Seema Malhotra Planet Nine adds Gulfstream MP visits new G650 to its fleet Heathrow hotel

On Friday 21st June, MP Seema Malhotra visited the site of the striking new 1930s-inspired Ibis Styles London Heathrow East hotel in Hounslow. Welcomed by Chairman Shiraz Boghani, Vice Chairman Nadeem Boghani of Splendid Hospitality Group and Chief Executive, Stuart Bailey, Ms Malhotra, member of Parliament for Feltham and Heston, supported the project from its early days, and enjoyed a hard hat tour of the development site. The 125-bedroom property, located on the site of the former The Master Robert Hotel, is set to open in September 2019. Situated on the Great West Road, Hounslow,

the development is in close proximity to Heathrow’s main terminal and will serve both the business traveller and community markets, and is unusual in combining both hotel and private dwelling accommodation. Taking its influence from nearby early-tomid-20th century buildings including the Hoover building, Firestone headquarters and Gillette factory, the design-led development will also include a meeting room, dining and car parking. The interior design will feature the clean lines, neutral curves and geometric patterns of the Art Deco era. The Splendid Hospitality Group is one of

the UK’s fastest growing privately owned hotel groups. Ibis Styles London Heathrow East will be Splendid’s latest franchise with AccorHotels, alongside the Mercure Hotel Leeds Centre, Mercure Bristol Brigstow and Ibis York Centre. Speaking about the hotel development, Splendid Vice Chairman Nadeem Boghani commented: “The Splendid Hospitality board were delighted to welcome Ms Malhotra MP to Heston and we would like to formally thank her for her invaluable assistance in delivering our newest hotel.” Stuart Bailey, Chief

Executive of Splendid Hospitality added: “Ibis Styles London Heathrow East is the fourth of our franchise partnerships with AccorHotels. Putting a striking design scheme at the heart of our offer, we are looking forward to welcoming our first guests when the hotel opens later in the year.” Seema Malhotra said “I am pleased to visit Ibis Styles Heathrow East Hotel which will bring jobs, meeting spaces, hotel and private accommodation to a prime location in our community. I wish the new project every success, and my thanks to Splendid Hospitality for their work engaging and supporting the local community.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR An Offensive Some Tories UK not yet have no concept Presumption the 51st state! 260 Kingston Road, Staines, Middx TW18 1PG Email: info@heathrowvillager.co.uk

Please include your full street address and daytime telephone number.

Sir, A silly letter in the The Villager of 15 June by one Terry Lyden is so offensive that it must be condemned. Anybody who has the temerity to use a World War II tragedy to make digs against climate change protesters and the EU ought to be ashamed of himself. The writer revealed his mentality with the words ‘Celebrate D-Day’. Mr. Lyden should try to understand the difference between celebration and remembrance. - he might learn something. My father was part of the D-Day operation and the memory of his generation should not be besmirched with inappropriate fulminations. Whilst Terry Lyden was cycling to school in a Hertfordshire village, my relatives (two decorated for bravery) were being wounded in some of the most horrific campaigns of the War. How dare this non-serviceman presume that climate change protesters do not remember the war or respect our history. He should study men like Franklin Medhurst who died last year, aged 98. A decorated WW II serviceman from an industrial background, Mr. Medhurst subsequently became a fully qualified architect, campaigner and acclaimed environmentalist. His obituary was in the national press. Mr. Lyden should read it. Furthermore, environmentalists do not ‘attack’ ‘our’ streets. These are public spaces for everybody, and the protesters are brave, committed fighters with the legal right to voice their concerns - a right preserved by men like my father who served their country whilst Terry Lyden was still in short trousers. Son of an Ashford Serviceman

People in glass houses … Sir I have not live in the area for very long, and read your publication with some interest. However I must take one of your contributors, a Mr H Trace of Spelt Horne Labour Party to task. In a recent edition of your newspaper, he launched a tirade against Donald Trump. Although I have not a lot of time for Mr Trump, Mr Trace seems to forget his own leader Jeremy Corbyn called other terrorists and enemies of Britain his friends, ie, the IRA, Hesbalah and other terrorist groups. No doubt he has a few other skeletons in his cupboard. People in glass houses should not throw stones. Yours J Sullivan (Mrs) Feltham.

