» FDOT removed rainbow crosswalk outside Pulse despite paying to repaint it last year

When Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer first announced a rainbow crosswalk would be installed outside of the former gay nightclub Pulse in 2017 the city had to ask the state Department of Transportation for a permit to do so. Orange Avenue, one of the intersecting roadways of the crosswalk, is a state-operated road, after all. As Orlando Weekly reported at the time, the Florida Department of Transportation approved the city permit that year, seemingly with no fuss. The city of Orlando fronted $2,900 for that crosswalk, which for years served as the city’s only interim memorial for the 49 victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting. As part of a larger Orange Avenue Improvement Project that kicked off last year, FDOT did, however, contribute state funds to help repaint the rainbow crosswalk — then suddenly, again using state funds, painted over the rainbow colors in the middle of the night last month. FDOT’s only explanation for the change of course is a change in policy that they claim came with input from local and state government officials. U.S. Department of Transportation secretary Sean Duffy (a Trump appointee) even followed suit by rolling out a similar ban on crosswalk art within days after FDOT sent threatening letters to Florida cities, telling them to get rid of roadway art they deemed noncompliant, or otherwise prepare to see their state funding withheld.

» Federal judge ruled the closure of Florida’s ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ must continue A federal judge in Miami is refusing to pause her order winding down the immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz” while the federal government appeals her ruling. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams previously ordered that no more immigrant detainees be sent to the detention facility. Attorneys for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had said in their request for a stay of that order that, if carried out, it would disrupt the federal government’s ability to enforce immigration laws. Two environmental groups, as well as the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, filed a lawsuit against the state and federal government immediately after they announced plans for the new detention facility. They argued the government failed to conduct the environmental assessments required by federal law before building and operating the facility. In a ruling made the previous Thursday, Judge Williams ordered that no more immigrant detainees be sent to the facility and gave both the state and federal government 60 days to move out existing detainees and begin removing temporary fencing, lightning features, and generators, gas, sewage, and waste and receptacles installed to support the project. Meanwhile, Florida Division of Emergency Management executive director Kevin Guthrie told a rabbi in South Florida in an email on Aug. 22 that “we are probably going to be down to 0 individuals within a few days,” according to reporting from the Associated Press. Gov. Ron DeSantis said the reduction in detainees is being led by DHS.

» Disney Epcot workers at Italy Pavilion said they’ll vote on potential strike action

Workers at Disney World Epcot’s Italy Pavilion announced last week that they plan to take a vote on whether to authorize a strike at Epcot as soon as Sept. 30, due to lack of progress made in union contract negotiations with their employer. Spread across Epcot’s Via Napoli, Tutto Italia and Tutto Gusto restaurants, the workers are technically employed by the Patina Group, a contractor that has an agreement with Disney to operate restaurants on its property. They’re represented by Unite Here Local 737, a labor union that represents roughly 19,000 workers in the local tourism industry. At a press conference last Tuesday, roughly two dozen workers and fellow union members repeated chants of “Sí, se puede” and the union’s signature slogan, “When we fight, we win!” According to the union, results of the strike vote will be announced Sept. 10. If workers vote to authorize a strike, they could be called upon to walk off the job as soon as their current contract expires Sept. 30, or any time after until they negotiate a new agreement that workers approve. If it goes through, this would be the first strike in history by restaurant workers on Disney World property, according to Unite Here. Current demands for their employer, the Patina Group, include an $8 raise over three years, free health insurance to replace their current insurance plan, a pension plan for workers once they retire, and a 20 percent auto gratuity on all customer checks to ensure workers receive a stable income.

» More than two dozen states backed Florida in fight over social media ban for kids

Pointing to a “significant interest in protecting children and youth from social media’s harms,” 27 states last week backed Florida in an appeals-court battle about a law aimed at keeping kids off certain social-media platforms. Attorneys general from the states, including Republicans and Democrats, filed a friend-of-the-court brief at the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals as Florida seeks to overturn a district judge’s ruling that blocked the law on First Amendment grounds. The law (HB 3), which was one of the biggest issues of the 2024 legislative session, seeks to prevent children under age 16 from opening social-media accounts on certain platforms — though it would allow parents to give consent for 14- and 15-year-olds to have accounts. Children under 14 could not open accounts. U.S. District Judge Mark Walker in June issued a preliminary injunction sought by a couple of tech-industry groups. The groups filed the lawsuit in October. Walker ruled the law likely violates First Amendment rights and cited the role of parents in policing social-media use. Florida quickly appealed Walker’s ruling to the Atlanta-based appeals court. The brief filed last week by the other states disputed Walker’s conclusion that the law did not meet First Amendment tests.

SUSPICIOUS MINDS

Florida CFO Blaise Ingoglia accuses Orange County employees of hiding info during DOGE audit

Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise

Ingoglia said last week that it was “probable” Orange County employees tried to hide information when his DOGE team began examining spending practices with the county government.

Therefore, he said, he was issuing investigative subpoenas to all county employees his office believes were involved in grant programs for DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) efforts.

Ingoglia made those remarks while speaking at a press conference with Gov. Ron DeSantis in Orlando.

