» Orlando to install new red light cameras to curb reckless driving Orlando city commissioners last week gave final approval to the expansion of a controversial program that fines drivers caught running red lights. The city currently has cameras set up at just 25 (or 5 percent) of Orlando’s intersections with traffic signals, but will now be expanding that to 80. Drivers caught by one of these cameras crossing into an intersection after the light turns red face a fine of $158 mailed to the address associated with their vehicle’s license plate. If you don’t pay the fine within 90 days, you face a steeper fine and a uniform traffic citation. The program, first launched in 2008, is meant to increase traffic safety and reduce fatalities, although the actual data shows flimsy results on this front. While certain (admittedly more dangerous) crashes sometimes decrease with these kinds of programs in place, the number of other types of crashes, including rear-ending, can often go up. The revenue collected by the program (millions of dollars each year) is split between the city and the state government.
» Orlando airport held a food drive for federal workers affected by government shutdown
The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, the agency overseeing the Orlando International Airport, held a brief food drive last week to help support federal government employees (including TSA officers and air traffic controllers) who are being forced to work without pay as the federal government shutdown drags on. Although federal workers are supposed to receive back pay once the government reopens, the White House under Trump has cast doubt on whether they actually owe workers back pay, and it’s still unclear when the government will in fact reopen. The main disagreement between Congressional Republicans and Democrats at this juncture is funding for healthcare and the expiration of tax credits for ACA Marketplace health plans that have helped make health insurance more affordable for millions of Americans in recent years. If the tax credits expire, monthly healthcare premiums for those who purchase plans through the Marketplace could more than double. The government shutdown began Oct. 1.
» Local Dems filed legislation to help domestic violence survivors flee abuse
Two Orlando-area Democratic lawmakers — Rep. Johanna Lopez and Sen. LaVon Bracy Davis — have filed identical bills for consideration during the 2026 state legislative session that would strengthen anti-discrimination protections for victims and survivors of domestic violence and stalking. Under the proposed legislation (HB 107/SB 142), Florida landlords would be strictly prohibited from evicting survivors of domestic violence because of the abuse or violence committed against them. Survivors, with accompanying evidence, would also be allowed to terminate a rental agreement early in order to leave an abusive home situation. Lopez, the House bill sponsor, is a survivor of domestic abuse herself and said the goal is to protect the safety and dignity of survivors, while also offering balance for landlords. Landlords, under the proposal, would still be able to collect up to 30 days’ rent from the tenant, should they seek to terminate their lease early. The 2026 legislative session begins Jan. 13. The legislation would need to gain approval from three legislative committees plus majorities in both the Florida House and Senate.
» Doctors plead with Florida lawmakers to resist ban on vaccine mandates
A bipartisan group of state lawmakers heard from nearly a dozen doctors last week who called on them to reject any proposed legislation that would remove vaccine mandates from Florida schools. Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo and Gov. Ron DeSantis announced last month that they intend to drop all required vaccine mandates for children, including those required for school attendance such as polio, measles and chickenpox. Ladapo already holds authority to remove some vaccine requirements by simple rule changes. That means that starting in early December, school vaccinations will no longer be required for hepatitis B, chickenpox, haemophilus Type B (Hib) and pneumococcal conjugate virus. Others, however, including poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps and rubella, are still in place and won’t be removed unless the Legislature opts to do so when it convenes for its 2026 session in January. Dr. Ed Homan, a former Republican member of the Florida House, noted during the panel how highly contagious a disease like measles is and feared what could happen if an unvaccinated child spent time at Disney World or Universal Studios Orlando.
» Alligator Alcatraz appeal paused due to government shutdown Environmental groups’ request that a federal court shutter the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center was paused last Wednesday because of the government shutdown. Led by the nonprofit Friends of the Everglades, a coalition of activists had asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit to reconsider its September decision to keep open the migrant detention center, located in the heart of the Everglades, despite environmental concerns. But the court agreed with the Department of Homeland Security that the case should be paused until government attorneys can work again. Friends of the Everglades, the Center for Biodiversity and the Miccosukee Tribe filed suit over the summer alleging the detention center violates federal environmental laws. A district judge agreed, ordering Florida to shut down the center by September’s end. But a federal three-judge panel on Sept. 4 reversed that decision, noting that because the site had not received federal dollars, and was entirely state-run, federal environmental regulations don’t apply. A week later, DHS and Florida Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie revealed that Florida had applied for federal reimbursement — though Friends of the Everglades believes the request was made earlier. On Sept. 30, the state received more than $608 million to pay for the construction, transportation and equipment costs of the facility. “There’s a growing mountain of evidence that Alligator Alcatraz was built in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act,” said Eve Samples, executive director of the Friends of the Everglades, in a statement. “Meanwhile, the government is dragging its feet in court to dodge accountability — using the federal shutdown as an excuse to delay the appeal.”