Middleton’s Moaning’s 126 Sir, I find it hard now to support any of the major political parties in recent times. The sheer incisiveness’ and procrastination riddled with doubt and indecision. There is after all, a rule by majority? Yes that is right, something called democracy. Apparently this is not understood by our present government or the opposition. I recently watched part of the 5 ambitious Tories (4 Oxford, 2 Etonian, one no mans land), lined up like monkeys on stools, each with a political agenda of compromise, doubt and alienation. It was like watching five ventriloquists dummies, all lost without their handlers, floundering for favour and opportunity and political gain. Public school bagatelle (with one exception) None of these characters impressed me, the decision has been made by the people of this country to leave Europe- this should be final. It may well be that by leaving Europe things get economically worse, but trade will continue throughout the world whatever political arguments are put forward. This island has traded for hundreds of years and will not stop when we leave, whatever Europe rules inflict. Deal or No Deal, nearly as interesting as that stupid game with Noel Edmunds. Me I am for the wishes of the people right or wrong, mistakes have been made throughout our history, you only have to count the wars to see that humans never learn, and will eventually destroy this planet in pursuit of avarice and self-gain. So it’s back to the flower arranging now, and check on my knitting. George Middleton

Sir However could Surrey County Council consider cutting £21 million from the SEND (Special Education Needs and Disabilities) budget. Some Conservatives in government seem to have no concept of the difficulties which people are experiencing when looking after disabled children. Assessments, therapy and support are all under review. I believe that it is high time Surrey councillors and its 11 Conservative members of parliament stood up to the plate and defended the care and rights of vulnerable youngsters. I write not only as a former Labour councillor but also as an experienced secondary school teacher who supports the safeguarding of children. Yours Mark Hayhurst Ewanrigg Road, Maryport.

ASHFORD DUE A ROYAL VISIT? Sir, Our friend Andrew McLuskey is surely right that Ashford is due a senior Royal visit, but if, as he suggests, it should mark the Church Road development, then it should be Prince Charles who comes, so that he can see the horror of what happens when planners permit (in his phrase years ago) “a monstrous carbuncle”. Wanton neglect, and inevitable demolition, of a landmark building at he heart of the town; annexation of a vital green lung; and a total choking of vital services such as parking, healthcare, schools and streetscene as to damage Ashford’s precious quality irreparably. Yours faithfully, Chris Frazer Sunbury

Tory subterfuge to sabotage BBC Sir The BBC is the world’s most trusted presenter of news. It is on Trump’s list for ‘commercialisation’, thus on Boris Johnson s, as a Brexit consequences. Trump backs Boris. It has been the policy of successive Labour and Tory governments to ease the lives of old age pensioners by providing tax revenue to ensure freedom to view at no cost. But Osborne, the previous Tory chancellor, withdrew the tradition by dumping it on the BBC hated by Tories (an insupportable burden on the BBC) and a social calamity. Not only that. The Tories have the brazen neck to blame the BBC for a slap in the face of war veterans. Their policy? Sabotage by subterfuge. Death to fair comment in news, plays, music, discussions and sport, whenever BBC and commercial TV compete for the same audience, the BBC wins by a mile, eg, cup final viewers: BBC 92%, commercial TV 8%. As a sample of what would follow a Trumppleasing Brexit, watch BBC’s ‘Breakfast’ at 6am versus commercial ‘Good Morning Britain’ with Piers Morgan. The latter is show biz, built around adverts, pseudo competitions an d give-away dross. Morgan shouts down any ‘guest’. The BBC never insults its viewers, scrupulously putting all sides of a case. It starts each day honestly. Morgan s interviews with Trump make one feel embarrassed, a voyeur accidentally encountering a couple in the throes of passion. Long live the BBC, beacon for freedom in war’s darkest days, emblem for goodness in time of peace — a light in our darkness. Yours G Gray Feltham Hill Road, Ashford.