DeSantis said some of the staff seemed to be reading from a prepared script, which he believes raises suspicions.

“They wouldn’t fully answer the questions and really left a lot of our folks not satisfied that they were getting all the answers that they could. So there’s a lot of different things

RIGHT GUARD

to unpack here,” the governor said.

DOGE auditors had received a tip from “someone inside county government” that employees were changing the names of files to obscure certain key words, Ingoglia said — specifically, diversity, equity and inclusion. His staff ended up gathering about 1.2 million emails related to six grants that had been given out for DEI programs. During the search of those million emails, he said, five of those grants were never alluded to.

“So, I wonder what happened with those emails?” he said. “So, it’s telling me that it is probable that we have county employees [who] tried to hide some of this information.”

_‘Freaking out’

Auditors with Florida DOGE — Department of Government Efficiency — have conducted onsite audits throughout the state since DeSantis named Ingoglia as chief financial officer in July, including Broward, Hillsborough,

Pinellas and Orange counties and cities like St. Petersburg and Gainesville.

Ingoglia suggested he was probably “freaking out Orange County employees” when describing the subpoenas and urged them when they are interviewed to be truthful. (He did not call out any employees by name during the press conference.)

“Don’t lie to us, because, if we have to, we will bring in FDLE and digital forensic units to find out exactly who did what, so please be truthful with us,” he said.

This is not the first time Ingoglia has claimed unnamed sources had informed his agency that local officials in governments targeted with DOGE audits have tried to delete or hide financial information, but this is the first time his office is going to investigate.

DeSantis and Ingoglia have been campaigning for more than a month on the promise that Floridians will vote on a proposed constitutional amendment in November 2026 that will either substantially reduce or outright eliminate property taxes for those who own homestead properties in the state — something no other state has ever done.

The measure is likely to be proposed during next year’s legislative session, although what it will say has not been determined at this time.

The two Republicans argue it’s important to detect any questionable spending now to get ahead of complaints by local government officials that reducing or eliminating property taxes would severely harm services like public safety.

DeSantis later dismissed comments by Orange County officials that they have complied with all of the requests made by Ingoglia’s DOGE team.

“The CFO would not have issued the subpoenas if all of the questions were answered,” the governor said.

“This is not performative. He wants answers and, under the law, he’s entitled to answers. And I know you haven’t seen CFOs necessarily flex those muscles in the past. This has been part of their authority for a long time.” He added that the CFO’s office received more authority regarding local government spending in the most recent state budget.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings released a statement shortly after this story was first published early Wednesday evening.

“Orange County Government fully cooperated with the Florida DOGE audit team providing all the data and documents requested. No employee was instructed to alter, change or delete any documents,” he said. “While our employees may have read from or referred to notes or documents being discussed by the DOGE team, employees were not scripted in their remarks. The state has offered no evidence to support its allegation that we were hiding information or acting without integrity. We welcome the opportunity for full public transparency on this issue.”

Taxpayer costs surged during DeSantis’ failed presidential campaign, report shows

Taxpayer costs to transport and protect Gov. Ron DeSantis and his family surged during the year that included much of his failed presidential campaign, according to state reports.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement annual reports show the state spent about $12.318 million during the 2023-2024 fiscal year and $11.146 million during the 2024-2025 fiscal year on transportation and security for the DeSantis family and visiting officials.

The 2023-2024 fiscal year included a substantial amount of the time DeSantis ran for the Republican presidential nomination. He dropped out of the race in January 2024. The reports were first reported and posted

by the USA Today Network.

A 2023 law shields from release detailed travel records of the governor and other state leaders. People covered by the law include the governor’s immediate family, the lieutenant governor, Cabinet members, the House speaker, the Senate president and the chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court.

The law also allows keeping from the public the names of people visiting the governor’s mansion on non-governmental matters.

The total amounts of spending in the new reports are up from the 2022-2023 fiscal year when costs reached $9.876 million and 20212022 when they were at $6.097 million.

The majority of the costs in 2023-2024

and 2024-2025 went toward guarding and transporting DeSantis and his family and protecting the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee. The state’s fiscal years run from July 1 through June 30.

In 2023-2024, $9.776 million went toward protecting the governor, with an additional $853,780 for First Lady Casey DeSantis and other members of the first family, and $1.44 million for securing the governor’s mansion.

The governor and first lady have three young children.

Transportation expenses accounted for $3.875 million of the costs involving the first family.

DeSantis’ announced his presidential candidacy on May 24, 2023, and he suspended the campaign on Jan. 21, 2024.

An additional $244,181 went toward 80 separate law-enforcement details related to dignitaries — mostly governors of other states — visiting Florida.

The largest single expense, $74,144, stemmed from the Democratic Governors Association winter meeting in Miami in April 2024.

The state also spent $10,794 to protect

then-Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. in late May 2024. At the time, the Department of Education was facing criticism over issues related to teacher pay and school closures.

In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, security costs for the governor decreased to $8.02 million, with the first family costs at $864,427 and protecting the governor’s mansion at $1.77 million.

Transportation accounted for $3.3 million of the costs.

