Roger Chapin secures victory in runoff election for Orlando City Council seat

Looks like the second time’s the charm. After losing a bid for Orlando City Council back in 2002, Chapin declared victory this past Tuesday in a runoff election for City Council District 3, defeating progressive candidate Mira Tanna. With just 200 votes between them, Chapin secured about 51 percent of the vote. The son of former Orange County Mayor Linda Chapin, Roger certainly had name recognition on his side, plus relationships with businesses and industry groups he’s developed over the years through his participation on local municipal boards. Chapin out-fundraised Tanna more than two to one, and secured endorsements from outgoing District 3 commissioner Robert Stuart and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. Tanna, on the other hand — who currently serves as the city’s grants manager — was supported by Orlando mayoral candidate (and current state representative) Anna Eskamani and other progressive politicians including Maxwell Frost, and various labor unions throughout the area. With this win for Chapin, we can expect more of the status quo.

Florida Democratic Party chair Nikki Fried argued ‘pendulum is swinging towards Democrats’

Meanwhile down south, Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried took a victory lap last Wednesday, fresh off seeing Miami voters elect former Miami-Dade County commissioner Eileen Higgins as mayor, the first time a registered Democrat has taken the seat in decades. Higgins defeated former Miami City Manager Emilio González last Tuesday by more than 18 percentage points, 59 percent to 41 percent. That race was technically nonpartisan, but there was no question about party affiliation with such an intense national focus on the contest. González received endorsements from President Trump and Ron DeSantis and campaigned with Rick Scott. Republicans, however, still hold a 1.4 million voter registration advantage in Florida. Fried has said throughout the year that Democrats will need support from independents and disaffected Republicans to win legislative and congressional seats in 2026. Given that disadvantage for Democrats, Fried argued that’s what happened in some parts of Florida last week.

Florida Panhandle prison has ‘culture of abuse and violence,’ report alleges

A nearly two-year investigation into a Panhandle state prison has concluded that overcrowding and understaffing are to blame for a high concentration of complaints by inmates about excessive force and staff misconduct. The report by the Southern Poverty Law Center examines Gulf Correctional Institution near Wewahitchka, which houses approximately 1,600 men. Alleged abuses include stripping inmates in solitary confinement down to their underwear, taking all their property, and leaving them to sleep on a cold steel bunk for up to three days; denying meals for innocuous misconduct and delivering empty food trays to people in solitary confinement; forcing people to stand over the storm drains in the yard for hours, sometimes stripped to their underwear or with their arms and legs in uncomfortable positions; and verbal abuse and harassment, including racial slurs and threats of physical and sexual violence. The SPLC team identified at least 200 incarcerated victims or witnesses and interviewed 95 of them, the report says. They requested and reviewed more than 20,000 pages of prison, health care and Office of Inspector General reports covering at least 1,100 incidents over the past decade. The authors added that the FDC resisted their efforts to gather information. “In response to public records requests, FDC demanded payment of exorbitant fees — often thousands of dollars — before production. After payment, FDC took months to produce records, only then revealing that it had frequently forced the SPLC to pay for duplicates, records that SPLC did not actually request, and unjustified redactions.”

Orlando moves to replace minority business program to comply with Trump administration

Orlando City Council last week moved forward on creating a program intended to prioritize small and local businesses in the city’s contract procurement process, as a Trump-compliant alternative to the city’s former Minority and Women Business Enterprise program. The city’s MWBE program, first established in the early 1980s, served to help businesses owned by minorities and women procure more contracts with the city in an effort to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the procurement process. An executive order released earlier this year by the Trump administration, however, directed government entities to scrap all DEI-related programs and initiatives, describing them as “unlawful,”“corrosive,” and even a violation of civil rights law. The city, fearful of retaliation, subsequently moved forward with suspending its program this past June, at the urging of city attorney Mayanne Downs. Details of the new small business program are still TBD, but Mayor Buddy Dyer said the city has been collaborating on its structure with Orange County, which is similarly pursuing the creation of a small business preferencing program. City staff collectively manage hundreds of contracts, worth more than $1 billion, for construction work, security services, equipment, lobbying and other professional services.

DeSantis presented $117B state budget in Orlando that includes ban on ‘social justice’ efforts

Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled a $117.3 billion state budget proposal last week, his eighth and last, that includes new money for a Make America Healthy Again commission, transfers part of the University of South Florida to New College, and bolsters military installations in hopes of deterring oil drilling off the Florida coast. The proposal, which runs roughly $3 billion higher than the current-year budget, would allocate a record $1.56 billion for teacher salary increases, $14.3 billion for infrastructure and transportation projects, and $1.4 billion for Everglades and water quality projects. DeSantis calls it the “Floridians First” budget. Advocates urge Disney to investigate alleged use of prison labor to make character balloons

D

isney World has long been known for the effort it puts into making every family’s visit to its Orlando parks magical. The multinational entertainment giant sells merchandise at its world-renowned parks to appease eager children and adults alike, and offers various guest services to accommodate the needs of guests with all abilities, plus their service animals.

Disney even recommends specialty character balloons through an online vendor that guests can have personally delivered to their hotel room at a local Disney World Resort hotel.

A jumbo Mickey Mouse-shaped balloon, for instance, will cost you $45 plus a delivery fee.