Sir ‘Vote Johnson for prime minister’ Donald Trump instructs us, not for the first time. ‘Sack London’s mayor’. Let us remind ourselves that since the 17th century we elect a parliament to represent and rule us, and that the Union Jack, not the Stars and Stripes flies over Buckingham Palace. Mr Trump is also the loudest ‘Over the no deal cliff’. What is he up to? He sees us, post-Brexit as the 51st state of the USA — easy pickings. Why does the wolf pack encircle the herd of deer, spreading panic? It is to have one animal desert the protection of numbers, and thus be easy prey. Trump will then seize the UK’s most marvellous creations — the NHS and the BBC, admired and used as world models. Yours Harold Trace Spelthorne Labour Party.

VERY ENCOURAGED Sir I also was very encouraged to read Mr Trace’s letter ‘Now for Constructive Opposition’ in the 1st June Issue of the Heathrow Villager. This is certainly why I stood for Councillor and am keen to be able to work towards them now. 1. Climate crisis is a massive concern and enters our Borough discussions in many key ways. I am keen we explore ways to lower our plastic usage and recycle more plastics specifically. Whilst the Leader of the Council might like to think the Council is for Heathrow Expansion, I can assure residents that the Liberal Democrats are NOT. We are not against economic prosperity by any means and Staines Town Centre is a key area in which I would like to focus Councils economic growth in. However, Heathrow Expansion would cause years of misery for residents and cause intolerable environmental damage to our air quality locally. Just one issue is the 25,000 Heathrow Airport car park being planned in Stanwell. 2. I have taken a position on the Overview and Scrutiny Committee to ensure the Council is held to account. As a Group we will be keeping a close eye on the property investment strategy of the Council and exploring if the Cabinet system (currently dominated by the majority party exclusively) is currently working for residents as the best way for their representation to be heard. 3. I believe we are better in the EU. We do respect democracy and our main concern now is getting the best deal we can and putting that decision to the public. That is true democracy than it being decided by the shambolic Conservative Party few. It is worth mentioning that while we remain members of the EU Heathrow Airport will have to meet the strict EU environmental controls. If we leave, the government can do as it likes. 4. I agree and see housing as a social responsibility of the Borough to provide for ALL residents, those needing assistance from Hostel living, to support through rented or shared ownership and those who very fortunately own their own homes and wish to preserve and grow their enjoyment of the Borough. I have taken the position of Shadow Member for the Community and Well-being Portfolio in the Cabinet to further this aim. 5. Not only our health, but our education and leisure activities such as our life guards at the Leisure Centre is provided to us by our key workers, ensuring they are valued and attracted and motivated to stay in the Borough goes without saying. If residents would like to come and talk to us Cllr Bateson and I would like to also take this opportunity to remind Residents of our Monthly Surgeries in Staines Library on the first Saturday of the month, the next being Saturday 6th July from 10.30-1pm. Best regards Cllr Nichola Cornes Staines South Ward, Liberal Democrat Group

Heathrow unveils its preferred masterplan for expansion

Details of tough new measures to reduce emissions revealed, as well as our preferred plans for noise respite and proposed ban on scheduled night flights This statutory consultation is the next major milestone for the expansion proposals, and Heathrow’s most innovative and largest consultation to date It follows Heathrow’s Airspace and Future Operations Consultation held earlier this year and will inform the airport’s Development Consent Order (DCO) application, which is expected to be submitted next year. Today, Heathrow launches its 12-week statutory consultation on expansion, the latest milestone in delivering this critical national infrastructure project, as the preferred masterplan for the project is unveiled.