There were also 113 protective details for visiting dignitaries, totaling $489,352.

The Republican Governors Association meeting in Fort Myers in November led to $185,643 in state law-enforcement costs.

President Joe Biden’s tour of Hurricane Helene damage in October, which included Air Force One landing at Tallahassee International Airport, required $2,336 in state law-enforcement costs.

As in past years, the report doesn’t outline how security details were staffed or how they operated.

BREAKING THE SURFACE

Mennello Museum dives deep with summer exhibition ‘Pool Party’

As a place of social gathering, swimming pools define the haves and have-nots by dividing who has access and who toils over them. To animals they’re just watering holes; to humans, a symbol of status and leisure. They can provide invigorating physical stimulation, while also serving as a place of solace, respite or meditation.

These thoughts are just a few that rise to the surface while viewing the Mennello Museum of American Art’s summer exhibit Pool Party, a group show where sensual glamour bumps up against social awareness, featuring emerging artists like Isca Greenfield-Sanders, Derrick Adams (see cover image) and Lynn Gomez alongside internationally renowned talents including Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Ed Ruscha and Alex Katz.

Pool Party is triumphantly idiosyncratic, one of

the most interesting shows in recent history. How did this show come about? What planted the seed?

Orlando Weekly spoke with Mennello director Shannon Fitzgerald and featured local rising star Ericka Sobrack for details and insight on the party.

Shannon Fitzgerald: I created the exhibition over the years; I conceptualized it off and on, thinking of pools and their evolution in the imagination of artists, and the phenomenon became more “American” the more I thought about it — beginning in the 1950s, through the 1970s — for delivery of promise, success, leisure and wealth. I started my research with the SoCal movement, [David] Hockney and other artists who sought out promise, open spaces and minds and ultimate creativity among beauty — and then again, places of respite and retreat: Palm Springs, Palm Beach, the Hamptons.

Orlando Weekly: This tracks — it’s less tiki and kitsch, and more like The Graduate, The Swimmer and White Lotus. The pool and leisure as an existential device.

Ericka Sobrack: The Pool Party theme is deceptively lighthearted — on the surface, it evokes leisure, luxury and the idealized American lifestyle. But that’s exactly what makes it such rich ground to explore more complex, even contradictory ideas.

How does your piece fit into this?

ES: My piece deals with vulnerability in spaces that are typically perceived as safe or idyllic. I’m interested in the quiet psychological tension that exists within these environments — the subtle undercurrents of voyeurism, the sense of being watched or exposed. Pools, to me, feel simultaneously familiar and alien, everywhere and nowhere. There’s something distinctly American about them, but also melancholic, even haunted.

Pool Party includes some heavy hitters in the art world. How does it feel to be exhibited among them?

ES: It’s truly an honor to be part of this exhibit, especially alongside artists like Hockney, Katz and Ruscha. Their work has had a huge influence on how we understand space, identity and the

$8

American landscape, so being included in this context is both surreal and deeply meaningful. I’ve studied and admired them. Their work has influenced generations, and it’s a thrill to be part of that dialogue, even in a small way.

One thing about identity and the American landscape in Pool Party is that it includes a wide swath of points of view from all communities.

SF: I have long worked with artists of color, as well as several individual artists, discussing and writing about the trans-Atlantic movement and the real fears, associations and stereotypes surrounding African Americans’ relationship to the ocean, water and pools. Early conversations — beginning two decades ago — with Keith Piper, Pope.L and most poignantly Radcliffe Bailey, about water and the Black diaspora, focusing on Black leisure and joy, inform much of Lamar Peterson’s work, with whom I also worked, akin to Adams’ work.

I saw a tiny [Jay] Lynn Gomez in Xican-a.o.x. Body [at the Pérez Art Museum Miami] about the Latinx and Indigenous experience across America, and I knew I wanted to include her manipulated collages about labor and identity from found magazines—a nod to women and collage as a medium. I have been following some of the more senior artists since the early 2000s and in school/training before that, and I knew I wanted to locate [Joel] Meyerowitz and [Slim] Aarons. I was looking at Stephen Shore’s road trip work, the hotel pools from the 1970s onward — he and Ruscha on the road, very Americana.

Like the way sunlight glistens off water, Pool Party slowly mesmerizes, even more so after repeated viewings. On the surface, the show sounds crowd-pleasingly commercial, and it is, but executed with an urbane eye and a sense of adventure. It’s as much about sun and fun as it is a social-studies observation that invokes self-reflection, and at the same time is subversively funny in the style of Wes Anderson and Stanley Kubrick.

Sobrack, in describing her own work, sums up the exhibit: “It challenges the traditional imagery of American suburbia. Not interested in nostalgia, more drawn to what’s unspoken, what lingers beneath the polished surface of the so-called American Dream.”

SHE’S OUR WITCH

Drag superstar Ginger Minj is ready to put a spell on her hometown with the wonderfully witchy Hokus Pokus Live

Ginger Minj is no stranger to the spotlight.

While this especially rings true after the Orlando drag icon’s recent win on the latest season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, her love of performing began right here in Central Florida before she could even walk or talk.

