Orange County takes last steps to terminate agreement with OnePulse, President Biden pins six-week abortion ban on Trump during Florida visit, Worrell and Warren qualify to run, and other news you may have missed.

» Orange County officially terminates agreement with dissolved OnePulse organization

With little discussion on the matter, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to officially terminate their $10 million agreement with the OnePulse organization, after a county attorney informed the board that county staff had completed the necessary logistical steps to do so. The nonprofit entered into a $10 million agreement with Orange County in 2018, funded by tourist development tax funds, and was awarded a $500,000 grant from the state a year later in 2019. A second state grant — worth $680,000 — was allocated for OnePulse in 2020. Some of those funds have been repaid or returned, while much has been determined unrecoverable. The state confirmed just last week that OnePulse had repaid the nearly $400,000 in public money that it had received from the state as part of that first grant. The remainder of that first allocation was left unspent. The second $680,000 state grant awarded in 2020 was apparently spent by OnePulse on employee salaries. Close to home, OnePulse had used roughly $6.5 million of its funds from the Orange County agreement for its Pulse Museum/memorial before dissolving. Three million dollars were spent on design fees, while another $3.5 million was spent on a property on West Kaley Street that is slated to be returned to the county. Not, however, before OnePulse last month left Orange County taxpayers on the hook for paying the $51,000 property tax bill on it. The organization was founded in 2016 to build a memorial to honor the victims and survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting that left 49 people dead and dozens wounded.

» Local union barista weighs in on Supreme Court hearing Starbucks case The U.S. Supreme Court last week heard oral arguments in a legal battle between Starbucks and the National Labor Relations Board. At the heart of the issue is the federal labor board’s authority to order Starbucks to rehire seven workers at a location in Memphis that Starbucks is accused of firing in retaliation for organizing a union at their store. The so-called “Memphis 7” were fired just days after announcing their intent to unionize with Starbucks Workers United, in what the workers say was a violation of their federally protected right to organize. Starbucks has claimed the workers were fired for violating company policy. Nationally, over 400 Starbucks locations are now unionized. Locally, there is just one unionized Starbucks — in Oviedo. Shift supervisor Clay Blastic, who works at that Oviedo Starbucks, told us he hopes the Supreme Court “makes the right decision” in the Memphis case, but that he isn’t holding his breath. Meanwhile, Blastic confirmed that his store finally got its credit card tipping option back for customers, something Starbucks had illegally withheld from union stores. Blastic said he was heading to Washington, D.C., to begin finally hammering out their first union contract —Starbucks has stalled, and yet has blamed the union for the delay. The Oviedo Starbucks first unionized in June 2022.

» Biden pins Florida’s six-week abortion ban on Trump during Tampa visit President Joe Biden visited Tampa last week to speak about abortion rights, eight days before the state of Florida’s rigid six-week abortion ban went into effect. However, his main topic was former President Donald Trump, whom he’s expected to face again this November at this polls. Biden mentioned that abortion rights measures have been successful in both blue and red states across the country in the past two years since Roe was overturned, and he predicted that Floridians will go the same way when voting on an abortion rights measure (Amendment 4) this fall. Biden also promised that if he was reelected, he and Vice President Kamala Harris would make Roe v. Wade “the law of the land again.” However, such a law would need to get 60 votes in the U.S. Senate. The president’s visit to Florida is the first time he has come to the Sunshine State — formerly a swing state — this year, as the state has moved into red territory. Biden lost to Trump by 3.3 percentage points in 2020, and recent polls show the gap has increased between the two presumptive major party nominees this year. The GOP currently has a big lead over Democrats in registered voters, with more than 892,000 registered Republicans than registered Democrats as of March 31, according to state records.

» DeSantis approves $1.5 billion from Florida budget for Everglades restoration Gov. Ron DeSantis says he will approve $1.5 billion directed toward Everglades cleanup that was included in the budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1, which he has not yet received. The funding includes $614 million for projects within the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration

Plan, or CERP; $100 million for the Indian River Lagoon; $45 million for Biscayne Bay and the Caloosahatchee Estuary; and $530 million for water quality improvement projects, including grants for septic-to-sewer conversions and wastewater treatment upgrades. The funding is separate from a bill DeSantis has already signed that directs money from the Seminole Tribe of Florida into buying and maintaining land in a state wildlife corridor, removing invasive species and converting properties from using septic tanks to sewer systems. The money from the Seminoles comes from a deal allowing the tribe to offer online sports betting statewide. The $117.46 billion budget (HB 5001) is among 164 bills from the 2024 legislative session that have not yet been delivered to DeSantis.