THE HUNGER
Florida Democrats urge the state to take action as millions face delayed SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
Millions of low-income Floridians who receive food stamp benefits through the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, including veterans and the elderly, could see their benefits for November delayed if the U.S. government shutdown stretches into November — and Florida Democrats are calling on Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to take action.
“Nearly 3 million Floridians who rely on SNAP benefits are at risk of going hungry on November 1, including 1.5 million children,” Florida Democratic Party chair Nikki Fried said in a statement.
“Governor DeSantis can stop this, especially as the holidays approach. For the price of shutting down Alligator Alcatraz, he can ensure that Florida families have food on the table this Thanksgiving,” she added, referring to the new and hastily built immigrant detention camp in the Everglades that has faced harsh rebuke and legal challenges from environmental groups and immigrant rights advocates.
Florida is one of at least 25 states across the U.S. that have warned of upcoming delays or missing payments to SNAP beneficiaries if Congress doesn’t agree on a federal budget, Politico reports.
During the last government shutdown in 2018, also under President Trump, the federal government disbursed SNAP benefits early, in order to avoid this potentially-devastating scenario. That’s off the table this time around.
“If the federal government shutdown continues into November, SNAP benefits for the month of November will not be issued until federal funding is restored,” the Florida Department of Children and Families, the state’s administration of the SNAP program, warns on its website. “You may receive notices about your eligible benefit amount, but you will not receive any benefits deposited to your EBT card during this time.”
Florida Rep. Anna Eskamani, a progressive Democrat from Orlando, said it’s “easily” within the power of DeSantis to take action.
“If you are governor, you could easily call for a state of emergency on hunger,
on food insecurity, and then allocate your emergency dollars like he’s been doing for immigration,” Dr. Eskamani told Orlando Weekly in a phone call. “It really just comes down to, you know, prioritization.”
Under Florida statutes, a state of emergency “must be declared by executive order or proclamation of the Governor if she or he finds an emergency has occurred or that the occurrence or the threat thereof is imminent.”
DeSantis most recently expanded a state of emergency order pertaining to hurricane preparedness to immigration in order to build the immigrant detention camp in the Florida Everglades, designated “Alligator Alcatraz” by the state.
Eskamani said that DCF could also request emergency state funding from the Florida Legislature in order to fill the federal funding gap and, consequently, the bellies of low-income adults and families who benefit from the program.
“I would argue that with the type of money that Florida has already spent on immigration enforcement, we absolutely — if we wanted, if state government wanted to cover the gap — we absolutely could,” she said.
U.S. Congressman Maxwell Frost, D-FL, similarly penned a letter addressed to
for Florida families. “I am calling on the Trump Administration to continue to provide Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits during the government shutdown. But our residents deserve a plan in the case that President Trump lacks the willingness to deliver,” Frost wrote.
“With the Republican Congress and Republican President sentencing the nearly 42 million Americans in need of SNAP to food insecurity, it is necessary that Florida’s state government does not second this indifference to the suffering and slow violence of that food insecurity,” he added.
A precarious position
The Florida Department of Children and Families is the state administrator of SNAP, a welfare program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that is meant to help low-income families afford food. Critics of welfare have disparaged the program as a costly “handout,” while welfare advocates argue that the benefits are insufficient, since they’ve failed to keep up with rising food costs.
The federal government shutdown began Oct. 1 when Congress was unable to pass a federal budget. Democrats are

demanding Republicans agree to extend enhanced tax credits that have made health insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace more affordable for millions of Americans, while Republicans
have denied requests to negotiate until the government reopens.
Without the extension of the ACA subsidies, monthly healthcare premiums for Americans who don’t receive insurance through an employer or other government program could more than double. The cost of employer-provided healthcare is also projected to rise at the fastest rate in 15 years, due in part to expiring federal tax credits.
“At the end of this year, if Congress doesn’t do its job, we are going to see 25 million Americans have their healthcare costs go up anywhere from 50 to 300 percent,” Congressman Frost said at a recent Healthcare Over Billionaires rally at an Orlando union hall.
