» Camping World Stadium proposed upgrades were revealed
The city of Orlando has unveiled renderings and features of the proposed $400 million upgrade to downtown venue Camping World Stadium, which include hurricane bracing added to the exterior of the stadium that looks like something off an Esquivel album cover, a retractable stage pocket to accommodate the scale of larger touring bands, revamped upper bowls, a new upper bowl on the north side, new premium suites and slightly expanded seating capacity to 65,000. The publicized renderings come from architects DLR Group Inc. The funds for the renovation will come from the Tourist Development Tax fund — money that cannot, by law, be spent on more pressing quality-of-life issues for the greater Orlando populace. The project was approved last November by the Orange County Board of Commissioners with anticipated completion by late 2027. The BCC hoped that Orlando might be the temporary home of the Jacksonville Jaguars while their stadium undergoes renovations in 2027, and pledged $11 million in April to persuade the NFL to pick Camping World as the host stadium. The county’s Municipal Planning Board is set to review the new renderings on Aug. 19.
» Federal judge blocked key parts of Florida’s new ballot initiative law
A federal judge has blocked a key part of a new law that imposed additional restrictions on the state’s ballot-initiative process, saying a ban on non-Florida residents and non-U.S. citizens collecting and delivering petitions “imposes a severe burden on political expression that the state has failed to justify.”
U.S. District Judge Mark Walker’s ruling, however, allowed several other parts of the law to remain in effect, including a requirement that people who gather more than 25 signed petitions register with the state and a moratorium on elections supervisors processing petitions from July 1 through Sept. 30. Florida Decides Healthcare, a political committee sponsoring a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at expanding Medicaid coverage, filed the court challenge in May after the Republican-controlled Legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis approved the law. Smart & Safe Florida, a committee behind a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow recreational marijuana, also is a plaintiff in the case. A committee proposing a measure aimed at ensuring access to clean water also has joined the challengers.
» Challenge to part of Florida’s porn age-verification law was dropped
More than a year after Florida lawmakers passed a measure that they said would help protect children online, plaintiffs have dropped a challenge to part of the social media law (HB 3) that requires age verification for access to websites with pornographic content. U.S. District Judge Mark Walker last week closed a lawsuit filed in December by the Free Speech Coalition, an adult-entertainment industry group and other plaintiffs. A U.S. Supreme Court decision last month upheld the constitutionality of a similar Texas law. The porn-related part of HB 3 applies to any business that “knowingly and intentionally publishes or distributes material harmful to minors on a website or application, if the website or application contains a substantial portion of material harmful to minors.” It defines “substantial portion” as more than 33.3 percent of total material on a website or app. The dismissal does not affect a separate lawsuit challenging another part of HB 3 that seeks to prevent children under age 16 from opening social-media accounts on some platforms. Walker last month issued a preliminary injunction to block the social-media restrictions on First Amendment grounds, and the state has appealed.
» Weather experts said accuracy of hurricane forecasts will suffer under Trump budget cuts
A group of weather experts warned last week that forecast accuracy for major storms and hurricanes has improved dramatically in recent years, but this capacity is being seriously compromised by proposed budget cuts to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration by the Trump administration. The Trump administration’s proposed NOAA budget for fiscal year 2026 would close a dozen government research labs, including the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami, which includes NOAA’s Hurricane Research Division and the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, which developed most of the improvement in hurricane forecast models. Dr. Robert Atlas, former director of the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory,
said that lab performs various functions critical to hurricane forecasting. In addition to the proposed future cuts, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed on July 4 by President Trump includes $200 million in cuts to NOAA’s weather forecasting and public alert programs.
» DeSantis said he wants to prevent ‘tech overlords’ from taking over Florida After vetoing a bill calling for studying the effects of artificial intelligence on Florida workers, Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state will develop a plan to prevent “tech overlords” from taking over. While offering few details, DeSantis warned last week of “very dangerous” impacts of rapidly changing AI. He said Florida will “develop a coherent approach to this.” This comes after DeSantis on June 30 vetoed a bill (HB 827) dealing with automation and artificial intelligence. The bill, which passed the Legislature in April with only one dissenting vote, would have directed part of the state Department of Commerce to study issues such as job losses and gains. “Recognizing that AI trends are ever-evolving in delivery, skill development and in-demand career tracks, it makes no sense to wait for the report to be published by the state’s labor statistics bureau,” DeSantis wrote in a veto letter. “Indeed, such a report — to the extent it has value — would likely be obsolete by the time it was actually published.” But Rep. Leonard Spencer, a Gotha Democrat who sponsored the bill, expressed disappointment in the veto. “It was a proactive, data-driven approach — designed not to regulate innovation, but to better understand how it is reshaping our economy, labor markets and communities,” Spencer said in a statement. Last month, DeSantis criticized a congressional proposal that would have prevented states from regulating artificial intelligence. The U.S. Senate ultimately rejected the proposal.

Florida Democrats describe disturbing conditions after tour of Alligator Alcatraz
BY JACKIE LLANOS, FLORIDA PHOENIX
U.S. Democratic representatives characterized the state-run immigrant detention center in the Everglades as a cruel and wasteful political stunt following a guided tour Saturday.
Members of Congress and state legislators who visited the site described seeing bugs on mattresses, toilets and showers that lacked privacy, small food portions, and temperatures between 83 and 85 degrees in the air-conditioned areas.
“There are really disturbing, vile conditions, and this place needs to be shut the hell down,” said South Florida U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of the detention center at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport.
The South Florida Democrat said 32 men slept in each of the cages with bed bunks and three sinks attached to the toilets. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced hundreds of people started arriving on July 2.
Democrats labeled the tour as sanitized because they couldn’t speak to any of the detainees or staff.
Detainees have told the Miami Herald and CBS News that they hadn’t been able to shower, the toilets didn’t flush, and that the food had maggots.
Anna Eskamani, a state representative from Orlando, said Kevin Guthrie, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, led the tour. The agency is in charge of the site.