“I grew up on stage from the time I was six months old. My mom volunteered me to play the baby in Fiddler on the Roof at the Bay Street Theater in Eustis because it was free babysitting, and we were poor, and she couldn’t afford any kind of daycare, so she would volunteer me,” says Minj. She adds, “I created Ginger Minj in Orlando 25 years ago. They’ve seen the evolution of me from a talent-night queen to now the reigning champion

of All Stars 10 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. So to be able to share another milestone with the people that I love and respect is really special for me.”

After bringing home the All Stars 10 crown, the local drag legend is heading out on her Hokus Pokus Live tour, a theatrical extravaganza celebrating the world of Bette Midler film Hocus Pocus that Minj fell in love with as a child, and has now become part of her own performance repertoire after her role in 2022 sequel Hocus Pocus 2

“It’s the biggest and best version of this show that there’s been,” she says. “It’s fully fleshed out, it’s a two-act theatrical piece. Now there are original songs as well as songs people know and love from both of the Hocus Pocus movies, as well as

other surprise songs in there. There’s something for everybody.”

Minj — a queen of all trades — wrote, directed and is co-starring in the production. She’s joined onstage by fellow Drag Race legends Jujubee and Sapphira Cristál, as well as The Boulet Brothers Dragula’s Landon Cider.

Minj says she’s most excited for audiences to hear the show’s brand-new opening number, one she promises will knock them off their feet. The idea was first inspired by an interaction on set for Hocus Pocus 2, where Midler herself told Minj — who played a drag version of Midler’s Winnifred Sanderson onscreen — to “take this and do something with it. Run with it.”

The Sanderson sisters aren’t the only witches who have influenced Minj. All Stars 10 viewers thrilled to the show’s Wicked-themed episode, one that included guest judges Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, as well as Minj’s showstopping lipsync to the Broadway version of “Defying Gravity.”

Minj says that growing up as a Wizard of Oz fan helped shape her as a child, as her love of theater ended up inspiring her love of drag.

“That song just resonates with me so much, because I do feel like I have done consistently well in the world and in Drag Race and everything over the last 10 years, but I do feel like I get counted out or misunderstood or misconstrued a lot of the time. That song is really a testament to how I have felt through all of my Drag Race journey,” she

shares. “Maybe misunderstand me, but this is who I am, and this is my heart.”

Minj faced some cruelly unnecessary backlash after the conclusion of All Stars 10, with the internet’s unavoidable armchair quarterbacks chiming in about how the show must be so much easier for Minj than other contestants since she’s already competed four times throughout the show’s history.

“It’s funny to me, because that’s the complete opposite of my experience. I felt like it was the hardest competition I’ve done in the four seasons over 10 years,” Minj says. “I was 340 pounds at 5 feet, 3 inches tall. I was pre-diabetic. My blood pressure was through the roof. I was on all sorts of medications. I got pneumonia and ended up in the hospital because of COVID, and thought I was going to die. I was so sick, and that is what gave me the kick in the ass to get myself together. It’s so fun to watch the season for me. Well, maybe not fun, but it’s cathartic almost. To watch me go from my literal worst to my absolute best by the crowning. I think that it’s that resilience that has really resonated with a lot of people.”

Minj’s tour kicks off in Orlando shortly after the DeSantis administration has taken yet another swing at the city’s LGBTQ+ community in painting over the rainbow crosswalk outside the Pulse memorial. Local officials and members of the community have shown up day after day to protest and make their voices heard.

“We [drag queens] have been at the forefront of every big political movement. We have been the ones fighting,” Minj says. “Now that I have this global platform of being the reigning Drag Race champion, I’m going to use my voice as much as I can to make sure that the rest of us are being heard.”

Minj says that in the face of such a divided world, she wants Hokus Pokus Live to be a way for the audience to escape their troubles for two hours and share some joy and laughs with a group of likeminded people.

“Things that we don’t understand tend to scare us. Instead of learning more about who we are, why we are, what we are, they decide, ‘Oh no. It’s different, it’s scary. I don’t want to be a part of that, and I don’t want anybody I know to be a part of it.’ So that’s why we do what we do. That’s why we’re so loud. That’s why we ring the bells and wear the rainbows, so that people notice us. Doing something like Hokus Pokus Live, bringing it to the community for everybody, hopefully they can sit back and have a good time and realize we’re not so different.”

TASTEFUL NOODS

Southside noodlery Ji Bei Chuan offers a safe but satisfying peek of Yunnan fare

Mention the words “noodle house” and I start slobbering. There’s nothing quite like the anticipatory pleasure of staring into a bowl of squiggly starch: the digging in, the reckless abandon of slurping, the tail end of udon, lo mein or linguini lashing a cheek, the deep satisfaction of corralling unruly sustenance. In a world increasingly dumbstruck by lux, bedazzled by gold-flaked nigiri and studied plates blanketed in a haze of dry-ice smoke, noodles remain wonderfully anomalous — simple, cheap and ever-popular; enjoyed for thousands of years. Our timeless, universal love of noodles goes beyond the sensory and ritual; there’s science to it. Studies show eating them can stimulate endorphins and serotonin — can literally create happiness. And restaurants dedicated to food that makes you happy? My type of Zoloft. Although Chinese noodle house Ji Bei Chuan may be new to Orlando, it’s far from new; the franchise boasts over 400 locations in China and 50-plus in the U.S. It’s also far from (my) home: in the Lake Buena Vista area, where the buena vista is of I-4, where Ji Bei Chuan sits tucked in a fresh-out-of-the-box strip center, and where the noodle-sparked endorphins to

be had inside proved a necessary counter to the cortisol generated getting there.