ISSUE 952 HEATHROW VILLAGER 29th June 2019 Page 3

The Airport Expansion Consultation also reveals plans for the airport’s growth in phases – from runway opening in approximately 2026, to the end masterplan in approximately 2050. This incremental growth will mirror the forecasted growth in passengers and help airport charges remain close to 2016 levels, delivering more affordable fares for passengers. In addition, the consultation is seeking feedback on: Plans to operate the future airport: how the future three runway airport will be operated, including important elements such as night flights, as well as how potential additional flights before the new runway opens could be operated on our existing two runways; Assessment of impacts of the airport’s growth: Heathrow’s preliminary assessment of the likely impacts of expansion on the environment and local communities; Plans to manage the impacts of expansion: Heathrow will set out the airport’s plans for mitigating the effects of expansion, including property compensation, Noise Insulation Policy, a Community Fund, and plans to mitigate against environ-

mental effects including new measures to reduce congestion and emissions and a ban on scheduled flights at night. The plans revealed in this consultation incorporate the extensive feedback gathered from the airport’s first public consultation on expansion, which took place from January to March 2018, and the Airspace and Future Operations Consultation held from January to March 2019, as well as from continuous engagement with local communities, local authorities, airlines, environmental stakeholders and other interested parties. Responses to this consultation will inform Heathrow’s application for a Development Consent Order (DCO) – the planning consent required for the project – which is expected to be submitted to the Secretary of State for Transport next year. The consultation will be Heathrow’s largest and most innovative public consultation to date, with 43 consultation events to be held during the 12week period. As part of this consultation, a website will also be available with all the information about Heathrow’s proposals, videos to help explain

the plans, and an online feedback form to assist as many people as possible to participate and have their say. Hard copy consultation documents will be available to view in 42 different locations across local communities. Heathrow has also invested in new technology to bring the plans to life, including a physical model of the future airport which features augmented reality, sound booths to demonstrate the effect of noise insulation on properties overflown by aircraft, and a CGI fly through video. Emma Gilthorpe, Heathrow’s Executive Director for Expansion, urges local people to participate in the consultation, saying: “Expansion must not come at any cost. That is why we have been working with partners at the airport, in local communities and in Government to ensure our plans show how we can grow sustainably and responsibly – with environmental considerations at the heart of expansion. This consultation is an opportunity for people to have their say on our preferred masterplan, so it’s really important that as many people as possible take part. We look forward to hearing your views.”

Neale (the School head) in attendance; Mr. Neale was very pleased that his school achieved so well this year. The School was also invited to take part in

our Technology Competition, taking place later this year where we also hope other local schools will take up the opportunity. Contact us to find out

more on these events and others we run throughout the year. Peter Grainger President of :- The Rotary Club of Ashford Middlesex.

Council prosecutes after rat droppings found at Hayes take-away The owner of Chixy’s takeaway in Botwell Lane Hayes has been ordered to undertake 120 hours of unpaid work after admitting several breaches of food hygiene regulations. On Tuesday 4 June 2019, Isleworth Crown Court heard how Mohammad Usman Riaz, the owner and operator of Chixy’s, had a history of poor compliance with food hygiene regulations. Officers from Hillingdon Council originally visited the takeaway in November 2017 following a customer’s allegations of food poisoning. They found a hole in a wall allowing rats into the kitchen, with rat droppings inside the kitchen and throughout food preparation areas. Riaz closed the takeaway temporarily in November 2017 to address the problems. Council officers then made an unannounced visit in May 2018. They found no improvements to Riaz’s approach to food safety and hygiene. The court heard that staff at Chixy’s had not received food hygiene training and were seen handling waste material

before directly handling and serving cooked food, without washing their hands. Cooked chicken was stored at room temperature, and raw burgers and cooked food were stored together in the same fridge. Food had also been placed on the floor in the outside yard where waste was being stored. The staff toilet opened directly onto the room where food was being handled, and effluent was seen leaking from the toilet waste pipe on the walkway between the preparation room and the cold room. The judge felt that the case was so serious that a fine was not appropriate, and did not accept that it was simply a case of poor management as advanced by Riaz’s defence. Given the number of breaches the judge imposed a 12 month Community Order with 120 hours unpaid work for each of the seven offences to run concurrently. Riaz has also been ordered to pay a victim surcharge and £3,000 towards the council’s costs. Councillor Douglas Mills, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Commu-

