A judge ordered the shutdown of much of Alligator Alcatraz, Orlando launched a new shelter bus program for the homeless, hundreds of postal workers rallied against privatizing the USPS and other news you may have missed last week.

» Orlando’s new ‘dignity buses’ offer nightly shelter for the homeless

The city of Orlando and the nonprofit Christian Service Center are now providing overnight shelter and accommodations to a rotating group of homeless people through a city-funded program involving retrofitted Greyhound buses. Modeled after a “Dignity Bus” program in Vero Beach, the city’s new bus program will offer no-cost shelter for up to 42 people per night on two Greyhound buses the city purchased and rehabbed for $175,000 each. The buses offer individual sleeping pods with a mattress, sheets, a light, a charging outlet and a curtain for privacy. Orlando-area state Rep. Anna Eskamani, who’s running for mayor, slept on it last week as part of a group test-run and gave it a thumbs-up. In addition, the buses also have a restroom on-board and air conditioning. According to Eric Gray, CEO of the Christian Service Center, each bed costs the program about $33 per person, per night — just a fraction of what it would cost to jail a person for sleeping on public property instead. (Per ClickOrlando, the cost of detaining a person in the local jail is about $140 per night.) Gray said that his nonprofit will work to also connect those who sleep on the bus with other social services and long-term permanent housing options, as they become available.

» Hundreds of postal workers rallied against privatization outside Orlando City Hall

A couple hundred postal workers and allies rallied outside of Orlando City Hall last week to protest ongoing concerns about the privatization of the U.S. Postal Service under the corporate-friendly Trump administration. One of four USPS unions, the National Rural Letter Carriers Association organized the rally. Union members wore red shirts emblazoned “Protect Our Letter Carriers” and held signs that read “Enough Is Enough” and “Stop Privatization — Protect the USPS.” According to the union, nearly 2 million Floridians live in rural areas that could be disproportionately affected by privatization. That’s because delivering mail to rural communities, while necessary and a net positive, is less profitable. The threat of privatization was similarly floated during Trump’s first term in office, and remained an unresolved, if dormant, concern during the Biden administration. U.S. Postmaster General David Steiner, who in effect leads USPS, denied plans to privatize the postal service in a video message sent to postal workers last month, but his background still has workers concerned. Steiner, a businessman who formerly served on the board of directors for FedEx, a private shipping competitor, was selected by the USPS Board of Governors to lead USPS in May, after former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced plans to step down.

» Judge orders Alligator Alcatraz shut down

A federal judge has ordered that no more immigrant detainees be sent to the state’s immigration detention facility in the Florida Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz.” The judge also called upon the government to begin dismantling much of the facility. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams gave both the state and federal government 60 days to move out existing detainees and to begin removing temporary fencing, generators, gas, sewage and other waste and receptacles installed to support the project. In her 82-page decision, Williams cited extensive harm to the Everglades caused by operation of the facility, which was built in eight days. The state of Florida filed a notice of appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeal for the Eleventh Circuit immediately after the order was released. Two environmental groups — Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity — filed a lawsuit in late June, shortly after the state announced that the facility was about to open, claiming the plan had not gone through any environmental review as required under federal law. They were joined in the lawsuit by the Miccosukee Tribe. In her ruling, Judge Williams agreed, saying that under federal law, the government was required to issue an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) or conduct an Environmental Assessment (EA). “The Defendants chose not to do so,” she wrote.

» Florida sees 37.6 percent drop in abortions provided

The number of abortions reported in Florida during the first seven months of 2025 was about 37.6 percent lower than during the same period in 2024, according to new data posted on the state Agency for Health Care Administration website. As of the end of July, 25,288 abortions had been reported this year. That was down from 40,499 abortions during the comparable period in 2024. The decrease comes after a law took effect in May 2024 that largely prevents abortions after six

weeks of pregnancy. Of this year’s total, 25,124 abortions were performed during the first trimester of pregnancy, while 164 were performed during the second trimester, according to the agency data. The largest number of second-trimester abortions, 104, resulted from what is described as “fatal fetal abnormality.”

» Florida voters with new driver’s licenses may need to update their voter registration

Florida election officials and voting rights advocates warned that if you’ve renewed or replaced your state driver’s license or state ID in the past year, that could affect your ability to vote by mail or have your signature on a petition ballot be counted. The change in policy started more than a year ago. Beginning on July 31, 2024, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles began implementing legislation that requires the distinguishing numbers assigned to a driver’s license or identification card to include at least four randomly generated numbers. The agency says the change was done “to improve security and safeguard individuals’ identities.” That change means that when voters go online to apply for a vote-by-mail ballot, they could encounter error messages if their driver’s license information is out of sync with the information they supplied when registering to vote. “The main thing that the voters need to know is if they have renewed or replaced their driver’s license in the last year, they need to call their supervisors and update their registration,” said Brad Ashwell, Florida director for All Voting Is Local.

Orange County Jail medical staff decry ‘two-tier’ pay system

One nurse says federal orders to house undocumented immigrants on behalf of ICE have worsened short-staffing problems

As Orange County correctional staff face more pressure than ever under orders to house immigrants detained by federal immigrants enforcement agents at the local jail, medical staff employed by the corrections department say the county is undervaluing their work.

Orange County Jail, the fourth-largest jail in Florida, houses more than 3,000 people per day on average, as of last year. Since March, the jail has also had an agreement with ICE to serve as a temporary holding center for people accused of violating federal immigration law.