But what isn’t disclosed, neither by Disney nor its third-party vendor, is the manufacturer who produces those balloons — and how much workers are paid to fold and package them.

Anagram International, a licensed manufacturer of decorative Disney balloons, is based out of Minnesota and is one of the Minnesota Department of Corrections’ largest contractors for prison labor. Its contract with the state’s corrections system — a recent subject of scrutiny by state auditors — allows Anagram to use prison labor at certain correctional facilities to fold, add ribbons to, and package their products. Allegedly, this includes Disney character balloons.

That’s why advocates with the Minnesota Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee and Central Florida Jobs With Justice joined forces outside Disney World last week to voice their concerns.

Dontania “Nina” Petrie, 35, who served three years’ time in Minnesota’s Shakopee Women’s Prison from 2017 to 2020, is all too familiar with the balloon production process. She told Orlando Weekly that, while incarcerated, she was directed to fold 300 to 500 Anagram-branded balloons per hour for an hourly wage of just 50 cents.

“One of the tasks that I did was folding balloons with Disney characters on them,” she recalled at a press conference last week. “I remember that some of them had characters from Frozen and the fork from Toy Story 4 — I remember because my other daughter really loved Frozen, so it stuck with me.”

In 2024, the average wage for workers folding balloons in Minnesota prisons was just 90 cents an hour, according to a recent state audit. That’s more than Petrie herself earned, but still far less than Minnesota’s 2024 minimum wage of $10.85 for large employers — those that report at least $500,000 in annual gross revenue — and $8.85 for smaller employers.

“There’s 50 of us to a room, we’re all folding balloons, and we’re each getting paid 50 cents,” Petrie recalled.“That’s $25 an hour [for everyone in the room] to fold up 300 balloons apiece. And then they’re selling these same balloons, one balloon, for $50.”

A CALL TO ACTION

Incarcerated workers, unlike most other employees, aren’t entitled to minimum wage under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Courts have ruled they do not in fact count as “employees.”

And although slavery and involuntary servitude is barred under the U.S. Constitution, the 13th Amendment contains one exception: “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.”

Petrie, an advocate with the Minnesota Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee, can’t say for sure whether the Disney balloons that prisoners fold behind bars for Anagram are the same balloons that are delivered to guests at Disney World Resort hotels in Orlando.

Balloons produced by Anagram International are also sold at Amazon, Party City and other party supplies sites.

Still, she and other advocates with Central Florida Jobs With Justice, a local coalition of labor and social advocacy groups, are calling on Disney to disclose whether prison labor was used to make the balloons sold at Disney World Resorts.

And, if so, for Disney to disclose the pay rates for the workers who helped make those balloons and to advocate for state legislation in Minnesota

Having too little money upon release, she added, “can make it easier to fall back into criminal activity.”

The Walt Disney Co. did not respond to multiple requests for comment on this story via email.

Nor did Anagram International, a leading foil balloon manufacturer that has a contract with the Minnesota Department of Corrections that is set to last through 2026.

The Walt Disney Co. has a set of international labor standards for its supplier chain that explicitly prohibits forced labor, including paid prison labor.

“In the event forced labor is identified at a facility, Disney may require that Disney-branded production at the facility be suspended until remediation is completed,” a Disney impact report reads.

“People who are serving their time deserve to be treated like human beings,” said Sam Delgado, a community activist and program manager for Central Florida Jobs With Justice.

Advocates with Beyond the Bars, a Miamibased worker center that similarly advocates for workers with criminal records, joined Delgado and the Minnesota IWOC on a public sidewalk just outside Disney World in solidarity with their call to action.

“What our members are fighting for is what every person deserves: a living wage, strong protections, and a clear path to stable, long-term, union employment when they reenter their communities,” said Jandrick Castro, an organizer with Beyond the Bars. “We reject it when their labor is exploited.”

‘IT’S EXPLOITATION, REALLY’

In 2024, Minnesota prisoners who folded Anagram-branded balloons behind bars did so for less than a dollar an hour, even as incarcerated workers tasked with packaging or adding ribbons to balloons, for instance, earned more.

Under rules of a federal program that Minnesota’s correctional system participates in, the Department of Corrections determined that only certain types of work, including tying

that would raise wages for incarcerated workers.

“When I left Shakopee, I left with about $108 that I used to get a little flip phone and a tank of gas,” said Petrie, who’s now studying to become a civil rights attorney.“I believe that when people leave prison, they should be able to get their life back on track.”

Other types of work, such as folding balloons, were exempted from this higher wage, a state audit found, as long as the balloons folded by inmates weren’t actually produced by other incarcerated workers.

“It’s exploitation, really, at the end of the day,” said Petrie.

Members of her organization have advocated in recent years for stronger protections for incarcerated people in Minnesota prisons, including an end to solitary confinement and an end to strip searches, in the wake of sexual assault allegations against prison guards. Petrie is driven by a commitment to racial justice in addition to labor rights, arguing that low pay for incarcerated workers (a disproportionate percentage of whom are people of color) inside creates a “pipeline” for recidivism.

In Florida, prisoners similarly work through multibillion-dollar companies like Aramark — producing billions of dollars’worth in goods and services — for little to no pay.

