PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE | Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE | Robert Willever ’75

have been created to help our students excel. One great example is Eric Januszkiewicz’s story about his initial interest in biology that led to a passion for wildlife DNA that ultimately resulted in rattlesnake research thanks to the support of donors. Eric’s academic journey is just one of many success stories told on our campus. This year, 569 scholarships were awarded through the ESU Foundation. Based on donor generosity, the ESU Foundation has been able to award more than $742,200 in scholarships during the 20162017 academic year, an increase of $17,289 from the previous year. I can’t begin to tell you how grateful our students are for this support.

Friends, This is the time of year when we pause and give thanks for all the good in our lives. As President of East Stroudsburg University, the sentiment runs much deeper; I am so incredibly appreciative of the Warrior family that touches every corner of my life, every day. Whether you’re a student sharing your experiences, a faculty member explaining a research project, a staff member helping a student, an alumnus announcing successful professional growth, a parent participating in family weekend activities on our campus or a community member and neighbor making time to better know our students – you play a critical role in all we do. This report clearly demonstrates that our alumni, faculty, staff, parents and friends of ESU are committed to continuing ESU’s legacy of offering students a high quality education that is not only accessible but forward thinking. That’s a tall order given the financial needs of our students and the fiscal challenges of operating a public institution of higher education in these difficult times of decreasing high school graduates and increasing competition among colleges and universities to attract and retain them.

Others in this report have given back by coming to campus and sharing their professional experiences with our students, creating endowed lecture initiatives to bring industry experts to campus to share cuttingedge material that enhances the classroom lectures, and organizing fundraising initiatives to benefit our students as they tackle financial need. All gifts, great and small, have helped us to continuously improve YOUR ESU. Yet our work is far from done. The ESU Foundation, in cooperation with all of us at ESU, helps to identify the ongoing needs of our students and our institution and share those opportunities with all of you. As we move forward, our work on behalf of ESU must ultimately be collaborative, innovative and lead to the preparation and success of our graduates. My hope is that you will take time to read this report, recognize how far we’ve come with your support and then take a moment to consider your place in ESU’s future. Please join me in the next leg of the journey.

But we are true Warriors and we are certain to prevail! This is evidenced in the time and treasures shared here. First and foremost are the scholarships that

Reviewing the successes of 2016-2017, I am honored to see the outpouring of support for East Stroudsburg University and its students by our donors. Thanks to the more than $3.1 million raised by the ESU Foundation this year, we are able to help create a new generation of Warrior alumni that will make a profound mark on the world. The ESU Foundation 2016-2017 Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors recognizes and celebrates those who have shown their support through a gift to scholarship, academic or athletic programs, and the Warrior Fund. No matter the size of gift, your investment directly enriches the experience of all of our students, from the first generation freshmen to the non-traditional undergraduate or graduate student. Since becoming chair of the Board of Directors in 2014, I’ve been fortunate to see the incredible opportunities the Foundation offers students. At events such as the Annual Scholarship Dinner, when student scholarship recipients and their donors meet for the first time, I am quickly reminded how very important our work continues to be. Our students amaze me with their enthusiasm and academic drive while, at the same time, they understand the necessity to show their gratitude to someone they don’t know personally, but someone who helped make their college education possible. This year, I’m pleased to share that the ESU Foundation continued its momentum gained in connecting with and involving the ESU community and beyond through initiatives such as the baseball/softball field enhancement campaign. Also, as the Foundation team continues to solidify its strategies, we were also able to add key staff in alumni engagement, data management, annual giving and major gifts, giving the team the needed resources to engage our alumni and friends. Administratively, the Foundation board conducted a review and update of its by-laws and investment policy

statement. In addition, we successfully completed an RFP for financial services which resulted in a significant savings in management fees. We have also continued to fortify our board membership with individuals who bring talent and knowledge to the organization. Our effectiveness not only comes from their intelligence and experience but also from the best practices we continue to strive towards in all we do. Throughout this book you will read the many successes of the year and the impacts made for ESU’s students. While we can celebrate the past year, you can be assured the ESU Foundation is moving forward with its current priorities grounded in the university’s strategic plan that puts all Students First. Working with ESU President Marcia G. Welsh and her team, the Foundation looks to another exciting year of milestones and accomplishments in 2017-2018. I thank all those who played a part in the year’s work – our board members, Dr. Welsh and her council, the Foundation leadership and staff, and of course you, our donors. Your continued generosity gives evidence to the strength of the ESU community and all it represents. Thank you again for your support and we look forward to partnering with you in the coming year.

fundraising total in the ESU Foundation’s history, a benchmark we achieved not only because you see merit in our mission, but you understand the value of a quality college education.