That could amount to hundreds or even thousands of dollars more for health insurance per year, according to a KFF analysis. Yet, if the government shutdown continues, the ability of more than 40 million Americans, including 2.8 million Floridians, to buy food through SNAP is also at risk.
“We know supports like food stamps and housing subsidies help many low-wage working families to maintain housing stability,” Martha Are, CEO of the Homeless Services Network of Central Florida, told Orlando Weekly.
“Families that are facing the loss of one or both of these benefits will absolutely be at greater risk of becoming homeless,” she said.
Qualifying households for SNAP include individuals and families earning up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level — equal to $31,300 for an individual or $64,300 for a family of four. In Florida, most SNAP recipients are also subject to stringent work requirements, with the exception of people with disabilities, students, and parents or guardians of young children.
Formerly known as food stamps, SNAP can serve as a lifeline for low-income adults and families who can’t afford to buy groceries (remember the peak cost of eggs?) otherwise. Martha Are worries that the program’s delay could force families into difficult spending decisions, e.g. “Do I pay my rent this next month, or do I keep my child’s belly full?”
Beneficiaries who are already experiencing homelessness, Are said, “will be left in the precarious position of trying to access food pantries and soup kitchens to avoid going hungry — time they could have spent looking for work or housing.”
Stephanie Palacios, director of advocacy and government relations for Central Florida’s largest hunger relief organization, Second Harvest, admitted that a freeze
on SNAP benefits would “have a huge impact.”
“One in seven Central Floridians is food insecure, and one in six of those individuals are children,” Palacios pointed out in a phone call. “So these are our neighbors, these are families who are working one and two jobs, or seniors who are homebound, or seniors who are on a fixed income and may not be able to adjust to high grocery prices at the grocery store.”
Second Harvest, an affiliate of Feeding America, has contracted with DCF since 2008 to help low-income Floridians apply for SNAP benefits, so they’re well aware of the stakes. The nonprofit distributes enough food for about 300,000 meals per
second-longest in U.S. history so far — continues.
At least 750,000 of the federal government’s 2.1 million workers, meanwhile, have been furloughed without pay, as hundreds of thousands of others — save for a few Trump-favored exceptions — have been forced to continue working, also unpaid. In Central Florida, tens of thousands of federal workers are impacted.
“The Trump Administration wants every federal worker to be paid — that’s why we have repeatedly urged the Democrats to reopen the government and stop hurting the American people,” a White House spokesperson told the Washington Post, in response to criticism over Trump authoriz -

day through their main warehouse on Mercy Drive and through partner agencies throughout the region.
Over the course of the government shutdown, Palacios said their partners have seen “a heightened need already,” but emphasized that they’re here to support Central Floridians, including SNAP recipients, who find themselves in need. “We’re committed to sourcing additional food as funds and community resources become available,” she said.
Will Gov. DeSantis act?
The Executive Office of the Governor, when asked about the possibility of a state of emergency over the issue, simply told Orlando Weekly that staff had forwarded our questions to DCF. Florida DCF did not respond to our request for comment on whether they planned to request emergency state funding in time for publication. The SNAP program works by delivering benefits electronically to recipients onto an EBT card. Florida DCF notes that there “are no anticipated impacts” to October benefits.
The department will also continue to process and accept new applications, even if the government shutdown — the
ing funding to pay some, but not all, federal employees during the shutdown.
“The Trump Administration is working day and night to mitigate the pain Democrats are causing — including by paying the troops and funding food assistance for women and children,” the spokesperson claimed.
According to the nonpartisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, more than half of Florida’s SNAP participants are in families with children, and nearly three-quarters (74 percent) have a total household income below 100 percent of the federal poverty level, equal to $32,150 for a family of four.
Where to find help
Second Harvest has an online tool for Central Florida residents who are searching for a nearby food pantry. Here’s how to find a food pantry (and hours of operation) near you:
— Go to feedhopenow.org and click on the “Find Food” tab; this will direct you to their Food Finder. Enter your ZIP code and your address to find a food pantry near you, including a phone number to call if you have any questions.

Ednah’s
Gorey
and Glory Fashion Show spotlights horrifyingly creative young designers and models
BY AZLYN CATO
’Twas the night before Halloween, when all through Conduit, many creatures were stirring, even a … punk-rock Frankenstein’s monster?
In a truly frightful fashion, haute couture taking on campy horror films and eerie classics is exactly what’s in store for audiences with Ednah’s Gorey and Glory Fashion Show this Devil’s Night. Leaning far askew from the typical runway show, each model will embody a hybrid of alternative subculture and horror, whether it be a hapless victim or a creepy doll.