» Suspended prosecutors Worrell and Warren qualify to run Two prosecutors suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis have qualified to run in November for their old positions. Democrat Monique Worrell last Thursday qualified to run for state attorney in the 9th Judicial Circuit in Orange and Osceola counties. DeSantis suspended Worrell last year and replaced her with Andrew Bain, who will run in November without party affiliation. “As I’ve said time and time again, we all have to do our part in order to restore democracy in Central Florida!” Worrell said in an online post last Friday. Earlier in the week, Democrat Andrew Warren qualified to run for state attorney in the 13th Judicial Circuit in Hillsborough County, where he has been elected twice. DeSantis suspended Warren in August 2022 and replaced him with Republican Suzy Lopez, who is running for a full term in November. The suspensions spurred legal challenges, with Warren’s high-profile case still pending at the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

JetBlue accused of antiunion tactics at Orlando International Airport

Orlando’s Maxwell Frost joined other members of Congress in calling on JetBlue to allow their employees to organize without unlawful interference

Low-cost airline JetBlue has been called out for alleged interference in employees’ organizing efforts, with at least two local members of Congress joining a call from the Congressional Labor Caucus to cut it out.

Orlando’s U.S. House Rep. Maxwell Frost joined a bipartisan group of 160 members of Congress in penning a letter to JetBlue last Wednesday, asking the company to cease “antiunion” tactics alleged by the country’s largest airline workers’ union, and to allow their employees to have a “free and fair choice” to join a union.

“As is required by law, unionization efforts must be permitted to occur free from interference, whether from supervisors or organizations at-large,” reads a letter sent by members of the Congressional Labor Caucus and others to JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty.

“It has come to our attention that there have been instances of anti-organizing interference at JetBlue from management,” the letter adds.

Over the last year, two groups of aviation mechanics and air dispatchers for JetBlue have been organizing with the Transport Workers Union, a labor union that represents over 155,000 workers in the railway, airline, transit, university and service sectors, including JetBlue flight attendants.

According to the union, the workers’ organizing campaigns have faced consistent opposition from JetBlue management, despite provisions of the Railway Labor Act that strictly prohibit employers from interfering with workers’ right to organize and collectively bargain.

In light of that, a sizable group of Democrats and even some Republicans in Congress have urged JetBlue to adopt what’s known as a union neutrality agreement.

This would essentially establish a commitment from JetBlue not to interfere with, or attempt to sway employees on matters related to their lawfully protected right to organize.

“Your commitment to neutrality would ensure that management does not pressure workers into voting against unionization or delaying the

election process, and it would signal to workers that supporting an organizing drive would not negatively impact their employment,” the letter from the Congressional members reads.

Notably, Maxwell Frost is the only Central Florida-area member of Congress who officially signed onto the letter.

Orlando Weekly reached out to Rep. Darren Soto — also an ally to organized labor — who confirmed in a statement that he similarly supports the union’s efforts “to give JetBlue workers the opportunity to unionize free from intimidation and harassment.”

However, instead of joining his colleagues, Soto decided to write his own, separate letter to JetBlue. In this letter, Soto asked the company to please follow the law, while adding that he “appreciate[s] JetBlue’s continued commitment to and investment in Orlando.”

According to Transport Workers Union president John Samuelsen, who’s based out of New York, the letter featuring signatures from 160 members of Congress is a direct response to what Samuelsen describes as a “draconian crackdown” on JetBlue employees’ union drive.

airline without a unionized workforce of flight attendants.

“They’re worse than Delta,” Samuelsen said. Photos posted online last week by the TWU show anti-union flyers and other materials ostensibly posted in employee break rooms, airport lounges, and other spots that workers frequent, including areas at Orlando International Airport (MCO), one of the busiest air hubs in the country.

‘JetBlue is in the process of trying to intimidate the living daylights out of every single worker not to sign a card’

“They have responded to every single organizing drive with the most anti-trade union, anti-worker aggression of any employer in the country,” Samuelsen told Orlando Weekly, “especially of any employer in the airline industry.”

And that’s saying something. Delta Airlines is notorious in the labor movement for its yearslong effort to remain the only major U.S.

According to an email reviewed by The Guardian, this included things like holiday parties, a new app launch and bag scanners.

“Don’t be fooled — the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence and you don’t have to look over that fence to see what unions have done (or failed to do) at other airlines,” Geraghty reportedly wrote.

When reached for comment Thursday, a spokesperson for JetBlue called TWU’s allegations of anti-union behavior from company management “inaccurate.”

“After hearing from union organizers, our crewmembers often ask us to share our perspectives so that they can consider multiple points of view and we have a responsibility to participate in the discussion,” an unnamed spokesperson shared over email. “We work very hard to make JetBlue a great place to work, and in many cases, our crewmembers have preferred the direct relationship over unionization.”

JetBlue also denies any unlawful behavior. “Our track record shows that we fully comply with the law and respect our crewmembers’ right to decide without interference,” the company spokesperson added.

“There’s a reason union promises may sound too good to be true — they often are,” one white-andblue flyer, apparently posted somewhere at MCO, reads. “A union can promise whatever it wants, but can’t guarantee anything,” the flyer adds (which is ironic, since — unlike a union contract — neither can the boss!).