A glaring problem that’s emerged, however, beyond concerns of due process rights for detained immigrants, is that the jail is also short-staffed. According to an internal report, the jail had a 26 percent vacancy rate as of January. To help recruit more correctional officers, the county agreed to give correctional officers a 22 percent raise this year, as part of union contract negotiations.

Registered nurses, mental health specialists and other medical staff for the jail, however, say the county has declined to offer them similar incentives, sparking concern that staff vacancies will only grow worse. One nurse, who requested anonymity due to fear of retaliation, said the county told them their jobs “are not considered high-risk,” even though they face dangers such as assault on the job.

“We have had health care staff, nursing staff that have been spat on, physically hurt, anything you could think of,” she told Orlando Weekly. One nurse this past Mother’s Day, she said, had a tablet thrown at her by an inmate, resulting in a broken nose and a jagged cut that required stitches.

Nurses in the private sector, working out of hospitals and other healthcare settings, have reported an acceleration in incidents of workplace violence since the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to feelings of burnout and decisions to leave the industry.

“We are well aware of the things that we face when we go in through those doors to go to work every single day,” the Orange County nurse of nearly 10 years said. “We know there [are] risks, but we also need to be valued.”

The union representing medical staff at the jail — the American Federation of State,

County and Municipal Employees — is currently in negotiations with the county for a new, three-year contract. Their current union contract, covering about 60 employees, is set to expire Oct. 1.

Compared to correctional officers, the county has offered medical staff just a 5 percent raise in the first year of their next contract, according to the union, leaving medical staff “angry” and feeling undervalued.

Medical staff, like the nurse we spoke to, see the discrepancy in raise offers as a “two-tier” pay system that doesn’t take into account their education and training (considering they are licensed professionals) nor the safety and health risks they face in serving the jail population.

“We’re in closer contact with them than corrections, because we’re doing medical assessments. We have to get close to their chest and hear their hearts,” the nurse explained. “We’re basically up in their faces.”

She doesn’t believe they’re more deserving of raises than correctional officers, necessarily. But she believes they should be treated on par with them. “I love my job,” she said. But a sense of purpose doesn’t pay the bills.

services in the jail are people who are homeless or have a severe, persistent mental illness, according to a recent report from a jail oversight commission.

They’re “frequently arrested” on low-level, nonviolent offenses such as sleeping on public property, “often stemming from their lack of shelter and untreated mental illness,” the report states.

Most people with mental illness are not violent, and are actually more likely to be victims of violent crimes than perpetrators. But issues such as overcrowding, isolation, lack of autonomy and disconnection from family can worsen mental health outcomes and trigger feelings of anxiety and depression.

The longtime nurse said she’s concerned the current state of affairs will only grow worse if the county doesn’t step it up. “I am scared that, in them trying to do this, we will be facing very short staffing at Orange County [Jail], and it’s going to put everybody at risk, not just the nurses, also the patients that we deal with day in and day out.”

When reached for comment, a county spokesperson declined to confirm their wage offer for

‘We have had health care staff that have been spat on, physically hurt, anything you could think of,’ says one nurse.

The union has presented problems to the county that medical staff face on the job — from overcrowding in the jail to short-staffing, inadequate medical supplies, and mental health crises among inmates that are exacerbated by limited psychiatric staff and resources. Many of those who receive mental health and substance use

$31 and $51 per hour, while the national average is about $45 an hour, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Medical clerks at the jail, under the contract, have a starting wage of just $16.54 an hour, while medical and dental assistants are paid an hourly rate of $17.88.

This is significantly lower than correctional officers, who are not required to have completed any higher education, but must have at least completed high school. Under a new contract negotiated by their union, the Jerry B. Haddock Lodge No. 86 of the Fraternal Order of Police, correctional officers are paid a minimum hourly rate of $27.42, maxing out at about $40 an hour. County commissioners approved that contract in April.

The nurse we spoke to said the county has argued they have a separate, more limited budget for corrections health services, and are refusing to up their offer. “We’re simply asking for equality in pay across the board. Instead, we keep hearing ‘there’s no budget’ and even get comments like ‘we got DOGE’d,’” a union rep shared in an email Friday, referring to the Florida Agency for Fiscal Oversight (formerly known as the Florida Department of Government Efficiency task force).

“On top of that, every time we bring a proposal, we meet resistance, and when we ask for real numbers on the budget, we just get vague answers instead of transparency,” they continued. “We’ve been trying to work toward a fair agreement, but it’s clear we have a fight ahead of us.”

There’s been pressure placed on the county by the state to keep the county budget tight. Officials from the so-called FAFO (modeled after the controversial federal DOGE team created under President Trump) visited Orange County earlier this month to dig into and assess the county’s spending.

The task force reportedly planned to zero in on about 60 different areas of the county’s finances, including county contracts; salaries of county staffers; spending on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, “or so-called anti-racism”; spending on efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and direct spending on programs addressing homelessness, among other requests.

AFSCME, stating the county “will not discuss pending contract negotiations.” The county also declined to comment on the allegation of retaliation levied against medical staff who speak out about dangerous working conditions.

Under their current union contract, registered nurses at the Orange County Jail earn between

The county jail is reportedly facing increased operational expenses through its housing of undocumented immigrants detained by ICE agents — a cost of $180 per person, per day. Under its agreement with ICE, the jail can temporarily hold detainees for up to 72 hours before they are either moved or released. But the Orlando Sentinel found that, in some cases, detained immigrants are also being cycled in and out and back into the jail, giving ICE agents more time to pick them up and transfer them to a longer-term detention facility.