The mind behind all of this madness is Ednah Miller, executive producer and creator of the show. The idea came together after one of Miller’s many “what if” contemplations. As an avid lover of horror and drag, Miller says she didn’t simply want to put on a fashion show.
She wanted to create an experience.
“I want to inspire people. I mean, yes, I kind of want to gross people out a little bit, but it’s the same thing that a film director would want to do,” says Miller. “Stephen King is a good example for horror movies. They don’t want to just make you have a jump-scare a little bit. No, they want to tell a story. And that’s what I’m doing, telling a story.”
The show is comprised of two separate acts, a murder category and a monster category. In the murder category, the models portray people who have died in mysterious and unbelievable ways. If you’re a real horror fan, like Miller, you’ll be able to catch all the references intertwined within the art.
The monster category features high-fashion takes on iconic creatures of the night, paired with intense music and flashing lights.
“There’s a total shift in the vibe. You go from
feeling bad for the person that you’re seeing in front of you to, like, extremely scared. Which is the point,” says Miller. “I wanted to give a very dominating, intimidating vibe with these characters.”
Despite her involvement in numerous fashion shows and projects throughout the years, the Gorey & Glory show will be Miller’s first time acting as an executive producer. Though she majored in business at UCF, her love for fashion started while watching her grandmother put together intricate and color-coordinated outfits before going out. It also came from an early obsession with the art of drag she saw on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Miller says that one of her biggest influences in creating the show has been drag — specifically, the ability of drag performers to tie seemingly clashing pieces together and turn something that might look insane into something beautiful. Considering horror to have this same strange type of beauty, she wanted to bring that into her fashion show.
“I was just so inspired by how creative the girls always have been. Like they were given a challenge of, ‘OK, make this out of a shower curtain,’ and then somebody would walk the runway in a gown made out of a shower curtain,” says Miller. “That type of creativity, even when you’re on a budget, is just so inspiring. And it makes you feel like, dang, if they can do it, I could definitely do it too.”
Besides high-fashion frights, Miller is looking to provide a creative space for a spectrum of young local artists like herself. With an all-student team of models, designers, makeup artists, creative

directors and photographers, the show is giving a boost to many new faces.
Another UCF student involved with this show is designer and model Anne McGrath, who got Miller involved in her first modeling gig after recruiting her for a magazine project. Besides copious amounts of frilly lace, McGrath’s design for the show involves a chic look inspired by the Universal classic Creature From the Black Lagoon.
Although it’s completely volunteer-based, McGrath says the show offers a space for several artists to show off their work for the first time. McGrath posits that a lot of the models are not what be considered “conventional” runway stars.
“Maybe they’re not tall enough, maybe they’re too short, maybe they just don’t fit the bill for what a modeling company might sign or what a modeling company might recruit for a show,” says McGrath. “We tried to recruit those people to get their foot in the door with modeling.”
Indeed, Miller wants her models to be fully themselves on the runway and not feel they have to fix in any sort of outmoded aesthetic box.
“This show allows me to let everybody be themselves,” says Miller. “Someone’s walking down the runway as Frankenstein, but it’s more than just being in a costume. It’s genuinely self-expression.”
Knowing how hard it can be to get a foot in the fashion industry door, Miller says she wanted to counteract closed-minded casting on the runway.
As a Black, alternative, queer creator in the Orlando area, she feels it’s important to give people from marginalized communities a proper shot at the spotlight.
After three months of planning, sourcing and modeling meetings in campus parking garages, the countdown for the show’s premiere is nearly over.
Miller says she’s excited to see the audience’s reactions when the looks are revealed and the hard work of all her amazing designers and makeup artists is on bold and bloody display.
“People normally aren’t that excited for a fashion show unless their friends are personally in it, but even then, they’re excited to see their friends and not the show as a whole. I’ve been getting DMs from people telling me that they’re so excited about this show, and that is exactly what I want,” says Miller.
“That’s exactly the vibe that I want to exude to people, that positivity, that excitement, because they know that they’re about to see some creative people in their element, and that’s exactly what makes all of this worth it.”
So come to Conduit … if you dare.

EDNAH’S GOREY & GLORY FASHION SHOW
As
Tourist attractions turned Orlando into a beacon for variety performers from around the globe, and there’s no bigger big top than Cirque du Soleil’s tent-shaped theater at Walt Disney World. As Drawn to Life approaches its fourth anniversary on Nov. 18, I spoke with original cast member Chloe Diane Polson — who is one of six current performers from the U.K. — about leaving London to create the leading character in this one-of-a-kind circus.