In the day to day operations at the East Stroudsburg University Foundation, it’s pretty easy to get caught up in all the moving parts, momentarily losing sight of what makes our work so meaningful. Quite often, in my capacity as executive director, I am fortunate to meet with individuals who, in some way, have a connection to ESU. Alumni, or perhaps the spouse or family member of an alumnus who passed, members of the community or business leaders – these are just a few of the wonderful people I meet on a nearly daily basis. Their stories and reflections of ESU, and what makes it so special to them, are always poignant, emotional and, most certainly, memorable. As we began putting together our 2016-2017 Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors, I was reminded of many of my interactions with donors over the past fiscal year, as well as those relayed to me by staff. Behind every gift of support – behind every name listed in this Annual Report – there is a personal story that goes with it. This report seems such a small gesture in comparison to the generosity that it represents. It gives us the opportunity to recognize you and the many alumni, parents, businesses, organizations and friends who together made gifts and pledges of $3,162,641 in fiscal year 2016-2017, surpassing a $3 million goal. I’m proud to say that’s the third highest

Chris Yeager ’74 M’81, Secretary Retired Principal and School Superintendent

On the fundraising front, the baseball/softball turf field campaign, which was announced at the end of fiscal year 2016, made steady progress throughout the year with our fundraising total at $1.15 million. For the first time in our history we ran a Giving Tuesday campaign and surpassed our one day goal of $30,000. Other campaigns launched were a wrestling scholarship campaign, a football recurring gift campaign and a faculty/staff campaign. We had another strong year in raising money for scholarships; securing 27 new annual scholarships and 7 new endowed scholarships.

We continued to elevate our cultivation and stewardship events with highlights being the President’s Gala, the launching of the President’s Entrepreneurship Speakers Series and our annual scholarship luncheon being reformatted to a dinner, providing a more intimate interaction between donors and their students. We also increased our outreach to alumni through personal visits, 35 offcampus alumni events and the upstart of more alumni chapters locally and beyond.

Finally, I would like to extend my gratitude for the support and encouragement of the ESU Foundation Board of Directors, ESU President Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D., and the Council of Trustees. They are an integral part of our philanthropic mission and we value the partnership we share. Once again, you have my deepest appreciation for your support, and I thank you for your dedication to our students. Working together, ESU’s future is bright.

His goal is to become a biology professor so he can both teach and conduct research. Januszkiewicz maintained a 4.0 grade point average and participated in varsity wrestling until he was sidelined by injuries during his junior year. He served on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the National Society of Leadership and Success. He was a resident adviser in Minsi Hall and Hemlock Suites and twice was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Scholarships put ‘rattle’ in Januszkiewicz’s research By Bonnie Martin

The sound of a rattlesnake’s vibrating tail is music to Eric Januszkiewicz’s ears. But much to the recent East Stroudsburg University graduate’s disappointment, he saw just one of the creatures in its natural habitat during his post-graduation, cross-country trip that included extended excursions into Utah and Wyoming. The fall 2017 road trip fulfilled Januszkiewicz’s promise to himself made long before he graduated from ESU in May 2017 with three Bachelor of Science degrees – biology, biochemistry and chemical biotechnology. The promise: To spend a semester exploring canyons and rock formations, hiking and ice climbing before beginning a master’s degree program in biology in January 2018.