“Something really particular that we’ve been struggling with, staff-wise, is the influx of ICE patients who leave the jail and within hours come right back,” the nurse told us.

RAINBOW REJECTION

Orlando’s Pulse memorial rainbow crosswalk painted over in ‘callous’ overnight act

The rainbow-colored crosswalk outside Pulse nightclub just south of downtown Orlando was painted over last Wednesday night, without any prior notice or warning, according to city officials.

“We are devastated to learn that overnight the state painted over the Pulse Memorial crosswalk on Orange Avenue,” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said in a statement released the next day. “This callous action of hastily removing part of a memorial to what was at the time our nation’s largest mass shooting, without any supporting safety data or discussion, is a cruel, political act.”

The Florida Department of Transportation, a state agency that has ordered the removal of rainbow crosswalks in other Florida cities in recent weeks, confirmed late Thursday night (hours after we originally reached out for comment) that they were indeed the culprit behind the overnight paint job.

“As the state highway department, it is the duty of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to ensure the safety and consistency of public roadways and transportation systems,” a spokesperson shared in a statement. “That means ensuring our roadways are not utilized for social, political, or ideological interests.”

The rainbow crosswalk, first installed in 2017, served as both a safety measure and a memorial, according to city officials. The crosswalk was painted outside the property of the former gay nightclub Pulse, the site of a mass shooting in 2016 that killed 49 people, many of whom were young, LGBTQ+ people of color.

Florida Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith, a gay state legislator representing parts of Orlando, described the removal of the crosswalk Thursday as a “terrible insult” and a “hostile act.”

“The reality is that this crosswalk was painted not only to remember the 49 people who were murdered here in cold blood, but it was also intended to keep pedestrians and visitors safe who have come here year after year to pay their respects,” Smith told Orlando Weekly, standing outside the Pulse property Thursday morning. His expression bore a combination of both anger and sadness, rivaling the fury of city Commissioner Patty Sheehan, whose district includes Pulse.

“It’s a hostile act,” Smith added. “A hostile act by the state government against a city. Fascism is knocking on our door.”

Smith said it’s also notable considering the fact that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recently

Brandon Wolf, a Pulse survivor who today serves as press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, called DeSantis out online for turning his back on survivors like himself and the Orlando community. “Huh. When @ GovRonDeSantis visited Pulse — and its colorful, state-approved crosswalk — in 2019 to tell us he would ‘always have our backs,’ he didn’t seem worried that the rainbow was a safety hazard. Or a political statement,” Wolf wrote in a post published to X.

DeSantis earlier this year also faced criticism for his remembrance statement on the nine-year anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting, in which he omitted any mention of the LGBTQ and Hispanic communities, two groups that represented the majority of the victims.

approved nearly $400,000 in requested state funds to help support the construction of a permanent memorial at Pulse.

While an interim memorial has been set up outside the property for years, a permanent memorial by the city to commemorate the 2016 massacre and honor the 49 victims killed, their families, and the shooting survivors, is still in the works.

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, however, blasted the concept of rainbow crosswalks last month, announcing a new federal initiative to “eliminate distractions” on roadways. “Taxpayers expect their dollars to fund safe streets, not rainbow crosswalks,” Duffy wrote on the social media platform X.

Duffy — a former Fox News presenter, lobbyist and cast member of MTV’s The Real World in 1997 — was appointed DOT secretary by President Donald Trump earlier this year. He reportedly sent letters to governors in all 50 U.S. states (plus Puerto Rico and D.C.) on July 1, urging state officials to “prioritize investments that improve mobility and safety on roadways.” The Florida Department of Transportation, riding the coattails of Duffy’s new “safe roads scheme,” has similarly sent out letters to city officials whose jurisdictions contain rainbow crosswalks.

Gov. DeSantis for his part took to his X account on Thursday to call the painted strip of road outside Pulse “political,” despite approving the project back when it was first established.

“We will not allow our state roads to be commandeered for political purposes,” DeSantis wrote, in response to a video taken by Sen. Smith (and shared by news account Florida’s Voice), in which he filmed himself speaking about the middle-of-the-night removal of the rainbow crosswalk.

Multiple Orlando lawmakers, officials and community members have since condemned the removal of the rainbow crosswalk and have gathered at the site to fill in the now-black crosswalk with rainbow-colored chalk and paint. Officers from the Florida Highway Patrol and Orlando Police Department were also spotted across the street from the crosswalk over the weekend as protesters gathered to repaint the strip of road. Multiple news outlets reported that they had threatened to arrest anyone who used paint rather than easily washed-away chalk or obstructed traffic.

According to FDOT, the city of Orlando did receive an initial notice from them in June to bring their roadways, including crosswalks, up to state standards, following state and federal policy updates. But Dyer and Sheehan confirmed the city did not receive any notice or warning that the crosswalk would be painted over last week, particularly in the middle of the night.

Rainbow crosswalks in Florida cities such as St. Petersburg, Key West and Delray Beach have also gotten caught in the cross-hairs of the Trump administration’s culture war. Creative Loafing Tampa Bay reported late Friday that St. Pete Mayor Ken Welch confirmed FDOT will remove their city’s street murals, too, including its rainbow crosswalk and “Black History Matters.” In a letter to residents, Mayor Welch said that FDOT denied the city’s request for exemption from its recent mandate banning street murals in conjunction with the Trump administration.