“I do believe that this is just the prison-industrial complex, so that we are there to actually subsidize these billion-dollar corporations,” Petrie said.

TAKING IT SERIOUSLY

Advocates highlighted the fact that the Walt Disney Co. has delved into allegations of labor violations before. It has sent auditors to factories overseas and has even looked into labor practices at a factory that didn’t have a direct relationship with Disney, but was producing Disney-branded products as the result of “unauthorized subcontracting”by a licensee’s supplier.

As stated in a 2022 impact report, Disney has made efforts to respond to “public concerns” and “allegations” of unsavory labor practices.

This includes allegations of the “underpayment of wages” at a factory in Thailand that produced Disney-branded products without explicit authorization from the entertainment giant.

“We take seriously claims of labor standards violations against independent facilities that manufacture Disney-branded products, and when stakeholders and those we do business with bring such allegations to us, we work to investigate and address these allegations promptly and responsibly,” the impact report states.

Disney World itself employs more than 40,000 parks and hotel workers who are represented by a labor union, and who have certain protections and a path for recourse if they believe their rights have been violated. Third-party service workers at Disney Springs, employed by Disney subcontractor The Patina Group, have been organizing for similar protections on the job and a fair process for forming a union themselves.

Delgado, with Central Florida Jobs With Justice, confirmed that advocates delivered a report to Disney last Tuesday, documenting the Disney balloon-folding situation occurring in Minnesota prisons. They also requested a meeting with corporate Disney representatives in Orlando to discuss.

“Anagram Balloons saves money by having their balloons folded in prisons,” Delgado said.

LOCAL STARBUCKS WORKERS JOIN NATIONAL STRIKE

fter voting overwhelmingly to go on strike if needed to secure a fair union contract, baristas at one of Central Florida’s only unionized Starbucks locations in Oviedo have joined a national strike that began last month, as part of a pressure campaign to get Starbucks to agree to their demands.

Workers at other stores unionized with Starbucks Workers United have gradually joined the strike, leveraging an escalation strategy used by the United Auto Workers union during their “Stand Up” strike against automakers Ford, General Motors and Stellantis in 2023.

“If we get a good contract, that sets a standard that other stores can look at and go, ‘This is better than what the store — this company that says it’s progressive — is offering,’” said Clay Blastic, a local Starbucks barista of more than 10 years.

Blastic, a union leader at his store, told Orlando Weekly that they’re fighting for a union contract with Starbucks that not only lifts up the wages and working conditions of unionized baristas, but sets higher standards for others, too.

Hammock Road location in Oviedo joined the strike last Thursday morning, which has now spread across 180 locations in 34 cities, including two unionized Starbucks locations in West Palm Beach — the first in Florida to join the strike last week — and Clearwater. Baristas at the Oviedo location first voted to unionize in 2022. They were joined on the picket line by allies with labor union UNITE HERE and Central Florida Jobs With Justice.

Unlike one- day strikes organized by Starbucks baristas in the past — a rarity in an industry where so few workers are actually unionized — this strike is an open-ended strike, meaning the end date for their work stoppage is yet to be determined.

“Baristas like me shouldn’t be worrying about making rent or whether we’ll qualify for healthcare coverage, especially in the holiday season,” Zarian Antonio Pouncy, a barista of 12 years from Las Vegas, said in a statement from his union. “We need Starbucks to end the illegal union busting, and we need a fair contract with fair pay, reliable hours, and on-the-job protections. Until then, the message from baristas and our allies across the U.S. and beyond is clear: No Contract, No Coffee!”

Starbucks, despite is progressive branding, has been accused of hundreds of labor law violations since 2021, when baristas in Buffalo, New York, unionized the first corporate-owned location in the United States. Allegations range from Starbucks illegally firing workers for their union activity to cutting the hours of and otherwise retaliating against baristas who are organizing at their store.

Earlier this month, Starbucks also reached a $38 million settlement with New York City’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, according to The City NYC, over Starbucks “arbitrarily” cutting workers’ hours, in violation of the city’s “fair workweek” law. Fair workweek laws, which guarantee predictability in workers’ schedules, were banned by Florida lawmakers through legislation approved by Gov. Ron DeSantis last year.

Blastic, the local barista, said that meeting baristas’ economic demands in a union contract — the primary sticking point in negotiations — would cost Starbucks less than just one average day of sales. Other union leaders have argued the same. “It’s just a question of priorities,” he said.

Starbucks, for instance, found the money to gift its new CEO Brian Niccol, the former head of burrito chain Chipotle, a nearly $100 million compensation package last year. According to an annual report from the AFL-CIO, Niccol made 6,666 times the pay of the average Starbucks barista in 2024.

“They call us ‘partners,’ but I’d like to see them put their money where their mouth is when it comes to that,” Blastic said. While critics might argue that barista jobs are meant to be entry-level jobs for younger workers, Blastic argued, “All jobs deserve dignity.”

“We used to see a lot more older people that were able to make a living with Starbucks, and

that has changed over the years,” he said. The union last year sought a $20 minimum wage in their contract with Starbucks, plus annual 5 percent raises and cost-of-living adjustments.

Starbucks, instead, offered a contract delivering no immediate pay raises — a deal soundly rejected by union baristas earlier this year.

