» Pulse survivors, victims’ families asked state attorney to investigate former club owners and the city
After the Orlando Police Department closed an investigation into the Pulse nightclub’s former owners last year, a group of Pulse shooting survivors and families have formally asked the local state attorney’s office to investigate them and the city of Orlando, which the group believes engaged in “deliberate conspiring, colluding, and covering up” of unpermitted structures and code violations in the club that make it harder for victims to escape. Earlier this month, families and survivors had the opportunity to go inside the former club, located in SoDo, for the first time in nine years. The June 12, 2016, shooting left 49 people dead, most of whom were young, LGBTQ+ and Latino. An Orlando Weekly reporter also had the chance to tour the club last week, which has had its entrances blocked to the public. Although the space has been cleaned of carnage and the furniture cleared, we still spotted bullet holes in the walls and floors. Flyers for upcoming drag shows still hung on the dark walls. It was musty, dark, and claustrophobic with few windows. A hole in the back of the club from when the SWAT team broke in that fateful night was still visible but covered up.
» Orlando Rep. Maxwell Frost introduced legislation to make ICE more accountable
Central Florida Democratic U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost on Wednesday introduced federal legislation that would strengthen public accountability of all Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, including local jails contracting with ICE. Frost argued that ICE agents are abusing the rule of law, skirting due process and targeting nonviolent working people. His bill — called the Stop Unlawful Detention and End Mistreatment Act — would require all ICE-operated and affiliated facilities to publicly list all individuals who are being detained, where they’re being detained, when they were detained and why. The legislation would also require ICE facilities to provide information regarding the age, nationality and legal status of those detained, as well as data on any use of force when they were being detained, and whether they were transferred to another facility or deported out of the country. It’s important to note that introducing legislation doesn’t guarantee it will pass. It’s unclear at this point whether there’s a path forward for Frost’s bill, but it signals where he’s at in all of this.
» EDC event producers were cited by the U.S. Department of Labor after death of stagehand on the job
The employer of a stagehand who died while working on setup for the Electric Daisy Carnival at Camping World Stadium in Orlando last October has agreed to pay a nearly $20,000 penalty to the U.S. Department of Labor to settle alleged violations of workplace safety law that contributed to the worker’s death. According to a news release from the federal labor department, James Thomas Productions has agreed to pay a penalty following an investigation into the stagehand’s death last October. Meanwhile, events company Stage FX — which also allegedly violated workplace safety law in connection with the incident — has contested a citation from the feds. According to a copy of the citation, obtained by Orlando Weekly, Stage FX is facing $31,445 in total penalties for two violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act that the DOL has classified as “serious.” The worker hasn’t been identified publicly by either the feds or the EDC producers but industry folks online identified him as Misael Aguirre.
» Florida lawmakers finally approved $115.1 billion budget after session marked by conflict
One of the more contentious legislative sessions in recent history came to a close late last Monday (more than six weeks after the session was supposed to end) as lawmakers approved a $115.1 billion budget for next fiscal year and prepared to send it to Gov. Ron DeSantis. The Senate unanimously passed the spending plan (SB 2500), while the House approved it in a 103-2 vote. Dissenting votes came from Rep. Angie Nixon, D-Jacksonville, and Rep. Dotie Joseph, D-North Miami. While Orlando Rep. Anna Eskamani voted for the budget, she admitted it represented “a lot of missed opportunities.” The budget, which will take effect with the July 1 start of the 2025-2026 fiscal year, remains subject to veto by DeSantis. The budget includes moves ranging from paying down state debt to giving most employees pay raises. Lawmakers also approved a $1.3 billion package of tax
cuts, dominated by the elimination of a commercial-lease tax that has long been a target of business lobbyists. Lawmakers did not pass DeSantis’ property tax rebates or reduce the overall sales tax rate. But Senate President Ben Albritton, R-Wauchula, and House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, said cutting property taxes remains a goal that lawmakers will revisit during the 2026 session.
» Florida officials opened door for state colleges to increase out-of-state tuition by up to 15 percent Florida’s public universities last week were given the OK to increase tuition on out-of-state students. Out-of-state tuition has not been changed at any public institution in Florida since 2012. The State University System Board of Governors handed authority to university trustees to increase out-ofstate tuition by up to 15 percent, if they so choose. The policy passed has two phases, permitting an increase of out-of-state tuition up to 10 percent for students enrolled in fall 2025 and up to 15 percent for students enrolled in 2026. Florida out-of-state tuition is the third lowest in the country at $21,690. The average nationwide is $30,780. If every institution increased out-of-state tuition by 15 percent, the board estimates revenue could increase by $105 million. The opportunity to raise tuition was approved unanimously. The board voted, too, to require institutions to maintain the same ratio of in-state and out-of-state students as they had enrolled in fall of 2024. In-state tuition has not been raised since 2013.