The LGBTQ+ community has faced other, more tangible attacks under the Trump administration, including federal efforts to restrict gender-affirming care for transgender young adults (something Floridians are already subjected to under state law) and the rescission of federal regulations prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Still, local LGBTQ+ advocates like Smith remain resolved. “I’m feeling betrayed, but we will not be erased,” said Smith. “If the state gets their way and has the final say over this rainbow crosswalk, there will be a rainbow that shows up somewhere else nearby that’s going to be even bigger, even gayer and even more colorful.”

Drag star Alaska is dying to perform for you at the Ren’s VBar: The Awakening

Yes, yes, Halloween Horror Nights is ushering in spooky season here in Orlando at the end of this week, an unseasonably early date, to be sure. But there’s a much more local (and non-theme park) Halloween tradition going neck and neck with the behemoth haunt, kicking off on the exact same evening. And these local fearmongers are bringing in some glittering all-star backup. You see, the Renaissance Theatre Co. are throwing a blood-soaked twonight preview party for their late-night autumnal drag fright-fest VBar with a very special guest: Alaska Thunderfuck.

Alaska — multi-talented drag performer, musician, RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars winner, off-Broadway star and memoirist — will be in Orlando to headline a special weekend preview run of Nosferatu afterparty and drag showcase VBar. Though Alaska is infamous for a more show-stopping and glammed-up style of drag, she’s down with the frights for her weekend performances, promising witchy and ghoulish songs and drag. “I’m going to be looking beautiful but a little frightening,” she promises wickedly during an

impromptu chat with Orlando Weekly.

“We’re thrilled that Alaska — one of my favorite drag performers — is coming to kick off Nosferatu this year at VBar: the Awakening,” Ren co-founder Donald Rupe tells OW.“We’ve got a lot of surprises and also a lot of the things that people have come to expect. It’s going to be our biggest year yet, and it’s only right that we start it off with drag royalty like Alaska.”

As Rupe threatens, a few days after The Awakening, immersive theater experience Nosferatu emerges from the coffin for a fifth year. From Sept. 5 to Nov. 8, the Renaissance Theatre will be transformed into a shadowy realm ruled over by the undead. Over 40 performers create a full-spectrum world of vampiric intrigue, complete with song, dance, acrobatics, pomp, circumstance and endless gallons of fake(?) blood. Think the dark physicality of the blood rave scene in Blade, think Interview With a Vampire’s dark camp, think Francis Ford Coppola’s take on Dracula but without the inept Brit accents. Oh, and this year, the dress code is all-black for audience and performer alike.

The bloody good times of Nosferatu continue with the weekend VBar afters. The witching-hour drag affairs promise hair-raising thrills and jumpscares courtesy of Myki Meeks, Coco Cavalli,

Anesthesia, Beatrixxx Oddity, Black Magix Royal, Angelica Sanchez and more. These are worth your dollars even as a stand-alone night out. But back to this weekend’s queen of the vampires …

How did this ghoulish gig come about? Was the Renaissance Theatre on your radar at all through Off the Record or previous Nosferatus?

Honestly, I had no idea what kind of vampiric madness you were up to down in Florida. But I’m so glad that they asked me to come and be a part of it.

You’ll be helping to kick off the Halloween season here in Orlando — how do you usually celebrate Halloween?

I dress up in bizarre clothing and face-altering cosmetics pretty much every day, so I usually enjoy staying home and giving out candy on actual Halloween. My favorite Halloween costume is a simple black sweater, with a dot on my nose and three lines on my cheeks and I call myself a cat.

Can you give us a tease of what you have planned for VBar? As a sidebar, who is your favorite vampire in pop culture?

I’m going to be looking beautiful but a little frightening, and I’ll be singing some of my favorite witch-, ghoul- or darkness-themed songs. My favorite vampire is the classic Bela Lugosi Count Dracula. He’s scary and elegant and fierce. He’s the OG.

What are your thoughts on taking the plunge and performing in Florida in 2025? We’re in a very weird and bad place right now politically and culturally.

Even in the most politically fucked-up places — which is all of America at this point — there are gay people. And queer people. And trans people. And they need to be entertained and they need to laugh. And most of all they need to gather together and see that they’re not alone and that we have power when we congregate and organize. So if I get to be a part of that, I will go anywhere I am called.

Is there anything you’re looking to do in your off-time in Orlando? Will you still be celebrating your recent engagement? [Alaska got engaged to Los Angeles-based producer Matthew Herman a few weeks ago.] And congratulations, by the way!

When I’m in Orlando I’ll probably be finding great vegetarian food, so I’m open to recommendations. And thank you so much! Matt and I are very much enjoying being engaged.

After fantasizing about fleeing floundering Florida for Canada, an unintended weeklong stay in Quebec puts fantasy to the test

I’m far from the first Central Floridian to fantasize about fleeing our floundering state — where paper-skinned politicians pander to an imploding president by petulantly painting over previously approved crosswalk memorials in the name of supposed traffic safety, while simultaneously dismantling speed bumps to fascism like due process and the rule of law — and relocating to a saner, safer space. A land where inclusion and diversity aren’t dirty words; where sustainability and equity are valued over unrestrained capitalism; and where the government proactively invests in infrastructure supporting vibrant public arts festivals, instead of paying lip service while nickel-and-diming them to death. A place like Canada, eh?