Growing up in Connah’s Quay, a small town outside Liverpool on the border between North Wales and England, Polson’s path to performing was initially inspired by her family’s love of music (especially British soul) and dancing. “None of my family are professional entertainers; however, they’re all very kooky and nutty, and they all love having a good time,” Polson says. “Just being surrounded by artistic people, that was what really sparked me.”
From ages 3 through 16, Polson was immersed in the world of dance, training with the Royal Ballet School associates, before being awarded a scholarship to the Bodywork Company at Cambridge Performing Arts to study musical theater. After graduation, she joined a contemporary dance company called Chrysalis London, then spent several years freelancing. “I was auditioning for the West End, but it was such a struggle, because I’m only 4’ 11”. I’m very tiny and petite, so I was struggling so much to find where I fit in the industry,” Polson recalls. “Those three years were so hard, it was ‘no’ after ‘no’ after ‘no’: ‘You’re too tiny, you’re too petite. You don’t fit into the ensemble, you don’t fit the costume.’”
Ironically, Polson’s small stature helped land her biggest job yet: originating the role of Julie, the tween protagonist of Drawn to Life. Polson was cast in the central part (along with Miho Inaba) after submitting a video audition in May 2019. “They flew me over [from London to
Montreal], and then the audition was literally in one day, which is crazy.”
Initially, Polson says she struggled to adapt her disciplined dance background to the more creative world of Cirque.“My dance skills definitely are needed, but it’s more acting, it’s more physical theater … so it took time for me to really get out of that, to play and have fun. I would definitely say those first few months were like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to really unlearn everything I’ve learned.’”
Unlike most Cirque du Soleil shows, Drawn to Life has a defined storyline, but that doesn’t mean it used a conventional script or rehearsal process. Rather, Polson and Inaba spent three months collaborating with acting coach Nico Lagarde and director Michel Laprise to develop Julie’s journey using a story outline.“A lot of that was just really playing in the body of a little girl. Who is she? How does she walk? How does she speak, how does she play, how does she laugh?” says Polson. “I learned so much, day by day, just
TACOS & VIBES? SAY LESS.
finding who this little inner child was, which was actually a very beautiful process.”
Unfortunately, just as that process ended and Drawn to Life’s premiere approached, the world went into pandemic shutdown, delaying the opening by over a year and a half. “There was no endgame. We didn’t know when it was going to open, [and] I would actually work on the show a lot, to the point where my friends were like, ‘You need to stop it,’” remembers Polson, emphasizing that Cirque supported her and communicated regularly throughout the downtime.
In addition to performing Julie, Polson sometimes substitutes as Abricot Gouache, the Mary Blair-inspired role originated by Russian mime Ekaterina Pirogovskaya. “I definitely had to play with being very, very detailed and intricate. Physically, she’s so different to Julie, who’s free and loose and playful, but this is so precise,” says Polson, who has also trained for a third performance track involving aerial hoops and puppetry. “I love to play and be challenged by the complexities of each character and what they bring to the story.”
Even through her routine isn’t quite as rigorous as some of the death-defying acrobats who must train daily, performing two shows a day can be “quite exhausting,” admits Polson. Despite her busy schedule at Disney Springs, she still makes time to take acting classes at Art’s Sake Studio and sing at Judson’s Live with the Alain Bradette Quartet.
Even after almost four years, Polson has no plans to leave the show, although she hopes to someday see more of America. “I would like to stay in the United States and continue to explore and grow as an artist,” she says. “I take it year by year. It’s hard for me to say, but I’d still love to try other Cirque shows. Broadway would be amazing [and] I’d also love to try film.”
Until then, Polson carries on drinking a cuppa prior to each show “to keep a piece of home with me,” and continues to delight in “seeing the little kids and their eyes when they see Julie, especially when I come for the bow. Sometimes there will be little kids at the front, and they’ll want to touch or high-five. To see their joy through their eyes, that’s the reason why we do it.”

