Orlando Sentinel journalists join newsroom-spanning strike in protest of ‘vulture fund’ owners

Orlando Sentinel journalists, designers and production workers last Thursday joined union members across seven newsrooms in a 24-hour strike against their parent company, hedge fund Alden Global Capital. Nearly two dozen Sentinel workers (along with hundreds of others at Tribune Publishing newsrooms across the country) staged a walkout at Gaston Edwards Park in protest of the company’s refusal to deliver fair wages, threat to rescind its 401(k) match benefit, and failure to address racial and gender pay disparities. The strike represents the largest collective action against the so-called “vulture capitalist” hedge fund Alden Global Capital since it purchased Tribune Publishing in 2021 — a deal that saddled Tribune with $278 million in debt. The Orlando Sentinel Guild, affiliated with the Communications Workers of America, was formed in February 2020 when the newsroom employed more than 50 reporters. Now, with the newsroom down to 32 people, the Guild is still trying to secure a contract nearly four years later. “What we’re having to do now, with so little staff, is choose which stories are more important to cover,” Amanda Rabines, a breaking news reporter, told Orlando Weekly. “It’s not fair to community members who make Central Florida the great place it is to live in and not have a robust newsroom. We think it’s an essential part of democracy.”

Disney quickly launches appeal after judge dismisses its lawsuit against DeSantis

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts last Thursday quickly launched an appeal after a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit alleging the state unconstitutionally retaliated against the company over its opposition to an education law. The filing came after U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor on Wednesday issued a 17-page ruling that dismissed the lawsuit. Disney has alleged that the state violated its First Amendment rights by retaliating after company officials in 2022 expressed opposition to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law. The legal fight has focused heavily on a decision last year by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Republican-controlled Legislature to replace the former Reedy Creek Improvement District with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. The decades-old Reedy Creek district was closely aligned with Disney, while DeSantis appointed the new district’s board. In his dismissal, Winsor cited legal precedents preventing First Amendment retaliation claims against “facially constitutional” laws. He said disputed laws do not mention Disney and that their effects would go beyond Disney.

from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, run by Dave Kerner, a political appointee of Gov. Ron DeSantis. The move was announced in a memo last week asserting that a person’s gender “is determined by innate and immutable biological and genetic characteristics.” The agency memo reads, “Permitting an individual to alter his or her license to reflect an internal sense of gender role or identity, which is neither immutable or objectively verifiable, undermines the purpose of an identification record and can frustrate the state’s ability to enforce its laws.” Civil rights and advocacy organizations said they are considering how to contest the new rules. The announcement came five days after DeSantis suspended his campaign for president.

Federal judge sides with DeSantis, tosses pro-Palestinian student groups’ lawsuits

A federal judge ruled last week against chapters of pro-Palestinian college student groups in Florida, backing the DeSantis administration and leaving the door open to possible action against the groups — although that appears unlikely. U.S. District Judge Mark Walker denied a request for a preliminary injunction by chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of Florida and the University of South Florida that would have protected the groups. The judge separately threw out lawsuits the groups had filed against Gov. Ron DeSantis asserting that his administration’s efforts to deactivate the chapters were unconstitutional. Walker wrote in his decision that deactivation or criminal investigation of the chapters was not imminent. He recognized the fear the student groups said they felt, but because the groups are still standing, he said, the groups’ threat of injury was only speculative. The lawsuits stemmed from an Oct. 24 memorandum from Ray Rodrigues, chancellor of the State University System, instructing that the University of Florida and University of South Florida “must” deactivate the student groups at both schools after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that killed about 1,200 Israelis and resulted in more than 200 being taken hostage.

Parents group calls on Disney to rescind support for proposed child labor rollbacks

Speaking of Disney, a group of parents, MomsRising, called on the theme park giant last week to rescind its support for Florida bills that would roll back child labor protections for older teenagers, if passed. Walt Disney World, based in Orlando, is the state’s largest employer and a prominent member of the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association, an industry trade group that has argued in favor of the legislation. The FRLA, which also represents industry giants like Universal Orlando and the parent companies of chains like McDonald’s and Olive Garden, has argued the legislation filed for Florida’s 2024 legislative session (HB 49/SB 1596) would help employers in the largely lowwage, non-union hospitality and tourism industries address ongoing labor shortages and give young workers the “flexibility” to work longer hours than currently legally permitted. But MomsRising (and its 60,000 members in Florida) isn’t having it. “Moms and families are Disney’s core customers, and we strongly support the child labor laws that protect children’s health, workplace welfare and education,” a spokesperson for the group shared. “We are sending a message to Disney, all FRLA members and Florida lawmakers that we oppose child labor and oppose passage of these bills.” Disney did not return Orlando Weekly’s request for comment on this story. The Florida House voted to pass HB 49 on Thursday in a 80-35 vote largely along party lines; only GOP Rep. Mike Beltran joined Democrats in opposition. The Senate version, SB 1596, is still making its way through the state Senate.

‘LIKE A PUNCH IN THE GUT’

Volusia County teachers union calls out school board for union-busting behavior BY MCKENNA S CH UEL ER

V

olusia Educators United, the labor union covering educational staff in Volusia County’s public schools, has accused the school board of seeking to undermine the union through a disagreement over the union’s compliance with state law. A third-party attorney hired by the Volusia County school board wrote a letter to the state’s Public Employees Relations Commission (PERC) last month, alleging the union had failed to comply with a controversial law passed last year that requires public sector unions (with politically convenient exceptions) to report certain information to the state annually. Under the new law, public sector unions — save for those representing firefighters, cops and corrections officers, unions that reliably contribute to GOP campaigns — are required to have a dues-paying membership of at least 60% of employees that the union represents. Unions are then required to report their membership numbers, and other financial information, to the state annually. Under Florida’s right-to-work law, public employees aren’t required to pay union dues in order to reap the benefits of a union contract that covers their job. So, reaching a 60% threshold (i.e., convincing workers to voluntarily support their union financially) can, in Florida and other right-to-work states, be a challenge. Elizabeth Albert, president of Volusia United Educators in Daytona Beach, told Orlando Weekly that her union submitted the required information (including membership numbers) to the state in October 2023, using guidance the union had received from PERC, the state agency tasked with implementing last year’s law. “We stand on telling the truth,” she asserted. The Volusia County school board, however, has cast doubt on the union’s calculation. A private attorney, writing on behalf of the school board, sent a formal notice to PERC on Jan. 18, insinuating that the union had falsified information, specifically to make it appear as though they had surpassed the required 60% membership threshold. “The board did not take a legal position, but merely notified PERC that the union representations did not appear to meet statutory density

