would spend at least 10 days here. As a child, I was fascinated by the fact that we could be in our home without using a fan during the summers. The weather was pleasant and comforting those days. Another highlight was the green corridors that we could find in the bustling city. It was a refreshing sight to spot huge trees sprawling on either side of the roads.

The current Bengaluru is a different story altogether. It’s definitely changed from being a garden city to a concrete jungle with a few green pockets from the past. Climate change has made the weather unpredictable. In winters, rain clouds would grace us with a shower surprising unprepared citizens!. On other days, we wake up to foggy mornings with little visibility and a breeze. The fog clears by midday and the sun shows its might to us. Extreme temperature changes within a day is perfect for viruses to breed. A sequel to this story portrays sick adults and children struggling to adapt to the dubious weather.

The weather is unforeseeable in different parts of the world. The credit for this goes to mankind. Reckless urbanisation and injudicious methods of production and consumption has resulted in climate change. Even though we are aware of the daunting aftereffects of our oblivious actions, we are not mindful to rectify our deeds. There will be many people who still can’t remember to carry a cloth bag when they go shopping. Another group of individuals will not be mindful to segregate their waste. The list of our ruthless actions goes on and on.

When and how do we take the reins of sustainable development? We all are keen to blame climate change but are we thinking about the solution? It is high time to be conscious of our actions and thoughts. We need to mould the future generation by being a role model. It is easy to read articles and engage in discussions. But let's engage in the difficult partIMPLEMENTATION. Let’s begin our march towards a clean, green and sustainable living from our own homes. This will motivate our future generations to be responsible citizens. We must encourage our friends and family members to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Some tips for practising sustainable living are:

1) Bid adieu to plastic by switching to alternatives such as cloth / gunny bags, copper vessels, wooden cutlery etc.

2) Stop depending on delivery partners frequently. Instead walk/ cycle to nearby places to run your errands. Walking whenever possible reduces energy consumption and is extremely important to keeping your body fit and active.

3) Reduce food waste and try to compost whenever possible.

4) Curb overconsumption and choose a zero waste approach. This doesn't mean that we must discard our not-so-friendly products and hoard the eco-friendly ones. Instead make the best use of what we already have.

The next inevitable feat is to be CONSISTENT in our routine. We must stick to our practices and be mindful about our goal. Remember that we need to preserve and protect our mother earth for future generations.

I love my mom and equally love MOM - Mother of mother - Mother Nature

Sun shining bright and glaring down at me with a smile that makes two and many.

Raindrops are the tears of joy drenching and quenching the thirst for me and many.

Roses tulips and lavenders all in a row shying away from the grays and blues for me and many.

Rustling breaks the silence as it bustles to bring new hope for me and many.

Nature's natural mood swings to make us feel and fall in love with MOM - Mother Nature.

Not to miss so to protect her, let us not disturb her to keep all the seasons ever-present.

Neither makes her sad nor angry. Instead, make her happy happier happiest with our deeds.

Not to miss our duty, value and respect for her. Let it all be on time in time and at time.

Love MOM - Mother Nature !!!

Love as much and so much more than thyself. Let us together promise that we will make a sweet homestay for the next Genz.

CARROT & CHICKPEA BURGERS

Here is a recipe from World Wide Fund For Nature; WWF. These carrot & chickpea burgers have a sweet and yummy twist - they are veg-filled and really delicious. The real joy of this recipe comes from getting your hands dirty and shaping the patties.

INGREDIENTS

3 medium carrots, grated

1x 400g tin of chickpeas, drained

1 medium egg

Salt & pepper, to taste

2 tbsp dried mixed herbs

100g breadcrumbs or porridge oats

Your choice of extras to serve: burger buns, sliced tomatoes, sliced avocados, lettuce, mayonnaise or hummus or pesto, pickles, sliced cheese, or your own favourites

METHOD

Mix carrots, chickpeas, egg, salt & pepper, dried mixed herbs and breadcrumbs or oats in a food processor to form a smooth, thick paste.

Form into 8 patties and fry in a drizzle of olive oil in a pan set over medium heat until cooked through and golden (about 3-4 mins on each side).

Serve with your choice of bun, fillings and extras.

To make it extra, choose a selection of favourite burger fillings and lay them out in bowls and plates on the table to make it a “build-your-own” burger dinner. People are more likely to eat the veg they choose to put in themselves!

