A HINTERLAND MOMENT Editor’s note ...

How nice is this drop in temperature? To not hide from the afternoon heat, have to sleep under a fan - or wake up sweating! We actually put blankets on the bed again – something a month ago wasn’t imaginable. It was a long, scorching, dry summer this year.

A long-time local told me they live here not for Summer but for Autumn and Spring – and I have to agree having warm days of swimming and gardening, then evenings with a hint of a chill worthy of a campfire, is lovely.

The rain has transformed the views from our tree houses from dry and brown into vistas with every shade of green. We love seeing the photos from your pocket of paradise.

Sala Thai Restaurant owner Jang Etheridge invited the community to celebrate this annual event with a feast, blessing ceremony, Miss Songkran competition, water ceremony and Thai dancing.

Mr Park shared that the Sunshine Coast’s Thai community is currently in discussions with Noosa and Sunshine Coast Councils in regard to establishing the first Theravada Buddhist Temple on the Coast.

Business TOWN WELCOMES NEW BREWER Last Tuesday afternoon The Imperial Hotel introduced Eumundi Brewery’s new Head Brewer Chris Sheehan to the town’s business folk with a meet and greet at the pub. On offer were tastings of two of the proposed beers: a fresh and lively Ginger Pale made using local produce from Templeton’s Ginger Farm, and a mid strength Summer Ale with plenty of body and amber notes. Chris was appreciative of the chance to road test the new brews with the Eumundi business community. “You guys are the experts and we want your honest feedback – we want to make craft beers that are really drinkable.”

Chris and his young family moved to the Coast last week from Sydney, where he was Head Brewer for James Squire at Malt Shovel Brewery. He will oversee installation of brewing equipment in the coming weeks and begin craft brewing on-site at the Imperial soon after. Chris was joined at the tasting by master brewer Dr Chuck Hahn, and assistant brewer Allan Tilden, also from James Squire. Both Allan and Chris said they felt very welcome here and were extremely impressed by the village vibe, friendly locals and good coffee!

High Use Permits will be awarded on 1 July for a threeyear term. These currently include learn-to-surf lessons, beach equipment hire, kite surfing, ice cream sales, massage, etc. Expression of Interest documents and submission requirements are available on Council’s website.

An appeal of Noosa Council decision to refuse a largescale Cooroy poultry farm application has been withdrawn. The Planning and Environment Court appeal had sought to overturn Council’s decision, subject to conditions.

Council refused the large-scale poultry farm proposal in 2015, citing conflicts with the Noosa Plan, insufficient distance from surrounding residences, traffic and amenity issues. It included eight sheds capable of housing 26,800 to 34,840 chickens, and with the potential to carry up to 230,000 birds. Powerlink Qld joined Council in the appeal given high voltage powerlines cross the site.

John Sargaison, Cooroy The Cooroora Woodworkers club will be holding their 28th annual Wood and Craft Show on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 May in the Cooroora Woodworkers’ clubhouse and surrounding precinct at 8 Lowermill Rd, Cooroy. The heart of the show is always the competitions: regional woodworking clubs compete in the Interclub Competition; school students compete in the Schools Competition and club members compete in their own internal Woodcraft Competition.

Each year the Lucas Mill, which is fitted with a horizontal chain saw, is brought to the show to demonstrate cutting logs into slabs so visitors can see the milling team in action. The mill is set up on the concrete slab adjacent to the Log Maze in the Lowermill Precinct. The cut slabs are offered for sale off the saw and seasoned slabs will also be for sale. The timbers milled vary but Camphor Laurel and Silky Oak are usually available as well as some rarer species.

Division 10 Some slabs have been surfaced making them ready for use as bar and table tops.

Woodworking is one of the oldest known crafts and the continuation of the craft and skills are of benefit to society, but also to the crafts person whose constant drive to perfection is a mental stimulus and a great health benefit.