Unfortunately, I’ve learned the hard way that even having a Canadian step-parent is no leg up on getting residency, much less citizenship, in our neighbor to the north. But last week I got to live the dream briefly, when a short visit to family in Quebec was unexpectedly extended by a flight attendants strike that grounded Air Canada’s entire fleet for several days just as I was supposed fly home. Since the labor action — which was ruled “illegal” — wasn’t covered under the carrier’s compensation policy, my solidarity with the union (whose primary demand was compensation for unpaid hours spent working on the ground) cost me the equivalent of a mortgage payment, but the gift of additional time exploring the city of Montreal turned out to be priceless. Orlando and Montreal are surprisingly similar in several ways: Both are relatively liberal enclaves located in the southeastern region of their respective nations, both are beacons for tourists from across the country and around the globe, and both are bedeviled by Kafkaesque road construction projects that never seem to

end. (Believe it or not, Montreal’s omnipresent brigades of orange barricades make FDOT’s I-4 makeovers look like minor touch-ups.) And although every resident I spoke with instantly started raving about Florida’s weather upon hearing where I live, Montreal offers countless outdoor activities from April through October, which is about the same number of months out of the year that I can tolerate Orlando’s ever-warming climate.

As far as attractions go, Orlando and Montreal both have tourist districts that feature an iconic Ferris wheel and a big-top hosting a Cirque du Soleil show; the Mexico-inspired Luzia (which played in the Florida Mall’s parking lot a decade ago) is still stunning. Thanks in part to taxpayer support, Montreal also enjoys a proliferation of historical sites, as well as museums and galleries, most of which are affordable or even free. But crucially, in Quebec those tourism and cultural anchors are connected to each other by a walkable urban core, where pedestrians have primacy over private vehicles and parking lots don’t dominate the landscape.

It was on St. Helen’s Island, which I reached by water ferry from Montreal’s Old Port, where I most felt like I’d slipped through a multiverse portal into a bizarro inversion of Orlando — for better and worse. Partially constructed from landfill for the 1967 International and Universal Exposition (aka Expo 67), the island still holds remnants of that seminal event, which was in its own way as influential on Walt Disney World’s original EPCOT Center as the iconic 1964 New York World’s Fair was on Disneyland. Notably, although the monorail that ran through the American pavilion was demolished, they’ve preserved the architectural legacy of Buckminster Fuller, who birthed both the geodesic dome

structure still surrounding the Biosphere ecology museum and the “Spaceship Earth” philosophy behind WDW’s big silver golf ball.

However, at the opposite end of St. Helen’s — in every sense of the word — sits La Ronde, the northeastern-most theme park in the newly merged Six Flags/Cedar Fair chain. Having purchased a Gold annual pass at California’s Knott’s Berry Farm only weeks before, I decided to test its advertised validity until 2027 at any of 40-plus parks at my most geographically distant option … much to my own peril. My comedy of errors began when I foolishly followed posted signs for pedestrian access to the park only to put in over 10,000 steps going up, down, back over, and finally around a near-vertical mountain; I finally resorted to following a French-speaking family down a sidewalk-less roadway, across a field, and past a bemused groundhog to a foliage-obscured entrance.

The good news is that when I eventually arrived at La Ronde’s gates, my mobile phonebased pass functioned flawlessly; the same cannot be said of any of the entry plaza’s restrooms, but at least the search for working facilities led me to find a pseudo-Western saloon where draft beer was conspicuously cheaper than in Floridian parks. Thus fortified, I set out to circumnavigate the park and find one ride that looked worth the wait.

This turned out to be far easier said than done, because La Ronde’s attractions sprawl along a curving shoreline, and current wait times weren’t available in the park’s app or website, or even outside most ride entrances. Despite it being a weekday and not uncomfortably crowded along the walkways, I soon discovered that even simple clones of Dumbo and Mad Tea Party had hundreds of guests in line. And very quickly after stepping into the deceptively short queue for Vampire (a B&M inverted coaster similar to Busch Gardens Tampa’s Montu), I discovered La Ronde’s Achilles heel: capacity.

Shortly after the confetti of Epic Universe’s grand opening was swept away, social media discourse began to focus on the new park’s reported problems with throughput and reliability. As legitimate as those issues are, I’ll never complain about them at Universal again after only a handful of hours witnessing the glacial ride operations at La Ronde, where taking seven or eight minutes to dispatch a single 24-seat train is considered completely normal.

Yet, even though they were standing virtually motionless for hours in completely unthemed, unshaded switchbacks, sans any air-conditioned preshows, the La Ronde guests I witnessed weren’t screaming or shoving each other, or even staring silently at their cell phones. They were smiling and laughing, talking with their friends and neighbors, and being polite to the employees, who were unfailingly friendly right back. There may not be a Wizarding World in Montreal’s La Ronde, but their ministry must have some kind of magic, because Orlando’s park-goers would be rioting under similar circumstances. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

MONDO ITALIANO

Tratto brings a world of Italian flavor to Avalon Park

Our global foodscape has arguably benefited more from the historic wanderings of Italians than any other people. Especially in the Americas, and especially in South America. Outside of Italy, Argentina is home to the largest Italian population in the world. Tens of millions claim ancestry in Brazil. And where Italians set foot, Italian food flourishes — it turns out Earthlings love pasta, Parmesan and talking with their hands.