DELIVER US FROM HARM
The Florida Harm Reduction Collective has mailed thousands of overdose prevention kits to Floridians since 2023. Now the state has cut their funding without explanation
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
Three years ago, drug overdose deaths involving opioids like fentanyl — a powerful painkiller — were on the rise, here in Florida and nationwide. In 2021, more than 8,000 people died of fatal drug overdose in Florida alone, with 80 percent of those deaths involving some kind of opioid.
In response, the state began rolling out a new program to provide opioid overdose prevention kits to the public, expanding on a previous initiative focused on supplying them to Florida’s first responders.
Each overdose prevention kit contains two doses of naloxone, a non-addictive drug that can reverse an opioid overdose. The kits also contain information about addiction treatment options, overdose prevention and places to find naloxone in your community.
A year after that program’s rollout, the Florida Department of Children and Families expanded naloxone distribution efforts by contracting with the nonprofit Florida Harm Reduction Collective to deliver free naloxone to Floridians through a mail-delivery program.
This option of mail delivery allows for more anonymity — and makes it more accessible for those in rural communities, for instance, who don’t live close to a county health department or another one of the state’s more than 400 free naloxone pickup providers.
According to DCF, the mail delivery option served to “deliver this lifesaving medication to the doorsteps of Florida’s hardest-to-reach populations, along with localized educational materials and referral resources for overdose and infectious disease prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery support services.”
The program’s budget allowed for the FHRC to mail at least 500 overdose kits to Floridians’ homes each month, according to state documents. A September brief from the national Opioid Response Network, highlighting Florida’s efforts to curb overdose deaths, notes that more than 9,000 naloxone kits had been mailed to Floridians since the program’s inception in early 2023, resulting in at least 109 instances of overdose reversals (or, in other words, 109 lives saved).
Staff with the FHRC, however, told Orlando Weekly in a recent interview that as of last fall, DCF abruptly terminated their funding for the program — opting not to renew it for the following year.
Tim Santamour, interim executive director of the FHRC, said they weren’t given an explanation. They can only guess at why their contract wasn’t renewed.
“There’s certainly been a little bit of hostility on the state level towards harm reduction as a concept,” Santamour told Orlando Weekly, noting that, of course, harm reduction is literally in the nonprofit’s name.
“We also tend to advocate for other marginalized communities, whether they’re trans communities or, you know, even talking about people who use drugs and the services they deserve that can easily run afoul of conservative politicians and lawmakers.”
DCF, which recently went after a reporter publicly for asking questions, did not respond to multiple attempts by Orlando Weekly to get an explanation for funding loss.
A state-run vendor portal online confirms that DCF hasn’t paid the FHRC for its services since late October.
What’s lost
The nonprofit’s state-funded mail naloxone program, the only one of its kind in Florida, had received about $250,000 in state funding annually since 2023, allowing the group to mail anywhere from 400 to more than 2,000 overdose kits to people’s homes each month.
Naloxone, also known by the brand name Narcan, can quite literally save lives. As an opioid antagonist, the medication can block the deadly effects of an opioid overdose by binding to opioid receptors in the brain.
addition to postage costs, the naloxone, and other operational costs.
Prior to the state contract, the FHRC had already been mailing out naloxone to Floridians in partnership with NEXTDistro, a New Yorkbased harm reduction group. According to DCF documents, this prior experience is one of the reasons the nonprofit was chosen for the state contract. “[T]he Florida Harm Reduction Collective (FLHRC) is the only Florida-based non-profit with experience operating a mailbased naloxone distribution service,” the state agency noted in its proposal for the program.
“FLHRC’s Board of Directors includes a diverse representation of people with lived experience in substance use and professionals working at harm reduction and recovery programs across the state,” the proposal continues. “The Board is majority women; 40% people of color; 40% LGBTQ; and includes people with lived experience related to homelessness and incarceration.”
Working with those who have lived experience in these matters is generally considered a plus. They know how to reach and connect with vulnerable populations in a way that others can’t. And in this case, it’s life or death.
“There’s certainly been a little bit of hostility on the state level towards harm reduction as a concept.”
According to a budget breakdown from DCF, the funding for the mail delivery program had helped pay for the salary and benefits of two staff members to administer the program, in
stigma and limited opportunities,” Hall shared in an interview in September. “Then, with the lack of social support, if somebody is not housed, if they don’t have friends, they don’t have social support of others, it’s a lot easier to relapse.”
The county, along with several others in Florida now, has been working to address the issue through jail-based treatment programs that offer medication-assisted treatment, the gold standard treatment for opioid addiction. Medication for opioid use disorder, such as methadone and buprenorphine, can help curb cravings for opioids, and can cut the risk of overdose in half.