Ji Bei Chuan rides a bit of an otaku arcade vibe with its Kaws statues, rope neon and plushy claw machine, but the name of its game is mi xian, smooth and slippery Yunnan rice noodles. While the menu is largely anchored in Chinese big-bowl soups, it also features nods to Korea, Japan and Thailand, the last unsurprising as the Dai minority of Yunnan are ancestors of the modern-day Thai.

Before noodles there were nibbles. We opted for Korean fried chicken wings ($8) and takoyaki ($5.99). The wings proved tasty and, true to Korean form, far lighter than the batter visually suggested. The octopus balls benefited greatly from a topper of shaved bonito and were an agreeably chewy exercise in texture, but I’m not sure we’d order either or any of the advance eats again. No need to cede belly room best filled by soup.

Ji Bei Chuan is synonymous with chicken and fish maw rice noodle soup ($16.50). For the uninitiated, fish maw is reconstituted swim bladder — a collagen-rich innard that serves much like tofu in that it has little flavor of its

JI BEI CHUAN 7750 Palm Parkway 407-778-1435 orlandojbc.com

own. A bit like the soup itself. Studded with corn, cloud ear mushroom, pieces of chicken and maw, we found it pleasingly rich but overly mellow, the chicken-ness of the broth only surfacing when the soup had largely cooled.

This was not the case with fish and sauerkraut rice noodle soup ($13.50), which popped with the vinegary tang of fermented greens and peppery spice. Likewise, a basic rendition of roast duck ramen ($18) was flavor-forward, featuring a quarter of regrettably chewy-skinned bird heady with five-spice in a creamy broth with soy egg, enjoyed with a caveat — the entire spectrum of roast duck ramen is pretty enjoyable. Finally, because the word mala also makes me slobber, a mala-spiced soup with beef slices and rice noodles ($14.50) made its way to table. The bland beef shavings swam in a punchy broth that would’ve benefited from more ma (numbing) to balance the la (spicy).

With all the soups, we found noodles did what noodles do (make us happy) while broths were basic but prime foundations for doctoring with Ji Bei Chuan’s table vinegar sauce or roasted chili oil, canvases on which to paint your preferred taste. This is simple, satisfying fare — an easy, solid bang-for-your-buck option if you live in the area, but not one exciting enough to pull you across town.

COUCHSURFING

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.

Premieres Wednesday:

Wednesday — The back end of Season 2 welcomes Lady Gaga as Nevermore Academy instructor Rosaline Rotwood. So we’re just coming out and admitting that this thing is basically Harry Potter now, huh? Because with a name like that, she couldn’t be more of a J.K. Rowling creation if she were monitoring the girls’ bathrooms to see who was packing a wand. (Netflix)

Premieres Thursday:

Countdown: Canelo vs. Crawford — Josh Brolin and Diego Luna narrate a docuseries that takes us behind the scenes of next week’s biggest fight. I mean, unless Taylor and Travis unexpectedly call it quits. (Netflix)

NCIS: Tony & Ziva — The first installment in the NCIS franchise to not air on CBS is a spinoff that finds former agents DiNozzo and David living in France and running a security company. And since it’s only being shown on Paramount+, that means none of us decent people are going to know what happens unless it becomes a plot point on South Park, right? (Paramount+)

The Paper — The folks who brought us The Office return with another single-camera mockumentary series that chronicles life within a dying industry. This time, it’s the newspaper business that’s the fulcrum for ridicule. And suddenly, I’m not seeing what’s so funny. (Peacock)

Pokémon Concierge — Haru’s job at the Pokémon Resort gets more complicated in these new episodes, when a guest arrives who forces her to confront the shadowy details of her personal history. Even worse, he won’t stop bitching that his room is too far from the ice machine. (Netflix)

Premieres Friday:

The Great British Baking Show — It’s Season 13 for the show that’s known as The Great British Bake-Off back home but can’t use that name here because “bake-off” is a registered trademark of the Pillsbury Co. Why are we bothering with tariffs when there are such better ways to f*** with these people? (Netflix)

Dish It Out — Gordon Ramsay’s daughter Tilly gets her own show, in which she’ll spotlight innovative recipes from top chefs and other

Premieres Monday:

Dr. Seuss’s Red Fish, Blue Fish — A new spate of programming based on the classic kidlit author’s works begins with an animated series for preschoolers, in which the title characters explore the idea of opposite concepts. You know, like “French Resistance” and an “artist’s cooperative.” (Netflix)

Her Mother’s Killer — Season 2 of this political thriller began airing in its native Colombia all the way back in May. So if you know anyone who’s already binged the 40-plus episodes that have dropped so far, tell them we don’t want any spoilers, please. And for God’s sake, get them some help with their cocaine problem! (Netflix)