In Orlando, South American immigrants born of Italian immigrants are responsible for some of our better boot-shaped restaurants. Restaurants like Turci and Vinia. Add Tratto in Avalon Park to this list, where Venezolanos Mabel Munoz and Alvaro Ramirez tap Munoz’s Italian roots to sling seriously tasty eats.

Avalon Park is the Potemkin Pluto of Orlando’s solar system. Veneered and out there. For most, visiting Tratto will mean a tangle of “4” roads before braving an asteroid belt of injury attorney billboards, traffic lights and taco trucks. At the wrong time of day, the journey can be intense. Thankfully, the destination is also intense — a welcoming kind of intense. Subtlety isn’t an arrow in Tratto’s kitchen quiver. No one wants a subtle hug, and the food

here greets and squeezes with a full-flavored embrace, belying the casual calm of its dining room and staff.

Intensity finds form in Tratto’s best-selling dish; a fall-apart, slow-braised short rib sauced in red-wine reduction with truffle risotto ($32). Pow, right in the kisser. Likewise, deliciously creamy seafood risotto ($34) is emboldened by “fosforera soup,” a traditional Venezuelan seafood broth that lends an irresistible headiness to Tratto’s seafood dishes. Beef ragù with paccheri ($22), one of several menu staples Munoz learned from her Roman grandmother, was so soulful I could almost taste echoes of Caesar — Shirley Caesar. Yes, Lord, yes. This is food your body welcomes. That warms the brain. But I get ahead of myself.

Starters aren’t to be missed, including carpaccio di manzo ($16) with its interplay of quality fresh and flesh, and a riff on ratatouille ($15) that shouts signature dish — a kaleidoscopic swirl of colorful vegetables given oomph by caponata, orbiting a pesto-topped burrata and served with excellent house-baked bread.

In my midtown bubble, I’d heard tall tales about the pizza on our perimeter but it’s the perimeter of the pizza at Tratto worth telling

tales about. The frico crust of a Detroit style Genovesa ($15) inspires, crisply fencing a glorious mess of ricotta, roasted tomato, pesto and profundity. The doughy know-how at Tratto runs deep. There is mastery of process at play, and judging by its pizza and bread, I assume it involves magic. Italians are fond of the phrase buono come il pane — “good as bread” — if anything were as good as this breadstuff, it would be sainted.

It will be a challenge, but save room for sweets. Panna cotta ($10) is a dessert that rides the fence between creamy and gelatinous, and while Tratto’s visually striking vanilla panna cotta with strawberry coulis had some wiggle, it was greedily devoured, as was cheesecake with pistachio cream ($10) that proved dolce vita perfection.

A final tip: Forget everything you’ve read to this point. Porchetta ($32) is a FridaySaturday special, and a special one at that — a piggiepalooza of crackle-crisp, herbal, meaty and succulent. It’s bold and soulful like Tratto itself and tastes of the passion that Munoz and Ramirez invest of themselves in this winner of a restaurant. Like much of the food at Tratto, it is more than worth the journey — a journey to what can feel like home — the home we seek and often find in good Italian food. dining@orlandoweekly.com

TACO’S LAB

Fast casual taqueria in a stripped-down west Winter Park setting proves popular, although its more over-the-top takes on tacos don’t always translate to success. Best to go straightforward with chips, dips and traditional tastes — like the birria, chorizo or simpler fish tacos. Steer clear of the “margarita.” Open all day every day. BLOOD SIMPLE

Alice in Chains guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell is coming and he wants blood

Jerry Cantrell is a creature of the night.

“My fucking brain is a pain sometimes to shut off. I’m kind of a vampire by nature; I normally exist pretty late. I don’t really go to sleep until about 4 or 5 in the morning. I’ve been living road hours my whole life, so I wake up about the crack of noon. I’ve always felt like those are some of my more creative hours because the brain is still turning at those late hours and if your head is keeping you up at night, maybe it’s a good idea to exercise what your head is coming up with and turn it into some music, some ideas and that’s kind of my method in a nutshell,” Cantrell tells Orlando Weekly

Cantrell, throughout all the restless years of his long career, has become a rock legend for his soulful vocals, songwriting skills and heavygroove guitar work in both 1990s grunge band Alice in Chains and his award-winning solo work. A founding member of Alice in Chains, Cantrell’s distinctive playing combined downtuned heavy guitar riffs with melodic and somber passages. Indeed, Cantrell wrote some of the band’s most popular songs, including “Would?,”“Them Bones” and “Rooster.”

Almost a year after the release of his latest solo album, I Want Blood, Cantrell has kicked off another leg of U.S. tour dates, complete with

a stop at Orlando’s House of Blues Wednesday. I Want Blood is Cantrell at his best — dark, grimy, oppressive and yet undeniably catchy, with riffs that originate in the hips, not the head.

“The reaction [to] playing that stuff live has been really strong, as well as material from the older records. And that’s always satisfying when you feel like you’re continuing to grow and create new music and have it kinda seamlessly fit with some of the standout tracks from [earlier] albums of your career and stuff. There’s definitely a good handful of songs on this record that really translate live well,” Cantrell says.

Also this year, Cantrell released a deluxe version of I Want Blood , featuring spoken-word versions of every song on the album. Cantrell’s narrations are accompanied by a dramatic score composed by Vincent Jones and featuring members of Ministry, Team Sleep and Stolen Babies.