requirements by the recertification deadline,” a spokesperson for Volusia County Schools told Orlando Weekly in a statement. Albert believes this interference was unnecessary and described the board’s move as “disappointing” and “malicious.” According to public records, the union reported 62% membership density in October for the union’s instructional bargaining unit in a recertification form submitted to PERC, and about 42% membership density for their non-instructional bargaining unit (representing educational support staff and office specialists). All in all, that totals about 3,400 dues-paying members for the school district. Based on numbers the union shared in a monthly newsletter for its members, however, the school board believes that the information submitted to PERC is inaccurate. Membership information shared by the union in its August “Solidarity Report” — two months before the union submitted their numbers to PERC — showed the union hadn’t yet reached the 60% membership threshold for either of its bargaining units. The instructional bargaining unit had about 52% density, while the support staff unit hovered a bit below 30% density. Albert, the union president, told Orlando Weekly that the union’s membership is fluid.“We are constantly adding members and sometimes removing them,” she said. As of Friday morning, she noted, the union had eight new members in their system waiting to be processed. “No one is forced to join or remain.” The August newsletter, reviewed by Orlando Weekly, also noted that there were 216 additional union members at the time who were still in the process of converting to the union’s new system for paying member dues — a necessity borne out of last year’s law. The state law passed last year — like similar anti-union policies enacted in states like Kentucky and Arkansas — prohibited a decadesold practice of allowing union members to have their union dues deducted automatically from their paychecks. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described this payroll deduction ban as “paycheck protection” (borrowing the phrase from the American

[ news + views ] Legislative Exchange Council, a right-wing think tank that pushes for similar policies across the country). Florida union members, including self-described conservatives, last year decried it as a nuisance and an attack on their freedom to pay their dues as they wished. Albert says the union, nonetheless, has worked to remain in compliance with the law, and was shocked by the school board’s decision to contact the state. “The [board] has inserted themselves in the process unnecessarily, and we believe that not only is it inappropriate, but it is mean-spirited and [done] in an attempt to potentially decertify our union.” Albert says the union always strives to operate from a place of truth and integrity, both internally with members and externally with the district and school board. Lying to the state about their membership numbers, she added, wouldn’t be in the union’s best interest, and is antithetical to what the union stands for.“It wouldn’t benefit us to falsify any information, when we could just, instead of taking one road, take another road.” This other road she’s referring to is what happens if a union’s membership does fall below 60%. If that happens, the union isn’t automatically decertified. Union members don’t automatically lose their contract, which — for teachers — can contain things such as scheduled pay raises, duty-free lunch time and dedicated time for lesson planning. What happens instead is that unions must file a new petition with PERC to represent its members. At least 30% of eligible employees must sign cards confirming that they want the union. Then, an election takes place. If a simple majority of workers vote in favor of union representation — 50% + 1 vote — the union stays. If 50% or fewer vote in favor, then the union is decertified. The state’s largest teachers union — the United Teachers of Dade — is currently in the midst of this process, after just barely failing to meet its 60% threshold. A spokesperson for the Florida Education Association, the parent union of most local education unions around the state, told Orlando Weekly last month that at least 21 other education unions in Florida are in a similar boat. Last month, Albert publicly called out the five-member Volusia County school board at a Jan. 23 school board meeting for going to the state without coming to her first. “The Volusia County School Board have taken it upon yourselves to lobby unfounded attacks on the members of VUE [Volusia United Educators] for no reason other than to stoke suspicion where there is none,” Albert told board members. The reason for this “attack,”she continued, was “to make sure that teachers and support staff no longer have a voice, that we no longer have contractual rights and that we no longer have the ability to fight for better pay benefits and working conditions.” Karen Weinrich, an elementary school teacher for Volusia County Schools, told board members that she and many of her fellow teachers make a conscious choice to be dues-paying

union members. “Why? It’s because we want our schools to be better,” said Weinrich, who sits on the union’s executive board. “We are here for our students. And as a union, it gives us a voice.” Learning of the board’s decision to contact the state, to cast doubt on their union’s integrity, she said, “felt like a punch in the gut.” Albert told Orlando Weekly that she tried to contact board members to ask after their accusation of noncompliance, but that no one returned her calls or emails. Even worse, two of the school board members, she said, were former card-carrying union members themselves and had been endorsed by the union for elected office. (Albert politely declined to call them out by name.) Historically, the union has had a “collaborative” relationship with the school district and the school board, according to Albert. “The relationship has been mutually beneficial.” But casting doubt on their union by filing a public notice with the state, she said, feels like an “intentional” and “strategic” move to undermine them. Since the law took effect in July, the process for determining how unions should count and report their membership totals to the state has shifted through PERC’s rulemaking process, which occurred over the course of several months. The school board has accused the union of using a misleading method to calculate its membership totals. Albert maintains that the union used guidance documents provided by PERC at the time of their recertification due date in October. It’s been a confusing affair for all involved, including for the firefighter and cop unions that were supposed to be exempted from most of the law’s most stringent regulations. The law’s primary champions (or bill sponsors) have sponsored new legislation this year to try and address the vague directives in last year’s bill. Meanwhile, as this drama unfolds, Albert says Volusia County Schools continues to face an ongoing teacher shortage — an issue that is unlikely to get better if the union is decertified and the teachers’ contract is lost. As of Saturday, Feb. 3, Volusia County Schools had 115 instructional vacancies — a number that Albert said is unusually high for this time of year. The school district also faces other issues, such as salary compression for longtime teachers, disruptive student behavior in classrooms, and ongoing logistical troubles associated with a 2021 U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit over the district’s treatment of students with disabilities. There are also general workplace concerns. Weinrich told board members at the Jan. 23 meeting that her classroom’s air conditioner hasn’t worked since August. “The board would be better served working with us collaboratively, to hear the concerns that the employees have, and work with us to make improvements,” said Albert. “But instead of working collaboratively with our union, they are attempting to take away the ability of the employees to belong to our union.” mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

GET KNOCKED DOWN. GET UP AGAIN.

