And just like that we’re on the brink of Christmas. Never a region that could be accused of doing things by halves, there’s an amazing amount of local festivities. We’ve tried to mention and find as many as possible in this issue.

Local businesses seem to be doing well, with non-market days busier and new businesses opening. Keeping Christmas dollars local can add to the health of our region. And yes, it might be cheaper or easier (maybe even inevitable for some things) to just hit the big chain stores, it won’t be as special – or as enjoyable. When going in search of presents, please make our town your first stop. We are spoilt to have a market come to town twice a week, but there’s also lots of boutique shops and Eumundi Square to explore too.

When a woman is fleeing domestic violence or experiencing homelessness these are the basic items she access to - bags are not passed on without these items in it. Also anything else you want to put in your bag to make another woman feel special; brush, umbrella, phone card, hair ties, hand cream, balm, tissues, moisturiser, and perhaps a short note from you. You’re only limited by bag size, budget and imagination. The shelters ask sharps, food and pharmaceuticals NOT to be included. Mark your bag with a yellow ribbon if it has been aimed at a teen.

Business T H E A R T O F TAT T O O Damien Wickham takes tattooing very seriously which is why he’s so good at it and enjoys a reputation as one of the best tattoo artists on the Coast.

Before Blacklist opened its doors in Eumundi recently, it already had clientele lining up at the door wanting Damien’s steady hand, or that of head artist Jessie Atkins. With his first tattoo salon near Kawana doing so well, Damien had been wanting to open a second store up this end of the Coast for a while and was drawn to the creative energy and beauty of Eumundi. His store manager Matt ‘Mad Dog’ Campbell and Jessie were more than willing to make the move and now live locally in Doonan.

Damien is still based near his other salon, but shared his wife has been scouring online house sales in Eumundi and says it’s only a matter of time before they’re in the ‘hood too.

completely safe. “We want to make tattoos that last forever but we won’t ruin people’s skin – even if they ask us to!” he explained.

True to his word, while we’re chatting a teenager comes in with a large tattoo request which Damien proceeds to talk her out of. He explains to the young woman that she’s still growing.

And if he were to tattoo her now where she wants him too, in a couple of years it wouldn’t be legible and he’s not going to ruin her skin.

Damien said she’d find plenty of places willing to take her money and give her what she wanted but not him. Damien speaks with disdain of the people all over the Coast who set themselves up tattooing in backyards.

“People don’t understand how dangerous that is. Tattooing is a trade – be it a creative one – and you need proper training or you could really hurt people and desecrate their skin.”

“We see it as our duty to protect our customers from infections – and from bad tattoo decisions, Damien explained.

Another customer, Kirin, has come from the Gold Coast with her mum especially to visit Jessie and get her first tattoo.

She’s been on the waiting list with Jessie for three months and knows what she wants. Jessie explained, “People come in with an idea on the day but it takes an hour to three hours to collaboratively come up with a design and with work often not starting until the afternoon.”

Damien shared that customers come from across the country to visit his salons. “People come with their families and spend the whole day with us. They have lunch in town and browse the shops and I like bringing new

customers into the township and adding to the prosperity of the whole town,” he said.

Damien enthused, “Everyone is welcome to drop in... and become a walking canvas.”

Business NEW PRACTITIONER FOR DOUBLE HAPPINESS Jennifer Gralike started studying massage more than a decade ago to help her mother manage the pain associated with a chronic inflammatory condition, fibromyalgia. “After witnessing the amazing outcome of those relaxation treatments, I was inspired to continue my formal education to gain qualifications in remedial massage,” Jen shared.

Jen now works at Eumundi’s Double Happiness Acupuncture and Wellness Centre along with Japanese Acupuncturist Emma Iwinska.

O U T S TA N D I N G E U M U N D I M E AT S Eumundi Meats may not be in the village any more, but it continues to carry the Eumundi name and grow in reputation. The latest accolade awarded to the business was an industry award presented by the Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC). Business owner Jon McMahon explained the AMIC is the national body that supports all facets of the meat industry. Eumundi Meats was awarded the Qld Outstanding Industry achievement award, which recognised their outstanding contribution to making a difference in the industry, leadership in the industry and making a difference in the community. Jon shared, “As you can imagine this was a very proud moment as I am third generation in the industry with both my father and grandfather being butchers.”