In some ways, the company’s opposition is unsurprising, since they’ve opposed union drives before. The TWU, for instance, already represents JetBlue flight instructors and JetBlue flight attendants — who voted to unionize with TWU in 2018, despite opposition from the company then, too.

Back in 2019, The Guardian reported on antiunion messaging that JetBlue had continued to pass along to a separate group of airport operations agents and others who were similarly organizing with the union.

Over email, for instance, JetBlue CEO Geraghty reportedly urged employees in 2019 to decline to sign a union card, arguing the union would never be able to provide them with the same “accomplishment” that JetBlue has.

Samuelsen, however, said that JetBlue employees have told union staffers they’re being intimidated on the job. “JetBlue is in the process of trying to intimidate the living daylights out of every single worker not to sign a card,” he said. Job termination, for instance, has been a big concern. According to Samuelsen, the issue of job security is what sparked “renewed interest” in organizing among the airline’s nonunion workforce. This reared its head especially when JetBlue announced plans to acquire Spirit Airlines back in 2022. Such a merger, Samuelsen said, “would destabilize everything.”

The controversial merger was called off in March, weeks after a federal judge blocked the deal, but Samuelsen says the desire for better job protections and job security that a union can lock down in a contract is unchanged.

“Workers have stepped up and embraced the moment,” he said. At this point, their campaign — spread across different air hubs throughout the country — is largely being driven by rank-and-file committees of employees at these different sites and full-time staff union organizers who help spread the word on-the-ground.

Meanwhile, members of the Transport Workers Union at Southwest Airlines have just ratified a new contract covering more than 21,000 of Southwest’s flight attendants, after a majority rejected a previous deal reached in December that members felt wasn’t up to par. According to the union, the deal delivers a 22.3 percent raise for Southwest flight attendants, effective May 1, as well as paid maternal and parental leave, additional pay for work done on the ground (instead of solely on the plane), and pay protections for flight attendants who are injured on the job.

UCF for Palestine

Students, faculty, organizers rally in protest of Israel’s occupation of Gaza

University of Central Florida students and other organizations joined forces early Friday afternoon to rally in protest of Israel’s occupation of Gaza near the UCF Reflecting Pond. Student organizations in attendance were UCF Young Democratic Socialists of America, UCF Students for a Democratic Society, the NAACP, Pakistani Student Association and Florida Student Power Network.

UCF has not released a comment about the event.

The rally took place just one day after the University of Florida threatened pro-Palestinian student demonstrators with suspension and banishment from campus for three years if they violate a host of rules of behavior in protests that continued for two days.

Last week, during an appearance by President Biden in Tampa to discuss Florida’s looming abortion ban, a pro-Palestinian contingent held a “No genocide Joe” demonstration nearby to protest the billions of dollars in military aid that the U.S. has sent to Israel amid the conflict. feedback@orlandoweekly.com

BRIGHT SIDE

Shannon Elyse Curry and Nneka Jones share an Afrofuturist

‘View From Within’ at Maitland Art Center gallery

It is impossible to overstate how different the world was in 1937 when André Smith created the Research Studio, now part of the Art and History Museums of Maitland. Knocking over the South’s Jim Crow barriers and traditional male art-world barriers, Smith saw within the heart of the artist by collaborating with Zora Neale Hurston in nearby Eatonville, among many others. This view from within is the current exhibit’s theme, bringing together Shannon Elyse Curry and Nneka Jones, two Black artists. These intensely talented young painters from Tampa share their own vigorous and colorful work, hinting at an Afrofuturist vision. This exhibit was curated by the Links Foundation, a not-for-profit composed of African American professional women founded in 1946. Dan Hess, the Art and History Center’s curator, says. “It was an honor to work with this organization to bring their vision of these two artists to our gallery.”

Curry and Jones bring rich experiences from their wide travels back to Florida. Curry, born in California, maintains her studio in

South Tampa and paints from her experience as the daughter of a naval officer. “I moved 13 times before going off to college,” she reveals in her artist’s statement.

Her work focuses on a personal quest for beauty and joy, visible in “Self Portrait #3,” a tightly cropped eyes-nose-lips portrait on a large canvas, where she built up deliciously complex layers of greens, soft reds, and ochres into skin tones rich with translucency and reflected light. The eyes glitter mystically as if fixed on something far in the distance.

Nneka Jones is originally from Port of Spain, Trinidad, and in her artist’s statement she says she uses art as “a universal language that can connect people from many different cultures.” With Trinidad’s diversity, there’s good precedent. Jones’ unique process involves hand embroidery, laying basic color fields of acrylic onto a canvas to block out the composition and completing the work with colored threads. “Point of Intersection,” a portrait she completed as a part of a series she calls Beyond the Horizon, is nearly all embroidery, with vermilion, aqua, charcoal and crimson threads softly texturing the face of the figure.