‘BLATANT, ILLEGAL, AND CAVALIER’
Orlando lawmakers Anna Eskamani and Carlos Guillermo Smith are among Dems filing lawsuit for being denied entrance to Alligator Alcatraz
BY MITCH PERRY, FLORIDA PHOENIX
The five Democratic state lawmakers who were denied entrance to inspect the new immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades last week filed a lawsuit in the Florida Supreme Court against Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida Department of Emergency Management Executive Director Kevin Guthrie on Thursday. They contend that their exclusion from the facility violated state law as well as the Florida Constitution by eroding the separation of powers and improperly restricting the authority of a co-equal branch of government.
State Sens. Shevrin Jones and Carlos Guillermo Smith and state Reps. Michele Rayner, Anna Eskamani, and Angie Nixon are the plaintiffs in the case. The five Democratic lawmakers attempted to enter the facility on July 3, but were denied entrance for what officials there claimed were “safety concerns” that the Democratic lawmakers say were never identified to them. Their attempt to visit the facility came two days after President Donald Trump, Gov. DeSantis, and several other state Republican officials held a tour and roundtable discussion at the center with members of the media.
lack of clarity on what rules and procedures are actually being followed as it pertains to those being detained, as it pertains to what their status is,” Eskamani said in a phone interview with Florida Phoenix.
Eskamani is one of five Democrats in the Florida Legislature suing the state after they weren’t allowed to enter the detention center on July 3. FDEM invited Congress members and state lawmakers on Wednesday for the tour Saturday, when U.S. representatives said they were already planning on conducting an oversight visit.
Meanwhile, Kristi Noem, secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, defended conditions at the detention center during a press conference in Tampa on Saturday, saying it was held to the same standards as federal facilities. However, she sidestepped specific questions about the site because it is state-run.
“Any issues that were there have been addressed,” she said. “It’s a fantastic resource for us to be able to utilize in order for a detention facility to repatriate people back home to their home countries.”
Governors in five Republican states have told Noem they want to build detention centers like the one in the Everglades, Noem said. She refused
The five Democrat allege in their lawsuit that under Florida Statutes 944.23 and 951.225, members of the Legislature are explicitly entitled to conduct unannounced visits to any state or local detention facility at their “pleasure.”
They also contend that DeSantis and Guthrie undermined the State Emergency Management Act under which the governor derives his emergency powers. They are seeking a writ to compel DeSantis and Guthrie “to provide immediate, unannounced access to the Petitioners to the DadeCollier Training & Transition Airport site of the proclaimed ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ detention facility.”
to say which governors expressed interest.
Spring Hill Republican Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, an ally of Gov. Ron DeSantis, also visited on Saturday. The senator, possibly in line as DeSantis’ pick as chief financial officer, wrote on X that Democrats’ rhetoric about the detention center didn’t match reality.
“I actually laid down in one of the beds and it was really comfortable,” Ingoglia wrote.“So, any complaints about squalor conditions is nothing more than bullsh*t and political theater.”
“Alligator Alcatraz” is the name Florida’s Republican leadership have given the camp. Despite the poor conditions Democrats described, South Florida Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz said the detention center shouldn’t be compared to a concentration camp. Moskowitz served as the head of FDEM for two years under DeSantis.
“Listen, it is as bad as it can be, but it is not a concentration camp, and people should not use Holocaust references to describe what’s going on behind us,” he told reporters following the tour.

illegal, and cavalier nature of violation of the Florida Constitution and statutory authority puts members of the legislative and judicial branches at risk if we, those sworn to protect and defend the Constitution and rule of law, do not speak out loudly and boldly against its trespasses and transgressors.”
The lawsuit was filed by two Democratic members of the Florida House, attorneys Ashley Gantt and LaVon Bracy Davis. Along with Rep. Rayner, the three female Democratic lawmakers announced last month that they were forming their own law firm called BDGR P.A.
Officials with FDEM said earlier this week that state statute grants inspection authority only to legislative committees, “not to individual legislators engaging in political theater.”
They also said that while Florida Statute 944.23 does authorize members of the Legislature to visit state correctional institutions, they have to be those under the jurisdiction of the Florida Department of Corrections.
“The Alligator Alcatraz facility is not under the jurisdiction of the Department of Corrections and does not otherwise fall within the statutory definition of a ‘state correctional institution,’” said FDEM spokesperson Stephanie Hartman, referring to the appellation given the facility by state leaders.
During the roundtable discussion on July 1 when the facility was opened to the media, Gov. DeSantis described the detention center as a “one-stop shop” with a runway that will allow the federal government to carry out deportation flights. The governor used a state of emergency declaration he issued in January 2023 to take over and begin the speedy construction on the land Miami-Dade County owns.
The department announced on Wednesday that it will open the center for all state lawmakers and members of Congress this Saturday for a 90-minute visit.
Reports of poor conditions
The filing of the lawsuit followed news reports of poor conditions at the 3,000 person-capacity tent and trailer detention center. Multiple detainees told the Miami Herald and CBS News that they had gone days without showering, the toilets didn’t flush and temperatures fluctuated between extremes.
“The rule of law must be upheld,” the lawsuit states.
“Our Constitution does not coronate a king. It is not hyperbolic to contend that the Governor’s actions, directly or indirectly through the actions of agency directors and their employees, could become more far reaching into the third branch of our government. Conjecture is not necessary at this moment because the distinctive and autonomous power of the legislative branch has and is being challenged by and through the executive branch. The blatant,
Two environmental groups, Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity, have already gone to federal court to sue the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, FDEM and Miami-Dade County alleging construction of the detention center violates a federal law that requires environmental analysis of potential harms and that the public did not get an opportunity to comment.
The governor’s office responded late Thursday afternoon to the filing of the lawsuit.
“Yesterday, the Florida Division of Emergency Management invited all Florida legislators to tour Alligator Alcatraz this weekend. Today, five Democrat legislators responded by filing a frivolous lawsuit demanding access to Alligator Alcatraz,” said Sierra Dean, deputy press secretary for Gov. DeSantis.
“The State is looking forward to quickly dispensing with this dumb lawsuit.”

‘WE DON’T PLAN ON GOING ANYWHERE’
Planned Parenthood clinics in Central Florida plan to stay open despite defunding threats under Trump
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
As reproductive healthcare provider
Planned Parenthood fights a new threat to funding from the Trump administration, clinics in Central Florida plan to remain open and operational, according to Planned Parenthood of Florida chief medical officer Dr. Robin Schickler, who spoke to Orlando Weekly about the current state of affairs.