“This is a college store,” Blastic admitted of his location, referring to the fact that they see frequent turnover from students at the University of Central Florida who are looking for a job outside of their studies. Even if this is a student’s first job, he said, “They still deserve the basic dignity of being able to support themselves off the job and respect from their management and protections in the workplace.”

According to Starbucks Workers United, nearly 4,000 unionized Starbucks workers are now on strike, as last week, as part of the union’s latest expansion of the work stoppage. Workers are asking customers and their communities to boycott Starbucks for as long as they’re on strike — meaning no gift cards, no coffee, no holiday merch.

“There are plenty of wonderful local coffee shops in the area, in Oviedo, that would love their business,” said Blastic. “But it’s time for the customers as well to say … ‘if there’s going to be no contract, there’s going to be no coffee.’”

Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson, in response to the strike, told Orlando Weekly in a statement that 99 percent of their 17,000 U.S. locations are still open and welcoming customers, “including many the union publicly stated would strike but never closed or have since reopened.”

In response to the union’s economic demands, Anderson said that pay and benefits for Starbucks jobs average $30 per hour for hourly positions.“Regardless of the union’s plans, we do not anticipate any meaningful disruption,” she said. “When the union is ready to return to the bargaining table, we’re ready to talk.”

Politicians like U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, and U.S. Congressman Maxwell Frost (a former Starbucks barista) have shared support for the striking Starbucks workers — with the former two even joining a picket line with workers up in Brooklyn.

“Right now, Starbucks workers are on strike,” Congressman Frost, a Democrat from Orlando, shared in a Nov. 25 social media reel. “As a former Starbucks barista myself, I’m proud of @sbworkersunited for organizing nationwide.

They need our support and solidarity.”

Starbucks workers in Oviedo have also set up a strike fund through GoFundMe, to help cover workers’ lost income while they’re on strike.

Drag Queen Christmas host Nina West talks about returning to Florida in festive and defiant fashion, DeSantis be damned

ike a particularly shitty Grinch (without the heart-growth potential, howsoever), Gov. Ron DeSantis and his cronies have been oddly obsessed with depriving Floridians of the festive fun of the all-star holiday revue A Drag Queen Christmas.

Earlier this fall, Florida attorney general James Uthmeier urged Pensacola city leaders to cancel a December stop of the Drag Queen Christmas tour.

That earned him both the cold shoulder from the City Council and a clapback from Drag Race alum Trinity the Tuck, who told“Mr. Urethra”that“drag is fun, drag is art, and it’s not hurting anybody.”

And who could forget how in the year of our lord 2022, DeSantis ginned up controversy over supposed explicit performances during the Drag Queen Christmas show at the Plaza Live? DeSantis threatened to yank the liquor license of the Plaza and even sent undercover agents to surveil the

show (who found nothing explicit). All over what?

Some holiday-themed glamour, dancing, seasonal jokes and maybe a tear-jerking story or two? Face it, this is remarkably wholesome entertainment.

Now here we are a few days before the Drag Queen Christmas ensemble returns to Orlando after a few years’ absence, and longtime show hostess Nina West — a Drag Race alum, singer and activist — is looking back with Orlando Weekly.

“That 2022 show, the state of Florida was really rough that year. It was really, really hard on that tour. We had protesters at every single stop. Every single stop. And when we got to Florida, which was towards the end of our run, the governor was really doing his best to try to create this fake outrage,” remembers West. “It’s never just about pulling up a few bricks on a rainbow crosswalk. It’s not about taking a venue’s liquor license away. It’s not just about a drag show. … It’s about attacking us — and

our trans siblings, more specifically. Drag seems to be the big bad, the easy mark for people to have the entry point with which to do that. But it’s part of the indomitable queer spirit that we will not go away and we will persevere.”

West is also, legitimately, thrilled about being back on the road to celebrate the season. Here’s a little secret for you on the nice side of the ledger: West is a “huge fan” of the Christmas season, and of the rich mine of inspiration that love provides for her drag.

“I love the nostalgia of it all. I love the decorations,” says West. “What makes it so rich for drag is that there is so much to pull from, whether it’s in pop culture or tradition or even just the decorations, so over-the-top and really gaudy and larger than life.”

And naughty NDAs or not, West even spills a little bit of cinnamon-spiced tea about her looks this year as she remembers her own drag ghosts of Christmas past. “I’m doing Buddy the Elf this year. I have done Christmas Vacation send-ups.

I’ve done Rosemary Clooney and reworkings and reimaginings of Christmas songs. I’ve done the Muppets Christmas Carol,” says West.

This year’s Christmas cast features Lexi, Bosco, Shea Coulee, Jewels Sparkles, Crystal Methyd, Suzie Toot, Brooke Lynn Hytes and Lydia B. Kollins — a great mix of young and established performers, with West hosting the evening, as she’s done for years. She’s excited about getting in the mix.

“We’ve got so many incredible cast members,” she says. “Jewels and Suzie are both from Florida, so it’s exciting for us to come to Florida and have two natives be a part of our tour, and to celebrate their success over the last year with people in their hometowns.”

Like any good Christmas special, album or revue, planning and work begins for cast members like West as early as the summer.

