» Tom Keen heads to City Council, Shan Rose keeps seat, and District 3 candidates head to runoff
Last Tuesday was election day, and although Orlando didn’t have some of the more high-profile races that had national political commentators’ heads spinning, we still had three City Council seats (all officially nonpartisan) up for grabs. Former state Rep. Tom Keen, for instance, beat out incumbent city commissioner Jim Gray (the last Republican on Orlando City Council) for his District 1 seat, while interim commissioner Shan Rose managed to keep her position representing District 5. Former District 5 city commissioner Regina Hill — who was suspended from her position last year and is currently facing multiple felony charges — had challenged Rose for her former seat. Hill has also reportedly not conceded in the race, as of publication, despite Rose getting nearly 52 percent of the vote to Hill’s 33 percent. Meanwhile, in District 3, voters will be asked to head back to the ballot box next month for a runoff election, since none of the five candidates running for the seat earned more than 50 percent of the vote. Candidates Roger Chapin and Mira Tanna advanced in that race and will both be on the ballot for a runoff election scheduled for District 3 voters on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
» Frito-Lay cuts 500 jobs in Orlando due to plant closures
Frito-Lay closed its decades-old plant just west of College Park last week, cutting more than 450 jobs at that facility alone. According to a required notice filed with the state Department Commerce, the company will also be cutting 46 jobs at a separate warehouse just down the street next May on Park Oaks Avenue, resulting in roughly 500 local jobs eliminated total. A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letter dated Nov. 4 notes that the facility near College Park at 2800 Silver Star Road shuttered last Tuesday, immediately terminating the employment of 454 blue-collar employees, including dozens of laborers, packaging machine operators and maintenance workers involved in manufacturing operations. Frito-Lay, a $13 billion snack food subsidiary of Pepsi, also sold other properties along John Young Parkway earlier this year, the Orlando Business Journal reported. Orlando’s Frito-Lay plant first began production in 1965, more than half a century ago, before even the construction of the world-renowned theme parks that Orlando is most famous for today.
» Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings kicks off campaign for governor Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings last Thursday formally announced his bid for governor, setting up a Democratic primary fight next year against former U.S. Rep. David Jolly. Demings, a former Orlando police chief and former Orange County sheriff, issued a statement that focused on the need to make Florida more affordable. “Florida needs a change. We need a different type of governor who puts delivering results before grabbing headlines and petty political fights,” he said. Demings has served as mayor of Orange County since 2018. With Gov. Ron DeSantis unable to run in 2026 because of term limits, U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds and former state House Speaker Paul Renner are seeking the Republican nomination for governor. Jolly, a former Republican who left the party in 2018, kicked off his campaign in June. Jolly welcomed Demings to the race, arguing Democrats deserve a “spirited” primary. Whoever emerges from the Democratic primary is expected to be the underdog in the general election, as Republicans have huge advantages in both fundraising and voter registration. The last Democrat to win a Florida gubernatorial race was Lawton Chiles, who was re-elected in 1994. The Republican Party of Florida greeted Demings’ entry into the contest with a news release saying his campaign is “destined to flop.”
» Florida AG sues Planned Parenthood over ‘false’ abortion safety claim
Attorney General James Uthmeier last week filed a lawsuit accusing Planned Parenthood of falsely advertising that abortion medication is “safer than Tylenol.” The lawsuit, filed in Santa Rosa County circuit court, targets claims by Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc. and its affiliates in Florida. The 37-page lawsuit focuses in part on statements about the safety of mifepristone and misoprostol, which are used to induce chemical abortions. As an example, Planned Parenthood’s website says that medication abortion is very safe. “In fact, it’s safer than many other medicines like penicillin, Tylenol, and Viagra. Serious problems are rare, but like all medicines, there can be risks,” the website says. The lawsuit alleges that Planned Parenthood’s safety claim is “manifestly false” and “badly misleads the women who seek information about the safety and risks of chemical abortion.”
Uthmeier’s lawsuit asks a judge to find that Planned Parenthood’s “campaign to induce women to purchase abortion drugs by misrepresenting the risks of chemical abortion” violates state law prohibiting deceptive and unfair trade practices and constitutes a pattern of racketeering activity. Planned Parenthood of Florida President and CEO Alexandra Mandado called Uthmeier’s lawsuit a “politically motivated attack” and defended the medication.
» State DOGE report finds UCF is Florida’s most efficient university
The task force charged with assessing State University System efficiencies released a 26-page report that found the University of Central Florida, the Orlando-based school with the largest enrollment, had the lowest cost to produce a degree from start to finish at $46,548. The New College of Florida in Sarasota, meanwhile, had the highest at $494,715. New College has the fewest students in the state university system. Presented to the Board of Governors, the report said the cost of university operating expenses per degree is the “key metric for measuring overall institutional efficiency.” The report also tracks the universities’ success in getting students into jobs. For purposes of the report, job placement is defined as those who, within a year of graduating with a bachelor’s degree, earn more than $40,000 annually or are in graduate school. It found that New College of Florida has the lowest placement rate at 65 percent, followed by Florida A&M University with 70 percent. Conversely, Florida Polytechnic University ranks highest in the report for job placement with 81 percent, followed by University of West Florida with 80 percent and University of Florida with 79 percent.