“Patients in Central Florida — really, in Florida generally — should be reassured that we don’t plan on going anywhere,” Schickler confirmed in a phone last week. “We’ve been through a lot in Florida, and we’re still here taking care of lots of people, and that’s not going to change.”
Planned Parenthood scored a temporary injunction early last week in a federal lawsuit the nonprofit filed against the Trump administration over a provision of Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act that bans Medicaid payments to large health care nonprofits like Planned Parenthood that offer abortion procedures. The temporary block, according to the New York Times, will allow Planned Parenthood’s clinics to continue to receive Medicaid reimbursement for services that do not include abortion care.
Under existing law, Planned Parenthood is already barred from receiving Medicaid payments for abortion in Florida. But Dr. Schickler said this block allowed for their Florida clinics to reschedule appointments that their staff had initially been calling patients to cancel after Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (as it’s officially titled) into law.
“The weekend was tough after the bill was signed, because staff did have to reach out to those patients to cancel appointments and let them know we couldn’t see them,” Schickler explained, referring to patients with Medicaid served by their Florida clinics. “Thankfully, today’s kind of a reversal on that, but obviously that’s hard on everyone.”
President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a major budget reconciliation package approved by the GOP-majority Congress could cause millions of Americans on Medicaid to become uninsured over the next decade, according to estimates from the U.S. Congressional Budget
Office, in addition to cutting Medicaid reimbursements for larger abortion care nonprofits like Planned Parenthood.
The provision affecting Medicaid reimbursement specifically affects nonprofits that offer abortion care and generated at least $800,000 in revenue from Medicaid payments in the 2023 fiscal year.
According to Planned Parenthood, more than half of their patients nationwide, including thousands in Florida, are enrolled in Medicaid, a public health insurance plan specifically for low-income families, children and people with disabilities.
The nonprofit warned ahead of the budget bill’s passage that its provisions could lead to the closure of an estimated 200 Planned Parenthood clinics across 24 U.S. states, affecting access to healthcare for more than 1 million patients.
Florida, however, is not one of the states that is expected to see closures, Schickler confirmed. In fact, the nonprofit just today announced a merger between their two affiliates in Florida — Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida and Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida — in an effort to expand their service hours and access to care across the state’s 67 counties.
“We know what our patients are up against: relentless state restrictions on care, widespread maternity care deserts, and now a direct attack on access to Planned Parenthood for patients using Medicaid,” said Alexandra Mandado, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Florida, in a prepared statement. “In the face of these challenges, we’re not standing still — we’re moving forward. This merger allows us to meet the moment, meet the needs of our patients, and build something stronger for the future. Every Floridian deserves access to health care — no matter what.”
Planned Parenthood, which operates 17 health centers across Florida, has already been forced to reckon with Florida’s restrictive abortion law, which banned most abortions after six weeks, effective May 1, 2024. Within the first month of the law taking effect, Planned Parenthood said they navigated more than 300 Florida patients to abortion care options outside the U.S. Southeast,
where abortion is less restrictive.
But Planned Parenthood isn’t just an abortion clinic. Since abortion care was already ineligible for Medicaid reimbursement in Florida under pre-existing law, it’s the other health services their clinics provide to Floridians — such as birth control, prenatal care and cancer screenings — that they worry could be cut off if the provision of the bill they sued over is allowed to fully take effect.
“Reproductive health clinics would no longer be able to take Medicaid, so patients with Medicaid would no longer be able to see us,” Schickler explained.
The temporary injunction issued in Planned Parenthood’s lawsuit over the Big Beautiful Bill only lasts for 14 days, according to the New York Times. The lawsuit argues that the provision affecting their Medicaid reimbursement is unconstitutional, and violates constitutional rights to free speech under the First Amendment and equal protection under the Fifth Amendment.
Anti-abortion organizations like the religiously affiliated Heartbeat International have praised the budget bill, describing the bill signing last Friday as a “historic moment for the cause of life.”
“This bill is not about restricting care; it’s about restoring true care,” Heartbeat International CEO Jor-El Godsey claimed in an op-ed published by an anti-abortion website. “It takes Big Abortion’s heavy thumb off the scales and puts taxpayer dollars to work in places that supports both mother and child.”
For Godsey, and his anti-abortion comrades in arms, that includes Heartbeat Internationalsupported “crisis pregnancy centers,” which are facilities that often pose as abortion clinics but exist with the explicit goal of convincing pregnant women to not get an abortion. Dozens of these facilities in Florida receive taxpayer funds each year through the state’s “alternatives to abortion” program.
“While Trump slashes funding for evidence-based, regulated health providers, state lawmakers are steering desperate patients toward clinics that pretend to offer care — but lack the training, oversight and medical staff to handle basic complications, let alone emergencies like ectopic pregnancy,” said Debra Rosen, executive director of the nonprofit Reproductive Health and Freedom Watch (a group that supports abortion rights), in a statement.
“This is not freedom,” she argued, but a “trap” and a “two-tiered system where low-income women lose access to doctors and facilities equipped to care for them and are funneled into ideological storefronts dressed up as health centers.”
Although the temporary block on the provision affecting Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid reimbursement is temporary, Schickler remains optimistic that Planned Parenthood will be able to continue to operate in Florida. Their providers, after all, have already faced challenges from GOP state lawmakers who have historically declined to expand Medicaid insurance to more Floridians in need as it is, and have even
moved to make it harder for voters to do so themselves through the ballot box.
“We always find a way to get care to the communities in need, and that, I think is going to only get better with the merger — we’ll be able to reach people that we haven’t reached before,” she said.
According to a news release from her organization, the merger is expected to expand access to Planned Parenthood health services by increasing hours and service days at “several health centers” in Florida and providing more telehealth options for care.
“As government attacks continue to mount, our state and national health care landscape is calling on our organizations to take bold action to address health disparities, improve outcomes, and meet the diverse needs of our communities,” said Barbara Zdravecky, interim CEO at the former Planned Parenthood affiliate covering Central and Southwest Florida, in a statement.“With this merger, our unity will strengthen our ability to face these challenges for decades to come.”