THE VIEW FROM WITHIN Through July 14

Art and History Museums — Maitland 231 W. Packwood Ave., Maitland 407-539-2181 artandhistory.org

$6

Lest one mistakes this for a show of pure portraiture, both artists work in abstraction as well. Jones’ triptych of circular canvases integrate large, partially unzipped zippers revealing roundels of color as sort of targets for the viewer to contemplate. Curry’s “Twilight” is a large abstraction uplifting her memories of sunsets, which she confessed were her touchstone throughout her multiple moves during childhood. Its gorgeous layers of sunset yellows and magentas fade into indigo and are dotted with black-and-white bubbles, making it read both as a panorama and a closeup at the same time.

Curry says, “There are viewers who want to see a specific concept presented by a Black female artist, preferably a concept highlighting struggle, pain, abuse, and marginalization.” Although she and Jones both continue to experience these hardships, both also see them as only a component of who they are as artists. This is the Afrofuturist vision, where Black creators make Black stories independent of their relationship with other races. Seeing these works by emerging artists gives the viewer a glimpse of the exciting world of tomorrow, coming full circle from André Smith’s original effort.

When you watch a game show on television, do you have a habit of shouting out the answers ahead of the onscreen contestants — to the point that your friends and family tell you to either audition yourself, or shut up? The Bureau on International Drive is branching out their escape room and adventure game options, and I recently got to be a beta tester for The Underground Game Show, a brand-new offering that officially launched last weekend. It might not quite cure your jones to go on Jeopardy or fulfill all your Double Dare dreams, but going Underground proved to be an engaging upgrade over my usual family game night arguments over Reagan-era Trivial Pursuit answers.

Ever since opening in 2020 during the peak of the pandemic, the Bureau has survived and thrived, establishing itself as one of Orlando’s most polished independent escape room operations with imaginative missions involving puppets and cryptids. Competitors opting for

the Underground Game Show still get to enter through the same speakeasy-style anteroom, which is disguised as an antique travel agency, before being ushered into a retro-futurist lobby (think Bioshock’s Rapture meets Loki’s TVA).

The Underground Game Show takes place inside a room previously used as a VIP lounge, which has now been outfitted with a pair of long podiums with buttons for players to buzz in and a large vertical video screen for displaying questions and scores. While lacking the elaborate scenic detail of the adjoining escape rooms, it sets the stage sufficiently for a six-on-six showdown; as few as two people can play, and larger groups may be accommodated using a smartphone app.

Completing the package is an in-person emcee, and Zac Adelson, our velvet-tuxed host, proved adept at accompanying the hourlong contest with a constant commentary track of snarky patter, keeping the show rolling despite some

plate, balance an egg on a spoon while wearing distorting goggles, or eat a cookie balanced on their forehead without using their hands. These interactive interludes provide a welcome change of pace, and the best bits (like a blindfolded riff on Pictionary) got the entire room animated, but several stunts seemed clunky or undercooked. I’ve always feared that if I were to appear on a game show, I’d be stuck knowing the answers but unable to work the buzzer. Initially the Underground appeared insistent on manifesting my recurring nightmare in real life, because no matter how fast I pounded the plastic dome in front of me, the other side was quicker. It wasn’t until almost halfway through that I realized you have to wait for the end of the question — signaled by the light that shines in players’ faces extinguishing — or else your button will be frozen out.

minor technical bugs with the custom-designed iPad control system.

Since our group was largely comprised of attractions employees and observers (like myself) we naturally picked Theme Parks as our first trivia topic, out of categories including Sports, Theater and Science. That’s how we quickly discovered that the Underground’s questions are both cleverly composed and fiendishly difficult, even for self-proclaimed experts in a field. Not all the categories proved quite as challenging, but I frequently found myself having to wait for the multiple choice answers to appear before hazarding a guess.

In between rounds of trivia, members of each team are pitted against each other in a mixed bag of physical challenges, which are less like Survivor and more like middle-school party games. Players may have to try to pass a stack of metal nuts back and forth on a handheld

Once I learned that trick, I was able to help my side eke out a narrow victory, which was ultimately sealed with a surprising lack of fanfare. I was hoping to see a finale bonus round, or a farewell message from the Director (portrayed in videos by local actor Steve Hurst) to pay off the training exercise framing device that supposedly ties this game show into the metaverse connecting the Bureau’s other experiences. Don’t expect to take home a pile of cash or a new car, either; the only prizes you’ll win are souvenir buttons and bragging rights.