Environmental concerns are always important and the club’s milling team saves many logs from around the Cooroy region to be recycled into useful timber. The show also increasingly reflects environmental issues.

Entry is $2 with under 16 years free.

It was a pleasure to join community and business leaders in Eumundi on Tuesday to welcome esteemed brewer Chris Sheehan (centre) to the Sunshine Coast, in his new role of Head Brewer at the new Eumundi Brewery. Chris brings a wealth of experience with him to this exciting new venture in Eumundi; if you get the chance I encourage you to stop in and responsibly enjoy a brew or two.

Terrace works will improve Eumundi market experience Works on the terraces will begin on Tuesday 2 May. Local builder, Brad Pike of Toobella Homes has been awarded the competitive tender for the works. The works are expected to take approximately four months to complete, during which time the terrace area will be a construction site. I appreciate the patience and understanding of stall-holders and market visitors during this time and thank you in advance for your assistance whilst the work is completed. This work will deliver a great outcome for the markets in the longer term, improving the sustainability and viability of the worldfamous Eumundi Markets into the future.

Three day festival to celebrate Sunshine Coast’s 50th birthday Eumundi will host a three-day festival that unites six community organisations and businesses in the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast with funding from council’s category B grant to assist with the event. Planned activities include local schools learning the history of the Sunshine Coast, photo displays, themed dress-ups, 60’s party, dance off, supper dance, grand parade, live music, vintage cars and cultural Indigenous activities. Applications for the second round of Category A grants of up to $2000 are now open and close Friday 19 May. Have your say to help manage parking I encourage you to take a look at the draft Parking Management Plan and draft Local Area Parking Plans and provide feedback by 5 May. While paid parking isn’t being considered for smaller communities of Yandina, Eumundi or Nambour, I appreciate that residents may work in, or regularly visit, other areas of the Coast and encourage them to have their say on this issue.

Council is actively listening to community concerns about current parking management issues, which has led to the development of these draft plans. You can view the drafts on council’s website or come along and let us know your thoughts on April 26 at Dick Caplick Park, 8-16 Napier Road Eumundi from 11:30am-1:00pm.

Art ist Spot lig ht E M B R O I D E RY A S M O D E R N A R T Using needle and thread has been perceived as traditional women’s work for thousands of years, but young embroidery artist Monique (Mon) Ellis has put a modern spin on this ancient craft. It was when she was researching textiles for a year 12 art project at Noosa District State High School that Mon discovered the striking artwork of American embroidery artist Jenny Heart.

“I decided to try embroidering a self-portrait - even though I’d never sewn before - and it turned out really well.”

“You can see in my first embroidery I followed Jenny Heart’s style – but from there I’ve created my own style,” she shared.

Mon explained she’s always loved drawing and

experimenting with mixed media. With the encouragement of her year 12 art teacher Mandy McGuire, Mon continued to explore long stitch embroidery as a creative medium – even though she’d never had any lessons. She shared that she started by doing simple designs and custom pieces for babies – flower wreathes with baby names.

When Mon discovered the evocative work of Agnes Richter she began to experiment with pushing boundaries. Agnes was a German seamstress who was committed to an insane asylum during the 1890’s and embroidered her thoughts and feelings onto her strait jackets.

“Embroidery is a way of expressing how I feel and documenting my life – as well as being fun and funky.”

“My embroidery work gave me a purpose – and I was constantly inspired!”

She then started developing her own designs. Her process is to do a drawing, transfer it onto fabric, then turn it into a unique embroidery piece. Mon said her real passion is embroidering faces. “I’ve always loved drawing them and find them so fascinating.”

“I love putting a spin on faces embellishing them with animal masks and stuff like that,” she explained.

“Although the embroidery I do isn’t about me, I put a piece of me into every one.”

GSLC GETS READY TO ROCK The five time Tony award nominated Broadway musical, Rock of Ages which was also made into a Hollywood feature film, will be brought to life

by Good Shepherd Lutheran College (GSLC) students from Years 8 to 12. According to Mrs Heidi Woodruff, Director of Music at GSLC, the musical promises to have the audiences singing along and dancing in the aisles.