Premieres Tuesday:

modern-day luminaries. And then her dad will come on to explain why they’re all offal on a plate and everybody responsible should be shipped off to Uganda. (Prime Video)

Inspector Zende — An escaped serial killer is on the loose in 1980s Mumbai, in what might be the unlikeliest Bollywood dramedy of the week. That is, unless somebody has a musical about Aileen up their sleeve. (Netflix)

Memphis to the Mountain — A group of Tennessee climbers accepts the challenge of scaling an extinct volcano in Kenya. At least they told them it’s extinct. If this show were on Shudder, there’s no telling what might happen! (Hulu)

Most Wanted: Teen Hacker — Learn the secrets of a computer-savvy kid who managed to ground a major airline flight, take PlayStation offline and pull off the swatting of an FBI agent. But then he got jumped by a bunch of teenage girls in Washington, D.C., and we all had to pay through the nose for it. (HBO Max)

Premieres Saturday:

Confidence Queen — Korea offers its own take on the hit Japanese series about a crafty woman who forms a team of experts to play Robin Hood against the corrupt. And if that in turn strikes you as uncomfortably reminiscent of Leverage, you obviously don’t understand the global entertainment economy. Honestly, it’s like you never bought a DVD off a blanket in a major subway station. (Prime Video)

Premieres Sunday:

The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity — Romeo and Juliet meets Titletown High in an anime blender, as a couple of kids struggle

Guts + Glory — Walking Dead kingpin Greg Nicotero presents a reality competition that spurs the contestants to conquer their deepest, darkest fears. Which is kind of what’s already going on on Love Island, if your greatest fear happens to be emotional intimacy. (Shudder and AMC+)

Jordan Jensen: Take Me With You — The Brooklyn-based comic uses her first hourlong special to skewer the problematic concept of “self love.” Hey, “problematic” doesn’t begin to cover it. How can one activity ruin Paul Reubens’ career but make Sabrina Carpenter a superstar? (Netflix)

Kiss or Die — More genre-bending fun from the Japanese, with a bunch of male comedians having to improv their way through elaborate scenarios that hopefully end with them delivering the perfect kiss. But if they succumb to the temptation of grabbing a “cheap” snog with an eager co-star, they’re eliminated immediately. If the moral distinction there eludes you, you can always opt for the simplicity and clarity of watching someone on Shudder eat a bowl full of worms. (Netflix)

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 — The death of Lester the doorman plunges our intrepid sleuths into the shadowy network of criminal interests that truly runs Manhattan. But don’t worry, because all of that is going to change as soon as Andrew Cuomo has the commie bumped off. (Hulu)

Thirst Trap — Learn the plight of TikTok sensation William White, whose followers developed an unhealthy emotional obsession with him. Fortunately, with the help of extensive and sympathetic psychological counseling, they all turned out OK, and now they run fan clubs for entirely AI pop bands. (Paramount+)

CULT HEROES

Bayside kick off 25th anniversary tour with two nights in Orlando

“It’s not cool to like us, and you don’t want to make it cool to like you, because then they might not actually like you. They’re just saying they like you.”

Anthony Raneri, founder, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of stalwart punk band Bayside, knows who he is and why he makes music. At this moment, he’s in his living room in Franklin, Tennessee, gearing up for the third leg of the band’s worldwide 25th anniversary tour, archly named “The Errors Tour” and kicking off at Orlando’s House of Blues this weekend.

Founded in their namesake neighborhood Bayside, Queens, in New York City, the band is playing two back-to-back nights in Disney Springs with two different sets, featuring B-sides, deep cuts and songs they haven’t played live in over a decade.

Night one is set to include songs from Sirens and Condolences, Self-Titled, The Walking Wounded and Shudder. The second night will feature songs from Killing Time, Cult, Vacancy, Interrobang and the band’s most recent release, There Are Worse Things Than Being Alive.

“Bayside is a cult” is a phrase devoted fans across the world have tattooed to their bodies, and based on the anticipation for this tour, the devotion and desire remains strong.

“We always say ‘change the sightlines,’ give the audience a different look every year. … We’ve always tried to walk the line of celebrating the back catalog, while also celebrating the new stuff too … not digging too deeply into nostalgia, while also kind of respecting it,” says Raneri. “So we thought that a cool thing for this tour would be to really lay it all out there and celebrate all

the old on one night and all the new on another.”

It’s this intentionality paired with authenticity Raneri credits for the band’s longevity.“Slow and steady has always been the way that we try to do things,” he says. “Just do good work, make good music, play good shows, don’t jump on trends and just stay the course. Just be us.”

Raneri continues, waxing philosophical. “Not since the beginning of the music industry has any amount of money or record label or radio station or anything been able to force people to listen to something if they don’t like it. You can have all the money in the world and all the power in the world, but you can’t force people to listen to something that’s not good,” he says.“The image is important, the social media following is important. The clicks are important, but it is not the most important thing, because what are you going to give them once you have all their attention?”