6

www.esufoundation.org

Januszkiewicz, a native of New Paltz, N.Y., initially chose ESU for its outstanding biology program and the opportunity to wrestle at the collegiate level. What he discovered was the generosity of donors who reward outstanding students with scholarships. One of more than 434 ESU scholarship recipients, Januszkiewicz received the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union (PSECU) Annual Scholarship, Robert J. Shields ’55 Endowed Scholarship, Third Floor Shawnee Hall Alumni Endowed Scholarship, Parents’ Scholarship and Dean Eugene H. Martin Endowed Scholarship, among others. The scholarships benefited Eric and the entire Januszkiewicz family. “The scholarships were a huge help financially,” he said. “With my older sister and brother in college at the same time as me, there was a huge financial burden on my family and on us. Getting these scholarships helped to lessen that burden and helped us all afford to go to school and further our educations.” Receiving the scholarship also gave Januszkiewicz a “mental confidence boost.” “It was nice seeing my hard work pay off,” he said. “Scholarships reward students and are an incentive to work hard.”

He spent many hours conducting biology research at the Northeast Wildlife DNA Laboratory. As a volunteer he genotyped dry blood from wolf and elk samples, collected DNA from black bears and tested ticks for infectious pathogens. A student in ESU’s Honors Program, Januszkiewicz was required to complete a thesis based on his independent study. He conducted two studies into the genetic analysis of rattlesnakes. He presented his research to Sigma XI, the scientific research honor society, and received an award for the most outstanding undergraduate presentation. His trip this fall enabled him to visit a university in Colorado where he hopes to pursue his doctoral degree. The university is home to 170 rattlesnakes in a venom analysis lab. “All you hear is rattling,” he said. For the near future, he will return to the Northeast Wildlife DNA Laboratory where he expects to concentrate on the wildlife genetics of bobcats. Januszkiewicz is grateful to donors for the scholarships he received from the ESU Foundation that eased the financial burden for his entire family. “I give a huge thank you (to donors) because it really does mean a lot. It’s great to see people who are willing and able to give back.” And to anyone who is thinking about endowing

Forty-five scholarships were awarded and four new scholarships were established during the 2016 – 2017 academic year through the ESU Foundation. In 2016-2017, $64,165 was made available to student athletes in football scholarships.

As part of the Giving Tuesday campaign festivities on November 29, 2016, the ESU Foundation hosted Thank a Donor Day for faculty, staff and local donors. Guests mingled with students and saw how their gifts directly impact the campus community. Students had the opportunity to participate by making a gift to the ESU Foundation Warrior Fund. Members of Warrior Elite, the ESU student ambassador program, collected gifts from more than 25 students.

The Educational Scholarship Golf Classic to benefit the Prince Hall Endowed Scholarship celebrated its 26th anniversary on August 1, 2016, welcoming nearly 60 golfers to Mount Airy Casino Resort. The golf outing benefits the Prince Hall Endowed Scholarship which enables students who attend the Prince Hall School in Philadelphia, Pa., the opportunity to further their education at ESU. Since the partnership with the Prince Hall School and ESU began in 1988, 17 Prince Hall scholars have graduated because of this scholarship.

To date, more than $120,000 has been raised towards the $200,000 goal. Led by former wrestlers Gary Kessel ’77 and Angelo Borzio ’95, the committee met many times to assess the program and form strategies to raise the funds over the next four years. The result will provide more scholarship dollars to prospective student-athletes and attract top-tier talent from the region.

The ESU Football Scholarship Committee, cochaired by Douglas Leonzi ’94 and Adam Stauffer ’00, M’02, was established in January 2017 to build on the excitement that surrounded Coach Denny Douds’ 50 Years a Warrior celebration in 2016. The committee, made up of 12 alumni spanning from the 1990s to 2000s, looks to raise scholarship support that would help coaches recruit the most academically and athletically talented athletes, regardless of their financial situation. To keep scholarship funds replenished and available, the committee is conducting outreach to football alumni seeking their support. They are requesting peer alumni to invest in the

Warrior Football Scholarship Fund through recurring monthly gifts, outright gifts, or the creation of annual and endowed scholarships. The committee has set a campaign goal of $25,000 annually. To date, $14,090 has been raised. Follow progress of the campaign at www.esufoundation.org/warriorfootball.

Baseball-Softball Field Upgrade Project To create optimal playing fields for ESU’s baseball and softball teams, a $1.8 million fundraising campaign is under way to upgrade the fields at ESSA & Hughes Field Complex at Creekview Park in Stroud Township. Through a partnership between ESU, the Stroudsburg Little League and Stroud Township, the fields will be upgraded to meet regulations for NCAA competitions. The enhancements will include the following on both the baseball and softball fields: installation of artificial turf, two sets of bullpen mounds for each field, construction of home and away dugouts, permanent and accessible bleacher seating for fans, designated hitting cages, and overhead netting to protect fans from foul balls. To date, $1.2 million has been raised for the project and the ESU Foundation looks to alumni and friends of the baseball and softball programs and community partners to complete funding of the project.