Besides the intense preparation — West starts planning her looks in June and carries a notebook with her with ideas and “throughlines” for banter in each city — it’s endearing how seriously West takes making A Drag Queen Christmas a tradition for LGBTQ+ folk and allies to gather and create connections and memories as a chosen family.

“Being on the road allows me to interact with people who may not have the opportunity to have celebrations in the way that they want to, or maybe this is the way that they choose to celebrate. Which is fabulous because I get to help lead that as the host of the show and welcome people into this new tradition,” says West.

As we talk about joy, our conversation shifts to the increasingly loud and, yes, joyous defiance we’ve witnessed onstage at drag shows large and small over the past year. It’s something even a seasoned pro like West has noted.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time. So you know, you go through periods where you think, ‘Oh, everything’s great.’ Then you kind of take it all for granted, that you can go do a drag brunch or you can go to a library and do a story hour.

And now those things are all very much under question,” agrees West. “And I’m watching my fellow artists and entertainers proudly grab hold of the wig — or the reins — and drive the story to ensure that they and their community members are safe and are protected and spoken up for and advocated for.”

And while Nina West wants you to dress up, pregame with an eggnog or two and maybe “treat yourself to a pair of silly holiday earrings”to usher in the holiday season with the queens, she also wants you to remember that there’s a deeper connection at work amidst the Christmas razzle-dazzle.

“I see this as an opportunity to remind everyone in Florida that, ‘Hey, we aren’t going anywhere, and we will continue to come through and tour,’” she says. “I think our job is to serve as a reminder that [drag] is a very powerful and purposeful art form that really is about joy. It’s centered around joy, and it’s a great reminder during a holiday season also about joy. Those two things are intrinsically linked, our queer joy is vital and our deserving of our own happiness is vital, especially during this time of year.” arts@orlandoweekly.com

A few highlights from the theme parks’ holiday celebrations, as well as a few lumps of coal to avoid Central Florida’s tourism industry

enjoyed several bountiful months between the opening of Epic Universe and the end of Halloween, but attraction wait times dipped below their pre- and post-pandemic peaks during this past Thanksgiving. Locals historically hide from the locust-like swarms of visitors during late December, but if current trends continue, 2025 might be your best opportunity in years to experience the major resorts’ Christmastime charms without crushing crowds. If you are dashing to the theme parks, these are a few of my favorite highlights from their holiday celebrations, along with a few lumps of coal to avoid.

Magic Kingdom has been ground zero for Walt Disney World’s holiday celebrations for over 50 years, and the pull of nostalgia is so strong that tickets to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas after-hours parties continue to sell out, despite increasing in cost and capacity every year. Fortunately, you don’t need a party ticket

to enjoy the Jingle Cruise, the Santa-satirizing overlay of Adventureland’s classic boat ride. But with construction walls barricading nearly half the park from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (reopening Spring 2026) through the Rivers of America (demolished for Cars and Villains lands, opening TBA), you might be better off making holiday memories in another park.

In its place, Disney’s Hollywood Studios has stepped in with celebrations aimed at slightly more mature merrymakers, featuring vintage mid-century decorations and an after-hours party that offers alcohol. I’m frankly amazed that tickets are still available (as of this writing) for the Jollywood Nights events on Dec. 17 and 20, since it’s the only place you can meet Chewbacca in his red Life Day robes from the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. Party night or not, stop

by Sunset Boulevard after sunset for the projection mapping show featuring the Muppets; they’re also taking over the nearby Rock & Roller Coaster next year, and have already evicted Aerosmith from the ride’s preshow.

At EPCOT, the International Festival of the Holidays once again decks the walkways around World Showcase with tempting food booths and sets Living With the Land’s Glimmering

Greenhouses aglow. My favorite annual tradition is to catch a celebrity (Deadpool’s Leslie Uggams, this year) narrating the always-spectacular Candlelight Processional, then slurp some soba noodles in the neighboring Japan pavilion while watching local actress Karin Amano, who has been performing as the Daruma storyteller for over a quarter-century. Just don’t continue around to France’s Ratatouille ride if you’re a 3-D fan like myself; the recent removal of glasses has exposed the screens’ edges and distortions to an unfortunate degree.

For a less stressful Disney experience this Christmas, I suggest Animal Kingdom, which sees the smallest attendance of WDW’s four parks. From the folk art-influenced ornaments on the tree outside the entrance to the enchanting Merry Menagerie of animal puppets that appears around Discovery Island, the seasonal celebrations here are refreshingly subtle. Cooler weather means you’re more likely to see lions lying along the Kilimanjaro Safaris route during midday, and you can also get your last looks at what’s left of Dinoland U.S.A. before it goes extinct in early February. Disappointingly, the new Zootopia: Better Together 4-D film — which recently replaced It’s Tough to Be a Bug — ended

up being a big empty box beneath the tree, filled with unimpressive visuals, unintelligible dialogue and unreliable animatronics.

Up the road at Universal Orlando, the Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s continues to be the most impressive processional in Universal Studios Florida’s arsenal (sorry, Mardi Gras and Mega Movie), while returning seasonal versions of the Blues Brothers and Celestina Warbeck shows are just the icing on the fruitcake. Obsessive passholders will want to take their time examining all the Holiday Tribute Store’s Easter eggs referencing Earl the Squirrel (a cult character who greets guests on Hollywood Boulevard), as well as the New York construction wall posters teasing potential replacements for Rip Ride Rockit.