nity, Commerce and Regeneratio,n said: “Given the appalling disregard for public health shown by Riaz and his refusal to accept responsibility, we were left with no alternative but to take legal action. “Rather than accept the help and support offered by our officers, Riaz instead claimed allegations against his business were exaggerated. The sentence handed down shows the

judge did not agree with him. I hope this sends a clear message to other businesses that we simply will not tolerate those that put our residents’ health at risk.” Hillingdon Council regularly makes unannounced inspections of businesses to assess food hygiene standards. Food hygiene ratings for businesses can be found on The Food Standards Agency website: ratings.food.gov.uk

WHAT’S GOING ON? What on earth is happening at Stanwell Woods? Quite recently Surrey County Council authorised gravel company CEMEX to continue working there provided that they develop ‘amended restoration proposals’. These turned out to be very exciting plans for a Local Nature Reserve. Now however we

gather that Heathrow intend to build a ‘mega’ car park on the self same piece of land. Answers are required to the following questions:* Are CEMEX and Surrey happy for this turnaround? * Do Heathrow realise just how long and how much local people have been hoping that the land in question be made

available for use by the community? Increasingly we hear about the benefits of green spaces - how they have been proved to improve mental health and wellbeing generally. Rather more I think than massive car parks. We certainly need to know what’s going on. Yours truly, Andrew McLuskey

SOME concerned locals met Spelthorne Borough Council planning officials and councillors on Wednesday last (June 26) after finding out that land where the White House Lodge stood at the junction of Kingston Road and Laleham Road is the subject of a planning application allowing for a four storey development for a hostel. Many locals were not informed of the planning application, but were told at the

meeting that there is a Statutory Notice at the site which can be read, that details are avail-

able at the council offices as well as at Staines Library and online.

When asked how someone could find out about this application if they did not have a

computer, the answer was that ‘free computers are available at the library.’

In light of the increased representations of Liberal Democrats on Spelthorne Borough Council, the Lib Dem Group of councillors have decided to shadow portfolios as part of their ongoing commitment to scrutinise council proceedings. Sandra Dunn has been duly selected to lead the team as the Group Leader of Liberal Democrat Councillors and has announced that as well as the 6 portfolios, she has requested a dedicated Communications & Social Media responsibility. The responsibilities have been allocated as follows: Community Wellbeing and Housing Nicola Cornes Environment and Compliance Kathy Grant Corporate Management Richard Dunn Economic Development, Customer Service, Estate & Transport, Chris Bateson Planning Bernie Spoor Finance Lawrence Nichols Communications and Social Media, Tom Fidler Elected councillors 2019 Commenting Opposition group leader Sandra Dunn said: “It is very important that we send the message to the Conservative administration that we will not be allowing them free reign of the Council and we hope that this allocation delivers the message that

we mean business and will act as an effective team. It is fantastic that on the back of these all-time high results, I am joined by a team of fantastic, hardworking and diligent councillors who I believe bring a diverse range of skills to the opposition group. I have also added a new role for Communications and Social Media to ensure that residents are kept informed of decisions and that residents recognise we are acting on our commitment to dialogue which has been lacking from the ruling group. We will continue our Focuses and our network has expanded significantly with an influx of new members. These roles allow us to commit our time and resources effectively to proposals for the Council’s consideration, but also importantly to encourage residents to get in touch and know that there is a strong opposition team working hard behind the scenes in the residents’ interests. We will work with our fellow opposition councillors from other parties where applicable, but also hope that our professionalism and knowledge is available to the Conservative administration when they are on message with what we believe as Liberal Democrats. We believe in a fair, tolerant society that delivers high-quality services to our residents, that is responsive to the demands of residents, but that is environmentally conscious and well costed.”

Pavement parking is also a problem in Cumbria!