To begin, the Underground Game Show is currently featuring its first “season” of questions, with plans to add additional trivia and challenges in the future. The creators seemed receptive to our constructive critiques, so I’m confident they can bring it up to match the high bar set by their escape rooms. And although this experience isn’t quite as intense and immersive as battling Dr. Braingood or hatching Nessie in a bathtub, for some audiences that can actually be a good thing. My spouse enjoyed playing the game show far more than any of the escape rooms I’ve invited her to endure over the years, and I suspect that many others who find the genre anxiety-inducing will feel the same way. With a little more tweaking, this could turn into a terrific alternative to yet another tear-filled family fight over the Monopoly board.

THE ISLE OF BITE

Winter Garden’s Simply Capri rouses with the coastal cuisine of Amalfi and Southern Italy

Nick Valenti has quite the résumé — James Beard Award winner, chairman emeritus at the Culinary Institute of America and former Patina Restaurant Group (now Delaware North) CEO. He’s been responsible for numerous restaurants at Disney, some of which I’m sure he’s truly sorry for and others, including Tutto Italia and Via Napoli in Epcot, that consistently fill the bellies of park-goers. Over at Flamingo Crossings Town Center in Horizons West, Valenti’s latest concept — Simply Capri — anchors the master-planned, mixed-use complex of retail, shopping and dining. Oh, it’s also owned by Disney, which explains the very Disney-like experience we had inside the very Disney-like designed ristorante.

The lovely couple joining me for dinner won the disbenefit of my company by being the highest bidders for the experience in an auction hosted by Shepherd’s Hope, a charity offering free healthcare to the needy and uninsured. Having spiffed myself up for the occasion, I nevertheless felt a bit out of place dressed all in black amid Simply Capri’s vibrant oranges and grotto blues. Over us, lighting fixtures resembling the tall hats of whirling dervishes clung to the exposed white ceiling, while the gorgeously lit counter with the words “Bar Negroni”

written above it practically begged us to order the aperitivo ($12). For a patron dressed in black, a negroni seemed entirely apropos.

“I really like that,” said Neeraj, a cardiologist, after a sip. “Balanced, but a bit light on the Malfy gin,” I countered as his wife, Anjali, an internist, contentedly sipped her Capri Spritz ($12) before forking into a blob of burrata. It was peppered, splashed with olive oil, served with sun-dried tomatoes and precisely the sort of start we had hoped for. The promising prologue was sustained through a plate of perfetto polpo grigliato ($19) — that’s Italian for grilled octopus. A heap of arugula dotted with oven-roasted cherry tomatoes and braced with salmoriglio (it’s a sauce of lemon, olive oil and herbs) was just as voraciously devoured as the ’pus. The pair appeared to be enjoying the food and, more importantly for me, enjoying their time as well.

Veal meatballs ($15), seemingly handled with kid gloves while gently poached in tomato sauce, were as comforting an antipasto as the eggplant parmigiana ($15). “The sauce is wonderful,” cooed Anjali, “but the eggplant is a bit mushy.” She was right, but I tore shreds of focaccia and scooped some of the cheesy sauce nevertheless. “How do you stay so thin and eat

so much?” asked the cardiologist. “I really don’t know,” was my only reply, and I couldn’t help but wonder if I’d be a future patient of his. The internist gave me a look and I saw my medical future flashing before my eyes. Thoughts of CT scans and MRIs were, thankfully, broken by our server. I noticed an oval-shaped pin on his shirt, similar to the ones Disney Cast Members wear. “I’m from Torino,” he declared, pointing to the city’s name printed on his badge. “Most of servers and cooks here are from Italy. The chef tonight, he’s from Salerno. Even that oven comes from Naples.”

Indeed, the hand-built Acunto pizza oven blistering pizzas at 800 degrees Fahrenheit has me excited to try one their pies, and the margherita ($21) looked every bit the classic. Ingredients were quality and the spotting leopard-like, but the crust wasn’t as airy and bubbled as I’d hoped. Either the dough wasn’t allowed to ferment for very long, or perhaps it wasn’t sufficiently rested. Still, not a bad pie, but Piazza Italia in Lake Nona has nothing to worry about.

Of the two house-made noodz on the menu, neither the “very al dente” scialatielli ($31), as our server described it, nor the caccavelle ($28) impressed us very much. The former, with shrimp, clams, mussels and calamari, drew a shrug from Anjali. “That’s OK,” consoled Neeraj. “You can still eat a 7 out of 10.”

The caccavelle didn’t score very high either. We expected large pasta shells but what we got was ravioli. Pasta shape aside, the grainy texture of the ricotta filling was what relegated it to the fringes of our table.

The wine list, however, scored top marks. Our server was even kind enough to pour us a glass of Barolo, which wasn’t on the “wines by the glass” list. It made the grade when paired with bistecca alla Nerano ($39), a specialty from the Amalfi Coast. Slices of skirt steak served on a zucchini sauce and topped with zucchini chips had Neeraj and I polishing it off quicker than Anjali could say “increased risk of heart disease.”