Islands of Adventure has reignited their Christmas light show on Hogwarts Castle, after dimming the Wizarding World’s Dark Arts projections during Halloween. More importantly, the popular Grinchmas celebration is back, with its beloved musical stage show and a brand-new Seussian tree farm where Who-wop singers periodically perform. Beware: Wait times to meet the extremely interactive Grinch often exceed any other attraction in Orlando, so you may want to spring for a breakfast package or VIP holiday tour.

For its first festive season, Epic Universe applied Christmas decor to Celestial Park and the Ministry of Magic, while the Isle of Berk observes Snoggletog with mac & cheese cones. But the new park’s best holiday present was a recent permit filing pointing to the construction of a massive 150,000-square-foot expansion in its near future.

Finally, SeaWorld Orlando’s Christmas Celebration once again provides an alternative to its larger competitors’ holiday offerings, with a broad selection of seasonal snacks available through tasting packages, traditional ice-skating and live Nativity shows. You can skip Mrs. Claus’ Magic Kitchen unless you have young kids in tow, but the freshly reborn Clyde & Seamore’s Countdown to Christmas show is an absolute must-see. Thanks to the comedic collaboration between SeaWorld’s sea lion trainers and Odd-o-Ts’ Entertainment, this was the most entertaining example of anthropomorphic “yes, and” I’ve unwrapped in ages. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

hen modern German restaurant Schmankerl Stub’n closed for good after being open less than a year, chef-owner Daniel Gabor vowed to return “anywhere but downtown Orlando” and in a “better established area for restaurants, foot traffic and parking.” That place? Ocoee.

It’s not exactly known for its walkability score, but it’s certainly a departure from downtown’s party atmosphere and occasional gunfire. Which is somewhat ironic, given Gabor’s redo is modeled after an Alpine hunting lodge, or jagdschloss, presumably one in the German Alps. What struck me was the spartan decor. I mean, if you’re billing your restaurant as an Alpine hunting lodge, go full Alpine hunting lodge. Apart from the handful of antlers on a bare green wall and the vintage spider chandeliers hanging from the drop ceiling, the main dining room — once home to Bella Tuscany and RusTeak — seems very much a work in progress.

The menu, on the other hand, is a finished product. Gabor, a native of Upper Bavaria schooled at the Culinary Institute of America, serves what he calls “fresh takes on the Alpine region’s comfort food.” Many are grounded in the German dishes people loved at Schmankerl, but there’s a dry-ager near the entrance

containing steaks and duck. Long day of hunting and pecking at the keyboard? Why, dig into a 12-ounce, three-week-dry-aged ribeye ($75) with a side of beef-fat chimichurri. Or perhaps a charcuterie board ($18) with luscious cuts of spice-cured, dry-aged duck prosciutto, rounds of chorizo, air-dried lonzo and paper-thin filetto.

Gabor does it all in his scratch kitchen, right down to the addictive horseradish dip served with that board.

Alpine comfort, however, comes in other forms — in the Gruyère fondue for two ($36), served with potato sourdough made with trimmings from hash browns (a brunch item) and potato peels, and in the onion soup ($10) flavored with Irish whiskey and cognac and cheesed with Gruyère and cheddar. The paper napkins set inside a stein with cutlery at our table were no match for the dribble on my chin, yet I noticed cloth napkins sitting on empty tables with no mouths to wipe. Our server obliged when I asked for a sturdier serviette, but I thought it odd that every table didn’t have them.

Another thing every table should have, in addition to a refreshing Bitburger Pils or a crafted cocktail from the bar, is an earnestly presented plate of smoked and spiced Gruyère sausage ($20), which Gabor makes in house.

The snap of the porky tube is matched only by the crackle of a potato pancake and pop of sauerkraut. It’s the kind of dish a strapping Teuton would eat after chasing down a sure-footed chamois on a rocky slope. Not as substantial, yet equally gratifying, is the wiener schnitzel ($31) served with a side of butter spätzle. Of note is the expert soufflieren — that puff in the crust that separates a proper schnitzel from a subpar shit-zel. Gabor dredges the veal cutlets in flour, egg, cream and breadcrumbs before its swirl in hot shortening.

There ought to be a German term for the intense enjoyment one gets from eating Black Forest cake ($12) — gaumenfreude, suggests Google — because that’s precisely what I felt after gorging on the chocolatey slab wondrously executed by pastry chef Samantha Bosen. If there’s a better BFC being served in the city, do let me know. A warm apple strudel ($10), crisped on top and set in a pool of crème anglaise, also made a worthy ender. Our only knock was that heavy saucing — it made the bottom of the strudel soggy. No biggie.

Besides, here at Daniel Gabor’s Alpine Bar & Grill, I wasn’t going to make a mountain out of a molehill.

After leaving Park Lights Hospitality in June, two-time James Beard-nominated chef Brandon McGlamery will open The Reverie, an American brasserie, next fall in Hannibal Square.