“With a cast of more than 50 students, and also featuring the Good Shepherd Band of six members, it’s going to be

a big performance,” said Mrs Woodruff.

Mrs Woodruff is also full of praise for the team effort that goes into a production of this size. “The time, passion and dedication students, staff and parents have committed to making this production a success is inspiring.”

Danceform’s Kelsey Hannah spent her Easter holidays performing in the musical Grease to sell out audiences at the Brisbane Convention Centre as part of the mass ensemble. The Cooroy local auditioned for the part in August last year and has spent most weekends since December rehearsing.

Dance Form’s Principal Jaymee Haack shared, “Kelsey has been performing since an early age with her passion being Musical Theatre.”

When she finishes school, Kelsey’s dream is to find work in the competitive field of the performing arts. Kelsey is a grade 11 student at Noosa District State High School, dances at Dance Form Professional Studio as well as training with Performing Arts Factory and Hamburger Productions.

LION ENCOUNTER

While visiting the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Africa, I was privileged to participate in a lion encounter. Along with a small group of other visitors, I walked for over an hour through the bush with four cubs aged around six months of age - a truly amazing and memorable experience.

But there is an extremely important reason for this remarkable experience - these cubs are part of the “African Lion Rehabilitation and Release Into the Wild” program. Over the last 30 years the world’s lion population has decreased by 80% - 90%. In 2009, Kenyan authorities predicted extinction by 2018.

Lion populations currently exist in

isolated areas, and their long term viability is in doubt; they are now a vulnerable species. The African Lion Rehabilitation and Release Into the Wild program is Africa’s first genuine effort to reintroduce the offspring of captive lions into the wild.

Cubs born in breeding centres are bonded to human handlers, and from six weeks of age they

are taken out on walks into the wild. Their handlers act as the dominant members of the pride, which gives the young lions the sense of security they need to engage in natural behaviours.

On these walks the cubs have the opportunity to play, explore, specialise, and begin to develop their hunting instincts. By three years-old the lions are ready to enter the release stages of the program. They are released as a pride that becomes selfsustaining and develops a natural social system in a secure, semi-wild environment. These

Outdoors H E L P U N D E R S TA N D E N D A N G E R E D B L A C K C O C K AT O O S The community is asked to help support a glossy black-cockatoo research project, funded by the Glossy Black Conservancy.

Glossy black-cockatoos are mysterious birds, which makes species protection difficult. This project aims to shed light on the bird’s nesting habits. Noosa Council Environment Officer Tyron deKauwe explained, “With so many unanswered questions it is challenging to make informed decisions about improving breeding success rates - which is important given the species is threatened in Queensland.”

Residents can support the research project by reporting glossy black-cockatoo nest locations. The Conservancy is funding PhD student Daniella Teixeira of The University of Queensland to investigate bio-acoustic technology as a means of monitoring the birds.

“Daniella is using automatic sound recorders to capture the calling behaviour of the parents and the nestlings during nesting season,” Mr deKauwe shared.

This data will be used to develop methods that could assist with finding breeding locations, nest survival rates and

feeding habitat. If successful, bio-acoustic monitoring could be used as a method for longterm observation of glossy black-cockatoo breeding. Mr deKauwe asks any locals who see a trio of birds – a mum, dad and juvenile – to contact Daniella, as it might indicate nesting in the region. Mr deKauwe said residents could also help by submitting videos or sound recordings of glossies at nests, or of breeding pairs or trios when they’re not at the nest.

N atu re N otes N AT I V E G A N G S T E R S Kon Hepers, Eumundi They are recognised as the world’s most garrulous, chauvinistic and downright nasty birds. They are also smart, almost fearless and hang around in gangs. Like all gangsters they are fiercely protective of their “turf” and will challenge any other birds, large or small, that enter their exclusive territory. Not only birds, but possums, snakes, dogs, cats, even koalas are mercilessly harassed. That can be good... and bad.

Over the last five or six years we have travelled to and stayed in a fairly inner western suburb of Sydney. The place was overrun by that “flying cane toad”, the Common or Indian Myna. Not related to our native miners, these introduced pest birds had replaced all other birds in the vicinity with the exception of a few sparrows and feral pigeons.

Indian Mynas out-compete our natives for food resources, as well as suitable nesting sites particularly tree hollows.

Then the local Council planted native nectar-rich shrubs like grevilleas, banksias and bottlebrushes and after a couple of years we noticed a resurgence in native birds, especially honeyeaters, including a few Noisy Miners (generally called “Micky Birds”), who seemed to be giving the exotic mynas a hard time. Obviously we were witnessing a fight-back. We of course cheered for the natives.

Another couple of years and the scenario was different again. The local native Noisy Miners had bred up into several flocks (or gangs) of 30 or more birds and had chased off all other bird species, native and introduced. The area now sustained a mono-culture, albeit native, of Noisy Miners - a backwards step in species diversity.

The specific name for Noisy Miners is Manorina melonacephala, meaning ‘black-headed bird with large nostrils’.

Back at home in Eumundi, we

woke up one morning to strident calls from many birds. A gang of Micky Birds was dive-bombing a juvenile magpie and had already drawn blood. We stood over the young bird but that did not deter the birds; even when we picked up the magpie and held it in our hands the attack never ceased until we came inside. Ruthless! Many bird species have distinctive alarm calls to warn others of danger. The calls are “understood” by other species.

Noisy Miners have up to 12 distinctive calls, depending on the source of danger. They have a certain call for snake and a different one for goanna.

That is not so special – our dog had a very distinct bark for each of these two reptiles.

But where the Mickies are really clever is in uttering alarm calls specific to certain raptors (birds of prey). For example, hawks hunt in wooded areas and most of their prey is taken on or near the ground. Which means that for small birds safety lies in the air or in the tree tops. The Noisy Miners have a call warning that such a raptor is around and birds respond with evasive action.

Conversely, falcons take much of their prey on the wing by stooping through flying flocks of birds. Thus, safety from falcons lies more on the ground or amongst shrubs. Micky Birds have sorted that out with a different call for proximity of a falcon-type predator.

Other calls warn of other situations such as incursion by a neighbouring gang or the approach of humans. Some calls appear to be a call to arms summoning other birds to assist with attacking intruders.

Butcher Birds generally respond.

Their eternal vigilance seems not to extend to after dark.

When a gang camps for the night they are vulnerable in that many of them choose 17

Australia’s largest sustainable farm input company is right here on your doorstep! very low branches and can be approached without being disturbed. We have been able to lift them up by hand and place them on a higher/safer branch (out of reach of foxes) without any fuss.

Although there are frequent squabbles between individuals or groups of the birds, they nest communally with many birds (usually males who outnumber females by five to one) helping rear the chicks of a successful breeding pair. This is probably not so much in the spirit of generosity but more to curry favours with the scarcer females.

They also feed communally, never without quarrelling, collecting insects and other arthropods from foliage and the ground. Being in the honeyeater family one would expect them to have a “sweet tooth” and this is indeed so, as they harvest the sweet secretions from psyllid insects as well as nectar from native plants mentioned above. But some individuals have figured out that they can get a sugar hit more readily by simply coming to the outdoor tables of cafes, piercing those paper rolls containing the sugar and helping themselves. We have observed that at a number of places and can report that the birds seem to be health-conscious to a degree by favouring the raw sugar and not touching artificial sweeteners. (Maybe they just haven’t figured out the different packaging.)

Noisy Miners are increasing in numbers throughout their range, in a broad band along the eastern coast of Australia.

Their preferred habitat is the drier fringes of woodland but they are increasingly present in suburbia to the detriment of other native species.