“Of the people who died from an overdose in 2023 and were released from jail within the prior 365 days, none of them were involved with our MAT Treatment program,” Dr. Raul Pino, director of Orange County Health Services, said in a recent statement.
Overdose deaths in Orange County (mostly tied to opioids) declined an estimated 30 percent in 2024, a feat attributed in part to efforts to get naloxone into the hands of more people. Dr. Hall, who’s leading the county’s efforts to address the overdose crisis, told Orlando Weekly in March that more than 25,000 naloxone kits were distributed throughout the county from last October through December alone.
“There’s a whole lot of people working on this,” he said. The naloxone kits that Orange County has distributed — in partnership with nonprofits like Largest Heart and Project Opioid — were paid for with funds the county received through national legal settlements with opioid manufacturers, distributed by the state.
The Florida Harm Reduction Collective’s mail delivery program — a statewide initiative — was specifically funded through Florida’s State Opioid Response Project.
People with a history of drug use who have been incarcerated, for instance, are at a much higher risk of fatal overdose compared to the general population. This is particularly true in the early days following release, since a person’s ability to tolerate their former drug of choice has likely declined.
Dr. Thomas Hall, director of Orange County’s DrugFree Community Coalition, previously Orlando Weekly last year that one in five
of those who die of fatal overdose in Orange County is someone with addiction who was recently released from the jail system.
“I think it goes to the low support and the
That project, administered by DCF, is funded by a federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that is facing potential budget cuts under the Trump administration. DCF has for several years now received about $50 million for overdose prevention efforts through that SAMHSA grant annually.
According to recent transaction history, DCF reported as recently as May that their federal grant money from SAMHSA is being used in part to support the FHRC’s mail naloxone program — even though that’s not actually the case.
DCF did not respond to a request for an explanation of this discrepancy.
Still a problem
Overdose deaths involving opioids in the U.S. have been on the decline in most parts of the county over the last year, from roughly 110,000 reported overdose deaths in 2023 to about 87,000 during the one-year period that ended September 2024. Florida has seen a decrease in
[continued on page 13]
[continued from page 11]
drug-related deaths, too, but Santamour said this decline isn’t reflected in all communities.
“Deaths are down,” he admitted, “But they’re down disproportionately across communities, especially the Black and brown communities.” That disproportionate impact, he said, has a lot to do with a number of factors around health care disparities, access and stigma around substance use.
“That’s why it’s important to continue to have an anonymous, mail-based [naloxone] program,” he argued.
Naloxone was made available for over-thecounter purchase for the first time in 2023, under the Biden administration. Through the DCF-run ISaveFL initiative, the medication is also available for free pickup through more than 400 county health departments and community organizations across Florida, including the LGBT+ Center of Orlando and Recovery Connections of Central Florida.
According to state budget documents, Florida lawmakers have also allocated $250,000 from the state’ share of national opioid settlement funds this next fiscal year to supply naloxone in every residence hall owned or operated by a Florida public college or university. Lawmakers have also earmarked funds for programs to address behavioral health workforce shortages, expand access to “high-quality treatment” for substance use disorder and expand peer support recovery services.
The fate of the state’s naloxone mail delivery program, however, is unclear.
What’s next?
Santamour told Orlando Weekly that although they’re no longer receiving state funds for their mail naloxone program, the program’s not going anywhere — at least not for now.
“Demand for our kits has stayed steady for the three years we’ve run the program. The demand is not going away,” he said. “Folks still see themselves and still see their family members at risk for overdose.”
Naloxone isn’t just for those who are addicted to opioids. Fatal overdose can (and does) also occur by accident, when and if someone takes a drug they believe to be something else that actually contains a potent opioid like fentanyl. Cocaine, meth and fake prescription pills are just a few examples.
Naloxone, when given to a person quickly in the event of an overdose, can save a person’s life. Its accessibility is paramount. For now, Santamour said the nonprofit has been paying for the cost of postage — upward of $2,000 per month since October — to continue the program themselves. They’re currently in the process of searching for alternative funding sources to keep it going. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

Hilton hotel workers in Orlando score wage increases, job protections in new union contract
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
After roughly a full year of contract talks and several rallies to publicize workers’ demands, hundreds of employees at Hilton’s Buena Vista Palace hotel have approved a new union contract that will deliver increased job protections as well as immediate pay raises.
UNITE HERE Local 737, a hospitality union representing 19,000 service and hospitality workers in Central Florida, announced the news of the new contract on social media Thursday. The union represents over 300 housekeepers, bartenders, pool attendants, food service workers, and other employees of Hilton Buena Vista Palace near Disney Springs and the Hiltonowned DoubleTree Universal near the Universal Orlando resort.
The hotel workers’ most recent four-year union contract expired Dec. 31, 2024. Hilton and the union, however, failed to reach agreement on key items of negotiation ahead of its expiration, including pay rates, retirement benefits and healthcare costs.