Understanding SDG 7

SDG 7 is affordable and clean energy. This SDG aims to provide access to clean energy which will help humanity grow. The lack of access to energy supplies and transformation systems is a restriction to human and economic development. The earth provides us with many non-renewable and renewable resources such as solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, biofuels, natural gas, coal, petroleum, uranium.

Increased usage of fossil fuels without taking action to mitigate the impact of greenhouse gasses globally will cause disastrous effects on the climate. Energy efficiency and more use of renewable sources will contribute to climate change mitigation.Maintaining and protecting habitats will allow humanity to use hydro energy and other renewables that organisms apart from humans use.

More than 3 billion people rely on wood, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and heating, this has a huge impact on the environment. Due to the usage of these products; Since 1990, global emissions of CO2 have increased by more than 46 per cent!

So, based on this SDG we all need to reduce the amount of non renewable resources that we use!

Our opera!

Our Opera may also be the most awaited and exciting event in Silver Oaks. We all give our complete dedication to make it a success. The annual opera is an event which happens once a year. This time, it happened after 3 long years! This is why everyone was even more excited to participate. This was an all-inclusive event, which means every acorn had to participate in either dance, music, props or drama. The huge day had arrived. All of us jumped into action as soon as we reached school, wearing costumes, putting on makeup, and trying on external accessories.

It all started in November, a good one and a half months prior to the event. Everybody jolted into action, auditioning for roles, starting dance practice and making props. Time flew past us as if it were some racing car. Then, a bolder hit us. Well, it was something we can't stop, and that was rain. This was overcome, though, by renting a convention hall. (We were supposed to have the opera on our lawn, called the green meadows.) On the 2nd last day of preparation, our costumes arrived. And then, another huge problem arose. Everybody was falling sick rapidly! This called for immediate plan B.

Empty spots were filled, and many accommodations were made. In the end, all was well. Then, we got into our buses and started heading toward the venue. We walked into Maple Convention Centre with our heads held high, anxiously waiting for the grand Opera to begin. Our Opera is split into 4 segments: 1st is the Pre-Primary Opera, in which the little stars of our school kicked it all off by discovering India again. Then, their seniors, the 1st to 3rd grade, showcased their spirit and energy, with their theme being: “Merchants of Happiness”. Continuing the spirit, grades 4 to 6 did their take on the 1956 film, “The King and I”, and finally Grades 7 and above wrapped it all up with the “Blue Expedition”. It was thrilling and motivating to see so many parents cheering for us. The band performed first. After that, the intro walk. Then the real action began. It was certainly a really good experience and I think every parent will agree with me that those two and a half hours couldn’t have been spent better.

Guest Lecture on Carnatic Music

The sound of the Sarangi - the melodious Veena, Carnatic music by far be the most calming style of music there ever is .Our senior from high school enlightened us on Carnatic Music. The word ‘Carnatic’ means pleasing to the ear. The 7 notes of Carnatic are said to be originated from Shiva's Damroo. The father of the style, Sage Purandaradasa, made the first 4 'Pillari Geetham'. The trinity or the trimoorthy of the style are Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri. There are some components. Pitch is called Shruti. Shruti is a central system and is the most important part or foundation for short. There is an exercise to obtain the perfect Shruti, Sa-Pa-Sa. The next component is Rhythm or Tala. The meaning of Tala is a sequence of beats made by hands. It has 2 sub-components, Laghu and Drutham. Laghu means beat and Drutham means turning of the hand. Then comes Ragas. Ragas with all 7 notes are called Sampoorna Ragas. Mohanam and Kalyani are 2 types of Ragas. There is something called the Navarasam. It consists of nine emotions which are: Peace, Love, Anger, Humor, Sorrow, Courage, Terror, Disgust and Surprise. Next comes the divine Harikambhoji. It is a Raga that lets you express your emotions. Next, we have a melodious Raga called Kalyani. It is mostly used in film songs. One of the famous Carnatic artists is M.S Subbulakshmi. We, on the behalf of whole grade 5, would like to thank our senior for taking time out from his busy schedule and doing this session.

Looking the IB way-PYP exhibition and learning fest.

On 18th February 2023, acorns of our school from grades 5 & 6 organised their PYP exhibition and learning fest. It represents the independent learning that is sparked by our interests on surrounding key issues that they want to inquire into, and ultimately take action to improve or create awareness about out around these issues.