This month Eumundi’s Greg L’Estrange and Jenny Brice became the 1000th landholder on the Sunshine Coast to ensure their property offers a home to local wildlife. They’re now part of the Land for Wildlife Program. It’s become one of the most successful private land conservation programs in Australia, with the Sunshine Coast Council delivering the largest program in Queensland.

Ms Brice said she had been working with Landcare volunteers and officers to transform the former farming property to a natural haven.

“We’ve been working with Landcare for some time, gaining an education on how best to manage the property for the benefit of birds and wildlife in the area,” Jenny shared.

She explained the couple have planted koala trees and reduced the amount of pesticides used and found native grasses quickly returned to the property. Jenny and Greg were drawn to the Land for Wildlife program after

their Eumundi neighbours became involved. “We really started to think about how to create a wildlife corridor with some of our neighbours and this seemed like a great way to do it,” Jenny said.

Mayor Mark Jamieson, who visited the property, praised the efforts of all 1000 property owners for their commitment to nature conservation. “The Sunshine Coast Land for Wildlife program has the largest membership by any local government, collectively protecting and restoring 8272 hectares of habitat across the region,” Mayor Jamieson explained.

Community C WA C E L E B R AT E S 9 0 Y E A R S Janet Millington, Eumundi Eumundi’s Country Women’s Association (CWA) recently celebrated an impressive milestone. The community group celebrated 90 years in the village. And when you consider CWA Australia is 95, the Eumundi legacy is truly impressive. Current members celebrated with a lovely lunch in their historical blue HQ recently.

Although Eumundi is very different than it was 90 years ago, the CWA remains just as relevant. This community group continues to provide

companionship and camaraderie for women. It also continues to focus on the shared goals of country women who want to provide the best quality of life for their own families and support other women in remote areas. CWA also addresses women’s issues at state and national levels, lobbying for government initiatives to stop violence against women and for legislation that protects women and children. CWA also work at the international level for peace and improved conditions for women and works with the UN on projects. For women - young and old - who want to support other women, CWA provides that opportunity in a friendly and supportive way.

I joined because it is a local group, in a rather privileged region, that can have not just local outcomes, but can reach out to rural communities that are doing it tough as well as helping to improve conditions for all Australian women and supporting women and their families and communities globally. Little things we do here can make big improvements in other parts of the world.

Books THE GREEN’S SUMMER READING LIST

Top of the stack is the 2017 Booker Prize winner Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. The Booker shortlist comes out earlier in the year and the winner is announced in late October - always some interesting reading and gift ideas there.

Something else which caught my eye is Alice Hoffman’s The Rules of Magic, a sequel to Practical Magic - a magical book about modern day witches and an old favourite. I’m saving it as a special treat!

Twenty years ago, just before I first came to Australia, I read Illywhacker by Peter Carey. Herbert Badgery was reportedly the embodiment of the Australian national character, which I’ve been pleased to observe is not necessarily true! Carey’s latest novel, A Long Way from Home has been described as this great storyteller’s first attempt to write about “The question of what it might mean to be a white Australian.” As a ‘Pom’, who has made Australia my home, I look forward to meeting Carey’s characters who will tell their story and educate me.

Looking forward to reading Dark Emu: Black Seeds: Agriculture or Accident? by Bruce Pascoe again this summer. This book takes you on a journey of discovery, unearthing the ways of Indigenous Australia that are kept buried deep in the earth and in the historical records of the first colonisers. Taking extracts from the diaries of some of the first white contact in areas across Australia, a very different picture is shown of the depth of knowledge that was completely ignored and destroyed. There’s so much to learn from this and by honouring and relearning these practices, repair some of the damage that we do today. It’s a story of optimism for the future.

I’ll be reading Call of the Reed Warbler by Charles Massey this summer. Australia is one of the worst global offenders when it comes to deforestation.

Meanwhile, agriculture makes up around 14% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Massey provides an insider’s look at the sins of the past for Australian agriculture through his own redemptive journey.