The restaurant will take over both Chez Vincent and Hannibal’s Lounge spaces … Ocean Buffet, from the same ownership group as Natsu Omakase in the North Quarter, has opened at 3019 E. Colonial Drive near the Fashion Square Mall. The almost 15,000-square-foot restaurant offers everything from dim sum and grilled dishes to hibachi items and sashimi. The AYCE affair goes for $17.99 during lunch and $28.99 during dinner … Haraz Coffee House, the Michigan-based Yemeni café pouring creative Eastern- and Western-style coffee beverages using beans picked from the mountainous region of Jabal Haraz, has opened in the building next to Pig Floyd’s at 1561 Lee Road in Winter Park … Korean pastry house Tous Les Jours has rebranded to N’Grano Cafe & Bakery at 1230 W. Fairbanks Ave. in Winter Park. Before the Tous Les Jours rebrand, it was Bread & Co. …

After Amazon Fresh pulled out of the Trelago Market in Maitland, word comes that Trader Joe’s will open a 12,500-square-foot store in the shopping plaza. No opening date has been announced … Guntur Kitchen, specializing in South Indian dosas, uthappams and biryanis, has opened at the Wildmere Plaza in Longwood at 525 S. Ronald Reagan Blvd. … Over in Lake Mary, Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream has opened its seventh scoop shop in the Lake Mary Village plaza at 3801 W. We’ll also find out what caused the great conflagration in the first place, although my money is on either Las Vegas or Justin Theroux. (Prime Video) Murder in Monaco — For years, it’s been believed that the penthouse fire that claimed the life of billionaire banker Edmond Safra was set by a male nurse with a very specific set of grievances. This documentary isn’t so sure, poring over the available evidence to examine equally valid possibilities. Just checking: Netflix doesn’t own Beavis, right? (Netflix) What’s in the Box? — Neil Patrick Harris hosts a game show that has contestants answering trivia questions to win the contents of some mysterious prize packages. They really dropped the ball by not having Kevin Spacey host this one, because it would be nice to be able to go back to talking about Gwyneth

Emily in Paris — Our heroine seeks professional and romantic fulfillment in Rome in Season 5, although show creator Darren Star promises that doesn’t mean the series will be abandoning the French focus of its title. I mean, it’s not like being intercontinental is an entirely new concept to the audience, given how many of them have their primary residence in Titusville but summer in Starke. (Netflix)

Born to Be Wild — Hugh Bonneville narrates a nature series that profiles six endangered animals that were born in civilization but are destined to return to their untamed roots.

(Netflix) Jake vs. Joshua: Judgment Day — Jake Paul’s planned November bout against Gervonta Davis was called off when the latter was hit with some nasty domestic assault allegations, but Paul is bouncing back by going up against two-time world heavyweight champ and British Olympian Anthony Joshua. Joshua appears to have a clean record regarding his romantic affairs, although he’s been busted for weed and dogged by claims he subscribes to a philosophy of Black supremacy. Then again, I’m sure he has his bad points as well.

Elway — Legendary quarterback John Elway looks back on his life both on and off the field in a documentary that’s already earned high marks from former teammate Karl Mecklenburg. “His single-minded focus on winning the Super Bowl is what stood out to me and really separated John from most players, including me,” Mecklenburg admitted.

Pink Martini singer Storm Large brings her Holiday Ordeal to Orlando in the nick of time

think, honestly, very few people are truly bigots. I think most people are just really ignorant. There are some true bigots, and fuck them. They have no Christmas, Santa’s watching them, and they’re fucked. But in general, most people, I think, who have their bigoted ideas that they stay contracted around, especially older generations, it’s because it makes them feel safe.”

Getting into the holiday spirit is easy for some.

For others, it’s something more of an ordeal. When

it comes to the season, many can attest to messy family dynamics, racist uncles and homophobic jokes at the dinner table. But instead of encouraging fans to ignore these seasonal downsides in search of fabricated joy, Storm Large, lead singer of internationally loved loungers Pink Martini, is throwing it all on the table. Back for yet another year is Large’s solo show “Holiday Ordeal,” where punk meets Christmas, at Judson’s Live.

become. And in our current culture, with so much pressure placed on everyone to be perfect and “morally pure,” she says it’s not about being politically correct, it’s about “not being a dick.”

As we’re all fallible and inevitably “careening down this timeline together,” she figures, why not lighten up and have some fun?

“I take my job very seriously, but I don’t take myself very seriously, and that’s probably why I’ve managed to do this job for so long. But I’m just kind of a cut-up. I’ve been a cut-up forever, and I love Christmas. I love the holidays. I wasn’t raised religious or anything, but there’s just a sense of magic in the whole … Solstice and Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah. There’s just sort of like the end of the year, the beginning of the year, the darkest night ever, you know. So I just kind of liked to celebrate with humans in real life, which nowadays seems like a radical act of optimism, but in a live music setting.

Make people laugh, make people feel good, sing Christmassy songs, but also sing songs that are evocative of just sort of the holiday spirit, of giving, of rebelliousness, of silliness, of love, of togetherness, hope, all that corny shit.”

Helping the crowd find ways to be jolly often involves a broad gesture to everything that’s transpired throughout the year, with Large first greeting the audience, “Holy shit, you guys.”

Growing up as the black sheep of her family, Large is all too familiar with complex family dynamics. She says she gets plenty of eye-rolls when she wonders,“Can’t humans just human?”