Planned Parenthood has one clinic location each in Orlando, Kissimmee and Lakeland, two facilities in Tampa, and 12 other locations throughout Florida.

Artist Doug Rhodehamel built an artistic tribute to his friend Dave Plotkin. He wants you to see it and smile
BY ANTHONY MAUSS
Lured by the endless summer bliss of Florida sunshine and a dream of animating for Disney, artist Doug Rhodehamel moved to Orlando from Ohio in 1993 to put his education in industrial design to use. Rhodehamel quickly realized his approach to art wasn’t a good fit for the world of Walt and refocused his creative energy toward making art from the discarded materials around him.
Working primarily with discarded cardboard as a necessity soon developed into a signature style that blends an elegance of abstract forms with the rough imperfection of reclaimed materials. Rhodehamel creates objects that are both engagingly odd and comfortingly familiar.
Rhodehamel has been building objects and creating installations in unique and unexpected spaces throughout Orlando for 30 years. “I just like to make stuff and I like to make people smile and wonder. The stuff I make is from discarded
everyday objects. I try to make them playful and whimsical to bring everybody out of their crappy days, even if it is just for a moment or longer,” Rhodehamel explains.
Rhodehamel’s work can be seen throughout Orlando; he has mobiles installed in the Orlando Public Library, Orlando Science Center and the Orange County Administrative Building. His work can also be seen adorning the walls and hanging from the ceilings of many local businesses, like the flamingo at Will’s Pub or the myriad of creations he’s hung both openly and surreptitiously at Stardust Video and Coffee. Renowned for limited runs and one-offs, Rhodehamel’s smaller works can sometimes be found at discerning boutiques like Veer Artist Collective. Rhodehamel has a deep and longstanding connection to the local arts and culture scene, and his work has a way of popping up in the most unlikely of places.

“I like the immersive things because it is fun to go into a different world and [if] people come in and gasp,” pauses Rhodehamel for a second, “I’ve done my job right.”
“I really enjoy it. Most of the time it’s cool. I have this idea, but then planning the whole thing is a mess and then putting it together is awful. When I did my Jellyfish show I just hated it until I turned on the lights and thought, ‘Oh my god, it looks amazing!’ The tedium is very impressive; you can see the amount of work that goes into something,” adds Rhodehamel. “People see my installations and they think, ‘Wow, you had to build every one of those.’ Installations are fun because they can be a whole bunch of something. They don’t even need to be that good [individually], but if you have thousands of them, then it is impressive.”
paper-bag mushroom series, have been “planted” on every continent, including Antarctica. Created from brown paper bags and laid out in natural amorphous patterns ranging from just a handful to hundreds of individual mushrooms, these outcroppings “bloom” frequently throughout Orlando but most notably during the Fringe Festival.
“That came out of nowhere. I used to brown-bag my lunch for high school and one day I made the bag into a mushroom and I started to plant them in the ground and people loved them and I thought, ‘OK, it’s like I just TP’ed someone’s yard’, but people liked them and then people wanted to pay me to install them,” says Rhodehamel. “I love that I created something that is so simple and brings so many smiles.” Always eager to foster collaboration and creativity, Doug encourages everyone to create their own mushroom installations. (Find directions on his site.)
Beyond mushrooms and reclaimed objects, Rhodehamel is renowned for his imaginative and unique instillations. 2005’s Bamboo at Coma Gallery consisted of 14 bamboo trees constructed of toilet and paper-towel rolls, straws and thousands of hand-cut leaves. His Migration 1-3 series (2007-2008), exhibited at CityArts, Say It Loud and the Maitland Art Center, respectively, featured 4,000 matchbook camel sculptures, 2,000 clay badger figurines and 41 running lederhosen. Always looking to push forward the possibilities of art, Rhodehamel’s Jellyfish series installed 1,000 jellyfish at CityArts and incorporated floating
His latest installation, Flight of the Picklefish: A Tribute Installation for Dave Plotkin, continues this tradition of immersive world-building. Initially approached by curator Justin Luper at the Casselberry Arts & Sculpture Houses to do a solo show, Rhodehamel enlisted close friend Dave Plotkin [ed. note: also a former OW staffer, WPRK DJ, political activist and cultural mover] to work together on a concept for the show. Unfortunately, before they had the chance to solidify any concepts, Plotkin unexpectedly passed away in May. After contemplating canceling the show, Rhodehamel opted instead to make the show a tribute to his friend and collaborator.
“We had plans to get together that weekend to float around the pool, eat pizza, listen to B-52’s and discuss the show. We never got a chance to discuss preliminary plans so I tried to conjure up Dave in my head. ‘What would Dave have liked?’ He was on a pickle kick at the time and had these old drawings that I called war pickles, which were just these pickle-shaped things with thorns on them. So I thought I could build war pickles and then they turned into these things which are … not pickles. But I still liked the pickle thing, so I thought I could have a whole bunch of picklefish swimming around, and then I made a pickle moon as well. I wanted to make something that Dave would see and laugh at. I feel like it is my job to bring out the creativity in and show people that the world isn’t always an awful place, and there is always something nice about it. Even if it is just for a moment.” Flight of the Picklefish opens Friday and runs through Aug. 29.

Anyone old enough to remember Orlando in the 1980s can agree that David Siegel’s greatest contribution was not Westgate Resorts, not Versailles, but the Mystery Fun House
When David Siegel passed away in April of this year, he left behind a complicated legacy that includes a timeshare empire stretching from Florida to Las Vegas; a record of anti-drug activism and conservative political donations; and a megamansion dubbed Versailles so ginormous that they made a Broadway musical about it. But everyone old enough to remember Orlando in the 1980s can agree that Siegel’s greatest contribution was the Mystery Fun House, a family entertainment center which operated on Major Boulevard from 1976 until 2001. Almost a quarter-century after its closing, Kissimmee’s massive Westgate Vacation Villas is bringing that seminal attraction back to life — in spirit, anyway — with their new Mystery Fun House Arcade Experience (mysteryfunhouse.com), where I recently took an exclusive soft-opening media tour ahead of its Aug. 21 grand opening.