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the respected doctor throwing caution to the wind once dessert arrived: “This tiramisu ($12) might be my favorite dish of the night!” That was before she swooned over the Delizia al limone ($14), a limoncello sponge cake encased in lemon cream. It’s the same cake served at the venerable Pasticceria Sal De Riso in Minori, Italy. The night, naturally, ended with shots of limoncello, a digestivo born on the Italian isle. The conclusion from our post-meal debrief: Like the Faraglioni rock formations of Capri, solid. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

BLUE NOTES

Zoya Zafar finally releases her debut album and, true to form, it’s a new and different look for her musically

Observing the singular artistic progression of Orlando singer-songwriter Zoya Zafar over the last few years — as we have — is a compelling study in harmonious contrasts.

The Pakistan-born and longtime Orlando resident Zafar has been a force to be reckoned with locally for nearly a decade, but since the pandemic years she has come into her own by throwing artistic caution to the wind.

She’s everywhere and in-demand. By the end of this month, Zafar will have played Judson’s Live, Stardust Video, Framework Coffee, Lil Indie’s and an ever-swelling calendar of out-oftown gigs all in the last 12 months.

Zafar is at ease playing alongside artists as diverse as Wave Temples, John Dorney, Sweat FM, Future Bartenderz, Jonas Van den Bossche, Fast Preacher and Ash’s Shadow. For her it just makes sense. “In the Orlando music scene, it’s very easy to cross genres and be exposed to wildly different sounds,” says Zafar. “It’s no fun being in just one circle, one genre.”

Zafar has also been switching things up live, embracing synthesizers, loops and trying her hand at instrumental ambient sets; it’s a leap of

faith for an artist known best for torchy, indie-folk songs to de-center her own voice.

“You can’t be afraid to experiment. Vocals don’t always have to be the focus,” explains Zafar. “When I was going through my own grieving [Editor’s note: More on that below], it was almost like words didn’t feel true, and sounds were the only thing that made sense.”

Most importantly of all, Zafar is at last unveiling her debut album, Some Songs, at the end of the week. These Songs — well-known to those who follow Zafar as heartbreak hymnals and breathless acoustic laments — have been radically reinterpreted into lush electro-pop.

The album is a departure if you’ve seen Zafar live over the years, but the album is a strong argument against creative complacency — brimming with the joy of exploration. “The songs are fresh for me now, too, in the production and sounds,” says Zafar. “This album is as much for me as it is for other people. Working with different producers got me excited about these songs, ones that I’ve grown with and lived with for so long, again.”

Some Songs began life during a series of off-the-cuff recordings at the Chicago home of Jagjaguwar artist and longtime friend Gia

Margaret. Work began in earnest, though, during the pandemic lockdown, in remote recording sessions with Nashville resident and Florida native Max Helgemo.

Helgemo and Zafar sent demos back and forth, and though collaborating at a remove had its disadvantages, the results were a drastically overhauled take on Zafar’s familiar works. A new sound came as a culmination of years of hard work and careful honing from Zafar.

“These songs are snapshots of my life,” says Zafar,“I work out songs in my head before I write anything down — humming melodies, working out lyrics. If I remember how to play these parts, then I write it down.”

The contrast between the buoyant electronic-indie the duo were creating and the circumstances in Zafar’s life at the time couldn’t have been more stark. (Beyond most of the album being recorded during a global pandemic.) Weakened by an auto-immune disease, Zafar was ill and barely able to walk, isolated except for visits to doctors. It gave her some measure of solace, bringing her music to new and vivid life amongst trying times.

Despite those obstacles and simultaneously

dealing with personal loss and grief, Zafar would rally to record the shiver-inducing vocal takes of Some Songs.

The album has been wrapped since last year, but Zafar has been taking her time, releasing a string of singles, including the ambient-pop gem “Wordz.” It was closely followed by “You Meant Nothing, Too,” an ethereal piano and organ swoon that coalesces into sprightly folktronica.

“Ideally I’d like people to listen to the album in one sitting,” says Zafar of the chain of singles. “But I just wanted to try something different, test things out.”

Most recently, there was the dreamy, Lynchian blue-drenched music video for “Sweet Talk,” a Mazzy Star-meets-drum machine head-nodder.

Some Songs is at last out on Friday, on cassette through newer European imprint Start-Track, and on CD and streaming services courtesy of Zafar herself. The cassette is ocean blue, appropriate for the music contained on the spools of tape. “It feels good to be part of a new thing in another country,” says Zafar of the faraway imprint.

Momentum is undeniable. There are a lot of shows upcoming — with Odie Leigh at Tuffy’s in Sanford on Wednesday, May 1; Judson’s Live with Claire Vandiver on Thursday, May 9; and then a string of out-of-towners in St. Augustine, Tallahassee, Mexico City and San Francisco. Likely more will be added.

“A huge part of all this is just trying new things to keep me excited. Because you know, what else is going to bring me joy?” Zafar laughs knowingly. She’s joking. We promise.

