VISION FROM CRADLE TO HEAVEN

MISSION

TO MAKE HEALTHY FAMILY FOR EVERY CHILD

HISTORY

In 1971, the Eastern Social Wlefare Society was founded by Dr. Kim Duk Whang for the children and neighbors who were suffering from poverty. For the last 40 years, we have directly and professionally helped them to live better life. We are proud of our service diversity such as single mothers, children and family in crisis, seniors and disabled people.

We are following Dr. Kim' s Legacy.

CHILD WELFARE SERVICES Since 1976

Three year old Ji-Won found in a babybox and cared by Jacob's home.

You will be happier tomorrow.

Ji-won doesn’t know who her mother is, nor where and how she was born because her biological mother gave her. She lives in Jacob's home. Since she was in Jacob's home, her caregiver Song-mi has devoted herself to take care of her. Now Ji-won calls her caregiver "mom". Last year, she went to amusement park and zoo and had fun time with her peers. She has become taller and mature just like any other children. We hope that the title "the child in the babybox with an umbilical cord," will not be the only thing that describes Ji-won's life.

At the heart of the Eastern Social Welfare Society, there are children who need real good parents. We are social workers for our children's happiness. We are satisfying children’s desire in the basis of protection and support to help their healthy growth and development. However, we know that “NOTHING IS LIKE HOME”.

Since 1976 SUPPORT FOR UNMARRIED MOTHERS

Meeyon, one of "EASTERN Happy Mom Club" members, who are raising children by themselves.

She is learning to be a mother.

When I decided to become an unmarried mother, I had no hope and there were not so many people supporting me. I knew this choice will change everything, but when I heard the heartbeat of my child, I had decided to be a mother. There have been many days when I have cried out because of prejudice of my neighbors. But since other unmarried mothers and I lived together in the EASTERN Community House for Single Mothers and Children, we have supported each other by encouraging each other. I can get strength out of it. I am trying to be a great mother by participating in "EASTERN Happy Mom Club" and being coached by parenting experts. I found a hidden talent in coffee making, so I am economically self-reliant by becoming a coffee barista.

EASTERN is running 6 community houses for 36 single mothers and children. Basically, we provide psychological counseling and give counselling services for unmarried mothers who need help raising their children by unprepared pregnancy and childbirth. Job training is a core part of "Happy Mom" club. Single mothers learn a wide knowledge of business such as accountant, food hygiene regulation, food processing, marketing, etc. We are helping mothers to live healthily with their children based on their economic independence.

years old Korean-phillipine child Lantz who got lymphoma surgery

Even if I can’t meet my dad, I’m not sad anymore.

Lantz, whose right arm was abnormally large, completely changed with help from Eastern Social Welfare Society and the Korean society. It is because he got his lymphoma surgery in Korea. He has dreamt of going to his mysterious father’s country, but never thought it would come true. But he visited Korea and received his surgery. He also visited an amusement park after he quickly recovered. Lantz’s family is re-gaining their smiles thanks to Eastern Social Welfare Society.

Focusing on half Korean children who are not getting enough care and education due to poverty or other limitations, we are supporting them by increasing their chances of offering quality education contents and environment in order to help them grow up as a healthy member of society. We are proceeding supportive business for innovation of growth and environment for poor Korean-Philippine and Philippine children. We are also working to support their families to stand independently. EASTERN will expand a new service branch for children in need in an asian country soon.

Mrs. Seo-kyung is having a great time with his adopted daughter, On-yoo.

COMMUNITY SERVICES Since 1992

EASTERN Seodaemun Community Center, Mrs. Shin-young

I can see a little bit of hope from EASTERN.

My husband's frequent outburst of violence and runaway from home have shaken my hopes of a happy marriage. Family finances were getting harder and harder and even raising a child is became a serious problem. Then, the landlady suggested the Seodaemun Community Center and I got some practical help such as counselling. I could get some strength to lead my life not only in housing expenses but also in economic activities and child rearing. I thank the Seodaemun Community Center helper who has shown me hope when I was about to give up due to the weight of life.

Eastern Social Welfare Society has received Seodaemun Community Center, a local welfare center from Seodaemungu and has been running for 24 years since 1992. We are taking one step ahead to the community with our vision of ‘Making Dreams with trust and being happy with loving together’.