HOPE AND HELP
Where in Orlando to find food banks or donate amid SNAP cuts
BY CHLOE GREENBERG
Nearly 3 million Floridians lost access to federal food assistance Saturday, Nov. 1, as the ongoing government shutdown has resulted in the temporary cessation of SNAP funding.
Florida has the fourth largest SNAP enrollment in the country, with 2.94 million relying on the program for food security — that includes veterans, the elderly and more than 1 million children. Nationwide, 41.7 million people rely on SNAP benefits, August 2025 data show.
In and around Orlando, a number of food banks, pantries, nonprofits and other organizations are continuing to provide food and resources to those in need while SNAP benefits are suspended. What follows is a developing list of Orlando-area food banks and pantries working to support their fellow community members.
Several of the following are accepting (and in need of) food donations and/or volunteers. Check individual websites or contact the location to find more information on which goods are needed most. Orlando organizations accepting donations also include United Against Poverty and Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

HAVE YOURSELF A (S)CRUDDY LITTLE CHRISTMAS
The very outspoken Deloris Scrud returns to tell all and maybe even save the holidays
BY MATTHEW MOYER
It’s been awhile since we’ve seen local playwright, actor and theatrical impresario Michael Wanzie on an Orlando stage. And it’s been even longer since we’ve seen his singular creation Deloris Scrud in the dramatic flesh. Orlando has either been incredibly naughty or nice, because both Wanzie and Scrud are back to ring in the holiday season this year.
Scrud — a maximum-sass Phillips 76 truckstop waitress in the mold of Alice’s Flo with a dash of Wanzie’s own characters in Ladies of Eola Heights, but less hifalutin and with a fiercely progressive sensibility — hasn’t been seen nor heard of since a raucous holiday run of A Trailer Trash Christmas at the Parliament House’s Footlight Theatre in 2004. But in December she holds
court at Savoy with a new cabaret show and a surprising, though unseen, co-star. (More on that in a moment.)
Beyond the satisfyingly full-circle nature of bringing Scrud back for the same holiday season where we left her, Christmas time has long been a perversely perfect framing device for adventurous theater and subversive commentary. Think: the Christmas tours of John Waters; Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme; Orlando’s Phantasmagoria; all the way down through the underlying anti-capitalist message of A Christmas Carol. It’s not all fuddy-duddies in sweaters singing about it being cold outside.
“I know it sounds clichéd, but I think it has to do with the spirit of the season,” agrees Wanzie. “One of the motivating factors is how defeated and forlorn and just upset that people, especially people in the gay community, are feeling right now with everything that’s being heaped upon us by the Trump and the DeSantis administrations. It’s a very politically charged thing, it is very anti-Trump and very anti-DeSantis, but it ends in a message of hope, and I’m hoping that it’ll give people permission to laugh despite what’s going on, while at the same time hopefully having them leave the theater feeling better than when they came in.”
This is also a very personal performance for Wanzie, his first time on a stage in his home city for three years, most of which were spent overcoming some serious health challenges.
“I was in a near-fatal car accident, with a very long, painful recovery process and physical therapy that stretched on for over a year and a half. I had to literally learn to walk again,” says Wanzie. “But I wanted to put something together quickly for Christmas, and I just thought of that character and how much fun she was to do and how much the public seemed to enjoy her.”
Wanzie isn’t coming alone — to mash up Dolly Parton and an ancient proverb, it takes a village to look this cheap. So Wanzie will be aided and abetted by local drag performer Gidget Galore with hair and makeup, longtime directing partner Kenny Howard, composer and sound designer Rich Charron, and costumer Douglas White. Not to mention hidden co-star and man-behind-the-curtain playing himself: the Orlando Sentinel’s Scott Maxwell. How did this festive alliance come about?
“Surprisingly enough, it was not difficult! Just about everyone I knew said, ‘Oh, he’ll never do that. The paper’s never gonna let him do that.’
But I am a huge fan of Scott and we’ve gotten to know each other and become very friendly over the years,” says Wanzie. “So it seemed like he would be the perfect choice for interviewing Deloris. I wrote and asked him, and he immediately said, ‘I’d be honored to do it.’”
The scoop that intrepid reporter Maxwell is after is an exclusive interview with Scrud after the release of her tell-all book How Serving Up Biscuits & Gravy Helped Me to Overcome a Lifetime of Racism & Bigotry. Like any good Southern belle, Scrud is posted up in front of her trailer, phone on speaker (and then some), drinking and smoking and putting on a li’l holiday show for

the neighbors (that is, the audience).