But she’s firm in her belief that you can’t change the way someone sees something, in the same way that they can’t change the way you see it.

Although she doesn’t get explicitly political during her shows, Large says that she doesn’t have to. Describing herself as one of a different tribe, she believes her fans understand that she has love for all people. It’s because of this that her show also doubles as a safe space for all the other outcasts and weirdos during the holiday season.

“I think as a performer, people trust me. They know that I am a loving person and that we all feel differently, we all pray differently, we all love differently. We come from very different places.

And there are people who are trying to make all of that difference into a negative column. But you can’t fight the positive column of our melange of difference. It is our superpower,”she says.“And in a Christmas Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, rock & roll, punk rock, silly, dorky show sung by a giant, slutty-looking rock & roll person, you know it’s a safe place to be. People want to feel seen. They want to belong somewhere. And I was so lonely as a child that I’m like, ‘I’ll never let anyone feel like that.’ And you can feel that in the show, and everybody can feel that in the show.”

Throughout an incredibly diverse career, which has taken her from culinary school to America’s Got Talent, Large says that music has become a way to help people in a larger sense.

She says that she nearly quit music in the wake of 9/11, feeling that she needed to “do something a little more important than just make noise with my face and tell my silly jokes.”

But when Large eventually started playing music again, she realized that she was able to make more of an impact socially and emotionally with her singing.

“As a musician and as a personality, I’m given the opportunity to travel so much and meet so many people, I can make an actual hands-on impact to more people,”Large says,“because music is sneaky. Music gets into you, and it really can fuck with the controls and change your polarity. It can really alter things in a positive way.”

So if you’re in dire need of some cheeky holiday cheer, with notes of nostalgia and a perhaps little mischief, the final night of Storm Large’s two-night Holiday Ordeal at Judson’s Live Wednesday promises the perfect mix of heart and holiday magic. music@orlandoweekly.com

Almost more than any other genre, being a punk band is a declaration, a commitment.

But the very thing that makes it respectable is the same thing that can make it a straitjacket.

Orlando’s Porch Coffin, however, have chosen not to be bound by it.

Porch Coffin are a punk band. Their first two EPs — 2022’s Porch Coffin and 2023’s Oblivion — were solidly punk rock, the kind that could easily rock any crowd at Fest. But on their new Dogs Bite EP, they’re proving that they’re more than that.

Porch Coffin’s music has always had the kind of melodicism that lends itself to a wide horizon.

But Dogs Bite is their most reaching release yet, and it’s a gambit that yields some very noteworthy results. While there’s plenty of sonic substance here, the band exchange punk charge for emotional heft.

Like indie rock made by punks, these new songs run deeper with heavier rock currents into emotive post-hardcore waters. In fact, their palette’s now open enough to tap good 1990s alt-rock veins.

The title track could’ve been Elastica had they grown up in Seattle, and “Pocketknife” sounds like a lost grunge-era hit. Meanwhile, “Family Portrait”and the excellent “Jody Lee”are painted in long strokes of mood, melody and muscle.

But all this talk of genre minutiae is secondary. The cardinal point is that this is a good record. It’s proof positive of a band that cares more about songs than stripes. Even without any of their previous punk jolt, Dogs Bite is

Tinnitus Rex: As a heavy improv band, Orlando’s Tinnitus Rex traffic in surprise. But this show’s different even for them. For one, it’ll feature their first composed work. Moreover, the performance will be a special live scoring of Un Chien Andalou, the seminal 1929 short film by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali widely revered as a touchstone of surrealist cinema. So, between

the film screening and Tinnitus Rex playing live, expect an evening of sliced eyeballs, severed hands and outer-limits rock. Good, wholesome fun for all you deviants. This innovative multimedia event is part of La CinOMAthèque, the art film series by Orlando Museum of Art and the Enzian. (6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, Orlando Museum of Art, free) Telekinetic Yeti, Thunderchief, The Dark Arctic: Few rock bands in the land pack the twin barrels of power and efficiency like Iowa’s Telekinetic Yeti. Through some sort of sonic wizardry, they manage to conjure maximalist stoner doom metal with the slash and agility of a two-piece band. I was at their 2018 Florida debut at Will’s Pub and I still bear the burns from their heat. They’re a live marvel that’ll leave you stupefied and converted. Opening will be nasty Virginia sludge dealers Thunderchief and Orlando psych-prog band The Dark Arctic.

But don’t forget that there’s still much need out there, and this show is spreading the holiday spirit where it’ll help the most. Organized by One Good Thing, the Orlando group that mobilizes the arts community to help the community at large, the “Bands Saving the World” showcase is a roundup of local acts powering a food drive. Matt Rogers

Internet personality, one half of the “Las Culturistas” podcast and the prince of pop culture himself Matt Rogers heads to the City Beautiful to deliver a heaping helping of holiday laughs.

In what Rogers called the “dumbest, gayest Christmas spectacle you can imagine,” his annual holiday tour Christmas in December blends comedic sketches, satire and plenty of campy live music. We’ll likely hear tunes from his own 2022 musical special, Have You Heard of Christmas?, get first listens of new songs and witness some Mariah Carey high-note levels of Christmas cheer.

The project started in 2017, Rogers told Billboard, in a 70-seat cabaret theater in New York City.