I’m normally mad for a political thriller, and Jane Austen-esque novels tend to leave me stone cold, but my wife Susa couldn’t put Belgravia down. This latest offering from Julian Fellowes (of Downton fame), was beautifully written and a real page turner - perfect for a holiday read. It naturally concerns class - this time in the time of a young Queen Victoria - with the upper echelons of society beginning to reluctantly embrace the emerging industrial nouveau riche. It’s also quite the ripping yarn featuring much derring do.

“My favourite piece to create this time of year is of course the wreath - which can present itself in many different styles.”

Nat shared that traditionally wreaths are a lush green pine with fresh flowers. But she suggests creating something longer lasting using foliage and blooms that will dry well (like Hydrangeas and Banskias). “I also love to add touches of nature to tables with fresh and/or foraged garland centrepieces or vases.

“I find clients are more willing to steer away from what they may have done traditionally and experiment with new colour

palettes and textures. Every considered leaf and flower adds to the magic that is Christmas,” she said.

So, let’s embrace this beautiful place we call home, grab the snips, head outside and bring Christmas inside - made with love from Mother Nature.

Nat has been holding successful workshops for the past few years in Wreath and Garland making, in the lead up to Christmas.

Craft ADVENT COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS Have you ever thought of creating a peaceful and magical advent scene? People of any faith can dedicate a little nook in their home to honouring the original story of Christmas – the journey that Mary and Joseph make to Bethlehem. The Christmas story offers so many beautiful gifts and children resonate with it very much. It’s also a lovely way to make Christmas about more than presents – and to practice gratitude for the world in which we live and all that it gives us.

You can choose to emphasise a different realm on each of the four Sundays leading up to Christmas, the 12 days of Christmas or focus on adding to your advent scene in the final week. Here are some advent ideas for you to play with. Whilst it may feel like weeks away, now is the perfect time to start to creating little figures and finding treasures to create your advent scene ready for Christmas Eve. Infuse the creative process with love (rather than a sense of panic or obligation!) and remember it doesn’t have to be perfect. Your collection can grow each year as new figures join the scene.

• Allocate a nook or shelf (out of reach of very young hands) and soften it with a natural cloth, cotton wool, tinsel or sparkles.

• Create a path out of little

stones, buttons, gems for Mary and Joseph to travel along.

• Forage for flowers and plants to adorn the path as we honour the kingdom of plants.

• The next addition is full of gratitude for animals. Beeswax animals, wooden or clay figurines, little sculptures and found feathers can join the scene.

• Make a simple stable at the far end of the path out of bark and sticks or whatever your children feel drawn to.

Health KEEPING KIDS ACTIVE OVER SUMMER Brooke Conlan, Personal Trainer, Eumundi With the school holidays fast approaching our kids will be soon looking for something to occupy their time over the long break period. Going from a structured learning environment to free time with family and friends can be challenging for some kids and they will be looking for something to keep them engaged and busy.

This is when “screen time” can become excessive and kids can become more focused on television, game devices or social media. It is a convenient way to keep kids quiet and entertained and in small amounts it is of no harm. It is only when kids become disengaged from the outside world and spend large periods of the day on screens that it can become an issue.

Lack of physical activity, social interaction and delayed cognitive development can be caused by too much screen time and can be detrimental to a child’s health. As a minimum, kids need at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day to prevent a sedentary lifestyle

which can lead to many diseases - not to mention the effect on their mental health.

There are different approaches to screen time which may be helpful when trying to monitor a child’s exposure. Screen time is not all bad! Some helpful tips include: • Limiting screen time to a set period each day.

• Allowing the child to “earn” screen time. 30 minutes of physical activity may equal 15-20 minutes of screen time. I would suggest this over doing jobs around the house as it encourages the physical side which is great for healthy kids!

• Play dates – other people’s kids can keep yours occupied and they are not as likely to get bored and look for things to do.

• Set a family challenge of no screens for a week with a big family outing of their choice at the end of the challenge. (I have done this several times and it is great when the kids know what to expect, they know how long the challenge goes for and they are working toward something.) This breaks the habit and when they do go back to screens you often find it is not as much as previously!

