If you’re down for a good chuckle, the D etroit Women of Comedy Festival is happening this weekend at P lanet Ant Theatre and The Independent Comedy Club in H amtramck. The mission of the D etroit Women of Comedy Festival is to use comedy to amplify the voices of marginaliz ed voices. The festival will feature a variety of acts across the spectrum of comedic stylings including improv, sketch, and stand-up. There will also b e a live podcast recording of the D ead Waves podcast on Saturday. D ominiq ue Morisseau’s play D etroit ’67 will make you laugh out loud one moment and cry the nex t, followed b y the urge to sing along to its b rilliant Motown soundtrack. The play takes place at an after-hours party spot in the b asement of Chelle and L ank P oindex ter’s childhood home. Things start to head south after L ank rescues a white woman they find on the side of the road who’s ob viously j ust had the crap b eat out of her. Meanwhile, tensions have erupted b etween B lack residents and racist police who want to prevent D etroit from b ecoming a “negro city,” and the D etroit Reb ellion of 19 67 b egins. B ut the reb ellion itself isn’t the point of the play. The point is

how the families of victims of police b rutality are left to pick up the pieces following their loss. It’s how the media and authorities choose the narrative, painting victims as thugs and aggressors rather than entrepreneurs, dreamers, mothers, or b rothers.