“The interview is happening while Deloris is sitting in her lawn chair out in front of her trailer, and she’s invited all of her neighbors to bring their beer coolers and lawn chairs over and sit and listen in on the telephone interview, which she’s hooked up to the trailer-park loudspeaker system via Bluetooth,” explains Wanzie. “While the interview is going on, she’s working on her craft projects that she’s getting ready to sell at a holiday pop-up fair with all the money going to the Trans Peer network [a very non-fictional group that meets at The Center]. So the whole time, she’s working on these Christmas ornaments and decorating her trailer lot for the annual trailer-decorating contest.”
The interview between Maxwell and Scrud won’t just touch on the book and the finer points of holly and mistletoe; things will get freewheeling and punchy as the two (well, mostly Scrud) touch on more than a few hot-button local issues and local figures in typically fearless fashion.
“I wanted the show to be very supportive of the trans community, because I think that really, more than any other group of people, they’re feeling the hatred that’s been channeled and targeted toward them by the president and our governor. And I just find that to just be unconscionably sad. Even within my own community, within the gay community, there are still people who struggle to come to terms with the fact that we include the ‘T’ in LGBTQ at all. I wanted to address that as well,” says Wanzie.“But Doris has opinions on everything. She touches on local businesses, she touches on local politicians, she touches on erasing rainbow crosswalks.”
Though it’s somewhat bittersweet that Scrud cannot hold court at her familiar stomping grounds of the Carolina Moon at Parliament House, Savoy is a fiercely (ahem) festive venue for Scrud to strut her stuff. Despite it being a somewhat nontraditional venue for theater, we’re betting this is an audience willing to go drink-for-drink with Scrud and cheer on her meaner monologues.
“I hate to deal in clichés, but I think gay audiences are just more giving and more willing to laugh out loud. And then that becomes contagious and spills over to the non-gay audience members,” says Wanzie. “Even though it’s in a bar, it really is more of a theater crowd. But it is in a nightclub, and you can buy a drink before you go into the theater, and you’re welcome to carry the drink into the theater. And that always helps for a comedy, I think.”
So whether ye be naughty or nice, Deloris Scrud has some holiday home truths for you. arts@orlandoweekly.com

BY JUNO LE
The likes of Mariah Carey and Michael Bublé have been defrosted for their seasonal reign over radio stations. Yes, it must be the Yuletide season, but now some new players are ready to bring 1990s-style Christmas cheer.
Better Than Ezra’s lead vocalist and one-third of festive supergroup Ezra Ray Hart, Kevin Griffin, reveals his recipe for the perfectly baked Christmas hit to Orlando Weekly. “First thing is imagery. Part of Christmas songs is nostalgia — ‘chestnuts roasting on an open fire’ — any lyric that can conjure up nostalgia for family, Christmas, being together, food, presents and children. You also want to honor some of the
greats. Christmas songs have very complex chord progressions because they were written by jazz musicians and stuff … lyrics, too, and pushing those emotional buttons, raising the bar due to what’s already been written.”
It’s a formula, sure, but it’s one that can work beautifully under ideal circumstances.
“When you’re writing a Christmas song, the bar is lowered on ‘Is this cool enough?’ You kind of throw coolness out the window, and you’re just like, ‘Is this fun? Is it nostalgic enough?’
When you can remove all the things that make you second-guess a song when you’re writing it, then it’s a really pure expression of songwriting,” Griffin adds.
Griffin, along with Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray and Emerson Hart of Tonic, will be comin’ to town under their joint banner, Ezra Ray Hart, later this month. The trio fatefully came together after a private client booked the three of them for a show in Little Rock, Arkansas.
“It started off as doing privates as sort of this ’90s hits supergroup juggernaut, and now it’s turned into a tour. So it’s really been organic the way it started and the way it’s growing into doing a fully fledged tour like we’re bringing to Orlando,” Griffin says.
Ezra Ray Hart’s first headlining tour promises ’90s hits and Xmas riffs, blending each member’s charting catalog. “This show, by design, is gonna put a smile on your face from start to finish. Every song that we play, you’re gonna know. We do Tonic hits, Sugar Ray hits, Better Than Ezra hits. Then we do covers from your favorite ’90s bands, whether it’s Blur or Chumbawamba or Marcy Playground or Third Eye Blind — it’s gonna be a ’90s deep dive,”promises Griffin. Haters will say November is too soon to be listening to Christmas music. But Griffin believes that it’s not too early to get into the holiday spirit. “I think from Nov. 15 on it’s fair game. It’ll be the Yuletide season, and then by Nov. 30, when we descend upon Orlando, we’re gonna be in full swing. Thanksgiving will be over and it’s Christmas time.”
Griffin hints at the presence of Christmas

inflatables, but believes the rest is a surprise for fans to unwrap at the show.
“We’ve got a full lighting package with the sing-along lyrics, you know, old big-screens,” says Griffin. “We really raided Costco of every great tacky Christmas decoration we could find. I can’t give you all the secrets, you just gotta come see it for yourself.”