Workers spoke out about how Hilton’s pay rates, for instance, paled in comparison to those at Disney-owned hotels, where workers are also unionized with UNITE HERE. Housekeepers at Hilton Buena Vista Palace, for instance, were earning $16 an hour under their old union contract, compared to $22 an hour at unionized Disney World resort hotels.
according to the union. The hospitality industry is one of the largest employers of immigrant workers in the U.S., alongside employers in agriculture and construction.
Many immigrant workers laboring in Central Florida’s tourism industry are Temporary Protected Status holders from countries like Haiti who are now facing deportation threats from the Trump administration. The 32BJ SEIU, another labor union that represents Haitian TPS holders, has joined a lawsuit filed against the administration over its decision to strip TPS status from more than 200,000 Haitian immigrants.
TPS is a temporary immigration status program extended to individuals from foreign countries that are suffering from an ongoing armed conflict, environmental disaster, or “other extraordinary and temporary conditions.” Those with TPS are given work permits and are temporarily protected from deportation.
“I filed this lawsuit not just for myself and my wife, but for hundreds of thousands of my fellow Haitians here on TPS whose lives would be upended,” said Gerald Michaud, a TPS holder, union member and plaintiff in the lawsuit. Michaud received TPS status in 2010 after a devastating earthquake in his home country.
Although an exemption for deportation efforts of certain TPS and undocumented workers was recently floated for the hotel, restaurant and agricultural industries, the Trump administration quickly abandoned the idea, with federal officials split on it.
“The pay for right now is very low compared to what’s comparable to the other restaurants, or just the quick service that’s around in this area,” Amanda Garcia, a food service worker at the hotel, previously told Orlando Weekly.“We’re like, almost $5 off compared to other hotels, even another Hilton across the street,” she said.
According to Local 737, workers under the new union contract will receive “huge” wage increases, lower medical costs under their insurance plan, a new dental plan mostly paid for by the employer for the first time, a lower workload for housekeepers (who face greater risks of overwork and injury with higher mandated workloads) and 20% automatic gratuities on all guest checks for servers and bartenders at the hotel’s Shades and Sunnies dining options.
Minimum wage rates for housekeepers will rise from $16 an hour to $21 an hour immediately, a union rep confirmed, and reach $24 an hour by June 2028. The lowest-pay job classifications at the hotel, meanwhile, will see an immediate pay increase from $14.50 an hour to $17 an hour, and a minimum wage of $20 in June 2028. Some workers will see a $10-per-hour increase to their pay over that same time, the union rep noted. The contract was approved by union members with 97% approval from those who voted.
Even more timely are increased job protections in the new contract for immigrant workers,
The new contract at Hilton Buena Vista Palace includes language that will ensure that no immigrant worker will lose their job without the opportunity to resolve paperwork issues, attend immigration proceedings and appeal their status. It also allows that, if an employee leaves their job due to a loss of work authorization, they can return to work at the hotel if they regain proof of work authorization within two years. Union members will receive a paid day off for swearing in as a U.S. citizen under the contract. Other guarantees include unpaid days off for immigration proceedings, the right to language assistance in grievance meetings and the right to speak their chosen language in conversation with each other.
Local hotel workers began contract talks with Hilton last year with goals to raise minimum wage standards, reduce housekeepers’ workload, fight for a good pension plan that allows older workers to retire with dignity, secure more affordable health insurance coverage and end what they describe as an exploitative ploy to replace fulltime union jobs with non-union temp jobs.
Workers previously said this had become more common since the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving in-house staff to train the endless cycles of co-workers who came in (without additional pay, no less). According to Local 737, the new union contract at Hilton Buena Vista Palace includes some protections against this, too, ensuring more union-covered jobs and fewer temp jobs to replace them.

RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME
West Orlando comedian Kam Patterson
joins cast of new Kevin Hart film 72 Hours
BY SARAH KINBAR
West Orlando comedian Kam Patterson, who in 2023 earned a regular slot on the popular comedy podcast “Kill Tony,” has been tapped for a role in the forthcoming Netflix film 72 Hours, a Kevin Hart vehicle directed by Tim Story, known for his work on Barbershop, Think Like a Man and Ride Along
The bachelor party-themed comedy follows a 40-year-old executive, played by Hart, who hopes to revive his struggling career by joining a group of 20-somethings on a wild three-day bender after he’s inadvertently added to their group text.
The 26-year-old Patterson’s work on the film has taken him away from the comedy stage, and he won’t even be able to perform at the Jacksonville and Orlando “Killers of Kill Tony” tour stops in July, as previously planned, his father Kenneth Patterson tells Orlando Weekly.