LOCAL RELEASES

If you don’t frequent any of our area’s many Mexican bodegas or taco joints then, first, something is wrong with you. But, second, you might not know that Orlando band Los Jarritos take their name from a Mexican soft drink in homage to their origin as the surviving members of Bobby Clock & the Soda Pops.

Los Jarritos, the band, are the duo of Orlando outsider icon Ray Brazen and drummer Cesar Marquez. In their first couple of years, they’ve primarily only dropped a handful of fast-anddirty singles on Soundcloud. But recently, Los Jarritos made their most formal release to date with new album Lifers. Besides their most extensive collection, it’s also their most crafted. That, of course, is all relative when it comes to Brazen.

“As usual I recorded us live and direct lo-fi, so this is crude as hell,” he says. “But it’s all as it sounds at Cesar’s palace where this music was created, and as always this is part of the plan, a recording directly influenced by its surroundings and all those wonderful Saturday afternoons leading up to this finished product.”

The eight-song Lifers provides the most comprehensive portrait of Los Jarritos so far. It’s a shaggy romp of garage, punk and power pop. There are even nice little jaunts into surf (“Chili Candy”) and jangle pop (“Take Me Back to June”). Mostly though, these songs are economical rockers that are all slash and bash. With a direct attack but an offbeat sensibility, they’re little bottle rockets of personality whose wild sparks fly free.

Lyrically, Lifers packs themes personal to the band, including nods to their local milieu, their love of Mexican band Los Dug Dug’s (“Eclipse” is a Dug Dug’s cover) and Brazen’s colorful experiences in underground culture (“Lifers”). And

Orlando duo Los Jarritos’ debut album

Lifers is a shaggy romp of garage, punk and power pop. With a direct attack but an o beat sensibility, these songs are little bottle rockets of personality whose wild sparks fly free

with the lyric “We are lifers, we will never change, it doesn’t matter if you think we’re strange,” the title track nutshells the essence of both Los Jarritos and Brazen himself.

As Los Jarritos solidify with trusted wingman Marquez by his side, the picture that’s emerging is one of Ray Brazen in his most inspired form in many years. Lifers is available only on Bandcamp, which is still pretty official for a DIY-or-die guy like Brazen.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Blueprint, DJ Detox, Mugs & Pockets, DNA: After increasing his profile both nationally and in Orlando with years of strong work and touring, indie-rap MC-producer Blueprint seemingly went MIA. Now on his first tour in six years, the accomplished Ohio player and RJD2 collaborator is finally emerging from pandemic-induced

doldrums that involved financial and interpersonal ruin. With the fresh release of Falling Down, his first collection since 2018, Blueprint is returning with great new music that’s probably his most candid look ever. Of particularly local note, the bill also features Mugs & Pockets, the Seattle hip-hop duo that includes Orlando legend Swamburger. Go welcome them all back. (8 p.m. Thursday, May 2, Iron Cow, $15)

Waxahatchee, Good Morning:

Considering the quick status she earned as an indie-rock queen upon emerging as Waxahatchee in the 2010s, Katie Crutchfield’s turn toward Americana in the 2020s has been surprisingly convincing and natural. Waxahatchee’s excellent new album, 2024’s Tigers Blood, proves that this direction isn’t just a passing fancy. Crutchfield is steering this roots revelation in a way that’s not just by-the-numbers traditionalism but rather an expressive evolution that’s still utterly her own. Polyvinyl band Good Morning opens. (6 p.m. Saturday, May 4, The Beacham, $30-$50)

High on Fire, Zeta, High Command:

Oakland metal lords High on Fire 1) are celebrating 25 years as a band, 2) have just dropped their first new album in five years and 3) are about to launch their tour right here in Orlando. It’s a perfect storm and we’re ground zero. What’s more, the legendary stoner act’s lineup is now reloaded with Coady Willis (Big Business, Murder City Devils, Melvins), one of the fiercest drummers in heavy music. Flanking them will be Massachusetts thrashers High Command and Florida’s own Latin punks Zeta. Kiss your ass goodbye now. (6 p.m. Saturday, May 4, Conduit, $25) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

Alvvays

Canadian shoegaze marauders Alvvays mix the thick, billowing crimson atmospherics of Loveless (that guitar scree underlying everything!) with an unabashed knack for heartbroken indie-pop hooks. There’s something for everyone in latest album Blue Rev, whether you’re a pop girlie scrawling lyrics from these songs on the walls (using “girlie” in the gender-nonspecific sense, you dig?) or a gear girlie staring at webs of e ects pedals. Alvvays — vocalist-guitarist Molly Rankin, keyboardist Kerri MacLellan, guitarist Alec O’Hanley, drummer Sheridan Riley and bassist Abbey Blackwell — are on the road behind the aforementioned Blue Rev, from which the tune “Belinda Says” earned them a Best