To beat repeated developer assaults, community activists Save Orange County had to be persistent. Winners of the latest war over the Econlockhatchee River share their lessons for taking on powerful and well-funded opponents BY C RAIG PITTMAN , F LO RIDA PH O EN IX

B

ecause my kids love superhero movies, I’ve seen a lot of them. One of my favorites is an animated one, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, which features Spiderpeople from various universes, including a teen girl, a ’40s noir detective, and “Spider-Ham” (aka Peter Porker). One of the things all these Spideys claim to have in common: No matter how many times they’re knocked down, they always get back up. I had never thought of “dogged persistence” as a superpower. If that’s true, though, then add the group Save Orange County to the pantheon of Marvel-ous

modern superheroes. The Central Florida organization has had to repeatedly fight off developer assaults on its rural eastern Orange community adjacent to the Econlockhatchee River. “This has been an ongoing battle,” said Kelly Semrad, who’s been in the thick of it ever since she and her husband bought their home in the rural area in 2013. They were hoping for a quiet place to raise their kids outside Orlando’s hustle-bustle. The quiet didn’t last. “We closed on Friday the 13th,” she said.“I feel like that day jinxed us.” Signs went up the next day advertising a developer’s proposal for a change in the area’s zoning,

she told me. The battles to keep it rural have raged nearly nonstop ever since. “We’re passionate,”she said of the friends she’s made among her neighbors.“We’re relentless to protect it.” The most recent fight climaxed last week with a county commission hearing that drew hundreds, lasted nearly six hours, and resulted in a suspenseful split vote at 1 a.m. Their opponent for this round has been a Texas-based company named Columnar Holdings LLC that 10 years ago spent $15.5 million to buy a chunk of a 100-year-old ranch. It has been trying ever since to change the zoning

to a higher density than one home per 10 acres. Columnar’s latest development carried a ridiculous moniker, “Sustanee.” It’s supposed to imply that this is an environmentally friendly “sustainable” development when clearly it’s not. It’s as if some sneering supervillain like the Green Goblin insisted on being called “Mr. Sweeteepie.” With Sustanee, Columnar promised to create “a unique, environmentally-focused, nature-oriented learning community of single-family homes designed to create a deep connection between people and nature by providing for walkability within a natural setting and celebrating sustainable practices.” The bottom line, though, is that “Sustanee” would plop down about 1,800 cookie-cutter houses in an area that’s been zoned for low-density rural living, not urban sprawl. Sure, they promised nature trails and open space too, but that was just putting lipstick on the Spider-Ham. “They’d be building urban density into a rural area without any urban services,” Semrad, an associate professor at the University of Central Florida, told me. “No sidewalks. No increase in fire and police protection. No extra schools. That would all be left for the taxpayers to pay for.” At the conclusion of that six-hour meeting, Save Orange County won by a single vote. The county commissioners decided 4-3 to tell Sustanee sayonara. While they were victorious this time, Semrad said, “People should not have to fight so hard to protect the rural community that the county promised to save.” There are fights a lot like this going on all over the state these days. Developers, aided by a governor and Legislature foolishly eager to accommodate their campaign contributors, are doing their best to knock down local opposition any way they can. So what, I wondered, was the secret to Save Orange County’s superpowered success?

River of mounds

The Econ River, as most locals call it, is a tributary of the St. Johns River. It’s “one of the last unspoiled rivers in Central Florida,” according to the canoe-and-kayak-crazy folks at Paddle Florida. The name means “river of mounds” referring to the numerous Native American burial mounds built along its banks. That should tell you a lot about how pristine it is. So should the fact that the official state map says paddlers are likely to see “sandhill cranes, bald eagles, ospreys, hawks, wading birds, wood storks, roseate spoonbills, waterfowl, shorebirds, deer, turkey, and sometimes black bear.” “The county promised not to cross the Econ River with urban development,”Semrad told me. Yet as far back as 2002, developers began “quietly putting together a plan to create a city-sized development on the Econ River’s eastern banks — the side Orange County officials have pledged [continued on page 13]

[ news + views ] The smart money was on the white, experienced incumbent to romp to victory over the first-time, biracial candidate. “He outraised her,” Semrad told me. “But she beat him.” And when Sustanee came up, she voted against it.

Where the decisions are made

should remain rural,” the Orlando Sentinel reported 22 years ago. The paper said the plans called for “a sprawling business park, a small airfield, a hotel-conference center, homes, apartments, two schools, and commercial outlets onto 2,000 acres of environmentally fragile land” that up until then had been part of the Rolling R Ranch. That project never came to be. It was the first of many failed attempts at converting the ranchland of the Rolling R into a sea of concrete — a string that has continued through last week’s vote on Sustanee. It included another iteration named “Sustany” (note the “y” instead of the double-e). At the urging of Save Orange County, commissioners rejected that one in 2016. You may have heard that the University of Florida put out a report recently warning that we’re likely to lose 2.2 million acres of Florida farmland by 2070. Rolling R is Exhibit A for what’s been happening. To stop this trend, “Florida must work to further effective public policy, planning, and land management strategies to ensure that agriculture and its many values can flourish over the coming decades,” the report said. Instead, our elected officials have seemed eager to push out the farmers and ranchers in favor of the development industry — no matter what the impact may be on our economy and our ability to feed ourselves.

‘They have not turned any dirt’

Save Orange’s battle against some other plans for altering eastern Orange County didn’t turn out as well for the keep-it-rural advocates. For instance, in the case of a proposed 2,000home development called “The Grow” (I will pause here for all your rolling eyeballs to come to a standstill), the county commission voted 4-3 to approve it in 2016. Maybe a better name would have been “The

Blow,” because that’s what it felt like for the Save Orange folks — a body blow that knocked them for a loop. But they got back up, as resilient as the British band Chumbawumba in their hit “Tubthumping”: “I get knocked down, but I get up again / You’re never gonna keep me down.” Opponents of the zoning change raised $200,000 to pay for battling the decision in court, Semrad said. They took their case to a judge in the state Division of Administrative Hearings. In 2018, she ruled for the residents, saying the county had improperly approved an urban project in a rural area. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t be the last word. In 2019, then-Gov. Rick “I Love the Smell of Bulldozers in the Morning” Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, and Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis reversed the judge’s decision. They concluded the county could interpret its own growth rules any way it wanted. Apparently, it didn’t matter what the county’s zoning had promised to all the people who’d bought their property in an area that was supposed to stay rural. I think it speaks volumes about the developer of The Grow that he then hired as his builder Pulte Homes. That’s the same company that pleaded guilty to 22 counts of illegally destroying gopher tortoise burrows in Marion County. While they lost that one, Semrad said, they had persuaded the county to include so many conditions that the development had to meet that so far, “they have not turned any dirt.” Meanwhile, the Save Orange County folks took aim at the source of their defeat. Their own county commissioner, a real estate lawyer named Ted Edwards, had voted to approve the project, despite what his constituents wanted. Obviously, the voters needed an alternative who’d defend the zoning code. A co-founder of Save Orange County named Emily Bonilla, who works as a career adviser at Full Sail University, ran against Edwards.