Long before Universal Studios Florida opened across the street, Siegel co-founded Mystery Fun House and filled its uniquely themed multiple chambers with obstacle courses, optical illusions and early arcade games, eventually expanding into mini-golf and laser tag. I can still vividly recall being terrified by the walkthrough’s gory haunted house-style scenes of Dracula dining with his fiendish friends, and attempting fruitlessly to aim my blaster while bouncing across the floor inside Starbase Omega.
As big an impression as Mystery Fun House left on Gen X tourists like myself, it made a larger impact on Siegel himself, whose own
mother worked at the attraction. “The Mystery Fun House itself was a huge part of Westgate’s early infancy,” according to Jared Saft, Westgate’s chief business and strategy officer.“It was before he owned Westgate, before he built Westgate, and it was what got him excited about the idea of creating experiences for guests that are visiting tourist destinations.”
That history means there were high expectations for anything bearing the Mystery Fun House name, so Westgate took their time transforming formerly unused space underneath the water park into a nearly 10,000-square-foot arcade complex. Initial planning began more than a decade ago, and the ultimate design was conceived about two and a half years ago, says director of architecture and design Kevin Tay.
“This is a long, long process; we’ve done many iterations of design, and worked with our partners in corporate operations, maintenance, housekeeping, F[ood] & B[everage], and a lot with our executives to kind of narrow in everyone’s wants and needs. Ultimately, our goal was to figure out, how do we reimagine something that was popular in the late ’70s and the ’80s, and bring it to a contemporary feel? … It was a delicate balance of, ‘How do we reimagine it but stay true to the roots?’”says Saft. The resulting aesthetic is a blend of retro and cutting-edge, which begins with custom pixel-art animations displayed along a bold blue corridor leading off the recently renovated lobby.“A lot of it pays homage to arcade culture of the ’80s — but we made it contemporary, because we didn’t want to lose children today.”
Guests venturing inside are greeted first by a colorful mural, where I bumped into a friendly walk-around incarnation of the winking wizard who once loomed over MFH’s entrance. Yet to be installed during my preview were my two most anticipated attractions: a hallway displaying historical artifacts, including original animatronics and a fortune-teller photo op; and a mirror maze inspired by MFH’s memorably maddening labyrinth. Finishing touches were also still being applied to Sweet Dreamery — a Willy
Wonka-esque candy store with an actual waterslide running through the center of it — and the cyberpunk-style MEGAbites fast-food hall. However, the centerpiece arcade operated by Chuck E. Cheese — which actually made MFH’s original animatronics — is already in full swing. “It’s kind of a natural partnership: two iconic, historic amusement and arcade brands figuring out how to do it together,” says Saft. “This is not a Chuck E. Cheese; it’s a Mystery Fun House Arcade Experience powered by Chuck E. Cheese.”
That experience includes both an array of the newest virtual reality shoot-’em-ups straight from the IAAPA convention floor and an impressive assortment of claw machines, along with a Fun Zone of kiddie-centric rides and carnival games that’s the only attraction in town where you’ll find Pixar’s Cars and Universal’s Minions side-by-side. Chuck’s Arcade, an adult-oriented corner of pinball tables and throwback coin-ops, is more my speed. Alas, most are contemporary reproductions with flat-screen monitors, but Asteroids still sports a gloriously analog monochrome vector display. And unlike in the ’80s, you won’t be pumping any quarters into these machines; a $5 swipe card gives you 50 credits, and most games cost 15-30 credits per play.
Modern-day tastes and liability laws means that a re-creation of many iconic Mystery Fun House elements — like the bruise-inducing rotating barrel — could never be built today.
But Westgate’s new arcade experience tries to honor the original in a way that Siegel, who was heavily involved in reviewing the project prior to his passing, personally approved.
“This was very special to him. I think toward the end of his life, he wanted to make sure that a lot of the imprint that he left felt relevant to what he had created and his story, and this was kind of the capstone of that for us,” says Saft. “It’s unfortunate he’s not here for this day, but we know he’s up there, you know, helping us move things along and make sure that the games are running and that people are having a good time.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

Turull’s Kitchen & Bar feeds the need for diners with Spain
on the brain
BY MICHAEL MURPHY
Iblame Miles Davis. Sketches of Spain warped my teenage brain — fueled a castanet-riddled wanderlust that had me forever looking east. Today, Spain is part-time home. I spend a month a year in Catalonia and have gobbled my way from San Sebastian to Sevilla. They say write what you know, and I know my caracoles from my cabrales.
Be it part-time Spaniard, full-time expat or badly behaved Brit on holiday, the siren song of Spain has long lured. Orwell took a bullet for it. And it was the strum of live Spanish guitar that pulled us into Hiram and Diane Turull’s homage to the Iberian, the logically named Turull’s Kitchen & Bar.
That Turull’s is inspired by Barcelona is no secret; Instagram told me. And the southside strip-maller does vibe like many of the less bloggable, more contemporized tabernas in “Barna,” places where authenticity and quality are not always mutually exclusive. What was unquestionably authentic was its largely empty dining room at 6 p.m., an hour no self-respecting Spaniard would deign to consider dinner.
Turull’s menu features a smattering of larger plates but is anchored in tapas, including the ubiquitous barometer bite tortilla de patatas ($12). Our forecast? Dry and spongy. To
resuscitate, pieces of the potato omelet were bathed in the garlicky oil of a neighboring cazuela of gambas al ajillo ($17) — a cazuela of goodness brimming with sweet, springy shrimp. Another barometer bite, pan con tomate ($8), fared better. Tomato bread is simple in concept, less simple to execute. Bread is the non-negotiable, and the bread at Turull’s was sufficiently reminiscent of traditional “glass bread” to impress, crisp-crusted and open-crumbed — a perfect raft for fresh tomato, olive oil and salt. We could have eaten several plates. I keep three things in my fridge in Spain: enough cheap verdejo to tranquilize a toro, gazpacho and croquetas. Croquetas are the busy little fingers of Catalan cuisine — wiggling their way into every menu and supermarket, where quality, locally-made takes are often found. The crisp exterior and creamy béchamel-and-cod interior of Turull’s croquetas de bacalao ($13) tasted precisely of these choicer store-bought versions. This is a compliment.