It was called the PYP exhibition as they were tested on their knowledge before moving to MYP and it was called learning fest for grade 5 as we showed our learning journey through this exhibition. We work on this through an inquiry cycle which has 6 stages. When the teachers first announced this event all acorns had a view of it being weeks of tiring work but as a few days passed by, we started enjoying the work. We had to first think about 2 sustainable development goals close to our heart and we were sorted into groups that way.

Then, we split ourselves into small groups and worked on different aspects of this project. For example each group prepared a chart for each country and their status in achieving the sustainable development goal. Everyday an addition to charts were created by every group. We had to be a thinker and inquirer to research for information about our particular sustainable development goal .

We had to be open minded to listen to the ideas of everyone in our group so that we could make an effective project. We also had to be principled with self management skills in order to finish our work without any delay. We had to be balanced and focus on both project and also other school works. Few weeks later, we started making models of our goal as we are risk takers. We had also faced a lot of issues in making the models as some broke and leaked .

All of us took some personal action as it is best to start with an issue locally.Since we were reflective we thought on how we could make it better. One and a half week before the learning fest when everything was almost ready, we being communicators started working on our speeches. A day before the event we set up the stalls and had a lot of fun hanging buntings and decorating the stalls as well. There were also some stalls put up by students of higher grades which was meticulously planned by them.

On 18th morning, all students of grade 5 and 6 were all geared up. First, there was a orientation session conducted by the MYP students in the multi purpose hall. Then came the big announcement where Shailaja mam told that grade 6 is transitioning to MYP. After the orientation, parents visited our stalls where we explained in detail about our project.

We felt very happy as we got praise from both the parents and teachers. We enjoyed this whole experience as We got a taste of how MYP was going to look like and personally I got benefitted by applying many learner profile and ATL skills in this journey. The learning fest and PYP exhibition was a grand success!

Fun and true facts about climate change

The last decade was the hottest in 125,000 years. Due to climate change we are losing 1.2 trillion tons of ice every year. There is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere now than during any time in human history. Climate change is causing a refugee crisis. Earth is still in an ice age that started 2.5 million years ago.

There are 5 types of climate change namely-Tropical, Dry, Temperate, Continental and Polar. Global warming is (partially) reversible.

Within the next 2 decades the global temperatures are likely to rise by 1.5 celsius.

More than 1 million species are a risk due to climate change.

Greenhouse gas is at a level that is all time high. Together we can save our planet!

Republic Reputation

Every year on January 26, India celebrates Republic Day with full fervor and great enthusiasm and the peak of this day is, for me, the parade. I had never understood the meaning of Republic day in the past but now that I have learnt the importance of this day, I know that it is much more than a simple parade, for this is the day when the Constitution of India came into effect. Our constitution is one of the longest ever constitutions that was written, and on this very day, in 1950, our country India was declared as a democracy, which was a cause for celebration. This is when the government started protecting our fundamental rights and gave us fundamental duties that we need to uphold as a citizen of our country. The Assembly met for approximately two years before the Constitution of India came into effect. I think it is one of the most significant festivals of India.

Wish you a happy Republic Day. Jai Hind!

Grade 4 Poetry Competition

“Inside you there is an artist that you don’t know about..."

The word artist is a broad term, and can refer to any profession (or anything for that matter) that involves creativity and imagination.

One such profession is poetry. This clean, simple and enchanting style of writing can express anything and, given its wide range, can be written by anyone.

Our acorns, of Grade 4, for example, explored the charming world of poetry and produced their own artistic and inspired works, all of different topics, ranging from the oceans to the cities. While all our students had presented some fine poems, a few of them outshined the others. Prominent among them being Akanksha, who got 1st place for her poetry. She took her inspiration from ups and downs of life, and using her vivid imagination, created a beautiful poem titled Memory Lane

The runner – up of this competition was Ishaan Dhiman of Galileo Galilei. This acorn’s poem began with “this tale goes back to when I was three”, and was certainly an eye – catching beginning. The student who came in 3rd place was none other than Zoi Shankar of Marie Curie. She had written a poem which described her memories, which was entrancing and quite frankly, first – class.

And finally, picking these winners was probably a really challenging job for the judges because beyond all these “winners”, all of our acorns did amazingly well and had written poems that are guaranteed to win the next competition.

Before I complete this article, I would like to add a note of appreciation for the teachers who put in an immense amount hard work and effort, beyond their regular job towards creating this event for the students. I will once again say, congratulations to all our participating acorns and thank you to the grade 4 teachers for all the work put into this.