Griffin says that Ezra Ray Hart’s holiday tour is not just for OG fans of Better Than Ezra, Sugar Ray or Tonic. Their lineup of Christmas staples and throwbacks is sure to entertain both longtime fans and younger ones.
“We are gonna check every box for what you want. It’s gonna be fun. We’re gonna be dancing, there’s silliness involved, there are sing-alongs involved and there’s crowd participation. We’ve really spent a lot of time dialing in what we think is an incredible show with ’90s hits and Christmas riffs,” Griffin promises.

Twenty-Three Years of Luxury: The Bay Hill Jewelers Story
For more than two decades, the quiet streets of Orlando and Winter Park have held a secret—one whispered between Hollywood stylists, elite athletes, musicians, and legacy families who value privacy as much as they adore rarity.
That secret is Bay Hill Jewelers.
Founded in 2002, Bay Hill Jewelers has spent 23 years redefining what a luxury jewelry experience can be. Not with billboards or flashing lights—but through trust, artistry, and relationships that span generations. From rock stars to royals of the silver screen, from championship winners to cultural icons, the world’s most discerning individuals have found their sparkle here. Among them: the radiant June Squibb, adorned by Stacey Papp for her starring role in Eleanor the Great— Scarlett Johansson’s celebrated 2025 directorial debut.
At the heart of Bay Hill Jewelers is Stacey Papp—designer, curator, and visionary. Her gift lies not only in sculpting breathtaking jewels but in shaping moments. She understands that true luxury is personal. Every piece tells a story—crafted to be worn, lived in, and passed forward.

Over the years, Bay Hill Jewelers has become known for staying ahead of the industry—constantly reinventing, creating, and elevating. Each milestone brings a fresh concept, a new experience, a surprising twist on tradition. And yet, one thing remains unchanged: a devotion to unmatched craftsmanship and genuine human connection.
Among its most beloved offerings is the legendary Treasure Box Appointment—a hallmark of the brand. With more than 30 years of combined expertise, the Bay Hill team invites clients to bring their estate jewelry in abundance—the forgotten pieces, the heirlooms, the glittering mysteries tucked away in velvet drawers. What follows is magic: a meticulous assessment of era, significance, value, and potential. Some jewels are reborn as modern heirlooms. Some find new homes. All are honored, all are seen.
This season, in celebration of 23 extraordinary years, Bay Hill Jewelers will be giving back to the community in a monumental way—
with a one-time Legacy Liquidation Event. For the first time in our history, we are opening our vaults and offering treasured merchandise at unprecedented values. This is not simply a sale—it is our way of expressing gratitude for the support, love, and loyalty that have shaped our journey. With this moment, we will begin a bold transformation of our flagship into an elevated custom design studio—where every client will experience a personalized creative process, and every piece will be a one-of-a-kind work of art. We are so excited for this
next chapter and hope you join us for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a part of Bay Hill history.
This is where stories are rediscovered… and where new ones begin.
For 23 years, Bay Hill Jewelers has been more than a boutique. It is a sanctuary of brilliance and imagination. A place where privacy is sacred, creativity is limitless, and luxury feels like being welcomed home.
And as the next chapter unfolds, one thing is certain: The world is discovering what Orlando has quietly known all along— Some treasures are meant to be found by those who truly seek them.

SARAH BRIGHTMAN PLAYS THE KIA CENTER (COURTESY PHOTO)
‘More than ever, we need to be loud, proud and visible’: This week’s Q Fest at The Center sheds light on queer artists in Central Florida
If you’re searching for a fabulous excuse to be out in Orlando this week, look no further than Q Fest (tinyurl.com/qfest25), the four-day celebration of LGBTQIA+ theater and film filling The Center from Nov. 13-16. I recently spoke with The Center’s CEO, George Wallace, about how this year’s inaugural Q Fest emerged from the ashes of Orlando Fringe’s Orlando Out Fest and why such an event is so important right now for the queer community and its allies.
The Center traces its origins back nearly half a century to Orlando’s Gay Men’s Crisis hotline — whose number was 407-THE-GAYS — and Gay Community Services, which later merged and established their first brick-and-mortar location in the late 1980s where Will’s Pub now stands. It bounced around various buildings along Colonial Drive until the current property on Mills Avenue was purchased in 1999. Wallace, who was previously the executive director of Orlando Fringe, joined the The Center’s board of directors in 2014 and has been CEO since 2017.
“The mission has always connected with me, because I love the fact that allies are in the mission,” says Wallace, noting that the people utilizing The Center’s HIV and STI testing, mental health services and food bank predominantly don’t identify as LGBTQ. “Orlando is such a unique community with the support from the ally community, and when you look at the services we offer, depending on what department it is, over 60 percent of the people that utilize The Center are not gay.”