“Recently, Kam opened for Adam Ray, and when they called out Kam’s name, the crowd roared,” says the elder Patterson. “Adam said, ‘Did you hear that? It’s not that he’s on his way to making it. He’s already there.’ I’m just so proud of him for what he’s put into this.”
grandmother’s 70th birthday party in Gainesville, riffing about her habit of going to arcades and leaving him with her dog, Jazzy. Even at that tender age, Patterson had already developed a skill for bringing the laughs. He delivered informal performances in second grade at Orlo Vista Elementary, where his teacher would allow him to tell jokes to the class if Patterson finished his schoolwork.
When in his early 20s, Patterson was at loose ends about his future, at one point considering becoming a firefighter. His path forward crystallized as he spent more time on the mic.
“I felt sick if I missed a single day at an open mic,” he says.“Even though sometimes open mics can be horrible, that’s where you learn to carry a crowd and test new material.”
Patterson worked rooms with a tight group of up-and-coming comedians, including Jonte “Taetattedup” Vaughn, Derriel “Shopwitchaboy” Lewis and “King Quelz” Sumter, among others. Their sets surged with raw energy and an instinct to push boundaries.
“It was the dawning of all our careers,” says Sumter.“We were fresh out of COVID, literally just a bunch of hungry, highly motivated comedians standing on dreams and ambition.”
Vaughn notes that at the time, the group didn’t have a specific destination in mind.
“We just knew we wanted to be famous. We were learning how to structure our jokes, trying to figure out what was funny and what wasn’t funny, and being ourselves,” she says.
The younger Patterson got his start in 2021 in Orlando’s open mic scene, performing frequently at Wil “Dirtbag” Miller’s mic at Night Shade Lounge in Parramore, Vince Taylor’s Comedy & Karaoke at The Dreams Lounge in Casselberry, and other local comedy venues. Patterson rarely missed a night to work on his craft.
“I have a one-track mind about comedy,” he tells OW. “At one point I had a job at Foot Locker, and I was always telling my co-workers stories. They were like, ‘Man, you funny as hell. You should be a comedian.’ They’re the ones who really got me thinking I could do it.”
Patterson recalls telling his parents years ago he planned on forging a career in comedy.
“My dad told me, ‘Well, if you gonna do it, you gotta do all you can and keep going and don’t stop.’
And then he texted me a picture of all the great comedians together in a barbershop,”says Patterson.“‘You gotta strive to be in this picture,’ he told me.”
The digital artwork by artist Ma’alik Wright is titled The Comedy Shop and features Bernie Mac, Dave Chappelle, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy and, in a bit of foreshadowing, Kevin Hart. Patterson’s comedic gifts were apparent long before that day.
When he was about 10, he did a little set at his
“As a vet watching these kids in the game with so much talent and life ahead of them, it was an amazing time,” says Roberto “Mini” Font, one of Central Florida’s respected comedy fixtures and 2022 winner of the venerable March Madness Comedy Competition. “It was refreshing that they didn’t even know how good they were, yet they were one of the best rookie comedy classes Orlando ever had.”
By 2022, Patterson knew he had to broaden his horizons. He met an opener for comedian Jason Banks, which led to an invitation to open for Banks. Eventually, Patterson moved to Austin, where he quickly escalated his visibility, and bigger opportunities started coming.
He performed on a live episode of “Kill Tony” at Madison Square Garden in August 2024 and has toured the U.S. over the past couple of years, hitting every major city and many of the smaller towns in between.
Patterson’s role in 72 Hours hasn’t been publicly revealed by Netflix or the production team. Casting announcements only confirm that he’s part of the all-star ensemble, alongside Hart, Teyana Taylor, Marcello Hernández, Mason Gooding, Zach Cherry and Ben Marshall. Angela Bassett is also rumored to be in talks to join the cast.
The script was written by Matt Mider, Kevin Burrows, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. Ross Fanger serves as an executive producer, with Davis Entertainment, Counterbalance, HartBeat, and Will Packer also producing the film in partnership with Sony Pictures.
Stay tuned for big things.

GAUL IN THE FAMILY
Garni Café is the latest addition to the Wave Hotel’s restaurant roster
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Amid the highly programmatic and tech-forward landscape of Lake Nona stands the Wave Hotel, a curvaceous glass-and-steel representation of an electromagnetic wave. What pulsates throughout the building’s space, of course, is energy — energy of the corporate kind. After all, Tavistock, the private investment firm run by billionaire (and convicted insider trader) Joe Lewis, is the hotel’s, and Lake Nona’s, creator. Aside from the pretty penny spent on the property’s art, sculptures and all-around whizbangery are its restaurants —Bacán with its South American-ish fare, Nami and its contempo-Japanese cuisine, and Garni Café, a decidedly French restaurant overseen by the hotel’s executive chef, Guillaume Robin.