Outpost Neighborhood Tavern adds a bit of queer cheer to the sports bar experience
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Most sports bars — check that; all sports bars I’ve ever visited have been of the certifiably hetero, hyper-masculine, bro-cultured sort. And when a sportsball event of consequence takes place, the vibe typically rises to eruptive levels of testosterone-fueled hooliganery. Of late, however, I’ve been more inclined to parade any unbridled sports passion in the comfort of my home — honestly, it’s just safer for everybody (my wife notwithstanding). So when my sportsball-loving pal and I found ourselves inside the friendly confines of Outpost Neighborhood Tavern, I made sure it was at a prudent lunchtime hour on a weekday afternoon. And while there’s no shortage of boob tubage in this former home of Persimmon Hollow Brewing, we found that the space has been tastefully, and expectedly, queer-eyed. Outpost, you see, is a sports bar, but one amplifying the world of the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, owner Devon Tillman (who formerly ran Island Time in Thornton Park) and OUT Sports League creator John Teixeria bill their tavern on the sink-holed shores of Lake Eola as
a “fabulous place for dining, drinks, drag and sports.” And fabulous it is. The interior refresh allows the bright space to sparkle, while the decor gives as much emphasis to Ronaldo as it does to RuPaul.
“I’ve never been to a gay sports bar,” said the pal.
“Me neither,” I replied. “Let’s drink to being rookies!”
And we did, but Outpost’s bill of fare is less sports bar and more grandma’s country chicken. There are as many Southern flourishes on the menu as Bear Bryant had in his wardrobe. Black-eyed pea hummus ($13), deep-fried collard green chips ($8) and whipped feta topped with a pecan-mint gremolata ($14) are snackables that Alabama and Auburn fans can agree on. But they were also of a caliber that had us excited about trying some of the menu’s heavy hitters.
The appropriately named “Southern comfort burger” ($17), a half-pounder loaded with pimiento cheese, hot honey and chow-chow, was one of the best burgers I’ve had all year. In fact, that tangy chow-chow was so good,

NEWS & EVENTS:
we got it on the corn dogs ($13), smothered in more cheese and an Alabama white barbecue sauce. When Tillman told us the “big mamma” fried chicken ($26) was his great-grandmother’s recipe, it made our decision easy. The pickle juice brine lent a unique flavor angle to the crispy chicken that we appreciated, even if it didn’t suit our tastes. However, the warming spices in the sweet potato cornbread served with the bird did.
I mentioned there were a lot of TVs in the place, and it was likely a match of some sort playing on them that distracted me from reading the description of a dish called “hearty meatloaf” ($24). I expected a plate with slabs of meat slathered in gravy, but what we got were meatloaf meatballs , just as the menu said. No matter; the orbs glazed in a guava barbecue sauce served over coconut-plantain mashed potatoes were as substantial as Jimmy Johnson’s coif. The lone quibble? Baby carrots weren’t cooked all the way through. Not a big deal as we ate the rest with, umm, gay abandon.
Speaking of, a drag brunch ($60-$75) goes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday and it’s proven quite popular. Hardly surprising, given that Outpost serves food and drink fit for a queen. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

John 5’s tour with Richie Kotzen stops in Orlando for the perfect Halloween mix of horror and guitar pyrotechnics
BY EMMY BAILEY
“Iwouldn’t wanna do anything else on Halloween but perform.”
When guitarist John 5 hits the stage in Orlando Halloween night, it won’t just be just another stop on his tour with Richie Kotzen; it’ll be a full-blown monster mash of metal and melody. “I really love being on the road,” John 5 tells Orlando Weekly.“You know, a lot of people aren’t cut out for it, but I just really, really enjoy it. It’s super relaxing.”
This fall’s co-headlining Ghost tour is his latest solo adventure, showcasing songs from his 11th
studio album, Ghost, an entirely instrumental outing that blends horror-inspired aesthetics with virtuosic guitar work.
“I have a guitar that came out a couple of years ago called the Ghost,” John 5 explains. “It’s all white, beautiful and it just fits me perfectly. And it’s attributed to the guitar, but also we all live with ghosts, and we don’t even really know it. It is like we’re surrounded by ghosts, so it just felt like the right title.”
The Ghost record, like much of John 5’s work, moves between genres with eerie ease — from

“My kids live in Florida, so it’s gonna be a wonderful experience. I’m looking forward to that show more than any show on the whole tour,” he says.
His admiration for horror runs deep and seeps into his shows, where visuals and lightning-fast riffs create a creature between a rock concert and a haunted house.
“I love The Shining, Carrie, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist,” John 5 says.“Those really stand the test of time, and that’s what is difficult with horror movies. They’ll always be relevant.”
Despite his macabre inspirations, John 5’s work ethic is as disciplined as it is daring. With Ghost, he recorded the album live in the studio, no studio stitching or endless edits.
“I loved it,” he says.“I don’t have a home studio, so I just love to get things down so you don’t even have to think. And that’s how musicians were like back in the day. Just rehearsing these songs before I go into the studio, and it really helps you be a better musician.”