Rejecting industry pressures and creating their own sound has helped the band stay fresh, retaining longtime loyal fans while growing their base. Their sound is uniquely Bayside, punk at its core but drawing inspiration from an array of sounds. Says Raneri, “A lot of Bayside records have been like, ‘What if we took showtunes and made them fast?’ … So now it’s

7 p.m. Saturday-Sunday., Sept. 6-7

listening to a lot of thrash metal and traditional klezmer music, and saying,‘Well what if we combine those somehow?’”

Raneri muses that it’s a full-circle moment playing the stage at the House of Blues. In the early years, booking Orlando venues like the Social or Will’s Pub were breakthrough moments. They cut their teeth in Central Florida towns like DeLand, Lakeland and Melbourne. “We have some friends in Melbourne who actually have a really funny story. … Somebody that they knew said that Bayside was probably the biggest band to ever come out of Melbourne, because they assume we were from there. Because that’s how often we played down there.”

Joking aside, “Brevard County’s Bayside” does have a nice ring to it.

GOOD IMPRESSION

LOCAL RELEASES

We’re living in a cesspool boiling over with rage, animus, anxiety and despair, somewhere between 1984 and Idiocracy. The only measurable happiness around right now is a kind laced with hate. Oh, what a fucking time to be alive. Is there even place for peace, or even hope, anymore? It’s a good existential question, one that Orlando jazz musician Gerald Law II looks to answer with his brand-new album.

The Who We Are LP first took form in 2020. In the throes of a biblically bad year with the compounding effect of a worldwide pandemic and the dystopian wreckage from Trump’s first term, Law began writing. From a grim American reality marked by police killings of Black people like Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, the album would become a channel, a statement and, hopefully, a salve.

Now it’s finally seeing release, when we find ourselves back in the same Orwellian mire that’s only gotten more septic this time around. “Unfortunately, the messaging is still as relevant [in 2025] as it was in 2020, or in 2012, or in the 1950s,” Law says.

Here in the Great Repression where the

with grace and gravity. Although occasionally lined with R&B and soul, Law leans deeply into his jazz roots here. There are extended lyrical passages (“Family,” “Good Friend”). But mostly, the lyrics are poignantly, poetically brief or even absent altogether, as if acknowledging that words can only go so far and that the music would be the connective essence that’ll ultimately bring us home.

Still, the words herein are imbued with powerful purpose, coming from many voices both sung and spoken. Even in the song titles — “Human,” “Mothers,” “Fathers,” “Sons,” “Daughters,” “Sisters,” “Brothers,” “Family,” “Good Friend” — the words focus on humanity. They stand blunt and simple, like monolithic truths in a blurred, messy world.

In contrast, the arrangements are a lush jazz tapestry of brass (trumpet, saxophone, trombone), keys (piano, organ, keyboards), strings (violin, viola, cello, guitar, bass) and percussion (drums, vibraphone). Even when troubled like on the cinematic “American Black,” the music never loses its studious dignity. Who We Are stands tall and poised in the precarious storm, a beacon that’s both a mirror and an antidote for the zeitgeist. It’s a noble MLK-esque stance in decidedly Malcolm X times. Law’s path is the righteous one, of course. Will it prevail in this age? I’m not sure. But I hope he’s right.

Who We Are is a socio-personal opus that proves there are few better young exemplars of Black excellence in Orlando than Gerald Law II. The album now streams everywhere, and the release concert next week is at Judson’s Live (7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, $29.21-$41).

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Is there a place for peace, or even hope, anymore? It’s a good existential question, one that Orlando jazz musician Gerald Law II looks to answer with his brand-new album Who We Are

grapes of wrath are swelling to a new brink, a blistering diatribe would be reasonable, expected even. Instead, Law puts the universal ahead of the personal, opting more for messages of connection and solidarity. “Yes, there is pain expressed in this album,” he says. “But there is also hope, reflection and love for others.”

In the face of the ugliest hysteria that America’s seen in generations, Who We Are steps

Will’s 30th anniversary kickoff: This weekend launches the weeklong fête celebrating the 30th anniversary of one of the city’s most defining and storied music institutions. Will’s Pub is synonymous with Orlando music history and the nights’ lineups reflect that heritage. Friday’s kickoff features legendary lounge punks The Delusionaires alongside young punk risers The Drop Deads, Double Bubble and S.M.O.P. Saturday’s roots-centric roster features all-star group The Downgetters, Skinny McGee and the Handshakes, Patrick Hagerman, Big Jef Special, and Kaleigh Baker. Lucero: Few touring acts are as dear to Orlando as Memphis country-rock paragons Lucero. And their 2005 album Nobody’s Darlings is particularly dear here. Besides being a classic that’s Lucero at their best vintage, it’s of an era when they were touring through with such frequency that they were practically local, a grand old time that led to frontman Ben Nichols moving here for a while. They’re celebrating that album’s 20th anniversary, so line up those shot glasses now. (6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, The Social, $29.50-$104.50) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