• Encourage kids to partake in computer games that are educational and challenge the mind.

In the first week of these school holidays Brooke is running Kid’s Fitness Workshops with professional yoga teacher Michelle Collier from Mindful Yoga. The program is aimed at five - 12 yearolds and will run for four days in the first week of the holidays.

This recipe has been handed down from my great-grandma. It was a real treat - especially on cold nights when the family came in after a hard day of picking cotton or working in the corn paddock and milking the cows. Grandma originally steamed the golden syrup pudding in a 7lb tin that the golden syrup was packed in back in the 1940s because she didn’t own a pudding basin. It later became a tradition in our family for Christmas (as our children didn’t like the fruit in their Christmas plum pudding). Our children now make this recipe themselves and it’s often served to our friends that join us for dinner. This simple but delightful tasting pudding is a treasured recipe of The Farmhouse Eumundi.

Ingredients

Method

• 1 cup golden syrup

• Grease a 1ltr pudding basin with butter. Pour syrup into base.

• 125 g butter • 1/2 cup castor sugar • 2 eggs

• Beat butter and sugar until creamy.

• 2/3 cup milk

• Add eggs one at a time beating between each addition.

• Extra golden syrup to serve (optional)

• Stir in sifted flour and milk in alternate batches.

• 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour

• Spoon mixture carefully on top of the syrup in the basin.

• Cover basin tightly with lid.

• Place basin on a trivet in pot of boiling water. The water should reach half way up side of basin.

• Put lid on pot and simmer gently for approx 1.5 hrs.

• Check water level a couple of times during cooking

to ensure that it is still approximately half way up side of basin. If you need to add more water make sure it is boiling water.

• When cooked, remove basin from heat and set aside for 5 mins before turning out onto a plate.

Serve with custard and/or ice-cream.

Heritage H I S T O R I C A L A S S O C I AT I O N G O E S S O L A R Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi Manager The Eumundi Historical Association (EHA) is responsible for a number of historic buildings in Eumundi. Recently the EHA commissioned condition reports for the two most significant buildings under its care, Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre, once the town’s Methodist Church, and the Eumundi School of Arts Hall, which EHA has been trustee of for the community since 1989.

These over 100 years old wooden buildings need constant care and attention and the reports identified many maintenance issues with both buildings, a number of them quite urgent. These have now been prioritised and the EHA is working through them as funds allow, to achieve what EHA President Donata Page likes to call future proofing. “As custodians of these buildings it is important to make sure issues are dealt with, so these buildings continue for another 100 years.”

Large old buildings are expensive to look after and recently, in a bid to cut electricity costs and add to the EHA’s environmental credentials, solar power was put onto the roof of each building. Lighting in both buildings was also changed to LED low voltage

ones. Importantly with Discover Eumundi this is now lighting up the displays much more effectively, with the new lights giving out little heat or ultra violet light, minimising fading and other damage to heritage objects on display.

The School of Arts Hall will have a major upgrade of its toilets starting later this year and some landscaping and outdoor decking is planned in the near future. Also on the list is the painting of both buildings inside and out. Caring for these buildings is really never ending, but it’s a task that the EHA is committed to.

Outdoors M T N I N D E R RY, VA L D O R A The Mt Ninderry walk is 304 metres high and has a number of stunning platform lookouts at hinterland views, including the solar farm and the Coast to the east. It’s about a 3km walk and takes around an hour to complete. The track is graded medium and requires decent footwear. Great for kangaroo spotting at dawn or dusk.

Facilities: Picnic shelter at the bottom of the ascent. Dog friendly, but keep on a leash as there’s lots of wildlife.

Directions: At Yandina and at the roundabout turn into Ninderry Rd. Follow this until Eucalyptus Circle and look for a cement drive up to the car park on

the right. From the car park follow the 4WD track to the right up the hill. This goes up and down a few times until you reach a rocky section that you follow up. There is a turn in the path. When it eases off, follow the path through long grass and light forest to a tower site with great views. Brave rock hopping and light bush bashing for more excellent views.