“I don’t think I’ve ever done anything like that before, it was just kind of an idea that I followed through with. It was actually toward the end of the project, I was trying to figure out something special that we could do, and I thought of spoken word,” says Cantrell. “I recorded all the tracks,

JERRY CANTRELL with Filter

7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27 House of Blues Disney Springs, Lake Buena Vista houseofblues.com/orlando $58

and then it felt like it wasn’t enough. We were kind of out of time and we needed to deliver all these tracks to make sure it remained on the timeline to get printed into physical form, so I called up all my collaborators from over the last couple of records. I had just written a record full of music, so I didn’t really wanna write a whole other backing track to the spoken-word thing. I called everybody and asked if they would contribute. Everybody answered with some really great ideas and we put them together and it turned out to be a pretty cool little feature.”

Back to matters vampiric, Cantrell has also done work this year on the soundtrack for Ryan Coogler’s critically acclaimed horror film Sinners. Collaborating with Ludwig Göransson, who composed the film’s original score, the pair came out with “In Moonlight” as a bonus track for the Sinners soundtrack album.

“Ludwig said Ryan had been listening to a lot of AIC, and the movie was supposed to come out in maybe like three weeks when I got the call and they wanted to take one of the main themes of Ludwig’s and turn it into a song,” Cantrell says. “I met Ludwig and his wife, Serena, [who] took me down to see a screening of the movie so I could get the feel of what it was about because I wanted to immerse myself in it. I watched the screening, wrote down some lyrics, got an emotion and worked with Ludwig and in a couple of weeks, we came out with ‘In Moonlight’ for the album.”

“In Moonlight” expands on the main theme of the film’s score. Cantrell, already on record as a vampire, lends his voice to blend grungy sound with raw blues befitting of Sinners’ 1930s Mississippi setting.

“I think I was always pretty enamored with horror movies, and stories like Stephen King’s, one of my favorite authors to this day. I kind of dig the horror imagery. Black Sabbath is one of my favorite bands. It’s fun playing around with those kinds of darker, heavier things,” Cantrell says.

His career has spanned roughly four decades, but time has done nothing to deter Cantrell’s enthusiasm for making music and playing shows.

“I’m not looking too far back or too far in the future, just where I’m so excited about it. Music is something I have a passion for that really hasn’t changed. I just love music, I love making music. I appreciate that there are other artists who do, you know? It’s a pretty worthy effort, and I’m pretty lucky to be able to have created a career doing that along with my friends and other like-minded individuals,” Cantrell says.

LOCAL RELEASES

I stopped trying to guess where Matt Kamm will go next long ago. Besides, the music of this weird Orlando pioneer under the name Tele & the Ghost of Our Lord is best experienced omakase-style. Just strap in and savor the ride because, regardless of destination, it’ll always be an adventure. Even with a career of unpredictability, Kamm has recently mustered his most surprising era.

There’s been psych pop that’s far more psychedelic than pop. There’s been electronic music more for a vision quest than a dance club. But country music? That’s maybe the ultimate deviance for a chronically experimental artist. So, of course, there he went and planted his freak flag in a move that’s both turned and spun lots of heads.

The spate of Tele singles released in the past year have all been unmistakably country. We’re talking hard classic twang here, not soft-core indie folk. This novel direction defines watershed new album The Jukebox Has Gone Sentient, where Kamm indulges the muse with breadth and depth across country, Western, blues and folk.

But as with all things Matt Kamm, this album just can’t be kept in a box, even if it’s his own. Along the rootsy terrain are detours that remind you that this is still a Tele & the Ghost of Our Lord record. Those whims go from warped lounge music (“Bad Banana”) to synth punk (“Karma C’mon”) to sunny British-style pop (“The Pressures of the Day”).

“Stylistically, it somewhat mirrors my ADHD listening habits and attempts to wrangle them into a cohesive collection,” says Kamm. More than just a new chapter, Jukebox is a digest of a lifetime of influences that includes Roger Miller, The Moody Blues, The Buggles, Bowie, Leonard

Cohen, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet and The Smiths. “Some of the tunes took a few years for me to crack the code in regards to the performance and lyrics,” says Kamm. “Some happened in one evening or were inspired by my daughter telling a butterfly to come back in our garden.”

It’s a gumbo that’s wildly scattershot, yes, but also characteristically Kamm. Even so, the album is, without question, an utterly new mosaic of this unfoldingly complex artist. The Jukebox Has Gone Sentient releases on streaming platforms today and is available on cassette via Orlando punk label Godless America.

The big release show is this weekend, where Tele & the Ghost of Our Lord will play alongside Brett Staska, Billy Ruben & the Mind Readers and Swamp Blossom (8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, Will’s Pub, $12-$15).

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Truckfighters, Restless Spirit, Florist, Liquid Pennies: While the merchants of extremity get the obvious attention for their antics, few tilt the sonic scales like the titans of stoner rock when the fuzz pedal hits the metal. For their famous slab grooves and hulking guitars, Sweden’s Truckfighters are modern legends, and their arrival here will be Jesus-like for devotees of the almighty riff. In addition to the beastly doom metal of New York tourmates Restless Spirit, Florida reps hard on this deep bill with Tampa’s Florist and St. Pete’s Liquid Pennies, who’ve both just released excellent new records. Pound for pound, ton for ton, this show will be one of the biggest, baddest, hairiest lineups all year. So leave the corpse-paint kabuki to those other dudes and let these riffs show who’s really boss hog around here. (7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, Conduit, $20-$55)