I called up Commissioner Bonilla, who verified the story of how her candidacy in 2016 was inspired by Edwards’ wrong-headed support of The Grow. She also verified that Edwards’ campaign raised far more money than she did. “I think I raised about $28,000 and he raised $350,000,” she said. Much of her opponent’s money came from the development community, she said. Yet she won the most votes. When she ran for reelection in 2020,“I still had developers coming after me,” she said. They again backed a pro-development candidate and, again, he collected far more money than she did. Yet once again, her well-known determination to protect eastern Orange County from sprawl helped her draw more votes. Being on the inside instead of the outside has shown her what the average citizen doesn’t know, she told me. All the talk of transparent decision-making is just that — talk. When I asked what she meant, she told me this story: One evening, as she was driving to a meeting, she got stuck at a loooong red light. She happened to glance over and see a developer she knew who was sitting outside a bar. Sitting with him was a recently retired county employee who had been instrumental in the county’s negotiations with that developer. When the retiree spotted her looking his way, he walked over to say hello. “I thought you’d retired,” she told him. “Oh, I’m a consultant now,” he replied. Then he explained to her, “This is where the decisions are made.” “Someone had been telling me about how people on the county staff support developers so when they retire, they all get cushy jobs, and I said, ‘No, I don’t believe that,’” Bonilla told me. What she saw that day showed she was wrong, she said, and added, “I guess I am just too naive.”

The best plan

Semrad told me her organization is not opposed to all development, just projects that don’t comply with the current agricultural zoning. If Sustanee’s design had complied, they probably would not have objected. Further complicating the situation, she said, is that the owners of Sustanee allowed a company called Ag Carbon Solutions to run an illegal disposal pit on the property. The pit, which takes in truckloads of yard waste, has become a source of contamination for local wells and the Econ River, she said. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection told the owners and operators of the pit last year that they had been violating the

law since 2020. A DEP inspection report I saw said that the company is “storing and disposing of off-site yard trash in a manner which violates multiple provisions of” the state’s rules. So far, they haven’t stopped, Semrad said. Curious about what might happen next to sustain Sustanee’s plans, I called up Sean Froelich, one of the partners in Columnar. “We haven’t made any decisions,” he told me. “Obviously we didn’t get what we wanted from the county commission.” I asked if there was anything his firm could have done differently that would have produced a different outcome. “No,” he said.“I think we put together the best plan we could have.” I didn’t tell him this, because my mama raised me to be polite, but I think the best plan would have been to comply with the current zoning.

Attack from every angle

I asked Semrad and Bonilla what they would tell the folks in other parts of the state seeking advice. Here’s what they said, plus a few of my own conclusions: • Use the talents of your neighbors. Bonilla had expertise in marketing, for instance, while other Save Orange County board members were versed in biology and other fields that became important to opposing any zoning changes. • Attack from every angle. Save Orange County used everything from social media to Change.org petitions to door-to-door campaigns to spread the word about their crusade to stay rural. • Don’t expect the paid government staff to take your side. They have likely been holding closed-door meetings with the developer and his or her consultants — who are probably former government employees. • Weigh down your opponent. Even on that one project where they lost, they persuaded county officials to impose a host of conditions that has slowed construction. • Point out how the development will damage existing homeowners. For instance, filling in wetlands is likely to send the water that the wetlands once absorbed cascading onto adjacent properties. • Be sure you vote for candidates who share your vision of the area’s future.

When their own commissioner betrayed them, people voted for Bonilla. •

Be prepared to put yourself on the line.

Bonilla, after two terms as commissioner, is not allowed to run again. As a result, Semrad is now a candidate for her seat on the county commission. I don’t know for sure, but judging by the past elections, Semrad will draw a well-financed opponent backed by development interests. I bet he calls himself “Mr. Sweeteepie.” feedback@orlandoweekly.com

broken on the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, the final major component of Orlando’s crown-jewel complex finally clicked into place with last week’s official debut of Judson’s Live. The 150-seat club attached to the backside of Steinmetz Hall might be the smallest venue in the building, but after touring the space at the Jan. 31 ribbon-cutting ceremony, and then attending its grand opening concert on Feb. 2, I think this intimate gem might make a big impact on how locals like myself think about the Dr. Phillips Center. From its initial conception almost two decades ago, all the way through its multi-phase development — which was delayed first by the 2008 financial crisis, and then by the COVID-19 pandemic — I’ve been skeptical about its impact on our grassroots arts community. (I partially

inherited this attitude from late Orlando Weekly columnist Billy Manes, who followed the money in a series of stories.) The keystone 2,700-seat Walt Disney Theater turned out to be a wonderful place for deep-pocketed Broadway touring companies to park their wagons, but is largely out of reach for even our largest homegrown companies. Similarly, while I’ve enjoyed excellent productions from professional local troupes in the 300-seat Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, it hasn’t lived up to its initial billing as a community stage accessible to emerging artists. And despite the “acoustically perfect” accolades heaped upon the 1,700-seat Steinmetz Hall, I’ve found the venue less than ideal for any shows involving electric amplification, or lessthan-silent audience members. The building might be an architectural marvel (as well as a valuable marketing tool for developers hawking nearby high-rises and hotels) but I’ve remained largely unswayed in my long-expressed opinion that the greater good would have been better served by building a dozen low-cost “black box” stages, for a fraction of the Dr. Phil’s expense.