In April 2017, the East Stroudsburg University Foundation launched its Faculty and Staff Campaign to increase awareness about giving back among the campus community. With a focus on increased participation, co-chairs Bob Moses, director of Residence Life, and Dr. Leigh Smith, professor of English, and 16 committee members helped the Foundation increase giving among faculty and staff from 13 percent in January 2017 to 17 percent in June 2017. With the start of the new semester, the committee will continue working to secure new one-time and payroll deduction gifts from faculty and staff. Giving among this constituency group is important because alumni donors and granting organizations are more likely to give back if they see commitment from an internal audience. “Our faculty and staff know the campus and the students better than anyone,” said Rich Santoro, executive director of the ESU Foundation. “When they make a commitment to support through charitable giving, it speaks volumes for the value of an ESU education and ensures other funders that it is a worthy investment.” This campaign is also important because with a

majority of ESU’s students requiring some type of financial assistance, their success is often dependent on scholarship support. “In these tight financial times, effective recruitment and retention are vital for ESU to continue flourishing and are the concern of all university employees. To continue recruiting and retaining our fine, hardworking students, we must close the gap between their financial needs and the assistance available to them,” said Dr. Smith. During last year’s campaign, the committee connected with about 750 ESU employees through letters, group presentations and individual meetings to secure support. This year’s committee will take a similar approach, continuing to focus on increased participation. All donors have the opportunity to give to a variety of funds. “We encouraged people to find something that moved them,” said Moses. Almost every department has scholarships within it, but donors could also give to the student emergency fund, department or program funds, special projects, like the turf field renovations, or the Warrior Fund, to support the university’s greatest needs.

Giving Tuesday campaign surpasses goal raising $36K The East Stroudsburg University Foundation participated in its first Giving Tuesday on November 29, 2016. Thanks to more than 200 alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents and friends, the Foundation exceeded its $30,000 goal, raising $36,605 in one day. Throughout the day, the campus community and ESU’s network of alumni, parents and friends came together to support

various academic, athletic and extracurricular programs and scholarship funds. Through a lively social media campaign, donors shared their giving stories and encouraged classmates and friends to join them in supporting the ESU Foundation for Giving Tuesday. “It was encouraging to see the campus community unite for this campaign. We were inspired by the way faculty, staff and students all stepped up to invest in their university,” said ESU Foundation Executive Director Rich Santoro.

President Welsh, ESU Foundation honor President’s Circle donors and 1893 Legacy Society members at annual gala East Stroudsburg University’s most generous and loyal supporters were thanked for their support at the Annual President’s Gala held on September 16, 2016, at Great Bear Golf Club in East Stroudsburg. ESU President Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D., and the ESU Foundation hosted the event for donors who had given at the President’s Circle level of $1,500 or more over the last fiscal year or are members of the 1893 Legacy Society. The evening was highlighted by remarks from Kristina Arvelo, Class of 2016, and recipient of the Sanofi Pasteur Community Annual Scholarship. A senior majoring in biology with a concentration in prephysician assistant, Arvelo spoke for all scholarship recipients, expressing thanks for the financial burden taken off student’s shoulders as they pursue their college education. “It is a blessing being able to sit in class every day knowing that I can be here and not have to worry about money,” said Arvelo. “Because of your donations, you are not just impacting one student’s life, but multiple people’s lives. You are helping to make a person’s dream become a reality and by doing that, you are helping to create a future where we can all benefit.”