BUFF-FOOTED ANTECHINUS M Y S T I C U S Kon Hepers, Cooroy (formerly Verrierdale) Every evening, for about three weeks, almost always between 6-6.30pm, a little furry creature raced past the sliding door to our back veranda. We only ever caught a glimpse but could tell it was much too fast for a mouse, had a more pointed head and shorter tail. It was almost certainly an antechinus.

We have had experience with antechinus nesting in our place before and definitely did not want a repeat of the mess made by these little invaders in the linen cupboard, various wardrobes, under the bed and elsewhere.

We also knew that in this area there were two species of antechinus – the Subtropical Antechinus, Antechinus subtropicus, (split out from the Brown Antechinus in 2010) and the Yellow-footed Antechinus, A. flavipes - the more common of the two. Which one were we looking at? It is illegal to set traps for native wildlife and we did not want to spend a few hundred dollars on a motionsensing camera, thinking the animal was far too speedy

to yield a photograph clear enough for identification. Then we had a lucky break – almost very unlucky. We make sure that we never leave pots or buckets of water standing around, especially at night since we have drowned a beautiful gecko and numerous insects. This time we had left a bucket containing maybe four centimetres of water in the laundry sink. Just before lights out we noticed a little animal submerged in the water but able to breathe by using its long, whiskered nose as a snorkel. We fished it out and placed it in an empty aquarium for observation to ensure it was OK before release.

It was also a perfect but difficult photo opportunity. The tiny antechinus was more interested in getting away. At first we said Yellow-footed Antechinus, but something didn’t quite fit – maybe the feet and lower fur were not yellow enough. We had just read that in Brisbane a new species of antechinus had been described and classified as recently as 2012.

R O TA RY S U P P O R T I N G E U M U N D I R U R A L F I R E B R I G A D E Duncan Sayers, Eumundi Sometimes we need to put our vehicles in tricky spots to try and get closer to the fire. At times this leads to a drive-it-like-youstole-it approach. The Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade Stunt Driving Team never shies away from such a challenge. However, our new Incident support vehicle – Eumundi 91 - has been a bit vulnerable. We really stretched the budget to purchase this vehicle, and we weren’t able to afford a bull bar. Fortunately, the Rotary Club of Eumundi have stepped in to assist, and gave us the money to kit out our 4WD with a new bull bar and lights.

and running raffles. Well this equipment is one tangible example of the community good all that fundraising can deliver.

We have a bunch of great community organisations in our little town. Some like ours are hands-on, working for a very specific purpose. But sometimes, money makes the world go around. Rotary steps in to make sure we can focus on our niche, without having to worry about rattling the can for specific projects.

We sent images to a number of professionals and had a response from Queensland Museum definitely identifying our catch as a juvenile Bufffooted Antechinus, Antechinus mysticus.

We wondered why it always ran past our door until we opened the cupboard in the garage where we store the camping gear, tools etc.

Every shelf was covered in droppings – not those easily swept-away ones that mice and rats leave, but long sticky ones that need to be scrubbed and washed off. We were almost sorry we had let it go! It is impossible to stop them coming into your house if they decide to be there.

Antechinus are small members of the Dasyuridae family which also includes quolls and Tasmanian devils along with all the other basically carnivorous marsupials. They are mousesized but have a pointy snout, daggy ears and a tail just short of their body length (mice have slim, tapering tails longer than

their bodies). They breed once a year in spring/summer and males expend so much energy in the process that after the mating frenzy they all die of stress related conditions. Females have a rudimentary pouch certainly not capable of accommodating a brood of up to a dozen young and probably drag the babies along attached to their nipples.

Small as they are, antechinus are ferocious carnivores: the main diet is arthropods but they are quite capable of running down small reptiles – even mice. The gecko population at our place is being rapidly depleted.

We still see the little Buff-footed Antechinus every evening and note that it is starting to take liberties beside polluting our garage shelves. When our sliding door is open it does not flash past but stops, pokes its long nose in, looks both ways and continues on. A few nights ago it sat on the door mat beside our dog. We hope it goes away soon (we are sick of cleaning up after it) and finds a nice hollow log in the bush somewhere.