The Brittany-born chef was bestowed with the title of Maîtres Cuisiniers de France (Master Chef of France) earlier this year for his dedication to “upholding the excellence, creativity, and heritage of French gastronomy.” Sampling his
escargots ($19) baked in garlic and parsley butter and capped with wee little puff pastries had us reminiscing about relishing Thomas Keller’s snails at Bouchon Bistro.
The setting here, of course, is markedly different. In fact, for a French restaurant, the breezy, second-floor space awash in vibrant colors and botanical shrubbery is more Martinique than Montparnasse. I was quite struck by the views, but more so by the giant gruyère popover ($9) that looked like a geoduck plucked straight out of the beachy depths. The eggy and airy cheese bread was served with a lemon-thyme butter, but I wanted to save some of the bread to sop up the liquid in the bouillabaisse ($38) I ordered. Alas, its saffron-tomato “broth” was hardly in a liquid state. The slab of mahi was generous enough, but for the price, I expected more than just two mussels and two wee shrimp in that bowl. By comparison, the bouillabaisse at Chez Les Copains is far superior — and $2 cheaper.
GARNI CAFÉ

The charred octopus à la niçoise ($24) looked like a proper catch, served over black rice with blobs of goat cheese and garlic croutons, but wow, was it salty. Inedibly so. A brining mishap, possibly. Our server was nice enough to take it off the bill.
What I can wholly endorse, however, is the steak tartare ($24), adeptly prepared tableside with USDA Prime beef, mustard, capers and parsley. I also appreciated the use of preserved lemon in the gnocchi Parisienne ($22) to help cut through the richness, but the Parmesan cream sauce just loaded the dish with a weightiness that negated any semblance of comfort.
Not so with the profiteroles ($14): Delicate choux pastry filled with Norohy vanilla bean ice cream and drizzled with warm chocolate sauce is an ending that will please crude vacationers and hardened snoots alike. Let’s be real — Garni Café isn’t trying to be Orlando’s version of Balthazar, Frenchette or Bouchon. This is a hotel serving French fare as seen through the very corporate eyes of Tavistock. But that doesn’t mean Garni isn’t worth a look. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Shark Whisperer — Explore the controversy that surrounds conservationist Ocean Ramsey, who has been both hailed as a visionary and dismissed as a showboater for eschewing traditional safety methods to get up close and personal with sharks. Marry My Husband — Japan offers its own version of the Korean series about a woman who goes back in time to get preemptive revenge on her unfaithful spouse, only to fall in love with someone else. Speaking on behalf
Attack on London: Hunting the 7/7 Bombers — A limited-series retrospective marks the 20th anniversary of the coordinated suicide bombings that sent Britain into three weeks of paranoia and xenophobic panic. These days, all they have to do is wait for another tweet from Ricky Gervais. (Netflix)
Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel — This week’s episode profiles the clothing brand that was hailed as forward-thinking and sex-positive, only to be revealed as a hornet’s nest of harassment and financial mismanagement. EMERALD RHYMIVERSARY
Nerdcore pioneer MC Chris reflects on 20 years of touring and being called a nerd
BY JESSICA BATTISTI
The first time rapper, comedian, voice actor and writer Christopher Ward — better known as MC Chris — performed in front of a live audience, he played the father in his Montessori school’s rendition of The Night Before Christmas, throwing up on his sash mid-performance.
Decades later, the high-pitched pioneer of the hip-hop subgenre nerdcore is marking his 20th anniversary of being on the road with his “20 Years of Touring” jaunt alongside Tampa-based
nerdcore rapper Swell Rell. And the duo are coming to Orlando Friday.
Best known for his recurring role as MC P Pants on Adult Swim’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force, as well as serving as an animator and writer for the series, Ward has released over a dozen albums since he began performing in 2004, rapping about superheroes, Star Wars, video games and other aspects of “nerd culture.” Ward tells Orlando Weekly he was hesitant to accept the “nerd” label at the beginning of his career as he
was coming up in New York’s punk rock scene.
“It was like my secret thing, so it was very weird to find out that there were a lot of people like me doing the same thing, and that there was a genre associated with it,” Ward says. “But these days, I don’t mind. I think it was just a matter of growing up and realizing you get labeled. And sometimes it’s hard to deal with labels of geek and nerd, but over the years, obviously, I’ve chilled out about it and it’s great to be considered at all.”
Worshiping the works of the Saturday Night Live cast and Mel Brooks in his “kind of strict” Catholic household growing up, Ward and his family’s sense of humor shaped his approach to his art. After he discovered rap around his freshman year of high school via a mixtape passed his way featuring De La Soul, Ward learned to rap while playing PC games in his basement and listening to A Tribe Called Quest.
“I think that really shaped me learning how to rhyme,” Ward says.“I was kind of Karate Kid in

the sense that I was listening to rap constantly. I was playing games but I was also memorizing it.”