Jamón Ibérico ($36) — acorn-fed piggie — arrived like smoke on the water — deep purplish — with ivory-white streaks of fat. Although oily and muted, far from the melty wow of revered brands like Cinco Jotas, it was ham, and it was vanished.

debate in Spain. We ordered a paella Valenciana that wasn’t paella Valenciana ($65), but was what most Americans consider paella to be: a riot of land-and-sea protein (in this case, chorizo, chicken and mixed seafood) nestled in saffron rice. Although we enjoyed it, there were issues. First, a sacrilege: There was zero socarrat — the prized crispy rice layer at the bottom of the pan. And second, mollusks also played spoiler: Like the fat-pipe sourced versions found in many Orlando restaurants, the mussels were wads of lifeless funk.
Paella negra is also not a thing. Arroz negro is. Semantics aside, paella negra ($41), calamari cooked in black rice, was a clearly defined winner. Although its squiddy ringlets were hoop-earring svelte, the flavor was fat with squid-ink umami and much enjoyed.
We capped the evening with a boozy carajillo, a crema Catalana lacking in the characteristic citrus and cinnamon ($12), and a straight-ahead slice of almond cake ($11). All were adequately tasty and like Turull’s itself, Proust Effective. Turull’s flavors do remind me of Catalonia. And even if many of the finer notes are clumsily played — like covering the “Concierto de Aranjuez” on the kazoo — those with Spain on the brain will still appreciate the tune. dining@orlandoweekly.com

COUCHSURFING
Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.
BY STEVE SCHNEIDER
Premieres Wednesday:
Amy Bradley Is Missing — Her family still believes Amy Lynn Bradley is alive, even though she went missing from a cruise ship all the way back in 1998. This documentary seeks to uncover the truth, which may or may not dovetail with several sightings of Bradley that have been reported over the years. Given that she was a recent college graduate at the time she vanished, one thing’s for sure: It would be a waste of time to check Leonardo DiCaprio’s house. (Netflix)
The Summer I Turned Pretty — As the final season commences, Belly has settled into a comfortable and healthy relationship with Jeremiah, but his brother, Conrad, won’t give up her affections without a fight. Yes, it’s the height of flattery to have two people fighting over you. Just ask Crimea. (Prime Video)
Premieres Thursday:
Catalog — An Egyptian widower has some
unconventional help in raising his kids as a single dad: He takes his cues from an online parenting guide left behind by his late wife. It’s hard to see how anybody could feel overwhelmed with that kind of an assist, but watch him kvetch anyway that she didn’t include a reminder of what day the recycling goes out. (Netflix)
Community Squad — Season 2 finds our crew of misfit neighborhood patrollers dealing with the discovery that a dangerous criminal gang is operating out of the local coffeehouse. What’s even worse is that they won’t let you use the bathroom until you’ve done your first hit. (Netflix)
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — A murder mystery and an episode in the style of the original series are among the highlights of Season 3, which promises a different genre for every installment. Given the peculiar nature of the Roddenberry legacy, expect one
of those genres to be “17th remake of Genesis II.” (Paramount+)
Untamed — Eric Bana and Sam Neill play employees of the National Parks Service who team up to solve the mystery of a corpse that’s turned up in Yosemite. In a twist that would do the late David Lynch proud, it turns out to be the corpse of the Parks Service itself. (Netflix)
Premieres Friday:
Almost Family — The first meeting between two sets of in-laws turns into a game of one-upmanship that comes to represent the clashing cultures of Brazil and Argentina. It’s like Meet the Fockers if Robert De Niro plotted a coup and Barbra Streisand harbored escaped Nazis. (Netflix)
Superstar — Ingrid García-Jonsson plays the Spanish pop singer and TV celebrity Tamara, who found that elusive second act to her career after she had to change her name to Yurena for legal reasons. Good thing she didn’t go with her second choice, “Cowboy Carter.” (Netflix)
Vir Das: Fool Volume — The Indian comic completely reworked his fifth Netflix special when he lost his voice two months before taping. Apparently, “Vir Das” is what God hears when you say “Dave Chappelle.” (Netflix)
Wall to Wall — A desperate Korean sinks his last penny into an apartment, only to find out
that the place is ground zero for all kinds of disturbing dysfunction. Now’s your chance if you’ve ever wanted to know how Tom Hanks would have done as Player 456. (Netflix)
Premieres Monday:
The Hunting Wives — After her family relocates to East Texas, Brittany Snow falls under the spell of high-society doyenne Malin Akerman, who introduces her to a whole new world of sin and corruption. But hey, what happens in Nacogdoches stays in Nacogdoches. (Netflix)
Premieres Tuesday:
Hip Hop Was Born Here LL Cool J and Peyton Manning host five documentary episodes that chart the birth and evolution of one of the classic American forms in one of the great American cities. Which means New York. Next month on Peacock, Suge Knight extols the virtues of the West Coast before calling out a hit on Shari Redstone. (Paramount+)
Trainwreck: P.I. Moms — Making a bunch of soccer moms part-time private investigators seemed like a great idea as far as reality TV goes, but the house of cards collapsed when their program was discovered to be interfering with real cases for the sake of drama. Oh, and also the whole thing was a front for a major drug operation. Other than that, it’s a damn shame the show got canceled, because it was clearly what William Paley had been going for all along. DEAF RATTLE
Pennsylvania droner Planning for Burial plays the quiet part loud. Earplugs are mandatory
BY TYLER BARNEY
Thom Wasluck is always building something. When he’s not working in construction, he’s Planning for Burial — the stage name for his one-man band — or at least thinking about it.
“When we’re at crazy power plants in the middle of beautiful farmland, there’s something about this industrial mess in the middle of it that I find very beautiful mixed together. I think that plays a lot into the music I make, too.”
The Wilkes-Barre native’s musical moniker is a tribute to a tragic event from his childhood: “I was just shy of 13 [when] my grandmother had a heart attack and, out of nowhere, died,” Wasluck says. “My grandfather got sick with cancer right after that, and he did not want treatment. He wanted off this planet.”
As someone who “seemed like the most stoic, hardened man ever,” such a decision was not to be taken lightly. Wasluck recalls watching his grandfather “go and pick out his own headstone,” which remains “one of the most brutal things [he’s] ever seen.” Building on this brutality, Thom
laid the blueprints for his solo project in 2005, and he’s been Planning ever since.