Alternative Performance Grammy nom. This is one of only two Florida shows so you’d best get blurred-out while the getting’s good. Horse Jumper of Love (a favorite amongst discerning locals) opens the night. 8 p.m., The Plaza Live, 425 N. Bumby Ave., plazaliveorlando.org, $20-$45. —

FRIDAY, MAY 3

David Spade

David Spade, a living and breathing bemused smirk if there ever was one (no shade!), is heading to Steinmetz Hall this week. All the better to hear his eyebrow arch in an acoustically perfect environment. Spade came to fame as part of Saturday Night Live in the 1990s,

with his prescient skewering of celebrity that was the “Hollywood Minute” segment on Weekend Update. Since then, he’s found a whole other level of stardom in film with Joe Dirt and Tommy Boy, and in sitcoms like Just Shoot Me — which we recommend you revisit on Roku. (It holds up mostly due to Spade’s relentless mugging as a manchild courtier working at a fashion magazine.) Currently you can see Spade on the Fox game show Snake Oil, or hear him on the podcast “Fly on the Wall,” alongside fellow SNL vet Dana Carvey. But all through this lengthy career, Spade has been doing stand-up during rare lull periods, and this week he brings his “Catch Me Inside” tour to the City Beautiful. 8 p.m., Steinmetz Hall, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter. org, $45-$135. — MM

Orlando Sings Choral Festival: The Road West

Local choral group Orlando Sings, under the artistic direction of Dr. Andrew Minear, doesn’t shy away from thought-provoking material. Composer Reena Esmail grew up in Los Angeles and is currently based there; she has said she “yearned for a way to process the rising panic” while witnessing the worsening California drought; her “Malhaar: A Requiem for Water” is the result. If a requiem is a mass for the dead, then titling a composition “A Requiem for Water” is a bit of a gut-punch, but in Hindustani music, a malhaar is a group of ragas calling for rain. This concert weaves together Esmail’s malhaar/requiem with Gabriel Fauré’s gorgeous “Requiem, Op. 48” to create an opportunity for transcendence — exquisite sound, complicated truth. 8 p.m., First United Methodist Church Orlando, 142 E. Jackson St., 407-849-6080, orlandosings.org, $39.50$69.50. — Jessica Bryce Young

SATURDAY, MAY 4

Spanish Love Songs

You know that feeling when you love so hard, you dread the inevitable end? From heartbreak, destruction or death, you realize the moment is fleeting. That’s the feeling Spanish Love Songs’ latest release, No Joy, sounds like. Tragic, but full-hearted and goddamn determined to hold on tight — it is, ironically, a joyful album — sonically still true to the dark melodic Spanish Love Songs style, but with a twist. There’s a new wave energy to their latest album, a step forward from the band’s 2020 pandemic anthem, Brave Faces Everyone, which found a home in the hearts of millennial punks around the world. The Los Angeles-based band — lead vocalist and guitarist Dylan Slocum, guitarist Kyle McAulay, drummer Ruben Duarte, bassist Trevor Dietrich, and keyboardist Meredith Van Woert — are bringing their love songs to Orlando on Saturday, along with a stacked lineup featuring New York’s Oso Oso, Chicago’s Worry Club, and Arizona’s Sydney Sprague. 6 p.m., The Abbey, 100 S. Eola Drive, abbeyorlando.com, $24. — Ida V. Eskamani

Kurt Vile and the Violators

Singer-songwriter, alt-rocker and Rolling Stone magazine’s 215th greatest guitarist of all time, Kurt Vile is heading to Orlando with a new EP in tow. Vile and his backing band The Violators play the Beacham on Tuesday. The only other Florida shows are in St. Pete and Jacksonville later that week, so hands o , we get him first! Vile’s latest mini-album Back to Moon Beach follows along with his not-so-succinct style, clocking in at just under an hour runtime. It joins Vile’s discography filled with alternative rock, synth-pop and callbacks to folk greats (including even Mitch Miller’s “Must Be Santa” — popularized by Bob Dylan as a goof, or not — on the new record). 7 p.m., The Beacham, 46 N. Orange Ave., $30-$45.

Ronnie Stone

Despite a name that brings to mind a particularly ill-humored Studio 54 fill-in doorman, NYC-based (duh) Ronnie Stone is better suited to soundtracking a glittering and glistening dancefloor than gatekeeping it. Stone crafts immaculately filthy champagne synth-pop that calls to mind Suicide’s second album, “Send Me an Angel,” Buddy Crime, the Cruising soundtrack and Soft Cell at their most perverse. Stone is currently out on the road touring behind crystalline new album Ride Again, full of songs perfect for sunglasses at night and endless clubbing at the end of the world. We dug his previous e orts in Ronnie Stone & The Lonely Riders, but this record seems like his “Tainted Love” breakthrough is imminent. Don’t sleep on this one. Opening the night are excellent locals Alien Observer and KT Kink. 7 p.m., Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, $12.