Wallace was originally set to produce the second iteration of OOF, before the event was canceled due to lack of an affordable venue. But after several Fringe veterans successfully used The Center’s multipurpose room as an intimate performance venue, Wallace was inspired
(with Fringe’s blessing and technical support) to revive the spirit of OOF there as Q Fest, albeit in a somewhat slimmed-down form. “I know it’s not a 250-seat theater; it’s not even 100 seats,” Wallace says he recalls thinking. “But why can’t I do something?”
While the majority of the artists at Q Fest are carry-overs from OOF’s planned lineup, Wallace says he had to concentrate on selecting solo shows — such as Natalie Doliner’s new What Is Remembered Lives cabaret — and small-scale casts. “I knew that I couldn’t get like a huge burlesque group in, but I reached out to Risa Risqué of Blacklist Babes because they have a smaller troupe,” Wallace says. “In my opinion, I picked the cream of the crop of the smaller shows.”
As a result, Q Fest’s four days of programming spans the gamut of the gay experience, with content for every genre and age group.“We have lesbian representation, we have trans representation, we have a nonbinary performer,” says Wallace. “We have comedy magic, and in our variety show we’ve got a stand-up comic.”
Films like Welcome to Queertown and Wanzie With a Z pay tribute to Orlando’s queer history; and Truth or Dare With P. Sparkle, Tymisha Harris: Q the Legends and Drag Queen Story Hour After Dark With Addison Taylor feature long-running local icons; while Bruce Costella’s Spooky & Gay Volume II and Jeremiah Gibbons’ Miah in Love represent the region’s rising stars. Whether you want adult-only comedy like Professor Love’s Midnight Spectacular (a Saturday-only benefit performance for The Center) or family-friendly fare such as illusionist Nick Comis’ Parlor Tricks, there’s something at Q Fest for everyone.
Based on advance ticket sales, Q Fest’s most
anticipated show features its youngest performer. Just Dempsey! is the first-ever live variety show starring Dempsey Jara, a trans teenager “with a big voice and an even bigger personality,” who is best known for serving as the Grand Marshal of Orlando’s 2023 Come Out With Pride parade at age 11.
“This is a kid that I fully believe that in 10 years when she’s starring on Broadway, you’d be like, ‘Oh my god, I saw her at The Center,’” Wallace says about Dempsey, who will be kibitzing candidly about her life between belting out her favorite Broadway hits. “She’s been a spokesperson, she’s been to Tallahassee and spoke in front of the Senate; she’s amazing!”
To keep Q Fest accessible, ticket prices are capped at a maximum of $18 plus fees and a $3 festival button. Proceeds are split between The Center and the artists, excepts for some fundraisers like screenings of A Day in the Life of Miss Sammy, benefiting the Singhaus Scholarship for the Performing Arts, and the opening-night preview supporting Fringe’s Doug Bowser Memorial Scholarship Fund.
If you have any question why a festival like this needed, “when the Orlando Weekly publishes a story about the LGBTQ community, just go online and read the comments,” says Wallace. “So much of what is happening with the queer community is erasure or trying to erase us. It’s everything from banning books to not allowing flags to erasing sidewalks; it’s almost like ‘out of sight, out of mind.’ So I’m of the mindset that we can’t let that happen. … More than ever, we need to be loud, proud and visible, and this festival sheds the light on the queer artists in Central Florida.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

ALMOST PARADISE
Moa Kai Hawaiian Diner brings fuss-free island classics to Colonial Drive
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Iwalked into a diner one fall evening in a bit of a state. The better team losing a certain winner-take-all baseball game had me enveloped in a brooding stupor for nearly 48 hours. Not that I felt a need to act out a cinematic trope, mind you, but stepping into this diner, an empty diner at that, did just that. In my mind, I’d park my keister on a backless red-leather stool, bury my head in a cup of black coffee, and sulk about the team’s lost opportunities. Only this was Moa Kai — a bright, buoyant, aloha-spirited Hawaiian diner. Here, the backless leather stools gleamed, and the words “Huli Pau” lit up the tropical wallpaper behind the bar in vivid neon. But instead of coffee, it was hōkū poni, a purplish beverage of Kula white rum, ube syrup, coconut milk and lime juice, in which sorrows were drowned. Refreshing, yes, though it didn’t help my mood much.
But I gotta hand it to the server. He encouraged me to eat, even as they were readying to close Moa Kai in 25 minutes. So I landed on the most comforting item I could find — loco moco ($15), Hawaii’s answer to Salisbury steak. Here the patty of beef is served over white rice
and topped with a fried egg. A slather of brown gravy, sauteed onions and mushrooms, however, wasn’t just mood-enhancing, it lent the dish proper diner status, and I scarfed it down.