The four-year, $100,000 agreement marks the largest athletic sponsorship in the history of Warrior Athletics. The partnership began in spring 2017, with media rights extending to cable, radio, digital, print, and Ertle signage in Eiler-Martin Stadium and Koehler Fieldhouse. The partnership was agreed upon in June 2017 and extends through July 2021 and includes other Ertle-owned businesses, Mountain Creek Grill, co-owned by the Calicchio family and Baymont Inn and Suites located in Bartonsville, Pa. “We are extremely pleased and excited to be part of a partnership that will benefit hundreds of local student-athletes and make their dreams of competing at the PSAC and NCAA levels come true,” said Jim Ertle, owner of Ertle Subaru. Student-athletes and fans alike stand to benefit from this sponsorship, with support strengthening athletic programs and providing resources to compete for championships. The partnership was officially revealed at the 2017 home opener football game on September 16, 2017, vs. Mercyhurst at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

ALUMNI EVENTS AT A GLANCE 2016-2017

East Stroudsburg University Office of Alumni Engagement The Office of Alumni Engagement gained momentum in 2016-2017, connecting with its base of more than 40,000 Warriors living across the country. Through coordinated outreach and events that varied from on-campus gatherings to those off-site in Philadelphia, Valley Forge, Pa., Hoboken, N.J., the Lehigh Valley, Pa., Florida, New York City and Arlington, Va., hundreds of alumni connected with their alma mater.

All returning events had an increase in attendance. Two new chapters were added for a total of six chapters. Among them are the Delco/Chesco, Monroe County, Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and the Suncoast Chapters in Florida. In addition to these successes, the office added new staff member Jessica Schultz ’16 as the alumni engagement coordinator.

The Office of Alumni Engagement hosted over 30 events in addition to popular Homecoming Weekend. Activities in Florida, Washington, D.C., New York City, Philadelphia and surrounding counties helped build chapter membership. Overall, attendance was higher than previous years. The establishment of an Outreach Committee for the ESU Alumni Association Board of Directors encouraged alumni in these and other regions to get involved.

Ernie Gromlich ’60 and his daughter, Ellen Gromlich Stauffer ’90 (left) with her daughters, pose at the 2016 Annual Legacy Lunch and Pinning Ceremony with ESU President Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D. Ernie Gromlich is a member of the ESU Alumni Association Board of Directors.

By the end of 2016-2017, alumni chapters were active in Philadelphia, Delco/Chesco, Lehigh Valley, Monroe County, Washington, D.C., metro area, and Suncoast, Fla.

Highlights of the 2016-2017 year include: Alumni Association Board of Directors The Alumni Association Board of Directors successfully planned and coordinated the Alumni Awards and Reunion Banquet during Homecoming 2016, awarding eight alumni awards, two of which were new - the Technology Award and the Great Teacher Award. The Executive Committee restructured the standing committees of the board to include a Young Alumni sub-committee of the Outreach Committee, combined the Administration, Bylaws and Strategic Planning Committees into one committee, and assigned members to committees based on each member’s individual strength. They also facilitated the annual board member nomination/election process and appointed eight new members. The board established the Annual ESU Alumni Board Scholarship, attaining a 100 percent participation rate by December 31, 2016.

From left, Keith Fisher ’91, Tom Leshko ’57, Josh Looney, and Jeffrey Carr ’90 at the 2017 Annual D.C. Cherry Blossom Brunch.

Alumni gather in Hoboken, N.J., for a Young Alumni Happy Hour planned by Brandon Lawrence ’07 and Michael Quick ’10. Quick is a member of the ESU Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Social media/digital communications/alumni magazine The office collaborated with Web Services to accomplish an increased presence on Facebook and Twitter. There was also an increased number of e-newsletter and email blasts. E-newsletters were sent the second week of each month, providing information on alumni news, upcoming events and messages from campus. The year also included a fresh look to the alumni engagement website, www.esualumni.org , and a redesign for the bi-annual magazine, the Alumni Herald.

Homecoming Weekend 2016 The Office of Alumni Engagement moved the annual tailgate event to a new area, increasing capacity for tailgate spots and providing a themed experience in closer proximity to the game day festivities with approximately 1,200 attendees. The office also worked closely with volunteers from the Class of 1966 to establish a fundraising component for their class gift and execution of the Class Memory Book. Members of the Suncoast Chapter gather in Englewood, Fla., for the Annual Golf Outing and Luncheon planned by Dick ’57 and Joan Stanley Merring ’67.

Volunteers made up a core group of seven alumni from the Class of 1966. They added several events that were central to the Reunion Class and included a brunch at the President’s House, and a Tailgate Class Party.