Given that backstory, it should come as no surprise that I went into the celebrations for Judson’s Live with modest expectations — particularly since I also have a reflexive antipathy to arts venues being named in honor of financial donors rather than creatives. But then I listened to Joyce T. Green talk about her late husband, Judson, a former Disney Parks president and CFO of the Walt Disney Co., for whom “business was his vocation, but his avocation was jazz and composing.” Starting out on the piano at age 4 and playing with big bands in the Midwest through college, Judson wrote countless songs and recorded multiple albums as a side gig to his C-suite corporate career, which also included stints on the boards of DreamWorks Animation and Harley-Davidson. Joyce recalls he was “particularly fascinated with jazz, because of its history of being born in America and the necessity for spontaneous creativity through improvisation.” Given that, it feels more than fitting that the Dr. Phillips Center’s last and perhaps best venue not only has Judson Green’s name above the door; it literally has his handprints on it,

preserved beneath a transparent floor slab on a cement marker bearing the originally announced moniker, “The Green Room.” Better still, while Wynton Marsalis and his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (whose Dizzy’s Club in New York City was a major inspiration for Judson’s Live) will play sold-out shows here on Feb. 8 and 9, the opening night honors went to Green himself. Saxophonist Daniel Jordan, who played with Judson for 30 years, led their Eighth Element ensemble through a setlist almost exclusively composed of Green’s original tunes, with a musical lineup featuring Green’s grandsons Jack and Jacob alongside drummer Walt Hubbard and internationally renowned vocalist Michelle Mailhot. His recordings might not displace Dave Brubeck’s in my personal collection, but judging by this tribute concert Green was no mere dilettante at songwriting, and the stunningly sophisticated venue named after him is likewise far from a vanity project. In fact, after a few minutes sitting atop a well-padded swivel seat along the wonderful whisky-focused bar, soaking in the warmly wood-paneled atmosphere and sipping on a silky seasonal old-fashioned, my cynicism started to soften. And by the time samples of the menu arrived — including hearty charcuterie, delicate tuna tartare and decadent chocolate waffles — it had melted away like the unctuous pork belly bites. I may have entered Judson’s Live anticipating another aesthetic temple for the elites that I could never attend if I weren’t invited as a critic, but I exited feeling like I’d found the first venue at the Dr. Phillips where I could be fully at home. CEO Kathy Ramsberger emphasized that, despite its jazz-forward opening lineup, future programming will cover many genres and appeal to a diverse demographic. And since admission starts around $30 (tickets are available for single patrons), with craft cocktails costing $16-$18 and food running $11-$22, I could enjoy an upscale evening here without completely breaking the bank. Maybe the best compliment I can offer Judson’s Live is saying that Orlando’s newest venue doesn’t feel like part of Orlando at all, but a little slice of NYC. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

The opening of Chuan Fu, sister restaurant to Mills 50’s Chuan Lu, means Winter Park now has a proper Sichuan eatery | Photos by Rob Bartlett

FU FOR THOUGHT

CHUAN FU

New Winter Park house of Sichuan cuisine Chuan Fu is a mecca for mala junkies BY FA IYAZ KARA

‘T

here really aren’t any good Chinese restaurants in Winter Park,” Joyce Cai said to me last March as rationale to bring her Sichuan restaurant, Chuan Fu, into the Ravaudage complex. The provocative declaration was made in a swaggering, shot-calling sort of moment, but seven months later, the undaunted restaurateur lent the city a stylish, modern counterpart to Mills 50’s Chuan Lu Garden. There are now Japandi flourishes here and splashes of Hollywood Regency there in the old Orlando Meats space, but the dishes at Chuan Fu (translation:“Sichuan House”) are pure glam. In my half-dozen or so visits to this licker-tickling mecca for peppercorn junkies, I’ve joyfully burned through my wallet and a good portion of my intestines gorging on Sichuan classics like liang fen ($8.99), jelly noodle blocks made from mung bean starch slathered in chili sauce, and sliced beef and ox tongue ($12.99), a dish that’s served cold but is hot to its core. “This must be what eating firecrackers is like,” says a woman to her companion within earshot of my table. She’s apprehensively

chop-sticking la zi chicken ($16.99), the classic from Chongqing that’s sometimes referred to as “firecracker chicken,” into her gob. The brazen tossing of dried red chilies, aromatics, peanuts and, of course, Sichuan peppercorns is identical to the version served at Chuan Lu Garden and is a must-order for the initiated and uninitiated alike. Another Chongqing specialty, fried wheat noodles gleaming in chili oil and stained with a powder of crushed peppercorns and a soy-based sauce ($15.99; $11.99 lunch portion), is often eaten for breakfast in the city of 30 million people. For me, it’s become a lunchtime favorite. “All the sauces are house-made ‘special sauces,’”Cai says.“The way to make each sauce is not fixed but is left to the preference of each chef, who can use up to 20 ingredients to produce the sauces. Chefs love to show their creative side by making their sauces unique.” This approach, evidently, also applies to Chuan Fu’s broths. I’ve had an igniting bowl of shuizhu beef with hot chili oil at Chuan Lu Garden, and a bowl of shuizhu fish with hot chili oil ($21.99) at Chuan Fu. The differences aren’t

stark — the deep-crimson broth appeared a bit thicker at Chuan Fu than at Chuan Lu, but I’m ordering both every time no matter what. Plus, it’s ideal for sharing, which is something I didn’t do when burying my face in a bowl of “rattan pepper sliced fatty beef” ($22.99). The pliant chew of the boiled beef was a bit of a revelation, but the lake of fire in this bowl burned in the most wicked way. Tien tsin peppers and chopped jalapeños lit the flame, while rattan pepper — which are green Sichuan peppercorns — stoked it. The wee little mines have an even greater tongue-numbing effect than their mature counterparts. When I finished the soupy dish all in one sitting, I felt like I had just licked a frozen pole. But to reduce Sichuan cuisine solely to its infernal, numbing, mala-induced effects would be to undervalue one of China’s great cuisines. Chuan Fu’s crispy, marrow-filled pork knuckle ($26.99) and crispy duck ($28.99), for example, embody the very essence of xian, the Chinese equivalent of umami. And while both knuck and duck were served with sweet chili sauce and crushed red pepper, neither were necessary

for a proper enjoyable gnaw. The broth in the stewed beef brisket with tomato ($18.99) elicited the sort of grunts and whoops anyone conjugated for more than 10 years would appreciate. A tableside serving of sizzling beef ($18.99) came with a sauce that leaned toward the sweet (in a good way), while the lemon chicken ($16.99) came with a sauce that leaned toward the sweet (in a bad way) — this thing was like chicken candy, with a funnel cake vibe. At times, Chuan Fu can seem as harried and frenzied as the state fair, but servers pick up the pace and maintain their composure through it all. You may even have four people tending to your needs, as we did one evening. The server clearing our table suggested we end with “Sichuan brown sugar glutinous rice cake” ($9.99) before heading out. It was every bit the filling ending we’d thought it be and, yeah, we polished off all 10 sugary pieces to our surprise. No good Chinese restaurants in Winter Park? Well, not anymore. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Foxing will play thir first album in its entirety | Photo by Hayden Molinarolo