Platonic Valentine, Alien Observer, Limo Scene, Earth Fault, crimesididntcommit: The alternative pop underground in Orlando is in a fertile moon right now, and this lineup is a tidy sampler of current movers who’ve all released notable new music this year. The very promising Platonic Valentine leads the way with exceptionally melodic postpunk pop. Completing the diverse bill nicely will be the sleekly subterranean electro-pop of Alienobserver, the dour synth-pop of Earth Fault, the anguished darkwave of Crimesididntcommit and the new-wave dance of Jacksonville’s Limo Scene. It’s a roundup of young risers that’s a glimpse at our scene’s near future. (7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, Will’s Pub, $10-$15) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

The Great Irish Hooley

Do you hear “Raglan Calling”? It must be time for the lucky 13th year of the Great Irish Hooley musical knees-up at Disney Springs institution Raglan Road. The holiday weekend mini-festival features authentic Irish entertainment, step-dancing and a menu full of proper Emerald Isle eats and drinks for four days. This year’s music lineup includes the Byrne Brothers, Northern Crossing, Bridín, Strings & Things and many more spread out over three stages. And it’s all free! Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis is a music festival and art project hitting Orlando during an objectively brutal time for extended outdoor excursions. And yet! Featuring over 30 performers across three stages, the fest features bass, house and techno with headliners like Alison Wonderland, Big Gigantic and Gramatik as Big Gramatik, Lane 8, Duke Dumont, Levity and Of the Trees. Metamorphosis aims to blur the line between artist and audience, with immersive installations, collaborative art spaces and yoga all included amongst the live music. The festival is organized by the folks behind last year’s troubled Sol Fest, which faced logistical issues, heavy police presence and even a car fire, but here’s hoping for better with this new beginning. Gruesome

As Tom Petty is to Gainesville, so Chuck Schuldiner is to Orlando — feel free to quote us

repeatedly as to that point — and few bands pay proper tribute to the much-missed frontman and maniacal shredder of seminal metal act Death than Gruesome. The Floridian OG death metal revivalists are touring behind newest album Silent Echoes, a ferocious homage to Death’s note-perfect 1991 prog-DM masterpiece Human — up to and including the band’s logo and very familiar cover artwork. It’s even dedicated to the memory of Schuldiner and Death/Cynic drummer Sean Reinert. And they deffo accomplished those gory and lofty goals. Gruesome plays Conduit this week as part of an East Coast run and you owe yourself some irreversible neck damage-as-civic pride. 7 p.m., Conduit, 6700 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, conduitfl.com, $20. — MM

Experience Contemporary Myth and Storytelling

Casselberry Arts Center this week opens a new group exhibition, Experience Contemporary Myth and Storytelling, with a heavy lineup of local artists — Boy Kong, Emily Martinez, Libbi Ponce and Tom Rosenow — working in sculpture, paint and prints, all taking on the age-old art of myth-making and storytelling. The artists will be exhibiting new work that often takes on familiar archetypes and objects, while simultaneously creating new and personal narratives. Sure to be eye-opening. 6 p.m., Casselberry Arts Center, 137 Quail Pond Circle, Casselberry, casselberry.org/917/casselberry-arts-center, free. — MM

Sharks in the Water: The Big Za Bash

Florida rapper BossMan Dlow is celebrating his birthday at the Addition Financial Arena in high style this weekend. The Port Salerno native started rapping while incarcerated in

2019 and has quickly risen to chart success and industry recognition, recently taking home the Best New Hip-Hop Artist honor at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards. He’s bringing the party to Orlando with special guests and expert revelers Glorilla, Sexyy Red, Rob 49, 42 Dugg, Loe Shimmy, Dej Loaf, Nardo Wick, Fredo Bang, Zillionaire Doe and Chicken P. With national names and rising stars, it’s shaping up as one hell of a way for Dlow to mark another solar return. 8 p.m., Addition Financial Arena, 12777 Gemini Blvd. N., additionfiarena.com, $71.10$135.35. — EB

CatVideoFest

The winning combination of adorable cats and blooper supercuts makes its way to the Enzian’s screen for this year’s CatVideoFest. Touted as “The world’s No. 1 cat video festival,” this only-in-theaters event offers viewers and cat enthusiasts the chance to experience a feature-length highlight reel of cat foibles, follies and other feline feats of derring-do (successfully executed and not), filmed by their doting owners. And in the spirit of true cat-loving, a portion of all ticket proceeds goes toward local no-kill pet charity organization Pet Rescue by Judy. 11 a.m. & 1:30 p.m., Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland, enzian.org, SOLD OUT. — Azlyn Cato

Diesel (A477218) is 5 years old, and a bit on the small side. He is shy, sweet and very affectionate. When he first arrived, he was none of those things. Diesel was part of an abuse call involving law enforcement and DCF. There were allegations of animal cruelty and domestic abuse. In the end, the owner decided to surrender Diesel to us.

When he first arrived, he was highly reactive and aggressive inside the kennel. He was avoidant of staff and extremely difficult to handle. We don’t know what traumas he may have endured, but it was obvious he was scared and not ready to trust anyone. Diesel has been here for almost two months, and the change in him is nothing but amazing. He shares his space with other dogs, is friendly, and genuinely seems happier. Diesel is still a bit shy around strangers, but warms up quickly once he determines there is no threat. Some treats, a few soft words and a pet or two on his head and Diesel is your new best friend. Let’s get him home.

Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-8363111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