POETRY CORNER BY S.A. GRANT We are excited to My Lovely Jam-jar Mean announce our new regular How I love my motor car Machine column which we It’s a shiny deep red Jaguar It really is superior With posh real leather interior The wheels go round With hardly a sound It’s got SIPS and PAS and ABS And music too, if a knob you press The seats are soft, (but not the tyres) As I glide smoothly through the shires From Lands End to John O’Groats I’m always sure to get my oats Driving in my motor car My lovely shiny Jaguar

Sir I was extremely concerned to read two letters in the Heathrow Villager about drivers parking in Spelthorne. We have a similar problem in West Cumbria and as the husband of a disabled wife who is in a wheel chair I understand the difficulties caused by inconsiderate motorists. Inappropriate parking also causes problems for parents pushing prams or buggies. I admire the letter from Ms Jackie Reynolds calling for various West London organisations to match west London boroughs in calling for a ban on pavement parking. I would like to hear Spelthorne’s MPs speaking out against such poor behaviour and for the relevant authorities to take enforcement action. Yours Mark Haayhurst Ewanrigg Road, Maryport. Cumbria.

PUBLIC NOTICE ESSO PETROLEUM COMPANY, LIMITED SECTION 56 PLANNING ACT 2008 (AS AMENDED) (“THE 2008 ACT”) REGULATION 9, THE INFRASTRUCTURE PLANNING (APPLICATIONS: PRESCRIBED FORMS AND PROCEDURE) REGULATIONS 2009 (AS AMENDED) (“THE 2009 REGULATIONS”) REGULATION 16 OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE PLANNING (ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT) REGULATIONS 2017 (“THE 2017 REGULATIONS”) NOTICE OF ACCEPTANCE OF AN APPLICATION FOR A DEVELOPMENT CONSENT ORDER FOR THE SOUTHAMPTON TO LONDON PIPELINE PROJECT REF: EN070005 Notice is hereby given that the Secretary of State for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy has accepted an application by Esso Petroleum Company, Limited (“Esso”) of Ermyn House, Ermyn Way, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT22 8UX (“the Applicant”) for a Development Consent Order (“DCO”) under the 2008 Act (“the Application”). The Application was submitted by Esso to the Secretary of State c/o the Planning Inspectorate (“the Inspectorate”) on Tuesday 14 May 2019 and was accepted on 11 June 2019. The reference number applied to the Application by the Inspectorate is EN070005. Esso proposes to replace 90km of its 105km underground aviation fuel pipeline that runs from Esso’s Fawley Refinery near Southampton, to its West London Terminal storage facility in Hounslow. The project commences at Boorley Green in Hampshire, before travelling northeast to Alton pumping station. The route passes to the northwest of Bishop’s Waltham and to the southeast of Four Marks in Hampshire. The project then continues northeast, skirting south of Fleet, through Farnborough, crossing into Surrey and skirting Frimley, before continuing through Chobham and crossing beneath the M3 and M25 motorways as well as the River Thames. The project then continues through Ashford in Surrey and terminates at the West London Terminal storage facility in Hounslow. This notice outlines the main details of the Application and where a copy of the application documents can be viewed. Proposed Works The proposed DCO will, amongst other things, authorise: • the construction of a new pipeline, approximately 30cm in internal diameter and