That same dedication shows up onstage and even in his daily routine.
“I am very health-conscious all the time but especially on the road,” John 5 explains.“I try to go to bed around the same time every night because getting sleep is the most important thing you can do, eat right, and take vitamins. It’s not the rock & roll answer people expect, but it’s true. That’s how I stay ready for 50 shows in a row.”
jazz and rock to blues, country twang and straight-up metal.
“There’s an amalgamation of all these different styles of music,” John 5 says. “We’re incorporating that in the show too, and recording all these concerts. I want to put out a live album called A Live Ghost. We’re going to record a bunch on Halloween, so that’ll be special.”
For John 5, both a solo artist and an in-demand sideman with sundry grisly metal acts, there’s no better time to tour than around Halloween. His lifelong love of classic Universal horror movies, from Frankenstein to The Creature From the Black Lagoon, is woven through music.
“I remember having a little Frankenstein doll when I was five,” John 5 recalls. “I loved all those Universal movies: Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy. That love never goes away. I incorporate that in my show, and it really is a perfect time for me to tour around Halloween because it just fits so perfectly. The fans eat it up. It’s still with me today; nothing really has changed since I was a little kid. ”
The Halloween show in Orlando is personal for the axman, too.
Between Ghost and his time with Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie and Mötley Crüe, John 5’s career continues to evolve without losing its spark.
“It was one of the best touring experiences of my life, and to get to play with the guys and play those great songs, I don’t know if that’ll ever be topped,” John 5 says of his time with the Crüe in particular. “It was just so much fun.”
John 5 started touring in 1994, at the age of 24. Next year, he’ll be embarking on a 50-show, 50-state tour — with no days off — slated to begin in Alaska in October. But, still, his focus remains on evolution.
“I am always trying to improve,” he explains. “A lot of people get comfortable, but I’m always learning and doing research and getting as good as possible.”
For John 5, Halloween night in Orlando is a celebration of everything that’s shaped him: the monsters, the music and the magic of doing what he loves most.
“I’m so lucky and I’m so fortunate to be doing what I am doing. I think that’s the meaning of life — doing what you love — and luckily that’s what I’m doing,” he says.

LOCAL RELEASES
There’s this idea the world has of Orlando as some sort of pixie-dusted utopia. That is, of course, elaborate bullshit. Those of us who live here know this. And those of us in the Orlando music underground know that it can actually be a dark, hard and heavy place. Death metal, black metal, metalcore, sludge, grind, gore — we’ve got it all in spades.
But at some point, all that intensity becomes white noise and the shock becomes schlock. Contrary to what Al Jourgensen said, Halloween cannot, and should not, be every day. And for all our extreme stripes, what we’re surprisingly lean on is good, straightforward heavy rock.
One of the most notable local saviors of this concept is DeLand’s Kaupe, whose sound is like Maserati gone metal. Although their elements are culled from a decidedly progressive palette, their groove is unified and ever-forward like a perpetual motion machine. As a band that cites influences ranging from Meshuggah to Perturbator, the quartet of Brett Walker (guitar), Marc Larabel (drums), Pete Medrano (bass) and Patrick Ross (keys) cover a lot of stylistic ground.
On Destroyer of Worlds, their first new album in four years, Kaupe have taken their same signature template and tricked it out with some new, flashy components. Kaupe have always been a band predicated on dynamics, and their instru-metal locomotive steams onward here as a thundering ride of rock heft, widescreen melodies and soaring synths. This time, though, the previously all-instrumental band have added some noteworthy guest vocalists for the first time. And the payoff is immediate.

vocals of Matt Decker (Tangent, Ginkgo Balboa) join Kaupe’s thrash charge to give the album a hard metal jolt. “RMR-1029” features Scott Angelacos (Junior Bruce, Hollow Leg, Bloodlet), one of the greatest metal voices to ever emerge from Florida, along with sample artist Viewer Discretion (formerly of ACP Pro) to respectably enter Ministry-esque industrial-metal turf.
Destroyer of Worlds is still an undeniably Kaupe album in chassis and horsepower. But the very welcome new detailing adds poignancy and fury to their messages of technological cynicism. The album now streams everywhere and the big release show this weekend features Kaupe alongside a stocked local bill of Hutch, The Dark Arctic and Bunaand (8 p.m. Saturday, Nov.1, Will’s Pub, $15).