CRAZY LIKE A FOXING

FOXING with The Hotelier, Glitterer

Foxing celebrate a decade of The Albatross on the road BY TH O MAS CR O NE

A

s you read this, Foxing songwriter and vocalist Conor Murphy has just taken his band on a tour that’ll help them determine a long-term view of how they’ll approach both their work and their art. A tour that will take them to Orlando’s Beacham this week. But more on that in a moment. For starters, let’s note that Foxing is going into this tour with an interesting twist for fans. The Albatross, the band’s first of their four full-length releases, has turned 10 years of age and the band is playing all the songs off that album, supplementing those 30-odd minutes with a selection of tracks from their other albums. “We’ll be playing this front-to-back, then a collection of songs from the albums after that until right now,” said Murphy in a chat with OW right before the tour’s start. “A few of the songs on the [Albatross] album haven’t been played live in like eight years. And one or two have never played live, or maybe just once or twice.” Murphy said the band’s fans, a loyal lot, are probably just as excited, if not more, by the band’s deep dive into their earliest output. He’s aware that fans love the tracks they enjoyed throughout their 20s.

“I totally get that. I’m trying not to be a cranky, older musician, who at this point, is saying, ‘Why don’t people want to hear the new music?’” says Murphy. “I recognize that when I go to a show, I want to hear the songs that I know the words to as well.” Murphy adds that having fans that have lived with Foxing’s music for a decade makes the band’s approach to the songs an interesting experience for the band as they decide what new flourishes to add to the bones of the tracks. In doing so, he said he thinks fans will also be interested in “how somebody would treat these really small, nuanced parts of songs that you’ve enjoyed on record for the past 10 years.” Murphy has often taken a unique approach to bringing music to the fans. Though the band’s discography of four albums may not seem prolific as such, they have released a dozen singles and there’s always been a degree of creativity to Foxing’s output. For instance, in the summer of 2022, the group released Live at the Grandel, recorded at a theater of that name in the group’s hometown of St. Louis. Limited to a thousand vinyl copies, the album was released as a stylized video on YouTube soon thereafter. Even the 10th anniversary reissue of The

Albatross is getting a twist or two. The deluxe package includes covers of songs from emo bands that have come up in Foxing’s wake, including Insignificant Other and For Your Health. The album also includes rerecordings of “The Medic” and “Rory.” There’s a plan for what gets played this touring season. And the group members have reached a point in their career where a few sensible best practices have been put into place for road work. “Everyone’s gotten into a groove,” Murphy says. “We have expectations for each other and we’re at an age where we can go off and do our own things a bit. When we were younger, there’s this spirit where we’re all friends, going out on the road for weeks on end together. We’re still all really close friends, but we need time away from each other to do our own things. There were years when we were on the road more than we were home. But now we give each other space, the privacy to have some semblance of ourselves when we’re on the road.” But where they find kinship is in creating music — and Foxing is busy at work on a fifth album that should be ready for release next year. Though the band has changed lineups repeatedly over the years, the current crew — Murphy on

vocals, guitar, trumpet and sampler; Jon Hellwig playing drums and sampler; Eric Hudson taking on guitar and vocal duties; and Brett Torrence handling bass, synthesizer and sampler — are happy to create, now doing so at the studio of Ryan Wasoba, an ex-member of the acclaimed indie band So Many Dynamos. Combining efforts with Wasoba in Edwardsville, Illinois — across the Mississippi River from St. Louis — allows the band a chance to create whenever they wish. And their fifth album is coming together at a pace that should see a 2024 release. “I think we’ve gotten to this point in our writing and recording where we’re able to produce and record ourselves,” Murphy says. “It’s a really comfortable place. We’re able to demo ourselves and have combined our demo process with our recording process, to where an original idea could be on the final recording. We’re tried to do it that way on every one of the four albums.” And now Murphy and company are succeeding in doing exactly that. music@orlandoweekly.com

After solidifying their look and sound as an instru-metal wrecking crew with 2021’s Raw Demos LP, heavy Orlando trio Royal Graves are finally back with a new EP, Amen. Unlike Raw Demos, their latest is a properly mixed and mastered work. But beyond the improved production value, the new songs themselves are a remarkable leap for the band. On Amen, Royal Graves’ sludgy post-metal storm rages with an altogether new level of focus and finesse. First, the sonics are richer and more enveloping. Furthermore, the tighter texturizing highlights their deepening melodic dimension, which is more detailed, journeying and salient than ever. This is a band whose ambition now lies beyond pure tonnage. Don’t worry, headbangers. Royal Graves are still heavy as 10 hells with titanic riffs and mammoth steps. They’re just growing into something more now. Royal Graves reemerge here as a complex, Homeric beast closer to bands like Pelican, whose instrumentally narrative style paints entire worlds without words. This evolution is especially apt since Amen was birthed during extraordinary life struggles that gave guitarist Mark Linder so much to express that he even added some vocals to their usually all-instrumental tapestry. Most of Amen was written while Linder was living in a hospice facility providing round-theclock care for his father James. When James rested, Linder wrote and played on headphones, then sent those .wav files for drummer Michael Henderson’s input. Cancer ultimately took his father at the end of that year, and Amen is the phoenix that arose from Linder’s personal crucible. The emotional range of that experience — the heaviness, the toil, the deliverance — is all in these songs.

On new album Amen, Royal Graves’ sludgy post-metal storm rages with an altogether new level of focus and finesse. This is a band whose ambition now lies beyond pure tonnage

With the sweep and grandeur to match their sonic mass, Amen is Royal Graves’ most crafted and widescreen work to date, and it cements them as one of Orlando’s premiere post-metal acts. Amen now streams everywhere.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Punk Black showcase: Atlanta-based promoter Punk Black has been making waves by spotlighting artists of color since 2015. With local assistance by Melbourne arts mover Black Box Blackout, they’re venturing into the area just in time for punks around here to honor Black History Month their own way. Besides showcasing both sides of the state line, this prismatic bill showcases even more sides of punk. South Florida’s Hijas De La Muerte deliver punk rock with Latin and female perspectives, while Tampa Bay’s Dea & Saint take the punk spirit out to the experimental rap frontier. Georgia will rep with an Atlanta delegation featuring the bouncy pop-punk of Over Anna and