Garbage

Nineties alt-rock rampagers Garbage are hitting the road in the U.S. for their first headlining run in a decade on this, the “Happy Endings” tour. And it has a very happy beginning: right here in Orlando. The Shirley Manson-led dreamgaze band take their latest album, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light, across the country, but we’re hearing it first at the Hard Rock Wednesday. Now, sadly this will also be a night of lasts as well: as in, the band’s last (?) headline tour stateside. “Let’s just go out and have an amazing time and support our new record and play all the music that everybody loves. And hopefully we’ll get to do it again, but there’s no guarantees,” Shirley Manson told Flood Magazine. So last chance to scream along to “Stupid Girl” or “#1 Crush,” you’ve been warned. 8 p.m., Hard Rock Live, 6050 Universal Blvd., entertainment.hardrock.com, $71-$307. —

Kali Uchis

Family, stability and vulnerability underpin Grammy-winning singer Kali Uchis’ “Sincerely, Tour,” as she makes her way, with a new baby in tow, to the Kia Center. Returning to the road after the birth of her second child, the ColombianAmerican singer-songwriter writes “songs as letters,” penning anthems of womanhood, kinship and new beginnings. After a decade of making music, she dedicates her fifth album, Sincerely, to her mom, who passed away from lung cancer in April, only a short time before the album’s release. As multiple tour dates continue to sell out, “The Sincerely, Tour” setlist features a mix of songs from the new album as well as some classic top hits that showcase her “genre-defying sound and bilingual artistry.” 8 p.m., Kia Center, Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $50-$350. — Azlyn Cato

15 Years of Burrow Press

Upstart local lit imprint Burrow Press knows their way around fostering new adventurous literary talent and throwing a mean party. The former quality has helped them build up an essential library of bleeding-edge tomes by authors like Ariel Francisco, Leah Sandler and Pat Rushin over 15 years of bucking against the spurious defeatism of print-is-dead. And the latter will help them mark this milestone in style at the Nook. So put on your Sunday best and amble over to the Milk District for a “quinceañera-ish” anniversary soiree. Teege Braune will be guest-bartending, Jared Silvia of Earth Fault DJs ambient music, Ryan Rivas will say a few words (sadly not in a coyote mask) and a passel of Burrow writers will be in the house — though not reading! More surprises TBA. 5 p.m., The Nook on Robinson, 2432 E. Robinson St., facebook.com/thenookonrobinson, free. — MM

Austin’s Benefit Slumber Party

Despite time running out on their current Winter Park lease and the city positively slavering over the prospect of turfing them, Austin’s Coffee is still being Austin’s. The bohemian haven this weekend hosts an intimate late night of music, showcasing local and emerging artists. The lineup includes Oliver Mars Green, Zozingbo, John Miles, Zayne and Nursing — a mix of indie, folk and leftfield ambient sounds. The show is slumber party-themed to conjure a cozy lullaby atmosphere, but is not, in fact, an all-nighter. And the artists get sonically gentle for a good cause: Proceeds go to the Save Austin’s Coffee campaign to help the venerable venue in its next chapter, whatever that may be. 7:30 p.m., Austin’s Coffee, 929 W. Fairbanks Ave., austinscoffee.com, $5-$10. — Emmy Bailey

4th Annual Trans & Nonbinary Family Picnic

Bring out the entire fam (and perhaps a few picnic blankets or folding chairs) for a day of fun, games and inclusivity. Come Out With Pride Orlando invites all to get leisurely at the fourth annual Trans and Nonbinary Picnic at the Fairgrounds. Open to members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies alike, this event brings friends and families together to celebrate community spirit and connection — a much-needed reminder that these values endure and thrive in the City Beautiful, even in such hostile times. Pack some snacks — food tickets have already sold out — and enjoy music and outdoor activities in the name of kindness and acceptance, under a privately secured and shaded pavilion. RSVP is required, and free parking is available to attendees. 11 a.m., Central Florida Fairgrounds, 4603 W. Colonial Drive, comeoutwithpride.org, free. — AC

Boulet Brothers Dragula

The blood-soaked stars of Boulet Brothers Dragula, the dystopian double of Drag Race, are headed to Orlando as part of their Season 666 tour — and this is important for many reasons: 1, Dragula matriarchs the Boulet Brothers will well and truly herald spooky season here in Orlando. And 2, speaking of Orlando, locals have a big stake in the horror-drag reality competition as Victoria Elizabeth Black of Black Haus competed in Season 2 way back and then won Dragula Titans in 2022. This particular touring troupe features the Boulets and alumni Asia Consent (winner of Dragula Season 6), Grey Matter and Auntie Heroine, along with special guests at each stop. (Fingers crossed Victoria might haunt the Plaza.) Only Florida stop, so you know what to do, uglies. 8 p.m., The Plaza Live, 425 N. Bumby Ave., plazaliveorlando.org, $50. — MM

She first broke big by posting raw vlogs and covers to YouTube and TikTok, where her candor and talent captivated a massive fan base. album that confronts themes of sexuality, generational trauma and self-discovery. Pregame with standout singles “Blue Strips” and “Gucci Mane” and go from there. The future, as it is, just might be hers. 8 p.m., Hard Rock Live, 6050 Universal Blvd., entertainment.hardrock.com, $108-$458. — EB