My disposition was somewhat more pleasant when I returned with a pal, himself in a state of lament thanks to the vagaries of fantasy football. Enter the healing effects of fried spam musubi ($7). The panko’d block drizzled in a spicy sauce helped turn his frown the other way ’round, so that by the time we sunk our pearlies into soft, doughy manapua ($8) — steamed bao filled with char siu pork — our grins were evident. The restaurant’s name, BTW, is in reference to moa — those treasured, feathered, feral chickens that freely roam the Hawaiian Islands. No surprise, then, that chicken is very much present on Moa Kai’s menu. In the garlic fried noodles ($16), the morsels are flavored with shoyu; in the skewers ($10), they’re marinated in teriyaki; in the Korean chicken ($15), they’re battered, fried and sauced.
And it’s all so unfussy, so void of frills and so very diner to the core. Owner Hoi Nguyen, who operated The Mongolorian in this very space
KAI HAWAIIAN DINER
2217 E. Colonial Drive 407-270-7916 moakaidiner.com
for a year before closing it last summer, and who also owns Poke Hana just down the street, wanted a concept that tapped into his love for Hawaiian culture. And Hawaii’s culture, as I’m sure you’re now aware, is infused with plenty of Asian influence.
Moa Kai’s “plate lunches,” Hawaii’s version of meat-and-three (or meat-and-two, in Moa Kai’s case), offer heftier options, none heftier than kalbi ($24). The thick-cut ribs marinated in shoyu and pineapple juice are a tad sweeter than their Korean counterparts, but crowd-pleasing nonetheless. The ribs are served with sides of white rice flecked with sesame seeds and mac & cheese. Plate lunches can be enjoyed with everything from kalua pork and cabbage ($15) to panko-fried mahi ($20) to garlic shrimp ($17).
The Portuguese also left their mark on the island cuisine, most notably the deep-fried donuts called malasadas ($8). To say the sugar-coated puffs filled with haupia (coconut custard) and lilikoi (passion fruit) left us cheerful would be somewhat true. To say they negated our blues would be more accurate. In fact, in true Hawaiian fashion, they were swept away.

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.
BY STEVE SCHNEIDER
Premieres Wednesday:
Being Eddie — Did you know that Shalimar Seiuli, the trans hooker Eddie Murphy was caught with in 1998, died a year later, after falling five stories down the face of her apartment building? Don’t expect to hear that fun factoid in this official retrospective of the legendary comedian’s career. But maybe we’ll get to see “James Brown’s Celebrity Hot Tub Party” again. (Netflix)
A Merry Little Ex-Mas — On the cusp of their divorce, Alicia Silverstone and Oliver Hudson have plans to spend one final holiday together. But when his new girlfriend shows up, even that humble aspiration becomes a tall order. See, this is why it’s always better to make a clean break, like the Murdaughs did. (Netflix)
Premieres Thursday:
The Beast in Me — Afflicted by writer’s block since losing her son, an author (Claire Danes) gets interested in life again when a suspected murderer moves in next door. And
The Creep Tapes Season 2 — David Dastmalchian is among the guest stars as the found-footage series profiles new victims of the insidious Peachfuzz. Coincidentally, “the insidious peach fuzz” is what Usha has been calling JD ever since he started coming home smelling like Erika Kirk and White Claw. (Shudder and AMC+)
Malice — It’s Saltburn without the whacking off, as a vengeful nanny (Jack Whitehall) plots the destruction of an upper-class British family headed by David Duchovny. Wait a minute, if it’s Fox Mulder we’re talking about, this is probably more like BRIGHTburn. WITH whacking off. (Prime Video )
Nouvelle Vague — Richard Linklater dramatizes the filming of Godard’s Breathless in what Variety called “an enchanting ode to the rapture of cinema.” In their spare time, they all break into Barnes & Noble together and lick the Criterion Collection. (Netflix)
The Seduction — The umpteenth riff on Les Liaisons Dangereuses is a prequel series that has roles for Anamaria Vartolomei, Diane Kruger and Vincent Lacoste. Not to be outdone, Disney+ has placed an eight-episode order for Cruel Intentions Babies. (HBO Max)
Premieres Sunday:
Landman — High-profile cast additions in Season 2 of the Texas big-oil drama include Colm Feore, Andy Garcia and Sam Elliott. Wait a minute, you’re telling me Sam Elliott wasn’t already in this thing? I thought SAG had a rule that you have to hire him if your show is set west of New Orleans and there’s a role for Dennis Weaver with pharyngitis. (Paramount+)
Premieres Monday:
why shouldn’t she? In the best-case scenario, she could get a whole new novel out of it. Especially if she can figure out how to outsource the adverbs to ChatGPT. (Netflix)
Tiffany Haddish Goes Off — The irrepressible comic actor and some of her childhood buddies take a wacky girls’ trip to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. No Nigeria, though, because a Signal chat they’re all on said some shit is about to go down. (Peacock)
Premieres Friday:
Come See Me in the Good Light — Documentary cameras follow married poets Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley as they navigate Gibson’s diagnosis of ovarian cancer. This doc won the Festival Film Favorite Award at this year’s Sundance, just five months before Gibson passed away. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame want you to know they could be just as punctual if this country would get off its ass and standardize Daylight Saving Time. (Apple TV)
Epic Ride: The Story of Universal Theme Parks — This glorified ad for the Universal family of parks has now been delayed two times since its promised launch last July. The problem is that they keep having to update it every time somebody snuffs it on Stardust Racers. (Peacock)
The Mighty Nein — While you wait for the fifth and final season of The Legend of Vox Machina, enjoy the same cast of Critical Role principals in this stopgap animated show set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Or you could just visit your local comic shop on whatever day of the week everybody’s mom cleans out the basement. (Prime Video)
Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy — The Tejano sensation’s short but groundbreaking career is recapped in a doc that also won big at year’s Sundance, this one in the category of Archival Storytelling. The runner-up in that category: “The Inspiring Life and Brilliant Future of Andrew Cuomo.” (Netflix)

WINONA FOREVER
Rising pop-punkers Winona Fighter do Warped double duty in Orlando
BY AZLYN CATO
“We are running off of pure love of doing what we do, and I want it to be an escape for people. I want them to have 30 minutes to an hour out of their day where they can just be a little freak and run around and punch and whatever.”