One of Wasluck’s earliest listeners was Dan Barrett of Have a Nice Life, who started the label Enemies List Home Recordings in 2003 to distribute music for his own band and solo projects. “I was always on the Enemies List site early on, like 2007-08,” Wasluck tells OW. “And I posted my first album, Leaving, on there.” Building rapport with Barrett online, he later sent a copy of the album on CD to the label’s Connecticut headquarters. Enemies List released Leaving on a limited-edition CD in 2010, setting the foundation for Wasluck’s towering body of work.
From doom and drone to shoegaze and slowcore, the styles at play in Planning for Burial’s sound tend toward the somber end of the sonic spectrum. Wasluck’s signature blend of “very harsh, loud, breaking sound” with “a lot of melody” has damaged countless ears over the last 20 years, summoning shoegazers and headbangers alike to a near-deaf experience.
So what’s the method to the mashup? “I don’t
know if I’ve ever actually had a process,” he says. “Sometimes I’m just playing guitar in the basement — a quick little phrase — I’ll loop it, run over to a drum kit and play along. It’s constantly changing.” Same story when it comes to the words: “Sometimes lyrics might not come for a year or two afterwards. Sometimes lyrics are the first thing, and I want to build something around them. It’s always different.”
Recalling an interview with Earth frontman and drone O.G. Dylan Carlson, Wasluck elaborates on the hallucinatory effects of sound repetition: “Even if you’re playing the same thing over and over, it kind of changes, too,” he says. “As you’re looping stuff — especially at a loud volume — your brain starts tricking you into thinking there’s other things happening that aren’t really happening.”
The project began when Wasluck lived in New Jersey, but its roots resurfaced during his pilgrimage to Pennsylvania. After leaving for college and meeting a girl, he worked in New York City until an opportunity in Wilkes-Barre led him back home. Returning to his old haunts over a decade later spawned the third Planning for Burial LP, Below the House, which Wasluck wrote and recorded alone in the basement of his youth.
Released in 2017 by San Francisco experimental label The Flenser, the album opens wide with “Whiskey and Wine,” a heavy nod to the spirits swirling through Wasluck’s headspace at the time. “It’s true, I couldn’t keep my hands off of you,” he wails through a wall of sound,

concluding his message to the bottle with the confession, “I am weak.”
While Wasluck was straight-edge until his late 20s, he felt he was “missing out on a human experience” by abstaining from alcohol. “I didn’t take into consideration that alcoholism ran on both sides of my family for my grandparents,” he says.“And I went fucking hard for a couple years.” Then came the pandemic. But instead of doubling down on drinking, Wasluck decided to quit (cold turkey, at that). Now going on five years sober, he’s back with a brand-new album and a summer filled with fresh tour dates. The first Planning for Burial full-length in eight years, It’s Closeness, It’s Easy features a few of the songs Wasluck played during his last Orlando stop at Will’s Pub in 2022 — but something tells us they’ll sound a little different this time. Planning for Burial plays at Conduit this Wednesday with support from i.liedtomyself and ISYA. Make your plans.

LOCAL RELEASES
With his stars lining up fast, Orlando R&B artist Isaiah Falls is crystallizing into a new pop icon with breathless velocity. His big breakout only happened last year when 2024’s Drugs N’ Lullabies landed on lots of high-profile tastemaker lists and has since garnered tens of millions of plays. On the heat of that fire, Falls is now unveiling his new release on a rare groundswell of hype and ambition. Pushed by a hometown show this weekend at The Beacham that’s part of a national headlining tour with a European leg to follow this fall, his latest work — LVRS Paradise (Side A) — is the biggest Orlando release in a long time.
LVRS Paradise isn’t just Isaiah Falls’ proper full-length debut, it’s a major campaign that’s being rolled out as a sweeping double album. Although only the first half is currently out with the second half expected to follow shortly, Side A is already Falls’ latest and greatest statement. If Drugs N’ Lullabies was the big bang, then LVRS Paradise could well be the grand, sprawling universe that follows.
Side A is already an evolution for Falls. It’s a deeper sound that burnishes his varied hip-hop, Latin and Caribbean influences into a more distilled and synthesized R&B vision. If you thought his work was sexy before like millions of other people did, then lie back, baby.
These new tracks are a suite of creamy, dreamy vibes whose sole raison d’être is to seduce and spellbind. The music is minimal yet plush, allowing Falls’ sensual voice to own the spotlight like a 21st century Quiet Storm.
From the songwriting to the singing to the sound, Falls’ aesthetic is more honed and
With his stars lining up fast, Orlando R&B artist Isaiah Falls is crystallizing into a new pop icon with breathless velocity. And his new LVRS Paradise (Side A) is the biggest release from an Orlando artist in a long time
locked-in here. With Side A as an auspicious harbinger that’s equal parts feeling and swagger, LVRS Paradise is well on its way to being an opus that cements him as a young contender on the R&B vanguard.
But even though all the moves Falls is making right now signal prime-time aspirations, he continues to preach the native gospel with place-stamped song titles like “A Florida Luv Story,” a regional touch he’s been doing since his last collection. It’s lyrical and musical vernacular like this that makes LVRS Paradise (Side A) a work with eyes on the big time but a heart that’s still proudly local.