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
M.A.C.E., Pressure Kitten, Fawn, DJ Pup Rocky: Just in time to vamp up the spooky
season,“Scaredy Cat” is a Halloween extravaganza merging classic horror themes with very now local talent in music, drag and goods on, appropriately, Devil’s Night. Featured music artists are theatrical industrial act Pressure Kitten, feminist hardcore furies M.A.C.E., new indie rockers Fawn and DJ Pup Rocky. The illustrious drag lineup includes Opulence Black, Sue Cyde, E., Davi Oddity and De Sastre. There’ll also be pop-ups by Orkleth Leather, Atomic Turquoise, Scream Queen Podcast, Little Walks and Colombian food purveyor El Tinto. Come decked out because there’ll be a costume contest with prizes. (7 p.m. Thursday, Oct.30, Will’s Pub, $15-$20)
Nick Dittmeier & the Sawdusters: Nick Dittmeier & the Sawdusters are an Indiana act that’s “alt-country” primarily in the sense that they’re more real country than the pap most people believe is country music nowadays. No goofball rap or pop corn here, just some hard twang, rock thump and touches of 1970s outlaw country. Hallelujah. (9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, Lil Indie’s, no cover)
Sun Room, The Bends: This bill is a tight capture of two good young bands on the up. With taut songs that pack punch, kick and hooks galore, San Diego headliners Sun Room are a raggedly perfect merge of surf and garage that rocks like The Strokes partying with FIDLAR. Baton Rouge indie-rock openers The Bends also bring the grit and concision, only with some Southern heat and drawl like a scrappier Kings of Leon. Together, they’re a strapping double shot of bands who know how to deliver the goods with just the right amount of muss but zero fuss. Acid Mothers Temple
It takes a very, let’s say, committed kind of rock true believer to undertake a tour of the United States in 2025, especially if you are an international musician. But that descriptor pretty much nails psych magus Makoto Kawabata, leader of the eternally freaked and frazzled rock collective Acid Mothers Temple. Kawabata and his Mothers have been following their own wayward path since the 1990s, creating a gorgeously weird combo of Can and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd with just enough free-improv chaos to keep things well and truly weird. The band are on their worldwide Dark Within of Astropia Tour, celebrating their 30 years of interstellar overdrive. A Conversation with Chris DeVille
Going into November strong right after celebrating 41 years of slinging platters, Park Ave CDs hosts a talk with music critic Chris DeVille, managing editor of venerable indie-centric blog Stereogum. DeVille is on tour promoting his new book Such Great Heights: The Complete Cultural History of the Indie Rock Explosion. Which indie-rock explosion, you ask? R.E.M., Sonic Youth and the college rock boomlet of the 1980s? Nirvana’s world domination in the ’90s? No, Such Great Heights instead focuses in on musical territory documented in real time by Stereogum in the early aughts through to the present day, taking in St. Vincent, Phoebe Bridgers, Death Cab for Cutie, LCD Soundsystem,TV on the Radio, Haim and many more. The book also looks at the broader pop-culture contexts of the era, promising “a time machine for millennials.” Moderating this event is, honestly, the only Orlandoan with a matching

Meet the Filmmaker: Ebony & Ivory with Sky Elobar
Enzian presents the Jim Hosking double-header you never knew you needed right before Halloween, pairing cult-fave grindhouse The Greasy Strangler with new postmodern rock pic Ebony & Ivory as one surrealist mini-marathon. A throughline between the two flicks will be there in person in the form of Sky Elobar, star of both films. Elobar first became known to film freaks with his role in the pulpy midnight hit Strangler and plays Paul McCartney in the oddball film Ebony & Ivory, nominally about the making of the just-as-oddball 1982 collab between Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney of the same name. But Ebony is also very much not about that recording, as the film devolves into a delightfully eccentric and surrealist Mighty Boosh-style non-buddy pic. Is this pairing “perfect harmony”? Find out for yourself. As a bonus, Elobar will be aided and abetted by the titular “Greasy Strangler,” Michael St. Michaels. Trick or treat your damn self. 6:30 p.m., Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Meet Parsnip!
Parsnip (A579527) is a senior at approximately 7 years old. He was brought in as a stray back in August. The resident who found him reported him as a little snappy when nervous, and on his first few days, this proved to be true. Parsnip did not like being held, restrained or carried, nor did he enjoy the leash. But he quickly warmed up to staff.
We have carried Parsnip, hugged him, and he has stolen kisses and climbed on to laps. Parsnip weighs 15 pounds and absolutely loves being held and carried.
Parsnip has been here for almost two months. Let’s get this little guy seen. Let’s get him home.
