100 Years of Giving
With the love and support of the Eastern family in our hearts, we will continue our commitment to giving in an honest and transparent way.
2022 was a year of celebrating our 50th foundation anniversary with a promise of commitment to the next 100 years together.
Eastern Social Welfare Society was founded in 1972 in accordance with the teachings of the Bible, which urged us to care for orphans and widows, during a time when people found it difficult to look out for one another in the aftermath of the Korean War. Over the past 50 years, following the spirit of foundation, we have grown to become a comprehensive and specialized social welfare institution, providing a wide range of services, including child welfare, single parent support, welfare services for the physically challenged, community welfare, elderly welfare, and even international development cooperation projects, particularly for the Filipino community.
The past year has been a period of actively implementing social welfare projects, as we restore the vitality of cherished daily lives after the hardships caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Notably, we have accomplished several significant projects, including the establishment of the Independent Youth Preparation Program, which provides support to young adults as they transition into adulthood, helping them navigate life independently after leaving the facilities they've been residing in. Furthermore, we've expanded our lifecycle welfare support services by stabilizing the operations of Senior Clubs and Day Care Centers, in response to the expected rapid aging of Korean society.
In 2022, as we celebrated our 50th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of our international development cooperation projects, we intensified our efforts to support underprivileged children in some of Asia's most impoverished nations. This included adding Cambodia to the list of countries we support, in addition to our ongoing projects in the Philippines and Sri Lanka. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit the Angeles Eastern Children’s Center in the Philippines, a
place that had been challenging to visit for some time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite challenging circumstances and the looming threat of infectious diseases over the past three years, Eastern Social Welfare Society has made every effort to safeguard children in impoverished regions, including Filipino children including the Kopinos. Regular emergency relief supplies and free meal support have been of significant assistance to these children. Moreover, the establishment of local community libraries and health clinics has facilitated substantially positive changes in their lives. During this visit, I found it particularly rewarding to participate in the donation ceremony for the music room and library that Eastern had set up within the Bahay-Pag-Asa Youth Protection Center at the request of the local authorities.
Above all, looking back on the past year, it was possible for us to care for those struggling neighbors through continuous growth and progress all thanks to the Eastern Family, including our supporters, volunteers, and staff.
We embrace new changes with a sense of responsibility coming from our 50-year history in 2023. While we continue to work together with our staff to ensure that this year, too, is dedicated to making your love and support more meaningful, Eastern Social Welfare Society will remain focused on our mission of creating a brighter future for marginalized neighbors. .

A Kopino, Changdo, Who Achieved His Dream of Becoming a Doctor
Born to a Korean father and a Filipino mother, Changdo was just four years old when his father left them without a word, so his mother had no choice but to go to another city to earn a living, leaving little Changdo and his younger sibling behind, taking on the responsibility of supporting the family. In the challenging circumstances where the free lunch provided by the Angeles Eastern Children’s Center in the Philippines was his only source of daily sustenance, Changdo never forgot his roots as a Korean, retaining his Korean name and a strong commitment to his education. To support him, ESWS provided continuous sponsorship and scholarship support, enabling him to continue his studies. With over a decade of support and his unwavering effort, he finally graduated from Angeles University with a medical degree. To become a doctor, he still has to complete the final step by finishing his Medical Doctor Program and a one-year internship to qualify as a specialist. Changdo, having nearly realized his dream, aspires to become a doctor and help the local community and Kopino children.
Mr. Changdo
I want to express my gratitude to the Eastern Social Welfare Society for instilling hope and courage in my younger self, who couldn't dare to dream. Your unwavering support and love have been a source of strength for me. I am committed to giving back by pursuing a career as a family physician and serving others. My aspiration is to become a compassionate doctor, extending warmth and care to children who face the same challenges I once did.