Coco Kinnon, frontwoman of rising Nashvillebased pop-punk band Winona Fighter, started early in music: drumming on stage at the age of 12, playing underground shows in the New England punk scene.
Kinnon, whose father raised her on rock and grunge, always found herself drawn to punk. But after joining her first band (a punk band, of course), she started to fall in love with more than just the music, but also the punk scene.
“The music is very scary and harsh, and the mosh pits can be a little much for people,” Kinnon tells Orlando Weekly, “but it’s also a community where everyone has each other’s back and everyone’s welcome, and it’s open to all new faces and to those who are young and old.”
Years later, Kinnon met bassist and producer
Austin Luther, who was into late-’90s and early-aughts alternative, and lead guitarist Dan Fuson, who loved ’ 80s metal. The three shared a mutual drive to play in a rock band.
“So for me, it was like that feeling of taking what I grew up in and bringing it into something new and fresh, because Nashville doesn’t really have a punk scene,” says Kinnon. “And for the boys, it was like this cool introduction to a totally new community.”
Before the release of their first EP, Father Figure, in 2022, the band was just going by Kinnon’s nickname, “Coco.” Then one night, after mulling over potential band names, Luther — a pop-culture obsessive — came up with “Winona Fighter.”
Kinnon felt the name was “the perfect balance of masculine and feminine, like pretty, but harsh.”
Thus Winona Fighter was born, and they are now part of the lineup of the 2025 Vans Warped Tour on the heels of their latest album, My Apologies to the Chef.
Kinnon describes the whole thing as surreal, with the band gearing up to head to Orlando not
just to play the main fest, but also Will’s Pub for an official afterparty — all on Saturday.
“I grew up going to Warped Tour, and I looked up to these bands, and I looked up to bands that were as big/little as we are. I thought they were like the shit,” says Kinnon.“It’s so funny now to be in that position of, you know, we’re still grinding so much, and we’re still doing van tours. We’re still little fish in such a big pond. But to know that we are having that weird impact on people that I had with the bands I saw at Warped Tour and Warped afterparties, it’s such a really cool, exciting thing for us.”
Luther recorded their entire album in his home studio, which also doubles as a garage. Kinnon, who helped produce the record, says the band loves to do as much as possible by themselves, staying true to their DIY roots.
As a pop-punk band, they created this new album to make punk accessible to all music lovers. Kinnon says the goal was to make a record of really catchy punk music that would appeal to people unfamiliar with the genre, even to those who weren’t into “super thrashable, yelly, loud punk music.”
The record’s lyrics center on the human experience and universal struggles of daily life, with tracks like “You Look Like a Drunk Phoebe Bridgers”and “I’m in the Market to Please No One.”
“Everyone can listen to the record and find one song where they relate to it, because it’s like we all go through these things,” says Kinnon.
“Everyone feels like it’s a lonely, unique experience, but in reality, there’s always someone who can relate to what you are going through.”
For Kinnon, every day with the band feels like an impactful moment.
“Every moment, even if it’s like, we show up and the green room has our little snacks that we like, or we show up and there’s even 50 people in a room, it’s so cool to us, like, ‘Oh, we are reaching people, and we are having an impact,’” says Kinnon. “Or we write a song that we think no one’s gonna understand. But then people are on Reddit and they’re just like, ‘Wow, this song hit me hard.’ Every day we have something that happens that is just very surreal for us.”
It’s that same passion for what they’re doing that helps the band whip up high energy onstage and in the crowd. Kinnon says it’s a mix between a true love of performing and a desire to give fans an outlet.
For aspiring Warpers out there, Kinnon says that chasing viral moments won’t help you grow as artists. Instead, it’s the tough shows or embarrassing moments that help artists find themselves and their community much quicker.