the bare-knuckle blend of punk and noise rock of Being Hvman. This will be a fuller, more colorful snapshot of punk rock in all its magnificent spectrum than you’ll see almost anywhere else. It’s what real representation looks like, and it’s well worth the short drive to the coast. (7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, Pineapples Moon Room, Melbourne, $10) Melrose Center Anniversary: As a working tech facility for creatives, the Melrose Center (inside the Orlando Public Library) is one of the city’s best artistic assets. Besides their educational service, though, the Melrose has also woven itself into the local arts fabric through its notable live programming. To mark its 10th anniversary, they’re holding an open house event that’ll celebrate that creative diversity. Breakout Orlando rapper-singer and Fake Four-signed artist E-Turn will drop one of her always-electrifying performances and debut some new material. Also featured is Second Saturday Improv Show, who will perform a musical that’s completely extemporaneous. It’ll be a full afternoon of highwire performance by noteworthy homegrown talents. (2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, Orlando Public Library, free) Andy Boay, Derek Dunn, Cheeto Haze: Though low-key, this show’s got big underground cred and deep Orlando ties. Andy Boay is the solo guise of Andy White from Tonstartssbandht, the homegrown brother act who’ve become national indie darlings. White’s solo material is no less otherworldly than Tonstartssbandht’s mystical psych-folk. Also featured will be local experimentalists Derek Dunn (Storage Music Unit, Aaron’s Home) and Cheeto Haze, as well as films by Malverde’s Jimmy Schaus. The Flying Luttenbachers

Underground music heads in Orlando have become very familiar with the guitar histrionics of Weasel Walter through his yearly visits as guitar foil to Lydia Lunch in Retrovirus. However, this particularly chaotic musical polymath made his name in the 1990s with a different ensemble: Chicago no-wave berserkers The Flying Luttenbachers. This was a band that drove the last nails into the coffin of the alternative ’90s with a feral mix of free jazz, grindcore and, yes, first-wave NYC no-wave. Led by Weasel with a revolving cast of musicians along for the freefall, this was not a band meant to last … but Weasel puts together new lineups whenever the fancy takes him. This time it’s for a few choice Florida shows with the near-equally seminal Shitstorm riding shotgun. And C0mputer is opening, natch! One for the maniacs and the maniacs only. 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, $20. — Matthew Moyer FRIDAY, FEB. 9

Paul Strickland

Whether you’re a longtime fan of frequent Orlando Fringe Critics’ Choice winner Paul Strickland — who was recently featured at the 2023 National Storytelling Festival — or a newcomer to his comedy-forward blend of folksy original music and absurdist monologues, you’ll find something fresh to make you fall out of your chair in his two completely different shows at ArtSpace this

week. On Wednesday, he’ll reprise some of his “Most Requested” greatest hits from his decade-plus run as a festival circuit favorite, including content from his acclaimed shows 90 Lies an Hour and Ain’t True & Uncle False. Then on Thursday, return to hear “Brand Spankin’ New Fangled” stories never before told in Orlando (or anywhere else, for that matter). Just keep in mind that, as magical as this modern-day troubadour’s stories might sound, Strickland insists the only reason he calls his art “fictional storytelling” is because “that way I can’t

Singer-songwriter John Dorney floated into the Orlando scene early last year, sprinkling music platforms with delightful ditties along the way. At the end of January, Dorney released the first single, “Here Now,” from an upcoming three song mini-album, and the opening acoustic-guitar riff is positively captivating, roaring into ’70s swoon-worthy solos and excited snare rumblings. This triumvirate of tracks were recorded at Ashlawn Recording Company in a quiet Connecticut farm setting — with talented friends Megan Shea and bandmate Nathan May — and are meant to evoke the time and setting of recording. Not art for art’s sake, but the opposite. “Things we cannot see, just like the tattoo on my left knee, has me thinking of the things we tend to hide.” When Dorney delivers this line, it reminds us

that art can be gorgeously linked to the period of time and setting where it was created. Dorney’s new band will debut at his single release show Friday, along with Megan Shea and Zoya Zafar. The lineup comes courtesy of Ugly Orange and happens on the intimate stage at Framework Coffee House. Show these local crooners some love. 8 p.m., Framework Craft Coffee House, 1201 N. Paws in the Park

It’s a doggone shame that the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando only hosts its pet festival once a year, but the good news is that it’s this weekend. For a 30th year, pups aplenty take over Lake Eola for Paws in the Park. The celebration features the iconic pet costume contest, offering cash prizes for cat or dog costumes on the following themes: “Show Your Orlando Pride,” “Stars of Film & TV,” “Dogs With Jobs” and “Fun With Food.” There will also be dock-diving for dogs, lure courses, a beer garden, food trucks and pet-friendly vendors. Those looking for a furry family member of their own will have the opportunity to adopt cats and dogs in need of a loving home. And the Pet Alliance’s mobile vet unit will also be providing free on-site vaccines. While the event is free, the Pet Alliance will have fundraising opportunities to help support its mission to educate, shelter, place and heal cats and dogs. We expect thoroughly pawsitive vibes all around. 10 a.m., Lake Eola Park, North Rosalind Avenue and East Washington Street, pawsinthepark.org, free. — Alexandra Sullivan

Virginia Drive Live

Soon after Paws in the Park wraps up at Lake Eola, you can keep the party going and head over to this Ivanhoe Village-meets-Mills 50 street party. Virginia Drive Live sees artists, vendors and musicians doing their thing on Virginia Drive between Orange Avenue and Mills Avenue. The event encourages attendees to support neighborhood businesses, whether it’s a business familiar to them or one they’re just discovering. This year’s participants include SwedeDish, Katsu Cream,

WEEK PopoVcrafts, Sunny K Candles, Miyagi’s Garden and more. For access to specials at select businesses, guests can purchase a wristband for $5 at Ten10 Brewing or at the Yard at Ivanhoe. 5 p.m., Virginia Drive between Orange and Mills avenues, ivanhoevillage.org, free-$5. — AS SUNDAY, FEB. 11