Combining his love of music and comedy, Ward’s discography is full of skits, which he says were inspired by Eminem and De La Soul.
When asked about his comparison of the complementary forces of comedy and rap to “chocolate and peanut butter,” Ward says, “I feel like no matter what kind of rap it is, a strong sense of humor and a sense of cleverness is really important. It’s what makes great rappers rise above the rest. I believe that it all comes down to just writing poems, basically, or songs, and it’s about how clever you can be with your songs.”
Even beyond the nearly 50-date tour and convention appearances spanning from June to December, this has been a particularly productive year for Ward. In February, the rapper started the “None of This Matters” podcast with his former Aqua Teen Hunger Force co-star Dana Snyder. Ward says the podcast — in which they rant about Disney, insider information on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, raising Ward’s 10-year-old son as a single father, and more — fell into place at a time when he needed it most, following his therapist’s resignation last fall.
“It’s been an amazing experience. It’s made me happier than anything I’ve worked on in a really long time. And I love that we can always keep the conversation going,” Ward says.
Following the end of his tour, Ward plans to take a much-needed break and focus on finishing two work-in-progress albums: King in Black and Underwater Wars. With two fully written series pilots in his back pocket, Ward hopes to take another screenwriting class after finishing an album.“I keep on writing in hopes that if that next chapter ever does arrive, I’m ready for it,” he says. Reflecting back on his career, the now self-managed artist says a piece of advice he would give the 2004 MC Chris is to “get his hands dirty and figure out how everything works instead of just giving it to somebody else.” Ward hopes if there’s one mark he’s left behind on the genre, it’s that you can still be a good parent and a good professional.
“It’s really important to be who you really are. Don’t follow trends, create your own thing, and see what happens,” says Ward. “I think that’s how the best music happens, when you kind of have tunnel vision, or when it’s done in private, and then you reveal it to the world, and you end up connecting with more people than you could imagine.”

That’s the thing about tradition. Tradition isn’t cool. It’s not trying to be cool. It’s beyond cool. Innovation is laudable, crucial even. But when in human history has a new pair of jeans ever felt as good as old ones?
The intellectual sparring over old vs. new could go on ad infinitum. In the heart, however, there’s much less debate. There’s just no depth quite like the patina of time. The fresh thrill of novelty is a fleeting thing. But the halo of the classic? Eternal. And there’s only so much soul to be gotten from egg punk.
Orlando band Sick Dogs — the duo of Ryan Rawtone (vocals, guitar, bass) and Patrick O’Neal (drums, background vocals) — know this sweet spot. There’s no experimental muss or fuss in their well-worn punk rock. Leave all that oblique shit to the eggheads. Sick Dogs shoot it straight. They care about being true, not hip. And there’s no truth like the timeless glory of rock & roll.
Sick Dogs are punks from the rock, not hardcore, side of the tracks. It’s the sound of the streets, not the arty underground. And thus, their new self-titled album is a salvo of anthems equally suited to a pub or a pit.
This eponymous sophomore album, their first in over three years, is the most chiseled look for Sick Dogs to date. These nine songs roll tough and triumphant with more muscle than ever before. It’s a nonstop mainline of stout blue-collar heart that drinks at the same bar as the Dropkick Murphys. There’s even some big AC/DC rock swag in here for good kicks (“RNR Don’t Play by the Rules”).
Nowhere on this record are there any trendy distractions. There’s no pop corn or overwrought

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
FEMME PWR: For women and their allies, the forecast ain’t so good right now. The war on women’s rights is no longer an insidious undercurrent of American society but rather a mainstream zeitgeist. It’s why events like this week’s FEMME PWR show are especially crucial: as not simply a celebration of feminine expression but a reveille to gather and resist the fascist tide. This showcase — featuring STELLA, NOTAM, Catnap and No Clue — is a diverse roundup of young, femme-fronted area bands
that spans punk, emo, shoegaze, alt-rock and more. It’s a native sampler of next-gen talent that’s a reminder of the power of the female voice and a reclamation of the future. (8 p.m. Thursday, June 26, Will’s Pub, $10-$15)
Billy Woods: Hip-hop is king, which also means that some of the worst rap in history is enjoying clout right now. New York rapper Billy Woods, however, is the real deal in all regards. There’s not a shred of mainstream pop shit in him. His progressive hip-hop vision is sharply literate and uncompromisingly artistic. His brand-new album, Golliwog, for prime example, is a nihilistic psych-rap landscape laced with apocalyptic jazz that plays like a fever dream. Expect a journey to the bleeding edge of hip-hop. (7 p.m. Friday, June 27, The Abbey, $33.53)
Curse Mackey, SINE, L.U.S.T.: Austin’s Curse Mackey is a credentialed figure in neoindustrial music. But here, he’ll always hold a valiant place for one of the biggest clutch plays in Orlando music history when he stepped up to the mic alongside the heroic David J. to fill in for the suspiciously absent Peter Murphy at the botched Bauhaus 40th anniversary show in 2019. We still remember and appreciate that. This time, Mackey returns instead for a well-prepared performance of his own music. Opening is fellow Austin act SINE, who shares some of that credit since frontwoman/percussionist Rona Rougeheart also performed alongside Mackey and David J. at that ill-fated show. Local support will be from South Floridian dark synth-pop act L.U.S.T. (8 p.m. Friday, June 27, Will’s Pub, $20.22) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

post-metal that is unparalleled in strength and passion, backed by a power trio of Italian musicians including members of Afterhours and Teatro Degli Orrori. The band just released brainy and urgent double LP Mansuetude. Live, the hulking Robinson is like Henry Rollins but 100 times more intimidating. Meanwhile, cult favorites Today Is the Day are a roar of pure metallized hatred. If you let this one slip by, we’ll never trust your taste again. 7 p.m.,

The Beautiful Downgrade
Much-missed and formerly local artist Brandon Guerts returns to Orlando to appear in a one-
night-only group show at the new Space Station location in SoDo, and it’s very much a can’t-miss prospect. This will be Guerts’ first time showcasing his illustrations in Orlando in nearly a decade, and he promises a new body of “narrative works.” If they’re anything like the sketches he crafted watching the chaos at Maryland Death Fest, it’ll be a hot one. The evening also features similarly adventurous locals Brian Phillips, Cassidy Jones, Daniel Harris Mendoza, Elly Adkinson, Justin Luper and many more. 6 p.m., Space Station, 315 W. Grant St., facebook.com/spacestationorlando, free. — MM

Heart
Class-rock legends and OG Seattle rockers Heart are out on a surprising tour this summer, promising all the hits for their Orlando fans. The band, led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, bring their perhaps too on-the-nose monikered “An Evening With Us” tour to the Kia Center Friday. Each night Heart will perform two sets with no opening act. These shows are notable in that they will be Ann Wilson’s first concerts back with the band since treatment for cancer last year. And that’s a milestone worth celebrating with their discography of hits. 8 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $55.50-$185. — MM

Panels topics on the day will cover it all: comics, movies, TV shows, gaming, up to and including a discussion on virtual safe spaces for the furry community. Orlando-based funk band Raspberry Pie, drag performances and a “Sissy That Cosplay” parade round out the live entertainment for the day. 10 a.m., Central Florida Fairgrounds, 4603 W. Big Country
Nostalgia tours for Gen Xers are increasingly starting to look like the Motown package tours of the last few years, with a few surviving original members doing their best to capture the old magic — with wildly varying results. And yet! This lineup is so incredibly overstuffed, the odds are in your favor, ’80s kids, that there will be some winners. You’ve got a version of Big Country — a Scots band that should have been bigger than U2 — alongside one of two versions of Gene Loves Jezebel making the rounds, Bow Wow Wow without Annabella Lwin, and Tommy Tutone. So, yes, maybe not full reunions, but these reconstituted lineups are still sturdy enough to play the hits, and we’re very ready to get lost in nostalgia these days. 7 p.m., Mount Dora Music Hall, 520 N. Baker St., Mount Dora, facebook.com/mountdoramusichall, $36.59-$145.79. — MM

LaChanze
Florida native and four-time Tony Award winner LaChanze is set to perform a solo cabaret at the Renaissance Theatre Monday. The Broadway veteran returns to her Florida home for a night dedicated to raising funds for the local theater. Originally from St. Augustine, the actress kickstarted her Broadway journey with Uptown … It’s Hot!, and later starred in Once On This Island — originating the role of Ti Moune and earning her first Tony nomination. In the 2005 production of The Color Purple, she played Celie and won the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical. Just this past week, she took home her fourth Tony as the producer of Purpose, which won the 2025 Tony Award for Best Play. The Ren’s house band will accompany LaChanze during her performance of career highlights. 8 p.m., Renaissance Theatre Co., 415 E. Princeton St., rentheatre.com, $30. — LF

Meet Bruce!
This week’s dog is Bruce (A572805) — 13 years old and struggling at our shelter. We don’t know much about him, as he was abandoned by his family during a fire. They left him behind and never came back. We were called in when people noticed an old, emaciated dog wandering around the property, but hiding from everyone. Bruce was brought in to our shelter: a calm old man, riddled with scars and tumors, shy but friendly, and absolutely starving.
What we do know about Bruce is that he’s been through a lot, and his eyes tell the story better than we could. At 13, he is in rough shape, and we know his time is limited. We also know it’s a lot to ask of anyone, but still we are reaching out, pleading, hoping for someone special to fill Bruce’s remaining days with love.
Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-8363111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