“Pick up a guitar, get out, play shows. Be kind, be willing to learn and it’ll come. What you’re looking for will come if you just put your head down and keep grinding, keep learning, keep being kind. That’s all you can really do. And make music you’re excited to make.”

LOCAL RELEASES
What’s in a name? Sometimes, everything. In the case of Orlando band Please Be Kind, that unabashedly tender moniker is true, both to their mien and intent. No ironic twist or sardonic backhand here. Just a warm, inviting world of sweetly soft indie-pop dreams. I’m already checking to see if one-way tickets are available. Please Be Kind have been around for more than a handful of years, but it’s their recent resurgence that’s especially worth watching. After some small pre-pandemic releases and then an extended hiatus, the group helmed by bandleader and songwriter TJ Perry (they/ them) are back and in high gear, now gigging regularly and finally ready to release their first full-length album.
On Nov. 14, Please Be Kind will drop the Silver Lining LP. It’s a pop exercise in indie timelessness, with one foot each in dream pop and indie rock. The 10-song collection maximizes its tapestry with a bright blend of organic and electronic instruments and a palette that goes from acoustic (“Darling”) to fully electronic (“True Blue”). Mostly, however, the album is an effective amalgam that allows the soft, caressing melodies to take flight in vivid, prismatic strokes. It’s a sedate splendor that lies somewhere between Alvvays and Fear of Men that climaxes in songs like the perfect fuzz-pop effervescence of “Meteor Shower,” the twilight exhale of “Suburban Fever” and the synth glide of “Pink Parallax.”
Silver Lining will hit major streaming platforms on Nov. 14. But Orlando gets an early premiere the night before at Please Be Kind’s release show presented by Montgomery Drive at Stardust Video & Coffee (7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, $15), where they’ll perform alongside openers Sky Navy, Paracosm, Paperback Romance and

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Ren Night: If you were wishing that someone could only make ren faires cool, then come forth ye lords and ladies with all your finery and make plans for the all-ages Ren Night by upstart promoters Blood Moon Bookings. It’ll be a full concert lineup of new shoegaze and heavy bands featuring No Clue, Deer, Fawn and Suisside. What do they have to do with the Renaissance? Don’t know, don’t care — because it’s a great slice of the rising young class of Orlando indie talent. But for those who do care, the organizers are serious about wanting attendees to come in
full costume. So get all medieval and go on with your royal self. (8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, Will’s Pub, $11-$16)
Orange 9mm, Bold, Day by Day, 0 Miles Per Hour, Watch List: Of all the 1990s redux happening right now, smart punks should be most pumped about the reunion of NYC post-hardcore heroes Orange 9mm. Officially reforming last year after nearly a quarter-century, the groundbreaking band are back live to bring their progressive fury — which boldly spans punk, metal, rock and rap — to a whole new generation and, of course, their cool dads who were there back in the day. Opening will be youth-crew legends Bold alongside a Florida punk division that includes Day by Day, 0 Miles Per Hour and Watch List. (6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, Conduit, $30)
The Cello Goblin: There is no discussing The Cello Goblin with a straight face. First, there’s that name. Then, you’ve got a trained cellist who performs with the hysteria of someone hopped up on speed and Primus. It’s as crazy as it sounds. It’s also way sicker than you can possibly imagine. Behind all the freaky mania of Rushad Eggleston’s alter ego is a deeply accomplished string master whose career includes being a member in revered alt-bluegrass band Crooked Still (alongside local celeb Aoife O’Donovan), string supergroup Fiddlers 4, and Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings. So what you’ve got is an avant-garde wildman unafraid to blend seriously legit string chops with kazoos and Angus Young-esque showmanship. In other words, a guaranteed and total show. Food by Jes Tantalo, plus coffee and sweets from the Palestinianowned Zayn & Co. coffee truck will also be on tap. “While we find it rather controversial that some prefer ice in their beer, our establishment definitely does not want I.C.E. in our beer nor in our community,” the pub shared. 4 p.m., Redlight Redlight, 2810 Corrine Drive, facebook.com/redlightredlight, free. — McKenna Schueler

This is Foxy (A577160), and like her name implies, she is absolutely beautiful. Foxy is that perfect combination of sweetness and energy. Our vets put her at anywhere between 3 to 5 years of age, but in our yards, she definitely gives out puppy vibes. Foxy is a happy dog — compact, strong and healthy. When she first arrived at our shelter, she was bubbly, friendly with other dogs and easy to pair. But after a few months, we could tell kennel frustration was getting the better of her. Foxy is the kind of dog that needs a long walk, and right after, an even longer cuddling session with her owner.
Intelligent, affectionate and extremely photogenic, this sweet girl is just waiting for the right person to notice her. Barely 40 pounds, Foxy packs a lot of punch for a small dog, and she’s not afraid to be a show-stopper. Her confidence, adorable eye patch and affectionate personality have made her an easy staff favorite. We’re all rooting for her and hoping that she catches the right person’s eye.
Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-8363111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