The album now streams everywhere, and Isaiah Falls will rock it for the hometown crowd this weekend. ( 6 p.m. Saturday, July 19, The Beacham, $27.50-$78)
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Fast Preacher, Katara, 1blackfrend: This free Tuffy’s show is a standout showcase of pan-Florida talent that’s varied, under the radar and, most importantly, good. Fast Preacher is the buttery indie-psych-soul-funk project of gifted Orlando artist Daniel Hanson. Katara are an intriguing and unlikely Tampa Bay fusion duo who dare to prove that harp music and funky grooves are not as mutually exclusive as they look on paper. 1blackfrend are a Jacksonville trio who inject a big jolt of real soul and grit into indie rock. Together, they’re a musical cross section that shows Florida can still be a place for bright, colorful and diverse voices. (9 p.m. Saturday, July 19, Tuffy’s Music Box, free)
Cube, Hen House, Black Magic M66, Shania Pain, DJ Jungle Jim: After being debased by a generation of commercial hacks going back to the 1990s, OG rave-era dance music has been slowly regaining its street cred in recent years for maybe the first time since its original warehouse days. No-rave artists like NYC’s Cube — who takes drum & bass down dark alleys where it collides with industrial and noise music — prove its new currency even in the experimental underground. Also featured are Oakland’s Hen House, a group that uses industrial and noise to craft a harrowing dungeon where only dark things occur, and Gainesville’s Black Magic M66, who specializes in lo-fi EBM. Completing the bill are an Orlando corps of eminent experimentalists in both music and film including outsider techno act Shania Pain, DJ Jungle Jim and visuals by Flamin’ Hot Tim Dukes. Films on 16mm
We might be forgetting one or two but it’s been a fair minute since Will’s Pub has hosted film screenings … maybe going back to an early run of Uncomfortable Brunch. Some dedicated film fiends are bringing it back-ish with a weeknight tribute to the work of experimental filmmaker Tomonari Nishikawa. Nishikawa, who passed away in April at 56, created evocative and abstract works on 16mm and 35mm film. In the same way that an experimental musician uses the studio as an instrument, Nishikawa would tinker with the actual film reels: scratching frames, using mattes and multiple exposures, and doing plenty of darkroom alchemy. Nishikawa’s short films will be presented “in dialogue” with films by colleagues and friends Julie Murray, Scott Stark and Mike Stoltz. Lend your third eye particularly to the work of native Central Floridian Stoltz, who also achieved underground acclaim as a member of the Reactionary 3 (eternal RIP to R3 member and zine author supreme Travis Fristoe). Organizers tell us that sound was a major factor in which works were chosen, so expect it to be 1980s TDK commercial-loud courtesy of Will’s PA. 7 p.m., Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Natalie Cuomo and Dan LaMorte
Stand-up comics and couple Natalie Cuomo and Dan LaMorte mix business and pleasure this week with their co-headliner at The Abbey. Best known for her comedy album Shut Up You Loved It, which debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes comedy charts, and recognition as a finalist for “New York’s Funniest” in the New York Comedy Festival in 2024, Cuomo’s comedic style is bold and honest. Her numerous tattoos have a comedic presence in themselves — making their way
into her stand-up and landing her appearances on Ink Master: No More Ink! and Inked Magazine LaMorte, a former college baseball player who was forced into early retirement due to a career-ending injury, has been in the comedy scene for more than 10 years. Known for his two comedy albums, Not Enough Pieces and Infect Me Once, and for being named one of the “New Faces” at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in 2024, LaMorte’s material ranges from his experiences being on the spectrum and losing 185 pounds after a fatty liver disease diagnosis at 23. The couple will each perform their own individual set, then close the show as a duo. How’s that for marital bliss? 9 p.m., The Abbey, 100 S. The creative minds behind the How Bazar Market in Gainesville are bringing their sights, sounds and wares to Casselberry for a one-night-only satellite event, Bazar À La Carte, as part of an ongoing Florida roadshow. The night market fuses whimsy and DIY artistry, including over 40 vendors, caricature artists, zine-making workshops, a photobooth, DJs, a picnic (complete with a 40-foot blanket) and an R&B afterparty at Sessions with Orlando House Party. The goal is to both spotlight and connect local and regional creatives, and link communities. “À La Carte is a platform that aims to bring communities together in order to create and legitimize a local alternative economy, so people are not just buying their candles from Walmart and Amazon,” says Bazar co-owner Jahi Khalfani. So come get utopian, and score some unique finds in the process. 6 p.m., Casselberry Art House, 127 Quail Pond Circle, Casselberry, thehowbazar.com, free. — MM
SATURDAY, JULY 19
Mates of State
Much-loved indie-pop duo Mates of State are out on the road and playing Orlando this weekend — which should induce a cardigan-waving frenzy. Mates, the long-running musical and life tandem of Kori and Jason Gardner (take that, Fleetwood Mac curse!) have been relatively quiet on the recording front as of late — with only last year’s single, “Somewhere,” released in the last decade — but it hasn’t dampened fans’ ardor. Since the late 1990s indie-rock heyday, the couple have released seven sweet albums and played anywhere and everywhere with playful and openhearted charm to spare. The Mates have promised to report for duty and release a new album this year, so expect some new songs at this show mayhaps. 6 p.m., The Social, 54 N. Orange Ave., foundation-presents.com, $22. — MM

splash in the pop mainstream in 2020 when her Latin-tinged indie-pop gem “Tú” ended up on no less than Barack Obama’s summer playlist. The singer-songwriter has at last delivered on “Tú”’s initial hype with the recent release of debut album Música Para Abrir El Cielo. It’s a heart-stop-
ping and ethereal hybrid of dream-pop with bossa nova flavors that we can’t get enough of. Live, we hope she goes full My Bloody Valentine and makes our ears literally bleed as we swoon. 6 p.m., The Social, 54 N. Orange Ave., foundation-presents.com, $20. — MM

Meet Pebbles!
Pebbles (A572968) has been with us for almost two months. He was found in an abandoned home with another dog, and no trace of their owners. He’s an incredibly sweet dog, stout and muscular, goofy and playful, and absolutely loves to play tug of war. It’s clear Pebbles was an active dog in his home, because the stillness of kennel life has been hard on him. He has begun to show frustration in his kennel, chewing on his bed and on the metal divider. Locked inside he looks like anxious and nervous, pacing, chewing and sometimes pawing at the kennel door to go outside.
Once outside, a complete change comes over Pebbles. Immediately he turns into a puppy, and the entire world is his playground. He will bring over toys for us to chase him. He will paw and headbutt for petting and affection. And he will curl up in a sunny spot next to staff or volunteers, just enjoying the sun, the smells, the freedom. Pebbles is 4 years old and 45 pounds, short and low to the ground, which gives him an adorable look. We know in a home where he is walked, exercised, and loved, he will flourish. Pebbles genuinely loves people, and seems to enjoy the company of other dogs. We have no idea why he hasn’t been adopted yet, because one session of yard time with him is enough to fall in love. We don’t want his frustration to get worse, because that huge heart deserves so much more.