approximately 97km in length, between Boorley Green in Hampshire and the West London Terminal storage facility in Hounslow; • the construction of all above ground infrastructure, including a pigging station, valve pits, pipeline marking and cathodic protection cabinets; • the creation of temporary compounds for construction works and storage purposes; • the creation of a temporary construction area extending throughout the length of the pipeline route; • the creation of permanent and temporary accesses from the public highway; • the temporary stopping up or diversion of certain streets, public rights of way and public footpaths crossing the pipeline route; and • other associated development and construction activities. The proposed DCO will also seek to authorise the permanent acquisition of land and rights in land, and the temporary possession of land required for the construction and maintenance of the project. The proposed project is an Environmental Impact Assessment development (“EIA development”), as defined by the 2017 Regulations. An Environmental Statement therefore accompanied the application. The application form and its accompanying documents, plans and maps are available for inspection free of charge via USB sticks and a tablet at the places listed below, until 27 July 2019. All of the venues have access to computers and internet services. A hard copy of the documents will also be available at Farnborough Library until 27 July 2019. I’ve got this hungry washing machine It eats my pants and socks Swallows my smalls, when they’re nice and clean Gobbles them whole and mocks My efforts to retrieve When I got to unload the wash It looks so innocent, naive But I find my undies - gone! Whether they are plain or posh I never get to put them on Though this may b e hard to b’lieve But I’ve searched through every duvet Trouser leg and sleeve But I’ve yet to remove a Single flipping pair Of my scanties from in there So to my sock and panties I have to say farewell Can’t understand the reason.... But hang on - what’s that smell? It’s pants! They’re back in season!

hope you will enjoy as much as we do.

Noisy Continuous low flying aircraft over Penton Hook Lock

Monday 24th June 2019 It is 21 40 and We have just suffered another low noisy plane This Time an A 380 “Crop Sprayer” AND two minutes later another noisy Aircraft. I guess is the 21 4O A380 was below one thousand feet and still climbing slowly And again at 21 45 another noise. All Of course on the same 1960 flight path. It Is time you got your act together and moved the planes around more. 20 48 more noise. 20 50 yet another noise. Hell You cant have any left. 21 53 Guess what ??? It was less noisy during the war. But then we had barrage balloons and Now we could use drones for the same effect 21 55 pm yes another one Do you know there were 5 men in a five bed cancer ward at Guildford and they all had cancer and lived near Heathrow airport. Please state under the freedom of Information Act how many people suffer cancers or breathing Problems for working at or living near Heathrow. 1 in ten Children are Quoted. with breathing problems You have 5 out of 5 at Guildford hospital. Will you please advise the height of that A 380 and why is it not “REACHING FOR THE SKY” at 4000 ft which is the local limit. Could I take you back to the days of Cat 2 aircraft which had ti fly high and climb fast for safety. Weell if these big one gat a problem at such low height you have a real problems. Please state under the Freedom of Informational Act how many people arrive at Heathrow each week to transfer on to another flight first domestic flight and and second European. Flights Terry Lyden The Ryde Laleham

ALARMED Sir I was alarmed to learn that 700 municipal football pitches have been cut because of diminishing funding, meaning that they are unavailable for young people. In many parts of western Europe there are examples of local football clubs with a dozen or more teams from under 9s to lover 30s. All this with headlines of child obesity and strains on the NHS, the increase in the number of people with diabetes, lack of exercise combined with poor diet in some cases how can England hope to achieve further success at international level? I would argue that we should be opening sporting facilities instead of closing them. Yours Mark Hayhurst (Former borough and county councillor for Stanwell) Ewanrigg Road, Maryport.

SEVEN THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A NEW CAR B

ritish drivers h a v e been offered seven top tips for choosing a new car, including what to consider in terms of budget, usage and fuel efficiency. Driving experts at LeaseCar.uk have released advice in order to help drivers select vehicles that meet all of their needs and requirements. If you’re new to car buying or haven’t made a purchase in many years, it can be hard to know where to begin. The ‘right’ car depends on who you are, where you live, what

you do, and what you expect from a car. But for those who simply need a vehicle for daily duties, functionality should trump all else. Tim Alcock from LeaseCar.uk commented: “After a house, a car is probably the second largest purchase you will ever make, so picking the right one is crucial and t here are a few questions you need to ask yourself when choosing a new vehicle. “How many passengers do you need to carry? What type of driving do you do? Do you have a long commute, and is fuel economy important to you? “Will you be doing any towing? And how much garage or parking space do you have?

“There’s so many bells and whistles on modern cars, you should also consider what your must-have features are – reverse cameras and Bluetooth compatibility for example – and similarly, what safety features are important to you? Do you want blind-spot monitoring, or automatic emergency braking? “Taking the time to properly research before you commit to a new car will ensure that your vehicle suits you and your lifestyle.” 1. Budget First and foremost, you’ll need to set a budget for your vehicle. When it comes to leasing, the general rule is that your monthly newcar payment should not exceed 15 percent of your monthly take-

home pay. A used car will be less expensive, but the same rule should apply. If you’re looking to lease, aim for a monthly payment that’s less than 10 percent of your take-home pay. You’ll also want to factor in an additional 7 percent of your monthly income to cover fuel and insurance costs. 2. Usage What will you be using the car for? If you live in a city centre and use your car for shopping and commuting, you need to take into account the amount of parking space you’re likely to have access to; you may want something relatively small. Alternatively, if you live in the countryside, you need to think about how bad conditions typically

get in your area in winter and whether you’ll need a car that can handle snow and ice – a 4x4 for example. 3. Body style You’ll need to consider what you regularly carry and what styles of car you actually like. If you’re responsible for the school run, you’ll need space for the kids. If you’re a dog owner, you’ll need to think about how much space your furry friend needs and whether they’ll be able to jump up and into your boot. If you have elderly relatives or very small children, you might want to consider a car with extra height, making entry easier. 4. Speed/power You need to think about how fast/powerful you want or need

your car to be – but remember that as a general rule, the faster a car is, the less efficient it is. If you need to stick to a strict fuel budget, you might want to think about a slower car that’s more fuel efficient. If you enjoy fast acceleration, regularly spend time on the motorway, or simply enjoy bragging to your mates, you’ll probably want a faster car. But with great speed comes greater costs – at the pumps, on your insurance, and probably in maintenance too. 5. Fuel efficiency After deciding on the level of acceleration required, you’ll also need to consider what fuel type if most appropriate. For city dwellers, it’s best to avoid the

tures and specifications. 7. Test drive Once you’ve found a car that seems like a good fit for you, arrange a test drive. A car might seem to have all the features you want, but the true test takes place when you are in the driver’s seat. You should testdrive the car the way you would drive it during your everyday life, get in and out of the car several times and be sure to sit in the back seat – especially if you plan on carrying passengers. Check out the boot space and if you use children’s car seats, brings your along to test for fit and ease of installation. Remember to take pictures of the cars so you can reference them later.

extra cost of diesel and get the cheaper petrol option. You’ll save money on purchase price and, for short journeys, the difference in fuel cost will be minimal. Many believe diesel vehicles get the best economy and, to a certain extent, this is true. But in many cases, you have to cover vast mileages annually to make back the extra cost of the car and the fuel over a petrol version. 6. Consider other cars in the class If you already have a car in mind, you should still review other comparable vehicles in the same class to make sure you haven’t overlooked an even better choice. Team Spelthorne are celebrating after a successful weekend at the 23rd annual Specsavers Surrey Youth Games organised by Active Surrey. Young people from across the Borough represented Team Spelthorne in 24 teams at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford on 15 and 16 June, finishing top of the medals table as well as entering the most teams. Team Spelthorne won medals in the following

sports:Around 350 local children, aged 6 – 16, enjoyed up to seven weeks of free coaching across 12 different sports in the lead up to the event, with 180 children going on to represent Team Spelthorne at the Games. This year saw a change of ethos to the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games where there was a greater focus on getting new participants into sport, in particular those from less advantaged back-

grounds. For many of the participants, this was their first experience of a sporting event with some being introduced to the event through our Fit and Fed initiative and Carers event. Cllr Maureen Attewell, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “The Surrey Youth Games is one of the sporting highlights of the year for Spelthorne and I’m delighted to say that we came top of the medals table. The number of children

wanting to take part was very high again, with Spelthorne winning the prize for entering more teams than any other borough. Thank you to the all the clubs, coaches, and volunteers for their fantastic support and also our sponsors, Everyone Active and Shepperton Studios, who enabled the children to receive free coaching. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Games and we hope to see many of you again next year.”