Love Is a Drag Brunch

If you’re coupled up or whatever, you’re probably going to want to patronize a restaurant at some point around Valentine’s Day. And on Sunday you can hit the trifecta of (1) a Valentine’s outing to a (2) ritzy brunch that is (3) in service of a good cause. Even better, you can take in some local drag excellence. LGBTQ+ advocacy organization Zebra Youth is the beneficiary of a “Love Is a Drag” brunch that will raise funds for the valuable work they do. Sponsored by Orlando Pride and hosted at Quantum Leap Winery, at this late breakfast lovebirds get to nosh while sipping on mimosas and Bloody Marys, along with sundry other spirits. Attendees will also be tempted by a raffle and silent auction, but the real treat is getting to see Angelica Jones, Mr.Ms. Adrian, Orusha San Miguel and Tashae Royale Sherrington perform. Attendance at this event pretty much ensures that Valentine’s Day will not be a dud this year. 11 a.m., Quantum Leap Winery, 1312 Wilfred Drive, givebutter.com/c/wwRnkS, $85$900. — MM

your beloved to make them feel supremely understood and appreciated?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Reading through the annals of famous authors’ quotes about love, I’m horrified by the relentlessness of their sour assessments. “Love is merely a madness,” wrote Shakespeare. “Whoever is not jealous is not in love,” said St. Augustine. “General incivility is the very essence of love,” declared Jane Austen. “It is impossible to love and be wise,” moaned Francis Bacon. “Real love always has something hidden — some loss or boredom or tiny hate,” says Andrew Sean Greer. I am allergic to all that dour noise! Personally, I have been entangled in a lot of romantic love during my time on Earth, and most of it has been interesting, educational, and therapeutic. I am deeply grateful for ALL of it, even the heartbreaks. Any wisdom I have developed owes a great debt to my lovers. What about you, Aquarius? Where do you stand on these issues? I suspect the coming months will provide you with ample reasons to embrace my attitudes.

these goals. So will doing everything with a dancer’s abandon, including love-making.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Have you discovered all there is to know about your sexual feelings and proclivities? Have you come to a complete understanding of what turns you on and how you might express it? I hope your answer to those questions is “no,” Pisces. In my view, all of us should keep evolving our relationship with Eros. There is always more to discover and explore about the mysteries of our desires. Always more to learn about what excites and inspires us. The coming days will be an excellent time for you to enjoy this research.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): A psychic told me that

ARIES (March 21-April 19): In honor of the Valentine season, and in accordance with astrological omens, I offer you a love letter from an unpublished novel by an Aries friend. Consider saying something similar to a person who would be thrilled to hear it. Here it is: “We will seize the sexiest joy we can conjure. We will turn each other into boisterous deities in quest of liberation from all unnecessary limitations. We will tenderly shock each other with mysterious epiphanies and rivers of bliss. ‘Wild’ will be too mild a word for the awakenings we provoke in each other’s futures.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “The greater the fool, the better the dancer.” Composer Theodore Hook said that. Poet Edwin Denby agreed. He said, “There is a bit of insanity in dancing that does everybody a great deal of good.” Choreographer Martha Graham added, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul of the body.” I bring these thoughts to your attention because the coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to get freer, more sensuous and less constrained. Dancing your inhibitions into oblivion will be an excellent way to pursue

com asked various critics to name the most preposterous sex scene to appear in a recently published novel. I was honored that one of the vignettes selected was from my book The Televisionary Oracle. As I read the critic’s review of my wild, funny, crazy erotic story, I realized he was a pedantic macho prude who thought sex isn’t sex unless it’s dead serious and joylessly intense. The characters of mine he regarded as preposterous were in fact playing, laughing and having goofy fun. In the spirit of my novel’s kooky lovers and in accordance with astrological omens, I invite you to pursue uproarious amusement while enjoying the arts of intimacy — both in and out of bed. (P.S.: Playwright Rose Franken said, “Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly.”)

in one of my past lives, I was Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome. It’s an intriguing theory that could help explain why my horoscopes are popular in Italy. What about you, my fellow Cancerian? Is there an aspect of your reincarnational history that aids your current destiny? Or are there past events in your current life that are becoming more influential? The coming weeks will be a good time to meditate on these possibilities. While you ruminate on your history, check in with the spirits of your ancestors and departed allies to see if they have any inspirational messages for you.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Kevin Kelly wrote the

book Excellent Advice for Living: Wisdom I Wish I’d Known Earlier. There he observes, “Listening well is a superpower. While listening to someone you love, keep asking them ‘Is there more?’ until there is no more.” Dear Leo, this is excellent advice for you in the coming weeks. I urge you to specialize in gathering the deep revelations of those you care for. Opening yourself to them in unprecedented ways will boost your soul power and enrich your wisdom.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Imagine you are walking on a hill at night. You are headed to meet a person you adore, who awaits you with champagne and chocolate. The weather is balmy. The moon is full. You are singing songs you both love, announcing your arrival. The songs tell stories about how much you two love to yearn for each other and how much you love quenching your yearning. When you arrive, dear Virgo, what will you tell

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Has your approach to

togetherness become infused with habit or numbness? When was the last time you got extravagant for the sake of love? Has it been a while since you tried a daring romantic move or two? I bring these questions to your attention, Libra, because now is an excellent time to rev up your imagination as you upgrade intimacy, companionship and collaboration. I hope you will authorize your fantasy life to be lush, unruly and experimental. Spur yourself to dream up departures from routine that intrigue your close allies.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Author W. Somerset

Maugham (1874–1965) testified, “My own belief is that there is hardly anyone whose sexual life, if it were broadcast, would not fill the world with surprise and horror.” Is that true about you, Scorpio? Even if it is, I’m guessing the horrifying aspects will be nonexistent in the coming weeks. There may be surprises, yes. There may be entertaining interludes. But from what I can tell, everything will at least be educational and colorful. What are your most exotic erotic fantasies? Now is a good time to ask a willing partner to explore them with grace and good humor.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The Valentine

season is looming, and many of us are receptive to advice about togetherness. I’ll offer some principles that I believe are essential to you Sagittarians as you nourish ALL your close relationships, including your romantic bonds. They are from novelist Graham Joyce. He wrote, “Two people in love don’t make a hive mind. Neither should they want to be a hive mind, to think the same, to know the same. It’s about being separate and still loving each other, being distinct from each other. One is the violin string, one is the bow.”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Lately, I have been

intoxicated a lot. Not because I’ve ingested drugs and alcohol. Not because I have been doing three-hour meditations or studying sacred texts. I’ve felt so wildly free and euphoric because life has been dismantling some of my fears. Once it happened when my psychotherapist spoke just the right curative words at a pivotal moment in our session. Another time, I came upon a very large hare while strolling in the woods and had an epiphany about how to heal a painful trauma in my past. On another occasion, I dreamed of a priestess doing a banishing ritual to exorcise my abandonment fears. There were three other similar events, as well. I bring this to your attention because I suspect you may soon also get intoxicated through the loss of fears. orlandoweekly.com ● FEB. 7-13, 2024 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY
