‘Heart that cherishes and respects every life’
It is the value and faith that have always been preciously kept by ESWS. 50th anniversary is celebrated this year ever since 1972 when ESWS started out its welfare service to help disadvantaged and marginalized neighbors including patients of Hansen’s disease and children at orphanages. We would especially like to express our sincere gratitude to our sponsors, volunteers, and all the Eastern families for having been together with us. In the most humble way, with the same heart we had 50 years ago, we will keep practicing giving hands for the most neglected neighbors in need at the lowest place.
As much as the year 2021 was the year when all of us got tired while marginalized neighbors had to suffer even more, it was possible for ESWS to support more people in need of our help thanks to numerous Eastern families despite all the difficulties.
Even when social distancing made it difficult for us to help people on site, we made efforts to make sure there are no welfare blind spots managing cases in a contactless way and applying one on one involvement if necessary. Contactless activities such as online photo exhibition for adoptive families, an online bazaar, ‘Apple Box’, and a non-face-to-face fundraising walking event as well as monitorings both in person and online for children awaiting adoption, abused children, and single mothers were enhanced. Also, we have continued our emergency relief activities and medical and education support for senior citizens and overseas children in poverty.
This year, we are expanding our services not only for children whose official care and support are finalized so that their independent life as an adult can be supported enough for them to grow without facilities but also for those children in poverty in Asian countries such as Cambodia, one of our international cooperation countries.
We would like to express my deepest gratitude to all those who have been with me for the past 50 years, and again this year, Eastern Social Welfare Society will take the lead in sharing for the underprivileged in a more transparent and sincere manner as one of the longest-trusted welfare agencies.
Thank you.

ESWS has carried out child protection, education, and emergency relief projects so that children around the world can dream a better future with hope.
The death toll worldwide due to the long COVID-19 has exceeded over a million people. The Philippines and Sri Lanka have been coping with infectious diseases with strict lockdowns including closing schools and educational institutions prohibiting going out and moving to other areas.
However, they have been suffering greatly because of the emergence of the mutant virus and rapid spread of it in addition to the lack of capacity to handle COVID-19 and systems with poor health environments. Eastern Social Welfare Society conducted emergency relief and education projects for children in the Philippines and Sri Lanka who are having a difficult time.

ESWS has delivered the ‘Helping Hands’ of Eastern families to neighbors in need
In January 2021, the Eastern Social Welfare Society received 200 million won from the proceeds of projects including ‘Yoo San Seul’, ‘SSak Three’, and the Refund Expedition’ from MBC’s representative entertainment program ‘Hang Out With Yoo’ enabling ESWS to support not only children awaiting adoption, adoptive families but also single-parent families. In a difficult time due to COVID-19, we were able to make neighbors laugh through the hand of sharing delivered by 'Hang Out With Yoo.'
Foster Mother, Mrs. Soon-Ja Kim: It was really great to have an opportunity to learn first aid measures to deal with emergent situation without panicing while trying to safely taking care of babies at home. I think the first aid kit given to us will be very useful, too!
Ms. Jimin(pseudonym): Before the COVID-19 situation, I completed my vocational training sessions and obtained a certificate regarding the craft area. However, due to the prolonged COVID-19, I couldn’t realize my dream of teaching a craft class not having job opportunities and couldn’t help crying a lot with the mothers who were also preparing for the same thing as me. Fortunately, through this program at ESWS, I was supported to practice giving classes and developing a proper curriculum so that I could improve competence to become a professional instructor. I was also able to engage in giving classes in connection with the local community, which helped me a lot in having job opportunities. It definitely was a great opportunity for me to show what I am able to do in a safe way even when my chances of becoming a lecturer were inevitably reduced.
Suhyeon (pseudonym)'s Family: It was such a meaningful exhibition with the story of each adoptive family. To take part in this event, we looked at old photos of Suhyeon from when he was very little. Thanks to this, we had much fun and laughed a lot together thinking about how meaning we are to each other as a family once again. I also got a lot of great comments, too, regarding this exhibition such as ‘Congratulations, I could feel the warmth and love of families through the picture of your family in this exhibition.’

Ever since Eastern Social Welfare Society started to help people in poverty after the Korean War, it has been always there for our neighbors in need for 50 years at the lowest and most marginalized places. As expanding its welfare services from adoption to welfare projects for children, the disabled, and single mothers, Eastern Social Welfare Society has been playing a leading role as a social welfare agency offering professional welfare services.
Starting out with 6 branches nationwide, we are running specialized facilities for children such as temporary shelters, protection agencies, and I-Zone so as for us to protect underprivileged children in the society so that they can have the right to grow up healthy and safe. We are creating a bright future for underprivileged children such as children waiting for adoption, children in crisis in Korea, and abused children.
We support single-parent family by offering them case management, livelihood support, and vocational training in a systematic and professional way for them to be financially independent and adapted to society.
